Welcome back to "The Liberty Insider." 00:00:05.40\00:00:07.50 Before the break 00:00:07.54\00:00:09.30 I was grilling Dr. John Graz about his early life 00:00:09.34\00:00:13.24 and you know, from my side, thinking about this 00:00:13.27\00:00:17.48 and remembering my father, 00:00:17.51\00:00:19.31 I know he did many things in his life 00:00:19.35\00:00:22.42 started off in publishing ended in- 00:00:22.45\00:00:24.65 and you shifted ending up in Religious Liberty. 00:00:24.69\00:00:27.82 But I know my father was inspired 00:00:27.86\00:00:29.62 through it all by the text from Peter. 00:00:29.66\00:00:32.73 I think it's 2 Peter, 00:00:32.76\00:00:34.16 "Casting all your cares upon Him, 00:00:34.20\00:00:35.63 for he cares upon you, cares for you." 00:00:35.66\00:00:38.63 You know, what's inspired you? 00:00:38.67\00:00:40.90 You mentioned that you were studying the Bible 00:00:40.94\00:00:42.74 as a young man and that moved you into faith. 00:00:42.77\00:00:45.21 Had there been any thoughts 00:00:45.24\00:00:47.94 or Bible texts that have really been 00:00:47.98\00:00:49.41 your guiding light? 00:00:49.44\00:00:50.78 As I said you know, when I became an Adventist 00:00:50.81\00:00:54.05 or a Christian really, the text that you know, 00:00:54.08\00:00:57.82 "Seek first the kingdom of God" 00:00:57.85\00:00:59.52 was very impressive for me and I took that really. 00:00:59.55\00:01:04.03 And but after when I became 00:01:04.06\00:01:06.46 an Adventist and that changed my life. 00:01:06.49\00:01:08.40 I had to face many challenges, you know, to study again 00:01:08.43\00:01:11.70 and so on and so on. 00:01:11.73\00:01:13.10 And normally I should have said that's not possible. 00:01:13.13\00:01:15.84 But another text came to my mind 00:01:15.87\00:01:17.67 was the word of Jesus, 00:01:17.71\00:01:19.44 "Everything is possible for the one, 00:01:19.47\00:01:21.91 for he who believes, everything is possible." 00:01:21.94\00:01:25.38 And I said, "with God everything is possible." 00:01:25.41\00:01:27.62 It means it was like an explosion in my life. 00:01:27.65\00:01:31.22 I had a lot of limitations in my mind. 00:01:31.25\00:01:33.12 You know, many, most of the time, 00:01:33.15\00:01:35.69 the limitations are not physical limitations 00:01:35.72\00:01:38.59 but it's in your mind. 00:01:38.63\00:01:39.96 I thought that I will never able to study 00:01:40.00\00:01:43.77 after the secondary school. 00:01:43.80\00:01:45.73 I thought many things like that. 00:01:45.77\00:01:47.10 I thought that I will never, 00:01:47.14\00:01:48.47 never be able to go to the university. 00:01:48.50\00:01:51.21 Never be able to speak in public 00:01:51.24\00:01:54.18 and to speak another language and so on and so on. 00:01:54.21\00:01:57.45 But you know, the moment 00:01:57.48\00:01:58.81 the way I became Christian, if Jesus in my life, 00:01:58.85\00:02:03.05 everything became possible and I said, 00:02:03.08\00:02:05.22 "With God everything is possible." 00:02:05.25\00:02:07.36 Then after when I had all these challenges 00:02:07.39\00:02:11.79 and I see all of these challenges 00:02:11.83\00:02:13.53 and how God helped me. 00:02:13.56\00:02:16.30 And another verse, that was in 2006, 00:02:16.33\00:02:19.13 I remember well, 00:02:19.17\00:02:20.74 after ten years at the General Conference 00:02:20.77\00:02:22.84 as a director of Religious Freedom, 00:02:22.87\00:02:25.81 I thought that I was re-elected 00:02:25.84\00:02:27.51 and I thought that you know, I have to do something new 00:02:27.54\00:02:30.78 because you know, I don't want just to 00:02:30.81\00:02:33.92 do a regular thing that we have to continue 00:02:33.95\00:02:36.15 the regular thing like the congresses, 00:02:36.18\00:02:38.45 the simple doing... 