Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:07.77\00:00:10.06 Before the break with guest Allen Reinach, 00:00:10.09\00:00:12.11 we were really getting into a discussion of Williams 00:00:12.14\00:00:13.96 and the Quakers and the whole Road Island 00:00:13.99\00:00:18.07 and the Puritan and-- Road Island was but you know, 00:00:18.10\00:00:22.84 the Puritans in Road Island. Right. 00:00:22.87\00:00:24.09 And I was trying to make a comment about the Quakers. 00:00:24.12\00:00:26.19 We think they-- that they have the image 00:00:26.22\00:00:28.46 of being totally passive and introspective. 00:00:28.49\00:00:30.81 They were the movers and the shakers 00:00:30.84\00:00:33.06 and the revolutionaries, in some ways 00:00:33.09\00:00:34.56 I could almost characterized them as the, as the subversive. 00:00:34.59\00:00:39.76 So the anarchist of their age because they were really 00:00:39.79\00:00:43.44 against formal organized religion. 00:00:43.47\00:00:45.53 Well, you know, how you treat 00:00:45.56\00:00:50.29 those who are the most unacceptable in your midst 00:00:50.32\00:00:54.02 is really the barometer 00:00:54.05\00:00:55.77 of whether you respect the rights of conscience, 00:00:55.80\00:00:58.19 the ones that you disagree within and hate the most. 00:00:58.22\00:01:03.01 But Williams had-- coming back to his ideas, 00:01:03.04\00:01:05.71 he had a very different idea of judgment. 00:01:05.74\00:01:08.47 You know, we've said that the Puritans felt 00:01:08.50\00:01:11.17 that it would be their unfaithfulness 00:01:11.20\00:01:12.86 that would reap them 00:01:12.89\00:01:13.92 the curses in the judgment of God. 00:01:13.95\00:01:17.93 But Williams view of judgment was different. 00:01:17.96\00:01:22.06 So he has this imagery of the church as a garden 00:01:22.09\00:01:26.28 protected by this wall or hedge 00:01:26.31\00:01:29.30 separating the garden of the church 00:01:29.33\00:01:31.47 from the wilderness of the state. 00:01:31.50\00:01:32.54 Now this is the viewpoint that call out Baptist 00:01:32.57\00:01:35.87 through much of the history between 00:01:35.90\00:01:38.25 and it's only relatively 00:01:38.28\00:01:39.72 recently that they have diverged on this. 00:01:39.75\00:01:41.67 Well, so his view was 00:01:41.70\00:01:44.17 that when that wall of separation is breached 00:01:44.20\00:01:48.56 and the wilderness of the state 00:01:48.59\00:01:51.13 is allowed to intrude as a corrupting influence 00:01:51.16\00:01:55.13 upon the garden of the church 00:01:55.16\00:01:57.46 then he mixes his imagery, his metaphors. 00:01:57.49\00:02:01.70 As all good preachers do. 00:02:01.73\00:02:03.22 The church is also symbolized by a candlestick. 00:02:03.25\00:02:06.35 He says that's when God will remove 00:02:06.38\00:02:08.79 the candlestick out of its place. 00:02:08.82\00:02:11.26 So he sees judgment as coming when church and state 00:02:11.29\00:02:16.24 are two closely mingled and associated 00:02:16.27\00:02:19.06 that the state is a corrupting influence on the church. 00:02:19.09\00:02:22.16 And it was that teaching that God him 00:02:22.19\00:02:25.61 booted out of Massachusetts. Now interesting-- 00:02:25.64\00:02:28.35 Now it was meant he was against the government. 00:02:28.38\00:02:30.82 He was threatening the integrity of the governing authority. 00:02:30.85\00:02:34.48 Well, remember Massachusetts 00:02:34.51\00:02:36.52 was in a precarious relationship with England 00:02:36.55\00:02:39.64 that was under Archbishop William Laud 00:02:39.67\00:02:42.52 and was very-- 00:02:42.55\00:02:43.95 Whose very existence precipitated 00:02:43.98\00:02:47.50 the Civil War in England? 00:02:47.53\00:02:49.04 And was persecuting the Puritans there. 00:02:49.07\00:02:52.05 Their whole existence as a civil and political society 00:02:52.08\00:02:55.34 in Massachusetts was very tenuous. 