Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.68\00:00:07.56 Before the break with guest Orlan Johnson, 00:00:07.59\00:00:09.95 we were again reminiscing about Europe and the Huganas 00:00:09.98\00:00:15.64 and it all derive from our recent 00:00:15.67\00:00:19.15 Great Controversy bus tour of Europe. 00:00:19.18\00:00:22.25 Now you were along, this was-- 00:00:22.28\00:00:25.46 you've been to Europe before. 00:00:25.49\00:00:26.82 You studied at Collonges in France. 00:00:26.85\00:00:29.79 I did. 00:00:29.82\00:00:30.93 I spend my first year of college in Collonges, 00:00:30.96\00:00:33.37 and which was a little bit unusual 00:00:33.40\00:00:34.85 because most students go in their junior year 00:00:34.88\00:00:36.95 but I've taken a few years of French in high school 00:00:36.98\00:00:39.66 and decided if I didn't go next year, 00:00:39.69\00:00:40.92 I probably never will. 00:00:40.95\00:00:41.98 You probably found all the friends around Europe, 00:00:42.01\00:00:43.27 and that was almost like the Collonges experience, 00:00:43.30\00:00:44.64 so the new built experience. 00:00:44.67\00:00:45.89 It was a little bit different, 00:00:45.92\00:00:47.07 I was explaining to people on the bus back in 1980-1981. 00:00:47.10\00:00:51.66 We actually used to just hitchhike everywhere we went. 00:00:51.69\00:00:54.01 That seems worst. Yeah. 00:00:54.04\00:00:55.25 We used to just, you know, they call it fair to stop 00:00:55.28\00:00:58.02 and you would just go out and you-- 00:00:58.05\00:01:00.02 and we traveled all over Europe. 00:01:00.05\00:01:02.22 Your own children, would you recommend them to do that? 00:01:02.25\00:01:04.55 Oh, absolutely not, and I've teased my mother 00:01:04.58\00:01:06.96 couple of times saying that 00:01:06.99\00:01:08.08 when they send me to Europe that year, 00:01:08.11\00:01:09.92 and I thought it was one of the most 00:01:09.95\00:01:11.07 irresponsible things 00:01:11.10\00:01:12.40 they've ever done as being parents but... 00:01:12.43\00:01:14.94 My sister went to New Walden 00:01:14.97\00:01:16.44 and I used to tell my parents the same thing. 00:01:16.47\00:01:20.00 But that was the standard pattern for students then, 00:01:20.03\00:01:23.67 but I think that gave you a wonderful background... 00:01:23.70\00:01:26.02 Oh, absolutely. 00:01:26.05\00:01:27.08 Not just the knowledge of Europe 00:01:27.11\00:01:28.40 but of Adventism and... 00:01:28.43\00:01:30.31 That was quite powerful 00:01:30.34\00:01:32.13 and to be there nestled on the silhouette of mountains 00:01:32.16\00:01:35.12 and that's why when we were driving 00:01:35.15\00:01:36.47 around the Great Controversy Tour, 00:01:36.50\00:01:38.54 I would always look up at the mountains 00:01:38.57\00:01:40.12 and it reminded of Collonges 00:01:40.15\00:01:41.55 because I lived in la-Rouge zone 00:01:41.58\00:01:43.20 in the boy's dormitory 00:01:43.23\00:01:44.28 and right behind you just saw these 00:01:44.31\00:01:45.97 great silhouette of mountains behind us 00:01:46.00\00:01:48.44 and you were just kind of in this little valley 00:01:48.47\00:01:50.16 and you could actually see the Jet d'Eau of Geneva 00:01:50.19\00:01:52.90 from the dormitory I was in, quite a place.. 00:01:52.93\00:01:54.41 Mountain is the wrong term, 00:01:54.44\00:01:55.67 it's really a vertical cliff face. 00:01:55.70\00:01:57.56 It really is. 00:01:57.59\00:01:58.94 A solid rock face and you probably know the height 00:01:58.97\00:02:01.52 but I would say it's at least 3,000 vertical feet of stone. 