Welcome back to the "Liberty Insider." 00:00:03.16\00:00:04.93 Before the break, with Dr. John Graz 00:00:04.97\00:00:08.60 we were talking a bit about a historical moment 00:00:08.64\00:00:12.27 soon to come with the pope of Rome, Francis, 00:00:12.31\00:00:15.91 he's going to address the joint session of congress 00:00:15.94\00:00:20.22 and I don't think I'd said that but I'm suggesting 00:00:20.25\00:00:25.25 that he probably will float before congress 00:00:25.29\00:00:29.79 the family rest day and we had been discussing 00:00:29.82\00:00:33.70 that Its been discussed widely in Europe 00:00:33.73\00:00:38.63 its origins are not real clear but once it appeared 00:00:38.67\00:00:42.67 all of the churches 00:00:42.70\00:00:44.04 and the dominant catholic church in Europe 00:00:44.07\00:00:46.24 has been very aggressive in promoting this, 00:00:46.27\00:00:52.18 but it has social advantages, it has economic advantages, 00:00:52.21\00:00:56.28 energy saving, regenerate society and so on. 00:00:56.32\00:00:59.59 There's really no logical thing against it. 00:00:59.62\00:01:03.46 It put a kind of protection from the economic-- 00:01:03.49\00:01:06.76 economy and those who say that, 00:01:06.80\00:01:08.93 you know, the most important is to get more money, 00:01:08.96\00:01:12.13 to have more people working 00:01:12.17\00:01:14.17 and that's about quality of life of course. 00:01:14.20\00:01:16.77 It emphasizes the spirit of the times 00:01:16.81\00:01:18.61 post 2008 collapse in particular 00:01:18.64\00:01:23.81 but from a prophetic point of view 00:01:23.85\00:01:25.85 and what we have seen dominant churches 00:01:25.88\00:01:30.39 and in particularly the dominant church Rome 00:01:30.42\00:01:33.59 during the middle ages do it, 00:01:33.62\00:01:35.19 you know there's some reason to take pause. 00:01:35.22\00:01:37.43 I think he will mention it because I've noticed not only 00:01:37.46\00:01:40.06 is he talking little up lately in Europe 00:01:40.10\00:01:42.93 well everywhere but in particular in Europe 00:01:42.96\00:01:45.17 but the day before he address this Congress 00:01:45.20\00:01:48.37 he is meeting with the world federation 00:01:48.40\00:01:52.44 or whatever of family. 00:01:52.47\00:01:54.54 So I know the day before he'll be talking about it 00:01:54.58\00:01:57.55 and I would think fresh with that he's gonna float it. 00:01:57.58\00:02:01.32 Yeah, this is right and its not a you know talking 00:02:01.35\00:02:04.15 to some of your Adventist 00:02:04.19\00:02:05.52 he was that no are our expectation based on prophecy 00:02:05.55\00:02:08.39 that at some point there'll be again a very avert 00:02:08.42\00:02:11.86 Sunday law this is not it. 00:02:11.89\00:02:14.30 But it could be a sort of a light slope into it. 00:02:14.33\00:02:18.27 Exactly, everything which is connected with Sunday 00:02:18.30\00:02:20.90 or Sunday law its important for us to know. 00:02:20.94\00:02:23.77 But I have to say that in Europe, you know, 00:02:23.81\00:02:25.87 it-- the Sunday law was almost applied in almost 00:02:25.91\00:02:30.15 all of the country in Europe. 00:02:30.18\00:02:31.98 You go to England, you go to many-- even in Switzerland 00:02:32.01\00:02:34.82 I remember Sunday you don't have the right 00:02:34.85\00:02:36.95 to do a lot of things. 00:02:36.99\00:02:38.59 If you do that you could be fined. 00:02:38.62\00:02:40.16 Well, there's sun-- yeah, there's Sunday laws some what 00:02:40.19\00:02:43.09 like the blue laws that America used to have. 00:02:43.12\00:02:45.19 Yeah, yeah and it means you know that you are 00:02:45.23\00:02:47.90 but the problem-- the question is, 00:02:47.93\00:02:50.07 "You have the right to go to church on Saturday 00:02:50.10\00:02:52.50 and you have to-- the right not to work on Saturday." 