Welcome back to the "Liberty Insider." 00:00:06.81\00:00:08.52 Before the break I was talking with Tim Rosenberg, 00:00:08.55\00:00:12.33 expert on Islam and Christianity and Daniel 11 00:00:12.36\00:00:16.19 and some of those pivotal prophecies 00:00:16.22\00:00:18.25 but also a pastor. 00:00:18.28\00:00:19.76 Just talking to Tim abou 00:00:19.79\00:00:20.82 how we can motivate church members, 00:00:20.85\00:00:24.05 in particular young people for religious liberty. 00:00:24.08\00:00:26.93 And you've come up with some good ideas 00:00:26.96\00:00:28.84 but, you know, it occurred to me 00:00:28.87\00:00:31.06 the key to this is sort of not moving 00:00:31.09\00:00:33.41 and its way you are hinting at earlier. 00:00:33.44\00:00:34.88 It's an history. 00:00:34.91\00:00:37.00 Yeah, unfortunately most people don't ever love their history. 00:00:37.03\00:00:41.94 But you know what really got the US started? 00:00:41.97\00:00:46.65 It was not the Tea Party 00:00:46.68\00:00:49.20 I mean, the original Tea Party the Boston. 00:00:49.23\00:00:53.22 It was the First Great Awakening 00:00:53.25\00:00:55.72 that set the turn and changed the mindset 00:00:55.75\00:00:58.72 that created this urge for freedom generally 00:00:58.75\00:01:01.43 but it was religious freedom but then it became political. 00:01:01.46\00:01:05.85 And then in the 19th century the mid 1800s 00:01:05.88\00:01:12.56 that was a second great awakening 00:01:12.59\00:01:14.69 that changed the whole landscape 00:01:14.72\00:01:16.54 and brought a refreshing to the religious life 00:01:16.57\00:01:19.44 of the United States. 00:01:19.47\00:01:20.86 And I guess when I'm thinking about it 00:01:20.89\00:01:23.57 that answers our challenge today, 00:01:23.60\00:01:25.72 if there's a broad based true religious awakening revival 00:01:25.75\00:01:32.29 in my church and your church I think by definition 00:01:32.32\00:01:36.52 religious liberty will regain a special prominence. 00:01:36.55\00:01:39.80 Has, Tim? 00:01:39.83\00:01:40.87 Yes, when true spiritual life improves 00:01:40.90\00:01:44.64 religious liberty should be improving. 00:01:44.67\00:01:46.19 Well, and an arrival and awakening will do then. 00:01:46.22\00:01:49.21 Yes. 00:01:49.24\00:01:50.40 So that's what we need to pray for 00:01:50.43\00:01:52.15 and so I've answered my own question. 00:01:52.18\00:01:53.90 I'm thinking of it but that did function in the United States 00:01:53.93\00:01:56.51 that I'm more and more convinced 00:01:56.54\00:01:58.40 the First Great Awakening has everything to do 00:01:58.43\00:02:01.42 with the American Revolution. 00:02:01.45\00:02:03.08 Because it's a-- 00:02:03.11\00:02:04.93 you know, I like American history 00:02:04.96\00:02:06.63 but it's not as simple as it appears 00:02:06.66\00:02:09.61 and in many ways the revolution itself 00:02:09.64\00:02:12.73 was the sort of a low level conspiracy 00:02:12.76\00:02:16.13 between some wealthy landed gentlemen 00:02:16.16\00:02:19.03 in their business interests and their baking desires. 00:02:19.06\00:02:21.58 They wanted to issue currency and so on. 00:02:21.61\00:02:23.65 But that wouldn't have gone anywhere 00:02:23.68\00:02:25.89 except that they found an answering response 00:02:25.92\00:02:29.23 from the whole body of people 00:02:29.26\00:02:30.70 that have been invigorated by sense of their-- 00:02:30.73\00:02:33.31 their self determination as Christians before God 00:02:33.34\00:02:36.99 and the principles of freedom 00:02:37.02\00:02:38.92 and you know, that they couldn't be 00:02:38.95\00:02:40.81 trodden on anyone. 