Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.46\00:00:08.28 Before the break with Ambassador Seiple 00:00:08.31\00:00:10.54 we were pretty much ranging the world 00:00:10.57\00:00:12.98 from trying to get into your perspective 00:00:13.01\00:00:15.19 as the first ambassador-at-large 00:00:15.22\00:00:17.94 for Religious Freedom for the United States. 00:00:17.97\00:00:20.28 And I know you had an incredible experience over many years 00:00:20.31\00:00:23.08 and before that with World Vision 00:00:23.11\00:00:24.42 as the president of the World Vision. 00:00:24.45\00:00:25.68 You were traveling the world and getting a sense of the pulse 00:00:25.71\00:00:29.02 of religious freedom and religious activities 00:00:29.05\00:00:31.46 around the world. 00:00:31.49\00:00:32.71 And we'd been talking about Europe. 00:00:32.74\00:00:34.64 In everyone's mind that's the, 00:00:34.67\00:00:35.93 the place of no religion isn't it. 00:00:35.96\00:00:38.36 But there're religious force there 00:00:38.39\00:00:41.21 and Bosnia and on the fringes of Europe 00:00:41.24\00:00:44.49 they're the Balkans reminded as 00:00:44.52\00:00:46.44 that it's the force to recon with. 00:00:46.47\00:00:48.60 I think we're keeping pretty good eye on Europe. 00:00:48.63\00:00:51.06 We took it right off in the middle of the 1900s 00:00:51.09\00:00:54.44 and then looked what happened 00:00:54.47\00:00:56.11 we had two world wars in that era. 00:00:56.14\00:00:59.28 And then we talk about Bosnia 00:00:59.31\00:01:01.69 I just continued to think that Bosnia 00:01:01.72\00:01:03.86 is the extension of not getting the aftermath 00:01:03.89\00:01:07.22 of World War II, right. 00:01:07.25\00:01:10.07 Slavenka Drakulic a writer writing in the Balkan Express 00:01:10.10\00:01:14.66 had a very chilling comment about Bosnia 00:01:14.69\00:01:18.32 as she looked back at that history 00:01:18.35\00:01:20.43 and realized what was taking place yet again in Europe. 00:01:20.46\00:01:24.39 She said "someone is always a Jew. 00:01:24.42\00:01:27.43 Someone is always a Jew 00:01:27.46\00:01:29.27 and once the concept of otherness 00:01:29.30\00:01:31.35 takes place the unimaginable becomes possible." 00:01:31.38\00:01:35.03 Yeah. There's a prophetic word. 00:01:35.06\00:01:37.38 Very deep way to state this, 00:01:37.41\00:01:41.21 the toxic side of religious conflict. 00:01:41.24\00:01:43.54 The world is not safe with diversity, yeah. 00:01:43.57\00:01:46.77 You know something that I'm sure you are aware 00:01:46.80\00:01:48.31 but probably most of our viewers haven't picked up 00:01:48.34\00:01:50.83 and because the media never say it. 00:01:50.86\00:01:54.17 We are on a war on terrorism its manifests itself 9/11 00:01:54.20\00:01:57.35 of course and follow up wars of the United States. 00:01:57.38\00:02:01.17 We are told over and over again the sense of, 00:02:01.20\00:02:05.03 of hurt from the Islamic world 00:02:05.06\00:02:07.27 things like troupes quartered in Saudi Arabia 00:02:07.30\00:02:10.07 and because the Middle East situation 00:02:10.10\00:02:12.44 and the unresolved Palestinian question. 00:02:12.47\00:02:15.61 But I pick up a lot in the material coming out 00:02:15.64\00:02:20.22 of that world that they've got extensive grievance 00:02:20.25\00:02:22.92 that they were badly done by in the Balkans 00:02:22.95\00:02:25.97 and the Muslims were victimized. 00:02:26.00\00:02:31.44 Now that's not the stance in the US 00:02:31.47\00:02:34.25 or our governments stance we fell-- 00:02:34.28\00:02:36.51 we feel that we tilted toward them 00:02:36.54\00:02:38.83 if there could be anything. 00:02:38.86\00:02:39.89 You know, we rescued the Muslim public. 