00:02:01.55\00:02:05.75 Well, you know, it was unbelievable 00:02:05.78\00:02:08.12 as there were lot of students, 00:02:08.15\00:02:09.23 they used to climb the face of that mountain 00:02:09.26\00:02:11.05 while we were there, some to their parallel. 00:02:11.08\00:02:13.41 I made a resolution I'm never going to send my son there 00:02:13.44\00:02:15.79 because they were saying that no students that have fallen 00:02:15.82\00:02:20.23 but I think but young people now and then fall off. 00:02:20.26\00:02:25.05 I know my son, he would want to stand on the edge 00:02:25.08\00:02:28.06 with this toes curled over and then brag to someone else 00:02:28.09\00:02:31.33 that he could jump off the tower. 00:02:31.36\00:02:34.21 No, but there was a nice little winding road 00:02:34.24\00:02:36.29 you could take a safe route up there as well, 00:02:36.32\00:02:38.22 so we did that quite a bit, 00:02:38.25\00:02:39.56 but there were some that actually 00:02:39.59\00:02:40.82 they scaled the face of the mountain 00:02:40.85\00:02:42.27 it went straight up, so it was really incredible. 00:02:42.30\00:02:46.44 The school area is really throwing several generations 00:02:46.47\00:02:50.15 of Adventists ministers and missionaries. 00:02:50.18\00:02:53.18 Absolutely. 00:02:53.21\00:02:54.24 I know that French missionaries in particular 00:02:54.27\00:02:56.72 have gone through many parts of Africa 00:02:56.75\00:02:59.74 and the Middle East said it, you know, 00:02:59.77\00:03:04.98 I'm sure that gave you a sense of 00:03:05.01\00:03:07.23 as a Seventh-day Adventist 00:03:07.26\00:03:08.50 that we have a mission and a goal to reach out 00:03:08.53\00:03:10.41 and to do something in the world realm. 00:03:10.44\00:03:11.78 It was probably one of the first times 00:03:11.81\00:03:13.28 I had been in an institution where I was around 00:03:13.31\00:03:16.01 so many international individuals. 00:03:16.04\00:03:17.86 I mean we had probably every imaginable language 00:03:17.89\00:03:21.08 spoken there on campus. 00:03:21.11\00:03:22.72 Actually Dr. Ganune and I actually met there. 00:03:22.75\00:03:26.02 Now he is an associate of Dr. John Graz 00:03:26.05\00:03:28.84 in the General Conference Religious Liberty Department. 00:03:28.87\00:03:29.90 Absolutely. 00:03:29.93\00:03:31.19 And when I came to the NAD, I actually had not seen him, 00:03:31.22\00:03:34.59 since I was at Collonges 30 years before 00:03:34.62\00:03:37.22 and I can still remember meeting with a lot of friends 00:03:37.25\00:03:40.29 from Africa, my roommate who is from Cameroon, 00:03:40.32\00:03:45.12 which is very interesting 00:03:45.15\00:03:46.20 we're in the Great Controversy tour, 00:03:46.23\00:03:47.59 I was talking to Dr. Warri 00:03:47.62\00:03:49.10 and he actually knew this individual 00:03:49.13\00:03:50.55 who I haven't seen in years and told me where he was, 00:03:50.58\00:03:52.65 I'm looking to reach out to him as well 00:03:52.68\00:03:54.23 but Collonges was just an exciting experience. 00:03:54.26\00:03:56.69 We had probably about 20 Americans 00:03:56.72\00:03:58.38 over there to time I was there and still keeping contact 00:03:58.41\00:04:01.65 with a lot of those individuals today, 00:04:01.68\00:04:03.18 so it was a great experience. 00:04:03.21\00:04:04.28 So you got locked in early on the church infrastructure. 00:04:04.31\00:04:07.34 Now your mother has been a church school teacher for 00:04:07.37\00:04:11.11 and principal for many years. 