Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:03.00\00:00:04.73 Before the break with guest 00:00:04.76\00:00:06.77 Wintley Phipps we were listening to a song. 00:00:06.80\00:00:09.37 Yes. 00:00:09.40\00:00:10.43 Talking and it was a fantastic rendition of my tribute. 00:00:10.46\00:00:13.45 Thank you. 00:00:13.48\00:00:14.51 And you said a horrible president 00:00:14.54\00:00:17.35 why you've singing so wonderfully 00:00:17.38\00:00:18.71 what would we do in other shows. 00:00:18.74\00:00:19.77 Oh, yeah, well. 00:00:19.80\00:00:22.24 We'll have to get you the saying 00:00:22.27\00:00:23.37 a little bit of sorry. 00:00:23.40\00:00:25.28 The word that comes to mind but I just is horrible. 00:00:25.31\00:00:27.32 Yeah, do I. 00:00:27.35\00:00:30.18 But I know that religious liberty is central to 00:00:30.21\00:00:33.71 what you been doing all your life. 00:00:33.74\00:00:35.03 Even though you know 00:00:35.06\00:00:36.97 was just for a limited period 00:00:37.00\00:00:38.48 you were working directly with it. 00:00:38.51\00:00:39.72 Right. 00:00:39.75\00:00:40.78 But you have a vision of this and I appreciate 00:00:40.81\00:00:43.51 talking to you about this I see. 00:00:43.54\00:00:44.57 Yes. 00:00:44.60\00:00:45.63 I see, you link it to spirituality 00:00:45.66\00:00:47.42 which is necessary. 00:00:47.45\00:00:48.74 Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. 00:00:48.77\00:00:50.49 And as I was saying all my life 00:00:50.52\00:00:53.10 oh, I say all my life most of my life 00:00:53.13\00:00:55.22 since I was 16 years old 00:00:55.25\00:00:57.94 I have a felt a calling on my life 00:00:57.97\00:01:00.38 to speak truth to people of influence and power. 00:01:00.41\00:01:05.40 And I have been 00:01:05.43\00:01:07.13 and I've had the opportunity to minister to people 00:01:07.16\00:01:10.48 the highest echelons of government. 00:01:10.51\00:01:12.93 And when I was asked to takeover a little church 00:01:12.96\00:01:17.50 in Washington D.C. in 1985 00:01:17.53\00:01:21.53 I actually drove passed it because it was just a house. 00:01:21.56\00:01:25.16 Like me that sounds pretty recently. 00:01:25.19\00:01:27.07 Yeah. Three decades. 00:01:27.10\00:01:28.63 Yeah, I know isn't that amazing 00:01:28.66\00:01:30.22 and but when I got there 00:01:30.25\00:01:33.42 I looked down the street from where the church was 00:01:33.45\00:01:36.58 and I could see the capital of the United States. 00:01:36.61\00:01:39.30 The building and I realized 00:01:39.33\00:01:42.88 you know God is fulfilling everything 00:01:42.91\00:01:46.00 He told me as a little boy. 00:01:46.03\00:01:47.78 As a young teenager that He wanted me to prepare 00:01:47.81\00:01:51.63 to articulate the issues of religious freedom. 00:01:51.66\00:01:53.70 So here we have an Adventist church presence 00:01:53.73\00:01:58.16 on Capitol Hill there's so much we could do with that. 00:01:58.19\00:02:01.27 And so it was not unusual to on Sabbath morning 00:02:01.30\00:02:06.24 for example 00:02:06.27\00:02:07.31 to look and see members of government 00:02:07.34\00:02:10.65 cabinet people or secretary. 00:02:10.68\00:02:13.14 You know lot of them live in the apartments 00:02:13.17\00:02:14.90 just around the church. 