Welcome back to Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.31\00:00:08.10 Before the break with guest Melissa Reid, 00:00:08.13\00:00:10.61 we were bouncing around on the topic of persecution 00:00:10.64\00:00:14.77 but particularly two cases that have come 00:00:14.80\00:00:17.60 that have come to the Adventist churches attention, 00:00:17.63\00:00:19.54 one in Pakistan and one in Togo of Seventh-day Adventist 00:00:19.57\00:00:23.89 that have been imprisoned and suffering for their faith 00:00:23.92\00:00:26.93 although the dynamic in each case is different. 00:00:26.96\00:00:29.24 One charged of blasphemy on a telephone call, Mr. Sajjad. 00:00:29.27\00:00:33.81 Now the second one, do you want to introduce? 00:00:33.84\00:00:36.22 The case that's been on the board for a couple of years now. 00:00:36.25\00:00:38.49 Yeah, unfortunately I think we've just celebrated 00:00:38.52\00:00:41.44 a two year anniversary for a pastor 00:00:41.47\00:00:44.19 who's actually originally from Cape Verde came to Togo 00:00:44.22\00:00:48.41 which is a Western African nation 00:00:48.55\00:00:51.26 and was serving there and has been imprisoned 00:00:51.29\00:00:55.32 or was accused but has not been convicted, is that correct? 00:00:55.35\00:01:00.04 There hasn't even been-- Either there's not been trial. 00:01:00.07\00:01:02.75 He's been charged in the sense he was arrested 00:01:02.78\00:01:04.85 but no formal charges-- 00:01:04.88\00:01:05.92 No formal charges. No trial. 00:01:05.95\00:01:07.51 And yet he has now celebrated two years in-- 00:01:07.54\00:01:09.78 or not celebrated, passed two years in prison 00:01:09.81\00:01:14.18 for blood trafficking charge. 00:01:14.21\00:01:17.25 Again, as we mentioned in the first story, 00:01:17.28\00:01:20.55 the witnesses now recanted, 00:01:20.58\00:01:22.27 is that correct or he's proven unreliable. 00:01:22.30\00:01:25.57 Proven unreliable. Yes. 00:01:25.60\00:01:26.95 Well, you know for our viewers, it mean-- 00:01:26.98\00:01:29.88 I'd mention this on another program 00:01:29.91\00:01:31.62 I think about six months ago. 00:01:31.65\00:01:33.55 It's worth repeating but it's bizarre 00:01:33.58\00:01:35.47 but it's an illustration of often how persecution comes. 00:01:35.50\00:01:39.40 Not very often except in a full phase program 00:01:39.43\00:01:42.87 against the group you'll find someone put in jail say, 00:01:42.90\00:01:46.60 because they are an Adventist, 00:01:46.63\00:01:47.67 because they are catholic or whatever. 00:01:47.70\00:01:49.82 It's usually a subtle thing that 00:01:49.85\00:01:51.09 because they are that there's deep prejudice 00:01:51.12\00:01:53.78 an intention to trap them up 00:01:53.81\00:01:56.27 or to frame then, if you would. 00:01:56.30\00:01:57.76 Yes. Yes. 00:01:57.79\00:01:58.82 And so Pastor Montero, as you said a native of Cape Verde, 00:01:58.85\00:02:02.69 a little group of violence, 400 miles of the coast of Togo. 00:02:02.72\00:02:07.76 And Togo itself is not very big, 00:02:07.79\00:02:09.03 just a little sliver of a country below Ghana, 00:02:09.06\00:02:11.31 six million people. 00:02:11.34\00:02:13.56 And so this-- essentially this missionary church leader, 00:02:13.59\00:02:17.40 Pastor Montero serving as a Sabbath school director, 00:02:17.43\00:02:21.40 in other words the internal responsibility, 00:02:21.43\00:02:23.50 not even an outward looking position 00:02:23.53\00:02:25.54 but on one occasion this gentleman came 00:02:25.57\00:02:27.90 and asks some advice of church leaders 00:02:27.93\00:02:30.49 and among others he spoke to Montero, 00:02:30.52\00:02:32.58 that's the only contact it had to this man. 00:02:32.61\00:02:35.51 Then a few weeks later something 00:02:35.54\00:02:37.07 that I discovered fairly common in that area, 00:02:37.10\00:02:40.02 there was some murders and the charge was made that-- 00:02:40.05\00:02:43.38 not that murders were common but the nature of the murder 00:02:43.41\00:02:46.91 that young woman had been killed 00:02:46.94\00:02:48.53 and their blood drained for animistic sacrifices. 00:02:48.56\00:02:52.21 That is typical of that area of course. 