Welcome to the "Liberty Insider." 00:00:22.78\00:00:24.59 This is the program bringing you discussions, news, views, 00:00:24.62\00:00:27.12 up-to-date analysis 00:00:27.16\00:00:28.52 and information on religious liberty. 00:00:28.56\00:00:31.56 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine 00:00:31.59\00:00:34.83 and my guest on this program is Dr. John Graz. 00:00:34.86\00:00:37.73 Welcome, John. 00:00:37.77\00:00:39.10 Pleasure to be with you, Lincoln. 00:00:39.13\00:00:40.47 Always a pleasure to talk, talk again with you. 00:00:40.50\00:00:42.14 We have at times a very close working relationship. 00:00:42.17\00:00:45.44 But to get you in front of the camera 00:00:45.47\00:00:47.81 is often Revelation. 00:00:47.84\00:00:52.85 Just for our viewers you've had 00:00:52.88\00:00:54.75 several positions simultaneously 00:00:54.78\00:00:57.25 but you've been leading out Seventh-day 00:00:57.29\00:00:58.99 Adventist church religious liberty program for 20 years. 00:00:59.02\00:01:02.72 And sadly you're going to move on to I don't know about 00:01:02.76\00:01:06.23 Greener but different pastors more European pastors 00:01:06.26\00:01:09.56 going back to your homeland right? 00:01:09.60\00:01:12.23 Yeah. There's change in the air. 00:01:12.27\00:01:15.37 Not just in your personal situation but, 00:01:15.40\00:01:18.84 you know, if you look around there's all sorts 00:01:18.87\00:01:20.21 of political and social shifts 00:01:20.24\00:01:23.18 and to me one of the most dramatic and historically 00:01:23.21\00:01:27.15 without president events soon to take place before the end 00:01:27.18\00:01:30.62 of 2015 the Pope of Rome, present Pope of Rome, 00:01:30.65\00:01:36.89 Pope Francis has been schedule 00:01:36.93\00:01:39.66 to address the joint house of Congress. 00:01:39.69\00:01:43.16 There's no precedent on that that I can find. 00:01:43.20\00:01:46.13 The nearest was an invitation 00:01:46.17\00:01:49.44 fairly recently for the Dalai Lama 00:01:49.47\00:01:51.34 to address the joint houses of Congress 00:01:51.37\00:01:53.24 and there's such a political firestorm 00:01:53.27\00:01:55.81 that the request was withdrawn. 00:01:55.84\00:01:58.25 In the end they let him have an opening prayer 00:01:58.28\00:02:00.82 which is certainly not that politically significant. 00:02:00.85\00:02:04.39 But what do you make of this? 00:02:04.42\00:02:05.92 Do you see it as a historically significant moment? 00:02:05.95\00:02:10.53 Oh, of course you know I think that you cannot even imagine 00:02:10.56\00:02:15.00 something like that 50 years ago 00:02:15.03\00:02:17.83 and it shows that how the world has changed. 00:02:17.87\00:02:21.17 You know in today it was welcome, you know, 00:02:21.20\00:02:23.94 when the news came people said, "Oh, that's fabulous. 00:02:23.97\00:02:26.78 We'll have a very popular pope speaking and probably 00:02:26.81\00:02:30.21 he will help us to see what is important in the world today." 00:02:30.25\00:02:34.85 It shows so at which point, you know, 00:02:34.88\00:02:38.52 the image of the Pope of Rome 00:02:38.55\00:02:41.82 has become very positively managed. 00:02:41.86\00:02:44.86 What you said is very significant and I picked it up. 00:02:44.89\00:02:47.70 You know he's free to say whatever he wants obviously 00:02:47.73\00:02:50.50 no one's dictating to him. 00:02:50.53\00:02:52.30 But his influence is so great at the moment that he-- 00:02:52.33\00:02:55.20 what he says will set the agenda. 00:02:55.24\00:02:58.37 Whatever he chooses us to share. 00:02:58.41\00:02:59.74 Like the other day he made a comment or issued a document 00:02:59.77\00:03:02.18 on global warming confirming it. 00:03:02.21\00:03:05.08 And I heard the commentators and the scientists exalting. 