Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:02.94\00:00:05.63 Before the break with Dr. John Graz, 00:00:05.66\00:00:07.78 we were exalting really over the happy conclusion 00:00:07.81\00:00:12.64 at least to part of the case with Pastor Monteiro in Togo, 00:00:12.67\00:00:17.93 a Seventh-day Adventist worker 00:00:17.96\00:00:20.42 who in the course of his duties was implicated in a horrible, 00:00:20.45\00:00:24.09 over charge of a horrible crime, 00:00:24.12\00:00:26.38 spent two years in jail. 00:00:26.41\00:00:28.67 The church intervened and you went for three times, 00:00:28.70\00:00:31.89 wasn't it or two times? 00:00:31.92\00:00:33.06 In the prison I visited, in the prison three times. 00:00:33.09\00:00:35.42 I went alone there once but-- with send other people. 00:00:35.45\00:00:39.11 Many efforts were put forth on his behalf, 00:00:39.14\00:00:41.51 but it took years and not till the very end 00:00:41.54\00:00:44.47 there was a very much of glimmer of hope. 00:00:44.50\00:00:46.14 It happened suddenly at the end. 00:00:46.17\00:00:47.61 Including the old-- 00:00:47.64\00:00:48.67 the president of our church went there 00:00:48.70\00:00:50.44 and he spoken in the prison too. 00:00:50.47\00:00:51.50 Ted Wilson visited the area. 00:00:51.53\00:00:54.82 The down side of it, 00:00:54.85\00:00:55.99 it is there are two Adventist laymen 00:00:56.02\00:00:58.89 that were actually convicted 00:00:58.92\00:01:00.41 as part of the same accusation right? 00:01:00.44\00:01:02.02 Yeah. 00:01:02.05\00:01:03.11 And you know, that's very sad 00:01:03.14\00:01:04.40 because one of them study in France. 00:01:04.43\00:01:06.52 He was member of a church and he's close to Geneva. 00:01:06.55\00:01:10.44 He was very good at school. 00:01:10.47\00:01:12.26 He got the good diploma and he work there. 00:01:12.29\00:01:15.04 And he did not want to leave 00:01:15.07\00:01:17.04 but he was called by people the government people 00:01:17.07\00:01:20.10 to comeback to his country 00:01:20.13\00:01:21.55 because they wanted to start a new program, 00:01:21.58\00:01:24.36 cell phone and so many was very good in communication. 00:01:24.39\00:01:27.63 And he decided to comeback to his country 00:01:27.66\00:01:29.75 to help his country. 00:01:29.78\00:01:31.11 And he's in prison, 00:01:31.14\00:01:32.19 he has been in prison for more then two years now 00:01:32.22\00:01:34.61 for something which has not been proved really. 00:01:34.64\00:01:37.55 Even if the sentence has been done-- 00:01:37.58\00:01:39.24 They were convicted but no plain test-- 00:01:39.27\00:01:43.38 there was a testimony, 00:01:43.41\00:01:44.79 there's recounted that was central 00:01:44.82\00:01:46.50 but beyond that no evidence, zero evidence. 00:01:46.53\00:01:48.47 Yeah, that's but we hope 00:01:48.50\00:01:50.59 that one day he will be free 00:01:50.62\00:01:52.68 but it shows that, 00:01:52.71\00:01:54.16 you know, how things can happen. 00:01:54.19\00:01:56.30 You know, you have prejudice 00:01:56.33\00:01:58.20 and you have something which happen-- 00:01:58.23\00:02:01.45 they need up to find a guilty people 00:02:01.48\00:02:03.77 because, of course, 00:02:03.80\00:02:04.92 you know when you have rumors 00:02:04.95\00:02:07.61 about people who are kill-- the most of the people ask, 00:02:07.64\00:02:11.97 who are the guilty? 00:02:12.00\00:02:13.22 Why are they are still free? 00:02:13.25\00:02:14.28 Somebody has to be-- 00:02:14.31\00:02:15.68 Somebody has to be arrested. 00:02:15.71\00:02:17.03 It happened almost everywhere, 00:02:17.06\00:02:18.84 you know, and sometime we don't know. 00:02:18.87\00:02:20.59 We believe that it's not the case 00:02:20.62\00:02:22.67 but we know 10 years later 00:02:22.70\00:02:25.20 we know that it happened there too. 00:02:25.23\00:02:27.42 They needed to arrest some people. 