Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:05.51\00:00:07.39 Before the break with guest Orlan Johnson, 00:00:07.42\00:00:10.31 we were reminiscing about, 00:00:10.34\00:00:12.68 you know, really a life changing experience 00:00:12.71\00:00:15.58 with 22 other religious liberty leaders 00:00:15.61\00:00:18.67 and a few relatives and interested people, 00:00:18.70\00:00:23.68 but by and large we were people involved in religious liberty 00:00:23.71\00:00:27.04 touring through three countries of western Europe, 00:00:27.07\00:00:31.57 but looking particularly for evidence of faith 00:00:31.60\00:00:34.33 and persecution I guess, 00:00:34.36\00:00:36.25 but persecution showed the faith 00:00:36.28\00:00:38.35 and you'd mentioned the highlight for you 00:00:38.38\00:00:40.73 was that second Sabbath in... 00:00:40.76\00:00:43.31 Yeah, the church of-- Museum of the Desert. 00:00:43.34\00:00:45.92 Museum of the Desert. Yes. 00:00:45.95\00:00:47.81 And this was Albigenses as I remember. 00:00:47.84\00:00:49.51 Absolutely. 00:00:49.54\00:00:50.74 Which is another phase of the reform movement 00:00:50.77\00:00:53.31 that was represented in Northern Italy 00:00:53.34\00:00:55.36 by the Walt Denzy's. 00:00:55.39\00:00:58.00 This was in southern France not to far from Montpellier. 00:00:58.03\00:01:02.96 Yeah. 00:01:02.99\00:01:04.18 So, tell me more about those because... 00:01:04.21\00:01:05.86 Well.... It was a rich experience... 00:01:05.89\00:01:08.02 It really was and when I first heard 00:01:08.05\00:01:10.66 we gonna be having church under the trees, 00:01:10.69\00:01:12.62 I didn't know exactly what that meant. 00:01:12.65\00:01:13.81 Yeah. 00:01:13.84\00:01:14.87 And actually it was probably my wife's favorite as well 00:01:14.90\00:01:17.14 and when we got there and to see just the-- 00:01:17.17\00:01:20.35 just the set up, it just felt like 00:01:20.38\00:01:22.35 you were in this kind of Shangri-La environment. 00:01:22.38\00:01:25.62 You know, the breeze was blowing nicely. 00:01:25.65\00:01:27.91 All the chairs were set up, 00:01:27.94\00:01:29.67 but then that was juxtaposed against having a little burst 00:01:29.70\00:01:32.56 with the radio board in there, 00:01:32.59\00:01:34.99 so you kind of had a chance to take a look 00:01:35.02\00:01:36.69 at the past and the present, 00:01:36.72\00:01:38.81 all combined into one and just the idea 00:01:38.84\00:01:41.87 that the people they were just so happy to have us there. 00:01:41.90\00:01:44.26 And there were, how many would you think maybe 80, 90? 00:01:44.29\00:01:48.11 I think about 80 or 90 were there. 00:01:48.14\00:01:49.71 A French seventh-day Adventist from several churches 00:01:49.74\00:01:52.70 who'd gather together to hear 00:01:52.73\00:01:55.73 some of the religious liberty leaders, 00:01:55.76\00:01:57.73 but to share food. 00:01:57.76\00:02:00.28 The food was something... Yeah. 00:02:00.31\00:02:01.82 We had what I would call the French version of potluck 00:02:01.85\00:02:05.97 which I thought was quite interesting. 00:02:06.00\00:02:08.18 We just had all kinds of things to eat just quiches 00:02:08.21\00:02:12.22 from every walk of life you could imagine. 00:02:12.25\00:02:14.45 Yeah, it wasn't quite your bean stew 00:02:14.48\00:02:16.73 and your scalloped potato. 00:02:16.76\00:02:18.96 No, it's very different and but what I also enjoy 00:02:18.99\00:02:22.37 just the salad and the fruits everything was so fresh, 00:02:22.40\00:02:25.02 and I was speaking with one of the ladies there 00:02:25.05\00:02:27.16 and she said, "Well, did you enjoy the cucumber." 00:02:27.19\00:02:28.78 I said, "They were fabulous." 00:02:28.81\00:02:29.85 She said, "Well, I grew all of them in my backyard." 00:02:29.88\00:02:32.48 And, you know, you just had these view 00:02:32.51\00:02:34.34 of just a different lifestyle completely. 