Welcome back to the Liberty Insider 00:00:02.80\00:00:04.41 before the break with guest Dr. John Graz. 00:00:04.44\00:00:06.67 We were talking about 00:00:06.70\00:00:08.71 the global situation on religious liberty, 00:00:08.74\00:00:10.76 trends and directions and some particular examples. 00:00:10.79\00:00:15.37 What's another country that you want to, 00:00:15.40\00:00:17.03 we talk a little bit about communist support. 00:00:17.06\00:00:18.49 Oh, we can talk about all the country 00:00:18.52\00:00:20.32 where you don't have religious freedom. 00:00:20.35\00:00:21.38 You know, the Arab Spring sprang rather badly 00:00:21.41\00:00:25.79 when all was over but is there any good news 00:00:25.82\00:00:28.92 among those countries? 00:00:28.95\00:00:30.02 Yeah, that is something that we from the beginning, 00:00:30.05\00:00:32.77 you know, we said that to be careful 00:00:32.80\00:00:34.76 you know, what will happen after all? 00:00:34.79\00:00:37.32 That's good, they need freedom 00:00:37.35\00:00:39.00 and so on that's good that people demonstrate saying that 00:00:39.03\00:00:41.41 we need freedom. 00:00:41.44\00:00:43.18 I agree, you know, people need freedom. 00:00:43.21\00:00:45.10 We cannot live if we don't have freedom 00:00:45.13\00:00:47.16 but who is behind and what will happen 00:00:47.19\00:00:49.85 and what would happen. 00:00:49.88\00:00:51.18 And we see today what happened. 00:00:51.21\00:00:53.30 Except one country and we have always 00:00:53.33\00:00:55.38 to mention that Tunisia 00:00:55.41\00:00:57.74 you know, the first country where the Arab Spring started. 00:00:57.77\00:01:02.61 And now its Tunisia is the only country 00:01:02.64\00:01:05.22 where in the constitution, the new constitution, 00:01:05.25\00:01:08.22 you have the right of freedom of conscience 00:01:08.25\00:01:10.65 and for the moments you know the-- 00:01:10.68\00:01:12.38 And it's a majority Islamic society, isn't it? 00:01:12.41\00:01:16.17 Yeah, but the government is longer Islamic 00:01:16.20\00:01:18.66 but the Islamic are very strong 00:01:18.69\00:01:20.02 and even the leader of the Islamic party celebrate 00:01:20.05\00:01:24.39 the democratic system even if they lost the election. 00:01:24.42\00:01:28.35 It means they have still some hope 00:01:28.38\00:01:30.95 but when of course when you look 00:01:30.98\00:01:32.37 to the other country is just the opposite, 00:01:32.40\00:01:35.16 and unfortunately we have to say 00:01:35.19\00:01:37.03 when in term of persecution 00:01:37.06\00:01:39.39 you know, you have the military regime 00:01:39.42\00:01:42.72 in Egypt protect better the Christian 00:01:42.75\00:01:45.49 than the previous one elected by people. 00:01:45.52\00:01:48.87 And what happened now in Syria? 00:01:48.90\00:01:51.50 What happened in Iraq? 00:01:51.53\00:01:52.91 And Iraq you remember we talked that about Iraq. 00:01:52.94\00:01:55.96 We said that a Christian minority 00:01:55.99\00:01:58.15 will be in very difficult situation 00:01:58.18\00:02:00.73 and this what happened today. 00:02:00.76\00:02:02.35 You know, you had in Syria and in Iraq million Christians. 00:02:02.38\00:02:06.37 No, it's just-- 00:02:06.40\00:02:07.54 Over one million just in Iraq. 00:02:07.57\00:02:08.72 Yeah just now, you know they're 00:02:08.75\00:02:10.36 Maybe a little 00:02:10.39\00:02:12.43 and they want to leave and they leave. 00:02:12.46\00:02:13.87 It means Christianity will disappear from-- 00:02:13.90\00:02:17.72 One of the shocking things in recent months to me 00:02:17.75\00:02:19.86 was to read and you can see 00:02:19.89\00:02:21.48 pictures and videos of the treatment of Christians 00:02:21.51\00:02:24.09 in what was that city? 00:02:24.12\00:02:26.64 The second-- Isis-- 00:02:26.67\00:02:28.39 But when Isis took over 00:02:28.42\00:02:29.51 the second largest city in Iraq, 00:02:29.54\00:02:33.02 I don't know how many Christians were there 00:02:33.05\00:02:35.31 but were at least a couple of hundred thousand 00:02:35.34\00:02:37.26 in the country at that point so at a guess 00:02:37.29\00:02:39.50 there must have been something like 50,000 00:02:39.53\00:02:41.41 some tens of thousands of Christians 00:02:41.44\00:02:43.08 not one left, not one left. 00:02:43.11\00:02:45.00 And those who were caught you know, they were persecuted. 