Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.13\00:00:08.57 Before the break with guest Orlan Johnson, 00:00:08.60\00:00:11.65 we were riffing on about 00:00:11.68\00:00:13.28 some of the problems initially with Islam, 00:00:13.31\00:00:15.45 but it's really a greater problem with Christianity, 00:00:15.48\00:00:18.88 not so much that the Christians are radical 00:00:18.91\00:00:21.11 or extreme or revolutionary, the reverse. 00:00:21.14\00:00:25.22 Too many Christians are milk toast, 00:00:25.25\00:00:27.56 quiet or even worse than that, perhaps going to church 00:00:27.59\00:00:32.39 and then living totally different during the week. 00:00:32.42\00:00:35.90 Yeah, I think to me 00:00:35.93\00:00:37.03 one of the most important things 00:00:37.06\00:00:38.23 that we can do is really just understand, 00:00:38.26\00:00:41.04 you can't hide your Christianity. 00:00:41.07\00:00:42.39 I think you have to be upfront about it 00:00:42.42\00:00:44.31 because if people know that you are supposedly a Christian 00:00:44.34\00:00:47.65 and you don't act that way 00:00:47.68\00:00:48.82 or you are supposedly Seventh-day Adventist, 00:00:48.85\00:00:50.27 you don't act that way. 00:00:50.30\00:00:51.33 Then what it does in my opinion, 00:00:51.36\00:00:52.94 it ends up confusing them to understand 00:00:52.97\00:00:55.34 what your real principles are, 00:00:55.37\00:00:56.86 I mean there's nothing worse 00:00:56.89\00:00:57.95 than living an unprincipled life, 00:00:57.98\00:00:59.72 whether you go in one direction or another. 00:00:59.75\00:01:02.14 You know, and I think that's why the Bible talks about, 00:01:02.17\00:01:04.61 you know, lukewarm is about as bad as it gets. 00:01:04.64\00:01:08.35 The important things that we do in the North American Division, 00:01:08.38\00:01:11.33 mostly at the union level 00:01:11.36\00:01:12.64 but it often comes up to the General Conference 00:01:12.67\00:01:14.62 or NAD level is defending Seventh-day Adventists 00:01:14.65\00:01:18.25 in the workplace. 00:01:18.28\00:01:19.46 And I'm sure you've noticed it, 00:01:19.49\00:01:21.92 well before you came into this present job, 00:01:21.95\00:01:24.72 that the people that are living their life 00:01:24.75\00:01:27.36 and making a clear witness through everything 00:01:27.39\00:01:30.46 they do in the workplace. 00:01:30.49\00:01:31.95 When a conflict arises, 00:01:31.98\00:01:33.32 where they're asked to work on a Saturday 00:01:33.35\00:01:35.86 or something like that. 00:01:35.89\00:01:38.54 Then there's no question, it's well known. 00:01:38.57\00:01:40.14 'Cause these persons, they've got integrity 00:01:40.17\00:01:42.07 and they're more likely to get it. 00:01:42.10\00:01:43.72 It's when they are hidden Adventist 00:01:43.75\00:01:46.53 or, I remember one case, 00:01:46.56\00:01:48.89 the employer discovered that person on Saturday, 00:01:48.92\00:01:51.65 I think it was a local race track, 00:01:51.68\00:01:53.55 well, he says why should 00:01:53.58\00:01:54.61 I give him Sabbath off, you know. 00:01:54.64\00:01:55.69 That's tough part. 00:01:55.72\00:01:57.32 You want your prisoners 00:01:57.35\00:01:58.92 and your members to live the consistent life, 00:01:58.95\00:02:01.69 and I think one of the strongest things 00:02:01.72\00:02:03.38 we do in the Adventist church 00:02:03.41\00:02:04.44 is to protect the Sabbath accommodation, 00:02:04.47\00:02:06.46 I think we've done that extremely well over the years 00:02:06.49\00:02:09.74 and I think that's probably given us more of a recognition 00:02:09.77\00:02:13.49 as a church than anything else and-- 00:02:13.52\00:02:16.30 And it's really interesting because specially nowadays 00:02:16.33\00:02:19.57 you have Adventists that are in church every week, 00:02:19.60\00:02:21.65 but they seem to come from all different walks of life 00:02:21.68\00:02:24.87 and the ability to tell them, that we would like 00:02:24.90\00:02:27.25 for you to continue to live a consistent life 00:02:27.28\00:02:29.28 and then but also understand that when you fall off, 00:02:29.31\00:02:31.84 that Christ still loves you and you can come back. 00:02:31.87\00:02:34.43 Trying to find their appropriate balance 00:02:34.46\00:02:36.27 is always been a tough part of the job there. 