Twelve years. 00:00:58.91\00:01:00.82 And for the International 00:01:00.85\00:01:02.42 Religious Liberty Association for 20 years. 00:01:02.45\00:01:05.11 Yeah. 00:01:05.14\00:01:06.17 So not just a lot of hats, a lot of traveling 00:01:06.20\00:01:09.73 and I've done a little bit with you-- 00:01:09.76\00:01:11.21 Done a lot of event and a lot of blessing too. 00:01:11.24\00:01:15.61 Yeah. 00:01:15.64\00:01:17.07 But the world has been your oyster as they say 00:01:17.10\00:01:19.95 on religious liberty and I know 00:01:19.98\00:01:21.64 you've even the last few weeks 00:01:21.67\00:01:23.33 you've been quite a few places down Latin America. 00:01:23.36\00:01:26.00 Oh, yes, that was my last tour maybe we will talk again, 00:01:26.03\00:01:29.37 but that was a fabulous tour in several countries 00:01:29.40\00:01:32.76 in North America-- North Africa. 00:01:32.79\00:01:34.70 Oh, no, sorry South I mean-- Yes. 00:01:34.73\00:01:37.04 You know, I mixed. 00:01:37.07\00:01:38.64 Now I could remember back in the '90s 00:01:38.67\00:01:41.21 when the Soviet Union collapsed, 00:01:41.24\00:01:43.13 George Bush Senior was bragging 00:01:43.16\00:01:46.40 and exalting about how democracy is breaking out 00:01:46.43\00:01:49.46 all over with religious liberty? 00:01:49.49\00:01:52.07 Do you think religious liberty is breaking out all over 00:01:52.10\00:01:54.83 or is it a mixed bag at best? 00:01:54.86\00:01:57.29 Although I would like to share this vision, you know, 00:01:57.32\00:01:59.83 but you know, it was, I remember when I start 00:01:59.86\00:02:02.77 in 1995 we were really full of hope. 00:02:02.80\00:02:06.42 You know, the communist world collapsed 00:02:06.45\00:02:08.47 and you had more and more freedom, 00:02:08.50\00:02:10.69 religious freedom in eastern part of Europe 00:02:10.72\00:02:14.40 and also in Russia. 00:02:14.43\00:02:15.68 Yeah, because under communism there 00:02:15.71\00:02:17.12 had been quite severe restrictions. 00:02:17.15\00:02:19.08 Absolutely, yeah, less than it was 60 years ago 00:02:19.11\00:02:23.78 about that was still very difficult. 00:02:23.81\00:02:26.39 But you know, we thought that everything will be possible. 00:02:26.42\00:02:28.62 You remember, you know, we even the Adventist church 00:02:28.65\00:02:31.59 organized evangelistic campaign in Moscow 00:02:31.62\00:02:34.87 in Kremlin and so and that was-- 00:02:34.90\00:02:36.73 And many people did come in. 00:02:36.76\00:02:38.57 Many people and that was really people 00:02:38.60\00:02:40.41 who have very interested about religion 00:02:40.44\00:02:42.76 but unfortunately I remember their way back, 00:02:42.79\00:02:46.62 you know, started in 1998 00:02:46.65\00:02:49.38 when we had the world conference in-- 00:02:49.41\00:02:52.40 that was in New Delhi 00:02:52.43\00:02:54.04 and good delegation came from Russia. 00:02:54.07\00:02:56.86 And they said, you know, we see now 00:02:56.89\00:02:59.42 that there are some reaction that would be very difficult 00:02:59.45\00:03:02.79 to keep the freedom we have. 00:03:02.82\00:03:04.25 In 1993 you know, reaction again send, 00:03:04.28\00:03:07.19 we were very close to a new law in 00:03:07.22\00:03:11.09 1998, 1999, 2003 00:03:11.12\00:03:15.32 then after 2003 you know, 00:03:15.35\00:03:17.58 we had restriction after restriction 00:03:17.61\00:03:20.86 after restriction 00:03:20.89\00:03:22.56 in the state of religious freedom. 