00:02:45.03\00:02:48.14 It means they're not just discriminated. 00:02:48.17\00:02:50.61 I remember when-- 00:02:50.64\00:02:51.67 Some were crucified either. 00:02:51.70\00:02:52.86 You know, I start my ministry 00:02:52.89\00:02:54.24 of religious freedom at the world level. 00:02:54.27\00:02:56.34 We talk about discrimination, 00:02:56.37\00:02:58.10 time to time people being arrested 00:02:58.13\00:03:00.87 that was really the big issue 00:03:00.90\00:03:02.45 you know, discrimination of Christian 00:03:02.48\00:03:04.85 or non Christian religious minorities. 00:03:04.88\00:03:07.72 Today you know, the worst is people are crucified, 00:03:07.75\00:03:11.27 they have beheaded, and just because 00:03:11.30\00:03:13.35 they don't have the right religion. 00:03:13.38\00:03:15.11 You know remember what happened 00:03:15.14\00:03:16.74 in northern Kenya where you know the-- 00:03:16.77\00:03:20.53 Boko Haram-- 00:03:20.56\00:03:21.71 Yeah, Boko, I think Al-Shabaab or a group from Somalia. 00:03:21.74\00:03:24.98 Associated group. 00:03:25.01\00:03:26.06 Yeah, came from Somalia 00:03:26.09\00:03:27.86 you know, they invested a university 00:03:27.89\00:03:30.60 and they asked whole student to recite the prayer. 00:03:30.63\00:03:34.67 To recite the prayer yeah. 00:03:34.70\00:03:36.81 Those who did not know how to do that 00:03:36.84\00:03:38.55 they were just killed at once. 00:03:38.58\00:03:41.14 That means you know, you have to go back far 00:03:41.17\00:03:44.64 in history to see things like that 00:03:44.67\00:03:47.31 and this is what we-- 00:03:47.34\00:03:49.51 Unfortunately we can find that in the Old Testament, 00:03:49.54\00:03:51.63 you remember there was that period 00:03:51.66\00:03:52.71 where they asked the-- 00:03:52.74\00:03:54.51 the Israelites ask this group to pronounce a certain word. 00:03:54.54\00:03:57.94 If they couldn't say it. 00:03:57.97\00:04:00.13 But that's a barbarism 00:04:00.16\00:04:01.84 and we thought of another time, isn't it? 00:04:01.87\00:04:03.49 Yeah, exactly and we thought that 00:04:03.52\00:04:05.04 it will never come back again 00:04:05.07\00:04:06.59 and it is what we have to face today. 00:04:06.62\00:04:09.84 And it's not just in a little city 00:04:09.87\00:04:12.36 in a little village you know, it's a more and more and more 00:04:12.39\00:04:15.89 and more country. 00:04:15.92\00:04:16.95 Like you know, you have more and more country 00:04:16.98\00:04:19.79 applying the sharia as the law of their country 00:04:19.82\00:04:23.50 or even if their sharia has a good thing 00:04:23.53\00:04:26.14 but then also two thing 00:04:26.17\00:04:27.34 which really create the problem for the religious freedom, 00:04:27.37\00:04:30.23 many other but two are the most important. 00:04:30.26\00:04:33.02 One is the law on apostasy. 00:04:33.05\00:04:35.81 It means if you change your religion 00:04:35.84\00:04:38.28 you're punished, sentence to death. 00:04:38.31\00:04:40.44 By civil well, yes. 00:04:40.47\00:04:41.59 In the civil court that's exercising religious power. 00:04:41.62\00:04:43.96 It means you become really 00:04:43.99\00:04:45.39 it's really you cannot follow your conscience. 00:04:45.42\00:04:48.19 You can be executed if you do that. 00:04:48.22\00:04:51.16 Secondly the law on blasphemy. 00:04:51.19\00:04:53.32 The law on blasphemy create a pressure, 00:04:53.35\00:04:57.26 a high level of discrimination on religious minorities. 00:04:57.29\00:05:01.60 Proof required is minimum, just an accusation. 00:05:01.63\00:05:04.74 And it has to come from someone 00:05:04.77\00:05:06.04 who has the same religion as the-- 00:05:06.07\00:05:08.45 Remember there was the case, I'm trying to think-- 00:05:08.48\00:05:10.64 Asia Bibi. You remember Asia Bibi-- 00:05:10.67\00:05:12.85 Yes, but there was a case-- 00:05:12.88\00:05:13.94 She's still in prison. 