Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:03.43\00:00:05.27 Before the break with guest Dr. John Graz 00:00:05.30\00:00:07.59 we were talking about ecumenism and some of-- 00:00:07.62\00:00:10.00 And religious freedom. 00:00:10.03\00:00:11.07 And religious freedom, 00:00:11.10\00:00:12.13 yes, because they're not one and the same. 00:00:12.16\00:00:15.00 But they intersect very often, particularly 00:00:15.03\00:00:18.06 with their own constituency 00:00:18.09\00:00:19.33 and what they think is going on. 00:00:19.36\00:00:22.39 Ecumenical movement as we've discussed 00:00:22.42\00:00:24.06 is not really dead, but it's changed its-- 00:00:24.09\00:00:27.59 the way that it presents is a little different 00:00:27.62\00:00:29.67 than certainly in the '60s, isn't it? 00:00:29.70\00:00:31.72 Yeah, because, you know, 00:00:31.75\00:00:33.06 in fact you did not have a lot of progress 00:00:33.09\00:00:36.26 in ecumenism in term of if the goal-- 00:00:36.29\00:00:39.15 you know, the goal was really 00:00:39.18\00:00:40.40 to build a uni-- a visible unity 00:00:40.43\00:00:42.84 and still you have the Orthodox Church, 00:00:42.87\00:00:45.57 you have the Protestant, the Liberal Protestant and I-- 00:00:45.60\00:00:48.70 I have to say that it becomes more and more complicated 00:00:48.73\00:00:51.92 because now the problem-- one of the problem 00:00:51.95\00:00:55.59 in the ecumenical circle at the world level 00:00:55.62\00:00:58.29 it's not really adduct, not only doctrinal problem 00:00:58.32\00:01:01.59 which the progress has not been done 00:01:01.62\00:01:04.06 you know, still they are-- 00:01:04.09\00:01:05.74 they have the early-- not together. 00:01:05.77\00:01:08.72 In one side you have the Lutheran, 00:01:08.75\00:01:10.41 in the other side you have the Catholic 00:01:10.44\00:01:11.97 and so Orthodox and so on. 00:01:12.00\00:01:13.83 But it's the ethical problem 00:01:13.86\00:01:16.08 which is really dividing ecumenical world 00:01:16.11\00:01:19.52 between the west and the south 00:01:19.55\00:01:22.24 the ethical problem, it means what-- 00:01:22.27\00:01:24.77 what kind of place do we have to give to the gays 00:01:24.80\00:01:28.08 and the lesbians in the church to authorize-- 00:01:28.11\00:01:31.74 Their differences in doctrinal application. 00:01:31.77\00:01:34.62 Yeah, but that's really a point which divide very strongly 00:01:34.65\00:01:39.49 that the ecumenical world today. 00:01:39.52\00:01:41.68 It means that it's still working, 00:01:41.71\00:01:43.75 the vision is still here, but a lot, lot of challenges 00:01:43.78\00:01:47.35 it doesn't go as people expected. 00:01:47.38\00:01:51.02 But on one level it's even further along 00:01:51.05\00:01:52.84 than people imagine like before the break 00:01:52.87\00:01:55.05 I mentioned Tony Palmer, an ostensibly, 00:01:55.08\00:01:59.64 an Episcopal priest. 00:01:59.67\00:02:00.84 I actually found out 00:02:00.87\00:02:01.99 that the branch of the Episcopal church 00:02:02.02\00:02:04.17 he belongs to is a convergent movement, 00:02:04.20\00:02:07.36 when most of the priests and the adherence 00:02:07.39\00:02:10.07 have come from outside of the Anglic-- 00:02:10.10\00:02:15.09 I think of the Anglican, the Episcopal church 00:02:15.12\00:02:18.43 and they've joined with it, but their agenda is different, 00:02:18.46\00:02:21.30 their practice is different 00:02:21.33\00:02:22.95 so they've really taken on the name. 00:02:22.98\00:02:24.53 But it's a little misleading to think of this 00:02:24.56\00:02:26.44 as the heart land of Episcopal belief. 