Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:02.82\00:00:05.48 Again this is Lincoln Steed, editor of the Liberty Magazine 00:00:05.51\00:00:08.10 with my guests John Graz. 00:00:08.13\00:00:10.31 And before the break, John, 00:00:10.34\00:00:11.37 we were riffing on a bit about one particular area 00:00:11.40\00:00:14.78 of the world at the moment the Ukraine 00:00:14.81\00:00:16.96 and of course the annexation there of the Crimean peninsula, 00:00:16.99\00:00:22.16 but the religious liberty situation 00:00:22.19\00:00:23.98 is pretty broad based, isn't it? 00:00:24.01\00:00:25.17 There is lot going on, 00:00:25.20\00:00:26.78 and what's another country that you can think of right now that 00:00:26.81\00:00:31.55 what's commenting on that 00:00:31.58\00:00:33.32 this is a very interesting religious dynamic. 00:00:33.35\00:00:35.87 Yeah, you know, you have always the same, 00:00:35.90\00:00:37.68 more or less the same country like North Korea, 00:00:37.71\00:00:39.93 Saudi Arabia, Middle East where you have tension 00:00:39.96\00:00:43.53 and somewhere you have still persecution 00:00:43.56\00:00:45.74 of minorities like the Christians 00:00:45.77\00:00:47.81 are persecuted in several countries. 00:00:47.84\00:00:49.86 But you have also in some part of the world, 00:00:49.89\00:00:51.84 Muslim now who are prosecuted. 00:00:51.87\00:00:53.94 That's interesting that in Africa 00:00:53.97\00:00:56.15 you know, Central Africa Republic 00:00:56.18\00:00:59.30 the western power especially the French 00:00:59.33\00:01:03.02 send military, the army to protect the Muslim 00:01:03.05\00:01:06.92 which were persecuted by the Christian, 00:01:06.95\00:01:09.02 and it becomes really a very complex 00:01:09.05\00:01:11.98 because of course the Christian these country are afraid that 00:01:12.01\00:01:15.19 you know, they will have the same problem 00:01:15.22\00:01:17.89 with the extremist Muslim that they had 00:01:17.92\00:01:20.20 in other countries of Africa like in Nigeria, like Chad 00:01:20.23\00:01:24.94 and some becomes more and more complicated. 00:01:24.97\00:01:28.63 Sometime you have a little light like in Tunisia 00:01:28.66\00:01:32.50 where you know the Muslim-- 00:01:32.53\00:01:33.80 After the Arab Spring 00:01:33.83\00:01:35.19 Yeah Arab Spring and the Muslim Islamic party is in charge, 00:01:35.22\00:01:40.60 but in spite of that the strong reaction of those 00:01:40.63\00:01:43.53 who are in favor of democratic countries, 00:01:43.56\00:01:46.42 made that they put freedom of conscience 00:01:46.45\00:01:49.00 in their constitution that's incredible, 00:01:49.03\00:01:51.41 that's probably the first country in Middle East 00:01:51.44\00:01:53.95 where you have freedom of conscience. 00:01:53.98\00:01:55.62 there are some improvements I don't think we would want 00:01:55.65\00:01:58.73 to characterize Tunisia in its freedom on an absolute level 00:01:58.76\00:02:03.44 say its the United States or France or somewhere, 00:02:03.47\00:02:07.46 but relatively speaking 00:02:07.49\00:02:08.76 compared to some of the surroundings countries 00:02:08.79\00:02:10.39 that's wonderful gleam of light, isn't it? 00:02:10.42\00:02:12.68 You know, you are always to remember that 00:02:12.71\00:02:15.80 that's not done once for all, 00:02:15.83\00:02:18.49 it means you have always the possibility to react. 00:02:18.52\00:02:20.70 That's very difficult 00:02:20.73\00:02:22.19 and its very unique about Tunisia and about Middle East. 00:02:22.22\00:02:25.22 They're really the trans today in favor of religious freedom. 