00:02:55.37\00:02:57.82 And so the idea that the government did not have 00:02:57.85\00:03:01.27 any role with respect to religion 00:03:01.30\00:03:04.76 was a very dangerous idea. 00:03:04.79\00:03:08.67 So I understand why the Puritans 00:03:08.70\00:03:10.03 from a practical standpoint were concerned 00:03:10.06\00:03:12.64 about what Williams was teaching. 00:03:12.67\00:03:13.77 Now it's one of my burdens. 00:03:13.80\00:03:14.83 And I need to throw it again because-- 00:03:14.86\00:03:16.64 I'm originally from Australia 00:03:18.99\00:03:20.33 but I studied most of my history here. 00:03:20.36\00:03:22.22 But I brought with me 00:03:22.25\00:03:23.28 already a little Australian English history. 00:03:23.31\00:03:25.35 And most people think history is just linear and it's not-- 00:03:25.38\00:03:29.92 it's linear chronologically but it's dangerous to see-- 00:03:29.95\00:03:32.72 it's been in especially in isolation. 00:03:32.75\00:03:34.55 You know, American history plummets throughout 00:03:34.58\00:03:37.18 the revolutionary war and we got it today. 00:03:37.21\00:03:40.23 There are other things happening at the same time. 00:03:40.26\00:03:43.12 And John Williams-- sorry Roger Williams-- 00:03:43.15\00:03:47.07 I'm thinking of the guitarist. 00:03:47.10\00:03:49.06 Roger Williams episode was happening at the same time 00:03:49.09\00:03:53.48 as that they were huge social and religious issues 00:03:53.51\00:03:56.31 in England that culminated 00:03:56.34\00:03:57.64 and you mentioned Archbishop Laud. 00:03:57.67\00:03:59.38 It was fear by the largely Puritan 00:03:59.41\00:04:02.78 and other non conformers religious community 00:04:02.81\00:04:05.46 that he was bringing in Roman Catholicism 00:04:05.49\00:04:08.22 to newly Protestant England 00:04:08.25\00:04:10.20 that eventually led parliament first to react to the king 00:04:10.23\00:04:13.72 and then the Puritans to enlist in their army 00:04:13.75\00:04:16.43 and there was a full blooded Civil War 00:04:16.46\00:04:19.57 that resulted in the Puritans and their allies 00:04:19.60\00:04:22.70 taking over government directly. 00:04:22.73\00:04:24.60 So what we're talking about-- sorry? 00:04:24.63\00:04:26.71 Regicide. Regicide. 00:04:26.74\00:04:29.49 Regicide, the death of the king. Right. 00:04:29.52\00:04:31.34 They killed the king and I've always said 00:04:31.37\00:04:33.24 that I believe that was a far more cataclysmic 00:04:33.27\00:04:35.93 and earthshaking development for Europe 00:04:35.96\00:04:38.43 than even the French Revolution. 00:04:38.46\00:04:40.16 The president beset in England to kill the Lord's anointed. 00:04:40.19\00:04:43.83 That's what it amounted to. 00:04:43.86\00:04:45.11 So as it came to head in England, 00:04:45.14\00:04:47.75 the same thing was here. 00:04:47.78\00:04:48.82 When you're dealing with Winthrop and the others, 00:04:48.85\00:04:50.70 they weren't just religious leaders, 00:04:50.73\00:04:52.70 they weren't just civil leaders. 00:04:52.73\00:04:54.52 They were proxies for God Himself. 00:04:54.55\00:04:57.50 So to question them, 00:04:57.53\00:04:58.87 you were challenging the whole cosmic order. 00:04:58.90\00:05:02.12 So that's a perfect prelude to where I want to go 00:05:02.15\00:05:04.13 and see the significance of the Puritans 00:05:04.16\00:05:08.41 and this battle with Roger Williams 00:05:08.44\00:05:10.15 to modern American society 00:05:10.18\00:05:12.17 because we're facing the same issues today. 00:05:12.20\00:05:14.75 And we also see it in the Prophecies of Revelation. 00:05:14.79\00:05:18.65 In Revelation 13 and 14 00:05:18.68\00:05:21.45 we have competing concepts of judgment. 00:05:21.48\00:05:27.50 In Revelation 14 Seventh-day Adventist take pride 00:05:27.53\00:05:31.84 in proclaiming the final message of judgment there. 00:05:31.87\00:05:36.99 "Fear God, give glory to Him 00:05:37.02\00:05:39.28 for the hour of His judgment has come 00:05:39.31\00:05:41.53 and worship Him who made heaven and earth, 00:05:41.56\00:05:43.35 the sea and the springs of water. 