00:02:26.47\00:02:30.16 But that said, the Church of England 00:02:30.19\00:02:33.70 has gone close enough to Rome now 00:02:33.73\00:02:35.65 that they can actually hold orders 00:02:35.68\00:02:38.65 within the Catholic Church. 00:02:38.68\00:02:40.09 They call it under the ordinariate. 00:02:40.12\00:02:42.92 They're officially part of the Roman Catholic structure, 00:02:42.95\00:02:45.33 so those that are seeing a blending coming from this, 00:02:45.36\00:02:48.97 there's evidence for that. 00:02:49.00\00:02:50.68 But I think it's probably gone as far as it needs to go 00:02:50.71\00:02:54.38 to fulfill any prophetic expectation 00:02:54.41\00:02:57.62 and is probably gone as far as it's logical 00:02:57.65\00:03:00.31 with all of the inhabitations that you mentioned, 00:03:00.34\00:03:02.27 and some of them are just plain organizational. 00:03:02.30\00:03:04.58 Even in the secular world joining two businesses 00:03:04.61\00:03:07.47 is very difficult. 00:03:07.50\00:03:09.17 But usually it's done by just removing one 00:03:09.20\00:03:11.83 and the other joins with it but to mesh two structures-- 00:03:11.86\00:03:16.07 You know, this is why sometime 00:03:16.10\00:03:18.43 when we make so much publicity on some events, 00:03:18.46\00:03:21.31 but in fact you know, 00:03:21.34\00:03:23.16 except when you have on the practical issue, 00:03:23.19\00:03:25.36 you have Lutheran and reform in the same part of the country 00:03:25.39\00:03:30.02 they don't have enough pastor, 00:03:30.05\00:03:32.60 enough to find-- and they put-- they deicide to work together, 00:03:32.63\00:03:36.14 but that's not really the unity we talk about. 00:03:36.17\00:03:38.76 I think really there, the new coming, 00:03:38.79\00:03:41.63 the new way of ecumenist will be 00:03:41.66\00:03:43.99 just the largest the biggest church saying that 00:03:44.02\00:03:46.82 hey, you are losing your time to talk 00:03:46.85\00:03:48.84 and you talk, and you talk, come back home, 00:03:48.87\00:03:51.05 we are ready to welcome you. 00:03:51.08\00:03:53.01 That will be the new wave because, you know, 00:03:53.04\00:03:54.84 the other have been talking and talking and talking 00:03:54.87\00:03:57.58 and for very very very little result 00:03:57.61\00:04:00.67 and more and more problems. 00:04:00.70\00:04:02.73 Our-- And also that some people say that, 00:04:02.76\00:04:05.58 even in a Catholic church they say, 00:04:05.61\00:04:07.15 the real unity will come when Jesus come, return. 00:04:07.18\00:04:11.01 And we believe that too, you know, 00:04:11.04\00:04:12.47 when Jesus return you will have one people, 00:04:12.50\00:04:15.29 but I think I long-- as long as you have the freedom-- 00:04:15.32\00:04:17.82 One people of who have come out of here by people. 00:04:17.85\00:04:20.62 Yeah. There-- 00:04:20.65\00:04:21.68 As long as you have the freedom to choose. 00:04:21.71\00:04:24.88 Well, religious liberty that's what we're all about. 00:04:24.91\00:04:26.56 Yeah, as long as you have 00:04:26.59\00:04:28.66 religious freedom they would very difficult. 