00:02:25.25\00:02:30.51 But even you know in countries like Vietnam, 00:02:30.54\00:02:33.30 you have a pocket of-- 00:02:33.33\00:02:35.24 I will not say religious freedom 00:02:35.27\00:02:37.25 pocket of more freedom where churches can have meeting. 00:02:37.28\00:02:41.78 In China the same, China, can have 00:02:41.81\00:02:43.83 a very strong reaction against religion in some part of China, 00:02:43.86\00:02:49.65 and more liberal politics in some other parts. 00:02:49.68\00:02:53.10 Means we are really when we try to make 00:02:53.13\00:02:55.89 an appreciation about religious freedom in the world 00:02:55.92\00:02:58.43 I should say that the trans is not good 00:02:58.46\00:03:01.72 but they are still some pocket of hope. 00:03:01.75\00:03:04.93 But tell me if I'm right-- 00:03:04.96\00:03:05.99 But we have to you know, to conclude it 00:03:06.02\00:03:08.12 this is why it's so important that in countries 00:03:08.15\00:03:10.65 where we have religious freedom we promote-- 00:03:10.68\00:03:13.51 We protect it. 00:03:13.54\00:03:14.81 We become visible. And be vigilant. 00:03:14.84\00:03:16.57 Be vigilant and we ask our government really 00:03:16.60\00:03:19.73 to do something for those who are persecuted. 00:03:19.76\00:03:22.52 It seems to me you mentioned China, 00:03:22.55\00:03:23.90 and they're many hopeful signs coming out of China 00:03:23.93\00:03:26.94 but under the hardcore communist regime 00:03:26.97\00:03:29.30 there was a serious problem 00:03:29.33\00:03:30.50 because at roots Marxism and communism 00:03:30.53\00:03:34.55 sees religion as a positive evil. 00:03:34.58\00:03:37.09 I mean it's incompatible with this system. 00:03:37.12\00:03:40.40 And China is moved to hybrid system at best 00:03:40.43\00:03:44.33 sort of a new thing we don't know 00:03:44.36\00:03:45.78 but it's certainly a hybrid 00:03:45.81\00:03:47.30 between capitalism and communism. 00:03:47.33\00:03:49.16 Its not as ideological and the persecution 00:03:49.19\00:03:52.09 which does continue its seems to me now, 00:03:52.12\00:03:54.28 its more structural 00:03:54.31\00:03:57.56 if people of faith keep to their on business 00:03:57.59\00:04:01.19 and don't interfere with the governments plans, 00:04:01.22\00:04:02.97 they're not rigorous in opposing them. 00:04:03.00\00:04:05.19 But as long as they allow or they're willing to live 00:04:05.22\00:04:07.88 under a cohesive controlling governmental system, 00:04:07.91\00:04:12.02 and that's where we have the problem now, isn't it? 00:04:12.05\00:04:13.54 Organizational, if they think religion is free lancing 00:04:13.57\00:04:16.96 is meeting without knowledge of the government, 00:04:16.99\00:04:19.24 they can be brutal in China but yet religion is advancing 00:04:19.27\00:04:24.07 with the westernization/ capitalism of China. 00:04:24.10\00:04:29.05 I see it opening things up progressively. 00:04:29.08\00:04:30.70 It means, you know, China as you say 00:04:30.74\00:04:32.15 there are some part of China 00:04:32.18\00:04:33.29 where really religion is booming, 00:04:33.32\00:04:35.93 some other part where they are oppressed. 00:04:35.96\00:04:38.32 You know, it depends where but something which is really, 00:04:38.35\00:04:42.03 you can see more and more 00:04:42.06\00:04:43.41 including in our democratic countries 00:04:43.44\00:04:45.85 or liberal countries is the control of the state. 