Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:23.47\00:00:25.51 This is the program bringing you news, 00:00:25.54\00:00:27.56 views, discussion, analysis 00:00:27.59\00:00:29.73 and up-to-date information on religious liberty events 00:00:29.76\00:00:32.41 in the United States and around the world. 00:00:32.44\00:00:34.75 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine. 00:00:34.78\00:00:38.09 And my guest on the program is Attorney Allen Reinach, 00:00:38.12\00:00:40.81 Executive Director of the-- 00:00:40.84\00:00:44.04 -Church State Council. -Church State Council. 00:00:44.07\00:00:45.65 I was hesitating, but-- 00:00:45.68\00:00:46.83 Celebrating our 50th anniversary next year. 00:00:46.86\00:00:49.91 I do remember the anniversary discussions. 00:00:49.94\00:00:51.56 So as with Liberty Magazine, Liberty which I edit 00:00:51.59\00:00:54.70 it's been published continuously now since 1906. 00:00:54.73\00:00:58.59 Okay. 00:00:58.62\00:00:59.65 A lot older than I am and you. 00:00:59.68\00:01:03.98 On one level continuity and history is great, 00:01:04.01\00:01:06.75 but the sad fact is that we are living in such rapid change 00:01:06.78\00:01:11.04 that something that existed a decade or so ago is passe 00:01:11.07\00:01:15.47 and something we have today may have any viewers, 9/11, 00:01:15.50\00:01:19.25 the world has changed since 9/11. 00:01:19.28\00:01:20.90 I remember reading in-- 00:01:20.93\00:01:23.80 well, I read a quote from LaMonte magazine, 00:01:23.83\00:01:26.58 the French news magazine, 00:01:26.61\00:01:31.85 I remember reading right after 9/11, 00:01:31.88\00:01:33.65 this statement: it said we have reached the point, it said, 00:01:33.68\00:01:37.28 where the very idea of freedom relatively new 00:01:37.31\00:01:42.09 is in the process of disappearing 00:01:42.12\00:01:44.50 and being replaced by its polar opposite, 00:01:44.53\00:01:47.37 that of a global terror of security. 00:01:47.40\00:01:51.46 -A terror of security. -Yeah. 00:01:51.49\00:01:53.59 Well, in my view we lost the war on terrorism 00:01:53.62\00:01:58.70 the minute we responded to 9/11 00:01:58.73\00:02:01.25 and called it a war on terrorism because 00:02:01.28\00:02:04.54 the whole point of the attack was not simply a destruction 00:02:04.57\00:02:08.83 of physical property or even a destruction of lives, 00:02:08.86\00:02:12.45 it was to alter the structure of society which we have done. 00:02:12.48\00:02:17.90 We have caved in. 00:02:17.93\00:02:19.66 We no longer put freedom as the first priority. 00:02:19.69\00:02:23.62 Security, the national security state now trumps freedom. 00:02:23.65\00:02:29.23 Yeah. I mean, in many ways and it's very unfortunate. 00:02:29.26\00:02:32.48 One example that I've often given talking to groups 00:02:32.51\00:02:35.00 about this is from World War II. 00:02:35.03\00:02:38.31 I wasn't born then, but I've read much about it 00:02:38.34\00:02:41.35 and seen many videos of-- 00:02:41.38\00:02:42.64 Your kids don't think you were born then? 00:02:42.67\00:02:45.65 My kids are quite convinced that I was a contemporary of Moses. 00:02:45.68\00:02:49.85 Dinosaur, yeah. 00:02:49.88\00:02:50.94 We are dinosaurs in the eyes of a 12-year-old or thereabouts. 00:02:50.97\00:02:55.16 A teenager. 00:02:55.19\00:02:56.22 Yeah. But, you know, 00:02:56.25\00:02:57.81 there's plenty of visual evidence 00:02:57.84\00:02:59.70 still with us from World War II 00:02:59.73\00:03:02.11 and Germany-- not Germany, 00:03:02.14\00:03:03.98 but Britain under the German blitz, 00:03:04.01\00:03:07.57 you know, for several, 00:03:07.60\00:03:09.52 I think it was nearly 2 months, 00:03:09.55\00:03:10.87 but suddenly weeks on end the entire German air force, 00:03:10.90\00:03:14.45 bombers, fighters and the lot came over, 00:03:14.48\00:03:17.03 a little Channel, 26 miles I think, the English Channel. 00:03:17.06\00:03:19.75 They came across the Channel and they bombed 00:03:19.78\00:03:21.46 the heck out of London. 