Welcome to the Liberty Insider, this is the program 00:00:22.15\00:00:26.02 and I hope you have been following it regularly 00:00:26.05\00:00:27.52 that brings in news, views, discussion, 00:00:27.56\00:00:29.92 up-to-date information, 00:00:29.96\00:00:31.29 and analysis of religious liberty events 00:00:31.33\00:00:34.00 in our world today. 00:00:34.03\00:00:36.03 And my name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine 00:00:36.06\00:00:39.37 and my guest on the program Dr. John Graz. 00:00:39.40\00:00:42.20 Pleasure to be with you. 00:00:42.24\00:00:43.57 Man of many titles and many skills. 00:00:43.61\00:00:45.94 Thank you. I will just pick one. 00:00:45.97\00:00:47.31 You have been head of the Religious Liberty Department 00:00:47.34\00:00:49.08 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church for, 00:00:49.11\00:00:50.75 at the headquarters for 20 years now. 00:00:50.78\00:00:52.48 Yeah. 00:00:52.51\00:00:55.15 When I think back on church's history 00:00:55.18\00:00:56.99 and the principles 00:00:57.02\00:00:58.45 of religious liberty by extension, 00:00:58.49\00:01:01.09 it's significant that 00:01:01.12\00:01:03.73 there was a lot of persecution of early Christians, 00:01:03.76\00:01:06.83 but the turning point, both good and bad, 00:01:06.86\00:01:08.96 was when the government endorsed and supported 00:01:09.00\00:01:12.50 and protected religion by Constantine. 00:01:12.53\00:01:16.07 And yet theologically you can trace 00:01:16.10\00:01:17.97 a lot of the troubles from that point. 00:01:18.01\00:01:19.34 Yeah. 00:01:19.37\00:01:20.71 But it was very important for the early Christians to, 00:01:20.74\00:01:25.35 change from being a persecuted minority to being, 00:01:25.38\00:01:29.05 to having good relations with the government 00:01:29.08\00:01:30.85 where they were supported. 00:01:30.89\00:01:32.35 Is that still important today, you think? 00:01:32.39\00:01:34.36 No, I think you cannot ignore the government. 00:01:34.39\00:01:38.26 You know, you are part of the community 00:01:38.29\00:01:40.20 and the government is part of the community. 00:01:40.23\00:01:42.63 That's not really our philosophy to be isolated. 00:01:42.66\00:01:46.87 We want to be part of the community. 00:01:46.90\00:01:48.50 We want to help the community. 00:01:48.54\00:01:50.51 We want to be a plus for the community. 00:01:50.54\00:01:53.51 You know, and there are so many ways to do that. 00:01:53.54\00:01:55.84 Just when I went to Peru, a few weeks ago. 00:01:55.88\00:01:59.58 I was associate to a big event, 00:01:59.61\00:02:01.65 you know, young people, thousands of young people, 00:02:01.68\00:02:04.55 planted 40,000 tress in the city of Lima, 00:02:04.59\00:02:08.19 and in the city of Salvador. 00:02:08.22\00:02:09.72 Then how are they gonna grow in Lima? 00:02:09.76\00:02:11.16 I have been in Lima. 00:02:11.19\00:02:12.53 They claim, no, yes. 00:02:12.56\00:02:15.46 In Lima they claim that it never rains, never. 00:02:15.50\00:02:18.47 Lima never rain? 00:02:18.50\00:02:19.83 Yeah, that you have to put some water. 00:02:19.87\00:02:21.40 Yeah exactly never. 00:02:21.44\00:02:22.77 So I hope you've got to follow up watering through. 00:02:22.80\00:02:24.41 Yeah. Yeah. 00:02:24.44\00:02:25.77 Exactly, and this is what happened also in Villa, 00:02:25.81\00:02:28.68 as Villa EI Salvador, but that was-- 00:02:28.71\00:02:30.98 you know it means that we are part of the community, 00:02:31.01\00:02:33.01 we want to do something... 