00:02:39.92\00:02:43.17 Yes, I think I agree but that's not the way it perceived 00:02:43.20\00:02:46.45 in the Muslim world which is very-- 00:02:46.48\00:02:48.00 Well, In Kosovo as well 00:02:48.03\00:02:50.13 we can see the tilt in terms of natural disasters 00:02:50.16\00:02:54.53 where the United States has embodied itself. 00:02:54.56\00:02:59.04 I'm not sure any of these things 00:02:59.07\00:03:01.24 are going to really make the Islamic world 00:03:01.27\00:03:05.92 and it got to be careful because I don't want to categorize 00:03:05.95\00:03:08.98 1.7 billion people as having single mindset. 00:03:09.01\00:03:12.79 That's an intellectually lazy approach 00:03:12.82\00:03:15.95 and its hurt our relationship. 00:03:15.98\00:03:18.54 But even if we fix the Arab Israeli conflict 00:03:18.57\00:03:24.55 and the Palestinian state and so on. 00:03:24.58\00:03:26.66 Even if that gets fixed and we have had a handle it 00:03:26.69\00:03:29.56 I'm not sure any of these issues are going to go away. 00:03:29.59\00:03:31.69 No, probably no. 00:03:31.72\00:03:33.60 Ah, I think we have terrorism 00:03:33.63\00:03:36.99 probably on both sides of some of those issues. 00:03:37.02\00:03:40.49 And for an example as you get closed to the solution in Israel 00:03:40.52\00:03:45.96 you find some of the one throw an hand grenade, 00:03:45.99\00:03:48.42 someone blowing up a pizza parlor, 00:03:48.45\00:03:52.14 someone there is extremism on both sides. Yeah. 00:03:52.17\00:03:55.84 And the only way you get to an end result 00:03:55.87\00:03:58.75 is by upfront very early on a process saying 00:03:58.78\00:04:02.95 we are not going to let 00:04:02.98\00:04:04.49 a terrorist attack undo this negotiation. 00:04:04.52\00:04:07.85 It's too big. 00:04:07.88\00:04:09.36 And unfortunately once that person blows up 00:04:09.39\00:04:12.19 that pizza parlor nobody remembers how it started. 00:04:12.22\00:04:16.11 All they remember is that 00:04:16.14\00:04:18.37 the moderate voice is now silence 00:04:18.40\00:04:21.44 and it's us against them. Yeah. 00:04:21.47\00:04:23.70 And you're saying what I don't know 00:04:23.73\00:04:25.58 that I've said it on this program 00:04:25.61\00:04:26.77 but just as an observer I have lived most of my life in the US 00:04:26.80\00:04:30.40 so on one level I can I hope can't myself as an American 00:04:30.43\00:04:33.72 but I came from Australia 00:04:33.75\00:04:34.95 so, you know, I always have 00:04:34.98\00:04:36.09 a sort of a outsiders viewpoint on it. 00:04:36.12\00:04:39.07 And I think we have done ourselves 00:04:39.10\00:04:41.15 in a justice by responding 00:04:41.18\00:04:42.78 so frantically to terrorist things 00:04:42.81\00:04:47.33 because I think part of solution is to keep our cool 00:04:47.36\00:04:49.94 not to be terrorized, 00:04:49.97\00:04:52.01 because that's the whole point of these people. 00:04:52.04\00:04:53.95 They can't whether its Islamic terrorist 00:04:53.98\00:04:56.65 or before them they're go in the Haganah in Israel 00:04:56.68\00:04:59.61 with dealing the British or the groups in Northern Ireland. 00:04:59.64\00:05:03.46 All terrorist are a minority 00:05:03.49\00:05:05.78 are certainly not in a strong enough position 00:05:05.81\00:05:07.98 to win through their traditional way. 00:05:08.01\00:05:09.87 So they're hoping that they will panic a population 00:05:09.90\00:05:12.18 to lose their cool and to change their direction 00:05:12.21\00:05:14.64 obviously in their favor. 00:05:14.67\00:05:16.61 We don't really have, even though it's been said 00:05:16.64\00:05:19.91 a true existential threat from terrorism we have a disruption. 