Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:04.84\00:00:06.49 Before the break with guest, Charles Mills, 00:00:06.52\00:00:10.18 again we were uphill and down there, 00:00:10.21\00:00:11.92 but all to bring out how can we involve 00:00:11.95\00:00:14.85 young people in religious liberty? 00:00:14.88\00:00:16.88 I think it's the burning need 00:00:16.91\00:00:19.86 certainly in everything that I do 00:00:19.89\00:00:21.55 for the Seventh-day Adventist church, 00:00:21.58\00:00:22.76 but bit large in the world. 00:00:22.79\00:00:24.56 We need to get this army of young people 00:00:24.59\00:00:27.62 that are involved with many, many things 00:00:27.65\00:00:29.98 even political movements like Occupy Wall Street in that, 00:00:30.01\00:00:34.58 yes, there were a lot of young people there, 00:00:34.61\00:00:36.08 but lets get them speaking up from moral principles, 00:00:36.11\00:00:39.45 for defending the right of anybody 00:00:39.48\00:00:42.99 to believe anything they want. 00:00:43.02\00:00:44.62 Now I'm gonna play the devil advocate here. 00:00:44.65\00:00:46.41 That's a sort of liberalism that our world 00:00:46.44\00:00:48.42 really has trouble with nowadays. 00:00:48.45\00:00:49.75 I'm gonna give you a huge dose of reality 00:00:49.78\00:00:51.73 and you already know this, so I'm giving it you anyway. 00:00:51.76\00:00:54.87 We want to teach young people good morals 00:00:54.90\00:00:58.95 as their parents marriage falls apart, 00:00:58.98\00:01:01.92 as there are affairs 00:01:01.95\00:01:03.28 and as there is pornography in the house, 00:01:03.31\00:01:07.22 and its incredible amount in our Christian world. 00:01:07.25\00:01:10.19 We want to teach young people to be honest 00:01:10.22\00:01:13.11 as they watch their dad or mom cheat on their income tax 00:01:13.14\00:01:17.12 or go faster than the speed limit. 00:01:17.15\00:01:19.62 We wanted to teach young people, 00:01:19.65\00:01:21.49 how if you treat the opposite sex 00:01:21.52\00:01:23.81 kindly as we watch 00:01:23.84\00:01:26.44 what is so seen in advertisements, 00:01:26.47\00:01:28.73 what is seen in everything 00:01:28.76\00:01:30.55 they look at on their iPods or pads or on television 00:01:30.58\00:01:34.25 which does not treat the sexes equally at all 00:01:34.28\00:01:37.49 which is demeaning. 00:01:37.52\00:01:38.84 We want to make sure that these young people 00:01:38.87\00:01:41.60 come out of that completely prepared 00:01:41.63\00:01:45.96 to accept what you're saying. 00:01:45.99\00:01:49.02 So where does it begin? 00:01:49.05\00:01:50.31 Does it begin with the young person? 00:01:50.34\00:01:51.61 Does it begin with the parents? 00:01:51.64\00:01:52.80 Where is it begin? I probably better give up. 00:01:52.83\00:01:55.98 Don't give up, you can't give up. 00:01:56.01\00:01:57.45 Where is it begin? No, but you're right its-- 00:01:57.48\00:02:00.25 there is-- morality is an old fashion word, 00:02:00.28\00:02:02.62 moral declension on every front end society 00:02:02.65\00:02:05.64 and yes it's a toll ordered to create a new generation 00:02:05.67\00:02:08.82 that is broken from the sins of-- 00:02:08.85\00:02:10.81 Is it DNA? 00:02:10.84\00:02:12.14 Is it in your genes that makes sure 00:02:12.17\00:02:14.50 you're gonna be a nice person. 00:02:14.53\00:02:16.38 Can you really be taught, 00:02:16.41\00:02:17.56 can a bad person be really taught and who teaches them? 00:02:17.59\00:02:19.86 What I do think what we need 00:02:19.89\00:02:21.06 and I spoke about it before the break, 00:02:21.09\00:02:22.75 we need renewal in individual lives. 00:02:22.78\00:02:26.40 You know the-- again back to you as history, 00:02:26.43\00:02:31.12 there's different ways to explain US history on the-- 00:02:31.15\00:02:35.62 Interesting way putting it, yes. 00:02:35.65\00:02:36.99 Well, the war of independence 00:02:37.02\00:02:38.45 which I riffed on about earlier, 00:02:38.48\00:02:40.70 probably made some enemies 00:02:40.73\00:02:42.72 can be described different ways. 00:02:42.75\00:02:44.28 You can commit it from Paul Revere and so on. 00:02:44.31\00:02:47.03 But you can also explain it societally by recognize them 00:02:47.06\00:02:51.66 that about 25 years before that revolution, 00:02:51.69\00:02:54.66 they'd been a massive religious revival in the United States, 00:02:54.69\00:02:57.58 the first grade awakening. 