Welcome to 'The Liberty Insider.' 00:00:20.98\00:00:22.88 This is the program that brings you up-to-date 00:00:22.92\00:00:25.12 news, views, discussions, insight 00:00:25.15\00:00:27.76 and an analysis of Religious Liberty events 00:00:27.79\00:00:31.23 that you probably won't get anywhere else. 00:00:31.26\00:00:32.96 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine 00:00:32.99\00:00:36.60 and my guest on the program is Ambassador John Nay. 00:00:36.63\00:00:41.24 And that's really opens up a lot of discussion 00:00:41.27\00:00:43.84 just to talk about your background. 00:00:43.87\00:00:46.34 Your last position, your retired now. 00:00:46.37\00:00:48.94 But your last position was US Ambassador in Suriname, 00:00:48.98\00:00:53.68 almost like Shangri-La for most people. 00:00:53.72\00:00:55.72 They wouldn't even know where it is. 00:00:55.75\00:00:57.32 Where is Suriname? 00:00:57.35\00:00:58.69 It is on the north shoulder of South America. 00:00:58.72\00:01:02.22 And it was the former colony of Dutch Guiana. 00:01:02.26\00:01:06.16 Received its independence in 1975 00:01:06.19\00:01:08.96 and it was a wonderful job, 00:01:09.00\00:01:11.03 very enjoyable country, wonderful people. 00:01:11.07\00:01:13.50 Now there's like, what's the country next door? 00:01:13.54\00:01:15.94 Is that-- 00:01:15.97\00:01:17.31 Directly east of it is French Guiana. 00:01:17.34\00:01:21.98 Directly west of it is Guiana 00:01:22.01\00:01:24.58 which used to be British Guiana. 00:01:24.61\00:01:26.72 And then on the other side of Guiana is Venezuela. 00:01:26.75\00:01:29.28 And I brought that up for a reason 00:01:29.32\00:01:31.89 when you talk about religious issues 00:01:31.92\00:01:34.66 and one of the most aberrant cases. 00:01:34.69\00:01:37.16 Remember the Jonestown? Yes. 00:01:37.19\00:01:40.33 There it was probably not too many hundred miles 00:01:40.36\00:01:42.26 from where you were based there in Guiana. 00:01:42.30\00:01:44.40 Yeah, I never made it over there to Jonestown but. 00:01:44.43\00:01:48.44 Well, probably not good for-- 00:01:48.47\00:01:50.97 'Cause I thought this was quite some time 00:01:51.01\00:01:52.74 before you were there. 00:01:52.77\00:01:54.11 Yes. 00:01:54.14\00:01:55.48 But I remember U.S. congressman made the mistake of going 00:01:55.51\00:01:59.95 and shaking on them. 00:01:59.98\00:02:03.15 When I think about your experience 00:02:03.18\00:02:05.92 and you've told me a little bit privately, 00:02:05.95\00:02:07.92 you know, I can't help thinking about 00:02:07.96\00:02:09.29 some of the Biblical figures 00:02:09.32\00:02:11.33 that has distinguished themselves in government, 00:02:11.36\00:02:14.06 you know, Seventh-Day Adventist 00:02:14.10\00:02:16.00 from a prophetic view point. 00:02:16.03\00:02:18.13 I think can study a lot on Daniel. 00:02:18.17\00:02:20.44 But we sometimes don't really think 00:02:20.47\00:02:22.10 what his government service meant. 00:02:22.14\00:02:23.74 That was a position of trust. Yes. 00:02:23.77\00:02:26.91 Through the different administrations 00:02:26.94\00:02:28.28 so even though he didn't move around much 00:02:28.31\00:02:30.51 in essence he was the foreign service there, wasn't he? 00:02:30.55\00:02:33.45 Representing of morality and honesty 00:02:33.48\00:02:38.75 because of his position. 00:02:38.79\00:02:40.62 Did you find any tension between your faith 00:02:40.66\00:02:44.96 as a Seventh-Day Adventist Christian 00:02:44.99\00:02:46.33 and what you were called upon to do 00:02:46.36\00:02:48.93 in representing your country? 