00:05:43.38\00:05:45.51 So prior to the coming of Christ, 00:05:45.54\00:05:47.85 there is a message of judgment 00:05:47.88\00:05:49.75 to go out that it's time for all to repent, 00:05:49.78\00:05:53.24 to make their lives right with God. 00:05:53.27\00:05:56.31 It's a time of judgment and to prepare their hearts 00:05:56.34\00:06:00.10 to stand before the judgments of pride. 00:06:00.13\00:06:01.36 It says the hour of His judgment 00:06:01.39\00:06:02.60 and we could have a whole program on judgment. 00:06:02.63\00:06:04.98 It doesn't mean the hour of His condemnation is at hand. 00:06:05.01\00:06:08.53 God is gonna set things right. 00:06:08.56\00:06:09.86 He's gonna adjudicate in this situation, this complication. 00:06:09.89\00:06:13.25 He's gonna-- elsewhere it says, 00:06:13.28\00:06:14.73 you know, like a two-way sword you cling between good and evil. 00:06:14.76\00:06:17.84 But in Revelation 13 00:06:17.87\00:06:20.45 there is a counterfeit message of judgment 00:06:20.48\00:06:24.81 where we talked about how-- 00:06:24.84\00:06:28.41 In a previous discussion we talked 00:06:28.44\00:06:31.31 about how worship will be enforced by law. 00:06:31.34\00:06:35.73 And those who do not conform 00:06:35.76\00:06:38.39 are blamed for the judgments of God. 00:06:38.42\00:06:41.07 Because next two angels deal with that. Right. 00:06:41.10\00:06:43.78 It would says, Babylon is fallen 00:06:43.81\00:06:45.97 and Babylon is not just religious, 00:06:46.00\00:06:47.72 it's his whole confused-- Well, in literal Babylon-- 00:06:47.75\00:06:50.48 They were just political system. 00:06:50.51\00:06:51.88 Yeah. Right. 00:06:51.91\00:06:53.24 It is a confused structure 00:06:53.27\00:06:56.10 where the government is in control. 00:06:56.13\00:06:58.14 It's mixing religion and secular agendas 00:06:58.17\00:07:00.51 and then the third angel-- 00:07:00.54\00:07:02.40 there's actual many angels in Revelation 14. 00:07:02.43\00:07:04.02 Sure. 00:07:04.05\00:07:05.08 But we define those-- we settle on those three. 00:07:05.11\00:07:07.95 And the third one, then it warns against joining with this system 00:07:07.98\00:07:13.69 that is imposing this religious conformity. 00:07:13.72\00:07:15.70 Right. 00:07:15.73\00:07:16.76 So the true message of judgment 00:07:16.79\00:07:20.05 in Revelation says, when church and state unite 00:07:20.08\00:07:23.49 and impose worship and punish people 00:07:23.52\00:07:26.20 who don't conform to this popular worship. 00:07:26.23\00:07:30.00 So that's Roger Williams 00:07:30.03\00:07:32.18 when the wall of separation is torn down 00:07:32.21\00:07:35.97 and the wilderness of the state 00:07:36.00\00:07:37.49 is allowed to intrude upon the church, 00:07:37.52\00:07:39.72 then you have the Mark of the Beast 00:07:39.75\00:07:42.01 and you have the Judgments of God, 00:07:42.04\00:07:44.28 but prior to the true message of judgment, 00:07:44.31\00:07:47.90 the counterfeit message 00:07:47.93\00:07:49.54 is if those who don't receive the Mark of the Beast 00:07:49.57\00:07:52.15 or the ones who are blamed for the judgments of God 00:07:52.18\00:07:55.64 and they are the ones who are out of harmony, 00:07:55.67\00:07:58.00 out of step and to be condemned, 00:07:58.03\00:08:00.07 properly condemned and subject to the death penalty. 00:08:00.10\00:08:02.75 And I think you're right about Roger Williams 00:08:02.78\00:08:04.96 that he had an in-time sense 00:08:04.99\00:08:09.93 because that was what was driving it in England. 00:08:09.96\00:08:12.50 They were the Ranters, they were the Levelers, 00:08:12.53\00:08:15.85 they were the Fifth Monarchy Men, 00:08:15.88\00:08:17.17 all of them and I don't have time to get into it, 00:08:17.20\00:08:19.27 but they were studying these prophecies 00:08:19.30\00:08:21.53 and they believed that it was all about to happen. 00:08:21.56\00:08:23.90 And because very... 00:08:23.93\00:08:27.98 I was gonna say Eurocentric 00:08:28.01\00:08:29.22 but it wasn't that, it was Anglocentric 00:08:29.25\00:08:31.40 and of course at the new world they were still Englishmen. 