Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.55\00:00:08.33 Before the break with guest Ambassador Robert Seiple. 00:00:08.36\00:00:13.17 We had started off talking about the Arab Spring 00:00:13.20\00:00:15.08 and we're getting very philosophical I think, 00:00:15.11\00:00:16.96 we're endeavoring some parallels to the reformation 00:00:16.99\00:00:19.81 and all parallels break down eventually 00:00:19.84\00:00:21.78 but they could perhaps shed some light on the situation. 00:00:21.81\00:00:26.08 And many people have said it's not new to this discussion 00:00:26.11\00:00:28.70 that perhaps Islam and the Islamic world 00:00:28.73\00:00:31.89 the Arab world certainly might need 00:00:31.92\00:00:34.30 something dynamically like the reformation. 00:00:34.33\00:00:38.84 But what do you think about that is, 00:00:38.87\00:00:40.23 what could change the status quo oh, 00:00:40.26\00:00:42.87 not the status quo there are no status quo 00:00:42.90\00:00:44.50 what could change these intractable dynamics 00:00:44.53\00:00:47.49 in the Middle East? 00:00:47.52\00:00:48.55 Well, of course meant properly. 00:00:49.93\00:00:51.73 On a religious front? Yeah. 00:00:51.76\00:00:53.82 These are always difficult issues 00:00:53.85\00:00:56.00 if we haven't been able to figure it out in 2,000 years 00:00:56.03\00:00:59.11 and may be its going to take a little bit 00:00:59.14\00:01:00.37 more than the next 20 minutes. 00:01:00.40\00:01:02.73 But of course we always wanted to try the... 00:01:02.76\00:01:08.07 something has to happen in the leadership overall 00:01:08.10\00:01:11.89 of the Islamic faith and they have to get 00:01:11.92\00:01:15.38 to that point on their own. 00:01:15.41\00:01:17.61 If they're plotted by non-Muslims 00:01:17.64\00:01:20.49 it just won't happen. 00:01:20.52\00:01:22.30 So they've got a come to a point where they say, 00:01:22.33\00:01:24.83 look, if we're going to make any sense out of our faith 00:01:24.86\00:01:28.54 and have it be an attractive faith. 00:01:28.57\00:01:31.85 So right now it's not an attractive faith. 00:01:31.88\00:01:35.05 You're told what you can't do 00:01:35.08\00:01:37.65 and if you do a certain thing then you're cast out 00:01:37.68\00:01:40.38 or you're head comes off or something. 00:01:40.41\00:01:43.49 And it's hard to turn into attractive faith. 00:01:43.52\00:01:46.81 I had a, I had a discussio in Moscow once 00:01:46.84\00:01:49.83 with head of the Orthodox Church though, 00:01:49.86\00:01:52.57 the Russian Orthodox Church and the Islamic head 00:01:52.60\00:01:58.05 Imam of Moscow. 00:01:58.08\00:02:00.29 And there was a time when we were bombing Kasimov. 00:02:00.32\00:02:04.43 So people were against the United States 00:02:04.46\00:02:06.87 for doing what it was doing 00:02:06.90\00:02:07.97 and not doing enough of what they were doing. 00:02:08.00\00:02:09.63 And so I was talking to both someone from the orthodox faith 00:02:09.66\00:02:12.76 and someone from the Muslim faith 00:02:12.79\00:02:14.28 what should have had different points of view towards to me. 00:02:14.31\00:02:18.06 But in Russia they hung together, they stand together 00:02:18.09\00:02:21.73 and conspire sometimes with the government 00:02:21.76\00:02:24.64 to get put something into motion. 00:02:24.67\00:02:27.32 And I remember the Imam saying 00:02:27.35\00:02:29.79 we need to get our market share up. 00:02:29.82\00:02:33.06 And I said what does it say about your theology? 00:02:33.09\00:02:36.36 When you are talking to market share. 00:02:36.39\00:02:37.73 Yeah, about market share self interest from the unity. 00:02:37.76\00:02:39.49 Yeah, and so the theology it had nothing to do 00:02:39.52\00:02:45.32 with the direction he wanted his faith to go and vice versa. 00:02:45.35\00:02:49.98 And somehow this is true of all faiths. 00:02:50.01\00:02:53.34 All faiths have to be making a positive contribution 00:02:53.37\00:02:57.59 because values and interest come together for the individual 00:02:57.62\00:03:02.18 who wants to be a practitioner of that particular faith. 