00:04:45.88\00:04:49.47 You know more and more in some countries, 00:04:49.50\00:04:53.36 where you have a freedom, the state wanted to protect 00:04:53.39\00:04:56.70 against the terrorism and so on and so on. 00:04:56.73\00:04:58.89 And you put in the place, you set up a system 00:04:58.92\00:05:01.72 which at the end wants to control everything, 00:05:01.75\00:05:05.06 including religion 00:05:05.09\00:05:06.30 and of course you'll start with the buyers come and so on, 00:05:06.33\00:05:09.71 and when you're the member of religious minorities 00:05:09.74\00:05:12.23 its very easy to be listed as a bad people 00:05:12.26\00:05:16.17 or potentially bad people. 00:05:16.20\00:05:17.80 And particularly-- 00:05:17.83\00:05:18.86 They're, they are quiet now you know, 00:05:18.89\00:05:20.10 but you know maybe in few years, 00:05:20.13\00:05:22.86 they will become very dangerous and so on, 00:05:22.89\00:05:25.04 and it means you can kind of favor paranoid. 00:05:25.07\00:05:30.27 And at the end it goes, you know, 00:05:30.30\00:05:32.72 on the right direction, to the wrong direction. 00:05:32.75\00:05:34.71 And very often minorities have 00:05:34.74\00:05:36.51 an identification with some other country, 00:05:36.54\00:05:39.73 certainly the case for Christianity in the Middle East 00:05:39.76\00:05:42.20 they would see at us a beachhead in China, 00:05:42.23\00:05:45.28 and beachhead of western influence. 00:05:45.31\00:05:47.53 Very often minority religions, 00:05:47.56\00:05:51.09 have most distinctive belief system 00:05:51.12\00:05:53.52 so may be one or two of their members 00:05:53.55\00:05:54.93 have done something egregious that catches public attention, 00:05:54.96\00:05:57.64 and they sort of look cross ways of them. 00:05:57.67\00:06:00.98 Very often minority religions 00:06:01.01\00:06:02.45 don't socially adhere the same practices 00:06:02.48\00:06:05.10 and in case of Seventh-day Adventist, 00:06:05.13\00:06:07.50 your day of worship 00:06:07.53\00:06:10.24 is not the normal down day for the economy, 00:06:10.27\00:06:12.49 so you seen is disruptive to governmental plan. 00:06:12.52\00:06:14.79 We saw that in the southern part of Mexico 00:06:14.82\00:06:16.76 and Chiapas, you know-- Yes, absolutely yes. 00:06:16.79\00:06:18.63 The evangelical and the Adventist 00:06:18.66\00:06:20.36 did not support the festival, the traditional festival, 00:06:20.39\00:06:24.01 and they were treated as enemy of the culture, 00:06:24.04\00:06:26.59 enemy of the traditions. 00:06:26.62\00:06:28.02 And then the other things that we've passed on before, 00:06:28.05\00:06:30.50 we needed to state it again, 00:06:30.53\00:06:31.74 very often minorities within the culture are picked on 00:06:31.77\00:06:35.04 the by the majority religions in the state 00:06:35.07\00:06:37.15 who may not have horse in that race per say 00:06:37.18\00:06:41.42 but they see or hear within our culture 00:06:41.45\00:06:44.22 these people are at war with many of our good citizens 00:06:44.25\00:06:48.58 something must be wrong, that's just religious rivalry. 00:06:48.61\00:06:51.31 You know, it has always been the case, 00:06:51.34\00:06:53.15 you remember the situation 00:06:53.18\00:06:55.52 when part of Europe become Protestant, 00:06:55.55\00:06:58.45 and the other part you know, strongly catholic. 00:06:58.48\00:07:01.29 It means the Protestant in a catholic countries were 00:07:01.32\00:07:04.05 accused to have a special links with the Protestant countries, 00:07:04.08\00:07:08.38 and sometime that was correct 00:07:08.41\00:07:10.40 because they had no chance to survive 00:07:10.43\00:07:12.26 without receiving help that was specially the French Huguenot 00:07:12.29\00:07:16.43 and that was so strong that 00:07:16.46\00:07:18.29 when the Huguenot came to America for Caroline, 00:07:18.32\00:07:22.85 you know one year later the Spanish came 00:07:22.88\00:07:25.94 and they kill all of them not because they were French 00:07:25.97\00:07:29.68 but because they were Lutherans and that was their crime. 