Welcome back to the "Liberty Insider." 00:00:06.18\00:00:07.84 Before the break with guest Orlan Johnson 00:00:07.87\00:00:11.15 we sort of gone uphill down dale with-- 00:00:11.18\00:00:12.97 we were ending up talking about young people 00:00:13.00\00:00:15.79 and the challenge in North America. 00:00:15.82\00:00:17.81 Started off making an illusion to the Middle East 00:00:17.84\00:00:20.10 and I think there is a connection. 00:00:20.13\00:00:22.77 What happens in other parts of the world 00:00:22.80\00:00:24.44 you can easily say it's somewhere else on earth. 00:00:24.47\00:00:26.73 But I think young people sensibility 00:00:26.76\00:00:28.52 is affected by this. 00:00:28.55\00:00:29.76 I know that the-- the Jesus movement and, 00:00:29.79\00:00:33.37 and the agitation with the anti-war 00:00:33.40\00:00:35.61 agitation of young people in the Vietnam era 00:00:35.64\00:00:38.02 that was everything to do with 00:00:38.05\00:00:39.73 what was happening in the world, 00:00:39.76\00:00:40.91 they were unsettled. 00:00:40.94\00:00:42.50 And right now with Afghanistan winding down and in Iraq 00:00:42.53\00:00:47.58 which immediately called on the energy 00:00:47.61\00:00:50.87 of mostly young people. 00:00:50.90\00:00:52.06 Absolutely. 00:00:52.09\00:00:53.30 I think the continuing instability in the Middle East 00:00:53.33\00:00:56.10 and, and I'm trying to think how to characterize it 00:00:56.13\00:01:00.47 but fundamentalist Christians in the United States 00:01:00.50\00:01:03.66 I think they have done themselves 00:01:03.69\00:01:05.60 or the society as service by sort of emphasizing 00:01:05.63\00:01:09.24 the apocalyptic nature of the support of Israel. 00:01:09.27\00:01:12.32 So that's sort of gives the sense 00:01:12.35\00:01:13.76 that might go up in a big mushroom cloud again. 00:01:13.79\00:01:16.64 I think we somehow need to tell young people that 00:01:16.67\00:01:18.92 yes, these things are important but what's really important is 00:01:18.95\00:01:22.27 where you're spiritually and what you're scented on. 00:01:22.30\00:01:24.67 Right. 00:01:24.70\00:01:25.75 Now I think that's truly important 00:01:25.78\00:01:27.31 and its interesting when you even go to meet 00:01:27.34\00:01:29.84 at ambassador's offices now 00:01:29.87\00:01:31.57 and they bring contentions from their countries. 00:01:31.60\00:01:33.88 There's generally someone in the room that representing 00:01:33.91\00:01:36.84 a young contingent of some sort because they realize that 00:01:36.87\00:01:40.35 if you don't deal with issues that impact young people 00:01:40.38\00:01:42.97 and it's the same issues everywhere, unemployment, 00:01:43.00\00:01:45.32 you know, opportunities for education, 00:01:45.35\00:01:47.23 the ability to be trained. 00:01:47.26\00:01:49.27 You know, many of the terrible things that happen in life is 00:01:49.30\00:01:52.74 because of lack of opportunity to do anything else. 00:01:52.77\00:01:55.46 And if you can get young people to be involved, 00:01:55.49\00:01:58.25 I think that's critical and 00:01:58.28\00:02:00.08 but I think the point that you've made is, 00:02:00.11\00:02:01.94 what's the most important point for all young people. 00:02:01.97\00:02:04.33 I think about it with my own children 00:02:04.36\00:02:05.86 and try to pray about it for them regularly is that, 00:02:05.89\00:02:08.41 they develop their own personal relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:02:08.44\00:02:11.57 They won't be able to live their Christian life 00:02:11.60\00:02:14.49 through my experiences. 