00:02:14.93\00:02:16.00 Yeah and that happens too. 00:02:16.03\00:02:17.63 One Sabbath morning we looked up 00:02:17.66\00:02:19.48 and Justice Clarence Thomas 00:02:19.51\00:02:22.71 was sitting on a front row of the church 00:02:22.74\00:02:24.44 with his wife you know, 00:02:24.47\00:02:25.75 and so we have had those kinds of opportunities 00:02:25.78\00:02:29.46 and I think we need to continue to do that 00:02:29.49\00:02:32.46 because at the end of the day these people 00:02:32.49\00:02:34.59 who make those decisions they're human beings. 00:02:34.62\00:02:37.79 They're human beings with hearts 00:02:37.82\00:02:40.59 with minds that can influenced 00:02:40.62\00:02:43.26 we do know that the enemy is right there 00:02:43.29\00:02:47.99 whispering to them as well 00:02:48.02\00:02:49.70 and is seeking to influence their minds. 00:02:49.73\00:02:53.01 And so we need to be much more grateful than we are. 00:02:53.04\00:02:58.54 If we could only see behind the scenes 00:02:58.57\00:03:02.14 of what God has been doing to protect us 00:03:02.17\00:03:06.45 and to give us the blessing of freedom that we have enjoyed 00:03:06.48\00:03:10.18 it would blow our minds that God was so much involved. 00:03:10.21\00:03:13.37 I like the way you describe it because that's what I believe 00:03:13.40\00:03:15.65 it's a biblical model 00:03:15.68\00:03:17.19 and you know this Joseph and Moses with that matter 00:03:17.22\00:03:22.11 and different people 00:03:22.14\00:03:25.57 and Daniel placed in these highest places. 00:03:25.60\00:03:29.72 Absolutely. 00:03:29.75\00:03:30.78 Yes, you can they govern and you can talk politics 00:03:30.81\00:03:36.26 or at least talk about political developments 00:03:36.29\00:03:38.20 but I think the real value 00:03:38.23\00:03:39.63 what you're talking about is that 00:03:39.66\00:03:40.81 you can relate to them as another human being 00:03:40.84\00:03:44.00 and communicate to them what it is that makes you take 00:03:44.03\00:03:46.79 and they can understand what it is to be 00:03:46.82\00:03:48.62 a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. 00:03:48.65\00:03:49.68 Right. 00:03:49.71\00:03:50.74 And when in my situation when you have the blessing 00:03:50.77\00:03:55.85 to sing-- 00:03:55.88\00:03:58.05 Well, you got their attention. 00:03:58.08\00:03:59.37 You got their attention emotionally 00:03:59.40\00:04:01.37 and you speak to them on a very powerful level. 00:04:01.40\00:04:05.86 You know someone once said when you sing you pray twice. 00:04:05.89\00:04:10.77 In other words, you almost speaking 00:04:10.80\00:04:13.18 on more than just one wavelength. 00:04:13.21\00:04:15.19 And so many of these people are moved 00:04:15.22\00:04:19.45 and so consequently they listen to what you've said. 00:04:19.48\00:04:24.03 One of my mentors and I call him a mentor 00:04:24.06\00:04:27.43 because I think he is a dear friend 00:04:27.46\00:04:29.31 is Brother Clarence Hodges, and he-- 00:04:29.34\00:04:32.45 I worked with him when I first started 00:04:32.48\00:04:33.79 with Liberty Magazine. 00:04:33.82\00:04:34.85 Yes, yes and Clarence gave me as a young man 00:04:34.88\00:04:39.03 a little piece of advice that I carry with me 00:04:39.06\00:04:43.60 and I will carry with me as long as I live. 00:04:43.63\00:04:46.79 He said you know "it's hard to make friends 00:04:46.82\00:04:52.65 when you need them." 00:04:52.68\00:04:55.08 Yes, yeah. 00:04:55.11\00:04:56.28 You think about that poem. 00:04:56.31\00:04:58.40 It's hard to make friends when you need them. 00:04:58.43\00:05:02.00 You need to be cultivating relationships 00:05:02.03\00:05:05.36 long before you need them 00:05:05.39\00:05:08.05 and that's what ministry does for me. 00:05:08.08\00:05:10.75 And-- 00:05:10.78\00:05:12.17 And I think the best parts of what you're talking about 00:05:12.20\00:05:16.41 still continues 00:05:16.44\00:05:17.86 we do have through other individuals 00:05:17.89\00:05:20.86 we do have contacts and I think they're successful 00:05:20.89\00:05:23.11 as they keep it on that level. 