00:04:28.69\00:04:29.77 I'll say this for our viewers, but I know you agree with me. 00:04:29.80\00:04:32.58 When you talk about religious liberty, 00:04:32.61\00:04:34.20 you don't need to decide ahead of time 00:04:34.23\00:04:36.32 that this belief is a valid belief system at all, 00:04:36.35\00:04:39.22 it could be the most pernicious, 00:04:39.25\00:04:41.96 crazy, trumped up, [] believe possible, 00:04:41.99\00:04:45.15 but the mere fact that someone is called to that 00:04:45.18\00:04:47.19 their conscience drives them to it, 00:04:47.22\00:04:48.90 you have to defend their right to have it and hold it. 00:04:48.93\00:04:51.81 Yeah. 00:04:51.84\00:04:52.91 And you justify the whole principle of religious liberty 00:04:52.94\00:04:55.80 in every case not just one that you feel comfortable with. 00:04:55.83\00:04:58.62 Yeah, and this is why, you know, in history 00:04:58.65\00:05:01.14 unity have been always imposed. 00:05:01.17\00:05:04.41 It has never been the result of discussion 00:05:04.44\00:05:07.20 between both or three sides and so on. 00:05:07.23\00:05:09.82 It has been imposed, it means the unity will happen 00:05:09.85\00:05:14.11 according to what we believe on the prophecy 00:05:14.14\00:05:16.28 will be imposed by the power of the state. 00:05:16.31\00:05:19.00 And at this time you will have no religious freedom. 00:05:19.03\00:05:21.70 This is why it's so important to defend religious freedom 00:05:21.73\00:05:24.57 to give the possibility to people. 00:05:24.60\00:05:26.52 You want to join another church you are free to do that. 00:05:26.55\00:05:29.89 You are not-- You want to stay as you are, 00:05:29.92\00:05:32.10 you are free to do that and we protect your freedom. 00:05:32.13\00:05:34.96 You want to be part of [], 00:05:34.99\00:05:36.90 you are free as long as you don't threat the society 00:05:36.93\00:05:39.72 and the life of people. 00:05:39.75\00:05:41.35 You are free. It means you are not obliged 00:05:41.38\00:05:44.21 to join one church or another, 00:05:44.24\00:05:46.48 you are not obliged to stay in one church or to leave. 00:05:46.51\00:05:50.14 You know, you are free. 00:05:50.17\00:05:51.35 That's totally different than unity which would be imposed. 00:05:51.38\00:05:56.26 Let's talk about one aspect of ecumenism 00:05:56.29\00:05:59.51 or the ecumenical dynamic that I've observed, 00:05:59.54\00:06:02.81 it's coming to an end in one way 00:06:02.84\00:06:05.46 because there's been a change of Popes 00:06:05.49\00:06:08.77 but Benedict definitely structured the whole dynamic 00:06:08.80\00:06:13.82 as people of faith opposed to secularism. 00:06:13.85\00:06:17.52 And you can see that even in the United States 00:06:17.55\00:06:19.85 with the Protestant activists. 00:06:19.88\00:06:22.73 They saw the great enemy as secularism 00:06:22.76\00:06:25.37 and that's an instant coming together 00:06:25.40\00:06:27.30 of Roman Catholic political interests, 00:06:27.33\00:06:30.07 whole gambit of Protestant interests 00:06:30.10\00:06:31.91 and so to oppose the secular movement 00:06:31.94\00:06:35.92 and calling it even a religion. 00:06:35.95\00:06:37.79 That's been a great effort in the United States 00:06:37.82\00:06:39.23 say the secularism is a religion. 00:06:39.26\00:06:42.12 And I think with Benedict 00:06:42.15\00:06:44.44 he's moving on to a different approach, 00:06:44.47\00:06:46.48 but there's no question that this did create 00:06:46.51\00:06:49.00 or defect a union of most of the main line Protestant 00:06:49.03\00:06:52.74 and Catholic Churches or Catholic Church 00:06:52.77\00:06:56.80 who were unified with this common purpose 00:06:56.83\00:06:58.59 to oppose secularism. 00:06:58.62\00:06:59.94 Sometimes abortion, anti-abortion efforts, 00:06:59.97\00:07:04.36 other times creationism and so on but they were-- 00:07:04.39\00:07:09.02 they had a united front and they were not always wrong 00:07:09.05\00:07:10.80 in the things they did, 00:07:10.83\00:07:11.87 but that tended to make a single monolithic entity 00:07:11.90\00:07:16.53 out of Christian believers. 