Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.57\00:00:08.19 Before the break with guest Melissa Reid 00:00:08.22\00:00:10.82 she was hitting a high point and I cut her short 00:00:10.85\00:00:13.02 because I want to hear more about it. 00:00:13.05\00:00:15.12 The NARLA summit not too many months ago 00:00:15.15\00:00:18.00 I was there. Right. 00:00:18.03\00:00:19.15 You let out and it went wonderfully I thought. 00:00:19.18\00:00:22.15 Tell us something about it. 00:00:22.18\00:00:23.21 It was an incredible experience again 00:00:23.24\00:00:25.96 a lot of times when we're putting together programs 00:00:25.99\00:00:28.82 we don't realize how much we actually will be blessed. 00:00:28.85\00:00:32.19 But it was fantastic. 00:00:32.22\00:00:33.84 We had Dr. Joseph Kidder come from Andrews University 00:00:33.87\00:00:37.99 and handle the spiritual emphasis 00:00:38.02\00:00:40.90 for our Friday evening and Sabbath, 00:00:40.93\00:00:43.67 worships messages. 00:00:43.70\00:00:44.78 Tell me something about him. 00:00:44.81\00:00:45.91 Well, he was born and raised 00:00:45.94\00:00:48.68 and became a Christian in Iraq. 00:00:48.71\00:00:51.38 Quite a story tell, yeah. Incredible story, 00:00:51.41\00:00:52.75 quite a story. 00:00:52.78\00:00:53.81 I believe he is been here 3ABN and told us story as well. 00:00:53.84\00:00:57.06 I know we made it available 00:00:57.09\00:00:58.90 on a You tube website which is NARLA video. 00:00:58.93\00:01:01.28 Just an incredible story really started 00:01:01.31\00:01:03.75 that some one out right. 00:01:03.78\00:01:04.81 Again we are not just 00:01:04.84\00:01:06.99 a political advocacy organization 00:01:07.02\00:01:10.38 or one issue advocacy organization. 00:01:10.41\00:01:12.49 We are ministry as I mentioned at the beginning 00:01:12.52\00:01:14.94 and so I always feel like it's so important 00:01:14.97\00:01:17.17 to emphasize the reasons that are-- 00:01:17.20\00:01:19.91 you know religious freedom is so dear to us. 00:01:19.94\00:01:22.21 It's because our religion, our faith is so dear to us. 00:01:22.24\00:01:25.69 So anyway I appreciate it. 00:01:25.72\00:01:26.75 So his story underscored that it's not a theory 00:01:26.78\00:01:30.74 it affects the lives of people in a pulp. 00:01:30.77\00:01:32.73 Oh boy, they are very safety. 00:01:32.76\00:01:33.91 Absolutely. 00:01:33.94\00:01:35.01 And have a-- and yet I'm sure, 00:01:35.04\00:01:37.60 I didn't hear his at least I don't remember his story. 00:01:37.63\00:01:39.25 Yes. 00:01:39.28\00:01:40.31 But you know in parts of the world like, like Iraq 00:01:40.34\00:01:43.93 and Egypt now and Syria a person that's a Christian 00:01:43.96\00:01:48.42 really runs a risks just about speaking out on their faith. 00:01:48.45\00:01:52.26 Oh, yes he is-- And yet how do you know. 00:01:52.29\00:01:54.52 You can't be an invisible Christian. 00:01:54.55\00:01:56.79 He is an individual too that you see 00:01:56.82\00:02:00.03 even if he doesn't say a word 00:02:00.06\00:02:01.35 you see Christ radiating from him. 00:02:01.38\00:02:03.32 Do you know what I mean, it's very incredible, 00:02:03.35\00:02:04.99 it's very interesting, he is very inspiring. 00:02:05.02\00:02:06.93 But yes his own family rejected him, 00:02:06.96\00:02:10.28 they beat him because of his faith. 00:02:10.31\00:02:14.86 You know it coincided with him taking national exams 00:02:14.89\00:02:17.75 for school and there, you know, 00:02:17.78\00:02:19.93 was lots of family pressure. 00:02:19.96\00:02:22.55 And he stood, stood strong for Christ. 