00:02:36.30\00:02:38.72 Well, it's a balance of witness that you give me an opening, 00:02:38.75\00:02:43.11 that will link nicely with what we opened the program, 00:02:43.14\00:02:45.83 was talking about fanatical extremist of another religion 00:02:45.86\00:02:50.56 and of course religious liberty 00:02:50.59\00:02:51.69 we defend the right of anyone to believe anything. 00:02:51.72\00:02:53.71 Absolutely. 00:02:53.74\00:02:54.80 There is truth and error but for religious freedom, 00:02:54.83\00:02:56.85 it's the right to follow your conscience, 00:02:56.88\00:02:59.92 but how do we as Christians 00:02:59.95\00:03:05.15 and particularly a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:03:05.18\00:03:06.83 how do we rejuvenate not just ourselves 00:03:06.86\00:03:09.65 but the whole-- a group thing, 00:03:09.68\00:03:13.59 it's like we become active and vibrant 00:03:13.62\00:03:16.63 and, you know, not people 00:03:16.66\00:03:18.18 that will grab school girls out of a environment like that, 00:03:18.21\00:03:22.43 but people that make a difference in society 00:03:22.46\00:03:24.10 that we are catalyst for change. 00:03:24.13\00:03:26.77 I mean, the word that comes to mind is revival. 00:03:26.80\00:03:28.57 How do we get there? 00:03:28.60\00:03:29.83 I think part of what we have to-- in my opinion do 00:03:29.86\00:03:32.78 is go back to the basics of understanding that, 00:03:32.81\00:03:35.95 trying to make an impact in your own concentric circle 00:03:35.98\00:03:38.83 wherever it is it's key. 00:03:38.86\00:03:40.72 I think sometimes we as Adventist think that 00:03:40.75\00:03:43.54 unless you're making an impact 00:03:43.57\00:03:44.94 at the highest level as possible 00:03:44.97\00:03:46.65 that it's really not worth your time and energy, 00:03:46.68\00:03:49.18 but I think it goes back to the grassroots 00:03:49.21\00:03:51.65 of touching your community first, 00:03:51.68\00:03:53.41 touching your neighbors first, 00:03:53.44\00:03:54.75 you know making an impact there and when you do that, 00:03:54.78\00:03:58.05 I think that's where the revival begins. 00:03:58.08\00:04:00.15 I don't think it begins with a huge 00:04:00.18\00:04:02.02 ten and thousands of people. 00:04:02.05\00:04:03.69 I think it begins by your neighbor 00:04:03.72\00:04:05.49 seeing you every Sabbath go to church 00:04:05.52\00:04:07.82 and one day wondering, 00:04:07.85\00:04:09.11 you know, what are you doing? 00:04:09.14\00:04:10.23 And then you being able to tell. 00:04:10.26\00:04:12.29 I'll tell you a perfect example. 00:04:12.32\00:04:13.58 When I was out of the country one time, 00:04:13.61\00:04:15.91 I had a flood in my house 00:04:15.94\00:04:17.67 and I was not able to get there. 00:04:17.70\00:04:19.36 And I called some friends of mine from church, 00:04:19.39\00:04:21.21 and they were able to come by and they kind of, 00:04:21.24\00:04:23.59 you know, got out the carpet called groups 00:04:23.62\00:04:26.22 that would come in and help out 00:04:26.25\00:04:27.78 and I had this big bin outside, we were throwing away things. 