00:04:11.14\00:04:12.85 Absolutely. 00:04:12.88\00:04:13.99 But you-- something didn't take early on, 00:04:14.02\00:04:16.49 you didn't become a school teacher. 00:04:16.52\00:04:18.49 You didn't become a minister. 00:04:18.52\00:04:19.88 You didn't become a missionary. 00:04:19.91\00:04:21.23 What did you become? 00:04:21.26\00:04:22.58 I actually probably became what most people way back 00:04:22.61\00:04:26.67 in the day thought Adventist should never become 00:04:26.70\00:04:28.47 and I was an attorney. 00:04:28.50\00:04:29.73 Yeah. 00:04:29.76\00:04:30.98 And I've practiced law for about 25 years 00:04:31.01\00:04:33.77 and actually my father and I used to always think 00:04:33.80\00:04:36.25 my mother worked for the church, 00:04:36.28\00:04:37.52 I would say for almost 40 years, 00:04:37.55\00:04:39.90 teacher, principal, superintend of schools, 00:04:39.93\00:04:42.65 risk management, 00:04:42.68\00:04:43.79 I mean I was probably seen 00:04:43.82\00:04:45.30 every aspect of the church growing up possible, 00:04:45.33\00:04:47.36 but thought I would never find myself 00:04:47.39\00:04:49.12 anywhere near her position for the church. 00:04:49.15\00:04:50.95 When you say thought, you were determined that you wouldn't? 00:04:50.98\00:04:53.41 Well, I, you know, sometimes you try never to say never, 00:04:53.44\00:04:56.23 but in my mind it was not on the bucket list, 00:04:56.26\00:04:58.29 I'd put it that way. 00:04:58.32\00:04:59.46 You know, we haven't rehearsed this. 00:04:59.49\00:05:01.37 I'm sure our viewers know it's not rehearsed, 00:05:01.40\00:05:03.77 but I didn't know, 00:05:03.80\00:05:05.80 but in some ways I can sense echoes of myself. 00:05:05.83\00:05:08.68 My father was a church leader in the temperance department 00:05:08.71\00:05:12.88 and as a kid I used to trail along with him 00:05:12.91\00:05:15.57 and you know, I somehow get into debates 00:05:15.60\00:05:18.93 with different church leaders and evangelists 00:05:18.96\00:05:20.58 and they invariably tapped me on the head. 00:05:20.61\00:05:22.19 You gonna be a pastor like your father. 00:05:22.22\00:05:24.36 And I had nothing against being a pastor 00:05:24.39\00:05:26.31 but I didn't want to be a clone of my father. 00:05:26.34\00:05:28.83 You want to be yourself. Right. Right. 00:05:28.86\00:05:30.41 So he used to say there was so anything but anything but. 00:05:30.44\00:05:33.75 So I was sort of you know like-- 00:05:33.78\00:05:38.11 I was running away from it. 00:05:38.14\00:05:39.84 And it's only a incredible chain of circumstances 00:05:39.87\00:05:42.42 that brought me really back to where my father 00:05:42.45\00:05:44.83 would have loved me at the beginning. 00:05:44.86\00:05:46.19 Well, you know, and I think that's real good point 00:05:46.22\00:05:48.33 because sometimes you think that you know 00:05:48.36\00:05:50.82 where you're gonna end up 00:05:50.85\00:05:52.28 and through very unusual stream of events 00:05:52.31\00:05:55.09 you find out that the Lord is actually preparing you 00:05:55.12\00:05:57.63 for something completely different 00:05:57.66\00:05:59.77 and in my mind the uniqueness at the time, 00:05:59.80\00:06:02.08 I didn't have any family members 00:06:02.11\00:06:03.53 that were lawyers, and I had a lot of cousins 00:06:03.56\00:06:06.40 and family members that were in the field of medicine. 