00:07:16.56\00:07:19.48 There are, there are also some other priority, 00:07:19.51\00:07:22.01 maybe not priority but concern, you know, 00:07:22.04\00:07:25.50 like your Pentecostal in, in South America 00:07:25.53\00:07:28.60 is one of the concern 00:07:28.63\00:07:29.66 it has been mentioned very, very often. 00:07:29.69\00:07:32.03 A concern for Rome, you know, 00:07:32.06\00:07:33.52 because the Pentecostal and Evangelical 00:07:33.55\00:07:35.48 are growing in traditionally Catholic countries 00:07:35.51\00:07:38.51 and you have Islam also, the place of Islam. 00:07:38.54\00:07:41.06 Of course, when you put secularism as number one 00:07:41.09\00:07:44.23 you have a chance to lead a coalition. 00:07:44.26\00:07:48.70 The question is, do we want to be part of this coalition? 00:07:48.74\00:07:51.31 That's always, you know, the political game. 00:07:51.35\00:07:54.84 You know, and I think that secularism 00:07:54.87\00:07:56.61 has always been, is a challenge too, 00:07:56.65\00:07:59.49 but there are also many other challenge we have to face. 00:07:59.52\00:08:02.45 But when you talk about religious freedom, 00:08:02.48\00:08:04.44 you also put the limit to secularism. 00:08:04.47\00:08:06.83 Secularism has, as it come-- 00:08:06.86\00:08:08.96 become a religion, should not persecute people 00:08:08.99\00:08:12.55 even on behalf of human rights. 00:08:12.58\00:08:14.20 Of course, part of the dynamic in the United States 00:08:14.23\00:08:16.23 and I haven't much discussed this on this program, 00:08:16.26\00:08:18.76 but it's a setup because for religious activists, 00:08:18.79\00:08:23.25 Protestants and some Catholics, to claim 00:08:23.28\00:08:25.91 that secularism is really a religion 00:08:25.94\00:08:29.20 and yet it gets access to government it-- 00:08:29.23\00:08:32.48 it is government funded education 00:08:32.51\00:08:37.26 in Darwinism and so on. 00:08:37.29\00:08:39.51 But here, this is really a false religion 00:08:39.54\00:08:41.52 being supported by the state where it should be expelled. 00:08:41.55\00:08:43.62 Yeah. 00:08:43.65\00:08:44.74 To me it's a straw man argument, 00:08:44.77\00:08:46.16 but the other day I had to rethink of it a little 00:08:46.19\00:08:48.80 because I had a representative from my office, 00:08:48.83\00:08:50.53 he's written an article for Liberty arguing 00:08:50.56\00:08:54.55 that the atheists need to have chaplains in the military. 00:08:54.58\00:08:59.06 That theirs is really the religion of man 00:08:59.09\00:09:01.20 and they need equal representation. 00:09:01.23\00:09:03.21 I believe it's a mistake for them to talk that way 00:09:03.24\00:09:05.39 because they're actually playing into the hands 00:09:05.42\00:09:08.43 of the ecumenical front of religionists 00:09:08.46\00:09:11.35 who would, in a way, try to get into government 00:09:11.38\00:09:14.50 for equal time believing and saying 00:09:14.53\00:09:16.39 that secularism is also a religious stands. 00:09:16.42\00:09:21.05 Oh, you know, probably one day it may be accepted 00:09:21.08\00:09:24.05 as a religion you know, who knows, 00:09:24.08\00:09:26.55 but still we have to learn how to live together 00:09:26.58\00:09:30.37 but every side, every side 00:09:30.40\00:09:32.46 and not just on the religious side. 00:09:32.49\00:09:33.99 We saw the effect of religious fanatics 00:09:34.02\00:09:37.43 of persecution centuries of persecution. 