Welcome back to Liberty Insider. 00:00:03.32\00:00:05.51 Before the break with guest Wintley Phipps 00:00:05.54\00:00:08.09 we were riffing on a little bit 00:00:08.12\00:00:09.26 about the principles of democracy 00:00:09.29\00:00:11.33 and religious liberty and so on 00:00:11.36\00:00:13.00 but I what really wanted to get on was how do we protect 00:00:13.03\00:00:16.53 this underlying principle of religious liberty 00:00:16.56\00:00:19.43 and it seems to me well, we can debate a lot here 00:00:19.46\00:00:22.12 and now the future security depends upon 00:00:22.15\00:00:25.05 training up a new generation that have it right. 00:00:25.08\00:00:28.46 Right, right, right. 00:00:28.49\00:00:29.75 And you might not have noticed recently in our religious 00:00:29.78\00:00:32.69 liberty activities of the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:00:32.72\00:00:35.55 there's been an initiative from the west coast 00:00:35.58\00:00:37.93 to establish a freedom classroom 00:00:37.96\00:00:41.22 bring young people on a tour of-- 00:00:41.25\00:00:43.66 These high sports spots and educate them in the principle. 00:00:43.69\00:00:46.69 But actually you're ahead of the game, 00:00:46.72\00:00:48.33 what have you been doing? 00:00:48.36\00:00:49.39 Sure. 00:00:49.42\00:00:50.45 Well, for me it started because on this train ride 00:00:50.48\00:00:55.18 where I saw this man I looked a little discouraged 00:00:55.21\00:00:57.37 and I said there's anybody sitting next to you 00:00:57.40\00:00:59.39 and it was Chuck Colson and he began to take me 00:00:59.42\00:01:01.94 into the prisons with him-- over 30 years ago 00:01:01.97\00:01:06.09 and I was shaken by what I saw. 00:01:06.12\00:01:09.26 I did not realized that one of every 00:01:09.29\00:01:11.20 three African American males, you know, men that look like me 00:01:11.23\00:01:15.21 and about sons, one of every three 00:01:15.24\00:01:18.68 between the ages of 18 and 30 are in prison today 00:01:18.71\00:01:22.27 in the United States or America-- 00:01:22.30\00:01:23.34 States or districts. Or should provide. 00:01:23.37\00:01:24.66 Especially by the way 00:01:24.69\00:01:26.23 we're talking about democratic principles. 00:01:26.26\00:01:28.49 Since in many states they lose the right 00:01:28.52\00:01:30.83 to practice that's a very dangerous. 00:01:30.86\00:01:32.90 Yeah, there are in the prison on probation 00:01:32.93\00:01:35.57 no parole supervised by the court system. 00:01:35.60\00:01:37.95 I'll give you another statistic that I came across recently 00:01:37.98\00:01:41.11 that really has me reeling 00:01:41.14\00:01:44.99 almost 20 African American males are murdered 00:01:45.02\00:01:51.86 every day in the United States of America. 00:01:51.89\00:01:56.54 Almost 20 are killed every single day of every year 00:01:56.57\00:02:03.74 in the United States of America. 00:02:03.77\00:02:05.11 If that was happening in Iraq or Afghanistan 00:02:05.14\00:02:09.51 where 20 American soldiers-- 00:02:09.54\00:02:11.96 for example if the 20 American soldiers were being killed 00:02:11.99\00:02:14.36 every day of every year there would be an outcry. 00:02:14.39\00:02:18.21 And so Chuck Colson really opened my eyes 00:02:18.24\00:02:22.85 because being coming from my faith tradition 00:02:22.88\00:02:26.46 I was a little sheltered. 00:02:26.49\00:02:29.09 And so he placed me on his board of directors 00:02:29.12\00:02:33.17 and I saw how you build a power church ministry 00:02:33.20\00:02:37.26 and how you run a not for profit with integrity. 00:02:37.29\00:02:40.62 And while on the board a very alarming statistics surface 00:02:40.65\00:02:44.76 we found out that almost 70% of all children in America 00:02:44.79\00:02:49.29 who end up in prison come from the children 00:02:49.32\00:02:52.06 of those who were in prison. 00:02:52.09\00:02:53.74 So I began to advocate why don't we build ministry 00:02:53.77\00:02:58.82 intervention for children whose parents are incarcerated? 