00:02:48.96\00:02:51.07 Not much really and there are people 00:02:51.10\00:02:54.20 from every background in the foreign service. 00:02:54.24\00:02:56.17 There are many other devout Christians. 00:02:56.20\00:02:59.74 There is a regular weekly prayer breakfast 00:02:59.77\00:03:02.74 by some of them in the State Department 00:03:02.78\00:03:06.21 and so no I would say that you walk the line 00:03:06.25\00:03:12.42 because of course you're working for the government 00:03:12.45\00:03:14.26 and you're not out there to be spreading 00:03:14.29\00:03:18.56 the gospel actively on behalf of the government. 00:03:18.59\00:03:21.63 But it was a great job, a great career. 00:03:21.66\00:03:25.57 I really enjoyed it. 00:03:25.60\00:03:26.94 Yeah, now maybe I think we can delve into a little 00:03:26.97\00:03:29.24 if not your career then 00:03:29.27\00:03:30.61 than what in the course of that career 00:03:30.64\00:03:32.11 what you saw in different parts of the world. 00:03:32.14\00:03:35.84 It does seem to me that no so much diplomatic service 00:03:35.88\00:03:41.15 but public government service 00:03:41.18\00:03:43.12 has certain risks like at the moment in the U.S. 00:03:43.15\00:03:46.15 There's a lot of furor and discussion about 00:03:46.19\00:03:48.66 those you want to be president 00:03:48.69\00:03:50.49 or in the sort of a pre-condition it'll get. 00:03:50.53\00:03:53.80 The disease will become more advanced yet. 00:03:53.83\00:03:57.10 And there's even a Seventh-Day Adventist 00:03:57.13\00:03:59.97 running for the top office and I feel badly for him 00:04:00.00\00:04:03.71 because I think hurly-burly of parties 00:04:03.74\00:04:06.71 and political campaigning there's always the risk 00:04:06.74\00:04:09.61 that someone will compromise their personal morality 00:04:09.64\00:04:12.88 and perhaps even compromise 00:04:12.91\00:04:16.52 or disgrace the faith that they identify with. 00:04:16.55\00:04:20.29 I see that is very dangerous. 00:04:20.32\00:04:21.66 But I do believe that career politicians 00:04:21.69\00:04:25.29 are in a different moral level. 00:04:25.33\00:04:28.26 You know, I think there are, 00:04:28.30\00:04:30.47 highly ethical career politicians 00:04:30.50\00:04:33.00 and the there are people who are non-politicians 00:04:33.03\00:04:37.07 who also are highly ethical and then of course 00:04:37.11\00:04:39.51 some on both side who are not. 00:04:39.54\00:04:42.28 So I probably wouldn't characterize 00:04:42.31\00:04:45.85 politician or not as inherently unethical or-- 00:04:45.88\00:04:50.39 No but it's more dangerous. 00:04:50.42\00:04:51.75 I think it's inherently more dangerous 00:04:51.79\00:04:53.12 than an appointee or some one that's in the, 00:04:53.15\00:04:58.63 with the bureaucracy itself rather than running 00:04:58.66\00:05:01.96 for the rough and tumble of the election process. 00:05:02.00\00:05:04.73 I think has become so rough. 00:05:04.77\00:05:07.10 And one of the terrific things is of course is fund raising. 00:05:07.14\00:05:09.94 And there is no question that 00:05:09.97\00:05:12.64 for those who are having to raise funds, 00:05:12.67\00:05:15.88 they are going to wind up having to give access 00:05:15.91\00:05:18.98 to those who have donated to their campaigns. 00:05:19.01\00:05:22.12 There was a wonderful statement that our viewers might know 00:05:22.15\00:05:25.95 who it was about but I want to mention 00:05:25.99\00:05:27.49 but national politicians raising funds 00:05:27.52\00:05:30.09 in front of wealthy people. 