00:02:22.58\00:02:25.02 You know, he was convicted. 00:02:25.05\00:02:26.75 He had the Holy Spirit, 00:02:26.78\00:02:28.12 and now he is professor 00:02:28.15\00:02:30.27 in theology at Andrews University. 00:02:30.30\00:02:31.76 Yeah, there was also a lot of young people 00:02:31.79\00:02:33.57 at the NARLA over there. 00:02:33.60\00:02:34.93 Exactly, so we put together this program. 00:02:34.96\00:02:38.38 It's a three day program Friday, Saturday, Sunday, 00:02:38.41\00:02:40.47 I'm sorry and then Monday. 00:02:40.50\00:02:42.37 And we partnered with a Pacific Union 00:02:42.40\00:02:45.21 Religious Liberty Department 00:02:45.24\00:02:46.43 and they have a program this was their second year 00:02:46.46\00:02:48.77 to partner with us its called Freedom Class Room. 00:02:48.80\00:02:52.76 And it's group of high school individuals 00:02:52.79\00:02:55.53 who come to the Washington DC area 00:02:55.56\00:02:58.29 and I think they spent a week or ten days 00:02:58.32\00:03:02.75 just becoming familiar with religious liberty heroes his-- 00:03:02.78\00:03:09.69 Yeah, they want to give them grounding in the history 00:03:09.72\00:03:11.93 and the philosophy and even some experience 00:03:11.96\00:03:14.13 in contacting administrators-- 00:03:14.16\00:03:16.03 Yes, and so-- Or legislators. 00:03:16.06\00:03:17.63 So we-- our two groups came together 00:03:17.66\00:03:20.63 on a couple of the days 00:03:20.66\00:03:21.69 particularly on Monday lobbying day. 00:03:21.72\00:03:23.82 And that was a real opportunity for again 00:03:23.85\00:03:25.94 for church members for our advocates, 00:03:25.97\00:03:27.80 our NARLA members to actually advocate on behalf of 00:03:27.83\00:03:33.85 those who are not able to advocate. 00:03:33.88\00:03:36.37 Usually you don't have to voice anywhere. 00:03:36.40\00:03:37.97 And what I mean by that is we are a group 00:03:38.00\00:03:41.70 went and lobbied for particular 00:03:41.73\00:03:43.53 for the passage of a particular bill 00:03:43.56\00:03:46.34 which would create a position a special envoy 00:03:46.37\00:03:49.01 for religious freedom specifically. 00:03:49.04\00:03:51.03 Which is since happened. 00:03:51.06\00:03:52.28 Specifically we are, you are spoiling the ending. 00:03:52.31\00:03:55.74 Sorry. 00:03:55.77\00:03:56.80 Which is but it was dealing specifically 00:03:56.83\00:03:59.19 with the Middle East and central Asia. 00:03:59.22\00:04:01.37 Well, our viewers know if they you know 00:04:01.40\00:04:03.92 in watching the news that the Middle East and central Asia 00:04:03.95\00:04:06.74 is a terrible place for Christians right now 00:04:06.77\00:04:10.29 for believers right now. 00:04:10.32\00:04:11.39 Yes it was, we intend to have whole program on that. 00:04:11.42\00:04:12.82 And so we felt like it was really a bill 00:04:12.85\00:04:14.64 that we get behind in an advocate behalf of. 00:04:14.67\00:04:17.59 So we went and made appointments with you know 00:04:17.62\00:04:20.96 the representatives from representing those individuals 00:04:20.99\00:04:25.08 that you know they had come in to participate in this summit 00:04:25.11\00:04:27.91 with their offices, with their staff members 00:04:27.94\00:04:30.59 and share with them you know 00:04:30.62\00:04:32.68 our desire for this bill to be passed 00:04:32.71\00:04:35.65 and had some really good contacts. 00:04:35.68\00:04:38.40 Some-- and again had this young people involved. 00:04:38.43\00:04:42.05 This time it was a lot of high school seniors. 00:04:42.08\00:04:46.18 They were thrilled they don't want to go 00:04:46.21\00:04:47.84 beyond the schedules appointments. 