00:03:21.49\00:03:24.08 It was massive destruction. 00:03:24.11\00:03:25.42 Then Hitler sent the vengeance weapons, 00:03:25.45\00:03:28.45 the buzz bomb, 00:03:28.48\00:03:31.01 a post jet powered guided missile 00:03:31.04\00:03:33.49 and then the V-2s that Iraq still uses. 00:03:33.52\00:03:36.83 You know, the scant is a V-2. 00:03:36.86\00:03:38.63 They were relatively modern weapons raining down on London. 00:03:38.66\00:03:42.36 I've never read anywhere, never heard anything, 00:03:42.39\00:03:45.10 there is nothing in the records that says England's 00:03:45.13\00:03:47.31 or even London's viability was ever threatened. 00:03:47.34\00:03:51.13 And here two buildings, three, 00:03:51.16\00:03:52.95 let's give the benefit of the third one 00:03:52.98\00:03:54.48 that was taken down, world trade center three. 00:03:54.51\00:03:58.26 Three buildings go down in one of our many cities 00:03:58.29\00:04:01.79 and it's like our existence is on the line. 00:04:01.82\00:04:05.40 Not to denigrate, you know, 00:04:05.43\00:04:07.25 the tens of thousands of people that died. 00:04:07.28\00:04:09.98 I'm sorry, that's not even tens, 3,000 people. 00:04:10.01\00:04:11.76 Three thousand people. 00:04:11.79\00:04:13.11 But as far as threatening our way of life 00:04:13.14\00:04:15.65 as the President said, it didn't even come close. 00:04:15.68\00:04:17.89 The politicians know that 00:04:17.92\00:04:20.07 the most power weapon in their arsenal is fear. 00:04:20.10\00:04:25.30 The politics of fear 00:04:25.33\00:04:27.49 is one of the most destructive elements 00:04:27.52\00:04:30.00 in our nation today. 00:04:30.03\00:04:34.26 The thing, if anybody cares about freedom, 00:04:34.29\00:04:37.52 the first thing that they should do is 00:04:37.55\00:04:39.92 resist the politics of fear, 00:04:39.95\00:04:42.61 call it out for what it is and oppose it because 00:04:42.64\00:04:46.72 it's fear that has completely destroyed, 00:04:46.75\00:04:49.81 almost completely destroyed our freedom. 00:04:49.84\00:04:51.94 It's true. 00:04:51.97\00:04:53.19 And then President Bush is as culpable as any, 00:04:53.22\00:04:58.03 but ironically, at the same time 00:04:58.06\00:05:00.13 he said some things that support what you say. 00:05:00.16\00:05:02.92 Go back about your shopping, do business as usual. 00:05:02.95\00:05:05.07 We should have clung to normality. 00:05:05.10\00:05:07.88 And legally to the protections that have seen the United States 00:05:07.91\00:05:11.95 through centuries of relative security 00:05:11.98\00:05:16.61 and protection of the rights of individuals. 00:05:16.64\00:05:18.82 Well, now through the revelations of Edward Snowden 00:05:18.85\00:05:22.54 and the media that have picked up some of our documents 00:05:22.57\00:05:27.19 that he has on unearthed-- 00:05:27.22\00:05:30.23 We don't need to make a judgment about 00:05:30.26\00:05:33.10 whether he personally did the right thing. About him. 00:05:33.13\00:05:34.53 It's not about him. 00:05:34.56\00:05:35.59 But the information that came out is very real. 00:05:35.62\00:05:37.04 Well, but this is stuff that we have long suspected. 00:05:37.07\00:05:41.32 And, you know, I was trying look at 00:05:41.35\00:05:44.51 what's really the bottom line of all of this. 00:05:44.54\00:05:46.63 The bottom line is 00:05:46.66\00:05:48.60 you are only free as long as you don't matter, 00:05:48.63\00:05:51.52 because as soon as you matter to somebody, 00:05:51.55\00:05:54.54 everything you do and say is being scrutinized. 00:05:54.57\00:05:58.06 And there is no hiding from the cameras that are everywhere. 00:05:58.09\00:06:03.14 You know, they can listen, 00:06:03.17\00:06:04.20 you have a cell phone in your pocket, 00:06:04.23\00:06:05.75 it doesn't matter if it's on or off, 00:06:05.78\00:06:07.53 they can listen to your conversation. 00:06:07.56\00:06:09.16 Your car has an inbuilt GPS. 00:06:09.19\00:06:11.32 Not the GPS on the dash. 00:06:11.35\00:06:13.25 But it's in there, your cell phone. 