00:02:52.24\00:02:54.76 And nine women, allude seems unclear 00:02:54.79\00:02:57.47 whether the bodies were ever discovered. 00:02:57.50\00:02:58.97 So it might just been a broad brush charge 00:02:59.00\00:03:02.02 but nine women were killed, blood taken, 00:03:02.05\00:03:05.19 this man that had come to the church just revise, 00:03:05.22\00:03:07.79 was arrested quickly as none criminal, 00:03:07.82\00:03:09.80 confessed quickly and then he said, 00:03:09.83\00:03:11.90 Pastor Montero was the ring leader. 00:03:11.93\00:03:15.09 Well, it's just logical, 00:03:15.12\00:03:16.15 they had the most cleansing connection, 00:03:16.18\00:03:18.59 not to mention such a thing as true Christians 00:03:18.62\00:03:22.75 and people of other faiths have done bizarre things 00:03:22.78\00:03:25.22 but there's not logic 00:03:25.25\00:03:26.32 or almost opportunity for him to do something like this. 00:03:26.35\00:03:29.78 Right. Right. 00:03:29.81\00:03:30.84 And so he was arrested quickly and two other church members 00:03:30.87\00:03:34.57 but its interesting that the charge 00:03:34.60\00:03:36.38 was never really repeated. 00:03:36.41\00:03:37.53 No evidence were call in. 00:03:37.56\00:03:38.59 And that's the thing, that's the frustrating thing 00:03:38.62\00:03:40.44 because I am sure the pastor and his family 00:03:40.47\00:03:42.90 and are very anxious for either a charge or-- 00:03:42.93\00:03:48.44 and then a subsequent trials so he can prove his innocence 00:03:48.47\00:03:52.52 or you know, obviously the case being dismiss 00:03:52.55\00:03:54.67 and so there's no evidence towards the charge-- 00:03:54.70\00:03:57.72 And you think by now, 00:03:57.75\00:03:58.78 after two years if there was some hard evidence 00:03:58.81\00:04:00.55 that would at least be floating around 00:04:00.58\00:04:01.90 but nothing but for of. 00:04:01.93\00:04:04.70 It appears to a number of us 00:04:04.73\00:04:06.29 that there's a bigger political issue applied 00:04:06.32\00:04:10.20 we don't quite know what's going on. 00:04:10.23\00:04:11.74 But there's some higher calculation 00:04:11.77\00:04:15.97 but we don't know why they don't deal with him 00:04:16.00\00:04:18.12 at least just even the sort of put it under the rug 00:04:18.15\00:04:20.68 and quietly let him out of the jail. 00:04:20.71\00:04:22.17 So he and the other stay in jail, 00:04:22.20\00:04:24.83 rotting quite literally, a jail 00:04:24.86\00:04:27.09 where there's no internal services 00:04:27.12\00:04:28.62 just a door or guards outside 00:04:28.65\00:04:30.55 and they throw the prisoners in 00:04:30.58\00:04:31.72 and the food is passed in by family members every few days. 00:04:31.75\00:04:34.81 Right. 00:04:34.84\00:04:35.88 And the prisoners pass out the dead 00:04:35.91\00:04:38.25 and a couple of hundred people have died 00:04:38.28\00:04:39.75 since he's been there. 00:04:39.78\00:04:40.91 So it's not a good situation. 00:04:40.94\00:04:42.75 Now I hear, I imagining myself in that kind of situation, 00:04:42.78\00:04:46.46 it's difficult to but I imagine 00:04:46.49\00:04:48.50 that I, you know, where it would a lot of times 00:04:48.53\00:04:50.42 of discouragement especially 00:04:50.45\00:04:53.04 when you don't have any sort of, you know, 00:04:53.07\00:04:55.77 end inside or hope inside as far as not even a trial or anything. 00:04:55.80\00:04:58.89 But from what I understand Pastor Montero 00:04:58.92\00:05:01.73 is in there leading Bible studies, encouraging other 00:05:01.76\00:05:06.14 prisoners. He certainly doesn't want to get out unless he's 00:05:06.17\00:05:08.87 vindicated. Yes. 00:05:08.90\00:05:09.93 Which I hope for his sake that happens. 00:05:09.96\00:05:13.51 I mean, I don't think its Christians 00:05:13.54\00:05:16.16 or any one of faith to call upon 00:05:16.19\00:05:17.91 to suffer unnecessarily for their faith. 00:05:17.94\00:05:20.88 So if there's a release available 00:05:20.91\00:05:24.44 I think we should take advantage of it. 00:05:24.47\00:05:26.42 Although it's interesting and Paul talking 00:05:26.45\00:05:29.25 about the persecuted through the ages, 00:05:29.28\00:05:32.14 I often preach on these things, he names them all 00:05:32.17\00:05:34.75 and the ones that were showed him to 00:05:34.78\00:05:35.95 and then he says not accepting release. 