00:02:58.85\00:03:02.83 Because if they're the most likely they go to prison 00:03:02.86\00:03:05.87 they're the ones who need the most help. 00:03:05.90\00:03:08.42 And I tell people when you have a board 00:03:08.45\00:03:12.19 and you have a wide-eyed idealist who is always hopping 00:03:12.22\00:03:16.19 on what needs to be done you know what you do, 00:03:16.22\00:03:18.09 you get an enabling action and you set him off to do it. 00:03:18.12\00:03:21.77 So they basically said look this is a calling for you 00:03:21.80\00:03:24.81 and if you wish to move in that direction 00:03:24.84\00:03:27.31 we'll help you get started 00:03:27.34\00:03:28.39 and they got me in my first employee, 00:03:28.42\00:03:30.70 my first office space and gave me the resources 00:03:30.73\00:03:34.31 to begin building what is now The Dream Academy. 00:03:34.34\00:03:37.81 And the Dream Academy is an organization, 00:03:37.84\00:03:40.54 a charity that brings tutoring 00:03:40.57\00:03:42.95 and mentoring to children of prisoners 00:03:42.98\00:03:45.78 and children falling behind in school. 00:03:45.81\00:03:48.01 I give you another statistics. 00:03:48.04\00:03:49.14 Now when does the, when does this take place, 00:03:49.17\00:03:52.65 obviously not during school hours. 00:03:52.68\00:03:54.69 After school. After school. 00:03:54.72\00:03:55.90 It is an after school program 00:03:55.93\00:03:57.87 and we get the kids at the most vulnerable hour 00:03:57.90\00:04:00.65 because most of the crime and most of the difficulty 00:04:00.68\00:04:03.46 happens between three and six in the afternoon 00:04:03.49\00:04:06.39 and so they come to us. 00:04:06.42\00:04:08.39 We help them to figure out 00:04:08.42\00:04:11.77 where they're not doing well in school 00:04:11.80\00:04:13.64 because it's critical for them to do well in school. 00:04:13.67\00:04:17.13 Lincoln by the age of 30, 60% of all black boys in America 00:04:17.16\00:04:23.08 60% who don't graduate from high school will be in prison. 00:04:23.11\00:04:26.95 I know it's incredible. I didn't know it was that hard. 00:04:26.98\00:04:29.14 Yes. It's shocking. 00:04:29.17\00:04:30.34 Yeah, and so-- 00:04:30.37\00:04:31.93 We're not running out of time 00:04:31.96\00:04:33.27 but I see our time running away. 00:04:33.30\00:04:34.89 Yes, yes. 00:04:34.92\00:04:36.40 In other programs you have been 00:04:36.43\00:04:37.52 kind enough to sing a song. 00:04:37.55\00:04:38.87 Absolutely and we happen to. 00:04:38.90\00:04:40.15 The picture you are painting demands 00:04:40.18\00:04:41.82 a arousing go for compassion and help. 00:04:41.85\00:04:46.04 Sure. You got a song we go this? 00:04:46.07\00:04:47.97 Absolutely, well, you know I'm thinking this beautiful hymn 00:04:48.00\00:04:51.71 "His Eye Is on the Sparrow." 00:04:51.74\00:04:53.71 Because these young people God has His eye on them 00:04:53.74\00:04:56.64 and I want them to know that. 00:04:56.67\00:04:58.15 Absolutely. 00:04:58.18\00:04:59.31 And so I will share this song. Looking forward to. 00:04:59.34\00:05:01.49 Why should I feel discouraged 00:05:18.40\00:05:26.22 Why should the shadows come 00:05:26.25\00:05:33.36 Why should my heart feel lonely 00:05:33.39\00:05:41.30 And long for heaven and home 00:05:41.33\00:05:49.04 When Jesus is my portion 00:05:49.07\00:05:55.91 My constant Friend is He 00:05:57.17\00:06:05.11 His eye is on the sparrow 00:06:05.14\00:06:11.53 And I know He's watching over me 00:06:13.23\00:06:20.57 His eye is on the sparrow 00:06:22.86\00:06:30.80 And I know He's watching over me 00:06:31.84\00:06:39.62 I sing because I'm happy 00:06:41.79\00:06:48.02 Yes, Lord, I sing because I'm free 00:06:48.05\00:06:55.86 For His eye is on the sparrow 00:06:57.59\00:07:05.28 And I know He's watching over me 00:07:07.71\00:07:14.23 His eye is on the sparrow 00:07:17.29\00:07:24.63 And I know He's watching over me 00:07:26.23\00:07:31.72 I know He's watching over me 00:07:31.75\00:07:36.10 I know