00:02:14.52\00:02:16.17 It has to be something where they develop 00:02:16.20\00:02:18.30 their own experiences and it will have to be 00:02:18.33\00:02:20.81 something that sometimes its parents difficult to know. 00:02:20.84\00:02:23.74 It will be independent of me. 00:02:23.77\00:02:25.44 It's now and then you can't save the situation. 00:02:25.47\00:02:29.59 This is a negative example 00:02:29.62\00:02:31.02 but it's really impressed on me. 00:02:31.05\00:02:33.23 As a parent I've got teenage-- 00:02:33.26\00:02:34.86 well, one teenager and one almost. 00:02:34.89\00:02:37.40 And you know, I think am I succeeding or failing, 00:02:37.43\00:02:40.40 you know, they are making the right choices. 00:02:40.43\00:02:42.35 They think about, Samuel 00:02:42.38\00:02:44.72 one of the most godly man in the Bible. 00:02:44.75\00:02:46.59 He sort of struck out with his kids 00:02:46.62\00:02:48.51 and on top of that Eli. 00:02:48.54\00:02:50.79 We tend to think of Eli is not doing great 00:02:50.82\00:02:53.04 but he was a godly man. 00:02:53.07\00:02:54.10 Yeah. Horrible sons. 00:02:54.13\00:02:55.42 Yeah. 00:02:55.45\00:02:56.73 But both of them I think were praying and hoping 00:02:56.76\00:02:59.37 and there's other cases in the Bible 00:02:59.40\00:03:01.07 where young people did answered to the challenge. 00:03:01.10\00:03:03.08 Absolutely. 00:03:03.11\00:03:04.14 And I do believe that young people have that idealism 00:03:04.17\00:03:07.33 that I spoke about. 00:03:07.36\00:03:10.12 But let's connect again to the Middle East 00:03:10.15\00:03:12.28 and I'm trying to join two very disparate things. 00:03:12.31\00:03:14.70 I've been startled looking at those headlines 00:03:14.73\00:03:18.04 we were talking about a week or so ago 00:03:18.07\00:03:21.15 now as we film this to see images of Pope Francis 00:03:21.18\00:03:25.83 in the Middle East, best time for him 00:03:25.86\00:03:28.80 is predicative too back John Paul 00:03:28.83\00:03:31.59 finished his pontificate by literal pilgrims 00:03:31.62\00:03:34.89 to the Middle East leaning on a staff 00:03:34.92\00:03:36.84 and I've mentioned on this program 00:03:36.87\00:03:41.37 but very telling to me that John Paul, 00:03:41.40\00:03:45.01 before he went to Jerusalem stopped in Ramallah 00:03:45.04\00:03:48.19 had that meeting with Arafat and they signed 00:03:48.22\00:03:52.17 an actual agreement that Jerusalem 00:03:52.20\00:03:55.35 couldn't be settled without being involved. 00:03:55.38\00:03:56.77 So I know that religious powers 00:03:56.80\00:03:58.87 are very much involved in this political conflict there. 00:03:58.90\00:04:02.18 Absolutely. 00:04:02.21\00:04:03.24 So to see Francis there at the Wailing Wall, 00:04:03.27\00:04:05.94 to see him the dividing wall, 00:04:05.97\00:04:08.67 the security wall at a memorial. 00:04:08.70\00:04:10.91 What did you make off all of that? 00:04:10.94\00:04:11.99 Well, you know-- Does that mean anything. 00:04:12.02\00:04:14.22 Or is it over rights for the Catholic Church? 00:04:14.25\00:04:16.48 Well, you know, I think, 00:04:16.51\00:04:17.54 from the Catholic Church's standpoint, 00:04:17.57\00:04:19.28 the one thing that I've always thought 00:04:19.31\00:04:20.55 they have done a good job of-- is to create an environment 00:04:20.58\00:04:24.61 where they can always been seen 00:04:24.64\00:04:26.06 and always be in the midst of things. 