00:04:27.81\00:04:30.76 And one day somebody drove up 00:04:30.79\00:04:32.41 while I was throwing something out 00:04:32.44\00:04:33.63 and said hey, I saw some people 00:04:33.66\00:04:35.37 at your house a couple of days ago. 00:04:35.40\00:04:36.96 Who were those guys? People watched them. 00:04:36.99\00:04:38.51 Yeah, and I said, well, they were 00:04:38.54\00:04:39.96 just guys in my church, and he said 00:04:39.99\00:04:41.99 and they were here on Super Bowl Sunday 00:04:42.02\00:04:44.00 to help to clean out your basement 00:04:44.03\00:04:46.28 because of this, and I said yeah, 00:04:46.31\00:04:47.97 and he said what church do you go to? 00:04:48.00\00:04:50.33 And it caused us to have a little bit of a conversation 00:04:50.36\00:04:53.68 and I wasn't looking for this individual, 00:04:53.71\00:04:55.59 I didn't get up that morning with the idea, 00:04:55.62\00:04:57.39 I'm gonna throw out some trash and witness. 00:04:57.42\00:04:59.46 But sometimes just living a life 00:04:59.49\00:05:01.46 where you are able to be able 00:05:01.49\00:05:03.07 to just give somebody something, 00:05:03.10\00:05:05.63 and it caused me to think about it little bit, 00:05:05.66\00:05:07.10 definitely to me is where revival really begins. 00:05:07.13\00:05:10.64 Absolutely, so it's-- I wish I could remember a hymn 00:05:10.67\00:05:13.76 but a musical song comes-- Cinderella comes to mind 00:05:13.79\00:05:17.66 in my own little corner of the world. 00:05:17.69\00:05:19.35 Yeah. Yeah. 00:05:19.38\00:05:20.76 Joe Lowes Dean actually has a nice phrase. 00:05:20.79\00:05:23.24 We say just bloom where you plant it. 00:05:23.27\00:05:25.39 Stop worrying about being able to make a difference in places 00:05:25.42\00:05:28.24 where you don't exist, 00:05:28.27\00:05:29.54 but if you can make an impact in whatever circle you're in, 00:05:29.57\00:05:32.41 to me that's when revival begins. 00:05:32.44\00:05:33.99 Well, I'll turn it on its head. 00:05:34.02\00:05:36.94 Sometimes with the religious liberty or public affairs, 00:05:36.97\00:05:39.74 and religious liberty week meet and contact movers 00:05:39.77\00:05:43.13 and shakers in the government or in society. 00:05:43.16\00:05:46.03 And we think that's good and it's better than not. 00:05:46.06\00:05:48.62 But it seems to me that, 00:05:48.65\00:05:49.68 that moment will be more significant 00:05:49.71\00:05:51.67 if they have an image from word of mouth 00:05:51.70\00:05:55.16 and perhaps their own life come in contact with Adventist. 00:05:55.19\00:05:58.79 So just for some functionary to shake their hand, 00:05:58.82\00:06:01.83 you know, I'm this and that and the other in the church. 00:06:01.86\00:06:04.14 They're doing that all day long. 00:06:04.17\00:06:05.89 But for to really resonate 00:06:05.92\00:06:07.29 there has to be something back of it. 00:06:07.32\00:06:09.50 Something positive. Yeah. 00:06:09.53\00:06:11.03 I mean, you know in the name of Adventism in my opinion 00:06:11.06\00:06:15.08 it starts out with being Christian. 00:06:15.11\00:06:16.46 You have to be Christ like first. 00:06:16.49\00:06:18.17 Because once you can impact somebody 00:06:18.20\00:06:20.49 with the love of Jesus Christ, 00:06:20.52\00:06:22.12 then I think they want to ask you more about the life 00:06:22.15\00:06:24.53 that you live and want to know about your doctrines, 00:06:24.56\00:06:27.00 want to know about your health message, 00:06:27.03\00:06:28.44 want to know about things of that nature. 00:06:28.47\00:06:30.17 And that's why to me it's still important 00:06:30.20\00:06:32.44 to give someone Jesus 00:06:32.47\00:06:34.82 and not because you think you're gonna save them, 00:06:34.85\00:06:36.83 but because maybe one day 00:06:36.86\00:06:38.09 you may need that person to give Jesus back to you. 00:06:38.12\00:06:40.43 And I think what's the plus 00:06:40.46\00:06:41.49 with their religious liberty messages 00:06:41.52\00:06:42.80 that I laid it to you before, 00:06:42.83\00:06:43.92 we are not or shouldn't be just pushing 00:06:43.95\00:06:46.91 for religious liberty to help ourselves. 