00:03:05.11\00:03:07.95 I said the one's on this views say we've be pushing this 00:03:07.98\00:03:10.85 for years people haven't noticed. 00:03:10.89\00:03:12.29 Now, the pope's behind it, it will go. 00:03:12.32\00:03:15.62 Why, he's not a scientist? 00:03:15.66\00:03:17.06 You know, which is interesting because what he said 00:03:17.09\00:03:19.39 is most of the time very interesting. 00:03:19.43\00:03:22.00 I should say it is in the right side of human right. 00:03:22.03\00:03:26.43 Oh, it's not necessarily 00:03:26.47\00:03:28.54 anything wrong with these statements. 00:03:28.57\00:03:29.90 It's something that we even don't expect, you know, 00:03:29.94\00:03:31.27 from a leader like the pope. 00:03:31.31\00:03:33.17 He is pushing on the right side, 00:03:33.21\00:03:35.68 he's pushing for more justice for and so on and so on. 00:03:35.71\00:03:38.75 But at the same time it will incur-- increase the influence 00:03:38.78\00:03:43.92 of his institution and what it represents. 00:03:43.95\00:03:47.29 You know, he will become more and more popular 00:03:47.32\00:03:50.56 and that is the other side. 00:03:50.59\00:03:52.53 Historically significant. 00:03:52.56\00:03:54.26 Now, you know with Liberty Magazine I mean, 00:03:54.30\00:03:56.67 this is a discussion that you and I have 00:03:56.70\00:03:58.80 and others on this program about religious liberty issues. 00:03:58.83\00:04:02.90 We can be a little more free willing. 00:04:02.94\00:04:04.91 In the magazine I've got be careful because I can't use 00:04:04.94\00:04:07.44 Liberty Magazine to take potshots at activities 00:04:07.48\00:04:10.91 or beliefs of other, 00:04:10.95\00:04:13.42 other churches only as they affect their attitude 00:04:13.45\00:04:16.89 on religious freedom. 00:04:16.92\00:04:18.25 But the thing that I say all the time about Rome 00:04:18.29\00:04:20.69 which I wish more people understood in the United States 00:04:20.72\00:04:24.66 where we have the First Amendment 00:04:24.69\00:04:26.03 separation of church and state 00:04:26.06\00:04:28.76 the bishop of Rome is inherently 00:04:28.80\00:04:33.03 may be not a threat that's a strong word 00:04:33.07\00:04:34.80 but he's a dissident element because here 00:04:34.84\00:04:37.14 he's the head of a church and the head of a state. 00:04:37.17\00:04:40.34 So for him to be addressing congress in itself 00:04:40.38\00:04:45.28 they can let whoever they want to talk 00:04:45.31\00:04:47.58 but to give him such credence 00:04:47.62\00:04:49.65 is almost profane for the civil state. 00:04:49.68\00:04:53.49 It's dedicated to one end 00:04:53.52\00:04:54.86 and yet they're looking to advice 00:04:54.89\00:04:56.69 from a chameleon system that can flip-flop. 00:04:56.73\00:05:00.96 I think that's very troubling to me. 00:05:01.00\00:05:02.83 I don't know if he is-- and that would be interesting 00:05:02.86\00:05:04.20 to see if all the country will invite him to speak-- 00:05:04.23\00:05:07.14 I don't think so. 00:05:07.17\00:05:08.50 In during the assembly or national assembly 00:05:08.54\00:05:11.57 or Congresses and so on but, you know, 00:05:11.61\00:05:14.04 I think he's invited like a leader of a country 00:05:14.08\00:05:17.31 but it's mainly a moral leader. 00:05:17.35\00:05:19.71 You know someone who has the courage 00:05:19.75\00:05:22.08 to defend correct or right causes. 00:05:22.12\00:05:25.29 And about religious freedom 00:05:25.32\00:05:26.99 I will like to see all the other religious leaders 00:05:27.02\00:05:29.62 be strong as he is defending 00:05:29.66\00:05:32.23 religious freedom especially Christians. 