00:05:13.97\00:05:15.00 It was the case of this imam 00:05:15.03\00:05:18.16 that made a charge against this woman 00:05:18.19\00:05:20.81 and she was stoned and killed and then it turned out 00:05:20.84\00:05:24.75 that the imam was trying to cover up 00:05:24.78\00:05:27.01 for his personal immorality. 00:05:27.04\00:05:28.71 Oh, there are many cases like that 00:05:28.74\00:05:31.20 where people are arrested and we know one, 00:05:31.23\00:05:34.56 we try to help him 00:05:34.59\00:05:36.22 but he still in prison totally innocent 00:05:36.25\00:05:39.09 but have been accused. 00:05:39.12\00:05:40.15 When you are accused you have no way. 00:05:40.18\00:05:43.61 If you're a member of a religious minority, 00:05:43.64\00:05:46.73 there's no way to defend you. 00:05:46.76\00:05:48.92 They will arrest you also to protect you 00:05:48.95\00:05:51.67 because crazy people fanatics will kill you. 00:05:51.70\00:05:54.85 But of course the issue was sharia, 00:05:54.88\00:05:56.22 it's not just that innocent people get killed, 00:05:56.25\00:05:58.77 guilty people get killed. 00:05:58.80\00:06:00.35 Look, where there's a law 00:06:00.38\00:06:02.21 against defamation of religion say or blasphemy. 00:06:02.24\00:06:06.32 Yes, by being a Christian and just saying certain things 00:06:06.35\00:06:09.12 that's taken as a blasphemy against Islam. 00:06:09.15\00:06:11.34 Absolutely. 00:06:11.37\00:06:12.40 Which it might be on their criteria 00:06:12.43\00:06:13.92 but why should any modern society 00:06:13.95\00:06:16.12 be able to exercise even a death penalty 00:06:16.15\00:06:18.43 against someone for such a minor 00:06:18.46\00:06:20.90 offence that comes with their religious status automatically. 00:06:20.93\00:06:23.91 So they're "guilty" 00:06:23.94\00:06:26.81 but it's still a great injustice. 00:06:26.84\00:06:28.55 Yeah, you are-- anyway in some part of world 00:06:28.58\00:06:30.80 you are guilty just to be there 00:06:30.83\00:06:32.93 and when it has been your country for thousand years 00:06:32.96\00:06:36.65 you know, that's a tragedy. 00:06:36.68\00:06:38.34 Suddenly you know, people say 00:06:38.37\00:06:40.14 you have nothing to do in your own country. 00:06:40.17\00:06:42.56 Why? 00:06:42.59\00:06:43.71 Because your religion, you have one possibility 00:06:43.74\00:06:46.53 if you change your religion we will welcome you. 00:06:46.56\00:06:49.60 If you keep your religion, 00:06:49.63\00:06:51.78 we kill you or you have to leave. 00:06:51.81\00:06:54.33 And you know which is interesting to see 00:06:54.36\00:06:56.81 unfortunately is the reaction in some other country. 00:06:56.84\00:06:59.96 Like now the Buddhist react 00:06:59.99\00:07:01.57 against these extreme in some religion 00:07:01.60\00:07:05.27 and the Buddhist went to impose Buddhism 00:07:05.30\00:07:08.13 in some countries like Sri Lanka and Myanmar 00:07:08.16\00:07:11.59 and they also attack extremist Buddhist 00:07:11.62\00:07:14.64 attack Muslim to kill Muslim or Christians. 00:07:14.67\00:07:17.63 It does seem we're in a period 00:07:17.66\00:07:19.47 of ratcheting up of religious tensions and prerogatives, 00:07:19.50\00:07:24.63 don't you think? 00:07:24.66\00:07:25.70 Like what is historically we always thought that 00:07:25.73\00:07:28.36 they were rather indifferent to other belief. 00:07:28.39\00:07:31.92 They are most of the country they are, 00:07:31.95\00:07:34.14 but they also, they can become criminal too. 00:07:34.17\00:07:36.58 They can kill people, kill all the people. 00:07:36.61\00:07:38.72 But also, you know, what we have to understand is 00:07:38.75\00:07:41.80 when you have these 00:07:41.83\00:07:43.40 extremist religious fanaticism violent in one side, 00:07:43.43\00:07:48.51 you feed another religious fanaticism in other side. 00:07:48.54\00:07:52.98 And I think that one day we will a religious fanatic, 00:07:53.01\00:07:56.06 Christian religious fanatics also doing things, 00:07:56.09\00:07:58.99 really bad things and we don't know 00:07:59.02\00:08:00.92 where we are going if we don't do anything. 