00:04:47.87\00:04:49.19 They wanted to just cold call offices and say now, 00:04:49.22\00:04:51.74 you know we want to just drop of this material. 00:04:51.77\00:04:54.71 You could see them be very excited about it. 00:04:54.74\00:04:56.42 And then for us as you mentioned it was thrilling just 00:04:56.45\00:04:59.23 a few weeks ago we were able to report back to them 00:04:59.26\00:05:02.01 that this bill had in fact passed, 00:05:02.04\00:05:05.01 the house version of the bill. 00:05:05.04\00:05:06.17 And so it's you know they were able to see 00:05:06.20\00:05:09.36 their hard work and their passion pay off. 00:05:09.39\00:05:12.78 So it's just a real, a real great opportunity. 00:05:12.81\00:05:15.01 Again for individuals who might be interested in 00:05:15.04\00:05:17.32 attending this sort of events 00:05:17.35\00:05:18.52 it's an annual event we do it in the summer 00:05:18.55\00:05:20.46 typically around June-- 00:05:20.49\00:05:22.07 It will be on your, on the website. 00:05:22.10\00:05:23.17 On the website. 00:05:23.20\00:05:24.33 Yes, religiousliberty.info again is the website. 00:05:24.36\00:05:27.16 It's also libertymagazine.org and we get that. 00:05:27.19\00:05:29.85 Absolutely libertymagazine.org 00:05:29.88\00:05:32.15 is also just real integral 00:05:32.18\00:05:34.80 to our religious liberty ministry. 00:05:34.83\00:05:36.59 This is the one to pump now. 00:05:36.62\00:05:38.03 But you reminded me that I don't mention 00:05:38.06\00:05:39.81 libertymagzine.org enough on this program. 00:05:39.84\00:05:43.61 So, yeah, so any way it's been an exciting year for NARLA. 00:05:43.64\00:05:46.98 We're thrilled you know with certainly 00:05:47.01\00:05:49.50 those who have not been a part of the ministry. 00:05:49.53\00:05:52.77 Yeah, we certainly encourage them to become involved 00:05:52.80\00:05:55.84 to become advocates in their own community. 00:05:55.87\00:05:57.98 You know, we will send out more posts on out Face book page 00:05:58.01\00:06:01.23 and on our website and also we send out email alerts. 00:06:01.26\00:06:03.55 It's another reason to go to the websites. 00:06:03.58\00:06:06.04 You can sign up for email alerts on our websites. 00:06:06.07\00:06:09.18 So if there is ever a piece of legislation 00:06:09.21\00:06:12.16 or may be a particular case that you have not heard about 00:06:12.19\00:06:15.13 that we want to be able to tell you but share with you. 00:06:15.16\00:06:17.73 It's a way that's coming directly to your home, 00:06:17.76\00:06:20.54 to your email accounts. 00:06:20.57\00:06:21.60 So I would encourage individuals to do that as well. 00:06:21.63\00:06:23.50 Yeah and I've never really said this before 00:06:23.53\00:06:26.37 but I think NARLA has the ability to get involved 00:06:26.40\00:06:28.77 with many different initiatives. 00:06:28.80\00:06:31.46 Where Liberty as far as the magazine goes 00:06:31.49\00:06:34.84 I'm more and more convinced that it leads to sort of cherry pick 00:06:34.87\00:06:39.03 even the issues beyond that to dealing things 00:06:39.06\00:06:43.64 in a strategic over all educational way. 00:06:43.67\00:06:46.77 Because you know one magazine what can you do? 00:06:46.80\00:06:49.56 We can fill it up with lots of little interesting stories 00:06:49.59\00:06:52.00 but, wouldn't explain to people. 00:06:52.03\00:06:54.86 But yet an organization can afford to it, 00:06:54.89\00:06:57.25 it should get involved with everything. 