00:05:30.13\00:05:31.46 He says, you know, here he says, 00:05:31.49\00:05:32.83 "I'm happy to be here 00:05:32.86\00:05:34.36 in front of my natural constituency, 00:05:34.40\00:05:36.16 the haves and have mores." 00:05:36.20\00:05:37.53 Yes. 00:05:37.57\00:05:38.90 And you know, he was free to say that 00:05:38.93\00:05:40.87 but apart from anything else 00:05:40.90\00:05:42.67 on a Christian level of morality 00:05:42.70\00:05:44.41 I can't imagine a responsible Christian 00:05:44.44\00:05:46.88 normally saying that. 00:05:46.91\00:05:48.24 That's just sort of stepping outside 00:05:48.28\00:05:50.85 what I would be comfortable with. 00:05:50.88\00:05:52.45 I think you want to have an approach of being, 00:05:52.48\00:05:56.58 having a lot of concern for the have not 00:05:56.62\00:05:58.99 or the have less people, so-- 00:05:59.02\00:06:02.99 Now I mentioned Guiana that was next door 00:06:03.02\00:06:05.36 to where you were in Suriname 00:06:05.39\00:06:06.73 and that was a Religious Liberty situation. 00:06:06.76\00:06:10.03 Those people supposedly went willingly 00:06:10.07\00:06:12.50 but in the name of religion to either kill themselves 00:06:12.53\00:06:16.24 or allow themselves to be terminated 00:06:16.27\00:06:19.17 in the name of religion. 00:06:19.21\00:06:20.54 That's a pretty amazing thing. 00:06:20.58\00:06:22.14 How did you find though 00:06:22.18\00:06:23.95 'cause that was an imported situation, 00:06:23.98\00:06:26.41 how did you find the religious community 00:06:26.45\00:06:29.68 and the mix of religious sensibilities in Guiana? 00:06:29.72\00:06:33.89 Well, of course I was in Suriname next door. 00:06:33.92\00:06:35.76 Sorry, in Suriname. That was my mistake. 00:06:35.79\00:06:38.03 Suriname was actually very diverse society amazingly 00:06:38.06\00:06:43.06 so, both ethnically and religiously. 00:06:43.10\00:06:46.70 It has 15 to 20% of its population is Muslims 00:06:46.74\00:06:51.41 and that is percentage wise the highest level 00:06:51.44\00:06:54.01 of any country in the western hemisphere. 00:06:54.04\00:06:57.18 You have another 20 to 25% who were Hindu, 00:06:57.21\00:07:00.78 about 25% Catholic, 00:07:00.82\00:07:02.65 about 20 some percent Protestant 00:07:02.68\00:07:05.19 and then a number of other smaller faiths 00:07:05.22\00:07:08.69 including a very long standing Jewish community. 00:07:08.72\00:07:13.86 And remarkably they get along very well. 00:07:13.90\00:07:18.80 There is religious freedom 00:07:18.83\00:07:20.77 and ethnically the various groups, 00:07:20.80\00:07:25.17 they do often tend to vote for various parties, 00:07:25.21\00:07:29.74 political parties somewhat based on ethnicity. 00:07:29.78\00:07:33.55 But I was very impressed. 00:07:33.58\00:07:35.35 People actually get along very well. 00:07:35.38\00:07:36.99 Yeah, in advance of this program 00:07:37.02\00:07:39.35 I looked up Suriname even though I said Guiana. 00:07:39.39\00:07:42.79 I looked up and I saw that instantly that this was 00:07:42.82\00:07:45.89 very diverse population and it was almost like 00:07:45.93\00:07:49.06 everybody came from somewhere else 00:07:49.10\00:07:50.47 and brought their religion and their ethnicity with them. 00:07:50.50\00:07:52.90 Yes. 00:07:52.93\00:07:54.27 That must have been a sort of a test case, 00:07:54.30\00:07:57.81 you know, unusual situation to observe that. 00:07:57.84\00:07:59.61 Well, it was and that was one of the aspects 00:07:59.64\00:08:03.51 of Suriname that I as I was 00:08:03.55\00:08:05.95 asking to be considered for that position. 