00:08:00.95\00:08:02.80 So what's the answer you were thinking about 00:08:02.83\00:08:05.97 heading this direction but I'm reminded 00:08:06.00\00:08:07.47 of Christopher Hitchens' book. 00:08:07.50\00:08:10.88 He had a title that I don't want to repeat 00:08:10.91\00:08:12.51 but he subtitled was 00:08:12.54\00:08:14.00 how religion poisons everything. 00:08:14.03\00:08:16.28 Yeah. 00:08:16.31\00:08:17.40 Is religion you could-- you could come 00:08:17.43\00:08:19.42 to a simplistic conclusion like you say, 00:08:19.45\00:08:21.97 one extremist breeds another 00:08:22.00\00:08:23.49 and one religious violence leads to another. 00:08:23.52\00:08:25.80 Would the answer be to remove religion 00:08:25.83\00:08:27.63 from the equation? 00:08:27.66\00:08:28.69 But you know, we tried to do that 00:08:28.72\00:08:30.86 the 20th century is not a religious century 00:08:30.89\00:08:34.36 and what happened? 00:08:34.39\00:08:35.43 You have communism, you have Nazism, fascism, 00:08:35.46\00:08:39.79 and you have a lot of people 00:08:39.82\00:08:41.02 who are killed during this time. 00:08:41.05\00:08:42.74 And you have also the extremist people 00:08:42.77\00:08:45.34 in ideology you know, that was not about religion 00:08:45.37\00:08:48.16 that was about ideology. 00:08:48.19\00:08:49.71 I think the problem is a human nature. 00:08:49.74\00:08:51.85 It's not the religion itself. 00:08:51.88\00:08:53.06 And religion is such a powerful force that 00:08:53.09\00:08:54.87 it perhaps magnifies the tendency to human nature. 00:08:54.90\00:08:57.96 Of course you have people knowing how to use 00:08:57.99\00:09:00.33 and how manipulate people on behalf of religion. 00:09:00.36\00:09:03.67 It has always existed. 00:09:03.70\00:09:05.26 Think about the crusade 00:09:05.29\00:09:06.43 you know, these poor people coming from France, 00:09:06.46\00:09:09.05 coming from England going walking to Jerusalem 00:09:09.08\00:09:12.92 you know, for nothing 00:09:12.95\00:09:14.87 and that's the power of religion. 00:09:14.90\00:09:17.44 And of course when someone can manipulate people 00:09:17.47\00:09:20.48 using religion, he become like you know, half God. 00:09:20.51\00:09:25.14 Now, we're gonna see a little bit of that-- 00:09:25.17\00:09:27.75 this period of another US presidential election 00:09:27.78\00:09:30.46 and depending on when this program is shown 00:09:30.49\00:09:32.61 will be perhaps right at the middle of it. 00:09:32.64\00:09:35.10 It's fairly benign in the western country like 00:09:35.13\00:09:37.18 the United States but religion is one of the-- 00:09:37.21\00:09:40.06 the triggers of human behavior 00:09:40.09\00:09:42.89 and politicians use it big time. 00:09:42.92\00:09:44.09 Religion could be the most beautiful things in the world 00:09:44.12\00:09:47.35 because you have so many good thing done 00:09:47.38\00:09:49.78 on behalf of religion. 00:09:49.81\00:09:52.11 Look if suddenly where the people decide that 00:09:52.14\00:09:55.16 every religious institutions around the world 00:09:55.19\00:09:58.63 should close their door, 00:09:58.66\00:10:00.68 that would be a tragedy for the world. 00:10:00.71\00:10:02.71 How many hospitals, schools, orphanages 00:10:02.74\00:10:06.92 and nursing home would be close? 00:10:06.95\00:10:09.21 And I think the human spirit 00:10:09.24\00:10:10.40 what sort of shrinking on itself. 00:10:10.43\00:10:11.88 Absolutely. 00:10:11.91\00:10:12.98 A new secular Dark Age. 00:10:13.01\00:10:14.63 Exactly but you have the other side too 00:10:14.66\00:10:17.41 and it has always existed in the history of Christianity 00:10:17.44\00:10:20.28 who have the fanaticst, fanaticism 00:10:20.31\00:10:22.55 which is the human nature or which express 00:10:22.58\00:10:25.69 you know, in such a away that 00:10:25.72\00:10:27.53 they exclu-- in a exclusivity, 00:10:27.56\00:10:30.60 they don't want to live with the people. 00:10:30.63\00:10:33.10 They don't accept the difference. 