00:05:19.94\00:05:24.08 And our way of life I think can be protected by us 00:05:24.11\00:05:27.64 not subverted by then 00:05:27.67\00:05:29.12 if we hold on to our values and maintain our cool, 00:05:29.15\00:05:32.92 do certain things that's for the government do 00:05:32.95\00:05:34.50 but not go overboard, not throw 00:05:34.53\00:05:37.80 as you and I have talked a little 00:05:37.83\00:05:38.86 not through the civil liberties may be have with the bathwater. 00:05:38.89\00:05:42.09 We use to say often in the state department 00:05:42.12\00:05:44.74 we got to all work hard to prove Sam Huntington to the wrong. 00:05:44.77\00:05:47.42 Yeah. It's not a clash of civilization. 00:05:47.45\00:05:51.07 Didn't he die a couple of years ago? 00:05:51.10\00:05:52.80 He died without recanting. 00:05:52.83\00:05:55.75 I remember going to a lecture of his 00:05:55.78\00:05:57.20 and here I cam expound on this stuff. 00:05:57.23\00:05:59.29 Well, he would be a believer in the hands of the day 00:05:59.32\00:06:02.22 you suggested before that pessimist always has more facts. 00:06:02.25\00:06:06.10 And you can draw that negative solution that negative scenario, 00:06:06.13\00:06:09.97 you know very easily but I think you got to work very hard 00:06:10.00\00:06:12.47 so that it just doesn't happen. 00:06:12.50\00:06:14.19 And to do that there are two things 00:06:14.22\00:06:17.28 that absolutely have to happen 00:06:17.31\00:06:18.89 and they really very directly 00:06:18.92\00:06:21.63 to how ameliorate the religious freedom issue. 00:06:21.66\00:06:26.49 One is you have to understand your own faith. 00:06:26.52\00:06:29.30 And we can get into this on a big way 00:06:29.33\00:06:31.17 but we are soft in terms of our individual theologies. 00:06:31.20\00:06:35.90 We pick and chose, we have domesticated God, 00:06:35.93\00:06:38.28 we have got lot of things wrong about 00:06:38.31\00:06:40.85 and but we've got to understand why we believe what we believe. 00:06:40.88\00:06:43.68 You know, what you're arguing against 00:06:43.71\00:06:45.14 I think it's that shouldn't be a civil religion, 00:06:45.17\00:06:47.33 it shouldn't be a generic 00:06:47.36\00:06:49.32 national watered down version. I don't know. 00:06:49.35\00:06:51.83 If we need to have our own 00:06:51.86\00:06:53.07 deeply held views and stick with it. 00:06:53.10\00:06:55.29 I mean, Calvary tells us at least one thing 00:06:55.32\00:06:59.02 you never watered it down. 00:06:59.05\00:07:00.63 No. It didn't have a plan B. 00:07:00.66\00:07:02.02 I mean it was there and I was with that 00:07:02.05\00:07:03.68 what was gonna happening. 00:07:03.71\00:07:04.74 But the other thing in addition to understanding is our own 00:07:04.77\00:07:08.58 is respecting the other and we have a long way to go. 00:07:08.61\00:07:12.26 People have talked for decades 00:07:12.29\00:07:13.84 about how we have to tolerate the other 00:07:13.87\00:07:17.93 and that seems such a-- 00:07:17.96\00:07:19.79 I mean I tolerate people I don't know specially care for. 00:07:19.82\00:07:22.40 That's what I tolerate. 00:07:22.43\00:07:23.82 And tolerate is for now 00:07:23.85\00:07:25.45 but when there is a stress toleration disappears 00:07:25.48\00:07:27.82 and then you have got religious warfare 00:07:27.85\00:07:30.27 you have got interpersonal conflict. 00:07:30.30\00:07:33.63 Respect takes us in a totally different direction. 00:07:33.66\00:07:36.56 Respect is based on this communality 00:07:36.59\00:07:38.91 we have this all been created by, by God. 00:07:38.94\00:07:42.53 And the respect that we need to have 00:07:42.56\00:07:44.13 towards one and other comes out of that, 00:07:44.16\00:07:46.82 certainly for the, in the Judea Christian tradition. 