00:02:52.53\00:02:55.70 It means that Sunday alone as it is now 00:02:55.74\00:02:58.44 in most of the country of Europe 00:02:58.47\00:03:01.31 doesn't create a problem for those who don't observe 00:03:01.34\00:03:05.01 Sunday as a day of rest, religious day of rest. 00:03:05.05\00:03:08.55 But you know that's interesting its coming back-- 00:03:08.58\00:03:11.29 Seems to be coming back and-- 00:03:11.32\00:03:12.92 And its coming back first against you know the-- 00:03:12.95\00:03:15.66 those who want to put the economy in the first. 00:03:15.69\00:03:19.29 And also its coming back as in the battle between, 00:03:19.33\00:03:24.30 you know, extreme liberal and you know conservative 00:03:24.33\00:03:29.77 and in some way Christians. 00:03:29.80\00:03:32.01 Who Christian has almost nothing to say it in Europe. 00:03:32.04\00:03:35.14 But with this issue they will come back and say, 00:03:35.18\00:03:38.41 "Hey, we defend people, we defend human right, 00:03:38.45\00:03:43.22 we defend the family, we defend and so on. 00:03:43.25\00:03:46.12 You don't care about the family. 00:03:46.15\00:03:47.49 You want all people work on even on Sunday. 00:03:47.52\00:03:49.96 We say, no, family are more important than business." 00:03:49.99\00:03:54.30 And I wouldn't equate it but I'll still mention this 00:03:54.33\00:03:57.33 by way of parallel. 00:03:57.37\00:03:59.43 The Nazi regime in Germany had some rather 00:03:59.47\00:04:03.30 sinister aspects to their agenda. 00:04:03.34\00:04:05.24 But they came to power on same thing, 00:04:05.27\00:04:06.94 appealing the family values, lowering crime 00:04:06.98\00:04:10.25 against immorality and so on. 00:04:10.28\00:04:11.75 And this is why-- 00:04:11.78\00:04:13.11 So while these are valid, 00:04:13.15\00:04:14.88 very valid in the family rest day. 00:04:14.92\00:04:17.29 I don't think it's just a PR point. 00:04:17.32\00:04:19.52 It will do this. 00:04:19.55\00:04:20.89 It will shift the focus from big business 00:04:20.92\00:04:24.83 and economic growth 00:04:24.86\00:04:26.19 that overcast back to family values, 00:04:26.23\00:04:28.60 community values, energy saving and so on. 00:04:28.63\00:04:31.67 But I believe that it's just 00:04:31.70\00:04:34.90 a first step on a larger agenda. 00:04:34.94\00:04:37.67 No, I don't have to know what's said behind closed doors. 00:04:37.71\00:04:40.04 I just know that it's the nature of all religions 00:04:40.08\00:04:42.54 in power to want to as a paper document 00:04:42.58\00:04:47.05 said the India's dominant. 00:04:47.08\00:04:49.08 They should work to have civil legislations to support 00:04:49.12\00:04:52.05 the day of worship. 00:04:52.09\00:04:53.56 That will be the go of something like this 00:04:53.59\00:04:56.42 I think to enforce it by law 00:04:56.46\00:04:58.23 that you go to church on a certain day. 00:04:58.26\00:05:01.73 And of course for those who don't share this point of view 00:05:01.76\00:05:04.87 like Adventist, Jews and some other-- 00:05:04.90\00:05:07.40 There have been some exemptions initially. 00:05:07.44\00:05:09.00 We had some proposals in this discussion. 00:05:09.04\00:05:11.17 And I always said that you know 00:05:11.21\00:05:12.54 we understand that was our position. 00:05:12.57\00:05:14.74 We understand that we need a day of rest. 00:05:14.78\00:05:17.15 There is no problem and the tradition in Europe 00:05:17.18\00:05:19.91 has always been the Sunday the day of rest. 00:05:19.95\00:05:22.45 But now you have to think about those who don't have 00:05:22.48\00:05:26.02 the same day of rest according to what they believe. 