00:07:29.71\00:07:34.41 It means you know, that makes think religion can make things 00:07:34.44\00:07:38.52 very complex on the political level. 00:07:38.55\00:07:40.86 This is why it's so important 00:07:40.89\00:07:42.45 to respect people from different countries. 00:07:42.48\00:07:45.48 You know you can be Baptist, Adventist, Catholic 00:07:45.51\00:07:49.46 but you leave your citizen of these countries, 00:07:49.49\00:07:52.07 you have to be a good citizen of the countries and-- 00:07:52.10\00:07:55.50 That's a good word you use, significant word, respect. 00:07:55.53\00:08:00.28 We don't use tolerance very much, 00:08:00.31\00:08:02.23 you talk about the Huguenots 00:08:02.26\00:08:03.72 there was the acts of toleration in France 00:08:03.75\00:08:07.28 but toleration is a pretty close cousin 00:08:07.31\00:08:10.12 to dislike and even persecution. 00:08:10.15\00:08:14.15 Toleration every time we talk about tolerance 00:08:14.18\00:08:16.30 it means sorry were not able to exterminate you, you are still, 00:08:16.33\00:08:21.63 during two centuries we tried but you are still here, 00:08:21.66\00:08:24.62 now we have to find a solution. 00:08:24.65\00:08:26.37 Okay, until the next time, the next war we tolerate you. 00:08:26.40\00:08:31.31 And of course, this what the first thing that 00:08:31.34\00:08:33.74 Protestant of a son of a pastor in France 00:08:33.77\00:08:36.81 at the revolution say that, 00:08:36.84\00:08:38.89 we don't want to use any longer of the word of toleration 00:08:38.92\00:08:44.75 because that is not toleration that we ask for, 00:08:44.78\00:08:47.60 we ask for freedom, religious freedom and respect. 00:08:47.63\00:08:50.62 Because I think respect goes very close with seeing 00:08:50.65\00:08:53.32 he is an other human being, 00:08:53.35\00:08:55.14 they have the obligations as I have to find God, 00:08:55.17\00:08:57.71 and their way of finding it I may not understand 00:08:57.74\00:09:00.32 but I have to respect and allow, 00:09:00.35\00:09:03.47 and even protect your right to carry on that way. 00:09:03.50\00:09:06.93 But you can understand how its difficult you know, 00:09:06.96\00:09:10.16 when you are a member of religious minorities 00:09:10.19\00:09:13.40 with natural connection with all the countries, 00:09:13.43\00:09:16.98 with people living in another countries 00:09:17.01\00:09:19.72 which may help you to be seen by the majority of the people 00:09:19.75\00:09:24.32 in your own country as traitor 00:09:24.35\00:09:27.29 or potential enemy of this state. 00:09:27.32\00:09:29.81 And you know, you can have one or two problems 00:09:29.84\00:09:32.60 an article in the press and so on 00:09:32.63\00:09:34.46 and you are immediately treated like an enemy. 00:09:34.49\00:09:38.49 Let me ask you an interesting question, 00:09:38.52\00:09:39.92 and I don't think we've even 00:09:39.95\00:09:41.46 gotten under this on this program before, 00:09:41.49\00:09:43.87 but we've had a huge economic, 00:09:43.90\00:09:45.62 global economic collapse in 2008, 00:09:45.65\00:09:48.87 how has that affected religious liberty globally? 00:09:48.90\00:09:51.26 Is that been a help or hinderers to religious liberty? 00:09:51.29\00:09:54.74 Oh that's a difficult question to answer. 00:09:54.77\00:09:57.78 I think kind of crisis may make religious freedom 00:09:57.81\00:10:02.48 more difficult to be defended and promoted. 00:10:02.51\00:10:06.27 It hasn't always destroyed in every country, 00:10:06.30\00:10:08.48 but its raised the stakes I think. 