00:05:32.26\00:05:33.60 Well, in that you put your finger 00:05:33.63\00:05:34.96 on part of the problem. 00:05:35.00\00:05:36.33 His rise to dominance might be calculated, you know, 00:05:36.36\00:05:39.37 there's many things to feed that. 00:05:39.40\00:05:41.40 But it also undisclosed what Senator Santorum said 00:05:41.44\00:05:45.04 about Protestants in America. 00:05:45.07\00:05:46.47 He said, "Protestantism is absent." 00:05:46.51\00:05:48.64 We really don't see other religious leaders rising to be 00:05:48.68\00:05:52.65 tarring moral figures and they should or could. 00:05:52.68\00:05:55.48 You see the problem you know, that was the same thing about 00:05:55.52\00:05:58.02 the Supreme Court member you know people say, 00:05:58.05\00:06:01.86 "Look, there are so many Catholics." 00:06:01.89\00:06:03.76 But my question is what about the Protestants? 00:06:03.79\00:06:07.10 Where are they? 00:06:07.13\00:06:08.46 Where are they today in America? 00:06:08.50\00:06:11.57 Also you know-- what you have also to understand is 00:06:11.60\00:06:14.64 in the world today when you have strong united organization 00:06:14.67\00:06:20.18 it gives you many advantages. 00:06:20.21\00:06:22.44 You are more visible. 00:06:22.48\00:06:23.95 But the Protestants are so much divided. 00:06:23.98\00:06:26.01 Nobody represents the Protestants. 00:06:26.05\00:06:28.55 And a part of the Protestants also don't know really 00:06:28.58\00:06:32.35 where they stand today or where are we exactly? 00:06:32.39\00:06:36.09 That's a failure of principle. 00:06:36.12\00:06:38.13 But, you know, and you made a comment I just need 00:06:38.16\00:06:39.79 to follow up with it in case people misunderstand. 00:06:39.83\00:06:42.20 I mean, your comment was fine. 00:06:42.23\00:06:44.03 But you know six out of nine Supreme Court justices 00:06:44.07\00:06:46.84 are Roman Catholic. 00:06:46.87\00:06:48.34 I think that's socially very-- 00:06:48.37\00:06:49.87 sociologically very significant. 00:06:49.90\00:06:52.34 It's not constitutionally problematic whatsoever. 00:06:52.37\00:06:56.21 They have every right to be there 00:06:56.24\00:06:57.68 and the constitution as people don't think about it. 00:06:57.71\00:07:01.32 The only two religious clause-- 00:07:01.35\00:07:03.22 religion clauses in the constitution 00:07:03.25\00:07:04.89 are the half of the First Amendment 00:07:04.92\00:07:07.22 and one other clause that says 00:07:07.26\00:07:08.62 no religious test for public office. 00:07:08.66\00:07:10.99 So in itself it's a vindication 00:07:11.03\00:07:12.96 of the openness of the American system. 00:07:12.99\00:07:15.06 But it does illustrate what is not by chance 00:07:15.10\00:07:19.00 because of disarray among other religious groups 00:07:19.03\00:07:21.77 and by calculated encouragement to catholic involvement 00:07:21.80\00:07:26.34 in politics we see the payoff. 00:07:26.37\00:07:28.48 A very high representation not just on the Supreme Court 00:07:28.51\00:07:31.61 in the House of Representatives too. 00:07:31.65\00:07:33.45 Yeah. Yeah. 00:07:33.48\00:07:34.82 Do you know I agree with that and especially to see 00:07:34.85\00:07:38.05 the state of the Protestant world? 00:07:38.09\00:07:40.36 You know, if you did not have today the evangelicals 00:07:40.39\00:07:44.93 including the Pentecostal 00:07:44.96\00:07:46.39 and so on Protestants will disappear. 00:07:46.43\00:07:49.86 The protestant will disappear as really 00:07:49.90\00:07:52.03 as a force of initiative creativity, you know, 00:07:52.07\00:07:55.67 as a leading force in a matter of civil rights 00:07:55.70\00:07:59.71 and human rights and so on. 00:07:59.74\00:08:01.84 Where are they? Where are they? 00:08:01.88\00:08:03.95 And the evangelicals are also so divided that they disappear 00:08:03.98\00:08:10.12 when it comes to be represented. 