Next to Ghana. 00:01:58.63\00:02:00.84 It's a country of only six million people. 00:02:00.87\00:02:02.83 Yeah, and... 00:02:02.86\00:02:04.06 Half of them animist still, then a mixture of Islam, 00:02:04.09\00:02:06.93 Christianity and so on. 00:02:06.96\00:02:08.24 Yeah, and a strong power there and he wanted to help someone 00:02:08.27\00:02:13.49 who has been arrested several times 00:02:13.52\00:02:16.07 and this guy who has been arrested was arrested again 00:02:16.10\00:02:20.01 and he was accused of raping 00:02:20.04\00:02:21.47 and after he was accused of being part of a kind of gang 00:02:21.50\00:02:26.17 who kidnapped young girl. 00:02:26.20\00:02:28.05 Killing and draining the blood of young women. 00:02:28.08\00:02:30.40 I think nine young women were involved. 00:02:30.43\00:02:32.01 Yeah, but you know that's a very, very difficult thing. 00:02:32.04\00:02:34.00 A bizarre thing. Bizarre, bizarre 'cause... 00:02:34.03\00:02:35.28 Zero evidence. 00:02:35.31\00:02:36.64 Yeah, no evidence at all. 00:02:36.67\00:02:37.84 Nothing whatsoever at any point up to the arrest, trial. 00:02:37.87\00:02:42.51 There was never any, any evidence, 00:02:42.54\00:02:44.13 not even circumstantial evidence. 00:02:44.16\00:02:46.80 Even this person that he contacted him 00:02:46.83\00:02:48.80 come to the church for help. 00:02:48.83\00:02:50.45 When he was arrested, 00:02:50.48\00:02:51.89 I think they probably tortured him 00:02:51.92\00:02:53.05 and he named some people he knew 00:02:53.08\00:02:54.48 and he mentioned Pastor Monteiro, 00:02:54.51\00:02:55.96 and then religious prejudice kicked in. 00:02:55.99\00:02:58.00 That's how I see it. 00:02:58.03\00:02:59.25 Yeah, because they have to justify 00:02:59.28\00:03:00.81 what you are doing with the blood. 00:03:00.84\00:03:02.89 And you know the guy said that the blood, 00:03:02.92\00:03:05.57 and the blood and the rumors 00:03:05.60\00:03:07.75 and so on that entered this church, 00:03:07.78\00:03:09.65 you know, they use the blood for secret ceremony 00:03:09.68\00:03:12.84 that was said, you know, secret ceremony, 00:03:12.87\00:03:15.22 but fortunately it did not last too long. 00:03:15.25\00:03:17.41 People realized, the officials 00:03:17.44\00:03:20.25 and the newspaper realized that that doesn't work. 00:03:20.28\00:03:24.59 But you know in the context of the country, 00:03:24.62\00:03:27.31 that's not something which is totally stranded. 00:03:27.34\00:03:30.08 It mean it can happen and it's not something 00:03:30.11\00:03:32.54 which is, no, it cannot happen. 00:03:32.57\00:03:34.17 No, it's tied up to the animist ceremony. 00:03:34.20\00:03:37.29 Yeah, many things and he was arrested you can imagine. 00:03:37.32\00:03:41.68 You have nothing to do 00:03:41.71\00:03:42.90 with what you're accused, you're arrested, 00:03:42.93\00:03:45.58 you don't even know why you are arrested. 00:03:45.61\00:03:47.96 Put in jail during 15 days 00:03:47.99\00:03:49.86 he was into cell, he was beaten. 00:03:49.89\00:03:52.50 That was terrible. 00:03:52.53\00:03:53.85 Then he was transferred to the prison. 00:03:53.88\00:03:56.24 I met him three times. 00:03:56.27\00:03:57.78 I went to the prison 00:03:57.81\00:03:59.31 and I preached him even in a prison. 00:03:59.34\00:04:01.34 And he was there for almost two years 00:04:01.37\00:04:04.23 and he was declared 00:04:04.26\00:04:05.34 just at the beginning of January, 2014. 00:04:05.37\00:04:09.62 He was declared by the court as totally innocent. 00:04:09.65\00:04:14.09 And fortunately now he is free, 00:04:14.12\00:04:15.86 but some other people are still in prison 00:04:15.89\00:04:18.51 and we try to do our best to help them 00:04:18.54\00:04:21.60 but they have been sentenced for a life in prison. 00:04:21.63\00:04:25.66 It is very important that we remember 00:04:25.69\00:04:29.53 not just Pastor Monteiro who it's turned out 00:04:29.56\00:04:31.43 well for him, but there are others. 