00:05:35.98\00:05:40.07 But I know what Paul was meaning. 00:05:40.10\00:05:42.12 If to get release you have to compromise your faith, you know. 00:05:42.15\00:05:46.41 Absolutely. 00:05:46.44\00:05:48.13 That used to be the thing in the middle ages, 00:05:48.16\00:05:49.69 you know, we can't, you are out. 00:05:49.72\00:05:51.26 Yes. 00:05:51.29\00:05:52.80 But in this case it's not really that narrowly speaking 00:05:52.83\00:05:55.28 because of his faith but because he is a Christian in a country 00:05:55.31\00:05:58.55 with only 25% Christians, 25% Muslims, 00:05:58.58\00:06:02.54 a very unstable dysfunctional political system, 00:06:02.57\00:06:07.02 lot of prejudice floating around, 00:06:07.05\00:06:08.38 there's animistic practice of blood sacrifices. 00:06:08.41\00:06:12.64 It's easy for him and his religion to be mischaracterized. 00:06:12.67\00:06:15.60 Sure. Absolutely. 00:06:15.63\00:06:17.05 And it's just the irony of the fact 00:06:17.08\00:06:19.51 that he was actually having to help this-- 00:06:19.54\00:06:22.07 wanting to assist this gentleman 00:06:22.10\00:06:23.53 or help this gentleman who he met one time before 00:06:23.56\00:06:26.72 and now has turned 00:06:26.75\00:06:28.21 and you know, is the accuser, it's just-- 00:06:28.24\00:06:30.65 Well, but still-- the Christian needs to help. 00:06:30.68\00:06:34.10 And US, you know, always trying to draw the connection. 00:06:34.13\00:06:37.60 It's not seen as religious liberty problem 00:06:37.63\00:06:42.18 but you know, good Samaritan laws in the US are fine 00:06:42.21\00:06:47.07 but many, many times in the US people 00:06:47.10\00:06:50.35 find themselves under legal challenge 00:06:50.38\00:06:51.78 because they tried to do a good deed. 00:06:51.81\00:06:54.36 And you know, doctors are complaining 00:06:54.39\00:06:56.44 about that all the time with the malpractice 00:06:56.47\00:07:00.33 and so on that, you know, doing good 00:07:00.36\00:07:02.86 they may inadvertently destroy their career. 00:07:02.89\00:07:05.85 It's interesting, I just read an article the other day 00:07:05.88\00:07:08.92 about how we celebrate individuals 00:07:08.95\00:07:12.00 for doing what they should do. 00:07:12.03\00:07:15.50 Get a couple of instances of someone finding money 00:07:15.53\00:07:18.46 and returning it to the individual 00:07:18.49\00:07:20.58 or somebody seeing, you know, 00:07:20.61\00:07:23.49 one person being taken advantage of the other person 00:07:23.52\00:07:26.06 and it was interesting the author of the article 00:07:26.09\00:07:27.73 was saying, are we now at a point in society 00:07:27.76\00:07:30.13 where we celebrate-- 00:07:30.16\00:07:31.96 we're so depraved that we celebrate 00:07:31.99\00:07:34.53 when someone actually just behaves in the way 00:07:34.56\00:07:36.40 they are suppose to, you know, it's interesting. 00:07:36.43\00:07:39.83 And the answer is probably yes, we are. 00:07:39.86\00:07:43.08 And same with whistleblowers. Yeah. 00:07:43.11\00:07:45.11 There is a whistleblowers law 00:07:45.14\00:07:46.21 but practically every time especially in the government 00:07:46.24\00:07:48.64 someone blows the whistle, their career is finish. 00:07:48.67\00:07:51.24 Absolutely. 00:07:51.27\00:07:52.30 So there's really not a protection 00:07:52.33\00:07:53.48 but what is it, integrity isn't something like 00:07:53.51\00:07:56.74 integrity is the best reward. 00:07:56.77\00:07:58.41 Sure. And certainly-- 00:07:58.44\00:07:59.47 Virtually, it's its own reward. 00:07:59.50\00:08:00.53 Yes, and certainly it's our eternal reward 00:08:00.56\00:08:02.97 but that also brings me back to Mr. Masih 00:08:03.00\00:08:06.93 and back in Pakistan and I think about knowing 00:08:06.96\00:08:10.88 that he is a member of this faith group 00:08:10.91\00:08:13.42 and knowing the consequences 00:08:13.45\00:08:14.89 that could happen to him being-- 00:08:14.92\00:08:16.59 publicly being a Christian, I just-- 00:08:16.62\00:08:20.23 I really want to affirm him and his family and just-- 00:08:20.26\00:08:23.64 I mean, it's incredible to know, you know, 00:08:23.67\00:08:25.44 standing up for Jesus in the consequences. 