00:02:34.37\00:02:37.22 It was idyllic. 00:02:37.25\00:02:38.35 And of course made more idyllic 00:02:38.38\00:02:40.74 by the fact that it was a Seventh-day Sabbath 00:02:40.77\00:02:42.94 and it was a sacred moment 00:02:42.97\00:02:44.55 and I'm sure like me you're impressed 00:02:44.58\00:02:46.25 that first it seemed sort of odd, 00:02:46.28\00:02:48.42 they had a one of a better word, a raised lectern. 00:02:48.45\00:02:51.99 Yeah. 00:02:52.02\00:02:53.05 That Dr. Graz stood up there with Gilbert Wari, 00:02:53.08\00:02:57.22 division president from one of the African divisions. 00:02:57.25\00:03:00.05 The eastern division. He used to preach. 00:03:00.08\00:03:01.26 Yeah. 00:03:01.29\00:03:03.06 And wasn't really meant for two people 00:03:03.09\00:03:05.09 but they stood up so high and I'm thinking sort of odd, 00:03:05.12\00:03:07.36 you know, a little group 00:03:07.39\00:03:08.42 but then they said that this was an actual lectern 00:03:08.45\00:03:10.74 I think that would have been used. 00:03:10.77\00:03:11.88 Absolutely. 00:03:11.91\00:03:13.39 Some hundreds of years ago 00:03:13.42\00:03:14.68 by people worshipping in the same place. 00:03:14.71\00:03:16.98 Well, you know, it was the old vintage soup box look. 00:03:17.01\00:03:19.45 Yeah. 00:03:19.48\00:03:20.51 Where they were much higher than us 00:03:20.54\00:03:22.35 and actually I found it kind of intriguing. 00:03:22.38\00:03:24.45 It's always interesting when you're hearing 00:03:24.48\00:03:25.91 multiple languages in one sermons 00:03:25.94\00:03:27.94 well, and you go back and forth and someone like myself 00:03:27.97\00:03:30.71 who I spend time in Collonges and I learned to speak French 00:03:30.74\00:03:33.31 and I hadn't really practiced in a long time. 00:03:33.34\00:03:35.64 My mind was kind of getting confused, 00:03:35.67\00:03:37.53 almost going back and forth 00:03:37.56\00:03:38.80 as to which one I should really be listening to 00:03:38.83\00:03:40.68 but it was quite a powerful sermon by Gilbert Wari. 00:03:40.71\00:03:43.95 I'll make a joke with about John because, 00:03:43.98\00:03:47.61 you know, I appreciate him to the limit, 00:03:47.64\00:03:49.61 he's been on this program many times 00:03:49.64\00:03:51.23 and he is a fluent French speaker, 00:03:51.26\00:03:53.48 that's his language and he does pretty good in English, 00:03:53.51\00:03:57.19 but I can tell he gets his mind tied up in knots 00:03:57.22\00:04:00.72 going between English and French 00:04:00.75\00:04:02.09 and sometimes I'll tease him 00:04:02.12\00:04:03.15 because he will mispronounce a French word because... 00:04:03.18\00:04:06.81 That's right. That's right. 00:04:06.84\00:04:09.02 In his mind he is moved from French to English 00:04:09.05\00:04:11.88 so he's in English and trying to say a French word to you 00:04:11.91\00:04:14.89 but he thinks it's an English word 00:04:14.92\00:04:17.15 so he'd give a English spin. 00:04:17.18\00:04:19.00 Sometime while Dr. Wari was preaching, 00:04:19.03\00:04:22.04 John's interpretation might be slightly off 00:04:22.07\00:04:24.07 and then he would say it in French 00:04:24.10\00:04:25.22 and then John would say in English. 00:04:25.25\00:04:26.28 Well, we all had that experience. 00:04:26.31\00:04:27.34 And we were going back and forth a bit but... 00:04:27.37\00:04:29.53 It's not uncommon 00:04:29.56\00:04:30.79 and some of our viewers may not have seen this, 00:04:30.82\00:04:32.77 but different church leaders traveling around the world 00:04:32.80\00:04:34.67 often have to have translators. 00:04:34.70\00:04:35.78 Absolutely. 