00:02:33.05\00:02:34.38 Oh, great positives. 00:02:34.42\00:02:35.75 When we organize the meeting on religious freedom, 00:02:35.78\00:02:37.12 it's part of the community, 00:02:37.15\00:02:38.49 we want to involve the community, 00:02:38.52\00:02:39.85 we want to involve those who represent the community 00:02:39.89\00:02:43.39 because, you know, government normally represent people. 00:02:43.43\00:02:46.63 Now I set you up a bit at the beginning 00:02:46.66\00:02:48.26 and you didn't quite answer to the imputation I was making. 00:02:48.30\00:02:54.30 With Constantine, the problem was not 00:02:54.34\00:02:56.24 that he protected and supported Christians, 00:02:56.27\00:02:58.87 the problem was that he entered 00:02:58.91\00:03:00.24 into theological fields 00:03:00.28\00:03:01.88 and dictated what sort of orthodoxy was acceptable. 00:03:01.91\00:03:04.78 Yeah and also it become... 00:03:04.81\00:03:06.35 And we are not encouraging that with leaders. 00:03:06.38\00:03:07.72 You know, I think the problem-- 00:03:07.75\00:03:09.08 the problem comes when you have the question of power. 00:03:09.12\00:03:13.42 You know, why politician and government 00:03:13.46\00:03:15.76 are interested in religion. 00:03:15.79\00:03:17.19 It's just a question of power. 00:03:17.23\00:03:19.09 You know, Constantine, it's a very interesting story 00:03:19.13\00:03:22.86 because Constantine, you know, came at the time 00:03:22.90\00:03:25.10 when Christian were persecuted, 00:03:25.13\00:03:26.70 terribly persecuted during 10 years 00:03:26.74\00:03:29.14 and Constantine come and he said that, 00:03:29.17\00:03:32.17 "I want to give freedom to Christian. 00:03:32.21\00:03:33.74 But not only Christian, to all people. 00:03:33.78\00:03:36.31 Stop persecuting people for their religion." 00:03:36.34\00:03:39.68 That was a fabulous thing. 00:03:39.71\00:03:41.05 Can you imagine the story of the Roman Empire, 00:03:41.08\00:03:43.65 if he had stopped there. 00:03:43.69\00:03:45.65 But the problem is, of course when you are in a power, 00:03:45.69\00:03:49.02 you need allies and Christian became his allies. 00:03:49.06\00:03:54.06 And he needed them and they needed him. 00:03:54.10\00:03:56.67 And they've made a kind of deal. 00:03:56.70\00:03:58.83 And he threw in his luck with them. 00:03:58.87\00:04:00.20 And of course the church was divided 00:04:00.24\00:04:01.57 and Constantine said that 00:04:01.60\00:04:03.07 I don't want to have a divided church 00:04:03.10\00:04:04.67 because if you are divided, 00:04:04.71\00:04:06.04 what about my power? 00:04:06.07\00:04:07.41 And people forget. 00:04:07.44\00:04:08.78 In fact, I had a dispute with one of our authors over this 00:04:08.81\00:04:12.25 that people forget that right out of the gate, 00:04:12.28\00:04:14.65 Constantine persecuted at lower level persecution 00:04:14.68\00:04:18.45 than his forbearers 00:04:18.49\00:04:19.82 because once he had given his authority 00:04:19.85\00:04:23.02 to the church leadership 00:04:23.06\00:04:24.63 and then called a council 00:04:24.66\00:04:26.03 where they chose the correct books, 00:04:26.06\00:04:28.80 then he is the power of the state to persecute 00:04:28.83\00:04:31.10 those who were using the wrong books. 00:04:31.13\00:04:32.47 Disagree. Yeah, of course. 