00:05:26.05\00:05:29.42 It means if you make a proposal mention that the freedom 00:05:29.46\00:05:35.16 should be given to those 00:05:35.20\00:05:36.97 who don't have the same day of rest. 00:05:37.00\00:05:40.04 It means okay the majority will have this Sunday 00:05:40.07\00:05:43.47 as a day of rest. 00:05:43.51\00:05:44.84 But those who don't have should be respected 00:05:44.87\00:05:47.28 and if they don't want to work 00:05:47.31\00:05:49.68 because they have religious conviction on Saturday 00:05:49.71\00:05:53.11 they should be protected. 00:05:53.15\00:05:54.88 That would be our suggestion 00:05:54.92\00:05:57.09 and I'm not sure that it will work. 00:05:57.12\00:05:58.72 Well, I'm thinking the time of liberal openness 00:05:58.75\00:06:01.92 that would be accepted. 00:06:01.96\00:06:03.93 But the nature of things is things toughen up 00:06:03.96\00:06:06.56 and perhaps some stress has come along 00:06:06.59\00:06:08.40 like continued terrorism and so on. 00:06:08.43\00:06:10.60 We might find that there's not so-- 00:06:10.63\00:06:12.43 And of course after you have adjusted minorities, you know, 00:06:12.47\00:06:15.40 and the minority are not really 00:06:15.44\00:06:17.37 very strong to face a kind of movement. 00:06:17.41\00:06:21.74 It means we have to follow that very carefully. 00:06:21.78\00:06:24.18 It's interesting because Sunday is coming back and we have to 00:06:24.21\00:06:28.58 make sure that religious freedom 00:06:28.62\00:06:31.45 will be protected at least. 00:06:31.49\00:06:34.19 You know every time, every time you have a problem or an attack 00:06:34.22\00:06:37.76 on religious freedom at the same time it gives you 00:06:37.79\00:06:41.56 the possibility to do something-- 00:06:41.60\00:06:44.27 And to talk positively. And to talk positively about. 00:06:44.30\00:06:46.74 This is-- I see that as an opportunity. 00:06:46.77\00:06:48.60 Absolutely. 00:06:48.64\00:06:49.97 I have said it on this program before and I need to go 00:06:50.01\00:06:51.84 and check whether this is so well. 00:06:51.87\00:06:53.38 I didn't check but it's a powerful 00:06:53.41\00:06:55.41 but this supposedly an oriental saying 00:06:55.44\00:06:58.18 that a crisis is dangerous opportunity. 00:06:58.21\00:07:00.28 Yeah, exactly. 00:07:00.32\00:07:02.48 And so yeah, with the test comes a wonderful chance 00:07:02.52\00:07:06.76 to explain religious liberty and why we object to it. 00:07:06.79\00:07:10.19 And sometime we miss that. 00:07:10.23\00:07:11.69 And you know even talking about 00:07:11.73\00:07:13.26 this national or this family rest day, 00:07:13.29\00:07:17.03 I don't think in itself is anything wrong with it. 00:07:17.07\00:07:19.30 I just see it is part of a larger move 00:07:19.33\00:07:22.47 and the real issue at play 00:07:22.50\00:07:24.14 is separation of church and state. 00:07:24.17\00:07:26.24 If we maintain that principle it will tend to self correct. 00:07:26.27\00:07:29.84 And when some thing like this comes forward 00:07:29.88\00:07:31.61 because it would only be allowed 00:07:31.65\00:07:33.65 if it had a secular purpose and religion. 00:07:33.68\00:07:35.92 But you know this little thing is slipped in. 00:07:35.95\00:07:38.62 This is the day you are encouraged to worship. 00:07:38.65\00:07:40.92 And that's just a little bit dangerous at that point. 00:07:40.96\00:07:43.12 But if it goes to the next step it crossed 00:07:43.16\00:07:44.93 the line of separation of church and state. 00:07:44.96\00:07:47.40 You know, Lincoln, I think that some time we miss 00:07:47.43\00:07:49.76 the opportunity to react when religious freedom was attacked. 00:07:49.80\00:07:53.97 I remember when you had in France 00:07:54.00\00:07:56.37 and in some part of Europe 00:07:56.40\00:07:57.74 you know this big discussion about the headscarf 00:07:57.77\00:08:00.84 of young girl going to school. 