00:06:13.28\00:06:16.12 The satellites overhead can scan you. 00:06:16.15\00:06:18.68 And I spoke to a government computer expert recently 00:06:18.71\00:06:23.07 and he pointed out that there is 00:06:23.10\00:06:24.47 a type of side reading radar 00:06:24.50\00:06:26.02 that can actually see inside of your house. 00:06:26.05\00:06:28.19 I mean, there literally is no escape. 00:06:28.22\00:06:30.56 Now these things are not in themselves, 00:06:30.59\00:06:32.31 I keep maintaining pernicious 00:06:32.34\00:06:34.28 technology is providing these tools, 00:06:34.31\00:06:36.53 but for any government or any system to readily 00:06:36.56\00:06:40.85 then sort of put these into use is quite startling. 00:06:40.88\00:06:44.59 Look, in prophetic terms we talk about the United States 00:06:44.62\00:06:49.76 being founded as a republic, as a Protestant 00:06:49.79\00:06:52.72 and Republican nation and eventually repudiating 00:06:52.75\00:06:56.92 every principle of our constitution. 00:06:56.95\00:06:59.33 And sovereignty in this nation, 00:06:59.36\00:07:02.56 at least in theory, drives from the people, not the state, 00:07:02.59\00:07:08.08 but we have turned this whole thing inside out. 00:07:08.11\00:07:10.66 As soon as we have a national security state, 00:07:10.69\00:07:13.70 a national security apparatus 00:07:13.73\00:07:15.80 and we have our huge sector of our foreign policy 00:07:15.83\00:07:21.28 and our public policy being decided in secret, 00:07:21.31\00:07:25.32 we no longer have a republic, 00:07:25.35\00:07:27.87 we no longer have a government 00:07:27.90\00:07:29.60 where the people have any semblance of control 00:07:29.63\00:07:32.42 over the way our nation conducts itself. 00:07:32.45\00:07:35.48 I know. You and I read many articles, 00:07:35.51\00:07:39.60 you know, analyzing this 00:07:39.63\00:07:40.94 and they point out very correctly 00:07:40.97\00:07:43.40 that often military operations, 00:07:43.43\00:07:45.62 often relationship between countries are hampered 00:07:45.65\00:07:48.66 when things are all out in the open. 00:07:48.69\00:07:49.95 There's a necessity of, 00:07:49.98\00:07:51.85 you know, a country to keep these secrets. 00:07:51.88\00:07:53.86 Well, that might be true in that realm, 00:07:53.89\00:07:55.85 but as you just pointed out, for a free and open society 00:07:55.88\00:07:58.83 to survive it has to truly be open. 00:07:58.86\00:08:01.14 Once you allow the secrecy 00:08:01.17\00:08:04.47 and what comes with it is non accountability. 00:08:04.50\00:08:07.43 Exactly. 00:08:07.46\00:08:08.68 And so, you know, one article 00:08:08.71\00:08:11.73 we've been reading has to do with the billions, 00:08:11.76\00:08:14.53 hundreds of billions of dollars we've been spending 00:08:14.56\00:08:16.79 on the national security apparatus 00:08:16.82\00:08:18.67 and how much of it's been wasted. 00:08:18.70\00:08:20.39 There is no accountability and contractors are buying, 00:08:20.42\00:08:24.21 you know, influence and making contracts 00:08:24.24\00:08:27.81 worth millions and millions of dollars 00:08:27.84\00:08:29.96 and whether they're delivering anything for their money-- 00:08:29.99\00:08:33.00 Well, this is in one regard we hope it's being wasted. 00:08:33.03\00:08:38.38 But we're all being watched and, 00:08:38.41\00:08:40.90 you know, I saw something recently where, 00:08:40.93\00:08:45.48 you know, an ex-security employee was being interviewed 00:08:45.51\00:08:48.31 and the interviewer made the comment. 00:08:48.34\00:08:50.16 They said, why should I have to worry 00:08:50.19\00:08:52.00 if I'm doing nothing wrong? 00:08:52.03\00:08:53.83 And he said something that resonated with me. 00:08:53.86\00:08:56.59 I suddenly saw it. 00:08:56.62\00:08:57.93 He says, "just remember you are not the one 00:08:57.96\00:09:00.96 that gets to define what is right and wrong." 