00:07:46.85\00:07:49.86 Well, in the United States its interesting 00:07:49.89\00:07:52.27 I agree with you from the Judea Christian tradition 00:07:52.30\00:07:56.12 and our faith that should lead us 00:07:56.15\00:07:57.95 to regard the other as this is important as our 00:07:57.98\00:08:01.29 but the US is the society 00:08:01.32\00:08:03.47 and its government I think is drawing 00:08:03.50\00:08:04.98 just as heavily from a secular almost the human-- 00:08:05.01\00:08:08.17 well, not almost very much a humanistic 00:08:08.20\00:08:11.16 appreciation of the dignity, 00:08:11.19\00:08:12.62 inherent dignity of man as a sentient being. 00:08:12.65\00:08:15.85 And perhaps when you were dealing with other countries 00:08:15.88\00:08:19.61 couldn't you invoke that this as a effectively 00:08:19.64\00:08:21.79 as your own biblical viewpoint 00:08:21.82\00:08:25.33 because when you dealing with the Hindu 00:08:25.36\00:08:27.29 or a Buddhist country 00:08:27.32\00:08:30.47 I mean they might like what you're saying 00:08:30.50\00:08:32.09 from that point of view but its not necessarily 00:08:32.12\00:08:33.84 automatically persuades it 00:08:33.87\00:08:34.97 but we can appeal to a common humanity can't we 00:08:35.00\00:08:38.57 and just the rights that are living a being has. 00:08:38.60\00:08:41.70 Well, I'm saying for everyone understand your own faith 00:08:41.73\00:08:44.63 at its deepest and richest blessed. 00:08:44.66\00:08:46.87 And if you're person of no faith 00:08:46.90\00:08:49.30 understand how you got there at the deepest and richest best. 00:08:49.33\00:08:52.66 So it includes all faiths and none. 00:08:52.69\00:08:56.27 And then know enough about your neighbor 00:08:56.30\00:08:58.08 in order to show at respect 00:08:58.11\00:08:59.40 and I know that's a big bite of the apple 00:08:59.43\00:09:02.34 but if we could find a way 00:09:02.37\00:09:03.77 to take that big bite of the apple 00:09:03.80\00:09:05.67 we would eliminate sectarian strife in the world. 00:09:05.70\00:09:07.86 Think about it. 00:09:07.89\00:09:08.95 We would eliminate sectarian strife 00:09:08.98\00:09:10.96 there will be no more religious wars. 00:09:10.99\00:09:12.78 We would have respect for one another. 00:09:12.81\00:09:14.34 We don't cross over the differences, 00:09:14.37\00:09:16.59 we don't compromise who we are, 00:09:16.62\00:09:18.41 we don't put ourselves on any slippery slope. 00:09:18.44\00:09:20.97 All we do is understand why we believe what we believe. 00:09:21.00\00:09:23.89 It sounds captivating when you say that 00:09:23.92\00:09:25.49 and of course as well as an optimist you're realists 00:09:25.52\00:09:28.04 I don't think we going likely to eliminate sectarian war 00:09:28.07\00:09:30.99 but it would be a wonderful goal to work toward wouldn't it, 00:09:31.02\00:09:34.26 we need to. Oh, yeah. 00:09:34.29\00:09:35.74 Because reverse is a sectarian abyss. 00:09:35.77\00:09:38.27 Its Armageddon, isn't it. 00:09:38.30\00:09:40.57 It's not literally biblically then figuratively true. 00:09:40.60\00:09:43.28 But you sound a little bit like to person who says the poor 00:09:43.31\00:09:46.51 we have with us always. 00:09:46.54\00:09:47.57 It's a biblical admonition. No, it's not an admonition. 00:09:47.60\00:09:50.57 We can't be status quo. 00:09:50.60\00:09:52.67 It may be in point of realism 00:09:52.70\00:09:54.51 but that doesn't take the burden off our behaviors to change. 00:09:54.54\00:09:57.48 So that's wonderful that after this experience 00:09:57.51\00:10:00.14 dealing with many issues many countries 00:10:00.17\00:10:02.99 you're really got this, this biblical optimism. 00:10:03.02\00:10:06.57 When we talk about religious conflict 00:10:06.60\00:10:08.27 and the need for religious liberty. 