00:04:26.09\00:04:27.83 And this probably no better what I would call 00:04:27.86\00:04:31.23 headline in the world than, you know, 00:04:31.26\00:04:33.64 you were helping to break a peace in the Middle East. 00:04:33.67\00:04:36.46 So for Francis to say, I'd like to get 00:04:36.49\00:04:38.78 the Palestinians and Israel's together 00:04:38.81\00:04:41.06 and to sit down and to talk 00:04:41.09\00:04:42.78 and to come to some point of peace. 00:04:42.81\00:04:45.82 In reality to have someone in that position, 00:04:45.85\00:04:49.13 at the level to in anyway be able to claim 00:04:49.16\00:04:52.22 to be part of the peace process, 00:04:52.25\00:04:54.27 I think that and of it itself whether you want to say, 00:04:54.30\00:04:56.77 it's really what the church there wants to do 00:04:56.80\00:04:58.86 or it's propaganda or whatever it is 00:04:58.89\00:05:01.23 I think it causes people to be talking about you 00:05:01.26\00:05:03.78 and I think that's part of 00:05:03.81\00:05:05.49 what I think the overall objective is. 00:05:05.52\00:05:07.28 And you know, I wrote something about this the other day 00:05:07.31\00:05:09.11 and we got to be honest and fair 00:05:09.14\00:05:11.55 that on the simplest level it's admirable. 00:05:11.58\00:05:13.58 Yeah. 00:05:13.61\00:05:14.80 Who can say it's a bad thing for this particular pope to be 00:05:14.83\00:05:18.72 wanting to make peace. 00:05:18.75\00:05:22.37 From a historical protestant point of view 00:05:22.40\00:05:25.02 it's sort of can be ominous because it's a reminder of 00:05:25.05\00:05:28.66 when the Roman Catholic Church was a power broker 00:05:28.69\00:05:32.07 not because they were a facilitative 00:05:32.10\00:05:34.51 but they were the authority, they demanded that the kings 00:05:34.54\00:05:38.65 and the rulers do what they say. 00:05:38.68\00:05:41.10 And you know, it's not a good dynamic. 00:05:41.13\00:05:44.03 We're not there now. Right. 00:05:44.06\00:05:45.73 But it just tells me that things can shift. 00:05:45.76\00:05:47.55 But, yes, I really admire this pope and his initiatives, 00:05:47.58\00:05:51.64 so I think it's good. 00:05:51.67\00:05:52.72 Yeah. I think it's good. 00:05:52.75\00:05:54.02 I admire the initiatives 00:05:54.05\00:05:55.37 but I think it also begs the question as to, you know, 00:05:55.40\00:05:59.07 what we're doing and also being clear on, 00:05:59.10\00:06:01.84 sometimes when there is this cry of unity 00:06:01.87\00:06:04.00 and we should all be on accord 00:06:04.03\00:06:05.81 that you also still have to be balanced in that approach 00:06:05.84\00:06:09.18 because if this world were to every "get unified" 00:06:09.21\00:06:13.14 in the name of religion, I don't think they would be 00:06:13.17\00:06:15.41 going to church on Sabbath, that we recognized the day 00:06:15.44\00:06:18.51 and that's why we still have to be always vigilant 00:06:18.54\00:06:21.70 and always in my opinion working constantly 00:06:21.73\00:06:25.35 to remind people about religious liberties 00:06:25.38\00:06:27.35 and what we really believe. 00:06:27.38\00:06:28.49 Well, in some ways that we could have 00:06:28.52\00:06:30.30 a whole program on this it was trendy as long as 00:06:30.33\00:06:35.28 30, 40 years ago for the Christian world 00:06:35.31\00:06:38.92 and the World Council of Churches led the way on that 00:06:38.95\00:06:40.95 to be pursuing unity from a point of 00:06:40.98\00:06:44.79 everyone combining together 00:06:44.82\00:06:46.80 and sort of getting rid of the differences 00:06:46.83\00:06:49.72 and we unite around a common sort of a description. 