00:08:05.98\00:08:08.28 I had noted that there were 00:08:08.32\00:08:11.09 all of these different communities 00:08:11.12\00:08:12.85 and that I have served in Africa 00:08:12.89\00:08:14.36 and there was a very large Afro-Surinamese community. 00:08:14.39\00:08:18.33 I served in South East Asia 00:08:18.36\00:08:20.10 and there was a Javanese community. 00:08:20.13\00:08:23.00 I served in India and there's a large 00:08:23.03\00:08:25.10 Indo-Suriname community. 00:08:25.13\00:08:28.20 There's a growing Chinese community. 00:08:28.24\00:08:30.47 And so I had made a pitch that I would like to be 00:08:30.51\00:08:34.88 considered for the job based partly on that 00:08:34.91\00:08:36.88 and it worked. 00:08:36.91\00:08:38.48 Well, let me really cut to the chase. 00:08:38.51\00:08:39.91 What were the beaches like in Suriname? 00:08:39.95\00:08:42.18 Actually you know, actually Suriname doesn't have 00:08:42.22\00:08:45.92 much in the way of beaches. 00:08:45.95\00:08:47.52 But it's pretty close 00:08:47.56\00:08:49.09 to a tropical paradise, isn't it? 00:08:49.12\00:08:50.99 Um, you know, first off, 00:08:51.03\00:08:54.00 it is east of the Caribbean islands 00:08:54.03\00:08:58.63 and so along the shore it's mostly mangrove swamps 00:08:58.67\00:09:03.44 and the water out in the ocean there 00:09:03.47\00:09:07.58 is mostly brown due to the Amazon 00:09:07.61\00:09:10.35 having flown out into the Atlantic 00:09:10.38\00:09:12.85 and then the currents curling it back up. 00:09:12.88\00:09:14.32 Yeah, I wouldn't have thought 00:09:14.35\00:09:15.68 but it would have to go back to Guiana. 00:09:15.72\00:09:17.05 So you don't actually go to the beach too much. 00:09:17.09\00:09:19.89 Now we love going out there to watch dolphins, 00:09:19.92\00:09:23.22 to watch the birds. 00:09:23.26\00:09:26.56 It is completely tropical. 00:09:26.59\00:09:28.96 I spent a good deal of time in the Amazon rainforests 00:09:29.00\00:09:32.53 and tried to promote the idea of protecting 00:09:32.57\00:09:35.54 the environment, protecting the rainforests. 00:09:35.57\00:09:39.54 but no beaches actually no. 00:09:39.57\00:09:41.51 I would say that the total time I spent on a beach 00:09:41.54\00:09:44.81 was maybe 15 minutes once, you know. 00:09:44.85\00:09:49.18 Yeah, well, at least I tried. 00:09:49.22\00:09:50.55 I tried to characterize your posting as a big holiday 00:09:50.59\00:09:54.16 but no I'm sure that was a lot of responsible work. 00:09:54.19\00:09:56.83 You mentioned the environment and you know this discussion 00:09:56.86\00:10:00.83 can go in many different directions. 00:10:00.86\00:10:02.20 But at the moment environmental concerns 00:10:02.23\00:10:04.47 are just worrying everybody. 00:10:04.50\00:10:08.47 I noticed that 2015 was the warmest year 00:10:08.50\00:10:13.01 on record ever of course that in a way that doesn't prove 00:10:13.04\00:10:17.58 that it is because it's only I think in the best part 00:10:17.61\00:10:20.22 of the last 100 years that paid any real attention to it. 00:10:20.25\00:10:23.72 But certainly in our lifetimes it's never been so warm. 00:10:23.75\00:10:25.92 So some thing is happening. 00:10:25.95\00:10:28.22 You made a focus on that probably through dealing 00:10:28.26\00:10:32.89 with the degradation of rainforests and so on. 00:10:32.93\00:10:35.10 There were several things I was concerned about. 00:10:35.13\00:10:37.23 And again, Suriname, most of the population lives 00:10:37.27\00:10:41.70 along the Atlantic coast. 