00:01:56.68\00:01:58.01 Yeah, you know my father was Protestant 00:01:58.05\00:01:59.98 he did not go to church. 00:02:00.02\00:02:01.35 And my mother was Catholic, she was a formal Catholic. 00:02:01.38\00:02:04.22 But my grandmother was very much involved in the church. 00:02:04.25\00:02:08.42 She was a Catholic and really a-- 00:02:08.46\00:02:11.36 she communicate to me the faith in God. 00:02:11.39\00:02:14.40 And my aunt on my father's side was an Adventist 00:02:14.43\00:02:19.83 and she also communicate the love of the Bible. 00:02:19.87\00:02:23.44 But you know, when I was 13-years-old 00:02:23.47\00:02:25.81 I decided that religion was no good, not good 00:02:25.84\00:02:30.15 and I became agnostic 00:02:30.18\00:02:32.45 or I don't know what but I did not believe-- 00:02:32.48\00:02:34.25 You took a time out of this knowing teenagers how they-- 00:02:34.28\00:02:37.02 And at 18 my cousin was really a very good Adventist 00:02:37.05\00:02:42.32 and died from leukemia and that was an occasion, 00:02:42.36\00:02:47.00 opportunity for me to meet Adventist 00:02:47.03\00:02:49.06 and to talk with them and to had a Bible 00:02:49.10\00:02:52.30 and I started to read the gospel. 00:02:52.33\00:02:55.04 And during the three days-- days and night, 00:02:55.07\00:02:57.57 you know, I was fighting. 00:02:57.61\00:02:59.37 I thought like I did not hear any thing 00:02:59.41\00:03:03.24 but I had strong pressure on my mind 00:03:03.28\00:03:06.98 and my heart to follow Jesus because when I read the gospel 00:03:07.02\00:03:10.65 I was so moved that I remember, you know, I cannot sleep 00:03:10.69\00:03:16.26 and when finally in the middle of the night 00:03:16.29\00:03:19.13 I was ready to sleep. 00:03:19.16\00:03:20.50 I thought yeah, tomorrow I will become Christian. 00:03:20.53\00:03:22.90 But in the morning when I got up 00:03:22.93\00:03:24.60 I said, no, no, I don't want. 00:03:24.63\00:03:26.30 I'm becoming crazy now. 00:03:26.33\00:03:28.27 I don't know what, I'm becoming insane. 00:03:28.30\00:03:29.97 I don't want to become Christian. 00:03:30.01\00:03:32.14 And finally after a three night, three days, 00:03:32.17\00:03:34.74 you know, the pressure was so strong 00:03:34.78\00:03:38.38 now I said that the only way to find peace 00:03:38.41\00:03:41.65 is really to become Christina 00:03:41.68\00:03:44.09 and I decided to become a disciple of Jesus. 00:03:44.12\00:03:47.16 But that was really-- it changed my life totally, 00:03:47.19\00:03:50.66 you know, totally. 00:03:50.69\00:03:53.06 It changed everything in my life in a few days. 00:03:53.09\00:03:55.90 So that was your Damascus sleep of-- 00:03:55.93\00:03:57.93 Yeah. 00:03:57.97\00:03:59.67 And now you believe God works on people's hearts. 00:03:59.70\00:04:01.97 Of course you know, I-- 00:04:02.00\00:04:03.34 Beyond the convictions so-- 00:04:03.37\00:04:04.71 I grew up in a family where my, 00:04:04.74\00:04:06.31 from both side of my family father and mother 00:04:06.34\00:04:09.34 they were very involved in defending freedom. 00:04:09.38\00:04:12.21 My grandfather died in a concentration camps 00:04:12.25\00:04:14.95 because he was arrested helping French resistant, 00:04:14.98\00:04:18.52 helping some Jews to and my uncle was killed 00:04:18.55\00:04:22.09 because he was fighting with the ally. 00:04:22.12\00:04:24.13 All my brothers and sister of my mother 00:04:24.16\00:04:29.60 were involved with the ally. 00:04:29.63\00:04:31.23 You know, they crossed the Atlantic, 00:04:31.27\00:04:33.03 they went to fighting with the American and the English. 00:04:33.07\00:04:36.67 It means the concept of freedom 00:04:36.71\00:04:39.04 was very strong in our family, justice and freedom. 00:04:39.07\00:04:42.61 I grew up with this idea that every people should be free. 00:04:42.64\00:04:47.52 That's-- it gives another-- 00:04:47.55\00:04:49.65 then when I became Adventist, 00:04:49.68\00:04:51.25 you know, I decided I was working 00:04:51.29\00:04:53.02 in a printed house and printing house 00:04:53.05\00:04:56.39 and I decided to become pastor. 