00:10:08.30\00:10:10.94 Yes we did not have the biblical optimism, 00:10:10.97\00:10:13.84 if I did not have biblical optimism, 00:10:13.87\00:10:16.56 you know, I would be the world's worst pessimist. 00:10:16.59\00:10:19.87 But there is something tangible that gives my hope credibility. 00:10:19.90\00:10:24.95 Hope is the expectation that tomorrows reality 00:10:24.98\00:10:27.08 is gonna be better 00:10:27.11\00:10:28.78 but its important to have something tangible 00:10:28.81\00:10:30.68 in the present that points towards that expectation 00:10:30.71\00:10:34.42 that the resurrection does that familiar. Absolutely. 00:10:34.45\00:10:36.97 And working in religious liberty it may not be better 00:10:37.00\00:10:39.96 left to its own devices but the opposition 00:10:39.99\00:10:43.23 and others even some of our viewers 00:10:43.26\00:10:46.07 they have the ability to be part of a grand swirl 00:10:46.10\00:10:49.40 to turn back this intolerance 00:10:49.43\00:10:51.84 and this lack of religious liberty in practice around. 00:10:51.87\00:10:54.45 Understand your own faith at its deepest and richest best. 00:10:54.48\00:10:59.01 And so, so just in a capsule 00:10:59.04\00:11:02.16 what could you say about your time as 00:11:02.19\00:11:05.41 ambassador-at-large for religious liberty. 00:11:05.44\00:11:07.46 What was the key to, in your mind carrying that through? 00:11:07.49\00:11:11.38 What did you need to keep in mind? 00:11:11.41\00:11:14.68 I think what you always have to keep in mind 00:11:14.71\00:11:16.33 what you always have to see is the face of the person 00:11:16.36\00:11:19.40 who is to use the metaphor of Good Samaritan. 00:11:19.43\00:11:23.24 A person who is lying on the side of the road beaten 00:11:23.27\00:11:25.96 and bruised that has to be your motivation, 00:11:25.99\00:11:28.43 that has to be why you do what you do. 00:11:28.46\00:11:30.49 Why I did what I did. 00:11:30.52\00:11:34.89 In presenting religious liberty is always a tension 00:11:34.92\00:11:38.99 between the different goals we are trying to communicate. 00:11:39.02\00:11:42.38 You know, when I look at the life of Jesus 00:11:42.41\00:11:44.89 I can see that it's easy to focus 00:11:44.92\00:11:46.70 on the woe on the Scribes and the Pharisees 00:11:46.73\00:11:49.98 and perhaps just as easy to forget that Jesus 00:11:50.01\00:11:53.69 when He spoke to the women taken in sin 00:11:53.72\00:11:55.55 He said "neither do I condemn thee 00:11:55.58\00:11:57.41 go and sin no more." 00:11:57.44\00:11:59.64 When we talk about religious liberty 00:11:59.67\00:12:01.98 we should be airing on the side of compassion and consideration. 00:12:02.01\00:12:07.72 Obviously, some of this field 00:12:07.75\00:12:09.56 that we have more truth than others 00:12:09.59\00:12:11.46 that's inherent in any belief system 00:12:11.49\00:12:13.63 as well as human nature. 00:12:13.66\00:12:15.31 But we need to understand 00:12:15.34\00:12:16.73 no matter where we are talking about 00:12:16.76\00:12:18.25 whether we are traveling in the Far East 00:12:18.28\00:12:20.70 or the South East Asia or the United States 00:12:20.73\00:12:24.01 but we need to represent 00:12:24.04\00:12:26.31 true values of understanding a freedom, 00:12:26.34\00:12:30.24 a spiritual self determination 00:12:30.27\00:12:33.01 and borrowing from the Bible 00:12:33.04\00:12:36.66 as it says "against such there is no law. 00:12:36.69\00:12:40.56 There must be a higher law 00:12:40.59\00:12:42.65 that guides that principles of religious freedom." 00:12:42.68\00:12:45.88 The law of liberty is purported I believe. 00:12:45.91\00:12:51.10 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:51.13\00:12:54.34