00:02:27.45\00:02:29.13 But I think even so far 00:02:29.16\00:02:30.52 this story illustrates very well to me 00:02:30.55\00:02:33.25 and I was on this committee so I see it first hand. 00:02:33.28\00:02:35.93 The church has a concern for members 00:02:35.96\00:02:37.82 even in the most far flown country 00:02:37.85\00:02:39.47 will put forth the best efforts. 00:02:39.50\00:02:43.85 Members around the world because of efforts you made, 00:02:43.88\00:02:46.28 we're united in prayer, writing letters and so on. 00:02:46.31\00:02:50.64 There's only so much we can do. 00:02:50.67\00:02:52.69 All of us need to throw ourselves on God's mercy 00:02:52.72\00:02:55.02 at the end of the day 00:02:55.05\00:02:56.56 and I'm sure God has an eye 00:02:56.59\00:02:59.27 over these men and many others, 00:02:59.30\00:03:01.58 you know, they apostle Paul languished in prison. 00:03:01.61\00:03:04.33 Do you think that he ended his days in prison and? 00:03:04.36\00:03:06.16 You have the two positions. 00:03:06.19\00:03:07.27 You have some people who say 00:03:07.30\00:03:08.71 that we should not do anything about these people 00:03:08.74\00:03:12.31 because we're the general confront, 00:03:12.34\00:03:13.95 the world of chair, the head of the church 00:03:13.98\00:03:16.17 and let the local people to do something. 00:03:16.20\00:03:18.86 And you have people saying that you're not doing enough. 00:03:18.89\00:03:21.71 It means, in the case of Monteiro 00:03:21.74\00:03:24.06 you know we wanted to start earlier 00:03:24.09\00:03:26.85 but the message coming from the local church said, 00:03:26.88\00:03:31.13 the leaders they had said not now 00:03:31.16\00:03:33.13 because he will be free soon, he will be free soon. 00:03:33.16\00:03:36.20 And we have also to work very closely with our leaders 00:03:36.23\00:03:40.76 and we answer their request. 00:03:40.79\00:03:43.19 It means if they say no, 00:03:43.22\00:03:44.43 like, that is the case in some other countries 00:03:44.46\00:03:47.02 where we have people in prison, 00:03:47.05\00:03:49.13 but the local leaders say, no, no, don't do anything, 00:03:49.16\00:03:51.94 you will make our life more difficult. 00:03:51.97\00:03:54.74 I receive a report about religious freedom 00:03:54.77\00:03:56.98 just few hours ago and they answered, 00:03:57.01\00:04:01.07 you know, my correspondent concluded saying that, 00:04:01.10\00:04:04.37 but don't do anything 00:04:04.40\00:04:05.47 because it will make our life more difficult. 00:04:05.50\00:04:08.29 Well, that's the conundrum 00:04:08.32\00:04:10.35 that faces people of faith in many difficult situations 00:04:10.38\00:04:14.13 and yet we're called to witness in adverse situations. 00:04:14.16\00:04:17.11 And I'm not overly sympathetic with that to be honest. 00:04:17.14\00:04:19.69 Yeah. 00:04:19.72\00:04:21.40 Like for example in-- 00:04:21.43\00:04:23.08 well, Pakistan is the primary one. 00:04:23.11\00:04:24.96 We know that there is a broad based 00:04:24.99\00:04:26.76 societal prejudice from the majority Muslims 00:04:26.79\00:04:30.53 toward minority Christians, 00:04:30.56\00:04:32.82 that's not even by law, that just exists. 00:04:32.85\00:04:35.04 Then there's some draconian laws in place. 00:04:35.07\00:04:37.83 Well, the idea that when someone runs fall of the law 00:04:37.86\00:04:40.38 or when they are facing a societal challenge 00:04:40.41\00:04:43.70 that if we say something critical 00:04:43.73\00:04:47.15 or even explanatory of the situation 00:04:47.18\00:04:49.17 that will make it even worse 00:04:49.20\00:04:50.47 for that person on the ground this is the point. 