00:06:46.94\00:06:48.19 Absolutely not. 00:06:48.22\00:06:49.25 To make life easier for our operation, 00:06:49.28\00:06:51.49 or our institutions, that is a byproduct 00:06:51.52\00:06:54.78 but we should be promoting all people. 00:06:54.81\00:06:58.30 And I'm really happy to see that 00:06:58.33\00:06:59.70 we're doing more of that in our church. 00:06:59.73\00:07:01.63 We're doing it at the NAD where we're actually 00:07:01.66\00:07:04.25 sending in briefs and support for example, 00:07:04.28\00:07:07.14 you know, a young lady who... 00:07:07.17\00:07:08.54 'Amicus Brief' friend of the court is here. 00:07:08.57\00:07:09.95 Yeah, that she could not, 00:07:09.98\00:07:11.24 you know, where you have job, on the job 00:07:11.27\00:07:13.28 because of certain, you know, 00:07:13.31\00:07:15.29 style issues and things of that nature 00:07:15.32\00:07:17.22 and although that has nothing to do 00:07:17.25\00:07:18.48 with Seventh-day Adventism, 00:07:18.51\00:07:19.79 we as a church have come and said that's wrong. 00:07:19.82\00:07:21.63 Well, it has a lot to do with their principles. 00:07:21.66\00:07:23.22 Absolutely. Yeah. 00:07:23.25\00:07:24.88 And that to me is really the key. 00:07:24.91\00:07:26.87 Coming in and being consistent with who you are, 00:07:26.90\00:07:29.76 it's not about simply being self serving, 00:07:29.79\00:07:31.79 but it's a lot more just doing what Christ would do. 00:07:31.82\00:07:34.43 When you think about when He was on this earth, 00:07:34.46\00:07:36.55 He'd mingled with everyone. 00:07:36.58\00:07:37.81 He put Himself in a position 00:07:37.84\00:07:39.18 where people would question Him, 00:07:39.21\00:07:40.60 but that's what life is really all about. 00:07:40.63\00:07:43.12 Didn't it says that He went about seeking people's good? 00:07:43.15\00:07:46.39 That's true. 00:07:46.42\00:07:48.18 And I think that was the power of Jesus 00:07:48.21\00:07:50.50 that someone could inherently recognize 00:07:50.53\00:07:52.18 this person's here to help me. 00:07:52.21\00:07:54.28 And we've got to be careful, 00:07:54.31\00:07:55.39 we don't condemn people by our godliness. 00:07:55.42\00:07:59.91 Which we don't usually have. Right. 00:07:59.94\00:08:02.69 But I think we can help 00:08:02.72\00:08:03.80 and religious liberty has been a great help 00:08:03.83\00:08:06.14 and I think more and more 00:08:06.17\00:08:07.59 with some of their contacts in Washington and so on. 00:08:07.62\00:08:09.90 We're seen as people that have an interest way 00:08:09.93\00:08:13.49 outside our sectarian organizational 00:08:13.52\00:08:17.24 and it's-- that's good. 00:08:17.27\00:08:18.67 And I know you're making a strong lead on that already. 00:08:18.70\00:08:20.60 Oh, I think we're moving in the right direction. 00:08:20.63\00:08:22.87 I think we have a strong team 00:08:22.90\00:08:24.40 that really is looking forward to making a difference. 00:08:24.43\00:08:27.28 But I believe that if we can just simply go out 00:08:27.31\00:08:30.04 and be consistent and be Christian 00:08:30.07\00:08:32.87 in everything that we do, 00:08:32.90\00:08:34.50 I think everything else starts to take care of itself. 00:08:34.53\00:08:36.68 I mean, I'd love that anybody would say, 00:08:36.71\00:08:38.90 oh, Seventh-day Adventist, 00:08:38.93\00:08:40.02 I mean, we know about our health message, 00:08:40.05\00:08:42.19 we know about the Sabbath 00:08:42.22\00:08:43.30 but it'd be great if someone says, 00:08:43.33\00:08:44.36 you know, those are the kindest people 00:08:44.39\00:08:45.65 I've ever met. 00:08:45.68\00:08:46.71 And in case with that love that you impact people 00:08:46.74\00:08:49.23 that they really want to know more about who you are 00:08:49.26\00:08:52.19 and the God that you serve 00:08:52.22\00:08:53.53 because when they first meet you, 00:08:53.56\00:08:55.79 it doesn't hit you. 00:08:55.82\00:08:56.87 It reminds me of when Paul, 00:08:56.90\00:08:58.63 you know, when he came out of his blindness, 00:08:58.66\00:09:00.44 he saw Ananias. 