Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:22.53\00:00:24.58 This is a program that'll bring you discussion, 00:00:24.61\00:00:28.22 watch it closely, you'll hear opinions, 00:00:28.25\00:00:30.46 information and insights 00:00:30.49\00:00:33.33 into religious liberty developments around the world 00:00:33.36\00:00:36.02 and in the United States, particularly. 00:00:36.05\00:00:37.96 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine. 00:00:37.99\00:00:41.14 And my guest on the program is Tim Roosenberg. 00:00:41.17\00:00:43.66 Interesting background, at the moment 00:00:45.01\00:00:46.89 you're traveling around pretty much full time 00:00:46.92\00:00:49.12 on prophecy seminars featuring Islam. 00:00:49.15\00:00:52.41 You've been a church pastor and an Adventist 00:00:52.44\00:00:56.43 nearly all your life, right? 00:00:56.46\00:00:57.90 How old were you, when you 00:00:57.93\00:00:59.12 joined the Seventh-day Adventist church? 00:00:59.15\00:01:01.00 About 13. Yeah, I thought teenager, yeah. 00:01:02.63\00:01:06.58 So I'm gonna raise a question, authority. 00:01:06.61\00:01:10.78 You know, some one says, 00:01:10.81\00:01:11.84 on whose authority do you say that? 00:01:11.87\00:01:14.59 That's easily handled in the Seven-- 00:01:14.62\00:01:17.76 not the Seventh-day Adventist church, 00:01:17.79\00:01:18.92 but in the Roman Catholic church, 00:01:18.95\00:01:21.20 it's the magisterium of the church, 00:01:21.23\00:01:23.99 which is sort of the accumulated 00:01:24.02\00:01:26.89 authority of the church leadership 00:01:26.92\00:01:28.69 that derives from what they say was the keys of heaven and hell 00:01:28.72\00:01:32.94 that granted to Peter and you know, 00:01:32.98\00:01:34.43 passed on through the patriarchs. 00:01:34.46\00:01:37.32 In some other churches it can be their lack of 00:01:37.35\00:01:40.61 or their insights into Bible principles. 00:01:40.64\00:01:43.86 But you have to speak authoritatively 00:01:43.89\00:01:45.73 and in any organization, certainly if a church 00:01:45.76\00:01:49.08 there's a point that legitimacy derives from, 00:01:49.11\00:01:52.86 but it seems to me in some areas 00:01:53.85\00:01:55.89 this falls down badly. 00:01:55.92\00:01:57.96 Much of the Christian church in the United States 00:01:59.22\00:02:01.75 is not yet through this before. 00:02:01.78\00:02:03.60 But at the moment our own church is dealing with 00:02:03.63\00:02:06.04 an issue, for example of woman's ordination. 00:02:06.07\00:02:08.69 Have your ever thought of that with lot of discussion, 00:02:11.71\00:02:13.97 but is there a need for some alternative authority on this 00:02:14.00\00:02:18.01 or is it just a group of people who love God 00:02:18.04\00:02:21.52 that hope for another world and we do what-- 00:02:21.55\00:02:24.30 as the pope said in one of his documents 00:02:24.33\00:02:26.14 about changing the Saturday Sabbath to Sunday. 00:02:26.17\00:02:28.15 Whatever seems right to you. 00:02:28.18\00:02:29.67 I know for me, my authority is scripture. 00:02:32.35\00:02:34.37 Everything that I'm doing in my ministry currently 00:02:37.00\00:02:40.23 is based on my own study of scripture 00:02:40.26\00:02:42.92 and its corresponding parallels in history. 00:02:42.95\00:02:48.52 When scripture and history are lining up, 00:02:48.55\00:02:51.74 it's telling me I'm on a good path. 00:02:51.77\00:02:54.49 If I am trying to twist scripture 00:02:54.52\00:02:56.16 that take it contrary this history, 00:02:56.19\00:02:58.99 there's probably a twist to my understanding. 00:02:59.02\00:03:01.61 I agree with your point. 