00:02:57.61\00:02:59.97 Then in the mid 1800's 00:03:00.00\00:03:01.83 there was the second grade awakening. 00:03:01.86\00:03:04.28 Those two spiritual phenomena I think, 00:03:04.31\00:03:10.87 explain an awful lot of what happened in the United States. 00:03:10.90\00:03:13.33 It doesn't explain well the war, 00:03:13.36\00:03:15.01 but when a war began, 00:03:15.04\00:03:16.07 why so many Americans had high moral ideas, 00:03:16.10\00:03:19.46 sawed as a moral absolute, 00:03:19.49\00:03:21.43 why they selflessly gave themselves to it, 00:03:21.46\00:03:23.86 why in the mid 1800's 00:03:23.89\00:03:25.75 so many religious groups not only, 00:03:25.78\00:03:28.88 so many religious groups came about 00:03:28.91\00:03:31.22 but things that came from that like the temperance movement, 00:03:31.25\00:03:35.38 like the health reform movements 00:03:35.41\00:03:38.14 that led to a better quality of life. 00:03:38.17\00:03:39.72 They were many "social things" that spring from the revival 00:03:39.75\00:03:45.64 and I believe the United States 00:03:45.67\00:03:48.59 is to use an overarching description 00:03:48.62\00:03:51.49 that was becoming spiritually deselect, 00:03:51.52\00:03:54.40 and yes it does need to be healed 00:03:54.43\00:03:56.71 but the way to heal it is for individuals 00:03:56.74\00:03:59.27 to recommit themselves 00:03:59.30\00:04:00.45 in a life changing way to a spiritual idea. 00:04:00.48\00:04:04.52 And when that happens yes, 00:04:04.55\00:04:06.31 even the predictions of doom and gloom 00:04:06.34\00:04:08.72 and to our own church Ellen White, 00:04:08.75\00:04:10.68 said I don't know if you remember 00:04:10.71\00:04:12.46 she says that this country will at some point 00:04:12.49\00:04:14.45 turn its back on every principle of the constitution. 00:04:14.48\00:04:17.38 We are halfway there already. 00:04:17.41\00:04:19.60 But it doesn't have to happen now, 00:04:19.63\00:04:21.15 and it can be-- 00:04:21.18\00:04:22.21 that evil day can be turn back with this process 00:04:22.24\00:04:25.01 which would by definition begin with the new generation. 00:04:25.04\00:04:28.81 You know, I grew up in a Seventh-day Adventist home, 00:04:30.66\00:04:35.80 very Christian, very godly dad. 00:04:35.83\00:04:38.45 My dad was the treasurer of the Middle East division 00:04:38.48\00:04:41.26 and he accused New York at the different missions 00:04:41.29\00:04:46.79 and conferences and unions and this was the man of honor. 00:04:46.82\00:04:52.13 I saw examples of what we should be in his life. 00:04:52.16\00:04:57.92 I remember at the camp meetings 00:04:57.95\00:04:59.26 and he accused New York at the Union Springs Academy 00:04:59.29\00:05:01.96 and every Sabbath they would take up the offering 00:05:01.99\00:05:04.76 and my dad's cabin would be piled high with money. 00:05:04.79\00:05:08.90 The one side over there were raided all of the business 00:05:08.93\00:05:11.50 on the business side of the cabin. 00:05:11.53\00:05:13.51 There were dollar bills stacked up there, 00:05:13.54\00:05:15.24 stacked up there, stacked up there 00:05:15.27\00:05:16.92 and I knew beyond a doubt 00:05:16.95\00:05:18.20 that every penny of that money is gonna end up in the bank 00:05:18.23\00:05:22.26 Monday morning down the Union Springs 00:05:22.29\00:05:24.37 because my dad was in charge. 00:05:24.40\00:05:26.88 I never saw my dad leer at any women. 00:05:26.91\00:05:30.38 If something came on the television 00:05:30.41\00:05:31.73 that he didn't agree with he turned it off. 00:05:31.76\00:05:33.18 I got up walk crossed room and turned it off. 00:05:33.21\00:05:35.33 He wanted to make sure that he was modeling for me 00:05:35.36\00:05:40.19 what I needed to be and I think that helped me 00:05:40.22\00:05:44.04 understand what you're saying about religious liberty 00:05:44.07\00:05:46.58 and how Christ is supposed to be our model. 00:05:46.61\00:05:48.92 I have no problem with that. 00:05:48.95\00:05:50.58 So probably I'm gonna make some enemies here, 00:05:50.61\00:05:52.82 but I'm gonna have to say that a lot of the problem 00:05:52.85\00:05:56.47 is that we are facing not only in this country 00:05:56.50\00:05:59.44 but also in our church, I lay at the feet of parents. 