00:02:40.84\00:02:41.94 I think that's when it linked 00:02:41.97\00:02:44.23 and of course the view which we counter in liberty 00:02:44.26\00:02:47.71 to some degreebut the view that God has a hand over 00:02:47.74\00:02:50.34 the of offensive nations and so on 00:02:50.37\00:02:51.68 and they took at the next step. 00:02:51.71\00:02:53.21 You know, American exception was 00:02:53.24\00:02:54.72 but that okay from the great awakening, 00:02:54.75\00:02:57.95 and without the grate awakening I just don't believe, 00:02:57.98\00:03:01.03 that the American Revolution probably 00:03:01.06\00:03:02.73 wouldn't have succeeded to stop with and even it had it 00:03:02.76\00:03:05.13 would have been a much more violent 00:03:05.16\00:03:10.98 and ultimately unsuccessful endeavor. 00:03:11.01\00:03:15.84 It wouldn't have created the states 00:03:15.87\00:03:18.23 because you know, the other miracle of America 00:03:18.26\00:03:21.24 is that the sovereignty, several states 00:03:21.27\00:03:23.20 turned into a single country they really want as that begin. 00:03:23.23\00:03:27.14 Yeah, yeah, 00:03:27.17\00:03:28.94 after the article and confederation on the rest 00:03:28.97\00:03:31.47 but I do believe God was working in all that, 00:03:31.50\00:03:35.54 gave us a springboard 00:03:35.57\00:03:36.98 for an example of what religious liberties 00:03:37.01\00:03:40.09 could be like at least to some extent. 00:03:40.12\00:03:43.27 Well, obviously there's a-- I thought of this lately 00:03:43.30\00:03:47.17 oh, there's a poem by William-- not William, 00:03:47.20\00:03:50.35 Lord Alfred Tennyson, the gleam. 00:03:50.38\00:03:54.13 Speaks of the gleam going for the idea the vision 00:03:54.16\00:03:57.75 and I think there was a, there was a spiritual vision 00:03:57.78\00:04:00.48 about many people of the land of freedom and opportunity 00:04:00.51\00:04:04.01 'cause that's beyond religion 00:04:04.04\00:04:05.51 but it included religious self determination 00:04:05.54\00:04:08.27 and the gleam is over shattered lot of sad realities 00:04:08.30\00:04:12.29 but the gleam is always been there 00:04:12.32\00:04:13.72 pulling us forward. 00:04:13.75\00:04:14.78 Yeah. 00:04:14.81\00:04:16.17 Well, as far as young people I think we step 00:04:16.20\00:04:22.40 with what we got this idealism misdirected and all the rest 00:04:22.43\00:04:25.36 but I think with young people and old people 00:04:25.39\00:04:27.42 we certainly could work 00:04:27.45\00:04:28.48 toward reviving their religious sensibilities. 00:04:28.51\00:04:31.03 Yeah, but that idealism, is idealism wrong? 00:04:31.06\00:04:35.49 The gleam is an ideal, isn't it? 00:04:35.52\00:04:37.12 Oh, I think idealism is not any wrong, 00:04:37.15\00:04:39.27 you can't live without it. 00:04:39.30\00:04:40.68 Yeah, and so we've got to harness that 00:04:40.71\00:04:43.06 and not just show them the-- the dangers 00:04:43.09\00:04:46.15 of what happens if you lose it 00:04:46.18\00:04:48.46 but the ideal that they're reaching forward 00:04:48.49\00:04:51.99 to something better just around that corner. 00:04:52.02\00:04:53.99 Yeah, and it has to be something transcend 00:04:54.02\00:04:59.12 and not limited in its-- its not utilitarian we do this 00:04:59.15\00:05:04.19 because if we believe in religious liberty 00:05:04.22\00:05:06.09 someone else will leave us alone or that's all true. 00:05:06.12\00:05:10.63 May be. 00:05:10.66\00:05:11.69 Well, at least 00:05:11.72\00:05:12.75 its part of the expectation of reciprocity. 00:05:12.78\00:05:15.73 As one of the-- the people documents even says 00:05:15.76\00:05:19.04 speaking of the presence we've done this, you did this. 00:05:19.07\00:05:22.31 But I think if it's on a transcend 00:05:22.34\00:05:24.06 and global view it's just a principle 00:05:24.09\00:05:26.44 that you're embody because you believe in that 00:05:26.47\00:05:28.46 and these good things flow from it. 00:05:28.49\00:05:30.69 But you went to others as it would happen. 