00:05:23.14\00:05:24.66 Yes. 00:05:24.69\00:05:25.72 I'm uncomfortable with people 00:05:25.75\00:05:26.93 who think that we're useless lobbyist. 00:05:26.96\00:05:28.65 Yes, I understand. To Washington. 00:05:28.68\00:05:29.87 No, it can't be. 00:05:29.90\00:05:30.95 That works to elaborate degrade 00:05:30.98\00:05:32.49 or works to bid the degrade for some of other groups 00:05:32.52\00:05:34.59 that have huge lobbying staffs. 00:05:34.62\00:05:36.53 All right. 00:05:36.56\00:05:37.59 But we can't afford to get into that 00:05:37.62\00:05:38.99 and I think ultimately God doesn't work through that 00:05:39.02\00:05:41.93 particularly He works with what you're talking about. 00:05:41.96\00:05:44.09 One on one communicating your faith as you live it. 00:05:44.12\00:05:47.02 Yeah, and for example 00:05:47.05\00:05:48.64 when I started the Dream Academy 00:05:48.67\00:05:50.75 I realized I would need 00:05:50.78\00:05:52.18 millions and millions of dollars 00:05:52.21\00:05:54.81 to keep this all going. 00:05:54.84\00:05:56.11 Right now we raised hundreds of 00:05:56.14\00:05:58.97 we have to raise hundreds of thousand dollars a month 00:05:59.00\00:06:02.03 to keep this work going. 00:06:02.06\00:06:03.92 And I remember when I started out 00:06:03.95\00:06:05.45 I was it was a daunting 00:06:05.48\00:06:07.86 and I was knocking on doors on some of these doors 00:06:07.89\00:06:13.18 of some of these political friends 00:06:13.21\00:06:15.29 that I had to see if I can get support. 00:06:15.32\00:06:18.01 And I knocked on this senator's door 00:06:18.04\00:06:20.75 and I thought I get handshake 00:06:20.78\00:06:23.17 and the picture and the brush off, 00:06:23.20\00:06:24.94 you know, they do that so efficiently 00:06:24.97\00:06:28.13 but he and I were together for an hour and half 00:06:28.16\00:06:31.49 and because he turned out Lincoln, 00:06:31.52\00:06:34.10 to be one of the most prolific song writers 00:06:34.13\00:06:38.16 in the United States of America. 00:06:38.19\00:06:39.57 He's written for Gladys Knight, 00:06:39.60\00:06:40.94 he's written for Brooks and Dunn 00:06:40.97\00:06:42.33 his name is Senator Orrin Hatch. 00:06:42.36\00:06:44.49 Oh, I was going to guess someone else. 00:06:44.52\00:06:46.13 Yeah, so Orrin Hatch is an amazing song writer. 00:06:46.16\00:06:50.73 And we hit it off with the music 00:06:50.76\00:06:53.39 and I was there with him an hour and half 00:06:53.42\00:06:55.11 because he kept saying 00:06:55.14\00:06:56.22 hey, you got time for one more song. 00:06:56.25\00:06:57.66 Yeah and he already was he was pulling out songs 00:06:57.69\00:06:59.87 I mean he has written hundreds of hundreds 00:06:59.90\00:07:01.50 and I have actually recorded a whole album 00:07:01.53\00:07:04.09 of Senator Hatch's songs. 00:07:04.12\00:07:06.24 And then he said to me 00:07:06.27\00:07:09.29 who is helping you with your dream for the kids? 00:07:09.32\00:07:11.95 I said well, I have a few people here in there. 