00:03:22.59\00:03:24.22 Tell me unless I've got it wrong, 00:03:24.25\00:03:25.61 it seems to me there were two phases 00:03:25.64\00:03:27.46 post to communism. 00:03:27.49\00:03:29.04 The first was a sort of a reaction 00:03:29.07\00:03:31.24 to foreign religious influence 00:03:31.27\00:03:33.22 and then it got more particular. 00:03:33.25\00:03:35.31 It was a protective mechanism 00:03:35.34\00:03:37.82 because these an orthodox church 00:03:37.85\00:03:39.32 that reassume its role and it's the state religion 00:03:39.35\00:03:42.55 and they try to exclude. 00:03:42.58\00:03:44.23 Absolutely, you have the role of the main church there. 00:03:44.26\00:03:47.64 You know, they were persecuted 00:03:47.67\00:03:49.32 and suddenly they have freedom 00:03:49.35\00:03:51.49 and of course in their I.D, 00:03:51.52\00:03:53.29 you know, they were the Christian. 00:03:53.32\00:03:54.37 They are in this part of the world 00:03:54.40\00:03:56.01 and other Christians from other countries 00:03:56.04\00:03:58.60 should have helped them and not to come 00:03:58.63\00:04:01.16 and try to build their own church. 00:04:01.19\00:04:03.00 And they were very disappointed 00:04:03.03\00:04:04.36 when they see so many Christian coming 00:04:04.39\00:04:06.49 and trying to build their own organization, 00:04:06.52\00:04:08.80 their own church without even sometime pay tribute to them 00:04:08.83\00:04:12.70 and recognize what they did in the past. 00:04:12.73\00:04:16.73 And of course they reacted and they-- 00:04:16.76\00:04:20.71 And that continued till the present day, hasn't isn't? 00:04:20.74\00:04:22.63 And they reacted 00:04:22.66\00:04:24.00 and they became more and more influent 00:04:24.03\00:04:26.35 and now they're very, very, close to the power. 00:04:26.38\00:04:29.38 And they are able to really to control 00:04:29.41\00:04:31.60 of the religious life 00:04:31.63\00:04:33.13 or the religious world in their country. 00:04:33.16\00:04:35.70 I saw something on YouTube the other day from the Ukraine. 00:04:35.73\00:04:40.58 There was some Seventh-day Adventist 00:04:40.61\00:04:42.53 having a little booth at a county fare 00:04:42.56\00:04:45.07 with some books on it. 00:04:45.10\00:04:46.50 And here comes the precession 00:04:46.53\00:04:47.96 lead by the Eastern Orthodox priest 00:04:47.99\00:04:50.06 waving his censer enough and they descended on, 00:04:50.09\00:04:52.94 one of the priest overturns the books 00:04:52.97\00:04:54.74 and then it turns sort of nasty. 00:04:54.77\00:04:56.51 It did happen several years, several years ago 00:04:56.54\00:04:58.75 not just few weeks ago but that's true you know, 00:04:58.78\00:05:03.34 it gives an idea about the situation there. 00:05:03.37\00:05:06.74 Religious minorities are not persecuted 00:05:06.77\00:05:09.28 as they were in the past but they're limited you know, 00:05:09.31\00:05:12.19 their freedom are limited. 00:05:12.22\00:05:13.49 They are under severe restriction. 00:05:13.52\00:05:15.52 They cannot preach openly. 00:05:15.55\00:05:17.98 They have to do that in their own church, 00:05:18.01\00:05:20.89 that's difficult for them to built new churches and so on. 00:05:20.92\00:05:24.29 But even with what you've today, 00:05:24.32\00:05:27.24 it's not exactly the same that what happened you know, 00:05:27.27\00:05:30.86 50, 60, 70 years ago during the communist time 00:05:30.89\00:05:34.75 where the state control totally the religious life. 00:05:34.78\00:05:38.34 But it's a different sort of restriction 00:05:38.37\00:05:39.87 but neither one is ideal, is it? 00:05:39.90\00:05:41.66 No. 00:05:41.69\00:05:42.75 And, you know the principle that all people 00:05:42.78\00:05:46.90 and all religions have to be free to upright 00:05:46.93\00:05:48.92 for they truly believe in religious freedom. 