Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.04\00:00:07.69 Before the break with fellow philosopher Charles Mills- 00:00:07.72\00:00:12.50 We were, we were getting 00:00:12.53\00:00:14.26 to the very root of what lies behind religious sensibility 00:00:14.29\00:00:18.00 and then how that expresses itself 00:00:18.03\00:00:19.73 in the context of religious liberty. 00:00:19.76\00:00:21.63 And of course, 00:00:21.66\00:00:22.69 this all in the context of the world today 00:00:22.72\00:00:25.39 with this fast forgetting religious liberty 00:00:25.42\00:00:27.24 is more instead of chopping of someone's head 00:00:27.27\00:00:29.68 and saying, I'll act by role, God be praised or you know, 00:00:29.71\00:00:34.94 I shouldn't get into Buddhist, 00:00:34.97\00:00:36.56 but even the Buddhist would burn, 00:00:36.59\00:00:37.91 you know, the Vietnam war they will burn themselves 00:00:37.94\00:00:40.48 or now kill the Rohingyas up in minority 00:00:40.51\00:00:46.27 and in Myanmar Buddhist killing 00:00:46.30\00:00:49.76 religious minorities they are saying-- 00:00:49.79\00:00:50.89 They're calling on a God who would say don't do that, 00:00:50.92\00:00:53.95 what you're about to do, don't do that. 00:00:53.98\00:00:55.49 Yes. Exactly, all right. 00:00:55.52\00:00:57.74 So that often they are denying the very religious principle 00:00:57.77\00:01:00.43 but they motivated by religious sentiment. 00:01:00.46\00:01:03.33 Well, then how on earth can you say 00:01:03.36\00:01:05.53 that religion is the answer, 00:01:05.56\00:01:06.98 because before the break I asked you-- 00:01:07.01\00:01:08.05 No, religion is not the answers, 00:01:08.08\00:01:09.23 spirituality is the answer. 00:01:09.26\00:01:10.38 There we go, that's what I'm after. 00:01:10.41\00:01:11.78 Yes, religion is not the answer because I was gonna say 00:01:11.81\00:01:14.69 if religion is the answer what religion, whose religion, 00:01:14.72\00:01:18.19 and whose interpretation of religion? 00:01:18.22\00:01:19.97 Organized religion, is nothing 00:01:20.00\00:01:22.76 inherently wrong with organization 00:01:22.79\00:01:25.11 but there's something inherently risky 00:01:25.14\00:01:26.90 with organizing anything, 00:01:26.93\00:01:28.18 because it becomes over arching in our church 00:01:28.21\00:01:31.65 the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:01:31.68\00:01:33.71 Ellen White who was a prophetic figure 00:01:33.74\00:01:36.82 and one of the pioneer she spoke, 00:01:36.85\00:01:39.09 quite sharply at times against the organization 00:01:39.12\00:01:42.01 that she helped organize. 00:01:42.04\00:01:43.15 Yeah. 00:01:43.18\00:01:44.31 She said it was-- I don't sure she is the word 00:01:44.34\00:01:46.42 but she gave concept there was a necessary evil. 00:01:46.45\00:01:51.93 You will see that written at the General Conference, 00:01:51.96\00:01:53.91 necessary evil, right. 00:01:53.94\00:01:55.11 But you know, I'll go back to history of Henry, 00:01:55.14\00:01:59.12 there is to many Henry's, 00:01:59.15\00:02:00.80 let start the ending with Henry VIII 00:02:00.83\00:02:02.18 and his quest for children and many war 00:02:02.21\00:02:06.12 but I think Henry V or IV with Thomas a Becket 00:02:06.15\00:02:10.62 who was a meddling priest 00:02:10.65\00:02:13.23 and that's what Thomas a Becket-- 00:02:13.26\00:02:15.04 what Henry said of him 00:02:15.07\00:02:16.10 well, nobody rid me of this meddling priest 00:02:16.13\00:02:19.11 and priest and religionist have meddled 00:02:19.14\00:02:23.45 with human affairs from time and memorial 00:02:23.48\00:02:26.19 and I think they compromise their faith whenever they do. 00:02:26.22\00:02:29.42 Religion should stay with the inner life 00:02:29.45\00:02:32.43 and motivate people to live 00:02:32.46\00:02:35.10 their secular life in a better way. 00:02:35.13\00:02:37.00 You realize what you're saying here? 00:02:37.03\00:02:39.05 You realize what's happening today 00:02:39.08\00:02:40.72 in this world today that is exactly 00:02:40.75\00:02:42.51 what you're saying, shouldn't happen? 