00:04:35.81\00:04:37.09 And almost for that exception 00:04:37.12\00:04:38.95 as the translation is preceding, 00:04:38.98\00:04:40.40 someone in the audience will yell out. 00:04:40.43\00:04:42.24 No, it's this. 00:04:42.27\00:04:44.44 That was quite a-- that was quite powerful, 00:04:44.47\00:04:46.27 but the sermon was powerful. It was. 00:04:46.30\00:04:48.41 It's one of the best sermons I've heard. 00:04:48.44\00:04:50.18 The opportunity was just great to be there 00:04:50.21\00:04:51.87 and I found that to be really 00:04:51.90\00:04:53.59 one of the highlights of the tour for me. 00:04:53.62\00:04:54.94 In fact I need to tell our viewers the topic. 00:04:54.97\00:04:57.26 I remember very clearly or the title it was not why. 00:04:57.29\00:05:03.08 Like we're always asking, you know, why Lord? 00:05:03.11\00:05:05.08 Why this is happening to me? Well, why should I do this? 00:05:05.11\00:05:07.91 He says not why, ask why not? Why not? 00:05:07.94\00:05:11.77 Why shouldn't I live for you? Why shouldn't I witness? 00:05:11.80\00:05:14.52 Why shouldn't I put my life on the line for faith? 00:05:14.55\00:05:16.39 Right. 00:05:16.42\00:05:17.46 To me that was an inspiring tilt rum 00:05:17.49\00:05:21.20 what we all struggle with putting it on the upside. 00:05:21.23\00:05:23.86 Well, I think his sermon was almost 00:05:23.89\00:05:25.83 a combination of our whole tour. 00:05:25.86\00:05:28.08 Absolutely. 00:05:28.11\00:05:29.15 That's the whole purpose of why people did 00:05:29.18\00:05:31.12 what they did, they came to the conclusion that why not. 00:05:31.15\00:05:34.10 I mean this is not the mainstream. 00:05:34.13\00:05:35.86 This is not what everyone wants to do, 00:05:35.89\00:05:37.46 but we believe it's important for us to be different. 00:05:37.49\00:05:39.81 Yeah. 00:05:39.84\00:05:42.20 You went at the very beginning 00:05:42.23\00:05:43.51 but I need to link it 00:05:43.54\00:05:45.09 with something, not the reformation. 00:05:45.12\00:05:46.69 In some way the tour was two parts, 00:05:46.72\00:05:48.25 because when we were in Rome, there was no reformation. 00:05:48.28\00:05:50.70 Right. Right. 00:05:50.73\00:05:51.76 We were talking about beginning of pre-Christian history 00:05:51.79\00:05:54.38 and then picking it up 00:05:54.41\00:05:55.44 with the Christians in the Colosseum. 00:05:55.47\00:05:58.97 We went to the Colosseum 00:05:59.00\00:06:00.43 and there is not strong evidence 00:06:00.46\00:06:02.00 that was a common practice there 00:06:02.03\00:06:03.73 as it was in other places 00:06:03.76\00:06:04.86 but some gave their lives in the Colosseum. 00:06:04.89\00:06:10.33 And I remember being taken by something 00:06:10.36\00:06:12.11 I've seen several times before 00:06:12.14\00:06:13.56 but never noticed what was carved on it. 00:06:13.59\00:06:15.53 The arch of Titus just near the Colosseum. 00:06:15.56\00:06:18.23 Okay. You been to Rome before. 00:06:18.26\00:06:19.43 I have but I don't remember the arch of Titus. 00:06:19.46\00:06:21.04 You're like me. Okay. 00:06:21.07\00:06:22.41 I knew about it and I remember 00:06:22.44\00:06:24.11 walking under it but until this tour-- 00:06:24.14\00:06:26.35 this is the value of this tour 00:06:26.38\00:06:27.61 sort of made us pose and think on this topic 00:06:27.64\00:06:31.49 where a tourist normally 00:06:31.52\00:06:32.86 in those places wouldn't see it. 00:06:32.89\00:06:35.21 And they are carved on the arch of Titus 00:06:35.24\00:06:36.72 which was celebrating 00:06:36.75\00:06:38.12 the victory of Rome over Jerusalem. 00:06:38.15\00:06:42.51 He got a carving of the soldiers 00:06:42.54\00:06:44.47 brining the golden candlesticks and the other furniture's. 00:06:44.50\00:06:47.65 Well, the other items of furniture 00:06:47.68\00:06:49.09 from the temple in Jerusalem. 00:06:49.12\00:06:50.78 You know, its kind of-- Hebrew slaves. 