00:08:25.47\00:08:28.15 I mean, he of course did not that his romantic rival 00:08:28.18\00:08:31.76 was going to, you know, 00:08:31.79\00:08:33.47 but he knew that by being as Christian in that environment-- 00:08:33.50\00:08:35.24 Absolutely, it was filled with praline 00:08:35.27\00:08:37.80 and in spite of that he decided to maintain 00:08:37.83\00:08:40.60 his Seventh-day Adventist Christian faith. 00:08:40.63\00:08:42.16 Yeah, absolutely. And that is important. 00:08:42.19\00:08:44.16 One thing that it's worth mentioning 00:08:44.19\00:08:46.15 with Pastor Montero, yes, he wasn't in there 00:08:46.18\00:08:49.59 narrowly speaking because of something 00:08:49.62\00:08:51.82 he had done or not done as an Adventist 00:08:51.85\00:08:53.95 but once he was brought in the media had a field day 00:08:53.98\00:08:58.97 vilifying him from religious perspective 00:08:59.00\00:09:00.90 and mischaracterizing Adventist as people 00:09:00.93\00:09:04.02 with strange practices including some blood rituals. 00:09:04.05\00:09:08.13 So religious prejudice kicked in big 00:09:08.16\00:09:10.40 so I don't think that's even slightly off the limit 00:09:10.43\00:09:13.18 to characterizing this as religious prejudice/persecution. 00:09:13.21\00:09:17.84 Yeah. Well, it's-- 00:09:17.87\00:09:20.76 defiantly both of these families, 00:09:20.79\00:09:22.35 I really have been impressed, 00:09:22.38\00:09:24.20 I haven't-- I am not as familiar, 00:09:24.23\00:09:26.25 it's a newer story that the family in Pakistan, 00:09:26.28\00:09:30.07 the young man in Pakistan but I-- 00:09:30.10\00:09:31.59 in the anecdotes that I've heard about Mrs. Montero 00:09:31.62\00:09:36.09 and her friend bringing food to the prison 00:09:36.12\00:09:40.54 and all those sort of situation really suffering 00:09:40.57\00:09:43.38 but also they seem like they are holding up this great attitude. 00:09:43.41\00:09:46.50 It's impressive, it's certainly is a testimony to their 00:09:46.53\00:09:50.94 relationship with Christ being able 00:09:50.97\00:09:52.72 to see the positive in situations 00:09:52.75\00:09:55.44 and ministering to the needs of those 00:09:55.47\00:09:58.99 in the prison as well that's with them. 00:09:59.02\00:10:01.24 We certainly want to commend them and hold them up in prayer. 00:10:01.27\00:10:08.24 A few years ago I head a rather humorous 00:10:08.27\00:10:10.24 regarding world population levels. 00:10:10.27\00:10:13.48 there's way too many people are being born, 00:10:13.51\00:10:17.37 the world is over crowded and he says, 00:10:17.40\00:10:19.17 somewhere in the world every 3 minutes 00:10:19.20\00:10:21.87 a woman is giving birth. 00:10:21.90\00:10:24.19 And in the audience someone yelled out, 00:10:24.22\00:10:25.72 I say we find that woman and stop her. 00:10:25.75\00:10:28.69 When you are talking about persecution 00:10:28.72\00:10:31.60 we need to realize there are hundreds of thousands 00:10:31.63\00:10:34.22 perhaps millions of people are suffering for their faith. 00:10:34.25\00:10:37.62 Many thousands presently are dying. 00:10:37.65\00:10:40.91 But perhaps it's not all that bad 00:10:40.94\00:10:42.75 as we have in this program with Pastor Montero 00:10:42.78\00:10:46.34 and our brother in Pakistan focus on a particular case 00:10:46.37\00:10:50.54 because in the particular we can see the general. 00:10:50.57\00:10:54.20 We know that Seventh-day Adventist 00:10:54.23\00:10:56.80 as many other Christians and people of other faiths 00:10:56.83\00:10:59.26 are suffering for their faith. 00:10:59.29\00:11:01.47 And when we have a face to that reality 00:11:01.50\00:11:04.59 it will perhaps give us a greater impetus 00:11:04.62\00:11:08.31 to be concern for those unnamed faceless 00:11:08.34\00:11:12.69 but real thousands, millions around the world 00:11:12.72\00:11:16.83 who need relief from the suffering 00:11:16.86\00:11:18.93 that they are facing for their faith. 00:11:18.96\00:11:22.39 From Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:22.42\00:11:25.97