00:02:42.54\00:02:44.30 Well, let me get to something 00:02:44.33\00:02:45.92 that's been playing on my mind for the last day or two. 00:02:45.95\00:02:48.24 I received several books in the mail, 00:02:48.27\00:02:51.01 written by a well known conservative 00:02:51.04\00:02:54.34 quite historian David Barton, 00:02:54.37\00:02:57.24 and he challenges the current legal opinion 00:02:57.27\00:03:00.63 that Thomas Jefferson and the constitution argue 00:03:00.66\00:03:04.50 for a separation of church and state 00:03:04.53\00:03:07.58 and David Barton using history 00:03:07.61\00:03:10.61 or at least his vision of history 00:03:10.64\00:03:12.40 tries to show that this was a Christian, 00:03:12.43\00:03:14.37 the United States was a Christian nation 00:03:14.40\00:03:15.99 from the beginning 00:03:16.02\00:03:17.08 and one of his video shows that godly origins of America. 00:03:17.11\00:03:23.52 Well, I've watched it and it sort of troubles me 00:03:23.55\00:03:28.16 because he is mixing two things, 00:03:28.19\00:03:32.22 evidence of spirit-- 00:03:32.25\00:03:34.07 stated evidences of spirituality 00:03:34.10\00:03:36.62 by all in some including some of the religious leaders. 00:03:36.65\00:03:39.80 He uses as evidence that this is a Christian republic. 00:03:39.83\00:03:43.14 When we talk about a Christian republic, 00:03:43.17\00:03:45.47 we're talking about a structure, an organization 00:03:45.50\00:03:48.84 and it is pretty easy to prove 00:03:48.87\00:03:50.93 that America was rather unique for its time, 00:03:50.96\00:03:54.32 that it was a state premised on just secular ideals 00:03:54.35\00:03:57.48 in fact, even antireligious ideals 00:03:57.51\00:03:59.77 as the French Revolution was. 00:03:59.80\00:04:02.12 The thing is that formed that we're not pro-religion at all 00:04:02.15\00:04:05.55 and yet as they did that many of the individuals 00:04:05.58\00:04:09.15 who were part of it had a great personal respect for religion 00:04:09.18\00:04:12.02 and they accomplished almost the unthinkable. 00:04:12.05\00:04:14.29 They set up a secular state that was designed 00:04:14.32\00:04:16.80 to encourage personal spirituality. 00:04:16.83\00:04:19.43 They left the religion at the door 00:04:19.46\00:04:20.83 when they walked in to sign the constitution. 00:04:20.86\00:04:21.89 But they were not antireligious. 00:04:21.92\00:04:23.59 In the slightest, most of them 00:04:23.62\00:04:25.88 were extremely personally religious 00:04:25.91\00:04:30.02 and all of them were deeply respectful 00:04:30.05\00:04:32.17 of the religious tradition 00:04:32.20\00:04:33.55 that their culture had nurtured, 00:04:33.58\00:04:37.48 but David Barton and others sort of take one 00:04:37.51\00:04:40.54 and take it across the fence and try to say 00:04:40.57\00:04:43.15 therefore this is a religious government. 00:04:43.18\00:04:46.12 To me it's a huge misunderstanding 00:04:46.15\00:04:49.17 but reverse engineering that I think 00:04:49.20\00:04:51.83 that's what we need again now, 00:04:51.86\00:04:53.98 and its missing from the world or the poet Matthew Arnold, 00:04:54.01\00:04:57.57 spoke about the lights of the black west vanishing 00:04:57.60\00:05:03.28 and he says "The Sea of Faith was once, too, at the full," 00:05:03.31\00:05:06.45 but he says I hear its slow melancholy retreating roar. 00:05:06.48\00:05:10.43 That in my view is what's happened 00:05:10.46\00:05:12.54 and because the Bible speaks of it Gods spirit 00:05:12.57\00:05:14.47 even being withdrawn from the world. 