00:04:31.46\00:04:33.11 This is an ongoing challenge for us to vindicate people. 00:04:33.14\00:04:37.01 In several countries including Pakistan 00:04:37.04\00:04:39.30 and somewhere people are in prison 00:04:39.33\00:04:40.88 and they did nothing, really nothing. 00:04:40.91\00:04:43.12 There is no proof but for one reason 00:04:43.15\00:04:45.90 and another one, they are in prison. 00:04:45.93\00:04:47.96 And they may stay years and years. 00:04:47.99\00:04:50.07 But you know it also led us to imagine 00:04:50.10\00:04:55.00 what could happen to us one day or another. 00:04:55.03\00:04:58.51 You never, you cannot say, well, 00:04:58.54\00:05:01.40 I will be protected from this kind of thing. 00:05:01.43\00:05:04.04 We are living in an imperfect non perfect world. 00:05:04.07\00:05:07.78 And you can imagine the suffering of people 00:05:07.81\00:05:11.06 being arrested putting you in jail with other people. 00:05:11.09\00:05:14.93 The hygiene is very, very poor. 00:05:14.96\00:05:17.57 Everything is poor. You can be sick at any moment. 00:05:17.60\00:05:20.13 You can be killed in a prison. 00:05:20.16\00:05:22.35 And for what? For nothing. 00:05:22.38\00:05:23.97 You don't know why you are in prison. 00:05:24.00\00:05:25.71 You were in that prison in Togo of all that I've heard 00:05:25.74\00:05:28.53 from you and others 00:05:28.56\00:05:29.88 is the prison is not a place you want to be, 00:05:29.91\00:05:32.87 but it's a structure that's guarded 00:05:32.90\00:05:35.03 on the outside by the guards. 00:05:35.06\00:05:36.67 But when you go in the door, it's run by the prisoners, 00:05:36.70\00:05:40.51 they feed themselves with food handed them 00:05:40.54\00:05:42.43 from relatives and so on. 00:05:42.46\00:05:43.82 But it's pretty much a self governing 00:05:43.85\00:05:46.06 little criminal world. 00:05:46.09\00:05:47.81 Yeah, and of course you have to pay 00:05:47.84\00:05:49.45 for almost everything but you know that's 00:05:49.48\00:05:52.01 the positive side I should say that. 00:05:52.04\00:05:53.81 Well, they try to be negative if the prisoners don't like. 00:05:53.84\00:05:57.35 But one positive side is your wife can come everyday 00:05:57.38\00:06:01.17 and give you food because if not you die. 00:06:01.20\00:06:04.22 And the negative side is that the hygiene is so poor 00:06:04.25\00:06:08.11 that you can die at any moment. 00:06:08.14\00:06:09.78 And if you are sick, the chance for you to be 00:06:09.81\00:06:13.60 to recover are really, really very small. 00:06:13.63\00:06:17.54 No, that's not the good way but there are countries 00:06:17.57\00:06:20.46 where if you talk about what you believe, 00:06:20.49\00:06:24.18 it could be interpreted as an insult 00:06:24.21\00:06:27.00 against the national religion 00:06:27.03\00:06:29.34 or the leader of the national religion... 00:06:29.37\00:06:31.55 Or national security. On national security. 00:06:31.58\00:06:34.37 And this is the law on blasphemy 00:06:34.40\00:06:37.81 and the law on apostasy. 00:06:37.84\00:06:39.62 If you talk, you share what you believe, 00:06:39.65\00:06:41.79 someone follow what you believe, they can be arrested. 00:06:41.82\00:06:44.82 Well, you're not just talking theoretically, 00:06:44.85\00:06:46.51 what you're saying now applies to Canada-- 00:06:46.54\00:06:47.93 Sentenced to death. 00:06:47.96\00:06:49.28 Not to Canada, to Pakistan. 00:06:49.31\00:06:52.57 Pakistan it's the death sentence 00:06:52.60\00:06:56.04 typically to malign Islam, 00:06:56.07\00:06:58.54 which off course is acquitted with the state? 00:06:58.57\00:07:00.60 Yeah, exactly. 00:07:00.63\00:07:01.68 And maligning it can be very mild 00:07:01.71\00:07:04.20 and implied insult like there were these-- 00:07:04.23\00:07:09.04 I've mentioned on this program before. 