Welcome to "The Liberty Insider." 00:00:21.75\00:00:24.02 This is the program bringing you news, views, 00:00:24.05\00:00:26.25 discussions, analysis and up-to-date information 00:00:26.29\00:00:29.66 on religious liberty. 00:00:29.69\00:00:31.29 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine, 00:00:31.33\00:00:35.10 and my guest on the program is Dr. John Graz. 00:00:35.13\00:00:37.33 Welcome, John. Pleasure to meet you, Lincoln. 00:00:37.37\00:00:39.73 You're Secretary General of the IRLA 00:00:39.77\00:00:43.27 of the Christian World Communion 00:00:43.30\00:00:45.07 until just recent election 00:00:45.11\00:00:47.61 and you've been Head of the Religious Liberty Department 00:00:47.64\00:00:50.68 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church World Headquarters 00:00:50.71\00:00:52.61 for 20 years. 00:00:52.65\00:00:53.98 Yeah. That's almost a lifetime in itself. 00:00:54.02\00:00:57.29 But you had a long career before that I know. 00:00:57.32\00:01:01.16 We've already had a few programs. 00:01:01.19\00:01:03.96 This is not your first time even to record on this program. 00:01:03.99\00:01:07.20 But we've spoken about many things, 00:01:07.23\00:01:09.26 including how we relate to the government and so on. 00:01:09.30\00:01:11.50 But let's talk a bit about on religious liberty. 00:01:11.53\00:01:14.70 How do we relate to other believers? 00:01:14.74\00:01:18.51 How do we relate to our own members communicating this 00:01:18.54\00:01:21.28 principal and how de we spread that and interact 00:01:21.31\00:01:24.98 with other churches in communicating 00:01:25.01\00:01:27.32 the principles of religious liberty? 00:01:27.35\00:01:29.68 Is it that easy job? 00:01:29.72\00:01:31.39 Do other churches see it the same way automatically? 00:01:31.42\00:01:33.79 Not really, not always but I think we've, 00:01:33.82\00:01:37.69 what happened today around the world where you have 00:01:37.73\00:01:40.40 so many Christians persecuted or even believers persecuted. 00:01:40.43\00:01:45.23 You know, people realized that, that's not a good way you know. 00:01:45.27\00:01:49.77 The best way to live together is really to 00:01:49.80\00:01:52.71 respect other, to accept the concept 00:01:52.74\00:01:55.21 of religious freedom. 00:01:55.24\00:01:56.58 And now as the people are traveling 00:01:56.61\00:01:58.31 from one country to another, 00:01:58.35\00:01:59.88 you cannot just say that this is a Christian country, 00:01:59.91\00:02:02.98 this is the Muslim countries or you will have to fight, 00:02:03.02\00:02:06.55 you know, to preserve one religion, 00:02:06.59\00:02:08.52 and it makes no sense 00:02:08.56\00:02:09.89 because at the end let people decide. 00:02:09.92\00:02:12.83 So you think this is the common solidarity 00:02:12.86\00:02:15.86 of all believers in response to seeing persecution? 00:02:15.90\00:02:18.50 Yeah, we saw that you know, some churches 00:02:18.53\00:02:20.37 had a really poor histories about religious freedom 00:02:20.40\00:02:23.77 but today most of them believe that, yes, you know, 00:02:23.81\00:02:28.28 our members too are persecuted and if we are not happy 00:02:28.31\00:02:32.01 because our members are persecuted, 00:02:32.05\00:02:33.92 we understand that people should be not happy 00:02:33.95\00:02:37.12 because they are member of other organization 00:02:37.15\00:02:39.59 because their member are persecuted too. 00:02:39.62\00:02:41.66 It means we should find a way where everyone could be 00:02:41.69\00:02:46.56 at the end respected for, about their religion. 