00:05:14.50\00:05:16.78 That's what I think is happening. 00:05:16.81\00:05:18.48 As people divest themselves of personal inner spirituality, 00:05:18.51\00:05:23.89 what are you left with? 00:05:23.92\00:05:24.96 You left with the bare burns of religious doctrine, 00:05:24.99\00:05:27.78 of the religious history, of the antagonisms 00:05:27.81\00:05:31.25 that have characterized the centuries 00:05:31.28\00:05:32.86 and that's the devils playground. 00:05:32.89\00:05:34.96 How could you say its withdrawing now, 00:05:34.99\00:05:36.35 it's been that way since Adam and Eve. 00:05:36.38\00:05:38.14 Yes, but I see in area, 00:05:38.17\00:05:39.91 I think something radical happening 00:05:39.94\00:05:41.51 and I see it in a prophetic sense. 00:05:41.54\00:05:43.39 I think in a biblical sense I think literally 00:05:43.42\00:05:46.70 God is pulling back from evil 00:05:46.73\00:05:49.86 but sociologically we can seen many signs, 00:05:49.89\00:05:52.48 you know, the increasing secularization 00:05:52.51\00:05:55.47 and what's the word I'm looking for, 00:05:55.50\00:05:59.06 materialism of the west and the TV games 00:05:59.09\00:06:02.00 and you just go on and on have really divorced 00:06:02.03\00:06:05.05 the newer generations from values like 00:06:05.08\00:06:08.47 religion and spirituality, inner morality and so on, 00:06:08.50\00:06:11.67 very utilitarian very me, me, me oriented. 00:06:11.70\00:06:14.30 They don't see an example to follow. 00:06:14.33\00:06:15.78 No, and I think very clearly 00:06:15.81\00:06:17.96 just this is someone looking at as sociologist, 00:06:17.99\00:06:21.65 they're good reasons to see why violence 00:06:21.68\00:06:25.10 and selfishness and are on the rise 00:06:25.13\00:06:29.70 and altruism is on the decline. 00:06:29.73\00:06:31.71 And that fed into the modern mix 00:06:31.74\00:06:34.44 which includes historical religions means violence. 00:06:34.47\00:06:38.29 You have said this many times 00:06:38.32\00:06:39.64 that it doesn't have to be the way it is, 00:06:39.67\00:06:42.79 we don't have to just sit back 00:06:42.82\00:06:44.30 and say well, okay, its just gonna happen 00:06:44.33\00:06:46.05 there's nothing we can do about it 00:06:46.08\00:06:47.22 because God is withdrawing 00:06:47.25\00:06:49.06 and so we might just get ready for the second coming, 00:06:49.09\00:06:52.07 it doesn't have to be that way. 00:06:52.10\00:06:53.39 We can be active in reversing this. 00:06:53.42\00:06:57.01 We can invite God back again. 00:06:57.04\00:06:59.77 How do we do that? 00:06:59.80\00:07:00.99 And you know this is where I agree with-- 00:07:01.02\00:07:04.14 No, I want the Lord to come like anybody else, 00:07:04.17\00:07:06.60 but why force the issue. 00:07:06.63\00:07:08.33 Why don't you just let Him come when He wants to come? 00:07:08.36\00:07:10.05 If they can meet one interesting point 00:07:10.08\00:07:11.55 with only few minutes to go in our program. 00:07:11.58\00:07:13.61 But you know, I used to meet 00:07:13.64\00:07:14.78 a lot with the people in religious right 00:07:14.81\00:07:17.27 and good people most of them, 00:07:17.30\00:07:19.38 I mean I only say most 00:07:19.41\00:07:21.44 because I know most people enough, 00:07:21.47\00:07:23.32 what I mean is not everybody is, 00:07:23.35\00:07:24.97 but they apparently all very good people. 