00:02:38.49\00:02:40.36 but there is something else to do 00:02:40.39\00:02:41.82 and I dreamt about this big, 00:02:41.86\00:02:43.93 you know, festival of Religious Freedom. 00:02:43.96\00:02:45.93 It means big celebration but how to do that. 00:02:45.96\00:02:49.66 how to do that? 00:02:49.70\00:02:51.03 And you know, at this time 00:02:51.07\00:02:52.63 a verse in the Bible, a verse came to me to my mind, 00:02:52.67\00:02:56.91 that was in Deuteronomy, yeah, I read and read again, 00:02:56.94\00:03:00.74 "The Lord will make you the head and not the tail." 00:03:00.78\00:03:03.78 And I think that could be also for my ministry 00:03:03.81\00:03:06.48 not for me personally but for my ministry. 00:03:06.51\00:03:08.82 Well, Adventist pioneer, Ellen White, 00:03:08.85\00:03:10.95 applied that to the Adventist movement, didn't she? 00:03:10.99\00:03:13.89 We ought to be the head and not the tail. 00:03:13.92\00:03:15.26 Yeah, exactly. 00:03:15.29\00:03:16.62 Exactly that applies to Religious Liberty. 00:03:16.66\00:03:18.06 Yeah, this is what I thought 00:03:18.09\00:03:19.43 you know, it has to be applied to every ministry, 00:03:19.46\00:03:22.00 every school, every institution, 00:03:22.03\00:03:23.77 everything which gives to God as you know, as an offering. 00:03:23.80\00:03:28.90 And I said to God, "That's not my problem 00:03:28.94\00:03:32.41 how many people will come, I know that you can do that." 00:03:32.44\00:03:35.84 And I saw the answer, you know, 00:03:35.88\00:03:38.11 that a lot, that's a really miracle 00:03:38.15\00:03:40.65 at the very time, you know, 00:03:40.68\00:03:42.05 someone where in this department 00:03:42.08\00:03:44.82 for a short period of time. 00:03:44.85\00:03:47.02 But the guy who was there, he was able to put 00:03:47.06\00:03:50.13 15,000 people in a stadium at the beginning. 00:03:50.16\00:03:53.83 And it shows to the other 00:03:53.86\00:03:56.83 but 20 people outside, it shows to the other 00:03:56.87\00:04:00.07 that we can do that. 00:04:00.10\00:04:01.44 And after we had a peak with 40, 50,000 people. 00:04:01.47\00:04:05.04 And where was the first program again? 00:04:05.07\00:04:06.88 The first mass festival was in Sao Paulo. 00:04:06.91\00:04:09.18 Yeah, I knew it was in Latin America. 00:04:09.21\00:04:10.55 And Williams Costa, you know, was the organizer. 00:04:10.58\00:04:13.21 And that was fabulous and afterwards in Lima, 00:04:13.25\00:04:15.32 fabulous program, 45,000 people. 00:04:15.35\00:04:18.32 And from the beginning the plan involved 00:04:18.35\00:04:19.99 young people and music, didn't it? 00:04:20.02\00:04:21.99 Young people and music and so on and that was, 00:04:22.02\00:04:25.16 you know, I thought it will happen in 2009 00:04:25.19\00:04:27.93 and it was in 2006. 00:04:27.96\00:04:30.03 It means that when you really 00:04:30.07\00:04:32.97 want to dedicate your life to God, 00:04:33.00\00:04:35.80 don't think that it's not possible. 