00:06:06.43\00:06:08.74 So I actually was kind of branching out on my own 00:06:08.77\00:06:11.32 and it was a great opportunity to kind of like 00:06:11.35\00:06:14.37 carve a new niche in our family per se 00:06:14.40\00:06:17.03 and it was, you know, 00:06:17.06\00:06:19.55 one of the most exciting things. 00:06:19.58\00:06:20.78 Yeah. Absolutely. Absolutely. 00:06:20.81\00:06:22.50 Lawyers know all about prerequisites. 00:06:22.53\00:06:23.57 That's right, that's right. 00:06:23.60\00:06:24.92 I mean today, you know, there are few other 00:06:24.95\00:06:27.91 family members that are lawyers. 00:06:27.94\00:06:29.48 My daughter is thinking about going to law school 00:06:29.51\00:06:31.72 although I've tried to talk her out of it, 00:06:31.75\00:06:33.24 but that's probably where she is going to end up, 00:06:33.27\00:06:35.18 but I think it's been exciting opportunity 00:06:35.21\00:06:38.08 but the opportunity to be here with NAD 00:06:38.11\00:06:40.83 is exciting as well and I think... 00:06:40.86\00:06:42.41 Well, of course with religious liberty 00:06:42.44\00:06:44.36 legal background is more than passing significance. 00:06:44.39\00:06:48.14 It helps. 00:06:48.17\00:06:49.30 We're dealing a lot with the law. 00:06:49.33\00:06:50.70 It helps and it allows you to get through 00:06:50.73\00:06:53.84 what I would call the type of thinking that 00:06:53.87\00:06:56.52 you can probably use to be helpful 00:06:56.55\00:06:58.85 in this particular area, the logic, 00:06:58.88\00:07:01.49 the understanding precedent, the ability to kind of look 00:07:01.52\00:07:05.98 its statues on the four corners and do interpretations 00:07:06.01\00:07:09.03 and so it can be helpful to the church as well. 00:07:09.06\00:07:10.92 Now before your pre-law studies 00:07:10.95\00:07:12.90 did you focused in on history? 00:07:12.93\00:07:14.44 You know, not really. 00:07:14.47\00:07:15.53 I know, history is one of the not prerequisites 00:07:15.56\00:07:17.80 but it's pretty much a usual base for lawyering. 00:07:17.83\00:07:21.58 I actually ended up 00:07:21.61\00:07:22.69 being an economics major and it's a real... 00:07:22.72\00:07:24.56 That's not the usual combination. 00:07:24.59\00:07:26.12 No, but my combination ended up that way 00:07:26.15\00:07:28.68 because after my first year at Collonges 00:07:28.71\00:07:30.97 and I transferred to Andrews University 00:07:31.00\00:07:33.17 and I was wondering 00:07:33.20\00:07:34.36 what degree can I finish in three years from now, 00:07:34.39\00:07:36.63 and economics actually kind of fit the bill 00:07:36.66\00:07:38.86 and l liked the idea. 00:07:38.89\00:07:40.07 We took a few classes and that's how I became 00:07:40.10\00:07:42.59 an econ major with the French minor 00:07:42.62\00:07:44.53 and that's how it all came together 00:07:44.56\00:07:46.26 and from there I found myself in law school. 00:07:46.29\00:07:48.49 It's interesting events that I toyed with not the-- 00:07:48.52\00:07:50.54 I never thought I would take economics per se 00:07:50.57\00:07:53.01 but in college I particularly took cost accounting 00:07:53.04\00:07:56.77 and macro economics, micro economics 00:07:56.80\00:07:58.76 that had nothing to do with my study 00:07:58.79\00:08:00.32 but I was interested in it too. 00:08:00.35\00:08:01.40 Oh, it's good stuff. 00:08:01.43\00:08:02.46 And it really helped you to kind of have a better idea of 00:08:02.49\00:08:04.95 kind of how the world works 00:08:04.98\00:08:06.10 from a macro and micro standpoint, 00:08:06.13\00:08:07.50 I've enjoyed it. 00:08:07.53\00:08:08.56 And we don't have a lot of time 00:08:08.59\00:08:09.64 but if you could tell it quickly, 00:08:09.67\00:08:11.20 there is a very interesting story 00:08:11.23\00:08:13.86 not too many years ago 00:08:13.89\00:08:15.14 in the aftermath of the international 00:08:15.17\00:08:18.92 and US economic collapse, 00:08:18.95\00:08:20.80 one of the newses story was the Madoff scandal. 