00:04:50.50\00:04:52.63 The battle lines are already drawn in my view. 00:04:52.66\00:04:55.34 But I know even with Liberty Magazine 00:04:55.37\00:04:57.80 at times some people have said, 00:04:57.83\00:04:58.86 oh, you shouldn't write anything. 00:04:58.89\00:04:59.93 Don't put anything there, 00:04:59.96\00:05:01.16 you know, it will just make it worse. 00:05:01.19\00:05:03.46 When the battle lines are drawn, 00:05:03.49\00:05:05.69 unless what you've to avoid is pejorative attacks 00:05:05.72\00:05:09.41 where you're doing it gratuitously 00:05:09.44\00:05:12.05 in a bad intension. 00:05:12.08\00:05:13.94 Of course anyone would be bothered. 00:05:13.97\00:05:15.82 The problem is, you know, 00:05:15.85\00:05:17.51 we're an organized church and it means, 00:05:17.54\00:05:20.55 it's very easy for the government 00:05:20.58\00:05:22.39 to create such a problem for local church 00:05:22.42\00:05:26.09 that it becomes very difficult for us. 00:05:26.12\00:05:28.54 This is why we have to be prudent 00:05:28.57\00:05:31.16 but you know, there are several ways to help people. 00:05:31.19\00:05:33.93 Well, of course but let me ask you a question. 00:05:33.96\00:05:35.62 I know the answer to this, 00:05:35.65\00:05:36.80 but we need say it on this program, 00:05:36.83\00:05:38.76 not particularly with our church 00:05:38.79\00:05:40.49 but civil liberty situations 00:05:40.52\00:05:42.63 and religious liberty situations in particular. 00:05:42.66\00:05:45.57 Think back over the recent decades, 00:05:45.60\00:05:48.89 where the situation ultimately changed for the better. 00:05:48.92\00:05:51.94 Was it changed because it was ignored and allowed, 00:05:51.97\00:05:54.86 it's free rein in the local area? 00:05:54.89\00:05:56.27 Was it because of outside protestations 00:05:56.30\00:05:59.64 and even people that put their lives on the line in the area? 00:05:59.67\00:06:03.75 But the answer is so self evident. 00:06:03.78\00:06:06.46 It's, that's what forces change 00:06:06.49\00:06:08.10 even if that immediate situation 00:06:08.13\00:06:10.82 it may appear to make it even worse. 00:06:10.85\00:06:12.53 And Ellen White, Seventh-day Adventist author 00:06:12.56\00:06:14.59 writing in Great Controversy. 00:06:14.62\00:06:16.29 She says the reformers, 00:06:16.32\00:06:17.38 the Protestant reformers they at times felt 00:06:17.41\00:06:19.11 that they have brought it all down on their heads 00:06:19.14\00:06:21.36 by their actions. 00:06:21.39\00:06:22.47 And yes, immediately they had 00:06:22.50\00:06:24.72 but things were already in a place to do that 00:06:24.75\00:06:27.37 and their very action ultimately drew the teeth 00:06:27.40\00:06:31.21 on the bad situation. 00:06:31.24\00:06:32.83 But you will always, 00:06:32.86\00:06:34.06 you know, the opposite IDs 00:06:34.09\00:06:36.38 that saying that if you do nothing 00:06:36.41\00:06:38.71 things will be solved gradually. 00:06:38.74\00:06:40.90 That is not true. Yeah, that's not true. 00:06:40.93\00:06:42.65 Most of the time that's not true. 00:06:42.68\00:06:44.23 Like I can remember one case that I was told in Australia, 00:06:44.26\00:06:47.54 I went to Yugoslav church during the communist era 00:06:47.57\00:06:52.01 and I met with a couple 00:06:52.04\00:06:53.19 who had gone on their vacation to Yugoslavia 00:06:53.22\00:06:55.96 and I should remember the next old country. 00:06:55.99\00:06:57.82 They were smuggling Sabbath school lessons, 00:06:57.85\00:07:00.95 Bible lessons across the border 00:07:00.98\00:07:02.84 into the neighboring communist country. 00:07:02.87\00:07:05.58 Well, they were stopped by the border guards, 00:07:05.61\00:07:07.83 arrested and interrogated for 10 hours 00:07:07.86\00:07:13.08 and then expelled from the country, 00:07:13.11\00:07:15.08 turned out the local pastors wife 00:07:15.11\00:07:17.19 had informed the authorities. 