Welcome to the "Liberty Insider." 00:00:19.91\00:00:21.65 This is the program bringing you up-to-date news, views 00:00:21.68\00:00:24.65 and discussion on religious liberty events 00:00:24.69\00:00:27.96 around the world 00:00:27.99\00:00:29.52 and in the United States on occasion. 00:00:29.56\00:00:31.66 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine 00:00:31.69\00:00:35.06 and my guest on the program is Kim Peckham 00:00:35.10\00:00:39.57 and you are a man of many talents 00:00:39.60\00:00:41.17 but I will at least pin you down by saying 00:00:41.20\00:00:43.51 that you've carried the communications function 00:00:43.54\00:00:46.24 at the Review and Herald Publishing Association, 00:00:46.27\00:00:49.64 near where I live in Hagerstown, Maryland. 00:00:49.68\00:00:52.01 An institution that we may talk about later, 00:00:52.05\00:00:53.98 that's in transition. 00:00:54.02\00:00:55.58 Let's say. Let's say that. 00:00:55.62\00:00:57.25 Well, Kim, let's talk about things 00:00:57.29\00:00:59.29 and I will go back to one of your earliest involvements 00:00:59.32\00:01:02.12 with Liberty Magazine. 00:01:02.16\00:01:04.63 You've got many skills 00:01:04.66\00:01:05.99 and one of them you could visualize 00:01:06.03\00:01:07.83 and put together some great promotional material on video 00:01:07.86\00:01:11.47 and I needed help one year in putting together 00:01:11.50\00:01:14.80 that is Liberty promotional video. 00:01:14.84\00:01:18.04 I don't make to many pretensions 00:01:18.07\00:01:21.18 because they can't be fulfilled 00:01:21.21\00:01:22.54 but I had filmed myself 00:01:22.58\00:01:24.91 interviewing Pastor Anthony Alexander 00:01:24.95\00:01:28.75 who had been released from jail in Sri Lanka 00:01:28.78\00:01:30.75 on terrorism changers, 00:01:30.79\00:01:32.12 then done some rowing footage 00:01:32.15\00:01:33.82 and I wanted you to make it a great video. 00:01:33.86\00:01:36.93 Yeah, we put together the pieces on that. 00:01:36.96\00:01:38.69 I remember you were part of it, 00:01:38.73\00:01:40.73 you focused on America's dedication to religious liberty 00:01:40.76\00:01:46.74 from the earliest, earliest days 00:01:46.77\00:01:48.90 we went down there to the Jefferson Memorial in D.C. 00:01:48.94\00:01:52.81 and did some shots down there and-- 00:01:52.84\00:01:54.94 I had forgotten that. I see its coming back. 00:01:54.98\00:01:57.68 Yeah, of course, that I forgotten too 00:01:57.71\00:01:59.81 and then you had that great story. 00:01:59.85\00:02:04.32 What was the-- remind me, 00:02:04.35\00:02:06.29 that's the part I forgotten was a story-- 00:02:06.32\00:02:07.99 Well, Pastor Alexander and I've mentioned it 00:02:08.02\00:02:10.66 recently even in some sermons as I traveled around. 00:02:10.69\00:02:12.89 So wonderful story started off very badly in Sri Lanka 00:02:12.93\00:02:16.87 at that time country driven by civil war 00:02:16.90\00:02:21.30 and in my mind I'm says my age as I think of Sri Lanka 00:02:21.34\00:02:24.81 as Ceylon that it's a country in the modern ear 00:02:24.84\00:02:29.28 fell into civil war between the Buddhist 00:02:29.31\00:02:31.85 and the Hindus and two ethnic groups 00:02:31.88\00:02:34.72 and the Guerrillas the Tamil Tiger Guerrillas 00:02:34.75\00:02:38.12 had actually attacked 00:02:38.15\00:02:39.69 the capital of Colombo at one point. 00:02:39.72\00:02:41.86 They destroyed jetliners at the airport, terrific thing. 