00:10:41.74\00:10:43.64 And once you go inland you can go 00:10:43.67\00:10:46.88 in the tropical rainforests for many miles 00:10:46.91\00:10:49.51 or if you fly over it it's just a beautiful green carpet 00:10:49.54\00:10:53.98 and so I had, I was really happy 00:10:54.02\00:10:57.15 to get the opportunity to go into the interior, 00:10:57.19\00:11:00.86 climb a mountain with the head of Conservation International 00:11:00.89\00:11:05.39 that there was no record of it 00:11:05.43\00:11:06.76 ever having been climbed before. 00:11:06.80\00:11:09.80 But the environment of Suriname 00:11:09.83\00:11:12.13 is being damaged partly by gold mining that is not, 00:11:12.17\00:11:19.17 it's not even large company gold mining. 00:11:19.21\00:11:21.44 It's the small scale miners that have float in 00:11:21.48\00:11:25.65 and are just going in and using some of them 00:11:25.68\00:11:29.65 19th century methods of hosing away hills and-- 00:11:29.68\00:11:35.12 I know this is a huge problem in Brazil. 00:11:35.16\00:11:37.39 And exactly and many of the miners are Brazilians 00:11:37.43\00:11:40.06 who have come over the border 00:11:40.10\00:11:41.83 using mercury to separate gold from the ore. 00:11:41.86\00:11:44.37 And that gets into the rivers. 00:11:44.40\00:11:46.74 What I'm fishing for is you had that concern 00:11:46.77\00:11:50.71 as a representative of a government 00:11:50.74\00:11:52.54 to another government. 00:11:52.57\00:11:54.54 It must be concerning the governments 00:11:54.58\00:11:56.21 but as a Christian and as a Seventh-Day Adventist, 00:11:56.24\00:11:58.88 it seems to me as integral to what our concern should be 00:11:58.91\00:12:01.78 because the First Angels message 00:12:01.82\00:12:04.12 is tied up for the concern for the environment 00:12:04.15\00:12:06.35 or the Creator of the environment. 00:12:06.39\00:12:08.66 And also Paul says, you know, 00:12:08.69\00:12:10.53 God's coming to destroy those who destroy the earth. 00:12:10.56\00:12:12.86 So it's integrally part of our psyche as Christians I think. 00:12:12.89\00:12:17.17 I tried my best to make it something 00:12:17.20\00:12:19.30 of a theme of my three years there 00:12:19.33\00:12:21.50 of protecting the environment 00:12:21.54\00:12:25.31 including we bicycled across the country. 00:12:25.34\00:12:30.21 Promoting the idea that being out 00:12:30.25\00:12:33.28 and bicycling was more environmentally 00:12:33.31\00:12:35.52 responsible than driving. 00:12:35.55\00:12:38.35 The, much higher mileage. 00:12:38.39\00:12:41.36 Yes, and so over the course of four rides 00:12:41.39\00:12:46.29 we bicycled all the way across plus into the interiors 00:12:46.33\00:12:49.50 as far as the roads go. 00:12:49.53\00:12:51.03 Drew attention with TV crews to the illegal mining 00:12:51.07\00:12:57.34 that was going on the national park 00:12:57.37\00:12:59.84 and it really, even the art on the walls of our house, 00:12:59.87\00:13:07.18 we have chosen environmental theme 00:13:07.22\00:13:09.68 trying to choose as many Michigan artists 00:13:09.72\00:13:13.09 or artists who had a connection 00:13:13.12\00:13:15.82 to Michigan and Christians as possible. 00:13:15.86\00:13:21.73 It's obvious as an ambassador 00:13:21.76\00:13:23.53 you can make a statement that work, right? 00:13:23.57\00:13:24.90 You can. 00:13:24.93\00:13:26.27 We better take a break now but please come back 00:13:26.30\00:13:28.37 after the break to continue this discussion 00:13:28.40\00:13:31.01 with Ambassador Nay 00:13:31.04\00:13:32.57 and we're talking about the environment. 00:13:32.61\00:13:34.14 Stay with us. 00:13:34.18\00:13:35.64