00:05:59.47\00:06:02.98 I'm sorry but I have to say this. 00:06:03.01\00:06:05.82 Teachers as well, pastors as well, 00:06:05.85\00:06:07.99 we need to be models and that's hard work 00:06:08.02\00:06:10.54 that's not easy to do. 00:06:10.57\00:06:12.16 That is something we need to dedicate ourselves to doing 00:06:12.19\00:06:16.40 and the way we do that is we look to our model 00:06:16.43\00:06:20.37 and that model is Jesus Christ. 00:06:20.40\00:06:22.53 There's been a disconnect here. 00:06:22.56\00:06:23.70 Yeah, and it's not just the suddenly 00:06:23.73\00:06:26.29 this generation of parents lit down-- 00:06:26.32\00:06:28.66 No, it's been slipping, 00:06:28.69\00:06:29.72 it's been slipping more and more. 00:06:29.75\00:06:31.14 It's been slipping but its-- 00:06:31.17\00:06:33.21 many of the reasons beyond the families control 00:06:33.24\00:06:36.75 but once they recognize they can be reversed. 00:06:36.78\00:06:40.05 There's no question, well, there is no question 00:06:40.08\00:06:44.41 but I'll go back a little further. 00:06:44.44\00:06:46.33 When you and I were growing up 00:06:46.36\00:06:48.07 was under the cloud of the threat 00:06:48.10\00:06:51.39 from the Soviet Union and global communist. 00:06:51.42\00:06:53.53 Literal possible cloud, yes. 00:06:53.56\00:06:56.03 Yes, the mushroom cloud has come to at least-- 00:06:56.06\00:06:58.88 Oh, yes. Recent thing. 00:06:58.91\00:07:01.80 But part of what we were told 00:07:01.83\00:07:04.98 and it was true was that it was an existential threat 00:07:05.01\00:07:08.39 to western civilization and all that we knew 00:07:08.42\00:07:10.35 because they were, 00:07:10.38\00:07:11.42 they were taking the children 00:07:11.45\00:07:12.50 from the parents and training them 00:07:12.53\00:07:14.06 and secular ways and all of that. 00:07:14.09\00:07:16.54 And you know that sound terrific. 00:07:16.57\00:07:18.00 We saw that, that was the end of the values 00:07:18.03\00:07:20.50 that we held but in reality, modernization, 00:07:20.53\00:07:24.91 capitalism and the social developments 00:07:24.94\00:07:29.22 in the west have done the same thing. 00:07:29.25\00:07:31.92 There's day care, there's-- 00:07:31.95\00:07:34.41 you mentioned the television 00:07:34.44\00:07:35.95 and the mainlining of every abomination, 00:07:35.98\00:07:39.51 murder and you know, the studies of how many times 00:07:39.54\00:07:42.43 in an hour a child sees someone killed on television. 00:07:42.46\00:07:45.24 So they could do on how many times a minute? 00:07:45.27\00:07:47.39 When murder becomes normal, why not turn that thing off? 00:07:47.42\00:07:48.75 I switch it, I switch it, yes, I switch it on, 00:07:48.78\00:07:51.83 when I given to the motel rooms 00:07:51.86\00:07:53.19 and most channels have got someone being killed. 00:07:53.22\00:07:55.37 Oh, awful, awful. 00:07:55.40\00:07:57.55 But the economic structures since World War II, 00:07:57.58\00:08:02.35 which is largely required that women work 00:08:02.38\00:08:05.22 has left the children at home, has broken down the families. 00:08:05.25\00:08:08.66 So there's many huge stresses of modern life 00:08:08.69\00:08:12.63 that have been attacking the family 00:08:12.66\00:08:15.55 and its ability to inculcate these values 00:08:15.58\00:08:18.15 that we are talking about. 00:08:18.18\00:08:19.36 And some how we need to come-- 00:08:19.39\00:08:21.30 what I'm trying to do is explain it in a real world 00:08:21.33\00:08:23.84 but it doesn't just look like an indictment on these people. 00:08:23.87\00:08:26.13 You know, you let your kids down and shame on you. 00:08:26.16\00:08:29.26 Yes, they did but it wasn't out of the blue, 00:08:29.29\00:08:32.25 there's been something that 00:08:32.28\00:08:33.31 I believe that devils behind it. 00:08:33.34\00:08:34.50 I believe it's an evil pulse in society 00:08:34.53\00:08:37.39 to destroy all of the good structures 00:08:37.42\00:08:39.94 and do expose now the new generation 00:08:39.97\00:08:42.90 to selfishness, to violence and to an activism 00:08:42.93\00:08:47.58 with anything but God's principles. 00:08:47.61\00:08:50.59 And of course, I'm totally aware 00:08:50.62\00:08:52.50 that very good kid is gonna come 00:08:52.53\00:08:54.34 from a very bad parents and vice-a-versa. 