00:02:41.89\00:02:46.23 And here Seventh-day Adventists 00:02:46.26\00:02:48.63 and in particular this Seventh-day Adventist 00:02:48.66\00:02:51.23 teacher and pastor Anthony Alexander 00:02:51.27\00:02:53.17 was teaching at a boarding school 00:02:53.20\00:02:56.71 in the middle of the civil war. 00:02:56.74\00:02:58.37 One of his student came from the outlying area, 00:02:58.41\00:03:02.04 the government identified the student 00:03:02.08\00:03:03.71 as actually a member of the Tamil Tiger Guerrillas 00:03:03.75\00:03:06.48 and here a Christian teaching a Tamil Tiger 00:03:06.51\00:03:10.19 he must be part of the same thing 00:03:10.22\00:03:11.95 and he was arrested and charged with terrorism 00:03:11.99\00:03:14.39 and this was before 9/11. 00:03:14.42\00:03:15.99 So what was he upshot with this pastor? 00:03:17.89\00:03:19.23 Well, the upshot took a while to shoot 00:03:19.26\00:03:24.10 but at least two years as I remember 00:03:24.13\00:03:26.23 his trial dragged on, 00:03:26.27\00:03:29.00 our lawyers and others went across and met with the-- 00:03:29.04\00:03:33.14 well, they usually just sat and caught and listen 00:03:33.17\00:03:35.58 but they came back very depressed 00:03:35.61\00:03:36.95 that they thought if he was lucky 00:03:36.98\00:03:39.05 he wouldn't get the death penalty 00:03:39.08\00:03:40.42 but that was the risk. 00:03:40.45\00:03:42.38 He was in jail all that time and just when we thought 00:03:42.42\00:03:46.39 that it was last without any warning 00:03:46.42\00:03:48.82 he was suddenly released pending a further trial 00:03:48.86\00:03:51.46 and he was spirited to the US 00:03:51.49\00:03:54.46 and he has finished his-- continued his ministry there 00:03:54.50\00:03:56.93 but we say God's leading in his providential release 00:03:56.97\00:04:00.44 but the context was horrible. 00:04:00.47\00:04:03.41 Before 9/11 for a Christian teacher 00:04:03.44\00:04:06.27 in another country doing what God had called him to do, 00:04:06.31\00:04:08.78 not middling in politics at all here accused of terrorism. 00:04:08.81\00:04:14.02 Well, it seems like often the ideas of religious liberty 00:04:14.05\00:04:17.59 get caught up in politics lately. 00:04:17.62\00:04:19.52 Well, nearly always. 00:04:19.55\00:04:21.06 The two things you don't talk about are religion and politics 00:04:21.09\00:04:24.39 and when you are talking religious liberty 00:04:24.43\00:04:26.26 it does involve those things. 00:04:26.29\00:04:28.93 So they assumed it because he was teaching 00:04:28.96\00:04:31.93 he who had a political interest in the Tamil Tigers then. 00:04:31.97\00:04:35.90 Yes, and very often Christian missionaries, 00:04:35.94\00:04:39.97 particularly those coming from the United States 00:04:40.01\00:04:41.91 they seen as agents of imperialism 00:04:41.94\00:04:45.41 or the opposition. 00:04:45.48\00:04:48.38 So there is baggage to the situation 00:04:48.42\00:04:51.12 even if that person is very squeaky clean 00:04:51.15\00:04:54.42 and purely biblically based and mission oriented. 00:04:54.46\00:04:59.06 It's a difficult situation. 00:04:59.09\00:05:01.06 But to say you put that video together, right, remember? 00:05:01.10\00:05:03.70 I do, I know, its all bits that are coming back. 00:05:03.73\00:05:06.37 And as I was telling you before the program 00:05:06.40\00:05:08.97 it obviously worked because of any-- 00:05:09.00\00:05:13.58 I was gonna say promotional but that sort of a crossword 00:05:13.61\00:05:15.88 but if any informational video 00:05:15.91\00:05:18.28 that we had and we do want to air 00:05:18.31\00:05:20.98 at least that one got the best response. 