00:05:48.95\00:05:51.04 Just because one group has 00:05:51.07\00:05:52.83 freedom and privilege for their faith, 00:05:52.86\00:05:55.30 it's not really good in the overall picture. 00:05:55.33\00:05:57.39 Which is interesting in Russia and talk-- 00:05:57.42\00:06:00.12 if you want to talk about the Adventist church 00:06:00.15\00:06:02.75 they had always had good relation, 00:06:02.78\00:06:05.26 at least relation with their government. 00:06:05.29\00:06:07.27 It has probably saved them of being 00:06:07.30\00:06:09.61 totally persecuted even now. 00:06:09.64\00:06:11.87 They are recognized by the government. 00:06:11.90\00:06:14.35 They have relations with the main church. 00:06:14.38\00:06:17.68 They are member of the Congress of 00:06:17.71\00:06:20.08 Religious Organization. 00:06:20.11\00:06:21.77 It means we maintain really a regular relations 00:06:21.80\00:06:25.81 and communications with the main church 00:06:25.84\00:06:28.71 and with the government. 00:06:28.74\00:06:30.47 Of course it doesn't mean 00:06:30.50\00:06:32.32 we don't have restriction like others 00:06:32.35\00:06:35.32 but still, you know, there are some space of freedom 00:06:35.35\00:06:39.67 and we cannot compare with what happened. 00:06:39.70\00:06:41.89 And we can always hope for further improvement. 00:06:41.92\00:06:44.17 Also something interesting. 00:06:44.20\00:06:45.78 You know, few years ago, 00:06:45.81\00:06:48.27 not few years during the time of the communist system, 00:06:48.30\00:06:52.46 Russia was an atheist country and persecute religious people. 00:06:52.49\00:06:57.34 But today, you know, the president of Russia is, 00:06:57.37\00:07:00.79 has become the defender of Christians around the world. 00:07:00.82\00:07:04.51 The defender of persecuted Christians. 00:07:04.54\00:07:07.28 I think he's the only leaders of the western countries 00:07:07.31\00:07:12.00 to say publicly that Christian should not be persecuted. 00:07:12.03\00:07:15.99 They have to be defended. 00:07:16.02\00:07:17.72 What a change. It's incredible. 00:07:17.75\00:07:19.08 That's wonderful. Yeah. 00:07:19.11\00:07:20.40 Of course, there is a political background 00:07:20.43\00:07:24.12 and so on but that's interesting to see 00:07:24.15\00:07:26.39 that in 60 years, 70 years you know, 00:07:26.42\00:07:29.56 a country can change. 00:07:29.59\00:07:30.93 Certainly the veneer of communism 00:07:30.96\00:07:34.07 is peeled away pretty quickly in Russia and that is good. 00:07:34.10\00:07:37.57 Although it does make me think of the Crimean War 00:07:37.60\00:07:40.31 where Russia, it all started with issues 00:07:40.34\00:07:44.30 in the holy land under the Ottoman Turks 00:07:44.33\00:07:47.64 and Russia wanted to be the champions 00:07:47.67\00:07:49.61 and protectors of Orthodox Christians. 00:07:49.64\00:07:52.52 England wanted to be the champion 00:07:52.55\00:07:53.81 and protector of Protestants. 00:07:53.84\00:07:55.34 France wanted to be the champion 00:07:55.37\00:07:56.72 and protector of Catholics 00:07:56.75\00:07:59.91 and the end result was they all fought each other 00:07:59.94\00:08:02.98 in the biggest war before World War I. 00:08:03.01\00:08:06.20 But it is good and I hadn't even realized 00:08:06.23\00:08:08.36 that Vladimir Putin has been so vocal 00:08:08.39\00:08:11.53 in defending Christian's rights. 