00:05:30.72\00:05:31.76 Yeah. 00:05:31.79\00:05:32.83 Do you want to hear? Yep. 00:05:32.86\00:05:34.00 And you know, back to what we see 00:05:34.03\00:05:36.36 on Islamic fundamentalism expressed 00:05:36.39\00:05:38.49 through the Jihadi terrorist movement, 00:05:38.52\00:05:41.55 there's not much positive reciprocity 00:05:41.58\00:05:44.56 at work is there? 00:05:44.59\00:05:45.62 Yeah. 00:05:45.65\00:05:46.68 Its intimidation, its violence and, you know, 00:05:46.71\00:05:49.84 my way or the highway. 00:05:49.87\00:05:51.71 Well, may way or-- 00:05:51.74\00:05:52.99 It's a death. 00:05:53.02\00:05:54.43 It's a death and you know, 00:05:54.46\00:05:56.96 I think religion is a whole 00:05:56.99\00:05:58.71 it's not going to be help by this. 00:05:58.74\00:06:00.54 Even if-- even if aggressive 00:06:00.57\00:06:03.50 western/Christian response would have put that down 00:06:03.53\00:06:07.05 it would-- itself would just 00:06:07.08\00:06:08.75 like whole war really 00:06:08.78\00:06:10.56 you drone to that low common denominator 00:06:10.59\00:06:13.26 and it's not a good place for religious exchange 00:06:13.29\00:06:15.72 in religious liberty to exist it. 00:06:15.75\00:06:18.12 Yeah, I was just thinking 00:06:18.15\00:06:19.18 I had some Muslims in one my meetings telling me 00:06:19.21\00:06:21.59 that the Middle East had Muslim territories 00:06:21.62\00:06:25.16 have freedom of religion. 00:06:25.19\00:06:26.82 Religious liberty. 00:06:26.85\00:06:27.88 They really told you that? 00:06:27.91\00:06:28.94 Oh, they told me that and they were arguing 00:06:28.97\00:06:30.60 and I said, let me understand this. 00:06:30.63\00:06:32.97 I can go to and I named a couple of countries 00:06:33.00\00:06:35.50 and I could take my Bible, 00:06:35.53\00:06:36.77 I could go on the street and convince people 00:06:36.80\00:06:39.02 to become Christian and started church right there. 00:06:39.05\00:06:43.07 And they tried to tell me yes. 00:06:43.10\00:06:44.62 I said, what? 00:06:44.65\00:06:48.09 You know and I know that's not true. 00:06:48.12\00:06:50.23 Oh, there's a wide proof even in the most liberal 00:06:50.26\00:06:52.73 there's a wide variety of laws restricting 00:06:52.76\00:06:54.83 on Muslim behavior like in Indonesia, 00:06:54.86\00:06:59.61 which is a relatively open country. 00:06:59.64\00:07:03.98 Our Christian school there if one Muslim student registers 00:07:04.01\00:07:08.15 they have to hire Muslim students to teach them, 00:07:08.18\00:07:10.34 forbidden for a Christian to teach a Muslim 00:07:10.37\00:07:12.07 and that's pretty typical. 00:07:12.10\00:07:13.99 It's all designed to-- to encapsulate 00:07:14.03\00:07:17.71 this tainting religious influence 00:07:17.74\00:07:20.34 and at many times it's more than that it's punitive. 00:07:20.37\00:07:23.12 There are penalties and extra charges 00:07:23.15\00:07:26.76 and severe restrictions on movement and behavior. 00:07:26.79\00:07:31.31 And something that I'm surprised 00:07:31.34\00:07:33.03 that they didn't acknowledge 00:07:33.06\00:07:34.68 it's a boost of most Muslim country 00:07:34.71\00:07:36.52 that there is no such thing 00:07:36.55\00:07:37.60 as separation of church and state. 00:07:37.63\00:07:39.47 Yeah. 00:07:39.50\00:07:40.53 It's antithetical to the current view 00:07:40.56\00:07:43.55 of how the religion operates toward the state. 00:07:43.58\00:07:46.46 It's to become the state. 00:07:46.49\00:07:48.32 It's not that they joined together. 00:07:48.35\00:07:49.96 There's no-- there is only one entity. 00:07:49.99\00:07:53.52 The states is your religious enforcer 00:07:53.55\00:07:57.24 and of course we see that fully exemplified in Iran 00:07:57.27\00:08:00.14 to their detriment. 00:08:00.17\00:08:02.88 But you've had some wonderful discussions 00:08:02.91\00:08:04.57 I could tell with some of your attendees 00:08:04.60\00:08:06.89 and some of the Muslims. 