00:04:56.42\00:04:58.59 I said, I don't want to be a half Christian, 00:04:58.63\00:05:01.96 I want to give my life to God. 00:05:02.00\00:05:04.60 And as I explained, you know, just a few days ago 00:05:04.63\00:05:09.94 at the General Conference, you know, the verse, 00:05:09.97\00:05:12.87 the biblical the Bible verse was, 00:05:12.91\00:05:15.54 "Seek first the kingdom of God." 00:05:15.58\00:05:17.25 I said there is no room in my life for-- 00:05:17.28\00:05:19.98 I know the space I want to belong totally to God 00:05:20.02\00:05:25.25 and I want to serve Him, how can I do that? 00:05:25.29\00:05:27.99 Maybe if I'm pastor I will give all my life, 00:05:28.02\00:05:31.39 all my time to God. 00:05:31.43\00:05:32.76 And that-- 00:05:32.79\00:05:34.13 And you were youth director initially, weren't you? 00:05:34.16\00:05:35.50 No, no. 00:05:35.53\00:05:36.87 This time I went to school to the Adventist school 00:05:36.90\00:05:39.80 and I started again. 00:05:39.83\00:05:42.00 You know, in secondary school 00:05:42.04\00:05:44.07 I was a very young kids, I have to learn 00:05:44.11\00:05:48.68 and because I was not able to speak in public, 00:05:48.71\00:05:50.95 not able to write correctly and sort of everything. 00:05:50.98\00:05:54.28 And I did and I learned very important lesson that, 00:05:54.32\00:05:59.72 you know, first life is a great adventure. 00:05:59.75\00:06:02.12 Secondly do your best wherever you are 00:06:02.16\00:06:05.19 because God wants you to be there, 00:06:05.23\00:06:07.56 wherever you are but do your best 00:06:07.60\00:06:10.23 and let God to open other doors, 00:06:10.27\00:06:13.54 if they want, if He wants and it has led my life. 00:06:13.57\00:06:16.60 And I saw every year, you know, new doors open 00:06:16.64\00:06:19.37 and finally I went to the university 00:06:19.41\00:06:21.21 and I passed my doctorate at the best school, 00:06:21.24\00:06:25.05 one of the best school in Europe. 00:06:25.08\00:06:27.02 That means I was totally something 00:06:27.05\00:06:29.22 that I even could not imagine before I became Christian. 00:06:29.25\00:06:34.19 I thought that I will never, never do 00:06:34.22\00:06:36.49 anything like that, you know. 00:06:36.52\00:06:37.86 So God's taken you on a heady ride. 00:06:37.89\00:06:40.56 You had no idea where you were getting off. 00:06:40.60\00:06:41.93 And life became really a great adventure 00:06:41.96\00:06:44.83 and that was fabulous, you know. 00:06:44.87\00:06:47.34 But I see God then I had to go to the military service. 00:06:47.37\00:06:51.67 And you know, when you arrive the first thing had to say that 00:06:51.71\00:06:54.64 I don't work tomorrow because it's Saturday. 00:06:54.68\00:06:56.91 You can imagine when you are a young guy, 00:06:56.95\00:06:59.31 you have to face there office. 00:06:59.35\00:07:00.72 This was the Swiss military? 00:07:00.75\00:07:02.18 No, I was living in France, this time it was they had 00:07:02.22\00:07:04.89 an agreement between Swiss and France. 00:07:04.92\00:07:06.96 As I was living in France I went to French Army. 00:07:06.99\00:07:10.43 And you know the first thing you said to the colonel 00:07:10.46\00:07:14.76 or sorry but, you know, tomorrow I don't work. 00:07:14.80\00:07:17.83 Why? And tonight too. 00:07:17.87\00:07:19.37 Why? 00:07:19.40\00:07:20.74 Because it' Saturday Sabbath, I'm Adventist. 00:07:20.77\00:07:23.20 People say who is this guy? What is he doing? 00:07:23.24\00:07:25.67 And I had to fight really but fortunately at this time 00:07:25.71\00:07:29.41 you know, people were more open that now than today 00:07:29.44\00:07:32.95 and there was-- they were very helpful to me. 00:07:32.98\00:07:36.38 But I remember also a story, 00:07:36.42\00:07:38.99 you know, where it' always connected 00:07:39.02\00:07:41.32 with religious freedom. 