Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:22.97\00:00:24.63 This is a program bringing you discussion, 00:00:24.66\00:00:26.87 news, views, information up-to-date 00:00:26.90\00:00:30.41 and relevant analysis on religious liberty events 00:00:30.44\00:00:33.97 in the United States and around the world. 00:00:34.00\00:00:36.18 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine. 00:00:36.21\00:00:39.61 And my guest on this program is Miss Melissa Reid, 00:00:39.64\00:00:45.56 associate editor of Liberty. 00:00:45.59\00:00:46.82 So is a certain correspondence here. Yes. 00:00:46.85\00:00:49.09 We have a common interest in Liberty 00:00:49.12\00:00:51.75 and perhaps that's why we should talk 00:00:51.78\00:00:53.64 about the Liberty Campaign for one of the better term. 00:00:53.67\00:00:57.07 Right. 00:00:57.10\00:00:58.41 We do this every year and what are we doing this year? 00:00:58.44\00:01:01.04 Well, so for those that aren't familiar 00:01:01.07\00:01:03.04 the religious liberty campaign as an annual offering 00:01:03.07\00:01:07.07 with the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America. 00:01:07.10\00:01:09.70 And it is the really the soul funding 00:01:09.73\00:01:13.17 for Liberty Magazine subscriptions 00:01:13.20\00:01:15.67 to both sponsor subscriptions 00:01:15.70\00:01:18.59 and those that are paid 00:01:18.62\00:01:20.00 for by the individual church member. 00:01:20.03\00:01:22.44 And so it's our one opportunity 00:01:22.47\00:01:24.16 a year to come before each local church. 00:01:24.19\00:01:28.88 We certainly help that each local church takes part 00:01:28.91\00:01:31.44 in the campaign and we do everything 00:01:31.47\00:01:34.01 we can to make it easy for them to be involved 00:01:34.04\00:01:36.46 and to promote religious freedom. 00:01:36.49\00:01:38.50 But like I said it's one opportunity a year 00:01:38.53\00:01:40.74 and so it's really important to us. 00:01:40.77\00:01:43.04 So part of my job responsibility 00:01:43.07\00:01:45.82 is putting together promotional material for that campaign. 00:01:45.85\00:01:49.65 We've just finished putting that together at the press right now. 00:01:49.68\00:01:53.94 And it's really exciting story we try to highlight a story. 00:01:53.97\00:01:56.88 Well, the story is the central part 00:01:56.91\00:01:58.52 but we're sending at whole packet of materials 00:01:58.55\00:02:01.39 and we've try to consolidate it into a single package 00:02:01.42\00:02:06.77 that looks like a Liberty Magazine 00:02:06.80\00:02:09.16 But it has in it order forms, it had sermon, posters. 00:02:09.19\00:02:12.95 Yes. Oh, the sermon this year is fantastic. 00:02:12.98\00:02:16.20 I'm gonna talk about that, just briefly 00:02:16.23\00:02:17.40 before we go on to the feature story 00:02:17.43\00:02:19.73 that we're highlighting. 00:02:19.76\00:02:21.65 So, the ministerial director for the North American Division, 00:02:21.68\00:02:25.58 Pastor Ivan Williams wrote, 00:02:25.61\00:02:27.52 composed our sermon for us this year. 00:02:27.55\00:02:29.02 It's very well done. 00:02:29.05\00:02:30.55 Not only we had the written version 00:02:30.58\00:02:32.01 what we make available to individuals these are mailed 00:02:32.04\00:02:35.02 to the religious liberty director at the local church. 00:02:35.05\00:02:37.74 They're also available on our website 00:02:37.77\00:02:39.40 which is libertymagazine.org. 00:02:39.43\00:02:42.34 Also we have the written version of the sermon 00:02:42.37\00:02:45.33 but we also have a video version available. 