00:05:21.02\00:05:24.12 It connected with our donors in a very efficient way. 00:05:24.15\00:05:28.46 Have you speculated on why that was because-- 00:05:28.49\00:05:30.39 I think it because you put it together. 00:05:30.43\00:05:31.86 Well, I'm glad. 00:05:31.89\00:05:33.23 Let's, let's go with that by all means 00:05:33.26\00:05:35.83 but I mean its almost surprising 00:05:35.86\00:05:37.20 because here is a situation on the other side of the world 00:05:37.23\00:05:41.70 and why would that connect with your people 00:05:41.74\00:05:44.87 who are mostly in North America. 00:05:44.91\00:05:46.37 Why would they say, 00:05:46.41\00:05:47.74 you know, any identify with this poor man over-- 00:05:47.78\00:05:52.01 Now I'm getting the benefit on the video. 00:05:52.05\00:05:53.95 We have a whole spectrum of materials 00:05:53.98\00:05:56.95 during that time of the year, the video was one element. 00:05:56.99\00:05:59.69 I think another visual element we had I was sure and a poster 00:05:59.72\00:06:04.33 that we sent out 00:06:04.36\00:06:06.29 mostly to Seventh-day Adventist churches 00:06:06.33\00:06:08.93 and that poster showed a young girl behind a mess, 00:06:08.96\00:06:14.87 screen sort of a barbwire screen. 00:06:14.90\00:06:17.17 And I do know, you know this too, 00:06:17.21\00:06:19.77 you sort of go through 00:06:19.81\00:06:22.01 an emotional contact with people 00:06:22.04\00:06:23.88 when you use young children and animals. 00:06:23.91\00:06:27.28 Right? 00:06:27.32\00:06:28.65 Yeah, so the next year we will use a puppy dog. 00:06:28.68\00:06:30.99 I keep telling our people to do that but we haven't featured 00:06:31.02\00:06:34.82 but next year our video will feature a dog 00:06:34.86\00:06:37.63 that was forbidden to go to the kennels 00:06:37.66\00:06:40.73 on Sabbath I think. 00:06:40.76\00:06:43.30 Silly dog. That's silly. 00:06:43.33\00:06:44.67 We-- now it is very serious stuff 00:06:44.70\00:06:49.00 but at the same time as you know it's our obligation 00:06:49.04\00:06:53.38 as stewards and custodians of the care 00:06:53.41\00:06:56.61 in this case of the magazine and the message. 00:06:56.64\00:07:00.02 You know, we want to maximize the effect 00:07:00.05\00:07:02.05 and put it in a way 00:07:02.08\00:07:03.89 that's emotionally appealing to people 00:07:03.92\00:07:05.65 and I think it was something about that story 00:07:05.69\00:07:09.36 and the visuals that came with it that did connect 00:07:09.39\00:07:12.79 and I'm always looking for that. 00:07:12.83\00:07:15.40 And our latest issue of Liberty Magazine 00:07:15.43\00:07:18.83 has on the cover a refugee fleeing 00:07:18.87\00:07:22.27 from the murderer's intent of ISIL, 00:07:22.30\00:07:27.28 this terrorist Jihadi group in-- 00:07:27.31\00:07:32.15 from Syria coming into Iraq. 00:07:32.18\00:07:34.75 And, you know, I think that that should appeal 00:07:34.78\00:07:37.09 to people the same way. 00:07:37.12\00:07:38.65 Now I think you were telling me this several days ago 00:07:38.69\00:07:41.49 that their policy is almost religious cleansing 00:07:41.52\00:07:45.49 that they are-- 00:07:45.53\00:07:46.86 No, it's not always it is. 00:07:46.90\00:07:49.86 And yeah, we may even have a whole discussion on that 00:07:49.90\00:07:53.27 but, yes, its worth remembering 00:07:53.30\00:07:55.20 for those that are watching this program 