00:09:00.47\00:09:02.68 First person that he sees- He didn't want to be there. 00:09:02.71\00:09:04.24 Yeah. He didn't want to be there. 00:09:04.27\00:09:05.87 But suppose Ananias went about the wrong way 00:09:05.90\00:09:08.45 and the first interaction 00:09:08.48\00:09:09.82 Paul had with Christianity was a bad one. 00:09:09.85\00:09:12.10 Who knows where things would have gone? 00:09:12.13\00:09:13.16 Yeah, it's true. 00:09:13.19\00:09:14.22 So it's interesting to think about your life 00:09:14.25\00:09:16.80 as treating somebody supposedly 00:09:16.83\00:09:19.35 you may be the only Christian they ever see. 00:09:19.38\00:09:21.91 And what impact have you made in their life 00:09:21.94\00:09:24.16 to want to draw them close to the God. 00:09:24.19\00:09:25.80 Yeah. 00:09:25.83\00:09:26.95 It's a heavy responsibility we all have that sometimes 00:09:26.98\00:09:30.77 we might be the only face of truth that they will see. 00:09:30.80\00:09:34.57 And the truth exists a little beyond this. 00:09:34.60\00:09:37.61 But how we present that is vital. 00:09:37.64\00:09:39.85 And unfortunately back to the beginning 00:09:39.88\00:09:41.93 I think Islam is being poorly represented at the moment. 00:09:41.96\00:09:46.06 And we need to somehow help it if anything, 00:09:46.09\00:09:50.89 the word comes to mind, give it a reformation. 00:09:50.92\00:09:53.07 Well, I think in terms of reformation 00:09:53.10\00:09:55.50 that any extremist views are always gonna be 00:09:55.53\00:09:58.88 considered to be something 00:09:58.91\00:10:00.01 that's taking people in the wrong direction. 00:10:00.04\00:10:02.08 It's so important as we as Christians understand 00:10:02.11\00:10:04.53 that it's never gonna be about us, 00:10:04.56\00:10:06.27 that it's always gonna be about God. 00:10:06.30\00:10:08.13 And if we can get to the point in our lives 00:10:08.16\00:10:09.93 where we realize it's about elevating Him 00:10:09.96\00:10:12.02 and drawing more men and women close to Him. 00:10:12.05\00:10:14.57 That to me is the powerful aspect of religious liberty 00:10:14.60\00:10:17.46 we can engage in and hopefully as Christians 00:10:17.49\00:10:19.61 we'll continue to do so. 00:10:19.64\00:10:23.19 There can be no greater loss for a parent 00:10:23.22\00:10:26.71 than to lose their child. 00:10:26.74\00:10:28.37 So it's no mystery that much of the world 00:10:28.40\00:10:30.99 is stirred over the very public abduction in Nigeria 00:10:31.02\00:10:37.37 of 2 or 300 young women from their school 00:10:37.40\00:10:40.88 to parts unknown 00:10:40.91\00:10:42.33 but it's indicated by the leader of Boko Haram, 00:10:42.36\00:10:45.44 the Islamist revolutionary organization there 00:10:45.47\00:10:49.30 that has taken them, 00:10:49.33\00:10:50.50 they may well be sold into slavery 00:10:50.53\00:10:53.26 or sold into forced marriages and along with that 00:10:53.29\00:10:57.99 as many of those girls were Christian 00:10:58.02\00:11:00.72 forced into a new religion, in this case, Islam. 00:11:00.75\00:11:03.93 We live in a strange world where in this case Islam 00:11:03.96\00:11:07.64 but different times and places, other religions have decided 00:11:07.67\00:11:11.74 that they can force someone in their community 00:11:11.77\00:11:15.38 or another community nearby, forced them to believing 00:11:15.41\00:11:19.94 as they believe at the edge of the sword, 00:11:19.97\00:11:22.17 it used to be that Islam symbol was conversion by the sword, 00:11:22.20\00:11:26.86 not by sword's loud clashing, 00:11:26.89\00:11:28.91 but by deeds of love and mercy says the hymn. 00:11:28.94\00:11:32.17 We too should be working toward deeds of love and mercy. 00:11:32.20\00:11:37.36 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:37.39\00:11:40.79