00:07:09.07\00:07:10.60 Two brothers in Pakistan 00:07:10.63\00:07:12.52 buying ice cream from a street vendor 00:07:12.55\00:07:14.59 and they wanted to use the plate 00:07:14.62\00:07:15.73 that other Muslims would use and of course they were refused 00:07:15.76\00:07:18.51 and they said you've insulted Islam. 00:07:18.54\00:07:20.64 They got 25 years for that. 00:07:20.67\00:07:22.42 Oh, yeah, that's many, many example like that 00:07:22.45\00:07:25.46 where you know you have a beautiful house. 00:07:25.49\00:07:28.13 You are Christian or you have another religion 00:07:28.16\00:07:31.85 which is not the state religion 00:07:31.88\00:07:33.87 and people want to take your house 00:07:33.90\00:07:35.96 and they will say that you have insulted our religion. 00:07:35.99\00:07:39.50 Now the time it will take to prove that it's not true. 00:07:39.53\00:07:42.70 You may be arrested or you may be assassinated by radicals. 00:07:42.73\00:07:47.04 And which is also a problem in some countries that 00:07:47.07\00:07:50.16 it's so much integrated in the culture 00:07:50.19\00:07:53.19 that 90 percent of the population 00:07:53.22\00:07:55.36 are in favor of such a law. 00:07:55.39\00:07:57.86 And you know when they kill in Pakistan, 00:07:57.89\00:08:00.77 when they kill the Muslim leader 00:08:00.80\00:08:02.93 or the governor of Punjab you know they killed them. 00:08:02.96\00:08:06.73 Thousand and thousand people 00:08:06.76\00:08:07.95 demonstrated saying that they did well, 00:08:07.98\00:08:09.88 the one who did that that the bodyguard did well. 00:08:09.91\00:08:13.86 Thank you for the bodyguard to kill this people. 00:08:13.89\00:08:16.00 Yeah. He was applauded for Islam. 00:08:16.03\00:08:18.26 Yeah, applauded and you can imagine now 00:08:18.29\00:08:20.05 the life of the religious minorities there. 00:08:20.08\00:08:22.69 You have to think about, 00:08:22.72\00:08:24.36 be careful about what I talk about, 00:08:24.39\00:08:26.43 be careful about what I do. 00:08:26.46\00:08:28.10 And it's true. 00:08:28.13\00:08:29.16 Religious minorities on this program 00:08:29.19\00:08:31.30 had an Ahmadiyya Muslim cleric, 00:08:31.33\00:08:34.03 who points out that in Pakistan the Ahmadiyya Muslims 00:08:34.06\00:08:37.93 even perhaps more than Christians 00:08:37.96\00:08:39.64 in Pakistan are persecuted, fined, imprisoned 00:08:39.67\00:08:43.42 and sometimes executed just because of their faith. 00:08:43.45\00:08:46.07 They don't even have to do anything with it. 00:08:46.10\00:08:48.21 And it is in the law. 00:08:48.24\00:08:49.60 You know, they are not recognizing the law 00:08:49.63\00:08:51.76 and they are persecuted according to the law. 00:08:51.79\00:08:53.61 Not even citizenship rights in America. 00:08:53.64\00:08:55.01 Yeah that's incredible. 00:08:55.04\00:08:56.41 Well, this is what happened in our world today. 00:08:56.44\00:08:58.48 Now, I don't want to throw something in 00:08:58.51\00:08:59.55 and you know perhaps it's overreached 00:08:59.58\00:09:01.73 but I think not as a solitary example. 00:09:01.76\00:09:04.21 Even in the United States whether it's practical 00:09:04.24\00:09:07.06 religious liberty on ongoing basis. 00:09:07.09\00:09:09.60 President Obama not to long ago 00:09:09.63\00:09:12.13 in the ongoing efforts against terrorism announced 00:09:12.16\00:09:15.55 that he said that this way, the government has people 00:09:15.58\00:09:18.86 that they believe are involved with terrorism, 00:09:18.89\00:09:23.41 antigovernment activities. 00:09:23.44\00:09:24.73 But they have no evidence. 00:09:24.76\00:09:25.79 Not enough evidence to try them. 00:09:25.82\00:09:27.76 And they will be now detained indefinitely. 