00:07:55.24\00:07:57.57 and I hope it is not too longer leg 00:07:57.61\00:08:00.28 between us filming it and it going out 00:08:00.31\00:08:02.84 but things are not likely to change much 00:08:02.88\00:08:05.28 but it's only a few weeks ago now that the city of Mosul 00:08:05.31\00:08:09.28 and as I remember that's the second largest city 00:08:09.32\00:08:11.39 in Iraq was over run by this group 00:08:11.42\00:08:16.12 and there were many Christians in Mosul 00:08:16.16\00:08:18.19 and many other religious minorities other than Muslims 00:08:18.23\00:08:21.53 and all of them were rounded up, 00:08:21.56\00:08:25.33 all of them were threatened. 00:08:25.37\00:08:26.70 Christians immediately were told that they must wear, 00:08:26.74\00:08:30.57 it was a funny letter and I don't know why? 00:08:30.61\00:08:31.94 I think it was an "M" like the star 00:08:31.97\00:08:33.58 of David in Hitler's Germany. 00:08:33.61\00:08:36.01 They had to wear that. 00:08:36.04\00:08:37.38 They were told that, that they had a choice initially 00:08:37.41\00:08:40.12 of convert to Islam 00:08:40.15\00:08:41.82 or pay the demi, the religious tax 00:08:41.85\00:08:44.15 but within a few hours not have been the same day 00:08:44.19\00:08:47.66 then it was harden to, you become a Muslim or you die. 00:08:47.69\00:08:53.50 And those that didn't immediately flee were killed 00:08:53.53\00:08:57.00 and many thousands of Christians were killed. 00:08:57.03\00:08:59.10 There are no Christian in Mosul anymore, none. 00:08:59.13\00:09:02.37 There is the points you covered there 00:09:02.40\00:09:04.01 it's so reminiscent like the middle ages 00:09:04.04\00:09:06.78 where those who were dissenting with the main church 00:09:06.81\00:09:11.71 were actually had to wear a yellow cross on their clothes 00:09:11.75\00:09:15.08 and were sometimes outright killed 00:09:15.12\00:09:18.42 if they didn't get and run. 00:09:18.45\00:09:20.19 And I've said this on this program before 00:09:20.22\00:09:22.32 and I don't think this program can be accused 00:09:22.36\00:09:25.39 of being of excusing these sort of things, 00:09:25.43\00:09:29.13 particularly at the moment with Jihadi's 00:09:29.16\00:09:31.37 and so called radical of fundamentalists Islamism 00:09:31.40\00:09:36.47 but in the bigger context we know that many religions 00:09:36.50\00:09:40.84 and certainly Christianity 00:09:40.88\00:09:42.21 in the middle ages of acted similarly. 00:09:42.24\00:09:46.28 This is why we need Liberty Magazine and religious freedom 00:09:46.31\00:09:48.85 because the natural tendency of monolithic religious society 00:09:48.88\00:09:54.56 is to persecute the opposition. 00:09:54.59\00:09:57.36 Yeah, I'm always proud of Liberty that it functions 00:09:57.39\00:10:01.26 or like to keep that in our minds, 00:10:01.30\00:10:04.00 you know, a sort of like you may say, 00:10:04.03\00:10:06.03 well, we don't really need police 00:10:06.07\00:10:07.54 because everyone in my neighborhood is nice. 00:10:07.57\00:10:09.30 But there is always this sort of this reminder 00:10:09.34\00:10:13.11 that there is this standard that we need to be aware of 00:10:13.14\00:10:16.81 and that needs to be-- we need to be reminded of it, 00:10:16.85\00:10:19.61 protect it even though right now 00:10:19.65\00:10:22.12 sometimes it doesn't--it seems like are long way from ISIL 00:10:22.15\00:10:24.99 right now in that situation. 