00:03:02.21\00:03:05.62 And it if that happens you can be pulled off 00:03:05.65\00:03:08.68 in many, many directions. 00:03:08.71\00:03:10.62 And this has what happened in the Sunni, Shia divide. 00:03:10.65\00:03:13.86 Something that happened back in the 6th Century 00:03:13.89\00:03:15.87 is pulling people apart and creating an identity 00:03:15.90\00:03:19.49 that is not amenable to other. 00:03:19.52\00:03:23.10 And that's true and even as you're saying market share 00:03:23.13\00:03:25.96 it just strikes me that's heading peerlessly 00:03:25.99\00:03:29.28 close to what even we have tried within this country. 00:03:29.31\00:03:31.95 Religious groups seeking in essence political power 00:03:31.98\00:03:36.50 I think if it's ever to sold it will have to be sold 00:03:36.53\00:03:39.92 on the personal level not by the leadership of Islam 00:03:39.95\00:03:43.01 any more than the leadership of Christianity. 00:03:43.04\00:03:45.86 You know the reformation could never be resolved 00:03:45.89\00:03:48.81 by the Pope and Martin Luther 00:03:48.84\00:03:51.54 personally discussing something. 00:03:51.57\00:03:53.25 It was bigger than that. 00:03:53.28\00:03:54.97 And even if in some magic way that I think 00:03:55.00\00:03:58.62 this of have interest in your comment. 00:03:58.65\00:04:00.81 If some key figures in Islam and its hard to find them 00:04:00.84\00:04:04.59 because there is no Pope, 00:04:04.62\00:04:06.23 there is no head of the southern Baptist 00:04:06.26\00:04:10.46 or whatever the best you can come up with in qualm 00:04:10.49\00:04:13.60 they might be a recognized seminary 00:04:13.63\00:04:16.50 that trains most of the clerics in one country in Iran. 00:04:16.53\00:04:20.33 But even if you could if the people are on chase 00:04:20.36\00:04:23.67 you would have the same trouble, wouldn't you. 00:04:23.70\00:04:25.89 The issue as it I believe with Islam 00:04:25.92\00:04:28.49 its community attitude and cultural expression 00:04:28.52\00:04:32.03 of their religious faith. 00:04:32.06\00:04:33.60 And from our religious liberty perspective 00:04:33.63\00:04:35.93 we somehow need to communicate to large swats 00:04:35.96\00:04:38.75 of the population in the whole world 00:04:38.78\00:04:40.39 but we are talking about this part 00:04:40.42\00:04:43.33 that it should be more than tolerance 00:04:43.36\00:04:45.35 which Quran does talk about. 00:04:45.38\00:04:46.84 You know this Dhimmi the tribute 00:04:46.87\00:04:48.52 that you had to pay to Islamic country. 00:04:48.55\00:04:50.44 There should be recognition that another faith 00:04:50.47\00:04:52.59 has the same human dignity right under heaven 00:04:52.62\00:04:55.23 and under Allah or God then anyone else. 00:04:55.26\00:04:58.95 1948, the nations of the world got together, 00:04:58.98\00:05:02.55 the religions of the world got together 00:05:02.58\00:05:05.04 and they put together something called 00:05:05.07\00:05:06.59 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 00:05:06.62\00:05:07.97 Yeah, I was gonna have you reiterate that 00:05:08.00\00:05:09.45 when you mentioned at the first time. 00:05:09.48\00:05:12.14 And in that in the Article 18 00:05:12.17\00:05:14.25 it talks about religious freedom. 00:05:14.28\00:05:16.37 It talks about the ability to share ones faith 00:05:16.40\00:05:19.53 to change ones faith. 00:05:19.56\00:05:21.14 Which is very important. 00:05:21.17\00:05:22.73 And now today, I mean that was voted, voted 00:05:22.76\00:05:25.71 and after a lot of discussion Eleanor Roosevelt voted to do 00:05:25.74\00:05:29.14 and we go that voted in. 00:05:29.17\00:05:31.59 Today that would be voted down. 00:05:31.62\00:05:34.59 We couldn't put it to a vote. 00:05:34.62\00:05:36.39 We can't even talk about it. 00:05:36.42\00:05:38.34 Apparently that's because we never talked about why. 00:05:38.37\00:05:42.40 We talked about the what it had to incurred 00:05:42.43\00:05:44.92 but we never talked about the motivating factors. 