00:02:45.36\00:02:48.75 So if perhaps your church is one of three churches 00:02:48.78\00:02:53.39 in pastor's district and its religious liberty Sabbath 00:02:53.42\00:02:57.12 and the pastor not there 00:02:57.15\00:02:58.18 to preach the religious liberty sermon 00:02:58.21\00:02:59.90 you can show the video of Pastor Williams 00:02:59.93\00:03:02.34 preaching his religious liberty message. 00:03:02.37\00:03:03.83 Now you're mentioning going to all the churches 00:03:03.86\00:03:05.28 it's might be good opportunity to tell people. 00:03:05.31\00:03:07.95 There is a lot of those churches about 5,000 churches 00:03:07.98\00:03:11.37 that are getting this material. 00:03:11.40\00:03:12.45 Fantastic. 00:03:12.48\00:03:13.71 And we target the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:03:13.74\00:03:16.85 but please viewers if you are of some other denomination 00:03:16.88\00:03:20.61 and you think your church would like to pick up this challenge 00:03:20.64\00:03:23.96 we would be happy to send the material, would we. 00:03:23.99\00:03:25.86 Absolutely yes, contact us. 00:03:25.89\00:03:26.92 So and they certainly 00:03:26.95\00:03:28.08 can contact us at libertymagazine.org. 00:03:28.11\00:03:30.40 Yes. 00:03:30.43\00:03:32.31 So yeah, it's a fun part of my job 00:03:32.34\00:03:34.35 is coming putting together this material. 00:03:34.38\00:03:37.61 I think both you and I enjoy our jobs quite a bit 00:03:37.64\00:03:39.87 we're certainly you know Religious Liberty advocates 00:03:39.90\00:03:43.49 it's not just a paycheck for us 00:03:43.52\00:03:47.32 it's certainly not even near the top of the reasons. 00:03:47.35\00:03:49.20 Not the paychecks, what it should be? 00:03:49.23\00:03:52.92 What certainly not the top of the reasons 00:03:52.95\00:03:54.03 why we do the work we do-- 00:03:54.06\00:03:55.09 I think anybody that considered 00:03:55.12\00:03:57.12 for the financial award would be looking elsewhere. 00:03:57.15\00:04:00.71 Right, so its. 00:04:00.74\00:04:01.77 And its worth remembering Liberty Magazine 00:04:01.80\00:04:04.78 is essentially funded by this money we raise. 00:04:04.81\00:04:08.34 Right. But our salaries don't come out of that. 00:04:08.37\00:04:10.77 Correct, exactly. There from a different pool. 00:04:10.80\00:04:12.31 So all the funds raised will go 00:04:12.34\00:04:15.63 to Liberty Magazine subscriptions. 00:04:15.66\00:04:18.18 I love that aspect of it and it makes it so important. 00:04:18.21\00:04:21.53 And again I mentioned 00:04:21.56\00:04:23.23 I think we've mentioned several times 00:04:23.26\00:04:24.40 on the show one of the things 00:04:24.43\00:04:25.91 that I love about our magazine is our longevity. 00:04:25.94\00:04:28.77 And it's the longevity exists 00:04:28.80\00:04:31.59 because of the other faithful donations 00:04:31.62\00:04:33.23 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church members, 00:04:33.26\00:04:35.21 1906 is when we first republished. 00:04:35.24\00:04:37.71 So we're over a hundred years old 00:04:37.74\00:04:40.73 and yet and is because of the faithful 00:04:40.76\00:04:44.68 giving of the Seventh-day Adventist Church member so-- 00:04:44.71\00:04:45.82 I don't think there is another religious liberty general 00:04:45.85\00:04:48.33 that's got that pedigree both on age, 00:04:48.36\00:04:52.88 longevities as you've pointed out or distribution. 00:04:52.91\00:04:55.61 Absolutely. 00:04:55.64\00:04:56.67 We're sending out it varies a little bit 00:04:56.70\00:04:58.59 but the last several years 00:04:58.62\00:05:01.18 it's been very close to about a 182,000 every issue. 00:05:01.21\00:05:04.30 Oh, praise the Lord. 00:05:04.33\00:05:05.36 And I was surprised I was reading 00:05:05.39\00:05:07.61 I won't say that which magazine 00:05:07.64\00:05:08.81 one of the Newsstand Magazines and I read there. 