00:03:01.64\00:03:02.97 They're the weak, weakened belly of that line 00:03:03.00\00:03:06.41 of course is expressed thorough 00:03:06.44\00:03:08.62 the historical critical approach, 00:03:08.65\00:03:11.03 where you actually can discount some things 00:03:11.06\00:03:13.96 that are in the Bible saying, well, that was just history 00:03:13.99\00:03:16.28 that was just society-- 00:03:16.31\00:03:17.97 I don't much like that, even though 00:03:18.00\00:03:20.11 there's a kernel of truth in that. 00:03:20.14\00:03:21.88 When I'm saying history, I'm not talking about 00:03:21.91\00:03:24.43 the historical critical method as such. 00:03:24.46\00:03:26.53 What I'm talking about is, I'm dealing in Bible prophecy 00:03:26.56\00:03:30.26 and if-- if you can take this prophecy, 00:03:30.29\00:03:35.07 and this one is 2,500 years in the making. 00:03:35.10\00:03:37.57 If it is the same rules of interpretation 00:03:38.63\00:03:42.23 are being applied all the way through 00:03:42.26\00:03:44.53 and it's matching history on those parts 00:03:44.56\00:03:46.93 that are already passed or fulfilled. 00:03:46.96\00:03:49.61 If you keep on the same patterns 00:03:49.64\00:03:51.93 and the same rules of interpretation, 00:03:51.96\00:03:53.81 it should match going on into the future. 00:03:53.84\00:03:58.12 So I'm very careful 00:03:58.15\00:03:59.88 about the study of history and scripture together 00:03:59.91\00:04:02.87 and that's how I can demonstrate to an audience 00:04:02.90\00:04:05.30 that this prophecy that I focus on-- 00:04:05.33\00:04:07.39 That works. 00:04:07.42\00:04:08.45 Has it worked for 2,500 years? 00:04:08.48\00:04:10.07 That works particularly well for the prophecy. 00:04:10.10\00:04:11.72 Now, for the rest of it-- How about the principles? 00:04:11.75\00:04:14.15 Now, for principles on this one, 00:04:14.18\00:04:15.99 you talked about woman's ordination. 00:04:17.21\00:04:20.44 There's other ones that I might unleash on you. 00:04:20.47\00:04:22.49 Okay. 00:04:22.52\00:04:23.62 I've been rather disturbed on this whole discussion. 00:04:25.16\00:04:28.20 In that we have lots of folks on either side 00:04:30.98\00:04:35.34 who has spent a couple of years 00:04:35.37\00:04:38.30 lining up ammunition to throw at the other side. 00:04:38.33\00:04:40.82 And as a result, my question to them is, 00:04:42.52\00:04:46.27 how many people of you've 00:04:46.30\00:04:47.47 lead the Jesus Christ during that time? 00:04:47.50\00:04:49.19 Right. 00:04:49.22\00:04:50.25 Because the greatest commission 00:04:50.28\00:04:52.43 of the scripture for a Christian, 00:04:52.46\00:04:54.33 is to lead people to Jesus Christ. 00:04:54.36\00:04:56.52 Anything else that gets in the way of that 00:04:56.55\00:04:59.19 is a challenge. 00:04:59.22\00:05:00.74 Now, that doesn't mean 00:05:00.77\00:05:01.81 you should just ignore everything. 00:05:01.84\00:05:03.44 No, you can't run from every fight, 00:05:03.47\00:05:04.84 but even as you're saying that I'm thinking about Paul, 00:05:04.87\00:05:07.40 he made some very disparaging 00:05:07.43\00:05:09.50 comments about the other preachers, 00:05:09.53\00:05:11.29 not so much about their doctrine, 00:05:11.32\00:05:12.87 but how they lived. 00:05:12.90\00:05:13.93 Well, this sounds sexism, 00:05:13.96\00:05:15.63 foolish women astray and dissentions and strives, 00:05:15.66\00:05:20.74 these things in themselves are cautionary in a matter 00:05:20.77\00:05:24.11 what you're trying to push, if that's what comes of it. 00:05:24.14\00:05:26.31 Now, about leadership, 00:05:26.34\00:05:27.98 I'm gonna choose not to come down on a side 00:05:30.19\00:05:32.08 at this issue in this discussion, 00:05:32.11\00:05:33.72 because-- 00:05:34.52\00:05:35.58 Oh, I'm not willing that because-- 00:05:35.61\00:05:37.14 Because I've a great-- 00:05:37.17\00:05:38.83 I actually think, the argument is greater 00:05:38.86\00:05:40.94 than the two opinions. 