Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:23.45\00:00:25.33 This is the program that brings you news, views, 00:00:25.36\00:00:27.55 discussion, updates and analysis of religious liberty events 00:00:27.58\00:00:31.70 in the United States and around the world. 00:00:31.73\00:00:33.76 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine 00:00:33.79\00:00:37.68 and my guest on this program is Attorney Alan Reinach. 00:00:37.71\00:00:42.23 You're executive director of the-- 00:00:42.26\00:00:44.98 Church State Council 00:00:45.01\00:00:46.61 celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2014. 00:00:46.64\00:00:50.07 We worked very closely together. 00:00:50.10\00:00:52.08 I was gonna say I'm an Australian 00:00:55.31\00:00:57.52 but that's really a misleader, misleading thing. 00:00:57.55\00:01:00.08 I've lived most of my life in the United States. 00:01:00.11\00:01:02.16 But here, we're in the US, talking in that context 00:01:02.19\00:01:05.62 but let me invoke another country 00:01:05.65\00:01:08.11 the British parliamentary system. 00:01:08.14\00:01:11.35 I don't know about you but I love to listen to the BBC 00:01:11.38\00:01:14.22 and some of the question time in parliament 00:01:14.25\00:01:16.48 and the raucous, bantering and desperate comments 00:01:16.51\00:01:22.48 that sometimes come from the prime minister 00:01:22.51\00:01:23.82 are quite entertaining. 00:01:23.85\00:01:25.64 I haven't generally seen anything like that 00:01:25.67\00:01:28.12 in the United States, right? 00:01:28.15\00:01:29.41 Okay. But lately, a little bit. 00:01:29.44\00:01:32.32 Think back to-- I think it was 00:01:32.35\00:01:34.62 President Obama's first State of the Union message. 00:01:34.65\00:01:37.99 You remember that? 00:01:38.02\00:01:39.09 Yes, I remember, he stepped out of line of protocol. 00:01:39.12\00:01:44.01 It's usually very prim and proper in the United States, 00:01:44.04\00:01:46.67 and he took the time to rail against 00:01:46.70\00:01:49.90 a recent Supreme Court decision. 00:01:49.93\00:01:52.09 Okay. Citizens united. 00:01:52.12\00:01:54.08 Indeed. 00:01:54.11\00:01:55.16 I mean, that was quite out of character. 00:01:55.19\00:01:56.98 I can't remember anything quite like that. 00:01:57.01\00:01:58.89 They often get on a hobby horse 00:01:58.92\00:02:00.38 about the Cold War or whatever, are these presidents. 00:02:00.41\00:02:02.96 But to take a shot across the bow 00:02:02.99\00:02:05.26 domestic in this case domestic political situation, 00:02:05.29\00:02:08.71 the Supreme Court with something else. 00:02:08.74\00:02:10.23 And then Chief Justice Roberts grimaced 00:02:10.26\00:02:15.59 and was murmuring things and then later-- 00:02:15.62\00:02:17.59 There he is shaking his head. 00:02:17.62\00:02:18.77 Yeah, they went on the warpath so that in its own way 00:02:18.80\00:02:22.14 I think is untoward is any of the yelling and screaming 00:02:22.17\00:02:26.08 in the back bencher cooing and jabbering like apes in England. 00:02:26.11\00:02:31.36 The Supreme-- What's going on? 00:02:31.39\00:02:32.42 The Supreme Court decision that most if you ask Christians, 00:02:32.45\00:02:36.48 you know, what cases do you remember are notable cases, 00:02:36.51\00:02:41.11 they may say for example, Roe v. Wade 00:02:41.14\00:02:43.92 the case that legalized abortion but Citizens United 00:02:43.95\00:02:49.44 is probably the single worst case of the last century. 00:02:49.47\00:02:55.19 Why? 00:02:55.22\00:02:56.25 And the boldest departure from a previous understanding. 00:02:56.28\00:02:58.68 It essentially equates money and speech 00:02:58.71\00:03:02.57 in terms of the political process 00:03:02.60\00:03:05.83 and it gives, you know, the rights of a person-- 00:03:05.86\00:03:10.54 It said-- Personhood. 