00:06:49.75\00:06:53.04 I think that time is passed and I don't hear 00:06:53.07\00:06:57.18 especially out of Rome that sort of a call anymore. 00:06:57.21\00:07:00.18 The call now is under headship to acknowledge 00:07:00.21\00:07:03.49 the primacy of the power of Rome and the prerogatives, 00:07:03.52\00:07:08.82 and its spiritual role and that's not good either 00:07:08.85\00:07:11.56 because that goes back against to the reformation. 00:07:11.59\00:07:13.61 Yeah, yeah. 00:07:13.64\00:07:14.67 But unity, if it were to come on anything, 00:07:14.70\00:07:18.12 political and spiritual, 00:07:18.15\00:07:20.55 unity is not just come by our own feeling. 00:07:20.58\00:07:24.07 It either comes two ways. 00:07:24.10\00:07:25.54 That either you put away your beliefs 00:07:25.57\00:07:27.88 or you adopt contrary in emulative beliefs. 00:07:27.91\00:07:31.14 So we used to use the word, 00:07:31.17\00:07:33.25 no I've forgotten it, syncretism. 00:07:33.28\00:07:36.30 Syncretism in religious circles where you sort of mix 00:07:36.33\00:07:40.02 the opposites together and make a stew of 00:07:40.05\00:07:42.80 that's very dangerous. 00:07:42.83\00:07:44.16 Right. 00:07:44.19\00:07:45.50 And not likely to happen but where you 00:07:45.53\00:07:48.79 compromise your principles that's not good either. 00:07:48.82\00:07:50.87 So unity is great but unless it's qualified 00:07:50.90\00:07:54.28 it's either meaningless or dangerous. 00:07:54.31\00:07:56.47 I couldn't agree more and let's face it. 00:07:56.50\00:07:58.55 The Catholic Church is no different 00:07:58.58\00:08:00.12 than any other organization there 00:08:00.15\00:08:02.05 trying to figure out how to continue to have growth, 00:08:02.08\00:08:04.16 how to continue to be relevant, 00:08:04.19\00:08:05.99 how to continue to impact their young people and young adults 00:08:06.02\00:08:09.81 because they have had some issues that they have been 00:08:09.84\00:08:12.09 grabbling with, that they are trying to figure out 00:08:12.12\00:08:14.38 how to do a better job with it. 00:08:14.41\00:08:16.02 So it's, it's admirable and it's, in my opinion 00:08:16.05\00:08:19.92 the type of thing that is you know, 00:08:19.95\00:08:22.87 apple pie and you just really can't say 00:08:22.90\00:08:26.03 this is something wrong with it, 00:08:26.06\00:08:27.26 but we still have to always be cautious. 00:08:27.29\00:08:28.78 But it is not wrong. 00:08:28.81\00:08:30.13 It's a very telling movement 00:08:30.16\00:08:31.92 because its got historical analogs 00:08:31.95\00:08:35.45 that should remind us of what once was 00:08:35.48\00:08:37.55 and even some prophetic intimations of the world 00:08:37.58\00:08:42.15 moving towards as were saying, a false sort of a unity. 00:08:42.18\00:08:45.65 But as far as the actual event, amazing and we'll see if, 00:08:45.68\00:08:50.52 if this pope can succeed where president's failed 00:08:50.55\00:08:53.83 before, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and so 00:08:53.86\00:08:58.70 and they have all tried their best 00:08:58.73\00:09:00.75 and not much good is coming out of it 00:09:00.78\00:09:03.10 and along the way bizarre things. 00:09:03.13\00:09:05.48 Yasser Arafat as I remember got he peace prize 00:09:05.51\00:09:07.44 and what's that? 00:09:07.47\00:09:08.52 Nobel Peace Prize. 