00:09:27.79\00:09:30.84 I don't believe he meant anything bad about 00:09:30.87\00:09:32.91 but that sort of dynamic easily translates 00:09:32.94\00:09:36.99 into whoever the government of today 00:09:37.02\00:09:39.12 thinks is an enemy or is antithetical 00:09:39.15\00:09:41.37 to their purposes, they round them up. 00:09:41.40\00:09:42.67 And in many countries that translates 00:09:42.70\00:09:45.15 very easily to religious out there. 00:09:45.18\00:09:47.95 They're seen as dangerous, so with that sort of a law. 00:09:47.98\00:09:51.31 Not now but that easily could translate 00:09:51.34\00:09:53.46 into people with the divergent 00:09:53.49\00:09:55.70 religious view could be cast as terrorists, 00:09:55.73\00:09:59.52 enemies of the state. 00:09:59.55\00:10:00.61 This is why, you know, when we pass a law, 00:10:00.64\00:10:03.10 this kind of restrictive law which as you said the intension 00:10:03.13\00:10:06.53 is really to protect citizen in the country, 00:10:06.56\00:10:09.29 but we have always to think about the consequences 00:10:09.32\00:10:12.54 and how the law will be implemented 00:10:12.57\00:10:15.20 and who will implement it, because you know 00:10:15.23\00:10:18.10 a law can be manipulated and you can use the law against 00:10:18.13\00:10:22.16 and you can use the law against your enemy. 00:10:22.19\00:10:24.03 To one degree or another all political factions 00:10:24.06\00:10:27.11 in any country manipulate it. 00:10:27.14\00:10:29.38 Hopefully not illegally but I mean there's a bias. 00:10:29.41\00:10:33.59 They want to keep their faction in power. 00:10:33.62\00:10:35.76 They have an inherent bias because they stand 00:10:35.79\00:10:38.52 for this political viewpoint 00:10:38.55\00:10:40.02 and they look differently at the other. 00:10:40.05\00:10:42.16 So when you have a law that enables them to act on that, 00:10:42.19\00:10:45.31 it can be very troublesome. 00:10:45.34\00:10:46.91 And coming back to Monteiro. 00:10:46.94\00:10:48.21 You know, we organized a big, we organized a big campaign. 00:10:48.24\00:10:52.63 We ask the people around the world 00:10:52.66\00:10:54.45 to send cards for Christmas. 00:10:54.48\00:10:58.04 And we send prayer, you know, people were asked 00:10:58.07\00:11:02.15 to pray and so on and finally you receive 00:11:02.18\00:11:04.60 thousand and thousand letter and he said that was so happy. 00:11:04.63\00:11:07.90 They actually arrived in bags at the prison. 00:11:07.93\00:11:10.44 Yes, they arrived in bag at the prison. 00:11:10.47\00:11:12.27 Its a wonderful thing. 00:11:12.30\00:11:13.37 And then all people say that it's incredible, 00:11:13.40\00:11:15.38 you know, why you are receiving all these letter? 00:11:15.41\00:11:17.71 You know the message we wanted to show that, 00:11:17.74\00:11:20.08 you know, when a brother is in prison, 00:11:20.11\00:11:22.21 yeah, he has million and million 00:11:22.24\00:11:24.76 brothers and sisters around the world 00:11:24.79\00:11:27.62 who are praying for them 00:11:27.65\00:11:29.09 and doing their best to help them. 00:11:29.12\00:11:30.69 Prayers are not inconsequential. 00:11:30.72\00:11:32.32 We have to believe the Bible says, 00:11:32.35\00:11:34.41 "A God, He is the prayer of the righteous man." 00:11:34.44\00:11:36.66 And you know the story that I thought 00:11:36.69\00:11:38.18 of on their committing before and that was you say it again. 00:11:38.21\00:11:40.47 Remember, Peter was imprisoned 00:11:40.50\00:11:42.24 and the believers gathered to pray for his release. 00:11:42.27\00:11:44.51 Even when he was released they didn't quite believe it, 00:11:44.54\00:11:47.16 but God does providentially release. 00:11:47.19\00:11:50.01 And I think while we work through the legal system, 00:11:50.04\00:11:52.70 I think these elements of Monteiro's eventual release 00:11:52.73\00:11:55.41 that show God's providence. 00:11:55.44\00:11:57.39 Yeah, and you know that was-- you need to be patient 00:11:57.42\00:12:00.28 and Monteiro did such a beautiful work in the prison. 