00:06:57.28\00:06:59.26 Yes. 00:06:59.29\00:07:00.34 In fact when you talk about an organization 00:07:00.37\00:07:02.41 when you talk about a social situation 00:07:02.44\00:07:04.45 it's the very little things that quickly percolate up into 00:07:04.48\00:07:08.31 what seems like major stuff but you can't deal with that 00:07:08.34\00:07:10.85 so easily at that level. 00:07:10.88\00:07:11.91 But a lot of people that are watching the little litmus tests 00:07:11.94\00:07:15.75 if you like that little science can make a real difference. 00:07:15.78\00:07:18.29 Just they like if you can't get more or more these 00:07:18.32\00:07:21.14 young activists going and visiting legislatures. 00:07:21.17\00:07:23.77 They will get this subliminal message 00:07:23.80\00:07:25.82 young people in this country are interested in this. 00:07:25.85\00:07:27.96 I better pay attention. 00:07:27.99\00:07:29.02 Right, right. 00:07:29.05\00:07:30.08 And I was actually speaking with a individual Dennis Seaton 00:07:30.11\00:07:34.01 who handles the advocacy work for the Pacific Union. 00:07:34.04\00:07:36.05 Out of Sacramento. 00:07:36.08\00:07:37.11 Out of Sacramento and he said he always has 00:07:37.14\00:07:40.84 gets his foot in the door a lot faster-- 00:07:40.87\00:07:43.31 Right, with young people of course. 00:07:43.34\00:07:44.37 Yes, young people involved. 00:07:44.40\00:07:45.49 So but what I was gonna say 00:07:45.52\00:07:48.11 you and I are both involved in this religious liberty 00:07:48.14\00:07:50.20 roundtable in Washington, DC. 00:07:50.23\00:07:52.83 It's an opportunity for us to work with 00:07:52.86\00:07:55.70 religious freedom advocates from other faith groups. 00:07:55.73\00:07:58.29 We have six Jewish organizations Baptists. 00:07:58.32\00:08:02.01 You name it they are represented in this round table. 00:08:02.04\00:08:04.38 It's really incredible to look in the conference room 00:08:04.41\00:08:06.59 and see these individuals 00:08:06.62\00:08:07.75 and their faiths represented there. 00:08:07.78\00:08:09.66 But NARLA provides an opportunity 00:08:09.69\00:08:14.26 or this roundtable provides an opportunity for NARLA 00:08:14.29\00:08:16.75 to be able to sign on to particular letters 00:08:16.78\00:08:18.90 like if we are sending it to. 00:08:18.93\00:08:20.37 If there something going on we have all seen that 00:08:20.40\00:08:22.33 the situation of Christians been persecuted in Nigeria. 00:08:22.36\00:08:28.02 And we were able to sign on is an organization 00:08:28.05\00:08:31.28 to a letter to the Secretary of State. 00:08:31.31\00:08:33.84 I think it was Kerry, 00:08:33.87\00:08:34.90 it might have been Clinton at that time. 00:08:34.93\00:08:36.19 But I think-- I believe we was Kerry and say 00:08:36.22\00:08:39.34 you know we demand for it 00:08:39.37\00:08:42.34 you know for the for our state department 00:08:42.37\00:08:44.15 become involved our government to, 00:08:44.18\00:08:45.99 in a care again about this people 00:08:46.02\00:08:47.84 who don't have any count-- who don't have any voice 00:08:47.87\00:08:51.93 to be able to speak after them selves. 00:08:51.96\00:08:53.34 So again NARLA is the able to speak for individuals 00:08:53.37\00:08:56.90 who don't have that opportunity for themselves. 00:08:56.93\00:08:58.03 Yeah, something I have never heard said but 00:08:58.06\00:08:59.70 it's my more than understanding-- 00:08:59.73\00:09:03.47 I have a great burden this should be so. 00:09:03.50\00:09:05.57 Again Liberty magazine is dealing with big issues. 