00:08:00.88\00:08:03.45 And you know, I remember talking about people 00:08:03.48\00:08:06.51 and many Christians said that's not our problem you know. 00:08:06.55\00:08:10.29 Yes, the state should impose why we have religious symbol. 00:08:10.32\00:08:13.56 And they did not see that 00:08:13.59\00:08:14.92 as you mention that was the first step. 00:08:14.96\00:08:17.56 At the end you know Adventists were concerned 00:08:17.59\00:08:20.60 because people said that with the same principle 00:08:20.63\00:08:25.10 not going to school on Saturday for religious reason 00:08:25.13\00:08:28.10 is like a religious symbol. 00:08:28.14\00:08:30.11 You impose your religion in a system 00:08:30.14\00:08:33.17 and we cannot accept that. 00:08:33.21\00:08:34.84 But if at the beginning we had said, "Okay, 00:08:34.88\00:08:38.45 we see that this is something which attacked 00:08:38.48\00:08:41.48 religious freedom of these young Muslims. 00:08:41.52\00:08:44.39 We should defend them." 00:08:44.42\00:08:46.05 What is the problem to have 00:08:46.09\00:08:47.46 just a headscarf going to school? 00:08:47.49\00:08:49.52 What is the problem? 00:08:49.56\00:08:50.93 You know and on behalf of religious freedom 00:08:50.96\00:08:54.20 we could have been on the frontline. 00:08:54.23\00:08:56.70 Yeah, I think it's a good point 00:08:56.73\00:08:58.23 because you'd know at the same time 00:08:58.27\00:08:59.60 that France was and still is in a process of secularization. 00:08:59.63\00:09:05.81 What's the term you used? Laicite. 00:09:05.84\00:09:08.18 Laicite so that that religion is not, you know, 00:09:08.21\00:09:12.58 there's civil things and there is religion 00:09:12.61\00:09:15.65 For that definite laicite is another ideology. 00:09:15.68\00:09:19.15 You know its-- And it was used aggressively. 00:09:19.19\00:09:20.92 At the beginning you know people believed that 00:09:20.96\00:09:22.42 its neutrality but, you know, that's more than that. 00:09:22.46\00:09:25.29 It's just another ideology. 00:09:25.33\00:09:27.26 And when I was in Chile you know they asked me 00:09:27.30\00:09:29.63 a group of Christians they are who have connection. 00:09:29.66\00:09:33.23 They organize and they work at the Congress in Chile. 00:09:33.27\00:09:37.21 They asked me to speak to the human rights commission. 00:09:37.24\00:09:41.01 And to speak about you know laicite because-- 00:09:41.04\00:09:44.45 they are following the French model. 00:09:44.48\00:09:46.78 And I explained that, you know, if you defend human right 00:09:46.82\00:09:50.72 don't forget that religious freedom 00:09:50.75\00:09:52.92 is one of the basic human rights. 00:09:52.95\00:09:55.16 It's not something that's against human right 00:09:55.19\00:09:57.66 its one of the basic human right. 00:09:57.69\00:09:59.63 And I think its been said accurately that you can gauge 00:09:59.66\00:10:03.03 all civil liberties 00:10:03.06\00:10:04.47 by the stage of religious liberty. 00:10:04.50\00:10:06.74 Yeah, exactly. It's impossible-- 00:10:06.77\00:10:08.64 The freedom of expression, the freedom of association. 00:10:08.67\00:10:10.91 It's impossible to diminish religious liberty 00:10:10.94\00:10:12.94 without affecting all civil liberty. 00:10:12.97\00:10:14.44 Yeah, absolutely. 00:10:14.48\00:10:16.61 And one person I heard say that with some conviction 00:10:16.64\00:10:19.35 was Hillary Clinton which I thought was admirable of her 00:10:19.38\00:10:22.98 to say it that way. 00:10:23.02\00:10:24.35 And I hope that she is elected president 00:10:24.39\00:10:26.39 but she will put that into action. 