00:08:31.43\00:08:34.17 They believed it was them, 00:08:34.20\00:08:35.44 all concerned, their nation, their system. 00:08:35.47\00:08:38.13 So they were trying to sort it out 00:08:38.16\00:08:39.58 in anticipation of Christ imminent return. 00:08:39.61\00:08:42.41 Well, historian, John Barry 00:08:42.44\00:08:45.44 wrote a book about Roger Williams 00:08:45.47\00:08:47.66 subtitled "The Creation of the American Soul." 00:08:47.69\00:08:50.30 And I think his thesis 00:08:50.33\00:08:52.24 is an effective one that these strains 00:08:52.27\00:08:56.08 of the Puritans versus Roger Williams 00:08:56.11\00:08:59.40 is what has been with us ever since. 00:08:59.43\00:09:01.65 Absolutely. 00:09:01.68\00:09:02.71 And still defines the cultural war battles 00:09:02.74\00:09:05.43 that we face in reality today. 00:09:05.46\00:09:06.49 And in reality it was displaced from England. 00:09:06.52\00:09:08.61 They had the Civil War. 00:09:08.64\00:09:09.91 They set up a religious dictatorship of sorts. 00:09:09.94\00:09:13.49 They settled there but the immigrants, 00:09:13.52\00:09:15.52 the Puritans after it collapsed 00:09:15.55\00:09:16.93 they came here, it is unfinished business. 00:09:16.96\00:09:19.44 Well, from my perspective 00:09:19.47\00:09:21.45 when we look at the modern American political scene 00:09:21.48\00:09:23.98 and we look at the culture wars, 00:09:24.01\00:09:25.59 both the left and the right are really neo-Puritans 00:09:25.62\00:09:30.45 because both of them have 00:09:30.48\00:09:32.45 a very distinct moral and religious viewpoint 00:09:32.48\00:09:36.27 that they want to impose upon society. 00:09:36.30\00:09:38.97 You know, the left may emphasize equality, diversity, 00:09:39.00\00:09:42.81 the rights of same sex couples, 00:09:42.84\00:09:45.38 did I say the right, the left has that emphasis. 00:09:45.41\00:09:48.12 The right of course more theocratic perhaps, 00:09:48.15\00:09:52.30 emphasizing traditional, religious and moral values. 00:09:52.33\00:09:55.65 But each side competing 00:09:55.68\00:09:57.75 with their own Puritan agenda as it were 00:09:57.78\00:10:00.63 to impose having church and state collaborate together 00:10:00.66\00:10:05.43 and those who would articulate 00:10:05.46\00:10:08.70 the values of liberty of conscience 00:10:08.73\00:10:11.16 are few and far between. 00:10:11.19\00:10:12.98 In discussing religious freedom in America, 00:10:17.00\00:10:19.12 of course, we need to keep in mind, 00:10:19.15\00:10:21.33 it's antecedence in the old world. 00:10:21.36\00:10:23.51 But even in the new world it was hard one 00:10:23.54\00:10:26.61 and this principle of the separation 00:10:26.64\00:10:28.34 of church and state was not immediately self evident 00:10:28.37\00:10:32.28 to use Thomas Jefferson's term. 00:10:32.31\00:10:34.67 As we look at the Puritans in New England, 00:10:36.06\00:10:38.28 they were not inherently tolerant. 00:10:38.31\00:10:41.20 This was a repressive regime. 00:10:41.23\00:10:44.25 This was a regime that oppressed 00:10:44.28\00:10:47.58 Anne Hutchinson and the Quakers and others. 00:10:47.61\00:10:51.62 But it's worth remembering 00:10:51.65\00:10:53.17 that the conflicts that were fore through there-- 00:10:53.20\00:10:56.52 with Roger Williams and others, 00:10:56.55\00:10:58.48 laid the groundwork for a very clear understanding 00:10:58.51\00:11:01.93 of the separation of church and state 00:11:01.96\00:11:04.07 that informed the constitution 00:11:04.10\00:11:06.00 and has been part of American society 00:11:06.03\00:11:07.94 and its continuing protection of religious freedom ever since. 00:11:07.97\00:11:12.37 We must look at the lessons of history. 00:11:12.40\00:11:14.82 We must look at the instructions from scripture. 00:11:14.85\00:11:18.73 We must look at the model of faithful men and women 00:11:18.76\00:11:21.80 through the ages who stood for religious freedom