00:04:35.84\00:04:37.44 Everything is possible for God and God will do it. 00:04:37.47\00:04:41.88 It means you have to say to the Lord, 00:04:41.91\00:04:43.78 "I am here, I do my best but you will do the rest." 00:04:43.81\00:04:49.02 And the last verse, you know, 00:04:49.05\00:04:51.35 because after when things are going well, 00:04:51.39\00:04:53.25 you may forget that you are just... 00:04:53.29\00:04:54.92 You think you are doing it. 00:04:54.96\00:04:56.79 Well, Peter found that out, didn't he? 00:04:56.83\00:04:59.29 Stepped out to meet the Lord on the water 00:04:59.33\00:05:01.00 and then, oh, down you go. 00:05:01.03\00:05:02.93 But in my case, which was interesting 00:05:02.96\00:05:05.37 is that big things were not organized by me. 00:05:05.40\00:05:08.70 It was, I just, you know, brought the seeds 00:05:08.74\00:05:11.94 and people say, "Uh, we can do that." 00:05:11.97\00:05:14.54 But that's more vindicating of our shared goal 00:05:14.58\00:05:17.05 of Seventh Day Adventist that shows that there are 00:05:17.08\00:05:19.18 others who were willing to do this too 00:05:19.21\00:05:20.95 and together right things happen. 00:05:20.98\00:05:22.55 And that was really, you know, 00:05:22.58\00:05:24.39 people realize that that's a good idea 00:05:24.42\00:05:26.45 like the festival of Religious Freedom. 00:05:26.49\00:05:28.79 You know, the idea is to say, thank you God, publicly 00:05:28.82\00:05:32.03 and thank you to my country for Religious freedom 00:05:32.06\00:05:35.20 and the message is 00:05:35.23\00:05:36.56 "we love Religious Freedom and we want to keep it." 00:05:36.60\00:05:38.53 You know people can get that and say, 00:05:38.57\00:05:40.57 "We can do that." 00:05:40.60\00:05:41.94 You have to find but everywhere you have people 00:05:41.97\00:05:43.87 that are able to do that. 00:05:43.91\00:05:45.24 And it's not necessary, this is a rhetorical question, 00:05:45.27\00:05:48.64 that the country that you're doing it 00:05:48.68\00:05:50.01 in is circumspect in every regard 00:05:50.05\00:05:53.92 on Religious Liberty 00:05:53.95\00:05:55.28 because you are granting them the benefit of the doubt. 00:05:55.32\00:05:56.65 Exactly. 00:05:56.69\00:05:58.02 That this is the country, that is in their interest. 00:05:58.05\00:05:59.92 You don't say that they are perfect. 00:05:59.95\00:06:01.32 But you say, 00:06:01.36\00:06:02.69 "Hey, religious freedom is important for us, 00:06:02.72\00:06:04.46 we may not have the total." 00:06:04.49\00:06:05.89 And thank you for what you've done to facilitate that. 00:06:05.93\00:06:07.60 But still thank you because you know, 00:06:07.63\00:06:10.80 we have meeting, we have church, 00:06:10.83\00:06:12.27 we have hospital, we have institution and so on, 00:06:12.30\00:06:14.97 thank you for that. 00:06:15.00\00:06:16.34 There are so many places around the world 00:06:16.37\00:06:18.07 where people cannot have. 00:06:18.11\00:06:19.71 And the last one was, be humble yourself, 00:06:19.74\00:06:24.21 humble yourself on the mighty hand of God 00:06:24.25\00:06:27.95 and I like it very much because it said, the text said, 00:06:27.98\00:06:30.95 "He may you know, rise up in the due time." 00:06:30.99\00:06:37.13 I don't know what you've learned 00:06:37.16\00:06:38.49 but I've learned that life tends to be humbling anyway. 00:06:38.53\00:06:41.33 Better to give it to God and recognize 00:06:41.36\00:06:44.07 that you have to be humble before him 00:06:44.10\00:06:45.53 than to find out the hard way 00:06:45.57\00:06:48.30 before life, it beats you down. 00:06:48.34\00:06:49.67 Absolutely true. 00:06:49.70\00:06:51.07 This is why, you know, 00:06:51.11\00:06:52.47 sometime when something good happened, 00:06:52.51\00:06:54.84 well, you can say, "Oh, I did very well." 00:06:54.88\00:06:56.78 Very often just after something comes and hits. 00:06:56.81\00:06:59.91 What is that, "Pride goes before the fall?" 