00:10:25.02\00:10:27.56 Well, this is turning into a discussion of ISIL. 00:10:27.59\00:10:29.49 So I will tell you but I wrote an editorial 00:10:29.52\00:10:33.60 and that's just come out in our current issue 00:10:33.63\00:10:37.57 for the beginning of 2015 00:10:37.60\00:10:40.64 and I had to comment on it. 00:10:40.67\00:10:43.94 You can turn on your TV almost any day now 00:10:43.97\00:10:46.34 and there will be something on ISIL. 00:10:46.37\00:10:47.98 It's the talk of the town. 00:10:48.01\00:10:49.81 Yes. 00:10:49.84\00:10:51.31 But an aspect that I thought needed to be brought out 00:10:51.35\00:10:54.65 and it is discussed now but at that time it was latent. 00:10:54.68\00:10:58.52 Was the idea that here is a group in coming from Syria 00:10:58.55\00:11:04.49 or into Iraq they call the Islamic State of Syria 00:11:04.53\00:11:11.50 and Iraq or the Islamic State of Syria and the Levant 00:11:11.53\00:11:17.21 which is the area between Turkey and Egypt 00:11:17.24\00:11:22.21 or as the Bible puts it the glorious land, 00:11:22.24\00:11:25.25 that's the holy land. 00:11:25.28\00:11:26.61 So that's their claim but there is lot of discussion 00:11:26.65\00:11:30.45 and dismay about it. 00:11:30.49\00:11:31.82 I noticed the Pope of Rome even deviated a little 00:11:31.85\00:11:35.72 from the calls for peace 00:11:35.76\00:11:37.33 and restraint and he said 00:11:37.36\00:11:40.53 that they needed to be attacked which is interesting. 00:11:40.56\00:11:43.30 And I thought in a curious way, no ones much remarked on it, 00:11:43.33\00:11:45.73 that's not dissimilar 00:11:45.77\00:11:47.64 from I think Pope Urban 00:11:47.67\00:11:49.60 declaring the crusades, you know. 00:11:49.64\00:11:52.71 Heaven demands it said, Urban, you know, go there. 00:11:52.74\00:11:57.18 So there whole civilized, 00:11:57.21\00:11:58.55 quite civilized world is confronted by this 00:11:58.58\00:12:00.45 but what I believe is the real danger. 00:12:00.48\00:12:02.95 It's not what they're doing there 00:12:02.98\00:12:04.32 which is just stabilizing to the error 00:12:04.35\00:12:06.62 and probably never has a chance of becoming 00:12:06.65\00:12:11.39 the global caliphate that they demand. 00:12:11.43\00:12:13.93 But it can change the map of the Middle East. 00:12:13.96\00:12:16.87 But the real danger is the young men and women 00:12:16.90\00:12:20.94 who are fighting there, 00:12:20.97\00:12:23.07 they come from your neighborhood 00:12:23.10\00:12:24.44 and my neighborhood. 00:12:24.47\00:12:25.81 They might even be someone from Hagerstown there. 00:12:25.84\00:12:28.34 Are you sure? 00:12:28.38\00:12:29.71 I'm not sure about Hagerstown but it's not impossible. 00:12:29.74\00:12:33.52 It's already been noted that these beheading videos, 00:12:33.55\00:12:37.82 so far there are nearly always a person 00:12:37.85\00:12:39.75 with an English accent. 00:12:39.79\00:12:41.12 They seem like they come from booming endless of world. 00:12:41.16\00:12:43.22 Yes. 00:12:43.26\00:12:44.63 They are not locals, 00:12:44.66\00:12:46.90 these are Islamic fundamentalist adventurers, 00:12:46.93\00:12:51.20 young people usually from Australia, 00:12:51.23\00:12:53.84 from Canada, from England, from the US, Germany, 00:12:53.87\00:12:59.27 all throughout Europe. 00:12:59.31\00:13:01.28 They've been recruited from allover. 