00:04:32.50\00:04:33.84 And used the power of the state to destroy the wrong books. 00:04:33.87\00:04:37.31 Yeah, that was, you know, 00:04:37.34\00:04:39.57 you had a moment, a fabulous moment 00:04:39.61\00:04:41.58 and after you had a kind of corruption. 00:04:41.61\00:04:44.05 And also, you know, that's always, 00:04:44.08\00:04:46.38 you need to have 00:04:46.41\00:04:47.75 a good relation with the government, 00:04:47.78\00:04:49.12 but always be careful, the government can corrupt you 00:04:49.15\00:04:52.75 because it's a matter of power. 00:04:52.79\00:04:54.26 You can corrupt the government too 00:04:54.29\00:04:56.22 and the government can corrupt you. 00:04:56.26\00:04:57.83 Because, you know, 00:04:57.86\00:04:59.19 a Constantine gave a lot of privileges to the bishops 00:04:59.23\00:05:02.00 because the bishops were everywhere 00:05:02.03\00:05:04.40 and if you had some one of influence 00:05:04.43\00:05:06.27 in every city of the empire-- 00:05:06.30\00:05:07.80 He wanted to use those 00:05:07.84\00:05:09.17 as exhibitories of the government. 00:05:09.20\00:05:10.54 That gives the fabulous power to you. 00:05:10.57\00:05:11.91 Yeah. 00:05:11.94\00:05:13.27 This happened in many places, you know, I think about Russia, 00:05:13.31\00:05:16.51 where the church were persecuted. 00:05:16.54\00:05:18.31 Now, you know, the relation with the church 00:05:18.35\00:05:20.18 and the state are very good. 00:05:20.22\00:05:22.65 It could be good, it could be, we have to be very careful. 00:05:22.68\00:05:26.02 And the same, then now you are church 00:05:26.05\00:05:28.36 and you have a good relation with the government, 00:05:28.39\00:05:30.53 but as a church or as a religious organization, 00:05:30.56\00:05:33.93 you have also decadents. 00:05:33.96\00:05:35.50 You have people who disagree with you. 00:05:35.53\00:05:36.87 Yeah. 00:05:36.90\00:05:38.23 And if you have a good connection 00:05:38.27\00:05:39.60 with the government, you know, 00:05:39.63\00:05:40.97 that is very simple, it's natural. 00:05:41.00\00:05:42.70 The government said, "What can you do for us?" 00:05:42.74\00:05:45.17 And you say, "What can you do for us?" 00:05:45.21\00:05:47.48 Now we have a deal. 00:05:47.51\00:05:48.84 I think it is unavoidable 00:05:48.88\00:05:50.21 when it's particularly in a democracy, 00:05:50.25\00:05:51.58 when-- as we do, you make a representation 00:05:51.61\00:05:56.32 to the government from our view, to explain ourselves, 00:05:56.35\00:05:59.55 their interest is heightened as they see 00:05:59.59\00:06:02.36 your numbers representing voters or constituency 00:06:02.39\00:06:06.16 that's unavoidable. 00:06:06.19\00:06:07.53 But I think we need to-- you understand it fully, 00:06:07.56\00:06:11.27 we need to avoid this cross pollination. 00:06:11.30\00:06:13.80 Yeah, we are, you know... 00:06:13.84\00:06:15.17 Where we perhaps might allow the state, 00:06:15.20\00:06:18.01 as Constantine did to act partially towards religion 00:06:18.04\00:06:23.48 and we ourselves shouldn't think 00:06:23.51\00:06:25.05 political powers end in itself, 00:06:25.08\00:06:26.75 the church is never helped by that. 00:06:26.78\00:06:28.15 You know, as Adventists we are in minority everywhere. 00:06:28.18\00:06:31.05 But there are some interesting country. 00:06:31.09\00:06:32.79 We had a festival of religious freedom 00:06:32.82\00:06:34.56 in Jamaica. 