00:06:59.95\00:07:02.82 But I know you've done some wonderful things 00:07:02.85\00:07:05.12 you've been the lead person 00:07:05.15\00:07:07.92 to facilitate some very inspiring things 00:07:07.96\00:07:10.26 on Religious Liberty 00:07:10.29\00:07:11.63 and that might be forgotten easily, 00:07:11.66\00:07:13.40 more than forgotten, that won't be let go of. 00:07:13.43\00:07:15.63 Others are going to follow through 00:07:15.66\00:07:17.00 and carry this on and... 00:07:17.03\00:07:18.83 We have already planned for the future 00:07:18.87\00:07:20.64 and I hope that... 00:07:20.67\00:07:22.07 And you'll be there in some of them. I'm sure. 00:07:22.10\00:07:23.61 You're not going to be, they are not taking away 00:07:23.64\00:07:26.44 your frequent flying experience. 00:07:26.47\00:07:29.04 We have a World Congress, we have a World Festival 00:07:29.08\00:07:32.01 and now we are trying to develop 00:07:32.05\00:07:34.05 Continental congresses and Continental festivals. 00:07:34.08\00:07:37.42 And where is the next World Congress? 00:07:37.45\00:07:38.95 That's down in US I think. 00:07:38.99\00:07:40.32 It will be in US, it will be in 2017 00:07:40.36\00:07:44.79 and next World Festival, we are talking about 00:07:44.83\00:07:48.36 maybe in the US or maybe in Peru again, 00:07:48.40\00:07:50.67 in Lima and some places 00:07:50.70\00:07:52.67 where we can bring people really. 00:07:52.70\00:07:54.80 In Peru, you can get the huge crowd there. 00:07:54.84\00:07:57.97 Almost every year we will have an international, 00:07:58.01\00:08:00.08 a big international event. 00:08:00.11\00:08:02.04 It means that you maintain or you develop the, what is it? 00:08:02.08\00:08:06.92 Infrastructure. 00:08:06.95\00:08:08.28 The infrastructure you develop, 00:08:08.32\00:08:09.78 people are able to promote Religious Freedom, 00:08:09.82\00:08:12.72 the awareness of the authorities, 00:08:12.75\00:08:14.56 of the government and after, of course what is happening now 00:08:14.59\00:08:18.19 it's, you know, people ask us to do 00:08:18.23\00:08:19.89 more and more things. 00:08:19.93\00:08:21.26 Even government ask us. 00:08:21.30\00:08:22.93 Even organization, powerful organization ask us 00:08:22.96\00:08:25.93 to be a part of their programs and we have more and more... 00:08:25.97\00:08:30.77 I mean, this aspect of it is a very positive PR aspect. 00:08:30.81\00:08:34.78 I can't imagine any public entity 00:08:34.81\00:08:37.95 or a government being opposed to it. 00:08:37.98\00:08:39.51 They just need to see the model 00:08:39.55\00:08:41.15 and then they'll want it, like you're finding out. 00:08:41.18\00:08:42.88 Yes and sometimes, you know, people don't see, 00:08:42.92\00:08:44.75 "Yeah, you know, you organize a big meeting 00:08:44.79\00:08:46.72 but doesn't help really those who are persecuted." 00:08:46.76\00:08:49.89 Yes, because it opens many doors. 00:08:49.92\00:08:52.99 You know, when you have to deal with a government, 00:08:53.03\00:08:56.36 if you know people from another country, it helps. 00:08:56.40\00:08:59.73 They can introduce you. Absolutely. 00:08:59.77\00:09:01.64 And when you have people visiting the countries, 00:09:01.67\00:09:04.44 from government where you have Christians persecuted, 00:09:04.47\00:09:07.58 all the believers persecuted and you want to deal with that. 00:09:07.61\00:09:11.28 You can be invited and talk... 00:09:11.31\00:09:15.25 I just you know, was invited for a meeting 00:09:15.28\00:09:19.49 with Prime Minister for a country 00:09:19.52\00:09:21.52 where people are really under a lot of restriction. 