00:05:08.84\00:05:11.81 Well, I can tell you what it was, it was hoppers 00:05:11.84\00:05:14.80 and they paid subscriptions where in the tens of thousands. 00:05:14.83\00:05:17.96 Oh, wow. 00:05:17.99\00:05:19.02 Now they distribute, you know, 00:05:19.05\00:05:21.31 little bit differently that stood. 00:05:21.34\00:05:23.17 But I do know that they are many, 00:05:23.20\00:05:24.90 many major publications secular ones 00:05:24.93\00:05:28.72 that people see on the Newsstand 00:05:28.75\00:05:30.01 that are less than a hundred thousand. 00:05:30.04\00:05:33.25 Yeah, isn't that interesting? 00:05:33.28\00:05:34.34 And two, three hundred thousand is quite exceptional. 00:05:34.37\00:05:37.78 Yeah, absolutely. 00:05:37.81\00:05:39.05 And the thing is we're only limited 00:05:39.08\00:05:41.38 by the funds that come in, that so you know. 00:05:41.41\00:05:43.29 Sure you know plenty of names. 00:05:43.32\00:05:44.63 There is a plenty of names and explanation of that, 00:05:44.66\00:05:48.31 so our office, our editorial office is put together 00:05:48.34\00:05:51.87 what we call our national priority list. 00:05:51.90\00:05:54.47 Those are names that, you know, sometimes people will sponsor 00:05:54.50\00:05:57.93 subscriptions to specific individuals. 00:05:57.96\00:06:00.46 Like if I am on the city council or identify individuals, 00:06:00.49\00:06:04.19 you know, I want to make sure the John Smith 00:06:04.22\00:06:06.29 and Jane Doe both get magazine subscriptions. 00:06:06.32\00:06:08.99 But sometimes we get money 00:06:09.02\00:06:11.69 and I think it's probably even more frequently money 00:06:11.72\00:06:14.35 that is not for a specific subscription 00:06:14.38\00:06:16.33 is just general donation to the magazine. 00:06:16.36\00:06:18.86 And so that's when we can fund subscriptions 00:06:18.89\00:06:21.63 of this national priority list. 00:06:21.66\00:06:24.24 And our office is dedicated 00:06:24.27\00:06:25.93 to maintaining that list whenever there is 00:06:25.96\00:06:28.11 you know these are politicians, 00:06:28.14\00:06:29.62 federal government employees, federal judges. 00:06:29.65\00:06:31.46 Well, the administrative system is as we speak. 00:06:31.49\00:06:34.51 Yes. Working diligently on that. 00:06:34.54\00:06:36.82 Absolutely, I mean, you know, there is-- 00:06:36.85\00:06:37.88 It's an important list. 00:06:37.91\00:06:39.37 Yeah, it's an important list 00:06:39.40\00:06:40.56 and it's important to keep it accurate in current 00:06:40.59\00:06:43.10 and it can continue to grow or you know 00:06:43.13\00:06:47.95 there're so many individuals that make decisions 00:06:47.98\00:06:50.70 that can affect our religious freedom. 00:06:50.73\00:06:52.26 And so in that way should we be receiving Liberty Magazine. 00:06:52.29\00:06:57.65 So again, you know, we're incredibly 00:06:57.68\00:06:59.57 grateful for longevity of the magazine 00:06:59.60\00:07:02.80 and we hope for, you know, 00:07:02.83\00:07:04.64 that it will really continue as long as it continues 00:07:04.67\00:07:07.55 to service purpose meaning until Christ comes. 00:07:07.58\00:07:10.87 By definition that's we could also say 00:07:10.90\00:07:13.32 until there are no religious liberty issues 00:07:13.35\00:07:15.77 to negative issues to counteract 00:07:15.80\00:07:18.48 but we know that will never be until Christ come. 00:07:18.51\00:07:20.50 It will never be, right. 00:07:20.53\00:07:22.03 It's always been something that has we thoughtful. Yes. 00:07:22.06\00:07:24.95 You know, exhibit day the reformation 00:07:24.98\00:07:30.75 the western world not just the Islamic world 00:07:30.78\00:07:32.82 that we now see stirred with, you know bad, tendencies 00:07:32.85\00:07:37.09 but the western world went through 00:07:37.12\00:07:38.79 a difficult period of 100s of years 00:07:38.82\00:07:41.12 where religious freedom was essentially unknown. 