00:07:41.36\00:07:42.72 The first night in the army and it was a dormitory, 00:07:42.76\00:07:46.26 it had a 30, 35 young soldiers there 00:07:46.29\00:07:51.00 and as I used to do I kneel down by my bed 00:07:51.03\00:07:56.30 and I start to pray. 00:07:56.34\00:07:57.67 And you know, you had a lot of noise-- 00:07:57.71\00:08:00.01 I can imagine, they were almost 00:08:00.04\00:08:01.68 probably trying to give you just to show you. 00:08:01.71\00:08:04.25 And at the end of my prayer, you know, that was very quiet. 00:08:04.28\00:08:08.55 I said, my, something happened. 00:08:08.58\00:08:10.35 I opened my eyes and I looked around. 00:08:10.39\00:08:13.12 All the soldiers were around me and they look at me. 00:08:13.15\00:08:15.72 Watching you. 00:08:15.76\00:08:17.09 They were really, what you are doing? 00:08:17.13\00:08:18.46 What is this guy doing? 00:08:18.49\00:08:20.66 And someone came and say, are you Muslim? 00:08:20.70\00:08:24.77 I say, no, I'm Christian. I'm an Adventist. 00:08:24.80\00:08:28.10 And I saw so many opportunity 00:08:28.14\00:08:30.67 to share my faith during this time 00:08:30.71\00:08:34.11 which was not really an easy time 00:08:34.14\00:08:35.88 but still and the God opened the door so many times that 00:08:35.91\00:08:40.82 even during these time of military service 00:08:40.85\00:08:43.65 I was able to pass my exam to go to the universities. 00:08:43.69\00:08:49.69 That's the background-- 00:08:49.72\00:08:51.69 But then you were a pastor for sometime. 00:08:51.73\00:08:53.36 Then I'm a pastor, youth leader. 00:08:53.40\00:08:55.33 I work at the University of Montpellier, 00:08:55.36\00:08:58.63 I study at the university but I work for the church. 00:08:58.67\00:09:01.04 And we visited, 00:09:01.07\00:09:02.40 I had the privilege of visiting Montpellier. 00:09:02.44\00:09:04.24 And what is it a year and half ago? 00:09:04.27\00:09:05.91 Yeah. 00:09:05.94\00:09:07.64 We had 20 some of us we were on a bus tour with you. 00:09:07.68\00:09:10.88 Yeah. 00:09:10.91\00:09:12.25 It's the reformation tour but some of us joked 00:09:12.28\00:09:14.48 that this was the John Graz's career tour 00:09:14.52\00:09:17.52 because we were retracing some of those spots you worked. 00:09:17.55\00:09:21.16 And you know, connected with religious freedom. 00:09:21.19\00:09:23.66 Montpellier, was the place where the Protestant 00:09:23.69\00:09:25.63 were very strong and they were prosecuted. 00:09:25.66\00:09:28.00 And we visited, you remember the Tower of Constance. 00:09:28.03\00:09:32.20 Marie Durand was there for 37 years 00:09:32.23\00:09:36.34 because she refused to recant her faith. 00:09:36.37\00:09:38.77 Thirty seven years. 00:09:38.81\00:09:41.31 And then we saw in the stone where she scratched resist. 00:09:41.34\00:09:44.31 Resist. Yeah, yeah. 00:09:44.35\00:09:45.68 And of course, that this connected 00:09:45.71\00:09:47.38 with religious freedom. 00:09:47.42\00:09:48.75 You know, it means I was very open, 00:09:48.78\00:09:51.15 very sensitive about religious freedom about 00:09:51.19\00:09:54.56 the suffering of minorities in some countries 00:09:54.59\00:09:57.13 where you don't have religious freedom. 00:09:57.16\00:09:59.09 So was it that period that you started 00:09:59.13\00:10:00.70 to get into religious liberty work? 00:10:00.73\00:10:02.70 No, I was communication director 00:10:02.73\00:10:05.57 but I was always interested. 00:10:05.60\00:10:07.10 I organized the tour 00:10:07.14\00:10:09.10 of the religious liberty leader, 00:10:09.14\00:10:11.01 the conference, lectures and so on. 00:10:11.04\00:10:14.48 Then after I was during six years 00:10:14.51\00:10:17.25 very involved in the youth ministry, 00:10:17.28\00:10:19.45 communication 10 years at the European level for US 00:10:19.48\00:10:23.82 and then you have still a connection 00:10:23.85\00:10:26.65 because I organize congresses. 