00:12:00.31\00:12:04.14 His testimony was fabulous. 00:12:04.17\00:12:05.97 You know, he gave every, almost every day Bible studies. 00:12:06.00\00:12:09.11 He reached even the former minister 00:12:09.14\00:12:10.79 of the government to give Bible studies to them. 00:12:10.82\00:12:13.67 He was respected by all prisoner. 00:12:13.70\00:12:16.75 He said that when he had to go to the shower 00:12:16.78\00:12:18.93 which was almost a luxury to go there. 00:12:18.96\00:12:21.69 He was protected by five prisoners. 00:12:21.72\00:12:23.95 They say, no, we don't want something happen to you. 00:12:23.98\00:12:27.35 He was-- you know, when he spoke, 00:12:27.38\00:12:29.97 he has people coming. 00:12:30.00\00:12:31.25 A prisoner came in to listen to him, 00:12:31.28\00:12:33.67 that was a fabulous and I think he will let 00:12:33.70\00:12:36.12 such a beautiful testimony in prison but still you know 00:12:36.15\00:12:38.89 you have to be patient because when we visited him, 00:12:38.92\00:12:44.72 you know, the lawyers said to us 00:12:44.75\00:12:46.40 in two days he will be free, 00:12:46.43\00:12:48.28 then after in three days he will be free. 00:12:48.31\00:12:50.94 Oh, next week and next month 00:12:50.97\00:12:53.46 and that next year and it was so long, so long. 00:12:53.49\00:12:57.33 And eventually you have to be very strong, 00:12:57.36\00:12:59.02 but Monteiro said he never, never felt he was alone. 00:12:59.05\00:13:03.04 He had always the presence of God with him. 00:13:03.08\00:13:06.00 And that is an awareness that we need to pass 00:13:06.03\00:13:08.56 on through this program. 00:13:08.59\00:13:10.40 Around the world there are others Seventh-day Adventists 00:13:10.43\00:13:13.34 but just as importantly there are the Christians, 00:13:13.37\00:13:15.57 there are the people of deeply held faith 00:13:15.60\00:13:17.98 who are suffering and imprisoned for their faith. 00:13:18.01\00:13:20.15 We need to keep that in mind 00:13:20.18\00:13:21.34 and even in a country as free as United States 00:13:21.37\00:13:24.36 or Australia where I'm from, not a good dynamic 00:13:24.39\00:13:28.05 to just rest on your hands, well, we are free. 00:13:28.08\00:13:29.87 But there's always someone suffering 00:13:29.90\00:13:32.48 and we need to keep them in mind. 00:13:32.51\00:13:34.43 And that is important to remember 00:13:34.46\00:13:35.96 that there are places around the world 00:13:35.99\00:13:37.88 where just because people are different, 00:13:37.91\00:13:40.50 they have another belief and they are persecuted. 00:13:40.53\00:13:43.69 That would be easy for them 00:13:43.72\00:13:44.94 to say, okay, you know, I recant. 00:13:44.97\00:13:47.39 Why these people especially in some country 00:13:47.42\00:13:49.64 Christian are poor people? 00:13:49.67\00:13:51.62 Why they just said, okay, you know, 00:13:51.65\00:13:53.82 I want to be like other people? 00:13:53.85\00:13:55.37 Why my life should become miserable because of my faith 00:13:55.40\00:14:00.08 but they are strong in their faith. 00:14:00.11\00:14:01.77 That's true and I think in the west 00:14:01.80\00:14:03.31 we are sometimes guilty of saying you come, 00:14:03.34\00:14:05.71 take up this faith become Seventh-day Adventist, 00:14:05.74\00:14:08.47 become a Christian and life will improve for you, 00:14:08.50\00:14:10.22 not always not here in now. 00:14:10.25\00:14:12.08 It spiritually improves 00:14:12.11\00:14:13.21 and the promise of the future is wonderful. 00:14:13.24\00:14:15.38 We'll be back after a short break 00:14:15.41\00:14:17.43 to continue this discussion 00:14:17.46\00:14:18.93 of the great experience of Pastor Monteiro, 00:14:18.96\00:14:21.38 but we'll talk a little bit more broadly about 00:14:21.41\00:14:23.42 what it means to stand for your faith. 00:14:23.45\00:14:26.72