00:05:44.95\00:05:47.99 Why do you believe this?[] 00:05:48.02\00:05:50.11 And so that was left out. 00:05:50.14\00:05:52.02 And I think once you leave out that motivating factor, 00:05:52.05\00:05:54.76 you know, for the Christian it's very clear. 00:05:54.79\00:05:58.35 God loves me has a plan for our lives. 00:05:58.38\00:06:00.71 Okay, it's very clear but if you take 00:06:00.74\00:06:03.04 that out together it begins to fall apart. 00:06:03.07\00:06:05.56 It begins to lose its power. 00:06:05.59\00:06:07.98 And so you have a document today that is not only powerless 00:06:08.01\00:06:13.13 it won't pass muster in a global vote. 00:06:13.16\00:06:16.99 Well, and the UN as even come up with that 00:06:17.02\00:06:18.93 I don't think they were passed 00:06:18.96\00:06:19.99 but wasn't they were deformation of religion initiative 00:06:20.02\00:06:24.71 that it seemed be rank added to it. 00:06:24.74\00:06:26.48 They would severe international penalties against 00:06:26.51\00:06:30.70 speaking or acting against 00:06:30.73\00:06:31.96 the interest of another religion. 00:06:31.99\00:06:34.46 That is very close to the blasphemy laws in Pakistan. 00:06:34.49\00:06:37.52 Right, yeah. 00:06:37.55\00:06:38.58 Well, had its origin in some of the part of the world. 00:06:38.61\00:06:41.60 And the blasphemy laws are terrible. 00:06:41.63\00:06:43.96 If you have a score to settle with someone 00:06:43.99\00:06:46.37 all you have to do is say he desecrated the Quran. 00:06:46.40\00:06:50.17 And then crowd of youths whatever comes 00:06:50.20\00:06:53.53 and they burned down the man shop. 00:06:53.56\00:06:55.21 Well there goes the competition. 00:06:55.24\00:06:56.58 I accomplished what I wanted. 00:06:56.61\00:06:58.11 And that sounds simplistic but unfortunately 00:06:58.14\00:07:00.47 that's how they work to put them. 00:07:00.50\00:07:01.53 But we have a case of a Seventh-day Adventist 00:07:01.56\00:07:03.39 in Pakistan. 00:07:03.42\00:07:04.54 At the moment he is jail on-appeal for a life sentence 00:07:04.57\00:07:08.05 for blasphemy he is very lucky because the penalty 00:07:08.08\00:07:10.74 could have been death. 00:07:10.77\00:07:12.67 But it was just over a romantic rivalry 00:07:12.70\00:07:15.75 he fell in love with this girl, he wasn't able to marry her 00:07:15.78\00:07:18.21 because the parents promised her 00:07:18.24\00:07:19.48 to some more wealthy person living in England. 00:07:19.51\00:07:21.99 He made the mistake of making a few phone calls 00:07:22.02\00:07:24.81 to his once fiancA and the husband reported him said 00:07:24.84\00:07:30.18 that he'd maligned Islam. 00:07:30.21\00:07:32.41 And it's unclear to us how he really did that 00:07:32.44\00:07:34.95 but on that alarm that charger alarm to get a rid of rival 00:07:34.98\00:07:38.64 he was sent to prison and convicted for life. 00:07:38.67\00:07:42.78 Well, what you have in Pakistan unfortunately 00:07:42.81\00:07:45.51 and some parts of India an environment of impunity. 00:07:45.54\00:07:48.49 You can do these things and get away with it. 00:07:49.77\00:07:52.47 And when you use that sense of justice 00:07:52.50\00:07:55.46 you lose a great deal of hope in all kinds 00:07:55.49\00:07:58.24 of intolerant behavior are allowed to go forth. 00:07:58.27\00:08:02.40 And so the blasphemy law is not good for anyone. 00:08:02.43\00:08:06.42 I think your point is very correct. 00:08:06.45\00:08:08.24 The universal declaration wonderful statement 00:08:08.27\00:08:11.15 in someway its small far reaching and high minded 00:08:11.18\00:08:16.72 then the religion clauses in the US Constitution. 00:08:16.75\00:08:20.25 We know what lies behind them. 00:08:20.28\00:08:22.26 But it's a wonderful statement 00:08:22.29\00:08:23.80 but may be its not enforceable 00:08:23.83\00:08:26.10 or universally accepted as it once was. 00:08:26.13\00:08:29.01 And yet is there room for hope. 00:08:29.04\00:08:31.92 I you have told me already you're a great optimist. 