00:02:46.59\00:02:49.23 I know there is a little downside to this. 00:02:49.26\00:02:54.67 Some religious practices are seen as aberrant 00:02:54.70\00:02:57.84 or offensive by other faiths so they are not easily going 00:02:57.87\00:03:01.68 to want to defend that other viewpoint even if they have 00:03:01.71\00:03:05.01 a general acceptance of religious liberty. 00:03:05.05\00:03:07.65 But we defend, you know, 00:03:07.68\00:03:09.02 we defend, we explain, we defend the principle. 00:03:09.05\00:03:10.39 We do. 00:03:10.42\00:03:11.75 We defend the right for everyone to believe 00:03:11.79\00:03:13.12 even the craziest stuff. 00:03:13.15\00:03:14.49 Yeah, we defend the principle. 00:03:14.52\00:03:15.86 It means sometime also people say that you know, 00:03:15.89\00:03:18.39 religious freedom, there is no limit. 00:03:18.43\00:03:21.13 No there are limit. 00:03:21.16\00:03:22.50 You don't defend people-- Civil law puts limits. 00:03:22.53\00:03:25.30 You can't harm other people, you can't defraud 00:03:25.33\00:03:27.57 other people, you can't harm children. 00:03:27.60\00:03:32.81 You can't rob money from the poor in the name of religion 00:03:32.84\00:03:35.71 or false charities or something. 00:03:35.74\00:03:37.11 There are many limits but they are limits we accept. 00:03:37.15\00:03:39.61 But they are not philosophical limits. 00:03:39.65\00:03:41.68 There are questions of law and order 00:03:41.72\00:03:43.79 and community responsibility. 00:03:43.82\00:03:45.45 But they are fact also that you know, 00:03:45.49\00:03:48.39 you accept the fact that people have 00:03:48.42\00:03:50.36 the right according to their conscience to be informed 00:03:50.39\00:03:55.03 because of course religious freedom means 00:03:55.06\00:03:57.17 you have the right to be informed. 00:03:57.20\00:03:59.33 If you want to make a choice, 00:03:59.37\00:04:00.84 you should have the freedom to receive different option, 00:04:00.87\00:04:03.81 different traditions and so on, 00:04:03.84\00:04:06.34 to know them and not just have one. 00:04:06.37\00:04:09.61 But we have to accept that, that is the best way 00:04:09.64\00:04:13.62 for a country to live at peace you know, this right, 00:04:13.65\00:04:17.75 and this right is given to you but that's normal 00:04:17.79\00:04:20.46 that it's given to the other too. 00:04:20.49\00:04:22.32 Now if you become dangerous, if you say that people 00:04:22.36\00:04:25.76 should be killed, those who don't believe like me 00:04:25.79\00:04:27.73 should be killed and that's another story you know. 00:04:27.76\00:04:30.73 That's not religious freedom. 00:04:30.77\00:04:32.93 Religious freedom is a human right. 00:04:32.97\00:04:34.47 It means you respect human rights 00:04:34.50\00:04:36.57 if you want people respect religious freedom. 00:04:36.60\00:04:39.27 I believe there is too little balancing 00:04:39.31\00:04:40.64 if the rights-- 00:04:40.68\00:04:42.01 There is a balance, you know, 00:04:42.04\00:04:43.38 and also religious freedom means you also have 00:04:43.41\00:04:45.28 to accept tensions. 00:04:45.31\00:04:47.18 It means if you, as you said you know, 00:04:47.22\00:04:49.65 your message is directly opposed 00:04:49.68\00:04:52.12 to the message of another religion, 00:04:52.15\00:04:53.89 which happen all the time, 00:04:53.92\00:04:56.19 you have to create some possibility to avoid, 00:04:56.22\00:04:58.69 to have a war, a religious war. 00:04:58.73\00:05:01.86 It means that except as long as, 00:05:01.90\00:05:04.80 you have the right to think differently, 00:05:04.83\00:05:06.47 you have the right to think that I am wrong, 00:05:06.50\00:05:08.87 you are right, but the limit is you have no right 00:05:08.90\00:05:12.27 to force me to believe what you believe. 