00:06:34.59\00:06:35.92 Very well organized by... 00:06:35.96\00:06:37.29 Very high percentage's of 00:06:37.33\00:06:38.66 Seventh-day Adventist in Jamaica. 00:06:38.69\00:06:40.03 Nigel Coke, you know, he did a good work. 00:06:40.06\00:06:41.40 We met the head of state, who is an Adventist, 00:06:41.43\00:06:44.07 the senate president who is an Adventist, 00:06:44.10\00:06:45.97 we had, we met several leaders. 00:06:46.00\00:06:47.40 But that was interesting 00:06:47.44\00:06:48.77 'cause the leader of the opposition 00:06:48.80\00:06:50.14 is also an Adventist or his family are Adventist. 00:06:50.17\00:06:55.04 It means you have-- Adventists are on both sides 00:06:55.08\00:06:58.05 and that is healthy ways, 00:06:58.08\00:07:00.08 you know, the government cannot say, 00:07:00.12\00:07:02.08 "Oh, you are voting in block form." 00:07:02.12\00:07:03.95 I mean for what? 00:07:03.99\00:07:05.32 But I have the example, 00:07:05.35\00:07:06.72 of although some of the churches around the world 00:07:06.76\00:07:09.19 where I saw that, 00:07:09.22\00:07:10.56 where the leader of the church said, 00:07:10.59\00:07:13.16 "We vote for this political party." 00:07:13.19\00:07:15.60 And when the political party get the government, 00:07:15.63\00:07:18.60 they receive a lot of privileges. 00:07:18.63\00:07:20.70 And you can see a lot of building and so on. 00:07:20.74\00:07:23.20 That is not healthy. That is a corruption. 00:07:23.24\00:07:26.37 And I think that we have to be very clear. 00:07:26.41\00:07:28.68 This is why having good relation 00:07:28.71\00:07:30.71 with the government, 00:07:30.75\00:07:32.18 it's something we have to do, you know. 00:07:32.21\00:07:34.38 But be careful, good relation doesn't mean 00:07:34.42\00:07:37.35 that you sell your soul to someone else. 00:07:37.39\00:07:40.82 You keep, you know, the mission you have, 00:07:40.86\00:07:43.36 you have a responsibility, 00:07:43.39\00:07:44.73 you represent the kingdom of God, 00:07:44.76\00:07:46.29 you represent the values of God. 00:07:46.33\00:07:48.33 You don't want to seal it, to sell it. 00:07:48.36\00:07:50.23 And yet I think from the Bible, in one case, 00:07:50.27\00:07:52.50 I think we probably, if the occasion warrants 00:07:52.53\00:07:54.97 we might wonder over each. 00:07:55.00\00:07:56.47 Remember it wasn't the group that said to Paul, 00:07:56.50\00:07:58.37 you know, "You want to make a Christian." 00:07:58.41\00:08:01.81 I think it was Felix or... 00:08:01.84\00:08:03.18 Or Felix, it's either Felix 00:08:03.21\00:08:04.55 or a group of one of his representatives. 00:08:04.58\00:08:05.95 Yeah, yeah. 00:08:05.98\00:08:07.72 I would hope that as we represent religious liberty 00:08:07.75\00:08:10.72 and a Seventh-day Adventist promoting that, 00:08:10.75\00:08:14.42 while we are not seeking favoritism from the government 00:08:14.46\00:08:17.33 but we should be missionary minded about it. 00:08:17.36\00:08:19.26 It's not just an abstract 00:08:19.29\00:08:21.93 civil construct versus religious activity. 00:08:21.96\00:08:24.73 But to come back to the Christian 00:08:24.77\00:08:27.37 after being persecuted during three centuries, 00:08:27.40\00:08:30.17 you know, when you live in the countries 00:08:30.21\00:08:32.24 where people look at you, 00:08:32.27\00:08:34.08 what is your religion and they look down at you 00:08:34.11\00:08:37.08 and you see that because your religion, 00:08:37.11\00:08:40.78 you will be excluded, exterminate-- 00:08:40.82\00:08:43.92 not exterminate that would be the worst. 