00:09:05.60\00:09:09.65 And should exemplify an Adventist view point 00:09:09.68\00:09:13.10 but it's dealing with a wide front 00:09:13.13\00:09:17.09 to be acceptable rather religious groups. 00:09:17.12\00:09:19.14 I do think NARLA has more of an obligation 00:09:19.17\00:09:22.41 to husbands Seventh-day Adventist members 00:09:22.44\00:09:26.16 towards advancing our particular view point 00:09:26.19\00:09:29.70 our particular sensibilities if you like. 00:09:29.73\00:09:33.67 Right. 00:09:33.70\00:09:34.73 It's not exclusive about this but 00:09:34.76\00:09:37.39 it should be extra inclusive of an Adventist sensibility. 00:09:37.42\00:09:40.64 I agree with you completely on that 00:09:40.67\00:09:41.90 and its interesting because NARLA 00:09:41.93\00:09:45.67 never although would say is a separate organization 00:09:45.70\00:09:48.87 from the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:09:48.90\00:09:49.97 And we have made a legal. 00:09:50.00\00:09:51.03 Legally. Yeah, we separated it there. 00:09:51.06\00:09:52.82 We never advocate, 00:09:52.85\00:09:54.32 we never take a position contrary to the church. 00:09:54.35\00:09:57.02 And we only take positions on issues 00:09:57.05\00:09:59.65 that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is taken position 00:09:59.68\00:10:01.07 a position on have a position-- 00:10:01.10\00:10:02.77 That's good. 00:10:02.80\00:10:03.83 And I feel like that's important for us for our integrity 00:10:03.86\00:10:08.04 and for the integrity of our individual members 00:10:08.07\00:10:10.49 to for it to be consistent in that way. 00:10:10.52\00:10:15.23 Writing to Seventh-day Adventist, 00:10:18.19\00:10:20.87 pioneer Adventist visionary Ellen White 00:10:20.90\00:10:23.79 once made a comment that our youth 00:10:23.82\00:10:26.99 an army youth rightly trained can make a huge difference. 00:10:27.02\00:10:32.25 When I think about NARLA 00:10:32.28\00:10:33.81 the North American Religious Liberty Association 00:10:33.84\00:10:36.14 I'm convinced that that's were its future lies. 00:10:36.17\00:10:38.94 We need young people trained 00:10:38.97\00:10:41.88 and sensitive to religious liberty concerns 00:10:41.91\00:10:44.98 and going out into the community dealing with public officials 00:10:45.01\00:10:48.51 and making a difference. 00:10:48.54\00:10:50.22 This is possible and it can happen. 00:10:50.25\00:10:53.17 I know so far NARLA has fulfilled 00:10:53.20\00:10:55.93 an incredible promise that was lightened for so many years. 00:10:55.96\00:10:59.43 And I have to give full credit to Adrian Westney, 00:10:59.46\00:11:02.99 a religious liberty leader for many years 00:11:03.02\00:11:05.85 who in his last years even after he retired 00:11:05.88\00:11:09.15 every time he got together with his fellow 00:11:09.18\00:11:11.14 religious liberty leaders would say "What about NARLA? 00:11:11.17\00:11:13.64 What about NARLA? 00:11:13.67\00:11:14.82 Can we start it up?" 00:11:14.85\00:11:16.41 And today NARLA is alive and well. 00:11:16.44\00:11:18.86 NARLA has plans, NARLA has activities, 00:11:18.89\00:11:21.90 NARLA has young people. 00:11:21.93\00:11:23.70 And most importantly when I look at the worlds situation 00:11:23.73\00:11:26.80 look at the United States situation 00:11:26.83\00:11:28.97 NARLA is facing a world of great possibilities. 00:11:29.00\00:11:33.36 It's not just a time of crisis, 00:11:33.39\00:11:35.46 it is a time of opportunity 00:11:35.49\00:11:37.90 and I believe NARLA is situated to take advantage of that. 00:11:37.93\00:11:42.73 For Liberty Insider this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:42.76\00:11:45.88