00:05:12.31\00:05:15.84 Yeah, there's no question that in religious context 00:05:15.88\00:05:18.98 that sometimes provocations like in Northern Ireland, 00:05:19.01\00:05:22.95 which is highly politically charged. 00:05:22.98\00:05:24.59 It's true. 00:05:24.62\00:05:25.95 But you know the Protestants would make a march 00:05:25.99\00:05:27.42 to the Catholic area. 00:05:27.46\00:05:29.39 They had the right to do that but you know, 00:05:29.42\00:05:31.96 ahead of time you know that religious sensibilities 00:05:31.99\00:05:34.26 are going to be inflamed unnecessarily. 00:05:34.30\00:05:36.33 Exactly, you know, you are right. 00:05:36.36\00:05:38.77 You mentioned that it's the same with the Muslim. 00:05:38.80\00:05:41.64 You know that the Muslim doesn't like you know, 00:05:41.67\00:05:44.07 we, some people mock their tradition 00:05:44.11\00:05:47.78 or the prophet and so on. 00:05:47.81\00:05:50.28 I will defend the right to do it but the question 00:05:50.31\00:05:52.98 I will ask is, is it really necessary? 00:05:53.01\00:05:56.08 Will it help people to live in a better-- 00:05:56.12\00:05:59.12 You would have rational civilized caring people 00:05:59.15\00:06:03.66 would be aware of the sensibility 00:06:03.69\00:06:06.16 and refrain from it. 00:06:06.19\00:06:07.76 But if there is the principle at play, 00:06:07.80\00:06:10.80 you have to defend the Charlie Hebdo that's gonna 00:06:10.83\00:06:15.04 run those s objectionable pictures. 00:06:15.07\00:06:16.60 Yeah, we say that, you know, it's an interesting 00:06:16.64\00:06:18.97 phenomenon of work on this, 00:06:19.01\00:06:20.34 with the pictures of Muhammad and so on. 00:06:20.38\00:06:22.98 Yes, they dislike it. 00:06:23.01\00:06:25.71 Unfortunately, they are right in response 00:06:25.75\00:06:27.35 which sort of undercuts their position. 00:06:27.38\00:06:29.55 But Christians just as offended by sacrilegious 00:06:29.58\00:06:33.02 views of Christianity, 00:06:33.05\00:06:34.39 but the response is a little different. 00:06:34.42\00:06:36.66 So maybe there's an educational process 00:06:36.69\00:06:39.26 that should be put to work here. 00:06:39.29\00:06:40.93 But sometime you know, Christian reacted, 00:06:40.96\00:06:42.90 I remember, a long time ago, Christian put bomb 00:06:42.93\00:06:46.47 in a movie theatre or they attack 00:06:46.50\00:06:50.11 the clinics and so on. 00:06:50.14\00:06:51.47 That's a really minority fact, 00:06:51.51\00:06:53.81 that's not like what happened today with Islam. 00:06:53.84\00:06:56.85 But still, you know, you have to ask the question, 00:06:56.88\00:07:00.18 I have the right to do that but now if I do that, 00:07:00.22\00:07:03.72 this is what will happen. 00:07:03.75\00:07:05.42 Is it really necessary to do that? 00:07:05.55\00:07:08.69 What kind of provocation I have to do, 00:07:08.72\00:07:12.39 to help or will it help or not. 00:07:12.43\00:07:15.06 And that is the way that believer have to think. 00:07:15.10\00:07:17.93 You know, you publish your comics-- 00:07:17.97\00:07:21.34 Well, didn't Paul speak to this a lot theologically? 00:07:21.37\00:07:23.81 He wasn't talking about this. 00:07:23.84\00:07:25.17 He says, you know, "All things are legal 00:07:25.21\00:07:28.71 but not all things are profitable." 00:07:28.74\00:07:30.15 Yeah, exactly. 00:07:30.18\00:07:31.51 You know, being, I mean, people, 00:07:31.55\00:07:33.15 Christian people killed in some part of Africa 00:07:33.18\00:07:37.19 because in Paris they publish comic about 00:07:37.22\00:07:41.59 prophet of a religion. 00:07:41.62\00:07:43.22 Is it really necessary to do that? 00:07:43.26\00:07:45.66 Unfortunately, yes. 00:07:45.69\00:07:48.40 There's a cause and effect but other times 00:07:48.43\00:07:51.33 things don't actually happen but the story is told, 00:07:51.37\00:07:53.64 a made up story. 