00:07:25.00\00:07:27.10 And one of the things that did impress me invariably 00:07:27.13\00:07:30.64 when they prayed they would pray 00:07:30.67\00:07:32.84 that God would heal this nation. 00:07:32.87\00:07:34.83 Now that's a good pray, I agree with that. 00:07:34.86\00:07:37.47 God can heal it or to put it in another way, 00:07:37.50\00:07:40.40 as we reach toward God and open our lives spiritually, 00:07:40.43\00:07:45.07 and embody the deeper principles of faith 00:07:45.10\00:07:48.11 a change will come. 00:07:48.14\00:07:49.64 There's no question 00:07:49.67\00:07:52.25 whether we be on the tipping point 00:07:52.28\00:07:54.60 that's a philosophical thing but it's never too late. 00:07:54.63\00:07:58.40 And as I read in the Bible when God says to the Nineveh, 00:07:58.43\00:08:01.36 you know, 40 days Nineveh is gonna be destroyed. 00:08:01.39\00:08:04.28 They repented it wasn't destroyed. 00:08:04.31\00:08:07.42 When Jesus said to His disciples, 00:08:07.45\00:08:09.07 you know, things are gonna happen 00:08:09.10\00:08:11.13 some of you still alive, people doubt that. 00:08:11.16\00:08:14.59 Jesus said you will see this, it didn't. 00:08:14.62\00:08:19.21 C. S. Lewis spoke to that 00:08:19.24\00:08:20.73 and he said I'd rather believe in a God 00:08:20.76\00:08:22.27 who didn't know than a God who was wrong. 00:08:22.30\00:08:24.63 Jesus didn't know because he was not privy 00:08:24.66\00:08:27.32 to His father's thoughts at that time. 00:08:27.35\00:08:29.12 He said later He had ascended. 00:08:29.15\00:08:32.76 Now, there's a God is given us a path in his dynamic 00:08:32.79\00:08:36.45 and He is not mandating 00:08:36.48\00:08:37.86 that the world ends at a certain time, 00:08:37.89\00:08:39.44 it ends at a certain time 00:08:39.47\00:08:40.54 because we are declining from Him, 00:08:40.57\00:08:43.69 brings about conditions that require conclusion. 00:08:43.72\00:08:47.33 Interesting. Interesting. 00:08:47.36\00:08:48.39 But we can I believe, 00:08:48.42\00:08:49.86 and specifically talking about religious liberty, 00:08:49.89\00:08:52.60 we can, not in the individual 00:08:52.63\00:08:54.50 but in the aggregate as we changed, 00:08:54.53\00:08:56.34 we can turn back not the hands of time 00:08:56.37\00:09:00.12 but we can turn back 00:09:00.15\00:09:01.41 the vicious violence of religious conflict. 00:09:01.44\00:09:04.94 We can turn back the United States 00:09:04.97\00:09:07.25 to what the David Barton and the others want 00:09:07.28\00:09:09.79 to a godly nation not by mandating it, 00:09:09.82\00:09:12.71 not by restructuring the government, 00:09:12.74\00:09:14.58 not by taking down the wall of separation, 00:09:14.61\00:09:18.21 but by changing the hearts and minds 00:09:18.24\00:09:20.33 which is what I always hearken back to from the Vietnam War. 00:09:20.36\00:09:23.27 Changing the hearts and minds of people 00:09:23.30\00:09:25.45 so that they open to this thinking 00:09:25.48\00:09:27.62 and society will changes it result. 00:09:27.65\00:09:29.84 Move toward a, I hate to use it 00:09:29.87\00:09:33.58 but I always comes up a more tolerant, 00:09:33.61\00:09:35.23 open, forgiving, understanding more human society. 00:09:35.26\00:09:42.22 I find a lot of, a lot of hope in that statement 00:09:42.25\00:09:45.82 that we can affect what God does 00:09:45.85\00:09:49.24 and when He does it to a point of course, 00:09:49.27\00:09:51.43 but we can make that change. 