00:10:33.13\00:10:34.76 I know you understand it but for our viewers 00:10:34.79\00:10:37.95 I need to explain fanaticism is often 00:10:37.98\00:10:41.49 defined by the person making the charge. 00:10:41.52\00:10:44.10 Now someone that's serious about 00:10:44.13\00:10:46.47 their faith can easily be accused of being a fanatic. 00:10:46.50\00:10:48.42 Yeah, absolutely. 00:10:48.45\00:10:49.48 So I think it's better to say religion 00:10:49.51\00:10:51.58 within the constraints of not being violent and all the rest. 00:10:51.61\00:10:55.39 They can be as fanatical as they want, 00:10:55.42\00:10:57.38 but they have no right to inhibit someone else. 00:10:57.41\00:11:00.63 Yeah, yeah, because we are, 00:11:00.66\00:11:01.86 you know, people can accuse you of fanaticism, 00:11:01.89\00:11:03.93 I talk about those-- 00:11:03.96\00:11:04.99 I might be a fanatic to them, but not to myself. 00:11:05.02\00:11:06.67 Yeah, exactly. 00:11:06.70\00:11:07.79 But I talked about those who use violence 00:11:07.82\00:11:10.60 to impose their point of view. 00:11:10.63\00:11:11.71 Yes, absolutely and we do live in an era 00:11:11.74\00:11:13.80 where violence is gratuitously used against religious 00:11:13.83\00:11:17.35 or even the secular others, isn't it? 00:11:17.38\00:11:19.26 Yeah, you know the world where we are living today 00:11:19.29\00:11:22.29 is not really the ideal one 00:11:22.32\00:11:24.60 and sometime people ask question about religion. 00:11:24.63\00:11:27.55 Is it religion necessary? 00:11:27.58\00:11:29.26 Yes, I meant in religion bring hope 00:11:29.29\00:11:32.76 but you know something which is very important 00:11:32.79\00:11:34.77 for everyone is to accept that 00:11:34.80\00:11:37.78 people have the right to choose their religion. 00:11:37.81\00:11:40.31 Even to have no religion, 00:11:40.34\00:11:41.65 if they don't want to have no religion 00:11:41.68\00:11:44.17 we have to respect this right because this right it's a gift 00:11:44.20\00:11:48.09 and this gift comes from God. 00:11:48.12\00:11:50.44 This is what we call religious freedom 00:11:50.47\00:11:52.96 and this is why I believe really, 00:11:52.99\00:11:54.85 religious freedom is not maybe the only answer 00:11:54.88\00:11:57.56 but it's probably the main answer to the problem 00:11:57.59\00:12:01.03 we can see in the world today 00:12:01.06\00:12:02.75 in term of relation between religion and people. 00:12:02.78\00:12:09.68 I would say it's impossible for anybody to say that 00:12:09.71\00:12:13.08 religious liberty is not a frontline 00:12:13.11\00:12:15.47 headline issue today. 00:12:15.50\00:12:17.66 After seeing what happened in Mosul 00:12:17.69\00:12:19.95 with the takeover of the Islamic State 00:12:19.98\00:12:22.93 of Iraq and the Levant. 00:12:22.96\00:12:25.18 It's obvious that persecution religious liberty 00:12:25.21\00:12:28.86 in the negative is a headline issue. 00:12:28.89\00:12:32.10 In a city that had tens of thousands 00:12:32.13\00:12:34.98 of Christians in a country 00:12:35.01\00:12:36.55 that once had one million Christians 00:12:36.58\00:12:38.87 and to know that today 00:12:38.90\00:12:40.34 there is not one Christians left in Mosul, 00:12:40.37\00:12:43.64 after they had been crucified, beheaded 00:12:43.67\00:12:46.42 and chased out of town on pain of their life. 00:12:46.45\00:12:49.24 And it lost of all of their funds. 00:12:49.27\00:12:51.42 It's obvious the persecution 00:12:51.45\00:12:54.72 is so widespread not only in the Middle East 00:12:54.75\00:12:57.29 but all around the world that religion 00:12:57.32\00:12:59.97 and the right to practice one's faith 00:13:00.00\00:13:02.56 is being challenged as never before. 00:13:02.59\00:13:05.60 That means to me that the proclamation 00:13:05.63\00:13:08.07 of true religious liberty, the freedom from everyone, 00:13:08.10\00:13:11.73 for everyone to practice their faith untroubled 00:13:11.76\00:13:15.47 or to be faithless as they wish. 00:13:15.50\00:13:18.22 This must be guaranteed in our day. 00:13:18.25\00:13:21.80 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:13:21.83\00:13:26.15