00:07:53.67\00:07:55.00 Remember, England nearly lost India ahead of time 00:07:55.04\00:07:58.51 when the rumors spread that there was pig's grease 00:07:58.54\00:08:02.08 in the bullet, the cartridge casings 00:08:02.11\00:08:04.81 but there wasn't. 00:08:04.85\00:08:07.72 As I remember, it was actually a lamb, 00:08:07.75\00:08:09.52 lamb's fat but that false story 00:08:09.55\00:08:12.35 lead to a huge religious backlash. 00:08:12.39\00:08:15.26 And we're back to where we were in other programs. 00:08:15.29\00:08:17.16 Part of what we're doing on religious liberty I think is 00:08:17.19\00:08:19.29 to communicate accurate information about 00:08:19.33\00:08:21.76 our faith and faith practice. 00:08:21.80\00:08:23.13 This is also a point you know, 00:08:23.16\00:08:24.80 you need to have a good information, 00:08:24.83\00:08:26.84 the real information and before you know, reacting, 00:08:26.87\00:08:30.87 you have to be sure that the information 00:08:30.91\00:08:32.94 you've got are correct and also to have relation with people. 00:08:32.97\00:08:38.08 As I mentioned sometime you know, in Norway, 00:08:38.11\00:08:41.98 when this happened you know, in Europe 00:08:42.02\00:08:44.02 with the provocation about the Prophet of Islam you know, 00:08:44.05\00:08:47.49 in Norway, they had a regular meeting with Muslim, 00:08:47.52\00:08:52.19 Jews and other religion and when it happened you know, 00:08:52.23\00:08:55.73 they had a meeting together and they said we should 00:08:55.76\00:08:58.27 do some thing because we don't want to see 00:08:58.30\00:09:01.07 a church burn or mosque burn in our country. 00:09:01.10\00:09:03.74 And they did and they went to the frontline 00:09:03.77\00:09:07.31 and they explained that they live together, 00:09:07.34\00:09:09.44 they live at peace and they don't follow 00:09:09.48\00:09:11.21 the way of other and it worked. 00:09:11.25\00:09:13.85 It worked. It worked. 00:09:13.88\00:09:15.32 It means there are something to do. 00:09:15.35\00:09:18.05 Yeah, um, so where do we go with this topic then? 00:09:18.09\00:09:23.79 What was your suggestion? 00:09:23.83\00:09:25.36 No, what I want also to say that you know, 00:09:25.39\00:09:27.50 don't believe because you have a religion 00:09:27.53\00:09:30.50 or because people are religious leader 00:09:30.53\00:09:32.60 then they will be in favor of religious freedom you know. 00:09:32.63\00:09:36.47 Not all religious leaders 00:09:36.50\00:09:39.57 are in favor of religious freedom. 00:09:39.61\00:09:41.58 There are many ways you know, 00:09:41.61\00:09:42.94 I remember a very nice meeting we had in Middle East 00:09:42.98\00:09:46.95 and we asked the question about 00:09:46.98\00:09:48.72 the conversion to an imam, a very nice man. 00:09:48.75\00:09:52.15 You wouldn't find any imam that's keen on conversion. 00:09:52.19\00:09:54.62 He smiled and said, "But you know these people 00:09:54.66\00:09:57.73 who changed their religion, they are not serious. 00:09:57.76\00:10:00.83 They are not serious." 00:10:00.86\00:10:02.20 Of course for him how you can change the religion 00:10:02.23\00:10:05.27 when you have the true religion. 00:10:05.30\00:10:06.87 It makes no sense. 00:10:06.90\00:10:08.24 And in many religion people think like that. 00:10:08.27\00:10:11.04 You know, they believe that those who change religion 00:10:11.07\00:10:13.14 have another interest. 00:10:13.17\00:10:14.84 They probably receive some money. 00:10:14.88\00:10:16.34 Or the worst they've been deceived. 00:10:16.38\00:10:17.71 Yes, enticed or deceived. 