Welcome back to Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.53\00:00:08.11 Before the break with Melissa Reid, 00:00:08.14\00:00:10.90 associate editor of Liberty magazine, 00:00:10.93\00:00:14.06 me the editor of the Liberty, just to put it in context 00:00:14.09\00:00:17.21 and this is an internal liberty discussion of sort. 00:00:17.24\00:00:20.82 Just like we're sitting in the office. Right. 00:00:20.85\00:00:22.65 And we do have similar discussion 00:00:22.68\00:00:24.87 but we were discussing Hobby Lobby, 00:00:24.90\00:00:27.07 this national Hobby craft store chain 00:00:27.10\00:00:33.02 and the Green family owners 00:00:33.05\00:00:35.87 who are deeply committed Christians. 00:00:35.90\00:00:38.06 I don't question that for a minute. 00:00:38.09\00:00:39.12 And we say we respect them for those specifically. 00:00:39.15\00:00:40.34 Absolutely. Yes. 00:00:40.37\00:00:41.40 And just like the Chickafella-- 00:00:41.43\00:00:46.06 Oh, Chick-fil-A. 00:00:46.09\00:00:48.45 Yeah, Chick-fil-A. Yes. 00:00:48.48\00:00:49.76 That company is closed every Sunday 00:00:49.79\00:00:53.00 when they could make great money, 00:00:53.03\00:00:54.86 I am sure if they open on Sunday 00:00:54.89\00:00:55.92 but they believe biblically ironically 00:00:55.95\00:00:59.26 I'm Seventh-day Adventist but they believe that 00:00:59.29\00:01:01.56 that's the Sabbath they should keep. 00:01:01.59\00:01:03.19 Yes. 00:01:03.22\00:01:04.25 I mean, that's a great commitment, 00:01:04.28\00:01:05.33 you have to admire that. 00:01:05.36\00:01:06.39 Absolutely. 00:01:06.42\00:01:07.45 So, you know, anything in this discussion, 00:01:07.48\00:01:09.76 you know, it's not for me 00:01:09.79\00:01:10.82 to question the sincerity of someone. 00:01:10.85\00:01:12.73 But structurally or what's the play here 00:01:12.76\00:01:15.35 makes me very uncomfortable. 00:01:15.38\00:01:17.29 Yeah, yeah. 00:01:17.32\00:01:18.35 And it's been cast, as you said in the break, 00:01:18.38\00:01:21.84 as a religious liberty issue 00:01:21.87\00:01:23.80 and it's a great imposition against Christians. 00:01:23.83\00:01:25.68 But if you really look at it dispassionately, 00:01:25.71\00:01:29.08 are the Christians being disadvantage 00:01:29.11\00:01:30.70 or they being denatured in their attempts to get others 00:01:30.73\00:01:36.60 who don't make that claim to act as they do? 00:01:36.63\00:01:39.21 Yeah. No, absolutely. 00:01:39.24\00:01:40.56 I think one other things that we mentioned 00:01:40.59\00:01:43.31 during the break was the idea that it's a very-- 00:01:43.34\00:01:48.21 it goes against our sort of our Protestant ideals 00:01:48.24\00:01:52.02 as far as the individual having the right, 00:01:52.05\00:01:54.58 him having the relationship one on one 00:01:54.61\00:01:56.62 and the commitment one on one with our Savior. 00:01:56.65\00:01:59.47 Yes, and I cease on that 00:01:59.50\00:02:01.02 when you said that it is very true 00:02:01.05\00:02:03.17 and it's perhaps true, the viewers might realize 00:02:03.20\00:02:07.26 because there is a major shift, 00:02:07.29\00:02:10.20 might be the wrong word 00:02:10.23\00:02:11.28 but I-- a redefinition going on at the moment 00:02:11.31\00:02:16.09 led by the Roman Catholic Church 00:02:16.12\00:02:17.92 but it's taken root in governmental circles, 00:02:17.95\00:02:22.81 even Protestants are pushing it 00:02:22.84\00:02:24.27 and it's emphasizing the public good 00:02:24.30\00:02:27.13 or the corporate religious interest 00:02:27.16\00:02:30.56 over the individual religious interests. 00:02:30.59\00:02:32.92 Right. Right. 00:02:32.95\00:02:34.39 And I don't think that both dwell at all religious freedom. 00:02:34.42\00:02:38.74 I don't either. 