00:07:17.22\00:07:19.07 And she did that because she thought 00:07:19.10\00:07:21.22 that their action would turn the authorities against them. 00:07:21.25\00:07:24.61 That they had a certain low level freedom, 00:07:24.64\00:07:26.63 but that's a fallacy. 00:07:26.66\00:07:28.15 We had these-- 00:07:28.18\00:07:29.58 you know, we had this experience 00:07:29.61\00:07:31.08 in some other country too. 00:07:31.11\00:07:32.57 You know, the fact is you have to be pretend 00:07:32.60\00:07:34.86 because you don't want to create too much problem-- 00:07:34.89\00:07:37.01 Absolute. We're not people-- 00:07:37.04\00:07:38.07 We're people who are living there. 00:07:38.10\00:07:39.19 Yes. 00:07:39.22\00:07:40.26 But when people ask us, 00:07:40.29\00:07:42.62 but sometime as you say they can not ask 00:07:42.65\00:07:44.53 because they don't know how to ask and so on. 00:07:44.56\00:07:47.37 It means you can not say that, 00:07:47.40\00:07:49.09 if they don't ask there is no problem. 00:07:49.12\00:07:51.08 Now there is a problem, 00:07:51.11\00:07:52.15 we have brothers and sisters in prison. 00:07:52.18\00:07:54.16 And now we've to think how we can help. 00:07:54.19\00:07:57.12 Of course, we have to do our best 00:07:57.15\00:07:58.83 to avoid to create problem. 00:07:58.86\00:08:00.44 You know, in the case where we mentioned 00:08:00.47\00:08:02.97 it was not a problem for religious freedom, 00:08:03.00\00:08:05.06 it was more a problem prejudice. 00:08:05.09\00:08:07.12 But you know, our people there 00:08:07.15\00:08:09.25 should have been more active in the bringing-- 00:08:09.28\00:08:12.77 you know, in building relations with officials 00:08:12.80\00:08:15.35 because if you're not now 00:08:15.38\00:08:17.03 because you don't do anything-- 00:08:17.06\00:08:19.51 you have no relation at whole with the community, 00:08:19.54\00:08:23.33 we've the officials with the government, 00:08:23.36\00:08:25.36 they don't you. 00:08:25.39\00:08:26.49 You are not interested. 00:08:26.52\00:08:27.88 You know, when people 00:08:27.91\00:08:29.22 don't have relations with the authorities, 00:08:29.25\00:08:32.26 I don't see to be-- I don't talk about complicity, 00:08:32.29\00:08:35.02 I talk about religion. Yeah, they are more vulnerable. 00:08:35.05\00:08:36.85 And what does it mean? It means you're not interested. 00:08:36.88\00:08:39.85 You are not interested by the community. 00:08:39.88\00:08:42.46 It means you're strange people because you're not interested. 00:08:42.49\00:08:45.41 I mean, that's something we should really realize. 00:08:45.44\00:08:48.09 And in this case the you and other world leaders 00:08:48.12\00:08:51.04 were in the position to, 00:08:51.07\00:08:52.83 to make contacts that they couldn't at that time. 00:08:52.86\00:08:54.97 Yeah, this is what. 00:08:55.00\00:08:56.24 There was even financial help in essence 00:08:56.27\00:08:59.30 that they were not capable to provide. 00:08:59.33\00:09:00.53 And this is why when we have an event, 00:09:00.56\00:09:02.21 you know, we lead people to the authorities 00:09:02.24\00:09:04.84 and to talk with them and to talk about 00:09:04.87\00:09:06.73 what we're doing and they see us differently. 00:09:06.76\00:09:09.93 When we invite minister or ambassador 00:09:09.96\00:09:12.74 at the General Conference, 00:09:12.77\00:09:13.87 it's the same, you know, 00:09:13.90\00:09:15.05 people will see what we are doing. 00:09:15.08\00:09:16.96 They change their mind. It's a very good meetings. 00:09:16.99\00:09:19.04 I'm still on a high. 00:09:19.07\00:09:20.24 You've the Australian ambassador there. 