00:13:01.31\00:13:03.01 Now I went and looked online 00:13:03.04\00:13:04.98 and did some research on ISIL 00:13:05.01\00:13:07.72 and they don't really know the number 00:13:07.75\00:13:10.05 but it's a time they were gathering figures, 00:13:10.09\00:13:12.19 they were guessing maybe 15,000 of them 00:13:12.22\00:13:14.82 and 7,000 of them were Saudi Arabians 00:13:14.86\00:13:17.13 which should tell something 00:13:17.16\00:13:19.83 but the overwhelming this is the largest group 00:13:19.86\00:13:23.20 but beyond that there were a couple of hundred, 00:13:23.23\00:13:26.13 five of six hundred from the US I think, 00:13:26.17\00:13:28.20 from all over the major countries. 00:13:28.24\00:13:30.97 Now they are there now 00:13:31.01\00:13:34.11 and unless the bombing kills all of them 00:13:34.14\00:13:36.08 they will come back just as soldiers 00:13:36.11\00:13:38.61 come back from all wars. 00:13:38.65\00:13:40.12 They will come back with clearly a very radical agenda. 00:13:40.15\00:13:44.15 They will come back with military training. 00:13:44.19\00:13:45.92 They will come back with unresolved antagonisms 00:13:45.95\00:13:49.96 toward the west and the religions of the west 00:13:49.99\00:13:53.76 something will happen. 00:13:53.80\00:13:55.20 Not to mention the appeals that are being put out 00:13:55.23\00:13:58.23 on the internet too our neighborhoods 00:13:58.27\00:14:00.90 and many of those young people can't or won't go 00:14:00.94\00:14:04.54 but they share those attitudes 00:14:04.57\00:14:06.37 and so I wrote this. 00:14:06.41\00:14:07.74 I said, this is the danger. 00:14:07.78\00:14:09.64 It will put religious liberty under severe stress. 00:14:09.68\00:14:12.25 How the authorities going to deal 00:14:12.28\00:14:14.55 with this up bubbling of violence in our community 00:14:14.58\00:14:18.15 from these Jihadi's? 00:14:18.19\00:14:21.22 Is my neighborhood 00:14:21.26\00:14:23.93 and are the so called civilized countries 00:14:23.96\00:14:26.93 going to have the patience to root them out one at a time 00:14:26.96\00:14:31.20 or will there be some blanket 00:14:31.23\00:14:33.40 prohibition of the whole class of people 00:14:33.44\00:14:35.67 or a class of religious thinking? 00:14:35.70\00:14:38.37 Because there has been a shift since 9/11 00:14:38.41\00:14:42.61 to saying fundamentalism is dangerous 00:14:42.64\00:14:45.11 whether it's Christianity or Islam. 00:14:45.15\00:14:46.75 It's called extremism 00:14:46.78\00:14:48.12 as how so is referred to, extremism. 00:14:48.15\00:14:50.12 Extremism. 00:14:50.15\00:14:51.49 So if you're religious but you don't-- 00:14:51.52\00:14:54.99 not too serious about it 00:14:55.02\00:14:56.39 you are okay but if your religion 00:14:56.42\00:14:59.16 is central to your life, 00:14:59.19\00:15:00.53 you are seen as potentially dangerous. 00:15:00.56\00:15:01.90 Exactly, that seems to be 00:15:01.93\00:15:03.26 that to the picture that's been painted here, 00:15:03.30\00:15:04.83 if you care about religion you are somehow dangerous 00:15:04.87\00:15:08.24 and if you just don't take it too seriously 00:15:08.27\00:15:11.07 then you are welcome in our area. 00:15:11.11\00:15:13.98 Yeah, so how would you communicate this 00:15:14.01\00:15:16.64 if you had to do a video of this sort of thing? 00:15:16.68\00:15:19.31 What's the image that we should, 00:15:19.35\00:15:21.32 that we should seize upon? 00:15:21.35\00:15:24.62 Sorry, I'll give you a moment to think about it. 00:15:24.65\00:15:26.65 Let's-- we'll come back after a break 00:15:26.69\00:15:29.12 and continue this program. 00:15:29.16\00:15:30.49 So stay with us for this discussion. 00:15:30.53\00:15:32.33