00:09:08.55\00:09:09.59 I think we as Christians are all aware 00:09:09.62\00:09:11.24 that we would love to see peace 00:09:11.27\00:09:13.20 and the cries of peace everywhere 00:09:13.23\00:09:14.82 but we know this world is probably gonna get into 00:09:14.85\00:09:17.67 a situation where it's gonna get a whole lot worse 00:09:17.70\00:09:20.13 before it gets a whole lot better 00:09:20.16\00:09:22.30 and which is one of the cries that we have to understand 00:09:22.33\00:09:25.04 on a worldwide basis, although we'd like 00:09:25.07\00:09:27.04 everything to be, you know, smooth and no problems 00:09:27.07\00:09:31.30 but it's just not realistically 00:09:31.33\00:09:33.17 where the prophecy is telling us we're gonna end up. 00:09:33.20\00:09:34.74 What does the prophecy says, when they say peace, peace, 00:09:34.77\00:09:36.44 sudden destruction. 00:09:36.47\00:09:37.61 So we shouldn't worry about apocalypse per say, 00:09:37.64\00:09:41.41 but not pursue false peace. 00:09:41.44\00:09:43.06 It should be the peace that passes 00:09:43.09\00:09:44.43 all understands that Christ brings. 00:09:44.46\00:09:46.37 One last thing and then I'll let you make a comment. 00:09:46.40\00:09:49.21 But I was taken, while as the pope 00:09:49.24\00:09:51.66 walked up into his plane. 00:09:51.69\00:09:52.75 Did you know this, he took the time to talk 00:09:52.78\00:09:54.59 to a young woman standing near the door of the plane 00:09:54.62\00:09:57.68 and that's what we need to do again. 00:09:57.71\00:09:59.27 Yeah. Let's involve our young people. 00:09:59.30\00:10:00.93 Well, I think our young people being involved is critical. 00:10:00.96\00:10:03.60 There's no other way that as a church 00:10:03.63\00:10:05.39 we can continue to grow. 00:10:05.42\00:10:07.04 If you don't have young people who on the forefront 00:10:07.07\00:10:09.79 and really making a difference in this world 00:10:09.82\00:10:11.71 it's gonna be very tough to remove forward. 00:10:11.74\00:10:13.82 So let's just get them involved and let religious liberty rain. 00:10:13.85\00:10:18.95 One of my weakness is reading books 00:10:18.98\00:10:21.85 in meetings or in places 00:10:21.88\00:10:23.31 where I should be paying more attention. 00:10:23.34\00:10:25.31 Perhaps I've gotten a few more straight "A" 00:10:25.34\00:10:27.96 if I had been careful of that back in college. 00:10:27.99\00:10:30.93 But recently in a meeting I was reading a hardcover 00:10:30.96\00:10:34.32 pictorial history of the Middle Ages 00:10:34.35\00:10:37.29 and so a picture that startled me. 00:10:37.32\00:10:39.57 It was a painting from that era that showed 00:10:39.60\00:10:42.33 one of the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire 00:10:42.36\00:10:44.90 lying on the ground on his back, 00:10:44.93\00:10:47.66 in a position very much like a dog 00:10:47.69\00:10:49.97 and subservient position at the feet 00:10:50.00\00:10:52.64 of one of the popes of Rome. 00:10:52.67\00:10:54.66 I never knew that such objects of vision was required. 00:10:54.69\00:10:59.69 Recently when Pope Francis who has shown great personal 00:10:59.72\00:11:04.85 energy and compassion lent his office to 00:11:04.88\00:11:09.17 perhaps bringing peace in the Middle East 00:11:09.20\00:11:11.77 and invited both of the leaders of the Palestinian and Israeli 00:11:11.80\00:11:16.71 factions to his office, to his private quarters 00:11:16.74\00:11:20.77 to discuss peace I thought yes, 00:11:20.80\00:11:23.48 this is a possibility for peace. 00:11:23.51\00:11:25.39 And yes, perhaps this is history repeating itself, 00:11:25.42\00:11:29.02 acknowledging a religious force again. 00:11:29.05\00:11:34.41 For Liberty Insider this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:34.44\00:11:38.01