00:07:41.15\00:07:43.37 Right. 00:07:43.40\00:07:44.43 And so we're defending something 00:07:44.46\00:07:45.80 that was hard one and even in our modern era 00:07:45.83\00:07:49.13 it could drift away if we're not careful. 00:07:49.16\00:07:50.98 And don't you feel like and this is one thing 00:07:51.01\00:07:53.30 I love about the magazine is that we typically will do 00:07:53.33\00:07:57.81 or feature articles or series of articles 00:07:57.84\00:08:00.63 on the history of religious freedom 00:08:00.66\00:08:02.04 and how it was well fought and won. 00:08:02.07\00:08:04.26 Because I think a lot of times just like 00:08:04.29\00:08:07.06 we aren't students of the Bible in the way 00:08:07.09\00:08:09.27 that we should be we're not students 00:08:09.30\00:08:10.46 of history in the way that we should be. 00:08:10.49\00:08:11.52 Its right people have forgotten the lot of history. 00:08:11.55\00:08:12.97 Right and so it doesn't have that impact, 00:08:13.00\00:08:15.44 you know, to say that I am protestant 00:08:15.47\00:08:17.33 or that, you know or to talk 00:08:17.36\00:08:18.66 about the reaffirmation unless you, 00:08:18.69\00:08:21.45 you know have really studied and understood 00:08:21.48\00:08:24.14 you know what these individuals 00:08:24.17\00:08:25.32 fought for and sometimes died for. 00:08:25.35\00:08:27.25 You don't really understand 00:08:27.28\00:08:29.02 why it's so important to hold on to that identity now. 00:08:29.05\00:08:32.20 Well, it's always dangerous to write something 00:08:32.23\00:08:34.64 large on the comment of one individual 00:08:34.67\00:08:36.30 but that said Senator Santorum's 00:08:36.33\00:08:39.46 heartfelt comment during the primaries 00:08:39.49\00:08:44.52 in the last presidential election were shocking to me. 00:08:44.55\00:08:46.47 Yes. 00:08:46.50\00:08:47.53 Where he is a dedicated Roman Catholic working 00:08:47.56\00:08:49.81 I'm sure very closely as you can you would expect 00:08:49.84\00:08:52.54 with the Roman Catholic hierarchy. 00:08:52.57\00:08:54.95 He said that in America Protestantism is absent. 00:08:54.98\00:08:58.88 I mean, that's just amazing. 00:08:58.91\00:09:00.20 The Protestantism is not affiliation. Yes. 00:09:00.23\00:09:03.33 Its ongoing description of people 00:09:03.36\00:09:05.90 of valued religious liberty, valued religious purity, 00:09:05.93\00:09:08.97 doctrinal correctness some other. 00:09:09.00\00:09:10.57 Right. Many of them were burned at the stake. 00:09:10.60\00:09:14.04 You know, whole countries were convulsed 00:09:14.07\00:09:15.80 by intolerance as they struggle to-- 00:09:15.83\00:09:20.77 in some cases to fight for their religious liberty. 00:09:20.80\00:09:22.75 And so it just for the someone representing 00:09:22.78\00:09:25.72 the very entity change as it may be. 00:09:25.75\00:09:28.85 That was the antagonist to say 00:09:28.88\00:09:30.16 "oh, its all over they're gone" amazing. 00:09:30.19\00:09:32.11 Yeah, that is incredible. 00:09:32.14\00:09:33.17 And I hope is not quite right 00:09:33.20\00:09:34.71 but he's right to some degree 00:09:34.74\00:09:36.81 or the comment wouldn't be made. 00:09:36.84\00:09:38.32 Right, now I think that's true. 00:09:38.35\00:09:40.81 You know, I want to come back to what was we were talking 00:09:40.84\00:09:43.14 about before about the magazine 00:09:43.17\00:09:44.81 going out to so many people enabled by the donations 00:09:44.84\00:09:49.59 but there's interesting part of this 00:09:49.62\00:09:51.15 and I thought of it many times most of these recipients 00:09:51.18\00:09:53.80 whether they are congressman, senators, 00:09:53.83\00:09:55.68 judges, lawyers they didn't ask for it. 00:09:55.71\00:09:58.28 Right. 