00:09:37.46\00:09:40.44 We saw also the effect of radical secularism, 00:09:40.47\00:09:43.42 radical atheist the same thing, you know, 00:09:43.45\00:09:46.22 million and million of people were killed. 00:09:46.25\00:09:48.99 Yeah, they kill people just because they were believers. 00:09:49.02\00:09:51.67 And we-- You need-- The world today 00:09:51.70\00:09:53.59 need to have a strong voice saying, 00:09:53.62\00:09:55.26 no, that's not the way we should follow. 00:09:55.29\00:09:57.57 Let people their freedom to decide 00:09:57.60\00:10:00.50 and but not only the freedom to decide, the freedom 00:10:00.53\00:10:03.27 to receive the information to decide. 00:10:03.30\00:10:05.30 And in many ways while the world 00:10:05.33\00:10:07.31 is deteriorating on many fronts, 00:10:07.34\00:10:09.32 just this understanding that there's more respect 00:10:09.35\00:10:11.36 for an individual's right to determine 00:10:11.39\00:10:13.19 their spiritual agenda, that is a great improvement. 00:10:13.22\00:10:15.51 Yeah, yeah, this is what religious freedom 00:10:15.54\00:10:17.65 is different that-- ecumenism they are-- 00:10:17.68\00:10:22.56 Do you know, you have another agenda 00:10:22.59\00:10:24.05 when you defend religious freedom, 00:10:24.08\00:10:25.64 and this is why I think is so important 00:10:25.67\00:10:27.41 to the defend religious freedom, 00:10:27.44\00:10:29.01 because you're putting the right of people 00:10:29.04\00:10:30.78 to decide what they want to do with their life, 00:10:30.81\00:10:33.50 with their conscience and that is, again 00:10:33.53\00:10:36.21 and I repeat, gift coming from God. 00:10:36.24\00:10:39.88 The last prayer of Jesus to His Father, 00:10:39.91\00:10:42.94 but in front of His few followers there 00:10:42.97\00:10:44.84 before His crucifixion was that they all may be one. 00:10:44.87\00:10:50.06 So when we speak about ecumenism, 00:10:50.09\00:10:53.00 while many people are suspicious of it, 00:10:53.03\00:10:55.29 the root, yearning, 00:10:55.32\00:10:57.09 the Jesus expressed is not wrong. 00:10:57.12\00:10:59.18 Christians are to be one, but they are to be one 00:10:59.21\00:11:02.08 in the spirit and knowledge of God. 00:11:02.11\00:11:04.22 They're not to be one glossing over all the differences 00:11:04.25\00:11:07.55 that have developed among men about 00:11:07.58\00:11:09.49 interpretation of truth or execution of it 00:11:09.52\00:11:12.72 through different organizations. 00:11:12.75\00:11:14.78 Those things can be very much opposed to truth, 00:11:14.81\00:11:18.00 and to ecumenically unite on those 00:11:18.03\00:11:22.56 is nothing but syncretism, to use another difficult word. 00:11:22.59\00:11:25.14 I know some people choke on these large words. 00:11:25.17\00:11:28.63 What we are called toward 00:11:28.66\00:11:30.64 is a unity with God in truth and in sprit. 00:11:30.67\00:11:33.68 What we're seeing in the world around us 00:11:33.71\00:11:35.39 very often is compromise. 00:11:35.42\00:11:37.23 There are well meaning efforts 00:11:37.26\00:11:39.04 and there are rather dangerous efforts 00:11:39.07\00:11:42.46 to sort of amalgamate even the old church of Rome, 00:11:42.49\00:11:46.72 and the new despaired churches of Protestantism. 00:11:46.75\00:11:50.06 We need to be careful with all of this sort of ecumenism. 00:11:50.09\00:11:53.89 Thank you for being with us 00:11:53.92\00:11:55.29 this is Lincoln Steed for Liberty Insider.