00:08:11.56\00:08:13.81 The Orthodox Church too of course. 00:08:13.84\00:08:15.46 I'm sure his emphasis is strongly-- 00:08:15.49\00:08:18.01 Yeah, because you know, of course you have also 00:08:18.04\00:08:20.25 a lot of Orthodox in countries where persecution 00:08:20.28\00:08:23.52 is really very, very hard today. 00:08:23.55\00:08:25.90 And coming back to your question. 00:08:25.93\00:08:28.18 No, unfortunately the world is not better than it was 00:08:28.21\00:08:31.34 in the past about religious freedom. 00:08:31.37\00:08:33.24 I have to say it is even worse than it was in the past. 00:08:33.27\00:08:39.07 Yeah, well, we often quote, 00:08:39.10\00:08:41.35 I know you do too that pew forum study of recent years. 00:08:41.38\00:08:44.45 Yeah. 00:08:44.48\00:08:45.53 70-75% of the world's population 00:08:45.56\00:08:49.13 exists under regimes where there is 00:08:49.16\00:08:51.92 severe restrictions of religious liberty. 00:08:51.95\00:08:53.83 And about you know according to the US Commission 00:08:53.86\00:08:57.60 for Religious Freedom 00:08:57.63\00:08:58.66 and also the department of state 00:08:58.69\00:09:00.32 about 19 countries are really 00:09:00.35\00:09:04.16 not respecting religious freedom. 00:09:04.19\00:09:05.86 But in fact it's more than that. 00:09:05.89\00:09:07.56 When you see the list they put or they set up 00:09:07.59\00:09:11.25 that you can see that several countries are missing 00:09:11.28\00:09:15.25 and there are more than-- 00:09:15.28\00:09:16.97 I should say about 40 countries, 00:09:17.00\00:09:19.23 in about 40 countries around the world. 00:09:19.26\00:09:21.57 You have severe restriction of religious freedom 00:09:21.60\00:09:24.85 but in some countries it's really, 00:09:24.88\00:09:27.23 it's worst than it has ever been in the past. 00:09:27.26\00:09:29.83 Yeah. This is not a good thing. 00:09:29.86\00:09:32.36 And yet the irony is you're not within those countries. 00:09:32.39\00:09:36.04 Very often the people belonging to the majority religion 00:09:36.07\00:09:38.94 that there is a quite up with the state. 00:09:38.97\00:09:41.04 They may feel no sense of restriction. 00:09:41.07\00:09:43.07 Yeah. They feel privileged. 00:09:43.10\00:09:45.01 Yeah. 00:09:45.04\00:09:46.07 Their religion is protected and fine 00:09:46.10\00:09:47.94 but the judgment from the outside 00:09:47.97\00:09:50.40 in the view of general religious liberty 00:09:50.43\00:09:52.10 is quite severe that this is a country 00:09:52.13\00:09:53.83 that will not allow a divergent religious opinion 00:09:53.86\00:09:56.48 or in the case of Saudi Arabia, 00:09:56.51\00:09:58.46 they wouldn't let them their 00:09:58.49\00:09:59.81 citizens change to any religion. 00:09:59.84\00:10:01.71 Yeah, but you know, that's a short term 00:10:01.74\00:10:06.41 I should say vision because even if you are 00:10:06.44\00:10:09.81 member of the national religion, 00:10:09.84\00:10:12.18 even if you are on the side of the majority. 00:10:12.21\00:10:15.43 If one day you disagree with the mainline 00:10:15.46\00:10:18.97 even if it is your religion, you will be in trouble 00:10:19.00\00:10:22.18 and you may be persecuted. 00:10:22.21\00:10:24.13 And yet a Muslim are persecuted 00:10:24.16\00:10:26.08 in Muslim country, in Islamic countries. 