00:10:17.75\00:10:19.11 This is what happened 00:10:19.15\00:10:20.48 in Sri Lanka, in Myanmar, you know, in Sri Lanka, 00:10:20.52\00:10:22.32 they accused Christian to buy you know, 00:10:22.35\00:10:26.35 conversion and that's interesting. 00:10:26.39\00:10:28.42 And these things have happened on occasions. 00:10:28.46\00:10:30.73 They are not without substance 00:10:30.76\00:10:32.09 but they're anymore today, they are not really 00:10:32.13\00:10:34.60 the fuller explanation by any means. 00:10:34.63\00:10:36.46 Yeah, you know a religion can attract people. 00:10:36.50\00:10:39.33 Look at in some part of India where you have 00:10:39.37\00:10:42.00 a lot of poor people and you come 00:10:42.04\00:10:44.21 and you build schools and of course, 00:10:44.24\00:10:47.31 you open the school to the poor and of course 00:10:47.34\00:10:49.88 the poor in their religion are excluded 00:10:49.91\00:10:53.85 from even from the temple. 00:10:53.88\00:10:55.25 You open the school, you open the churches. 00:10:55.28\00:10:58.89 You will say to them you are children of God, 00:10:58.92\00:11:01.89 all of you and of course it attracts. 00:11:01.92\00:11:04.59 But this has been the factor in India 00:11:04.63\00:11:06.76 with the untouchables and Hinduism, 00:11:06.80\00:11:11.03 they were at great disadvantage but joining Christianity, 00:11:11.07\00:11:13.67 it's a social step up the ladder. 00:11:13.70\00:11:16.77 But you know, I think that people don't believe, 00:11:16.81\00:11:19.51 belong to religion. 00:11:19.54\00:11:21.01 No religion can say that these people belong to me 00:11:21.04\00:11:24.65 or these people living in these territories-- 00:11:24.68\00:11:26.01 No, no religion should say that. 00:11:26.05\00:11:27.38 Some religions do say that. 00:11:27.42\00:11:29.38 But we should not you know. 00:11:29.42\00:11:30.75 Yeah, you're right. 00:11:30.79\00:11:32.12 And this backs, back to the United Nations document, 00:11:32.15\00:11:34.22 the Declaration. 00:11:34.26\00:11:35.59 Exactly. I mean, that's exactly what it says. 00:11:35.62\00:11:36.96 You are a sovereign individual. 00:11:36.99\00:11:38.33 You have the right to inherent into yourself. 00:11:38.36\00:11:40.53 The community shouldn't determinate it for you. 00:11:40.56\00:11:42.26 You are creation from God. 00:11:42.30\00:11:44.87 God did not create a block of people. 00:11:44.90\00:11:47.00 He created one individual after the other. 00:11:47.04\00:11:50.57 It means it makes a difference but that's a way 00:11:50.61\00:11:52.87 of thinking and I think that when you don't respect 00:11:52.91\00:11:56.61 the fact that individual has a right to choose, 00:11:56.64\00:12:00.75 you don't respect religious freedom, 00:12:00.78\00:12:02.78 you don't respect human right. 00:12:02.82\00:12:04.42 Yeah, and we've made great progress 00:12:04.45\00:12:06.92 in the modern era on that 00:12:06.96\00:12:08.29 but I do believe with the rise of ISLE 00:12:08.32\00:12:10.83 or ISIS and the religious antagonisms, 00:12:10.86\00:12:14.73 particularly in the Middle East, 00:12:14.76\00:12:16.33 that understanding of the individual human integrity 00:12:16.36\00:12:20.04 is drifting away. 00:12:20.07\00:12:21.40 I really do think so. 00:12:21.44\00:12:22.77 Even in the West, as a counterpoint 00:12:22.80\00:12:24.41 to what we see there, we sort of closing ranks 00:12:24.44\00:12:27.21 and becoming more inflexible about religious activity 00:12:27.24\00:12:30.85 that's beyond our norm. 00:12:30.88\00:12:32.51 Yeah. 00:12:32.55\00:12:33.92 So it's going to be a difficult era. 00:12:33.95\00:12:36.55 Uh, let's take a break now. 00:12:36.58\00:12:37.92 I'll come back with Dr. John Graz 00:12:37.95\00:12:39.65 to continue this discussion. 00:12:39.69\00:12:41.16