00:03:10.57\00:03:11.60 Didn't they say corporations are individuals too. 00:03:11.63\00:03:15.11 Well, for purposes of making campaign donations. 00:03:15.14\00:03:19.11 So, you know, now we have to wonder 00:03:19.14\00:03:21.19 when you go out and spend your money at the store 00:03:21.22\00:03:24.41 where a portion--you know, which political party 00:03:24.44\00:03:26.88 a portion of that's gonna go to support for which candidates, 00:03:26.91\00:03:30.09 because corporations are now virtually unrestrained. 00:03:30.12\00:03:35.69 Now Citizens United was the first of a couple of cases 00:03:35.72\00:03:40.19 there is one pending now before the court 00:03:40.22\00:03:42.33 that may go to next step. 00:03:42.36\00:03:43.88 Citizens United did not say that corporations can give or-- 00:03:43.91\00:03:50.50 to candidates directly, but the political action committees 00:03:50.53\00:03:55.77 that essentially support candidates 00:03:55.80\00:03:58.61 and for all intends and purposes 00:03:58.64\00:04:00.49 are directed by the candidates. 00:04:00.52\00:04:02.32 Right, and there's no cap on what they can spend 00:04:02.35\00:04:04.67 unlike wasn't it McCain-- who was his co-sponsor 00:04:04.70\00:04:09.05 on the McCain-Feingold. 00:04:09.08\00:04:11.09 McCain-Feingold, yeah. McCain-Feingold, years ago-- 00:04:11.12\00:04:13.46 Well, that's why it was struck down by Citizens United. 00:04:13.49\00:04:15.84 But there's still limits, you and I couldn't give 00:04:15.87\00:04:20.21 not the way political-- 00:04:20.24\00:04:21.27 That's the next, that's the next case it's likely to fall. 00:04:21.30\00:04:23.92 There's very, very low limit on what you can give 00:04:23.95\00:04:26.13 for a campaign contribution even if you're billionaire. 00:04:26.16\00:04:28.86 Right, but that's the next case it's coming along 00:04:28.89\00:04:31.73 and that's likely to fall. 00:04:31.76\00:04:33.24 So that essentially now we have government, 00:04:33.27\00:04:36.32 oh well, it was, the comedians quip that 00:04:36.35\00:04:41.06 it's finally true now that corporations or persons 00:04:41.09\00:04:44.58 and we have government of by and for the people. 00:04:44.61\00:04:47.82 Well, that's a-- I mean it's funny but it's sad. 00:04:47.85\00:04:50.77 That was Stephen Colbert's quip. 00:04:50.80\00:04:54.41 But it does have the ability to-- 00:04:54.44\00:04:57.09 the potential to subvert this perfect union. 00:04:57.12\00:05:01.90 Well, the idea that our elective officials 00:05:01.93\00:05:05.26 are responsive to their constituents 00:05:05.29\00:05:08.34 is less and less true when the corporations become 00:05:08.37\00:05:12.60 the single most significant part of campaign finance. 00:05:12.63\00:05:17.20 Now I don't claim, I mean sometimes in our discussions 00:05:17.23\00:05:20.42 we claim to be sort of in the mind box 00:05:20.45\00:05:23.44 of the Supreme Court justices. 00:05:23.47\00:05:25.77 I don't really-- how could I know what they think. 00:05:25.80\00:05:28.62 But it appears to me that is very often 00:05:28.65\00:05:30.92 they're very bookish types they study back 00:05:30.95\00:05:33.28 that in a perverse way they've come close to the principles 00:05:33.31\00:05:38.47 that underlay the founding of the United States. 00:05:38.50\00:05:41.37 You know that classic statement that we say 00:05:41.40\00:05:43.88 life liberty in the pursuit of happiness 00:05:43.91\00:05:46.09 was actually originally in-- Life, liberty and property. 00:05:46.12\00:05:49.04 Property. Yeah. 00:05:49.07\00:05:50.69 And I think, but I think it's very dangerous. 00:05:50.72\00:05:54.07 They're going back to origins 00:05:54.10\00:05:55.97 and are requiting political power 00:05:56.00\00:05:58.68 and the ultimate thing that this whole governance protects 00:05:58.71\00:06:02.87 is property and aggregations of property so they, 00:06:02.90\00:06:06.34 that's where they've gotten 00:06:06.37\00:06:07.59 this wonderful new respect for a corporation. 