00:10:08.51\00:10:10.88 Yeah, because the reaction of the people 00:10:10.91\00:10:12.46 when you have to face a big crisis 00:10:12.49\00:10:14.30 is to go back their heritage to their tradition and to say, 00:10:14.33\00:10:18.09 and as they did in a past you know, 00:10:18.12\00:10:20.63 we have a problem because we have this people, 00:10:20.66\00:10:23.41 you know the Waldensian, not the Waldensians 00:10:23.44\00:10:26.37 but the Albigensian were exterminated 00:10:26.40\00:10:29.08 its because, you know, 00:10:29.11\00:10:30.21 the country had to face a lot of problem, 00:10:30.24\00:10:32.50 and someone had a vision, the dream and a vision 00:10:32.53\00:10:34.88 and say God is not happy with these heretics. 00:10:34.91\00:10:39.91 So, you know, where we are now? 00:10:39.94\00:10:42.21 Do you think that things are improving, 00:10:42.24\00:10:44.20 that we have reason for hope even as you said before, 00:10:44.23\00:10:46.53 in many countries Middle East for example 00:10:46.56\00:10:48.53 I think it's going the wrong direction 00:10:48.56\00:10:50.25 but is there a reason for hope? 00:10:50.28\00:10:52.49 I think that there is reason of hope all the time, 00:10:52.52\00:10:55.87 especially I should say that 00:10:55.90\00:10:58.13 we know that I will be more and more difficult, 00:10:58.16\00:11:00.27 but we have to continue because you know, 00:11:00.30\00:11:02.51 in defending religious freedom we show that 00:11:02.54\00:11:05.41 we believe in a God who love us and that is important. 00:11:05.44\00:11:09.63 We also show to people that we follow Jesus 00:11:09.66\00:11:12.52 and Jesus respected religious freedom for all. 00:11:12.55\00:11:16.56 The Bible presents a very interesting view 00:11:16.59\00:11:19.42 of the over site of heaven 00:11:19.45\00:11:21.40 and of Gods agents in human history. 00:11:21.43\00:11:24.25 In fact on one occasion the angel told Daniel 00:11:24.28\00:11:26.84 that he'd been contending with the prince of Persia 00:11:26.87\00:11:29.55 but he had resisted him. 00:11:29.58\00:11:31.38 When we look back on some of the recent wars, 00:11:31.41\00:11:33.70 the great World Wars I and II, 00:11:33.73\00:11:36.95 it sort of obvious that things got out of control, 00:11:36.98\00:11:39.64 and in spite of the political realities 00:11:39.67\00:11:41.62 the alliances started to kick in 00:11:41.65\00:11:44.30 and one country after another cascaded toward war. 00:11:44.33\00:11:48.26 The war though that I think is relevant and most interesting 00:11:48.29\00:11:52.02 in religious liberty is the war that preceded them, 00:11:52.05\00:11:54.69 the Crimean war where on a matter of religion 00:11:54.72\00:11:57.59 and who was to be the defender of the faith 00:11:57.62\00:12:00.38 for Christians in the Middle East, 00:12:00.41\00:12:02.04 the great political and religious powers 00:12:02.07\00:12:04.79 of the time went to war in the Crimean, 00:12:04.82\00:12:07.36 on the Crimean Peninsula in a bitter war, 00:12:07.39\00:12:10.41 where hundreds of thousands of lives were lost 00:12:10.44\00:12:12.46 and not much was gain, 00:12:12.49\00:12:14.49 but all in the name of religion and religious championship. 00:12:14.52\00:12:18.68 We need to remember today 00:12:18.71\00:12:20.07 that often there is a religious dynamic to events. 00:12:20.10\00:12:22.91 We need to keep our eyes open to the movement 00:12:22.94\00:12:26.00 not just of wicked and sinful man 00:12:26.03\00:12:28.69 but to the influences of angels. 00:12:28.72\00:12:30.99 For religious liberty, for Liberty Insider 00:12:31.02\00:12:33.93 this is Lincoln Steed.