00:08:43.95\00:08:45.85 Sometimes. 00:08:45.89\00:08:47.22 Discriminate-- sometimes it's true. 00:08:47.26\00:08:48.72 But discriminated. 00:08:48.76\00:08:50.23 You have no right, you know, to do any-- 00:08:50.26\00:08:52.76 even to think because of your religion. 00:08:52.79\00:08:54.80 And of course and suddenly you have someone 00:08:54.83\00:08:56.56 who came and say, 00:08:56.60\00:08:57.93 I accept the difference, I accept you. 00:08:57.97\00:09:01.14 The temptation to make a deal is very important 00:09:01.17\00:09:03.91 but at least you know, 00:09:03.94\00:09:05.44 I think there are some limit 00:09:05.47\00:09:06.81 where as believer, citizen of the kingdom of the God, 00:09:06.84\00:09:11.78 we say no. 00:09:11.81\00:09:13.15 That's the limit on my values, you know, I cannot-- 00:09:13.18\00:09:16.38 This is why Christian 00:09:16.42\00:09:17.75 who are too much involved in politics, 00:09:17.79\00:09:19.85 may lose the vision of the kingdom of God. 00:09:19.89\00:09:23.02 I think so. 00:09:23.06\00:09:24.39 We are first citizen of the kingdom of God, 00:09:24.43\00:09:25.89 and governments needs people like us 00:09:25.93\00:09:28.86 to say this is the correct way, 00:09:28.90\00:09:31.20 we don't want to interfere in the politic business and so on. 00:09:31.23\00:09:34.57 But in term of values, this is the correct way. 00:09:34.60\00:09:37.87 Well, we are witnessing 00:09:37.91\00:09:39.24 the government as well as to the society... 00:09:39.27\00:09:41.34 And... 00:09:41.38\00:09:42.84 Can you explain to me, exactly how it works? 00:09:42.88\00:09:47.65 You had an associate whose primary charter is to be 00:09:47.68\00:09:52.65 a liaison mostly with the US Congress. 00:09:52.69\00:09:56.12 US Congress and the White House and Soviet Union. 00:09:56.16\00:09:57.96 Yeah, how does that function? 00:09:57.99\00:10:00.40 Or how would you discriminate 00:10:00.43\00:10:02.70 or differentiate that from lobbying. 00:10:02.73\00:10:06.63 Yeah, that's-- that's a good question. 00:10:06.67\00:10:08.44 I think that he-- first, 00:10:08.47\00:10:10.11 you know, he has to represent a church. 00:10:10.14\00:10:11.94 Our associate they represent the church. 00:10:11.97\00:10:14.34 It means, he have the feeling 00:10:14.38\00:10:16.85 that he is an ambassador 00:10:16.88\00:10:19.71 or the ambassador of a church. 00:10:19.75\00:10:21.08 And everywhere in every meeting, 00:10:21.12\00:10:22.45 he has to be in harmony with the church. 00:10:22.48\00:10:25.12 He receive the order, I should say the influence 00:10:25.15\00:10:28.69 and the guidance from the church, 00:10:28.72\00:10:31.19 not from the government. 00:10:31.23\00:10:32.99 And of course, if imagine an associate 00:10:33.03\00:10:35.06 is not doing these work correctly, 00:10:35.10\00:10:38.23 we have to say sorry 00:10:38.27\00:10:39.60 but you have to correct your way. 00:10:39.63\00:10:42.40 That's... 00:10:42.44\00:10:43.77 Yeah, well that could be. 00:10:43.81\00:10:45.14 But I don't think we've had 00:10:45.17\00:10:46.51 a charter in over a longer period of time. 00:10:46.54\00:10:47.88 So it's not really 00:10:47.91\00:10:50.71 too depended on the individual 00:10:50.75\00:10:52.38 what is our aim in having somebody there. 