00:06:07.62\00:06:10.70 Look, if you want to go back to our founding fathers, 00:06:10.73\00:06:13.76 James Madison wrote later in life, 00:06:13.79\00:06:17.00 collection of thoughts about separation of church and state. 00:06:17.03\00:06:19.79 Detach memoranda. 00:06:19.82\00:06:20.85 Detach memoranda is what it's been come to be called 00:06:20.88\00:06:24.64 and in it he was very suspect of treating the church 00:06:24.67\00:06:31.09 as a corporate entity and the potential for the church 00:06:31.12\00:06:34.78 to gain money and power and property 00:06:34.81\00:06:37.84 because of its continued existence. 00:06:37.87\00:06:40.48 Which was the standard Protestant viewpoint? 00:06:40.51\00:06:42.74 Well, because you look at Catholicism. 00:06:42.77\00:06:45.61 That was the fight of the reformation 00:06:45.64\00:06:47.43 apart from doctrine that was hitting a nutshell. 00:06:47.46\00:06:49.83 Sure, so what's ironic about Madison's concerns 00:06:49.86\00:06:55.41 so long ago is how it has come true with respect 00:06:55.44\00:07:00.20 not to the religious corporation but the secular corporation 00:07:00.23\00:07:03.70 and just how much power 00:07:03.73\00:07:06.09 the corporate world has obtained in this country. 00:07:06.12\00:07:08.82 But in other discussions we've pointed out 00:07:08.85\00:07:10.66 that the individual is progressively losing 00:07:10.69\00:07:14.91 the right to stand up for their individual conscience. 00:07:14.94\00:07:18.23 There are larger issues and I even thrown in the-- 00:07:18.26\00:07:20.41 the common good and so on. 00:07:20.44\00:07:22.02 And so the Citizens United not the Bible-- 00:07:22.05\00:07:24.55 Oh. 00:07:24.58\00:07:25.61 Citizens United case, I think is just another part 00:07:25.64\00:07:30.06 of the dynamic hitting us away from the autonomy and rights 00:07:30.09\00:07:34.91 and conscience of the individual, its corporatism. 00:07:34.94\00:07:36.73 Well, you know, what's interesting 00:07:36.76\00:07:38.80 when you look and I want to bring this back to prophecy here 00:07:38.83\00:07:42.04 'cause that's really our purpose in criticizing 00:07:42.07\00:07:47.45 the global economy and the masters of it 00:07:47.48\00:07:51.91 is to see that the Bible actually has something to say, 00:07:51.94\00:07:55.32 in the last days. 00:07:55.35\00:07:57.87 There is--shall I put it, a counterfeit trinity 00:07:57.90\00:08:01.62 of the political powers, the economic powers 00:08:01.65\00:08:05.59 and the religious powers all embed together 00:08:05.62\00:08:09.09 and it's all gonna come crashing down 00:08:09.12\00:08:11.21 but not before the three together 00:08:11.24\00:08:14.66 unite to restrict liberty of conscience. 00:08:14.69\00:08:17.20 Yeah, read those texts 00:08:17.23\00:08:18.26 that we were looking at them a little early. 00:08:18.29\00:08:19.81 Well-- 00:08:19.84\00:08:20.87 I remember quoting a couple of these texts, 00:08:20.90\00:08:23.74 during the economic collapse of 2008. 00:08:23.77\00:08:27.43 James really talks of, you know, to me, 00:08:27.46\00:08:31.10 this is a forerunner of how, 00:08:31.13\00:08:33.93 we have virtual slave labor and child labor 00:08:33.96\00:08:37.56 producing our goods in South East Asia 00:08:37.59\00:08:40.09 while we want to go to our big buck stores 00:08:40.12\00:08:43.36 which I won't name, call out by name 00:08:43.39\00:08:46.32 but, you know, we want to buy cheap goods. 00:08:46.35\00:08:49.14 "Come now, you rich, weep and howl 00:08:49.17\00:08:51.22 for the miseries that are coming upon you. 00:08:51.32\00:08:53.92 Your riches have rotted, and your garments are moth-eaten. 