00:08:54.37\00:08:57.04 You can have model parents who live godly lives 00:08:57.07\00:09:01.95 and their children just go crazy, 00:09:01.98\00:09:04.58 but it's the amount, 00:09:04.61\00:09:06.64 it's the ratio I'm talking about here. 00:09:06.67\00:09:09.23 Absolutely, but, you know, 00:09:09.26\00:09:11.50 there are something we're doing 00:09:11.53\00:09:12.71 in religious liberty to involve young people 00:09:12.74\00:09:16.34 and the time is running out, 00:09:16.37\00:09:17.49 but, you know, we have the freedom class room program 00:09:17.52\00:09:20.40 out of California where young people in high school 00:09:20.43\00:09:23.09 are taken under the wing of religious liberty leaders 00:09:23.12\00:09:25.61 or sent around to all of the high spots 00:09:25.64\00:09:27.78 in Washington and else where brought to conferences trained 00:09:27.81\00:09:31.26 and prepared like the schools of the prophets 00:09:31.29\00:09:33.97 if you like to be religious liberty leaders of tomorrow. 00:09:34.00\00:09:36.95 There are some good things, its not like all hopeless 00:09:36.98\00:09:40.18 but in the aggregate I think we are in a difficult situation 00:09:40.21\00:09:43.23 and we need to work methodically 00:09:43.26\00:09:45.46 to involving and educating and impairing 00:09:45.49\00:09:48.69 and perhaps let the Lord regenerate 00:09:48.72\00:09:52.37 and create reborn young people. 00:09:52.40\00:09:55.27 That's just an old Nicodemus can say 00:09:55.30\00:09:57.02 that a young person can be born again too. 00:09:57.05\00:09:58.78 I like that, that is the message of hope 00:09:58.81\00:10:00.78 for every one of us, we need to take that to heart. 00:10:00.81\00:10:03.16 We can affect what's happening in the world. 00:10:03.19\00:10:05.96 Just like an another program we talked about, 00:10:05.99\00:10:07.59 we can bring God back to this world, 00:10:07.62\00:10:10.79 we can bring God and His love back into society, 00:10:10.82\00:10:14.18 we can also bring that understanding 00:10:14.21\00:10:16.26 of what love is and tolerance is, 00:10:16.29\00:10:18.54 and what acceptance is in religious liberty issues 00:10:18.57\00:10:21.97 when it comes to our young people. 00:10:22.00\00:10:24.50 But it against with each one of us, 00:10:24.53\00:10:25.89 each one of us has responsibility to do that, 00:10:25.92\00:10:28.13 and we begin by finding a model for ourselves 00:10:28.16\00:10:31.11 and of course that would be a life of Jesus Christ. 00:10:31.14\00:10:34.34 There's no question as we read the story of Jesus calling 00:10:36.24\00:10:40.15 is immediate followers His disciples 00:10:40.18\00:10:43.97 that He tended to choose young men. 00:10:44.00\00:10:46.52 Peter perhaps accepted but young men had the energy 00:10:46.55\00:10:50.81 and the vision developed in and then the Jesus intended, 00:10:50.84\00:10:54.73 but in some ways He was backing the tendency of the times 00:10:54.76\00:10:58.59 because for millennia, thousands of years 00:10:58.62\00:11:02.12 it was the experience of age that was respected. 00:11:02.15\00:11:05.70 The elders sitting at the gate 00:11:05.73\00:11:07.58 could direct the community in what to do, 00:11:07.61\00:11:09.91 they knew by experience but we were in a model today 00:11:09.94\00:11:13.99 and young people know how to work the computer gizmos 00:11:14.02\00:11:18.01 that the all people are scared of. 00:11:18.04\00:11:19.89 Young people are more connected socially 00:11:19.92\00:11:22.96 to what's happen through Twitter and so on. 00:11:22.99\00:11:25.42 Young people have the energies they always have, 00:11:25.45\00:11:28.96 and I think it's imperative 00:11:28.99\00:11:30.66 that when we talk about religious liberty 00:11:30.69\00:11:33.01 we include young people and educate young people. 00:11:33.04\00:11:36.56 How we do that is beyond the scope 00:11:36.59\00:11:39.01 of our half hour discussion, 00:11:39.04\00:11:40.87 but I think as you the listener who heard us 00:11:40.90\00:11:43.93 you'd agree with us somehow, 00:11:43.96\00:11:46.39 someway in the very near future young people must be given, 00:11:46.42\00:11:52.02 must catch and must communicate the vision 00:11:52.05\00:11:55.59 and the enthusiasm for the religious liberty 00:11:55.62\00:11:58.06 for these times not an old view but a new view. 00:11:58.09\00:12:01.84 For Liberty Insider this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:03.38\00:12:06.76