00:08:20.83\00:08:24.94 Yeah. Yeah. 00:08:24.97\00:08:26.00 Lot of money went vest on that, 00:08:26.03\00:08:27.28 but you helped pull some of it back, didn't you? 00:08:27.31\00:08:28.85 Well, you know, I was really blessed. 00:08:28.88\00:08:30.56 I had an opportunity to be appointed by President Obama 00:08:30.59\00:08:33.17 to be the chairman of 00:08:33.20\00:08:34.23 the Securities Investor Protection Corporation 00:08:34.26\00:08:36.07 which took the lead on all of the issues 00:08:36.10\00:08:38.02 that are related to failed brokerage firms 00:08:38.05\00:08:40.59 and when I came on board in 2009, 00:08:40.62\00:08:42.98 one of the big issues was the Bernie Madoff scandal 00:08:43.01\00:08:45.93 and part of the work we were doing was going out 00:08:45.96\00:08:48.49 and trying to see we could recover funds and... 00:08:48.52\00:08:50.53 And billions have gone missing. 00:08:50.56\00:08:51.83 Billions have gone missing. 00:08:51.86\00:08:52.98 Probably out of pocket maybe in an area of 00:08:53.01\00:08:55.03 $25 billion for individuals 00:08:55.06\00:08:57.83 and we were very, very fortunate, 00:08:57.86\00:09:00.16 we worked very hard and we were looking for 00:09:00.19\00:09:02.98 a lot of ways to really get funds back 00:09:03.01\00:09:05.42 and we found one individual that we pursued heavily 00:09:05.45\00:09:08.60 and we were fortunate that eventually 00:09:08.63\00:09:11.43 they decided to come to an agreement to give back funds 00:09:11.46\00:09:14.42 and we got back $7.3 billion from one individual. 00:09:14.45\00:09:19.28 Maybe I've to tell you a story of a little firm. 00:09:19.31\00:09:21.59 But there was a woman that her husband had died. 00:09:21.62\00:09:23.81 Her husband had died. 00:09:23.84\00:09:25.06 But she was in possession of all of this money, 00:09:25.09\00:09:27.39 not really ill-gotten from her perspective 00:09:27.42\00:09:29.95 but it was money 00:09:29.98\00:09:31.25 that the people have been defrauded off. 00:09:31.28\00:09:33.11 Yeah. 00:09:33.14\00:09:34.18 And you spoke to her and initially she resisted, 00:09:34.21\00:09:36.79 then she called you up and said that 00:09:36.82\00:09:38.09 she's sort of a social prior in her circle 00:09:38.12\00:09:40.30 and she decided to give it back. 00:09:40.33\00:09:41.80 And that's what had happened, 00:09:41.83\00:09:43.33 you know, the interesting thing about Madoff, 00:09:43.36\00:09:45.39 he ended up taking only money from close friends. 00:09:45.42\00:09:47.89 And so, all of a sudden she was in a situation 00:09:47.92\00:09:51.43 where people in her synagogue and people in her neighborhood, 00:09:51.46\00:09:54.52 they had all been harm 00:09:54.55\00:09:55.89 so you couldn't really move around as freely 00:09:55.92\00:09:59.01 and she decided, you know, what? 00:09:59.04\00:10:00.99 I'm little too old for this, you know, 00:10:01.02\00:10:02.90 and plus I've other-- 00:10:02.93\00:10:04.07 Yeah. It must be nice. 00:10:04.10\00:10:05.27 Yeah, I mean and to have the ability to give back 00:10:05.30\00:10:09.48 $7.3 billion out of your bank account is something that 00:10:09.51\00:10:14.45 I could not even conceptualize to be honest 00:10:14.48\00:10:17.02 and to see it happen 00:10:17.05\00:10:18.61 and to make those funds available to the Madoff victims 00:10:18.64\00:10:21.96 was a tremendous victory for all. 00:10:21.99\00:10:23.72 And let's, isn't the largest ever recovery that you've made 00:10:23.75\00:10:26.16 Largest single US asset forfeiture 00:10:26.19\00:10:29.02 in the United States history, which is really incredible. 