00:06:50.81\00:06:52.19 It's really interesting that you mentioned 00:06:52.22\00:06:54.60 that because I remember reading one of the incidents 00:06:54.63\00:06:56.62 that have to victory in Rome 00:06:56.65\00:06:58.59 that whenever the general came in 00:06:58.62\00:07:00.35 that they always had a slave that was actually inside the-- 00:07:00.38\00:07:03.98 his chariot with him 00:07:04.01\00:07:05.34 and the idea was to be a reminder 00:07:05.37\00:07:07.97 that you know, today you are victorious 00:07:08.00\00:07:09.90 but tomorrow you might be at the bottom here. 00:07:09.93\00:07:12.48 And it was means of making sure 00:07:12.51\00:07:14.33 that you understood that no matter, 00:07:14.36\00:07:15.80 how great your empire is 00:07:15.83\00:07:17.53 there's somebody waiting right behind the corner 00:07:17.56\00:07:20.08 to take you off the ledge as well. 00:07:20.11\00:07:21.69 Well, Rome discovered that 00:07:21.72\00:07:22.91 even though in many ways was still living under the echo 00:07:22.94\00:07:27.05 and the ghosts of the Roman Empire 00:07:27.08\00:07:28.88 certainly is a empire loss since it's gone. 00:07:28.91\00:07:32.02 It exists on best definition in the rump form 00:07:32.05\00:07:35.42 through the continuation of the Roman Catholic Church 00:07:35.45\00:07:37.64 because they, as they will themselves tell you 00:07:37.67\00:07:39.66 they inherited the political mantle from the Roman Empire. 00:07:39.69\00:07:43.51 Absolutely. Absolutely. 00:07:43.54\00:07:45.12 Which is a more legitimate claims 00:07:45.15\00:07:46.79 on the donation of Constantine, 00:07:46.82\00:07:50.08 you know, they were given their land per say. 00:07:50.11\00:07:52.25 They inherited the power and so more legitimate than 00:07:52.28\00:07:56.47 and even the gift of Jesus to Peter, you know. 00:07:56.50\00:07:59.23 Right. 00:07:59.26\00:08:00.29 He was definitely taping him for leadership 00:08:00.32\00:08:02.90 but did he give away all his power 00:08:02.93\00:08:04.68 or purgatives I don't think so. 00:08:04.71\00:08:06.06 I don't think so either. 00:08:06.09\00:08:07.12 But to me that was a good introduction. 00:08:07.15\00:08:09.23 We saw that Christianity was nurtured 00:08:09.26\00:08:11.87 in sacrifice and persecution 00:08:11.90\00:08:14.50 and then we jump forward where you picked it up 00:08:14.53\00:08:17.49 clearly in Italy and France and Switzerland 00:08:17.52\00:08:22.57 on the great reformers a long way down the story 00:08:22.60\00:08:25.85 where faith had been carried on but not a true faith. 00:08:25.88\00:08:28.89 Right. Right. 00:08:28.92\00:08:30.17 And of course, you know, we all have that problem, 00:08:30.20\00:08:32.05 I don't know about your life. 00:08:32.08\00:08:33.24 You know, I go through a lot of the motions of faith 00:08:33.27\00:08:35.36 and I mean well but its pretty easy 00:08:35.39\00:08:37.13 for the sort of deteriorate 00:08:37.16\00:08:38.47 but you need to go back to the Bible 00:08:38.50\00:08:40.31 and Great Controversy and sharpen yourself. 00:08:40.34\00:08:42.63 And I think most Christians if you ask them 00:08:42.66\00:08:44.06 if they have faith they would tell you absolutely 00:08:44.09\00:08:46.26 but truth be told most Christians hope 00:08:46.29\00:08:48.21 they never have to exhibit that 00:08:48.24\00:08:49.68 and they hope they never have 00:08:49.71\00:08:50.74 to really live the life of faith. 00:08:50.77\00:08:52.45 And I think in particular when I came a board 00:08:52.48\00:08:54.81 and we got to Geneva and you start to go 00:08:54.84\00:08:56.71 and see that reformation wall and-- 00:08:56.74\00:08:59.34 That's what I was wanting to bring up 00:08:59.37\00:09:00.52 in the little time left. 00:09:00.55\00:09:01.65 And so-- Didn't that impress you-- 00:09:01.68\00:09:04.77 in a better relief there larger than life? 00:09:04.80\00:09:07.97 These great figures and I guess 00:09:08.00\00:09:09.50 there was an arbitrary in the sub 00:09:09.53\00:09:10.80 which has great figures the reformation. 