00:08:53.95\00:08:57.63 Your gold and silver have corroded 00:08:57.66\00:08:59.72 and their corrosion will be evidence against you, 00:08:59.75\00:09:02.47 and will eat your flesh like fire. 00:09:02.50\00:09:05.17 You have laid up treasure in the last days." 00:09:05.20\00:09:08.70 So James clearly is-- this is end time, 00:09:08.73\00:09:11.94 "You've laid up treasure in the last days. 00:09:11.97\00:09:14.74 Behold the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, 00:09:14.77\00:09:18.74 which you kept back by fraud are crying out against you." 00:09:18.77\00:09:24.90 Capital has been very oppressive of labor. 00:09:24.93\00:09:28.41 We are destroying the middle class. 00:09:28.44\00:09:30.63 "And the cries of the harvesters 00:09:30.66\00:09:32.36 have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 00:09:32.39\00:09:35.57 You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self indulgence. 00:09:35.60\00:09:39.88 You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter." 00:09:39.91\00:09:45.48 And James goes on again in the last days context, 00:09:45.51\00:09:48.99 "Be patient, therefore, brothers, 00:09:49.02\00:09:50.98 until the coming of the Lord." 00:09:51.01\00:09:53.15 Yeah. But so-- So that's one. 00:09:53.18\00:09:56.53 Economic inequality is a characteristic of our end time. 00:09:56.56\00:09:59.46 Oh, and we have the worst inequality of all that-- 00:09:59.49\00:10:02.14 There was the propellant incident, 00:10:02.17\00:10:03.69 this--wasn't it in Pakistan this no, in Bangladesh 00:10:03.72\00:10:08.04 this building collapsed 00:10:08.07\00:10:10.13 killing hundreds of these marginal workers. 00:10:10.16\00:10:12.77 And I can remember my wife is from Guatemala 00:10:12.80\00:10:16.19 going to a upscale shirt factory 00:10:16.22\00:10:19.01 there was a Yves Saint Laurent I think. 00:10:19.04\00:10:22.22 You know how much they pay 00:10:22.25\00:10:23.47 the owner of the factory to assemble a shirt? 00:10:23.50\00:10:26.11 Nothing. 35 cents a shirt. 00:10:26.14\00:10:28.68 Yeah, no. And he is doing well. 00:10:28.71\00:10:31.54 The facts are that the workers there are getting nothing. 00:10:31.57\00:10:34.23 Yeah, no, it's outrageous. 00:10:34.26\00:10:37.66 Revelation 18, 00:10:37.69\00:10:39.34 "The merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, 00:10:39.37\00:10:42.95 since no one buys their cargo anymore." 00:10:42.98\00:10:46.10 And there's a--it goes on for verses about the collapse. 00:10:46.13\00:10:51.32 And they lamented in one hour. 00:10:51.35\00:10:52.83 This great-- One hour-- 00:10:52.86\00:10:54.14 Economic, edifice collapses. 00:10:54.17\00:10:56.43 Right. Babylon comes crashing down. 00:10:56.46\00:10:59.59 And it is for God, I think Babylon stands 00:10:59.62\00:11:01.78 for just the confusion of man's voice, 00:11:01.81\00:11:03.92 all of these false systems. 00:11:03.95\00:11:05.54 Well, we--but we have a three folded counterfeit trinity 00:11:05.57\00:11:08.71 the religious powers, the civil powers, 00:11:08.74\00:11:12.54 and the economic powers, all in this confused global order 00:11:12.57\00:11:17.85 if you will and very oppressive of the rights of individuals 00:11:17.88\00:11:22.60 and especially the rights of conscience 00:11:22.63\00:11:24.64 and religious freedom. 00:11:24.67\00:11:25.70 Yeah, what can Christians do about this? 00:11:25.73\00:11:28.60 I often had people when I explain religious liberty, 00:11:28.63\00:11:31.50 "What can we do about it?" 00:11:31.53\00:11:34.04 Probably not much, right? 00:11:34.07\00:11:35.38 But we certainly not called upon to be social revolutionaries 00:11:35.41\00:11:39.50 in the sense of taking up any sort of a vendetta 00:11:39.53\00:11:44.09 against authority and the system 00:11:44.12\00:11:47.06 but I think we do have a loud prophetic voice 00:11:47.09\00:11:50.04 and that we shouldn't suffer these things quietly, 00:11:50.07\00:11:52.79 we should speak true principles 00:11:52.82\00:11:55.97 against this developing construct. 