00:08:06.92\00:08:08.24 Yeah, I get a brand new group every other week. 00:08:08.28\00:08:10.04 Yeah, now I really believe that your ministry 00:08:10.07\00:08:15.22 is touching people in a way that very few 00:08:15.25\00:08:18.94 or I put it another way. 00:08:18.97\00:08:20.42 It's touching that it's-- the people that you're touching 00:08:20.45\00:08:22.96 some of these ones that would not be touched 00:08:22.99\00:08:25.75 by normal well, you know, the traditional prophecy 00:08:25.78\00:08:30.58 or even spiritual average programs 00:08:30.61\00:08:34.07 and we need to do that. 00:08:34.10\00:08:36.04 There's different approaches for different folks 00:08:36.07\00:08:38.45 and given that this whole world is convulse 00:08:38.48\00:08:41.70 by this often violent dialog between Christianity and Islam. 00:08:41.73\00:08:46.77 We need to move in there and explain it. 00:08:46.80\00:08:49.82 Yes. 00:08:49.85\00:08:50.89 Misinformation. 00:08:50.92\00:08:52.07 So final word on young people and well, 00:08:52.10\00:08:55.56 I shouldn't just make young people-- 00:08:55.59\00:08:56.62 Is it anybody? 00:08:56.65\00:08:57.68 How do we involve the rank and file 00:08:57.71\00:09:00.40 of our faith in religious liberty? 00:09:00.43\00:09:05.43 Well, one of the things I've learned 00:09:05.46\00:09:06.99 is not just looking at the apocalyptic 00:09:07.02\00:09:09.20 and the problems and all the rest of that 00:09:09.23\00:09:11.55 but you really look it. 00:09:11.58\00:09:12.95 Hey, this is about rescue. This is about Jesus returning. 00:09:12.98\00:09:16.03 This is about the good news of treating others 00:09:16.06\00:09:17.71 like we wanted to be treated. 00:09:17.74\00:09:20.31 Jesus said, hey all the stuff is happening in the world 00:09:20.34\00:09:23.45 let not your heart be troubled. 00:09:23.48\00:09:24.97 You believe in God believe also in me 00:09:25.00\00:09:26.65 I'm coming again is what He is saying. 00:09:26.68\00:09:28.66 And He is coming to take us to be with Him in heaven. 00:09:28.69\00:09:31.51 We really need to be excited about that 00:09:31.54\00:09:33.10 and sure that along with all the rest. 00:09:33.14\00:09:37.74 Many apostles library is over burdened 00:09:37.77\00:09:41.72 by books dealing with this topic 00:09:41.75\00:09:44.66 many a seminaries' 00:09:44.69\00:09:46.33 library is filled to overflowing by this topic. 00:09:46.36\00:09:51.26 How to witness and yet it's amazing 00:09:51.29\00:09:54.65 because you look at the Bible and its very obvious 00:09:54.68\00:09:57.97 how the gospel commission began. 00:09:58.00\00:10:00.66 It was people who'd been healed the lame, the blind. 00:10:00.69\00:10:05.65 Thus that it'd been relived 00:10:05.68\00:10:06.93 to some incredible spiritual possession. 00:10:06.96\00:10:09.37 They said, all I know is that I once was blind, 00:10:09.40\00:10:12.98 I once was lame, now I see. 00:10:13.01\00:10:15.98 When we talk about religious liberty 00:10:16.01\00:10:17.80 I know that that is the key element to we want people 00:10:17.83\00:10:21.66 who've experienced religious liberty 00:10:21.69\00:10:24.02 understand what a truly stands for and how intimately 00:10:24.05\00:10:28.11 its connected with the gospel commission. 00:10:28.14\00:10:31.34 With that sort of attitude it should be too hard 00:10:31.37\00:10:33.71 to speak about religious liberty. 00:10:33.74\00:10:35.49 As Paul said, to speak of the gospel of liberty 00:10:35.52\00:10:38.65 as the Bible says elsewhere to proclaim liberty 00:10:38.68\00:10:42.13 through out the land. 00:10:42.16\00:10:43.87 We don't need too many books 00:10:43.90\00:10:46.12 other than the great book to tell us how to do that. 00:10:46.15\00:10:49.26 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:10:51.63\00:10:55.04