00:08:31.95\00:08:36.06 Well I have been optimist. 00:08:36.09\00:08:37.26 In the Middle East Arab Spring has gone a bit sore. 00:08:37.29\00:08:42.57 But is there any light at the end of the tunnel 00:08:42.60\00:08:45.41 that we can see out of this, this maelstrom perhaps 00:08:45.44\00:08:48.45 there is some yearnings toward some sort of religion freedom, 00:08:48.48\00:08:52.90 some sort of-- we needn't to be happy 00:08:52.93\00:08:54.99 they have tolerance wouldn't we in some places 00:08:55.02\00:08:56.93 which is a bad word 00:08:56.96\00:08:58.43 for religious freedom, generally. 00:08:58.46\00:09:01.00 The question is where do you look for hope. 00:09:01.03\00:09:03.59 Now if you look to the United Nations for hope 00:09:03.62\00:09:05.60 we just described in 1948 agreement 00:09:05.63\00:09:07.85 that were no longer past muster. 00:09:07.88\00:09:09.92 And if you look at the agreements 00:09:09.95\00:09:11.13 that came since then international covenants 00:09:11.16\00:09:15.32 they all began to kind of slide down 00:09:15.35\00:09:17.54 the slippery slope. 00:09:17.57\00:09:18.60 Now do you think part of it 00:09:18.63\00:09:19.73 and we are running out of time here 00:09:19.76\00:09:21.01 but when the universal declaration was passed 00:09:21.04\00:09:23.86 there was a much more membership in United Nations. 00:09:23.89\00:09:26.02 It's the mix now and not. 00:09:26.05\00:09:28.50 Probably it also came out of the horrific situation 00:09:28.53\00:09:30.99 of World War II. 00:09:31.02\00:09:32.48 And so what can we do? 00:09:32.51\00:09:35.16 Well, it's a desperations, yeah, to do something 00:09:35.19\00:09:36.77 coming together and supposed to kill each 00:09:36.80\00:09:37.83 other in the ways that we destroyed people 00:09:37.86\00:09:40.19 millions of people in World War II. 00:09:40.22\00:09:43.39 You know, where do we go now I mean, 00:09:43.42\00:09:44.81 at least philosophically looking at the, at the Arab Spring. 00:09:44.84\00:09:49.05 Can we hope and see some sort of improvement there? 00:09:49.08\00:09:52.91 We never lose hope but the key to hope 00:09:52.94\00:09:56.35 believing that tomorrows expectations 00:09:56.38\00:09:58.18 are better than reality of today. 00:09:58.21\00:10:00.60 The key to hope is to make sure that we got enough time 00:10:00.63\00:10:05.88 to do diligence and to work with the system 00:10:05.91\00:10:08.59 and to give it our best shot 00:10:08.62\00:10:10.84 and their hope may have a chance otherwise may be not. 00:10:10.87\00:10:15.22 A few years ago when I was studying history 00:10:18.73\00:10:20.87 I remember I had a nicely bound book of European history 00:10:20.90\00:10:25.10 and it was under the overall title "An Age of Revolution." 00:10:25.13\00:10:30.25 When I look at the Middle East particularly I see there 00:10:30.28\00:10:34.18 that we are living indeed or witnessing indeed 00:10:34.21\00:10:36.99 an age of revolution. 00:10:37.02\00:10:39.27 There was change in the air 00:10:39.30\00:10:41.67 but unless there are values presented, 00:10:41.70\00:10:44.04 unless people seek a positive direction 00:10:44.07\00:10:47.47 it will not go in a positive way. 00:10:47.50\00:10:50.82 When I look at Islam and the challenges that, 00:10:50.85\00:10:53.10 that faith has in coming to groups with itself 00:10:53.13\00:10:55.35 and to the modern world and relating to other religions 00:10:55.38\00:10:59.83 I hope and pray that the Arab Spring 00:10:59.86\00:11:02.11 turns into a new beginning not just the apocryphal story 00:11:02.14\00:11:06.67 about the law and his groan. 00:11:06.70\00:11:08.51 And I don't know where my law moral is 00:11:08.54\00:11:10.38 not a weedy patch of civil meltdown. 00:11:10.41\00:11:14.21 We need religious liberty spread far and wide 00:11:14.24\00:11:17.74 and matter of faith no matter of the political situation 00:11:17.77\00:11:21.58 and even the Arab Spring gone wrong 00:11:21.61\00:11:23.90 it can't go right eventually. 00:11:23.93\00:11:25.99