00:07:11.98\00:07:14.04 He said no, I'm gonna help you. 00:07:14.07\00:07:16.21 And he put it absolutely 00:07:16.24\00:07:18.87 he put together fundraising dinner 00:07:18.90\00:07:22.09 and he said you know I want to 00:07:22.12\00:07:24.23 I want this to be very bipartisan. 00:07:24.26\00:07:26.11 Who do you know on the democratic side 00:07:26.14\00:07:28.00 that will co-host you a dinner with me? 00:07:28.03\00:07:30.36 And I told him about my relationship 00:07:30.39\00:07:31.92 and my minister to the Clintons and President Clinton. 00:07:31.95\00:07:34.72 He said Mrs. Clinton just became a senator. 00:07:34.75\00:07:37.76 You better Ashcroft. 00:07:37.79\00:07:38.85 Yeah, yeah. In excess with-- 00:07:38.88\00:07:39.94 Yes, I do. So you had many options. 00:07:39.97\00:07:41.72 Yeah, yeah but he said-- 00:07:41.75\00:07:43.71 but you said he wanted be bipartisan 00:07:43.74\00:07:47.02 Ashcroft is also a republican. 00:07:47.05\00:07:48.73 Oh, really? Yes. 00:07:48.76\00:07:51.27 Oh, of course, sorry. Yeah, yeah right. 00:07:51.30\00:07:54.10 So he's political suitcase pretty thick sometimes. 00:07:54.13\00:07:58.40 So when he said I want 00:07:58.43\00:08:00.47 he said I'm gonna get Mrs. Clinton 00:08:00.50\00:08:02.13 to co-host your dinner with me. 00:08:02.16\00:08:03.71 So she agreed 00:08:03.74\00:08:05.92 and she went out and got all the democratic senators 00:08:05.95\00:08:09.25 to sign on to be a member of my dinner committee. 00:08:09.28\00:08:12.78 He went in and got all the Republican senators 00:08:12.81\00:08:14.94 to sign on to be a member of my first dinner committee, 00:08:14.97\00:08:17.34 my first dinner. 00:08:17.37\00:08:18.82 So my first dinner committee 00:08:18.85\00:08:20.24 read all 100 United States senators. 00:08:20.27\00:08:22.20 Wow. 00:08:22.23\00:08:23.26 So CNN came and did a report on my Dream Academy saying 00:08:23.29\00:08:27.91 what group is this we have never seen 00:08:27.94\00:08:29.57 100 United States senators agree? 00:08:29.60\00:08:31.62 I'm sure that's fairly unique. 00:08:31.65\00:08:32.95 Yeah, and it is. 00:08:32.98\00:08:34.57 And so that's again that's the power of ministry. 00:08:34.60\00:08:38.31 Here I ministered to the Clinton's 00:08:38.34\00:08:40.58 and ministered to Senator Hatch. 00:08:40.61\00:08:44.33 And I will say this 00:08:44.36\00:08:45.94 one day I had to sing at this big function in Washington 00:08:45.97\00:08:48.31 where President Clinton spoke. 00:08:48.34\00:08:50.27 And that's same night I had to rush across town 00:08:50.30\00:08:52.43 and sing at this big Republican function. 00:08:52.46\00:08:54.43 And when I got there I announced 00:08:54.46\00:08:56.28 that I had just come from singing 00:08:56.31\00:08:57.58 for the President of the United States 00:08:57.61\00:08:59.10 and there was this boo and rumbling 00:08:59.13\00:09:00.55 and went to the audience. 00:09:00.58\00:09:01.66 As I said wait a wait a minute. 00:09:01.69\00:09:02.94 I said I always go where people really need the Lord. 00:09:02.97\00:09:06.63 And there was this polite applause 00:09:06.66\00:09:08.43 and then I said and that's why I'm here. 00:09:08.46\00:09:11.73 So that's how I view it. 00:09:11.76\00:09:14.11 It's all ministry for me. 00:09:14.14\00:09:15.40 Yeah. 00:09:15.43\00:09:16.46 Yeah, well, it's incredible to listening to this 00:09:16.49\00:09:19.45 and in some ways I think you hold 00:09:19.48\00:09:23.06 you have to hold back 00:09:23.09\00:09:24.12 because you can't tell the most personal-- 00:09:24.15\00:09:26.35 That's true. 00:09:26.38\00:09:27.41 That's very true.