00:09:20.27\00:09:22.60 We had a protocol lunch for them 00:09:22.63\00:09:24.91 and I've a follow up interview with him. 00:09:24.94\00:09:26.79 But it was wonderful to hear him. 00:09:26.82\00:09:28.75 In fact he fairly spontaneously 00:09:28.78\00:09:30.61 gave an analysis of how his country 00:09:30.64\00:09:33.03 and the United States treat religious freedom. 00:09:33.06\00:09:36.31 We created or we encouraged an awareness 00:09:36.34\00:09:40.02 on this representative of this country 00:09:40.05\00:09:42.14 of religious freedom and he had to explain himself. 00:09:42.17\00:09:45.88 Yeah. Give me one minute. 00:09:45.91\00:09:47.84 Exactly when ambassadors or delegation 00:09:47.87\00:09:51.19 we receive many delegations from different countries. 00:09:51.22\00:09:53.88 Most of the time from country 00:09:53.91\00:09:55.01 where we don't have religious freedom. 00:09:55.04\00:09:56.91 When they see what we are doing, 00:09:56.94\00:09:59.28 when they have a global vision it changed their mind. 00:09:59.31\00:10:02.33 Yeah. 00:10:02.36\00:10:03.39 No, no, this is a privilege 00:10:03.42\00:10:04.45 I think that you can be involved 00:10:04.48\00:10:06.08 with such a thing as thing. 00:10:06.11\00:10:07.14 And this is right. And it's gonna continue right. 00:10:07.17\00:10:08.64 This is gonna be as an ongoing committee. 00:10:08.67\00:10:09.70 Yeah, exactly. 00:10:09.73\00:10:10.76 This is why, you know, we should think. 00:10:10.79\00:10:13.02 Even if there is no publicity we should think and pray 00:10:13.05\00:10:16.49 for those who are in prison, 00:10:16.52\00:10:17.71 for those who are suffering for their faith 00:10:17.74\00:10:20.49 because they should know in one way or another 00:10:20.52\00:10:23.16 that they are not alone, 00:10:23.19\00:10:24.36 they are million brothers and sisters 00:10:24.39\00:10:26.28 with them praying for them. 00:10:26.31\00:10:29.84 Coming back from one of his missionary tours, 00:10:29.87\00:10:32.77 the apostle Paul stopped off in Caesarea, 00:10:32.80\00:10:35.80 met with the believers and then was shocked 00:10:35.83\00:10:38.91 when the Prophet Agabus bound his own hands 00:10:38.94\00:10:41.62 with Paul's belt and he says, you go to Jerusalem, 00:10:41.65\00:10:43.83 he says, you're gonna be bound like this. 00:10:43.86\00:10:46.27 The members were disconcerted, 00:10:46.30\00:10:48.17 of course didn't want him to be put in prison, 00:10:48.20\00:10:50.99 but he said, don't cry. 00:10:51.02\00:10:52.13 He says, I'm willing and ready to go to prison. 00:10:52.16\00:10:55.61 I think about that a lot 00:10:55.64\00:10:57.47 when we discuss different believers 00:10:57.50\00:10:59.76 and in particular Seventh-day Adventists 00:10:59.79\00:11:02.02 who suffer and are imprisoned, 00:11:02.05\00:11:04.13 if not for their faith because of their faith 00:11:04.16\00:11:06.89 as a compounding element 00:11:06.92\00:11:08.80 they suffer and have to remain faithful 00:11:08.83\00:11:11.13 even behind prison bars. 00:11:11.16\00:11:12.90 This has been the story with Pastor Monteiro, 00:11:12.93\00:11:17.11 a Seventh-day Adventist worker in Togo, Africa, 00:11:17.14\00:11:20.05 who was sucked into an incredible criminal situation 00:11:20.08\00:11:23.81 that he was clearly innocent off, not guilty, 00:11:23.84\00:11:27.76 but because of his faith 00:11:27.79\00:11:28.98 and the prejudice that kicked in, 00:11:29.01\00:11:31.39 he found himself behind bars and faced with the situation. 00:11:31.42\00:11:34.83 Did he except it like the other prisoners 00:11:34.86\00:11:37.33 or did he witness and take powerful advantage of it 00:11:37.36\00:11:40.81 in witnessing and praising the Lord 00:11:40.84\00:11:42.86 that perhaps this imprisonment was for some purpose 00:11:42.89\00:11:45.94 to advance the knowledge of God. 00:11:45.97\00:11:48.00 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:48.03\00:11:51.10