00:02:38.77\00:02:40.45 You know, I certainly appreciate, 00:02:40.48\00:02:42.17 one thing I appreciate about our church, 00:02:42.20\00:02:45.05 the Seventh-day Adventist church is that for the-- 00:02:45.08\00:02:47.99 we are very deliberately a political. 00:02:48.02\00:02:51.57 We don't take positions on issues 00:02:51.60\00:02:56.22 that are not related to our core doctrines. 00:02:56.25\00:02:58.68 We don't go out and have astound by every time 00:02:58.71\00:03:01.02 there's particular issue going on and take a firm stands. 00:03:01.05\00:03:04.28 Because as a church our organization-- 00:03:04.31\00:03:06.46 our mantra or reason for existing is evangelism, 00:03:06.49\00:03:10.32 it's introducing-- yeah, it's introducing. 00:03:10.35\00:03:12.50 It's not you know, going in front of the camera 00:03:12.53\00:03:14.78 and saying, here's what we believe 00:03:14.81\00:03:16.06 because that's our church members believes. 00:03:16.09\00:03:18.62 You know, we all come together 00:03:18.65\00:03:20.01 as this corporate body with the-- 00:03:20.04\00:03:22.31 you know, with similar believes. 00:03:22.34\00:03:23.37 But we do not speak on behalf of our individual consciousness 00:03:23.40\00:03:27.29 and I really appreciate that as a member. 00:03:27.32\00:03:29.86 I know it can be frustrating sometimes 00:03:29.89\00:03:31.72 because if you as an individual have a particular belief 00:03:31.75\00:03:36.44 and you want your church to stand behind you 00:03:36.47\00:03:38.41 and have this back or whatever. 00:03:38.44\00:03:39.59 And many times again, if it's related 00:03:39.62\00:03:41.41 to our belief system and our doctrines 00:03:41.44\00:03:43.22 then we do take firm stands. 00:03:43.25\00:03:44.28 This is the moral principal. 00:03:44.31\00:03:45.34 And moral principles, exactly. 00:03:45.37\00:03:46.94 Of course the church should has spoken at. Right. 00:03:46.97\00:03:48.85 But you are right, our church-- again, 00:03:48.88\00:03:52.77 I need to qualify when you say it's not political, 00:03:52.80\00:03:55.88 it's not partisan. Exactly. 00:03:55.91\00:03:57.63 You can't help but being political. 00:03:57.66\00:03:59.92 And I have to say this because I am sure 00:03:59.95\00:04:01.53 there's people watching this program think, 00:04:01.56\00:04:03.23 now they talk about political things, 00:04:03.26\00:04:04.29 of course it's political. 00:04:04.32\00:04:05.38 Yes, partisan is correct. 00:04:05.41\00:04:06.44 Can't avoid that but we shouldn't be partisan. 00:04:06.47\00:04:08.82 But what you are saying I think is even true as well. 00:04:08.85\00:04:12.58 The Adventist church or any Christian 00:04:12.61\00:04:16.12 or indeed I think any religious faith, 00:04:16.15\00:04:18.92 it's dangerous to be political. 00:04:18.95\00:04:22.03 Jesus was quite polite 00:04:22.06\00:04:23.90 that His solution was another world. 00:04:23.93\00:04:26.28 Absolutely. Is to change individuals. 00:04:26.31\00:04:28.23 So when a church is too involved 00:04:28.26\00:04:30.32 politically even if it's not partisan, 00:04:30.35\00:04:32.66 I think it's sort of skewed from the real emphasis 00:04:32.69\00:04:35.28 of Christian living, regeneration 00:04:35.31\00:04:37.45 and preparation for, for spiritual eternity. 00:04:37.48\00:04:41.42 Right. 00:04:41.45\00:04:42.48 Well, and that's why we see 00:04:42.51\00:04:43.89 you know, very frequently on here in the magazine 00:04:43.92\00:04:46.17 we hear this idea of the Christian nation 00:04:46.20\00:04:47.94 and things like that. 00:04:47.97\00:04:49.06 To me that's very reminiscing of the disciples 00:04:49.09\00:04:51.70 and them wanting to establish, 00:04:51.73\00:04:53.63 you know, this kingdom here on earth. 00:04:53.66\00:04:55.18 I think you know, several thousand years later 00:04:55.21\00:04:57.74 we still sort of haven't learned 00:04:57.77\00:04:59.03 as Christians, as followers of Christ. 