00:08:10.15\00:08:12.05 Who will represent them? 00:08:12.09\00:08:13.99 They are growing its true but who is the evangelical voice? 00:08:14.02\00:08:19.83 You know-- And even if they have-- 00:08:19.86\00:08:21.56 And Rome has a strong structure there is one leader. 00:08:21.60\00:08:25.43 But even if they have a voice what are they saying? 00:08:25.47\00:08:27.77 Is it a clear message? Not always. 00:08:27.80\00:08:29.84 Yeah, and also they contradict each other. 00:08:29.87\00:08:31.84 It means we're, you know, 00:08:31.87\00:08:33.81 we are the world has to change again. 00:08:33.84\00:08:36.54 And that's for my point of view I remember once we had meeting 00:08:36.58\00:08:40.35 with all those religious leaders. 00:08:40.38\00:08:42.25 And during a few minutes we were among Protestants 00:08:42.28\00:08:46.55 and some said, "But, you know, the Protestants 00:08:46.59\00:08:49.26 have still something to say, to share in the world today." 00:08:49.29\00:08:52.76 And I said, "Yes, why we should not have the kind of, you know, 00:08:52.79\00:08:57.40 the voice of the Protestants together or some, 00:08:57.43\00:09:00.14 "and I got the reaction, strange reaction from leaders 00:09:00.17\00:09:05.47 saying that but why we should do that. 00:09:05.51\00:09:08.74 And some others say, "We are no longer Protestants." 00:09:08.78\00:09:10.88 They feel the protest is over. Yeah. 00:09:10.91\00:09:12.25 Yeah. Yeah. 00:09:12.28\00:09:13.62 Protestants mean protest we are no longer protesting 00:09:13.65\00:09:15.15 that's a negative word. 00:09:15.18\00:09:16.82 The mind this is the situation. 00:09:16.85\00:09:19.35 It means a totally divided world. 00:09:19.39\00:09:22.49 Powerful, if we put them together 00:09:22.52\00:09:24.49 but they are not able to be together. 00:09:24.53\00:09:26.70 Then you have a voice who represent 00:09:26.73\00:09:28.93 1.2 or 1.3 billion believers and authorities 00:09:28.96\00:09:34.54 and you know when now you are 00:09:34.57\00:09:36.17 working at the government level 00:09:36.20\00:09:38.01 or the media level from one side 00:09:38.04\00:09:40.44 you have a multitude of things 00:09:40.48\00:09:42.74 you don't know what happen, who agree with me-- 00:09:42.78\00:09:44.95 Contradicting views. Contradicting. 00:09:44.98\00:09:46.31 The other side you have a well organized leader, 00:09:46.35\00:09:49.18 religious leader and of course you will ask him, 00:09:49.22\00:09:52.15 what do you think? 00:09:52.19\00:09:53.52 And at the end these leaders would speak for 00:09:53.56\00:09:55.49 all the Christian community 00:09:55.52\00:09:57.73 and may be want there for all the believers. 00:09:57.76\00:09:59.63 Yeah, yeah. 00:09:59.66\00:10:01.00 Now, its-- the dynamic is overwhelming 00:10:01.03\00:10:03.26 and we've seen it happen in before our eyes. 00:10:03.30\00:10:08.60 I'm sure you've been aware and picked up information about 00:10:08.64\00:10:11.97 developing move in Europe. 00:10:12.01\00:10:14.74 That's been discussed at say 00:10:14.78\00:10:16.11 for at least four or five years now 00:10:16.14\00:10:20.12 encouraging civil societies 00:10:20.15\00:10:22.05 toward a family day of rest. 00:10:22.08\00:10:23.85 Yeah? 00:10:23.89\00:10:25.22 Oh, yeah, that would be you know also-- 00:10:25.25\00:10:27.19 May be you know more recently but the last thing I heard 00:10:27.22\00:10:28.96 in Europe it was before the European parliament. 