00:09:00.99\00:09:04.21 So it's all-- we saw this-- 00:09:04.24\00:09:06.78 I'm not making any connection between 00:09:06.81\00:09:08.45 the West or United States in particular and communism, 00:09:08.48\00:09:11.16 but under the communist system 00:09:11.19\00:09:13.18 where there was ongoing surveillance, and I went to, 00:09:13.21\00:09:16.81 I remember in Bulgaria in particular, seeing, 00:09:16.84\00:09:19.31 they were actually uniform, 00:09:19.34\00:09:20.40 but they were called security services. 00:09:20.43\00:09:22.83 They were going on with little black briefcases 00:09:22.86\00:09:26.68 into every home, every business, 00:09:26.71\00:09:28.34 checking every document, updating the records. 00:09:28.37\00:09:32.04 You know, they had that, where you had that, 00:09:32.07\00:09:35.47 they were collecting innocuous information 00:09:35.50\00:09:37.62 but if suddenly the authorities thought that 00:09:37.65\00:09:39.49 person is up to no good, 00:09:39.52\00:09:41.06 almost everything they were doing 00:09:41.09\00:09:42.57 then fits within their matrix of suspicion, 00:09:42.60\00:09:46.08 like taking Patriot Act. 00:09:46.11\00:09:49.05 The Initial Patriot Act 00:09:49.08\00:09:50.44 means they can survey what you take out of a library. 00:09:50.47\00:09:53.04 Well, if they think you are a terrorist, 00:09:53.07\00:09:55.24 they look in the library that you took out 00:09:55.27\00:09:56.83 as many people did after 9/11, 00:09:56.86\00:09:59.16 took out a book on Islam, 00:09:59.19\00:10:00.94 they got a developing interest in radical Islam. 00:10:00.97\00:10:03.74 So the bad construction is put on. 00:10:03.77\00:10:06.35 Freedom is not served by this, nor is security ironically. 00:10:06.38\00:10:10.77 There is an improper assumption, a false assumption 00:10:10.80\00:10:17.58 that we have to trade freedom for security. 00:10:17.61\00:10:21.10 We need to debunk that myth. 00:10:21.13\00:10:24.54 If we don't have freedom then 00:10:24.57\00:10:27.14 what difference does it make about security? 00:10:27.17\00:10:30.35 Security for what? To be conformist, 00:10:30.38\00:10:34.75 you know, clones doing our part in the global economy, 00:10:34.78\00:10:38.50 good little consumers who keep their mouth shut, 00:10:38.53\00:10:41.56 who consume mindless entertainment 00:10:41.59\00:10:43.98 and don't have a thought or a life, 00:10:44.01\00:10:46.55 thought worth thinking or life worth living. 00:10:46.58\00:10:49.84 You know, as soon as you have a thought 00:10:49.87\00:10:53.07 that descends from the global order, 00:10:53.10\00:10:56.73 you are under suspicion. 00:10:56.76\00:10:58.36 It is George Orwell come home to roost. 00:10:58.39\00:11:01.51 Yeah, I think at some point 00:11:01.54\00:11:02.96 I'm gonna have a program on George Orwell. 00:11:02.99\00:11:04.98 Read 1984, read it often, 00:11:05.01\00:11:07.72 read Huxley, read Brave New World. 00:11:07.75\00:11:09.89 We are in a brave new world. 00:11:09.92\00:11:11.43 By the way, I discovered something. 00:11:11.46\00:11:13.16 It's logical, but I never heard of it before, 00:11:13.19\00:11:15.40 but in a number of countries, 00:11:15.43\00:11:16.89 I think Iran in particular, they have banned Animal Farm. 00:11:16.92\00:11:22.02 -But you know why? -Why? 00:11:22.05\00:11:23.60 Because the main characters of pigs. 00:11:23.63\00:11:28.68 Totally missing the real message there. 00:11:28.71\00:11:30.25 Yes, of course. 00:11:30.28\00:11:31.31 Although I don't really remember the pigs 00:11:31.34\00:11:32.93 as being heroic figures of any degree. 00:11:32.96\00:11:35.55 So they're condemned. 00:11:35.58\00:11:37.44 But that's probably the one that the average person 00:11:37.47\00:11:40.10 would be as well off to read Animal Farm 00:11:40.13\00:11:42.59 is often given to the children, 00:11:42.62\00:11:43.89 but it's telling a very much a morality tale 00:11:43.92\00:11:49.17 to warn people of totalitarianism 00:11:49.20\00:11:50.96 and how it comes often under the guise of-- 00:11:50.99\00:11:54.61 well, it says all animals are equal 00:11:54.64\00:11:57.30 but at the end, some animals more equal. 