00:04:59.06\00:05:00.87 That's the human tendency. Yeah. 00:05:00.90\00:05:02.32 We are all Judah at a time. 00:05:02.35\00:05:05.24 Now that was Judah's problem. 00:05:05.27\00:05:06.61 Morally he turned out to be a traitor. 00:05:06.64\00:05:08.02 Yeah. 00:05:08.05\00:05:09.08 But it's very obvious 00:05:09.11\00:05:11.09 that Judah shared this sort of assumption, 00:05:11.12\00:05:12.84 the kingdom of heaven now, you know, a kingdom. 00:05:12.87\00:05:15.61 He want to have Jesus crowned. 00:05:15.64\00:05:19.80 The story is fairly planned 00:05:19.83\00:05:21.15 and Adventists have dwelt on a little lot 00:05:21.18\00:05:25.13 that after that triumphal entry 00:05:25.16\00:05:26.73 that the crown was offered to Jesus. 00:05:26.76\00:05:28.23 Yes. 00:05:28.26\00:05:29.29 And of course He turned it down, 00:05:29.32\00:05:30.39 that was as He said before Pilot, 00:05:30.42\00:05:31.99 "My kingdom is not of this world." 00:05:32.02\00:05:33.45 Right. Amen. 00:05:33.48\00:05:34.51 And that's a-- I am-- 00:05:34.54\00:05:35.57 and I am so happy that that's the case. 00:05:35.60\00:05:37.07 Yeah. 00:05:37.10\00:05:38.13 Well, now because He also, 00:05:38.16\00:05:39.75 Jesus made the comment again 00:05:39.78\00:05:40.98 and close at that time, he said, you know, 00:05:41.01\00:05:43.76 "All that take up the sword will die by the sword." 00:05:43.79\00:05:46.00 So if you get too hung up with this world, 00:05:46.03\00:05:47.79 this world will chew you up and spit you out. 00:05:47.82\00:05:49.72 Absolutely. 00:05:49.75\00:05:50.78 Christ kingdom is another order. 00:05:50.81\00:05:52.72 Absolutely. 00:05:52.75\00:05:53.78 So back then to Hobby Lobby 00:05:53.81\00:05:55.41 and for a profit business having rights, 00:05:55.44\00:05:58.84 do you feel like they should have no rights 00:05:58.87\00:06:02.19 or do you think they should have more rights 00:06:02.22\00:06:04.47 than the individual or where are you standing? 00:06:04.50\00:06:07.55 No, I don't think they should have more rights 00:06:07.58\00:06:08.85 but we need to be careful, they are not singled out 00:06:08.88\00:06:11.12 and one of the courts analyzed this in relation 00:06:11.15\00:06:17.85 to the Religious Freedom Restriction Act 00:06:17.88\00:06:19.67 which is interesting. 00:06:19.70\00:06:20.73 We often say that it's correctly 00:06:20.76\00:06:23.47 that it been declared on constitutional 00:06:23.50\00:06:25.17 but not in valid for the Federal Government. 00:06:25.20\00:06:27.69 And so this is more relation to how the Federal Government, 00:06:27.72\00:06:30.62 look at businesses, corporations. 00:06:30.65\00:06:32.63 Right. 00:06:32.66\00:06:34.42 And no, I don't think they have more right 00:06:34.45\00:06:37.69 but remember, the Supreme Court have said 00:06:37.72\00:06:40.02 that corporations are individuals. 00:06:40.05\00:06:41.83 Yeah. 00:06:41.86\00:06:42.96 And yet-- 00:06:42.99\00:06:45.26 I've got to put my glasses on to pick up my own notes 00:06:45.29\00:06:47.50 but I noticed that the Sixth Circuit 00:06:47.53\00:06:50.07 said that, "A Roman Catholic 00:06:50.10\00:06:51.61 manufacturing company in Michigan is not a person." 00:06:51.64\00:06:56.76 Well, that's interesting. 00:06:56.79\00:06:57.90 Yes, I think so they have set up a contradiction. 00:06:57.93\00:07:00.50 Yeah. 00:07:00.53\00:07:01.56 And certainly they should not have rights 00:07:01.59\00:07:05.63 greater than the individual. 00:07:05.66\00:07:07.19 That's why I said, the individual 00:07:07.22\00:07:08.25 constant drive should triumph the other. 00:07:08.28\00:07:09.59 Right. 