00:05:40.97\00:05:42.65 What I mean is this broad stake than the outcome of it. 00:05:42.68\00:05:46.26 That's why I wrote it on the issue of authority, 00:05:46.29\00:05:48.12 not-- we're not discussing woman's ordination per say. 00:05:48.15\00:05:51.12 I'm going back-- let me say this. 00:05:51.15\00:05:56.29 Our discussion is not so much now a, 00:05:56.32\00:05:59.47 what does the Bible say as much as what is the policy. 00:05:59.50\00:06:02.37 It might be better 00:06:04.32\00:06:05.39 if it was on what scripture says, 00:06:05.42\00:06:07.31 because we might get to more biblical solution. 00:06:07.34\00:06:10.40 That said, I can go back in scripture in history 00:06:12.07\00:06:16.53 to the time of Samuel and the nation of Israel, 00:06:16.56\00:06:21.59 God's people are asking for a king. 00:06:21.62\00:06:25.19 Is a king what God told them to do? 00:06:25.22\00:06:28.03 No, they were supposed to have God as their king 00:06:28.06\00:06:31.84 and they go after-- asking for a king, 00:06:31.87\00:06:34.39 and Samuel gets upset. 00:06:34.42\00:06:37.90 And God tells Samuel to back-off. 00:06:37.93\00:06:41.02 God was kind to Samuel. 00:06:41.05\00:06:43.22 You've read in that story, we all know. 00:06:43.25\00:06:44.69 God was kind to Samuel. 00:06:44.72\00:06:46.70 God says, they haven't rejected you, 00:06:46.73\00:06:48.56 they've rejected Me. 00:06:48.59\00:06:49.62 Which was at least what was going on. 00:06:49.65\00:06:51.81 But they had rejected Samuel; 00:06:51.84\00:06:53.38 remember why they wanted a king? 00:06:53.41\00:06:55.50 It's because of Samuel sons. 00:06:55.53\00:06:56.80 Samuel sons, it made-- 00:06:56.83\00:06:58.05 Okay. 00:06:58.08\00:06:59.11 The whole priestly function in the-- 00:06:59.14\00:07:01.22 But get this. 00:07:01.25\00:07:03.03 Judgeship, just to stink to them. 00:07:03.06\00:07:05.58 So they wanted a legitimate rule. 00:07:05.61\00:07:07.84 So the nation of Israel, 00:07:07.87\00:07:08.94 Gods' people were going contrary to Gods' plan. 00:07:08.97\00:07:12.29 But God was asking not only telling Samuel that it was God, 00:07:12.33\00:07:17.53 not Samuel that is being rejected. 00:07:17.56\00:07:18.98 God turned around and asked Samuel 00:07:19.01\00:07:21.40 to anoint the first two kings. 00:07:21.43\00:07:24.32 The guy that was opposed to a king, 00:07:24.35\00:07:25.94 God went and asked to do it. 00:07:25.97\00:07:27.50 How do I bring this down the women's ordination? 00:07:29.21\00:07:31.31 I may have a side, and I actually have a meaning, 00:07:32.74\00:07:36.73 but I'm really not telling anybody what it is. 00:07:36.76\00:07:39.47 Because I believe, we have a greater issue here-- 00:07:39.50\00:07:42.43 What you're saying I think is God can work through 00:07:42.46\00:07:44.67 whichever way this particular dispute goes. 00:07:44.70\00:07:46.38 He can work through whichever one 00:07:46.41\00:07:47.76 based on the model of Samuel. 00:07:47.79\00:07:48.84 Yes, it's not a total either all. 00:07:48.87\00:07:50.79 I'm going back to scripture, 00:07:50.82\00:07:53.15 I have a story, an illustration in scripture 00:07:53.18\00:07:55.82 that I'm taking as my authority 00:07:55.85\00:07:57.42 of how they handle this situation. 00:07:57.45\00:07:59.34 And what did god asked Samuel to do? 00:07:59.37\00:08:01.39 Go do what I've asked You to do and I'm encouraging people, 00:08:01.42\00:08:05.06 go do what God ask us to do, share the gospel. 00:08:05.09\00:08:07.81 Yeah 00:08:07.84\00:08:08.87 So that's my takes on this 00:08:08.90\00:08:10.73 and based on my authority, which is scripture. 