00:11:56.00\00:11:58.22 Let me first of all say what we should not do. 00:11:58.25\00:12:01.47 We should not have an attitude of passivity and inevitability. 00:12:01.50\00:12:06.69 Oh, well, you know, the world's going to 00:12:06.72\00:12:10.04 hell in a hand basket there's nothing I can do about it 00:12:10.07\00:12:12.65 and not to vote and just to disengage. 00:12:12.68\00:12:16.63 We, you know, yes, the old saying goes, 00:12:16.66\00:12:20.20 you know, "Think global and act local." 00:12:20.23\00:12:23.16 So for starters we do need to pay attention 00:12:23.19\00:12:27.34 to what goes on in our own communities, 00:12:27.37\00:12:29.61 we need to participate, we need to provide leadership. 00:12:29.64\00:12:33.55 Revelation says, you know, God says, 00:12:33.58\00:12:36.43 I will destroy those who destroy the earth. 00:12:36.46\00:12:38.81 We need to examine our own lifestyles 00:12:38.84\00:12:42.22 and take baby steps maybe concrete 00:12:42.25\00:12:46.59 to have a less of an impact 00:12:46.62\00:12:49.21 on the economy, on the environment. 00:12:49.24\00:12:52.08 Don't you agree the baby steps are not, 00:12:52.11\00:12:53.91 because they will change the world 00:12:53.94\00:12:55.76 but the baby steps should be 00:12:55.79\00:12:56.89 because, we babies following Christ. 00:12:56.92\00:12:59.07 Well-- 00:12:59.10\00:13:00.13 We're called to follow and exemplify 00:13:00.16\00:13:04.28 Christian and Biblical principles 00:13:04.31\00:13:06.97 and it's really up to God 00:13:07.00\00:13:08.56 is to whether that will change the world or not 00:13:08.59\00:13:10.33 but we have to be changed, we have to act correctly. 00:13:10.36\00:13:12.81 We need to live thoughtful moral lives and to lead by example. 00:13:12.84\00:13:16.80 We can't just stop that. 00:13:16.83\00:13:17.86 I remember even I was a Seventh-day Adventist 00:13:17.89\00:13:20.39 leader in Australia 00:13:20.42\00:13:21.64 one of the publishing houses I worked there. 00:13:21.67\00:13:23.96 And his view was--we'll so gonna get on and achieve, 00:13:23.99\00:13:26.19 so I'm gonna irresponsibly borrow heavily here 00:13:26.22\00:13:28.55 because I'll never have to pay it back. 00:13:28.58\00:13:30.84 Back in the Reagan Era we had an energy interior secretary 00:13:30.87\00:13:36.53 by the name of James Watt who was an evangelic 00:13:36.56\00:13:39.87 I think he was a Pentecostal. 00:13:39.90\00:13:41.68 And-- I remember him. 00:13:41.71\00:13:43.11 And he was, he wanted to drill excessively 00:13:43.14\00:13:47.41 for oil off the coast of California 00:13:47.44\00:13:50.03 and to the environmental concerns he said, 00:13:50.06\00:13:52.96 you know, Jesus is coming soon, it doesn't matter. 00:13:52.99\00:13:55.50 Well, we're laughing about it but in another context 00:13:55.53\00:13:57.64 that's more than just a personal mistake. 00:13:57.67\00:14:00.48 That's part of the philosophy of the Devin Nunes. 00:14:00.51\00:14:03.95 It's a God given right to plunder the earth 00:14:03.98\00:14:06.59 because it's for ours to take. 00:14:06.62\00:14:09.45 But we are called to be stewards. 00:14:09.48\00:14:11.56 Right, it's different than stewardship rather. 00:14:11.59\00:14:16.25 The--you know, demonist is a control, 00:14:16.28\00:14:19.99 well, we are not given control, we're given custody, 00:14:20.02\00:14:22.80 is a difference. 00:14:22.83\00:14:24.98 We could continue but I think it's time for a break. 00:14:25.01\00:14:27.47 So we'll be back in a few minutes. 00:14:27.50\00:14:29.76 Please stay with us. 00:14:29.79\00:14:30.90