00:10:26.42\00:10:28.42 But unfortunately even in this president administration 00:10:28.46\00:10:32.29 there was one period that they elevated gay rights 00:10:32.33\00:10:34.86 above religious rights. 00:10:34.90\00:10:36.23 Do you remember that? 00:10:36.26\00:10:37.60 It was stated as a policy of the state department 00:10:37.63\00:10:41.80 that they would demand that any country agree 00:10:41.84\00:10:44.54 with gay rights in the way it was stated 00:10:44.57\00:10:48.44 you could see that religious liberty was not 00:10:48.48\00:10:51.91 on the back bone but it had lost place to that thing. 00:10:51.95\00:10:55.22 Which will offend ironically the gay rights thing will 00:10:55.25\00:10:57.99 actually offend religious sensibilities 00:10:58.02\00:10:59.75 in many countries. 00:10:59.79\00:11:01.12 Yeah. 00:11:01.16\00:11:02.49 That is one of the challenge 00:11:02.52\00:11:03.86 today in some democratic countries 00:11:03.89\00:11:05.73 and its almost all democratic countries. 00:11:05.76\00:11:08.16 You know the individual rights 00:11:08.20\00:11:10.27 averse the religious freedom rights 00:11:10.30\00:11:13.23 and some times you have to choose 00:11:13.27\00:11:15.20 and its not easy but you know-- 00:11:15.24\00:11:16.91 You're right there is a-- there's a little tension 00:11:16.94\00:11:18.64 at the best of times before in competing rights 00:11:18.67\00:11:20.64 or aspects of rights. 00:11:20.68\00:11:23.24 You know, religious freedom is-- it doesn't mean that 00:11:23.28\00:11:26.05 everything is easier and you solve all the problems. 00:11:26.08\00:11:30.05 Religious freedom like all other freedom 00:11:30.09\00:11:32.75 open the field of tension but it also give us 00:11:32.79\00:11:36.86 and give to the citizen of the country 00:11:36.89\00:11:39.49 the possibility to find a solution 00:11:39.53\00:11:42.66 which is acceptable by people. 00:11:42.70\00:11:45.67 And that is the best way. 00:11:45.70\00:11:47.34 You know first you have to talk with people you have to see 00:11:47.37\00:11:50.11 how we can deal but wave out forgetting 00:11:50.14\00:11:53.41 that religious freedom is a basic human right. 00:11:53.44\00:11:59.55 Whenever we talk about power in our modern age we are inclined 00:11:59.58\00:12:03.62 to think of military force, political power, 00:12:03.65\00:12:08.26 police section all of the civil determinants of power. 00:12:08.29\00:12:12.16 But of course the Bible says the true power comes from God. 00:12:12.19\00:12:17.00 But as God's representatives 00:12:17.03\00:12:19.23 we must deal with these civil powers. 00:12:19.27\00:12:24.21 And it's been the privilege of many of us working 00:12:24.24\00:12:26.11 for religious liberty to interact with the leaders 00:12:26.14\00:12:30.18 and the responsible officials 00:12:30.21\00:12:31.61 in charge of any number of countries. 00:12:31.65\00:12:34.35 We need to realize that in witnessing true power 00:12:34.38\00:12:38.02 speaking about religious freedom 00:12:38.05\00:12:40.82 that we are communicating 00:12:40.86\00:12:42.19 the very principles of the gospel. 00:12:42.22\00:12:45.39 And while they may have the power over us in this world. 00:12:45.43\00:12:50.43 As Paul says, "They exercise the sword not in vain." 00:12:50.47\00:12:54.37 We hope the sword is not directed against us 00:12:54.40\00:12:56.71 but there is a civil power that they exercise. 00:12:56.74\00:12:59.47 But ultimately even these powers must recognize 00:12:59.54\00:13:03.14 the ultimate power and the power 00:13:03.18\00:13:05.88 that is most responsible 00:13:05.91\00:13:08.02 for things in this world is from God 00:13:08.05\00:13:10.25 and it's the principle of His kingdom. 00:13:10.29\00:13:14.19 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:13:14.22\00:13:16.86