00:09:58.31\00:09:59.34 We believe or our sponsors 00:09:59.37\00:10:01.00 believed that they need to have this. 00:10:01.03\00:10:02.58 So they informed and educated. 00:10:02.61\00:10:05.72 But it's amazing to me how few of them 00:10:05.75\00:10:07.92 send letters or notes saying 00:10:07.95\00:10:09.37 "you know saying I didn't ask for this take it of the list." 00:10:09.40\00:10:11.42 Right. 00:10:11.45\00:10:12.48 Very seldom. Right. 00:10:12.51\00:10:13.98 I mean proportionality everyday 00:10:14.01\00:10:15.89 or two we will get a contact 00:10:15.92\00:10:18.53 that which sometimes might be a couple of addresses. 00:10:18.56\00:10:20.53 Because you're dealing with the judges office 00:10:20.56\00:10:22.22 or some administrative office but it's rare. 00:10:22.25\00:10:25.32 And to me that's great indication 00:10:25.35\00:10:27.14 of what the value for what we're sending out. 00:10:27.17\00:10:29.27 Absolutely, absolutely. 00:10:29.30\00:10:30.33 Well not only are individual sponsoring the subscriptions 00:10:30.36\00:10:33.07 they're certainly prayerfully doing that as well. 00:10:33.10\00:10:36.53 And I think they're be doing directed 00:10:36.56\00:10:38.54 you know as to who needs these subscriptions 00:10:38.57\00:10:40.71 and I think you know certainly 00:10:40.74\00:10:43.02 the Holy Spirit is that work as well. 00:10:43.05\00:10:44.82 But it's interesting most of the time 00:10:44.85\00:10:47.63 when we hear from individuals 00:10:47.66\00:10:50.16 we are being told about updated information. 00:10:50.19\00:10:53.53 You know here's the new city's clerks name 00:10:53.56\00:10:56.06 and so you need to change the name of subscription. 00:10:56.09\00:10:58.68 We've heard a couple of times from I believe both times 00:10:58.71\00:11:02.75 that I am recalling from judges 00:11:02.78\00:11:05.20 who are now retiring from the bench. 00:11:05.23\00:11:06.78 Oh, I know. And wanted to receive it at home. 00:11:06.81\00:11:09.74 Can they keep getting it 00:11:09.77\00:11:10.80 and they've appreciated some of these. 00:11:10.83\00:11:11.91 Can they keep getting at home? Yes, yes. 00:11:11.94\00:11:13.47 So certainly you know 00:11:13.50\00:11:15.61 its God is very good and is certainly 00:11:15.64\00:11:19.40 I think blessed this ministry 00:11:19.43\00:11:20.85 and the Holy Spirit is worked 00:11:20.88\00:11:24.77 on the hearts of these individuals 00:11:24.80\00:11:26.19 and Liberty has certainly made an impact in cases 00:11:26.22\00:11:30.18 that have been tried or in fought 00:11:30.21\00:11:32.02 or you know individuals have had religious liberty issues, 00:11:32.05\00:11:36.17 you know, the magazine has made it's mark. 00:11:36.20\00:11:38.90 Absolutely and you reminded me as story 00:11:38.93\00:11:41.77 just heard from the man himself a few weeks ago. 00:11:41.80\00:11:46.98 Seventh-day Adventist at an event 00:11:47.01\00:11:48.87 I went to he told me, he said, 00:11:48.90\00:11:50.48 you know I used to work in a county office. 00:11:50.51\00:11:52.25 He was highly placed local government official 00:11:52.28\00:11:55.37 who would worked for many years prior to that in the CII. 00:11:55.40\00:12:00.17 And he says I was tough-- 00:12:00.20\00:12:02.29 He say you know no nonsense guys 00:12:02.32\00:12:05.84 but this magazine came Liberty Magazine. 00:12:05.87\00:12:08.22 And he said "he read it he said 00:12:08.25\00:12:09.50 I want to find that more about this group 00:12:09.53\00:12:11.41 and he said I became the Seventh-day Adventist 00:12:11.44\00:12:13.42 because of the Liberty Magazine." 