00:10:26.11\00:10:28.03 It's a point I was making, people sometimes miss that. 00:10:28.06\00:10:30.59 And Christian have been persecuted 00:10:30.62\00:10:32.19 in Christian countries too in the past, 00:10:32.22\00:10:34.59 a terrible persecution. 00:10:34.62\00:10:36.30 If you are dissident, if you don't want to follow 00:10:36.33\00:10:40.08 the mainline, you can be persecuted 00:10:40.11\00:10:42.99 like heretics or like apostates. 00:10:43.02\00:10:46.33 Yeah, so what's the answer to this because, you know, 00:10:46.36\00:10:49.86 we stand for what in some ways 00:10:49.89\00:10:52.69 you can trace to a civil constrict of religious liberty, 00:10:52.72\00:10:56.40 but when someone's in a religious context, 00:10:56.43\00:10:59.40 it's very hard to avoid this idea 00:10:59.43\00:11:01.26 that you have the truth and that anyone else 00:11:01.29\00:11:03.62 by definition is you could use a harsh word a heretic 00:11:03.65\00:11:07.97 or spiritual danger. 00:11:08.00\00:11:10.39 It's very hard in that context to sort of grant the right to-- 00:11:10.42\00:11:14.60 to the wrong view to flourish. 00:11:14.63\00:11:17.07 Yeah. Absolutely. 00:11:17.10\00:11:18.28 And we cross that divide between the nice theory 00:11:18.31\00:11:21.09 and yet people that are in the religious context 00:11:21.12\00:11:23.36 for them to grant this freedom. 00:11:23.39\00:11:24.86 That's a very good viewpoint you know, 00:11:24.89\00:11:27.41 and we try when in defending religious freedom, 00:11:27.44\00:11:30.60 we try to explain people that 00:11:30.63\00:11:33.08 you can have a strong conviction. 00:11:33.11\00:11:36.37 You can believe that you have the truth 00:11:36.40\00:11:39.15 and you can believe also that you have to share the truths, 00:11:39.18\00:11:42.50 but at the same time you have to live with all the people 00:11:42.53\00:11:45.86 and you have respect them 00:11:45.89\00:11:47.71 and to let them the same right you have. 00:11:47.74\00:11:51.15 It means you have accept the belief 00:11:51.18\00:11:53.07 the same about their truths, 00:11:53.10\00:11:55.06 even if you believe I have the truths you know, 00:11:55.09\00:11:57.80 what I believe is the truths. 00:11:57.83\00:11:59.66 Maybe it comes down to what was 00:11:59.69\00:12:01.27 in one of the documents out of Rome 00:12:01.30\00:12:03.27 that wasn't talking about this narrowly 00:12:03.30\00:12:05.43 but they mentioned the principle of reciprocity. 00:12:05.46\00:12:09.45 Maybe a lot of religious liberty 00:12:09.48\00:12:10.93 comes to in the reciprocity granting to others 00:12:10.96\00:12:13.47 what you want for yourself. 00:12:13.50\00:12:15.47 Yeah, absolutely if not you cannot leave in community 00:12:15.50\00:12:18.86 you cannot leave with all people 00:12:18.89\00:12:21.10 and what will be the benefit? 00:12:21.13\00:12:22.79 You will won't pass all your time persecuting people 00:12:22.82\00:12:25.86 because you believe they don't have the truth. 00:12:25.89\00:12:28.21 You know, its so oppose to the image 00:12:28.24\00:12:32.65 and the revelation we are from God. 00:12:32.68\00:12:34.71 And its not just that they don't have the truth. 00:12:34.74\00:12:36.83 Its often seen that their view of the truth 00:12:36.86\00:12:39.41 is a direct threat to your view 00:12:39.44\00:12:41.11 and that we have to got against. 00:12:41.14\00:12:42.87 We'll take a short break and be right back 00:12:42.90\00:12:44.62 after this with a discussion with Dr. John Graz 00:12:44.65\00:12:46.82 on the world of religious liberty. 00:12:46.85\00:12:49.06