00:08:10.76\00:08:13.84 One of my text lie of the multifaceted approach 00:08:13.87\00:08:17.12 is to think back. 00:08:17.15\00:08:19.05 You mentioned history, 00:08:19.08\00:08:20.11 I think my history when I was a little kid. 00:08:20.14\00:08:23.34 I grew up in Australia and my father, 00:08:23.37\00:08:26.77 almost from my earliest years was already at the division, 00:08:26.80\00:08:29.73 which was the national leadership level, 00:08:29.76\00:08:31.83 for Australia of that church 00:08:31.86\00:08:34.06 and I would trail along with him 00:08:34.09\00:08:35.80 as a little kid, especially in summer camp meeting time. 00:08:35.83\00:08:39.40 When in Australia, they typically ordained 00:08:39.43\00:08:42.96 the ministers to the gospel of ministry. 00:08:42.99\00:08:46.05 And I could remember my father telling me 00:08:46.08\00:08:48.40 over and over again and he didn't-- 00:08:48.43\00:08:50.68 I don't think it was his burden, 00:08:50.71\00:08:52.04 but I would ask questions, you know, what's going on? 00:08:52.07\00:08:54.52 Well, he would say, anybody 00:08:54.55\00:08:56.01 that demanding to be ordained is not suitable to be ordained. 00:08:56.04\00:09:00.71 And that just struck me and my mind, 00:09:02.04\00:09:04.86 so much that for decades 00:09:04.89\00:09:06.42 I didn't even raise the topic in my work to my determent. 00:09:06.45\00:09:09.75 But I just-- my father just sort of impressed on me 00:09:09.78\00:09:14.02 and I do believe that principle, 00:09:14.05\00:09:15.82 not just for women's ordination, 00:09:15.85\00:09:17.21 for really everything that's to do with God. 00:09:17.24\00:09:19.37 You know, whether be servants of God 00:09:20.61\00:09:22.65 and respond to His leading and to His spirit, 00:09:22.68\00:09:24.62 not run ahead of Him. 00:09:24.65\00:09:25.69 And certainly not think as an infamous 00:09:27.42\00:09:31.10 compromise for any Adventist church, 00:09:33.15\00:09:35.19 Ken Wright an associate to Ellen White who-- 00:09:35.22\00:09:38.51 he said to an associate, you know, it's very nice, 00:09:38.54\00:09:40.75 you know, I could have been a great man, 00:09:40.78\00:09:42.40 if I haven't been in this church, 00:09:42.43\00:09:43.98 and he was pretty great in the church, 00:09:44.01\00:09:45.66 was one of the leading elites. 00:09:45.69\00:09:47.23 But his friend, turned to be, 00:09:47.26\00:09:49.14 himself to be a true friend saying, 00:09:49.17\00:09:50.78 you're only great because of this word, 00:09:50.81\00:09:52.47 not because you're great. 00:09:52.50\00:09:54.41 And if someone's doing a powerful work 00:09:54.44\00:09:57.07 for the Lord in bringing insults, 00:09:57.10\00:09:58.78 their reward is with God, to God to stop with-- 00:09:58.81\00:10:00.85 That's right. 00:10:00.88\00:10:01.91 To waste the energy, you know, demanding, 00:10:01.94\00:10:05.21 have you acknowledged? 00:10:05.24\00:10:06.43 I mean, that doesn't work that way. 00:10:06.46\00:10:08.27 We could wish that natural heart does, 00:10:08.30\00:10:10.37 but that's not the way it goes. 00:10:10.40\00:10:11.96 Sooner or later we're gonna move or die 00:10:11.99\00:10:13.87 and the world will go on without us, it's not about us. 00:10:13.90\00:10:17.07 And there is a dynamic that I think it works, 00:10:17.10\00:10:20.92 certainly in our church, 00:10:20.95\00:10:22.01 but I've seen it in other churches. 00:10:22.04\00:10:23.12 This way too many male ministers 00:10:23.15\00:10:26.53 who haven't really done the best by their calling 00:10:26.83\00:10:31.16 and there's a crying need 00:10:31.19\00:10:33.49 for more and more dedicated ministers. 00:10:33.52\00:10:37.06 And I think some women are moved 00:10:37.09\00:10:38.61 to move into the bridge. 00:10:38.64\00:10:40.69 That'll happen naturally, if it's really needed. 