00:12:13.45\00:12:14.66 Oh, praise the Lord. 00:12:14.69\00:12:15.72 And you don't often here 00:12:15.75\00:12:17.62 that with any publication even Science of the Times 00:12:17.65\00:12:20.92 which is a clearly design missionary paper. 00:12:20.95\00:12:24.83 Usually there're several factors 00:12:24.86\00:12:27.20 but here this man said "I read it 00:12:27.23\00:12:29.13 and because of that I wanted to become a member." 00:12:29.16\00:12:31.55 Right, well it's interesting 00:12:31.58\00:12:33.31 because, you know, our audience 00:12:33.34\00:12:35.08 that we write for is for the non-Adventist audience. 00:12:35.11\00:12:38.15 But in that way you know 00:12:38.18\00:12:39.27 I think as someone who's been on staffer 00:12:39.30\00:12:42.36 I think a decade now 00:12:42.39\00:12:43.82 and avid reader of the editorials 00:12:43.85\00:12:45.36 which you write each issue. 00:12:45.39\00:12:47.33 Good, I didn't know you were reading. 00:12:47.36\00:12:50.42 We do not hide the fact we're published 00:12:50.45\00:12:52.77 by a Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:12:52.80\00:12:54.53 You know, we feature 00:12:54.56\00:12:56.49 you know some Adventist authors and some Adventist stories 00:12:56.52\00:13:00.46 and always the editorials are explaining 00:13:00.49\00:13:04.21 why this is so important to us. 00:13:04.24\00:13:06.32 You know why the-- and I really appreciate 00:13:06.35\00:13:08.68 that you know its something 00:13:08.71\00:13:09.81 that we should be proud of our churches 00:13:09.84\00:13:11.13 distinctive history with us. 00:13:11.16\00:13:12.91 Well, we don't need to be worried 00:13:12.94\00:13:14.45 about I mean they are Adventist distinctive included here. 00:13:14.48\00:13:19.27 But separation of church 00:13:19.30\00:13:21.49 and state which is constitutional, 00:13:21.52\00:13:23.62 reiterating the US narrative of why religious liberty 00:13:23.65\00:13:27.29 so important going back to the protestant reaffirmation, 00:13:27.32\00:13:30.80 then talking about enlightenment 00:13:30.83\00:13:33.64 naturalistic arguments for rights of conscience. 00:13:33.67\00:13:37.59 These are far wider than just an Adventist concern 00:13:37.62\00:13:40.55 but they all support our concerns, so that's-- 00:13:40.58\00:13:42.60 Absolutely. 00:13:42.63\00:13:43.66 That's really where I am very confident 00:13:43.69\00:13:45.31 in telling people we're Seventh-day Adventist 00:13:45.34\00:13:47.96 because it's not just an Adventist story 00:13:47.99\00:13:49.78 but it supports the Adventist story. 00:13:49.81\00:13:52.26 Right, right. 00:13:52.29\00:13:53.71 And we have great faith in the legislators 00:13:53.74\00:13:56.67 that when they're reading this regularly 00:13:56.70\00:13:59.56 when an issue comes up they won't just apply 00:13:59.59\00:14:02.39 it to Adventist they will see the bigger picture. 00:14:02.42\00:14:03.89 Absolutely. 00:14:03.92\00:14:04.95 And as they administrator religious liberty 00:14:04.98\00:14:06.55 generally well it will be good 00:14:06.58\00:14:08.79 for an Adventist interaction with government. 00:14:08.82\00:14:09.85 It benefits not only ourselves our church members 00:14:09.88\00:14:12.52 but others in our community, 00:14:12.55\00:14:14.43 you know, who we want to see in heaven as well. 00:14:14.46\00:14:17.00 Absolutely. 00:14:17.03\00:14:18.06 We will back after a short break to continue this discussion 00:14:18.09\00:14:21.08 of getting the word out Religious Liberty Campaigns 00:14:21.11\00:14:24.84 and Promotions to you the viewer 00:14:24.87\00:14:26.85 and the supporter of the Liberty.