00:10:29.05\00:10:31.82 So you've got a real notch in your legal belt 00:10:31.85\00:10:34.80 and the memory they have put on the wall. 00:10:34.83\00:10:36.44 Well, it was probably some of the most exciting time 00:10:36.47\00:10:38.78 that I've had 00:10:38.81\00:10:40.04 and the opportunity to really be able to kind of focus on 00:10:40.07\00:10:43.76 how you can get involved in something that can help people. 00:10:43.79\00:10:46.53 What I've really found that was 00:10:46.56\00:10:48.22 when you go out and try to do the work of the Lord 00:10:48.25\00:10:50.51 and hopefully put it in His hands. 00:10:50.54\00:10:52.33 I try to find out how can I be useful 00:10:52.36\00:10:54.90 but then you find out you know what, 00:10:54.93\00:10:56.38 I just got to put these in the hands of the Lord, 00:10:56.41\00:10:58.22 because through God anything can happen. 00:10:58.25\00:11:00.57 The Madoff situation was something 00:11:00.60\00:11:02.30 that worked very, very well for us, 00:11:02.33\00:11:04.46 but at the end of the day 00:11:04.49\00:11:05.63 it's really about helping people 00:11:05.66\00:11:07.11 and it's the same thing with religious liberty, 00:11:07.14\00:11:08.75 go out, help others. 00:11:08.78\00:11:09.96 Do what you can. 00:11:09.99\00:11:11.02 Don't alleviate yourself, 00:11:11.05\00:11:12.16 just alleviate God wherever you can. 00:11:12.19\00:11:16.32 When I was kid, I was taken by many fairytales 00:11:16.35\00:11:19.91 and I remember there is a story of a pencil upper tower 00:11:19.94\00:11:23.15 and I think a hair was used as a bit of rescue mechanism. 00:11:23.18\00:11:26.63 You know, towers can feature in a lot of stories, 00:11:26.66\00:11:29.85 there is a sign of strength 00:11:29.88\00:11:32.08 that is we heard on this program, 00:11:32.11\00:11:34.53 there's a true story of a Mary Durand, Marie Durand, 00:11:34.56\00:11:39.73 who for 38 years not 20 some years, 38 years 00:11:39.76\00:11:45.74 was kept in the Tower of Constance 00:11:45.77\00:11:47.61 because of her faith, because of her family 00:11:47.64\00:11:50.75 holding the same faith 00:11:50.78\00:11:52.28 and yet that woman there all those years 00:11:52.31\00:11:55.04 living as a prisoner under not just restriction 00:11:55.07\00:11:58.38 but demeaning circumstances 00:11:58.41\00:12:00.15 living in a communal prison in an enclosed tower 00:12:00.18\00:12:03.04 with guards watching every minute of the day, 00:12:03.07\00:12:05.51 could scratch into the stone and work 00:12:05.54\00:12:08.93 that I saw clearly as I looked at it recently. 00:12:08.96\00:12:12.09 Resist. 00:12:12.12\00:12:13.95 Resist those that would change your faith. 00:12:13.98\00:12:16.79 Resist those that would intimidate you 00:12:16.82\00:12:19.29 into living differently. 00:12:19.32\00:12:20.67 Resist as the Bible says, resist the devil 00:12:20.70\00:12:24.51 and he will flee from you. 00:12:24.54\00:12:27.32 There's a great challenge from those people of faith 00:12:27.35\00:12:29.86 of previous years. 00:12:29.89\00:12:33.64 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:33.67\00:12:37.05