00:10:40.72\00:10:43.72 But to force it, 00:10:43.75\00:10:44.78 because you have an agenda for it, 00:10:44.81\00:10:46.39 is again running ahead of the Lord. 00:10:46.42\00:10:48.10 I truly believe that. 00:10:48.13\00:10:49.38 But on this issue, 00:10:49.41\00:10:51.29 I'm less and less interested on the theology of it. 00:10:51.32\00:10:53.65 There is a biblical model, as you say. 00:10:53.68\00:10:56.23 But what're really apply, is our attitude toward God 00:10:56.26\00:10:59.97 and I see in this, and other arguments 00:11:00.00\00:11:02.49 that I've seen, in my church and other churches, 00:11:02.52\00:11:05.08 is often a spirit of rebellion, a spirit of selfishness-- 00:11:05.11\00:11:08.86 Self-advancement and I'm not comfortable with it. 00:11:08.89\00:11:11.78 I'm not comfortable with it at the world at large, 00:11:11.81\00:11:13.74 but I'm embarrassed by it in the church. 00:11:13.77\00:11:16.07 You know-- you and I, 00:11:17.64\00:11:19.35 I'm sure have many short fallings 00:11:19.38\00:11:20.83 as individual Christians 00:11:20.86\00:11:21.90 that we need to look at ourselves first, 00:11:21.93\00:11:23.64 but still we're entitled to look at the church body 00:11:23.67\00:11:26.41 and see, this is just not right, 00:11:26.44\00:11:28.15 it doesn't comport, with what's god called us all. 00:11:28.18\00:11:31.15 You know squabbling, you know-- 00:11:31.18\00:11:33.24 Yeah, yeah. 00:11:33.27\00:11:34.32 The Peter and the Sons of Thunders 00:11:34.35\00:11:38.49 that were wanting to be the greatest in the kingdom. 00:11:38.52\00:11:41.69 You know what did Jesus tell, 00:11:41.72\00:11:42.85 you'll have a place at My right hand, 00:11:42.88\00:11:45.18 you know, you'll go through the trials with Me. 00:11:45.21\00:11:48.01 That's puts ahead of us, not great honor and glory. 00:11:48.04\00:11:51.86 If you're in the church for that 00:11:51.89\00:11:53.37 you're in the wrong place. 00:11:53.40\00:11:54.61 And I say go somewhere else. 00:11:54.64\00:11:56.71 I mean it's a hard thing, but you're not going to be a hero 00:11:56.74\00:12:00.32 to anyone with a heaven and God. 00:12:00.35\00:12:01.97 That's right. 00:12:02.00\00:12:04.18 Any kind of honor's gonna come much later. 00:12:04.21\00:12:07.93 And even if there are some accolades now, 00:12:07.96\00:12:11.12 be a little suspicious of it. 00:12:11.15\00:12:12.79 You can, because if that's coming behind-- 00:12:12.82\00:12:14.71 Well, no, but most-- 00:12:14.74\00:12:17.00 I'm thinking something. 00:12:17.03\00:12:18.06 Human beings don't judge correctly any how 00:12:18.09\00:12:19.43 and they're often applauding for the wrong reason. 00:12:19.46\00:12:21.21 Right. 00:12:21.24\00:12:22.49 But you know, there's many arguments, 00:12:22.52\00:12:25.46 this is just the latest. 00:12:25.49\00:12:26.85 And this isn't people oriented but, you know, 00:12:29.02\00:12:30.78 this big argument about what version of the Bible, 00:12:30.81\00:12:33.87 I mean, there was more on that, 00:12:33.90\00:12:36.44 these are not to be acquainted with the real arguments 00:12:36.47\00:12:38.99 that our church also went through. 00:12:39.02\00:12:40.39 An interpretation of the pivotal 00:12:40.42\00:12:42.68 prophetic lynchpin of our movement. 00:12:42.71\00:12:45.56 Yes, there's a lot at stake, there. 00:12:45.59\00:12:47.50 Fight spiritually, on this, as much as you can. 00:12:47.53\00:12:50.52 But over organizational changes and you know, 00:12:50.55\00:12:55.41 we haven't mentioned Ellen White, 00:12:55.44\00:12:56.55 in any of our programs till now. 00:12:56.58\00:12:59.02 But may be I'll wait till the break. 00:12:59.05\00:13:01.11 We'll take a break now, we'll be right back 00:13:01.14\00:13:03.36 to continue this interesting discussion. 00:13:03.39\00:13:05.39 I'm trying to make it leading edge. 00:13:05.42\00:13:07.72 So stay with us. 00:13:07.75\00:13:08.78