00:10:28.99\00:10:30.96 Did they ever adopt it? 00:10:30.99\00:10:32.33 No, that's still in process and we are following that. 00:10:32.36\00:10:35.46 I have several colleagues there attending meetings and so on. 00:10:35.50\00:10:39.17 You know at the beginning we tend to say 00:10:39.20\00:10:41.00 that it's just little things. 00:10:41.04\00:10:42.84 But now it's, it's becoming more consistent. 00:10:42.87\00:10:46.71 And for my point of view it is a kind of control wall. 00:10:46.74\00:10:53.01 You know in America you have a cont-- still a control wall 00:10:53.05\00:10:55.75 between conservatives and may be 00:10:55.78\00:10:57.75 what we call liberals and so on. 00:10:57.79\00:10:59.82 And you have some issues which are really the point 00:10:59.85\00:11:03.59 where their voice is strong. 00:11:03.63\00:11:05.83 Creation, well say evolution and so on and-- 00:11:05.86\00:11:10.30 Birth control or abortion. 00:11:10.33\00:11:11.67 Yeah, birth controls and many, many points where you know 00:11:11.70\00:11:14.97 you have still the wall. 00:11:15.00\00:11:16.34 In Europe the wall is no longer. 00:11:16.37\00:11:18.77 You know, I should say that conservative's side 00:11:18.81\00:11:21.31 or Christian's side have lost the wall, lost the wall. 00:11:21.34\00:11:25.31 It's a very secularized world. 00:11:25.35\00:11:27.15 But you know Sunday gives a possibility to people to have 00:11:27.18\00:11:30.85 another good issue to say, "Hey, we are here. 00:11:30.89\00:11:33.86 We are still here." Yes. 00:11:33.89\00:11:35.42 I agree with you. 00:11:35.46\00:11:36.86 And its not-- this suggestion which is a law in Germany 00:11:36.89\00:11:41.96 as I remember and Croatia I think 00:11:42.00\00:11:45.20 but not yet for the European community as a whole. 00:11:45.23\00:11:48.24 But it presents itself as purely secular. 00:11:48.27\00:11:50.77 Yeah, purely secular. And it has certain advantages. 00:11:50.81\00:11:53.68 To me it's got the same sort of argument 00:11:53.71\00:11:55.24 in favor like daylight saving. 00:11:55.28\00:11:57.01 There's energy saving. 00:11:57.05\00:11:58.38 There's community resources are saved. 00:11:58.41\00:12:00.98 There's spiritual regeneration of the worker 00:12:01.02\00:12:03.62 and strengthening of the family. 00:12:03.65\00:12:06.35 Spiritual uplift by encouraging people of faith 00:12:06.39\00:12:09.66 to go to Church. 00:12:09.69\00:12:11.03 Doesn't say you have to go to church. 00:12:11.06\00:12:12.73 But put together of course on Sunday which is logical 00:12:12.76\00:12:15.90 but also it is highly charged on a religious basis. 00:12:15.93\00:12:19.70 Because the religions are in favor. 00:12:19.73\00:12:21.64 Yeah. They are pushing it. 00:12:21.67\00:12:23.71 Given that we have a work week and a weekend 00:12:23.74\00:12:26.61 it's not mystery why it settled on Sunday. 00:12:26.64\00:12:28.11 But put together its sort of a thing 00:12:28.14\00:12:30.11 you cant speak against 00:12:30.15\00:12:31.55 or you're sort of against human kind you're against 00:12:31.58\00:12:33.58 the betterment of the society because its rejecting 00:12:33.62\00:12:37.19 the commercialization and so on and in total its-- 00:12:37.22\00:12:42.99 Well, that is something-- 00:12:43.02\00:12:44.36 I think something that I think 00:12:44.39\00:12:45.73 we can't easily say, "I'm against it." 00:12:45.76\00:12:47.43 Yeah, we shall come back to it because that's the point. 00:12:47.46\00:12:50.07 We are running short on time so stay with us 00:12:50.10\00:12:52.47 I want to carry this till we come back 00:12:52.50\00:12:54.90 on this family rest day 00:12:54.94\00:12:57.01 and when we might hear of it again. 00:12:57.04\00:12:58.67