00:07:09.62\00:07:10.65 And I think in a secular environment 00:07:10.68\00:07:13.50 we don't want even an individual 00:07:13.53\00:07:16.12 but certainly a business that sort of faceless, 00:07:16.15\00:07:18.78 representing a religious interest, 00:07:18.81\00:07:20.91 we don't want it having the ability to-- 00:07:20.94\00:07:23.87 and this is by force or by mandate or you know 00:07:23.90\00:07:28.25 by default to restrict other people's choices. 00:07:28.28\00:07:32.87 Right. 00:07:32.90\00:07:33.93 Well, so and then if we want to keep it on 00:07:33.96\00:07:36.86 religious exemptions 00:07:36.89\00:07:39.20 and the religious freedom of a business 00:07:39.23\00:07:40.81 but take it on to the small business level 00:07:40.84\00:07:42.70 and then move to the same sex marriage debate 00:07:42.73\00:07:45.62 and we're seeing several situations were 00:07:45.65\00:07:48.06 it's a wedding cake designer or a-- 00:07:48.09\00:07:50.85 You opened up something we can could spend a case on it 00:07:50.88\00:07:52.90 and I really believe that's where this is heading. 00:07:52.93\00:07:54.85 Yeah. 00:07:54.88\00:07:57.00 The Roman Catholics being consistent on contraception 00:07:57.03\00:07:59.48 and that's important 00:07:59.51\00:08:00.54 but I think this is phase two, 00:08:00.57\00:08:01.89 it's gonna be on the gay marriage issue. 00:08:01.92\00:08:03.74 Yeah. 00:08:03.77\00:08:04.80 Well, it certainly is an interesting discussion 00:08:04.83\00:08:06.69 and like I said, we're so grateful 00:08:06.72\00:08:08.81 that this family that runs this organization 00:08:08.84\00:08:12.16 are so-- are such passionate Christians, 00:08:12.19\00:08:16.28 passionate advocates for their believes 00:08:16.31\00:08:18.66 and so we certainly don't want to take anything 00:08:18.69\00:08:20.39 away from that conversation 00:08:20.42\00:08:22.11 or from those-- from their stands there. 00:08:22.14\00:08:25.67 But it's an interesting conversation 00:08:25.70\00:08:27.75 as far as religious freedom of an organization, 00:08:27.78\00:08:31.79 of a-- for profit business 00:08:31.82\00:08:33.71 and should those rights triumph the rights 00:08:33.74\00:08:35.91 of their individual employee. 00:08:35.94\00:08:40.84 Often when talking of the religious liberty leaders 00:08:40.87\00:08:43.75 and particularly lawyers involved 00:08:43.78\00:08:45.58 in religious liberty affairs 00:08:45.61\00:08:47.94 we get on to the discussions 00:08:47.97\00:08:49.00 of where these religious liberty extend. 00:08:49.03\00:08:51.40 And almost invariably they will say something like, 00:08:51.43\00:08:53.90 well, you can't, you can't yell fire in a crowded room. 00:08:53.93\00:08:56.12 That's not allowed. 00:08:56.15\00:08:57.18 There's a certain level that's unacceptable. 00:08:57.21\00:09:00.61 And in my view Hobby Lobby 00:09:00.64\00:09:03.90 and the Roman Catholic churches 00:09:03.93\00:09:06.52 claims that their religious freedom are being restricted 00:09:06.55\00:09:09.37 by the healthcare mandate. 00:09:09.40\00:09:11.27 Well, I am not totally wrong, 00:09:11.30\00:09:13.95 I at least fire with the lower case 00:09:13.98\00:09:17.03 if because in reality there are huge 00:09:17.06\00:09:20.93 religious liberty issues at stake in the United States. 00:09:20.96\00:09:24.46 There are huge religious liberty tragedies at play in the world, 00:09:24.49\00:09:28.79 not least in the Middle East 00:09:28.82\00:09:31.08 where Christians are being killed in large numbers. 00:09:31.11\00:09:33.80 And while I wouldn't dismiss these concerns of the individual 00:09:33.83\00:09:38.70 and the business feeling uncomfortable 00:09:38.73\00:09:41.79 with being required even to provide 00:09:41.82\00:09:43.80 a certain care that's inconsistent. 00:09:43.83\00:09:46.14 We need to keep things in perspective 00:09:46.17\00:09:49.04 and not cold fire where this merely kindling. 00:09:49.07\00:09:54.34 With Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:09:54.37\00:09:57.66