00:09:21.56\00:09:27.00 It could be an opportunity to talk with him 00:09:27.03\00:09:29.20 and to defend Religious Freedom. 00:09:29.23\00:09:31.17 And do you know the line of causality, 00:09:31.20\00:09:33.80 what made him aware of Religious Liberty 00:09:33.84\00:09:37.01 and the need to talk to you? 00:09:37.04\00:09:38.37 Do you know? Wonderful. 00:11:04.66\00:11:07.13 Great interview, yes, as a President, 00:11:07.16\00:11:10.00 he said to- I don't frankly speaking 00:11:10.03\00:11:13.03 I don't remember having heard another religious leader, 00:11:13.07\00:11:16.91 top religious leader speaking like him 00:11:16.94\00:11:19.31 about Religious Freedom. 00:11:19.34\00:11:20.68 Yeah, that's good and we hope 00:11:20.71\00:11:22.04 that it continues, pray that it continues. 00:11:22.08\00:11:23.41 Yeah, pray. 00:11:23.45\00:11:24.78 So that could be your farewell gift 00:11:24.81\00:11:27.88 to have one last indoctrination session 00:11:27.92\00:11:31.22 with our church leader. 00:11:31.25\00:11:32.82 But I'm sure that this is going to continue. 00:11:32.85\00:11:35.16 There are just so many imperatives to that, 00:11:35.19\00:11:39.03 no leader, no church can ignore this anymore. 00:11:39.06\00:11:41.86 As we said in another program, 00:11:41.90\00:11:43.77 Religious Liberty in the negative 00:11:43.80\00:11:45.53 is seen by an unprecedented persecution of Christians 00:11:45.57\00:11:48.37 and others minorities around the world. 00:11:48.40\00:11:50.97 Yeah, and you know, 00:11:51.01\00:11:52.34 what I would say Lincoln is... 00:11:52.37\00:11:54.81 It has been a great adventure we've got 00:11:54.84\00:11:57.48 and defending Religious Freedom for me. 00:11:57.51\00:11:59.28 It's a really a ministry and I am serving, 00:11:59.31\00:12:02.08 I am serving God in doing it. 00:12:02.12\00:12:05.15 Listening to Dr. John Graz 00:12:05.19\00:12:07.69 give some reminiscences of his service 00:12:07.72\00:12:10.63 for the church and for Religious Liberty 00:12:10.66\00:12:13.19 and thinking of what that really means 00:12:13.23\00:12:15.03 for those of us that remain behind, 00:12:15.06\00:12:17.77 I can't help but thinking 00:12:17.80\00:12:19.13 in the Bible of the story of Elijah, 00:12:19.17\00:12:22.07 preparing on instructions, I'm sure to meet the Lord 00:12:22.10\00:12:27.14 and go to heaven and his disciple, Elisha, 00:12:27.18\00:12:31.41 saying, "You don't leave now, 00:12:31.45\00:12:32.78 I'm not going to let you out of my sight." 00:12:32.81\00:12:35.18 We need to realize that there's a continuum in service 00:12:35.22\00:12:39.32 and that the Elijahs might 00:12:39.35\00:12:41.39 move on to another phase of work 00:12:41.42\00:12:43.86 but there are Elishas that remain behind 00:12:43.89\00:12:47.06 and with this great cloud of witnesses 00:12:47.10\00:12:49.20 as the Bible says, those that have gone before us, 00:12:49.23\00:12:51.93 we need to realize that the challenge remains 00:12:51.97\00:12:54.84 and that Religious Liberty 00:12:54.87\00:12:56.20 is such an important component of the gospel commission 00:12:56.24\00:13:00.24 that many others would be following in, behind Dr. Graz 00:13:00.28\00:13:04.98 and that the great work will be done 00:13:05.01\00:13:07.32 and the challenging times now up and standing, 00:13:07.35\00:13:09.78 a great message and a proclamation 00:13:09.82\00:13:11.65 for Religious Liberty will be given. 00:13:11.69\00:13:15.02 For Liberty Insider, I'm Lincoln Steed. 00:13:15.06\00:13:18.26