00:11:57.33\00:12:00.73 So some freedoms-- all freedoms are important, 00:12:00.76\00:12:03.30 but perhaps, in the interest of security 00:12:03.33\00:12:07.22 we shuffle that a little bit. 00:12:07.25\00:12:08.94 So I think, you know, in the substance of this 00:12:08.97\00:12:11.52 what Americans are just beginning to realize 00:12:11.55\00:12:15.26 is that the government is gathering 00:12:15.29\00:12:17.76 all of the data on who you are calling, 00:12:17.79\00:12:21.16 what you are saying, all of your emails are being stored up. 00:12:21.19\00:12:26.16 If anybody wants to look at your life, 00:12:26.19\00:12:29.88 they can read your emails, 00:12:29.91\00:12:31.82 they can review your phone records, 00:12:31.85\00:12:33.95 who you've associated with, your comings and goings, 00:12:33.98\00:12:37.63 your shopping history if you don't pay cash, 00:12:37.66\00:12:40.64 anything that you do with credit, 00:12:40.67\00:12:43.09 it's all an open book. 00:12:43.12\00:12:45.46 And again, it doesn't have to be 00:12:45.49\00:12:47.66 anything wrong with what you're doing, 00:12:47.69\00:12:49.05 but that's an intrusion, 00:12:49.08\00:12:50.36 that's a violation of the compact of a free society, 00:12:50.39\00:12:55.32 as long as they have been free societies, right. 00:12:55.35\00:12:57.60 Well, the whole point is to squelch dissent. 00:12:57.63\00:13:01.46 I don't know if it's the point, 00:13:01.49\00:13:03.06 but that becomes the necessary end. 00:13:03.09\00:13:06.27 Look, there's some very good analysis done. 00:13:06.30\00:13:12.75 You know, we've had two, sort of, protest movements 00:13:12.78\00:13:15.52 since the economy took a hit, back in 2008. 00:13:15.55\00:13:18.88 On the conservative side you had the Tea Party movement, 00:13:18.91\00:13:21.92 on the liberal side you had the Occupy Wall Street movement. 00:13:21.95\00:13:25.66 The Occupy Wall Street movement was completely shut down 00:13:25.69\00:13:29.10 by the political establishment 00:13:29.13\00:13:32.26 and that's been very well documented. 00:13:32.29\00:13:34.60 It was closed down at one point, 00:13:34.63\00:13:37.68 and it was closed down by the federal government. 00:13:37.71\00:13:40.26 There was an FBI conference call with literally 00:13:40.29\00:13:44.13 something like 45 city mayors to coordinate 00:13:44.16\00:13:49.99 the shutdown of the Occupy movement. 00:13:50.02\00:13:53.34 Now the point is not whether you agree or disagree with, 00:13:53.37\00:13:56.86 you know, any message that was coming out, 00:13:56.89\00:13:59.16 the point is that we live in a society 00:13:59.19\00:14:02.65 where dissent is supposed to be permitted, 00:14:02.68\00:14:05.69 we're supposed to protect free speech, 00:14:05.72\00:14:07.71 where the government is not supposed 00:14:07.74\00:14:09.76 to be acting to stifle dissent. 00:14:09.79\00:14:12.82 And I've mentioned in this program before 00:14:12.85\00:14:14.32 because it gagged me, 00:14:14.35\00:14:16.17 I just gagged when I heard of this. 00:14:16.20\00:14:19.38 About 10 years ago now, 00:14:19.41\00:14:22.09 it's a great tradition in the United States of free speech 00:14:22.12\00:14:25.59 that when any public official comes along 00:14:25.62\00:14:28.16 you could demonstrate, stick a placard up 00:14:28.19\00:14:30.98 or even if you are so inclined, call it out. 00:14:31.01\00:14:34.44 Different people find it offensive 00:14:34.47\00:14:35.93 and I might find it offensive 00:14:35.96\00:14:36.99 if I was the President coming by, 00:14:37.02\00:14:38.82 but it's a free society. 00:14:38.85\00:14:40.09 But starting about 10 years ago 00:14:40.12\00:14:44.45 free speech zones were established, 00:14:44.48\00:14:48.00 that were walled off areas 00:14:48.03\00:14:49.06 and they were sometimes miles from the location. 00:14:49.09\00:14:51.63 We'll be back after a break to discuss this serious topic 00:14:51.66\00:14:55.97 and then get onto some 00:14:56.00\00:14:57.33 implications for religious freedom. 00:14:57.36\00:14:59.39