00:09:10.83\00:09:11.87 Absolutely. 00:09:11.90\00:09:12.93 Martin Luther and Oliver Cromwell 00:09:12.96\00:09:15.38 one of my heroes hated by many but great people. 00:09:15.41\00:09:18.52 You see Huss, you see Knox, you see-- 00:09:18.55\00:09:20.74 Calvin. 00:09:20.77\00:09:21.80 Yeah, Calvin and it was just the means of letting, you know, 00:09:21.83\00:09:26.34 the individuals have put their real lives on the line. 00:09:26.37\00:09:29.29 This was not just a matter of something 00:09:29.32\00:09:31.09 where they were playing games, 00:09:31.12\00:09:32.35 this was life and death every time. 00:09:32.38\00:09:34.01 And more than just their lives 00:09:34.04\00:09:35.15 and we can talk about this another program 00:09:35.18\00:09:37.20 but very often that was their families lives 00:09:37.23\00:09:39.47 that were threatened. 00:09:39.50\00:09:40.55 Absolutely. Absolutely. 00:09:40.58\00:09:41.62 So its one thing if you're gonna self him a like 00:09:41.65\00:09:44.50 but if that means that your wife or your children suffer 00:09:44.53\00:09:47.76 and prison or harmed that could be even much worse. 00:09:47.79\00:09:50.28 Well, I think in reality what we are looking for 00:09:50.31\00:09:52.78 is trying to always find those moments 00:09:52.81\00:09:54.63 where we can move towards doing God's will. 00:09:54.66\00:09:57.53 When you get a chance to see the reformation 00:09:57.56\00:09:59.63 and all the individuals there and their lives 00:09:59.66\00:10:02.75 that they put on the line, 00:10:02.78\00:10:03.83 their families lives were put on the line 00:10:03.86\00:10:05.64 you realize that they had to have a special faith in God. 00:10:05.67\00:10:08.90 The ability to want to put everything 00:10:08.93\00:10:10.64 on the line is just something 00:10:10.67\00:10:12.04 that most of us never really have to understand. 00:10:12.07\00:10:14.53 And I could still remember thinking about 00:10:14.56\00:10:16.17 can you imagine not being able to have your Bible 00:10:16.20\00:10:18.59 or having to hide of things of that nature. 00:10:18.62\00:10:20.99 But if you put everything in God's hands 00:10:21.02\00:10:22.76 and trust Him with all 00:10:22.79\00:10:24.12 and be willing to have the faith to follow Him 00:10:24.15\00:10:26.09 it just shows that God will always protect us all the way. 00:10:26.12\00:10:30.58 The religious liberty bus tour have focused my mind 00:10:30.61\00:10:34.36 in ways that I never imagined. 00:10:34.39\00:10:36.46 As the wheels on the bus went round and round 00:10:36.49\00:10:39.61 as the children's story goes 00:10:39.64\00:10:42.09 we moved from one location to another where we saw 00:10:42.12\00:10:45.79 undeniable physical evidence of people's faithfulness. 00:10:45.82\00:10:50.78 It was amazing to account 00:10:50.81\00:10:52.94 the words of the Great Controversy 00:10:52.97\00:10:54.82 written a hundred plus years ago 00:10:54.85\00:10:57.09 writing about events hundreds of years ago 00:10:57.12\00:10:59.70 and to be in those places and see written on the walls, 00:10:59.73\00:11:03.73 scroll on the stones of the floor, 00:11:03.76\00:11:06.88 written in the geography 00:11:06.91\00:11:09.53 as we accounted those locations. 00:11:09.56\00:11:11.80 The stories of people of faith 00:11:11.83\00:11:14.53 at any cost to worship God 00:11:14.56\00:11:17.55 to share and read His holy word 00:11:17.58\00:11:20.17 to give if necessary their lives 00:11:20.20\00:11:23.43 to tackle the proclamation of the truth. 00:11:23.46\00:11:25.68 The wheels on the bus went round and round 00:11:25.71\00:11:28.06 but the wheels in my mind went round and round 00:11:28.09\00:11:30.83 and memory was over whelming. 00:11:30.86\00:11:33.74 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:33.77\00:11:36.92