00:09:51.46\00:09:53.22 Of course we can affect that, what about Hezekiah 00:09:53.25\00:09:55.68 God says to him you're gonna die 00:09:55.71\00:09:57.11 but Hezekiah turned his face to the wall 00:09:57.14\00:09:58.90 and wept and said no God, no, God changed his mind. 00:09:58.93\00:10:02.68 That empowers us, as Christians 00:10:02.71\00:10:04.26 that empowers us we can do something, 00:10:04.29\00:10:07.98 we don't have to sit back and just be victims 00:10:08.01\00:10:11.11 of what's happening here we can do something. 00:10:11.14\00:10:13.34 And probably we need to do a show on what can we do 00:10:13.37\00:10:15.88 and we can do a show on that if you'd like, 00:10:15.91\00:10:17.35 that sounds like a good idea. 00:10:17.38\00:10:18.71 But I know one thing that I want to do, 00:10:18.74\00:10:20.57 I want to start making a difference in my church, 00:10:20.60\00:10:24.25 I want to start making a difference in my life 00:10:24.28\00:10:26.74 and in my community. 00:10:26.77\00:10:28.14 I want to start being what God wants us to be 00:10:28.17\00:10:32.28 because, if we start being what God wants us to be 00:10:32.31\00:10:35.05 and enough of us do that, 00:10:35.08\00:10:37.35 God's gonna look down and like He did to Nineveh 00:10:37.38\00:10:39.09 and He says look, hey, they've changed. 00:10:39.12\00:10:42.14 They're not like they are when they used to be, 00:10:42.17\00:10:44.71 there are people there, there are groups there, 00:10:44.74\00:10:46.51 there are church's there, there are individuals there 00:10:46.54\00:10:48.53 who want to be what they should be. 00:10:48.56\00:10:52.37 They want to be My children. They want to live by My rules. 00:10:52.40\00:10:55.89 They want to make sure 00:10:55.92\00:10:57.14 that their lives are reflection of the way 00:10:57.17\00:10:59.29 it supposed to be and when that happens, 00:10:59.32\00:11:01.65 God says, I'm coming back again. 00:11:01.68\00:11:06.29 There's not enough time in our program 00:11:06.32\00:11:08.75 to discuss fully the ramifications 00:11:08.78\00:11:10.47 of being a preachers kid 00:11:10.50\00:11:12.63 but, the best I can say is I remember very well 00:11:12.66\00:11:15.20 as a young man myself flying 00:11:15.23\00:11:17.52 with my family into Kabul, Afghanistan 00:11:17.55\00:11:21.54 and an alien environment for westerner 00:11:21.57\00:11:24.17 and for a Christian 00:11:24.20\00:11:25.60 and we were met there by a very nice family. 00:11:25.63\00:11:29.11 They driven up from Pakistan 00:11:29.14\00:11:31.09 where the father was a Christian missionary, 00:11:31.12\00:11:34.16 they were two beautiful daughters 00:11:34.19\00:11:35.97 whose beauty interested me at the time. 00:11:36.00\00:11:38.62 We had a lovely couple of days there 00:11:38.65\00:11:40.75 going up to Kandahar and looking around 00:11:40.78\00:11:43.37 that ancient country and then we flew off 00:11:43.40\00:11:46.73 and a few months later in the middle of the night 00:11:46.76\00:11:49.98 that family was rouse from their bed 00:11:50.01\00:11:51.85 by banging at the door. 00:11:51.88\00:11:53.37 The father opened the door 00:11:53.40\00:11:54.58 in front of his two daughters and his wife, 00:11:54.61\00:11:56.60 he was killed savagely struck down 00:11:56.63\00:11:59.85 and murdered him in front of them. 00:11:59.88\00:12:02.12 Being a PK in the Middle East 00:12:02.15\00:12:03.91 as Charles have said is quite an assignment 00:12:03.94\00:12:07.97 and it brought with it great privileges 00:12:08.00\00:12:10.06 but also great risks and a great story. 00:12:10.09\00:12:13.74 And I've been so glad to talk to Charles 00:12:13.77\00:12:15.94 and to hear again how that influenced his thinking 00:12:15.97\00:12:19.39 and his views in this case on religious liberty. 00:12:19.42\00:12:24.94 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:24.97\00:12:28.32