He's watching over me 00:07:36.13\00:07:42.49 I sing because I'm happy 00:07:45.18\00:07:52.52 Yes, Lord, I sing because I'm free 00:07:52.55\00:07:59.73 For His eye is on the sparrow 00:08:02.41\00:08:09.57 And I know He's watching over me 00:08:13.34\00:08:20.55 His eye is on the sparrow 00:08:22.88\00:08:29.56 And I know He's watching over me 00:08:33.63\00:08:40.64 Yes, yes, 00:08:44.60\00:08:48.64 I know He's watching over me 00:08:48.67\00:08:56.34 Awful. Well, praise God. 00:09:15.74\00:09:17.82 Well, we have to believe that God's eyes 00:09:17.85\00:09:20.22 are not just on the sparrow it's on the young 00:09:20.25\00:09:22.29 these young men and women you're able to influence. 00:09:22.32\00:09:27.05 And I'm presuming that a big part 00:09:27.08\00:09:29.55 of what you're communicated to them 00:09:29.58\00:09:31.31 is not just general values the fact that God loves them 00:09:31.34\00:09:35.60 and cares for them and they've value. 00:09:35.63\00:09:37.28 Absolutely. 00:09:37.31\00:09:38.49 I would prove from what I have read 00:09:38.52\00:09:40.00 and see the lot of the problem with the prisoners themselves 00:09:40.03\00:09:42.55 and then it would have to be that children. 00:09:42.58\00:09:44.17 They devalued themselves. That's right. 00:09:44.20\00:09:46.13 And when somebody contributes to your sense of self-work 00:09:46.16\00:09:50.52 and self-esteemed not only do they not only do they give you 00:09:50.55\00:09:55.98 more than money could every buy but they also express 00:09:56.01\00:10:02.16 or they express the love of God 00:10:02.19\00:10:03.86 and the character of God to you. 00:10:03.89\00:10:05.22 Wonderful, wonderful. Yeah. 00:10:05.25\00:10:06.28 So you the program is going strong and continuing. 00:10:06.31\00:10:09.32 Yes, we always have need for more resources and funds 00:10:09.35\00:10:12.69 and I tell people God told me once 00:10:12.72\00:10:17.10 you've seen a sparrow with a worry line. 00:10:17.13\00:10:21.69 So no matter what's happening 00:10:21.72\00:10:23.53 don't worry God will take care of you. 00:10:23.56\00:10:25.59 And we ask that you'd pray for us and support us 00:10:25.62\00:10:28.01 as we help the young people with the Dream Academy. 00:10:28.04\00:10:32.95 One of the most moving and indeed the troubling scenes 00:10:32.98\00:10:37.37 in the New Testament is when Jesus was teaching 00:10:37.40\00:10:40.31 His disciples and others 00:10:40.34\00:10:41.98 and gathered around with some young children. 00:10:42.01\00:10:45.05 He said "Whoever causes one of these young people 00:10:45.08\00:10:49.14 to go astray, whoever subverts the innocence of a young person 00:10:49.17\00:10:54.02 better for him that a millstone be put around his neck." 00:10:54.05\00:10:57.96 In other words, it's very important that young people 00:10:57.99\00:11:01.80 be kept spiritually pure and they be protected. 00:11:01.83\00:11:04.90 It's very important that they be prepared 00:11:04.93\00:11:07.60 and husbanded toward the kingdom. 00:11:07.63\00:11:10.25 Our guest today has spoken about his Dream Academy 00:11:10.28\00:11:14.35 that's a very particular program that addresses 00:11:14.38\00:11:16.52 a very particular social problem in the United States 00:11:16.55\00:11:19.90 but actually the dream of Jesus is that 00:11:19.93\00:11:23.06 all young people be prepared for His kingdom 00:11:23.09\00:11:26.47 and the dream of our religious liberty endeavored has to be 00:11:26.50\00:11:30.00 that we can prepare young people to know what freedom is, 00:11:30.03\00:11:34.67 to live freedom and liberty in their lives 00:11:34.70\00:11:37.51 and that be prepared to exemplify that 00:11:37.54\00:11:40.41 in their community, in their nation 00:11:40.44\00:11:42.84 and thereby on a the trust and the importance 00:11:42.87\00:11:47.40 that God has placed upon their wellbeing. 00:11:47.43\00:11:50.96 For Liberty Insider this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:50.99\00:11:55.24