00:10:52.41\00:10:55.65 Yeah, our aim, you know, first is to know 00:10:55.68\00:10:57.55 what's going on there and especially in Washington. 00:10:57.59\00:11:00.29 You know, we believed that one day, 00:11:00.32\00:11:02.86 the Sunday law will be imposed, you will have a persecution. 00:11:02.89\00:11:05.76 We believe that America 00:11:05.79\00:11:07.13 will play a very important role in the last days. 00:11:07.16\00:11:09.86 It means we have to be there 00:11:09.90\00:11:11.23 and to give the right information. 00:11:11.27\00:11:12.60 So it's to inform ourselves 00:11:12.63\00:11:13.97 about what's happening with government. 00:11:14.00\00:11:15.34 To inform our self about what's going on 00:11:15.37\00:11:16.71 and not to let rumors spreading every day and so on. 00:11:16.74\00:11:21.14 And secondly also to inform the authority about ourselves. 00:11:21.18\00:11:25.01 The authorities has to know who we hire. 00:11:25.05\00:11:28.22 It's not, you know, people in charge of the power, 00:11:28.25\00:11:31.15 they have decision to take, they are under the pressure, 00:11:31.19\00:11:34.26 they manipulate to, 00:11:34.29\00:11:35.79 they're under the pressure of the media, 00:11:35.82\00:11:37.39 they are under the pressure of people. 00:11:37.43\00:11:39.43 They need to know, who really, what kind of group is it? 00:11:39.46\00:11:43.03 What kind of religion is it? 00:11:43.06\00:11:44.73 If nobody is here, 00:11:44.77\00:11:46.10 this is why we start this campaign of church ambassador. 00:11:46.13\00:11:49.14 If our seat is empty, close to the... 00:11:49.17\00:11:52.74 Someone else will speak for us. 00:11:52.77\00:11:54.31 Someone else will speak and that's the point. 00:11:54.34\00:11:57.61 If they want to persecute people, okay, 00:11:57.65\00:12:00.72 but they have to know really what kind of people are there. 00:12:00.75\00:12:03.18 But a lot of persecution does arise from an ignorance 00:12:03.22\00:12:05.89 or lack of knowledge about what someone stands for. 00:12:05.92\00:12:09.96 Some, it depends... 00:12:09.99\00:12:11.33 At the end of the day, some of the difference are insoluble 00:12:11.36\00:12:14.56 because we do have doctrinal differences 00:12:14.60\00:12:16.83 say with the Roman Catholic Church. 00:12:16.87\00:12:19.33 But you know that might 00:12:19.37\00:12:20.70 create its own complications in certain scenarios. 00:12:20.74\00:12:24.04 But to marginalize or to have some legal penalties 00:12:24.07\00:12:28.71 within even a free country because they think 00:12:28.74\00:12:32.08 that Seventh-day Adventists are a total sect 00:12:32.11\00:12:34.38 to sort of like Jones town group. 00:12:34.42\00:12:36.42 That would be the worst and that could happen. 00:12:36.45\00:12:38.09 Yeah, that could happen 00:12:38.12\00:12:39.45 All it would take would be one advisor of a ruler 00:12:39.49\00:12:42.59 who has a skewed view and in the absence 00:12:42.62\00:12:44.89 of the accurate information that would carry. 00:12:44.93\00:12:47.13 Yeah, may be we could come back on this idea, 00:12:47.16\00:12:49.30 that's a good, you know, 00:12:49.33\00:12:50.97 what is really at the origin of the persecution. 00:12:51.00\00:12:53.77 Yes. Well, we will have to comeback. 00:12:53.80\00:12:56.00 Take a break now. 00:12:56.04\00:12:57.37 So stay with us and we will continue 00:12:57.41\00:12:58.94 this discussion with Dr. John Graz. 00:12:58.97\00:13:00.68