00:10:26.69\00:10:29.12 I organize meetings and of course when I came 00:10:29.16\00:10:32.49 to religious freedom I came with these experiences 00:10:32.53\00:10:36.23 of congresses international meeting and so on 00:10:36.26\00:10:40.10 and after I was called at the General Conference 00:10:40.14\00:10:42.17 after 10 years the division level 00:10:42.20\00:10:45.04 as communication and US director. 00:10:45.07\00:10:49.58 But they believed that you are skills 00:10:49.61\00:10:53.55 were in religious liberty. 00:10:53.58\00:10:55.02 I think I always wanted, 00:10:55.05\00:10:56.79 you know, have always had these idea 00:10:56.82\00:10:58.79 that one day I would be very happy. 00:10:58.82\00:11:01.39 You know, after my time with the US 00:11:01.42\00:11:03.12 where I learn a lot of things 00:11:03.16\00:11:05.46 I would be very happy to work for the religious freedom. 00:11:05.49\00:11:08.36 Yeah, and that's the and we've discussed 00:11:08.40\00:11:10.60 on other programs and other times with you, 00:11:10.63\00:11:13.00 you know, to involve the youth 00:11:13.03\00:11:14.54 with religious liberty is still the big challenge. 00:11:14.57\00:11:16.94 Yeah. But-- 00:11:16.97\00:11:18.31 To pass the torch to the next generation. 00:11:18.34\00:11:19.67 You know, when we have, when we have 00:11:19.71\00:11:21.14 a festival of religious freedom 70 person-- 00:11:21.18\00:11:23.75 You get a lot of young people 00:11:23.78\00:11:25.11 and that's the great success of that I think. 00:11:25.15\00:11:26.55 And they pass the torch, you know, we start 00:11:26.58\00:11:30.55 the festival of religious freedom 00:11:30.59\00:11:31.92 with pipe thunder march. 00:11:31.95\00:11:33.59 They bring the flag of the country on the platform. 00:11:33.62\00:11:36.73 That's a beautiful and very often, 00:11:36.76\00:11:38.66 you know, the presenter play about Joseph 00:11:38.69\00:11:42.16 or about Daniel, about Moses. 00:11:42.20\00:11:43.83 I remember seeing that about the programs. 00:11:43.87\00:11:45.30 You remember. 00:11:45.33\00:11:46.67 Back forth one in Dominican Republic. 00:11:46.70\00:11:49.04 Yeah. And they continue to do that. 00:11:49.07\00:11:50.51 Crossing the Red Sea I remember the cloth 00:11:50.54\00:11:53.58 they were waving and yeah, very impressive. 00:11:53.61\00:11:55.51 And you know, when you see Moses 00:11:55.54\00:11:56.88 and people applaud that's fabulous. 00:11:56.91\00:12:00.28 And also you know, you can see young people 00:12:00.32\00:12:03.08 in the concert because we can do-- 00:12:03.12\00:12:05.02 we try to encourage a concert of religious freedom. 00:12:05.05\00:12:07.82 Religious freedom concert and many other activities. 00:12:07.86\00:12:11.36 Well, you know, I believe we need to involve young people 00:12:11.39\00:12:13.53 but it's a greater imperative to live before 00:12:13.56\00:12:16.13 because I'm sure you noticed that 00:12:16.16\00:12:17.83 when you travel the world many, if not most countries 00:12:17.87\00:12:21.30 that populations are overwhelmingly young. 00:12:21.34\00:12:24.31 There's any number of countries 00:12:24.34\00:12:25.67 that two thirds of the country are below mid to late 20s. 00:12:25.71\00:12:30.31 Exactly. 00:12:30.35\00:12:31.78 So we had-- 00:12:31.81\00:12:33.15 some have to pass the baton to that generation. 00:12:33.18\00:12:36.42 And they have to understand that 00:12:36.45\00:12:37.79 if you don't have religious freedom 00:12:37.82\00:12:39.39 what are you doing? 00:12:39.42\00:12:40.76 What are you doing as believer? 00:12:40.79\00:12:42.39 Yep, absolutely we need to be active. 00:12:42.42\00:12:44.39 We will take a break now and I will rejoin 00:12:44.43\00:12:46.93 and you too I hope rejoin John Graz 00:12:46.96\00:12:49.20 talking about a great career. 00:12:49.23\00:12:51.60 It's not over but it's peaked, career in religious liberty. 00:12:51.63\00:12:56.17 Yeah, thank you. 00:12:56.20\00:12:58.34
