Welcome to the "Liberty Insider." 00:00:23.02\00:00:25.28 This is the program that brings you discussion, 00:00:25.31\00:00:27.48 analysis, news and in-depth reporting on religious liberty 00:00:27.51\00:00:32.93 in the United States and around the world. 00:00:32.96\00:00:35.20 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine 00:00:35.23\00:00:38.47 and my guest is Attorney Allen Reinach, 00:00:38.50\00:00:43.00 Executive Director of the Church State Council. 00:00:43.03\00:00:46.06 Glad to be with you, Lincoln. 00:00:46.09\00:00:47.34 I titled this program "Two Horns." 00:00:47.37\00:00:49.74 Yes, indeed. 00:00:49.77\00:00:51.17 Now, we are on the horns of a dilemma as a nation 00:00:51.20\00:00:55.10 internationally, as we record this program 00:00:55.13\00:00:58.15 the president of the United States 00:00:58.18\00:01:00.08 as he had already drawn a line in the sand on Syria 00:01:00.11\00:01:03.89 and someone stepped across it 00:01:03.92\00:01:05.44 and it look like something is going to happen. 00:01:05.47\00:01:07.66 As that looms I know many people in the United States, 00:01:07.69\00:01:11.57 many Christians are thinking prophecy. 00:01:11.60\00:01:14.20 The whole Middle East is so highly charged 00:01:14.23\00:01:17.53 and many evangelical Christians see prophetic significance 00:01:17.56\00:01:22.32 in the existence of Israel 00:01:22.35\00:01:23.86 and now necessity to support Israel. 00:01:23.89\00:01:27.55 What I think many of them miss 00:01:27.58\00:01:29.48 and you and I need to talk about this is well 00:01:29.51\00:01:31.65 they see American exceptionalism and God's favor on it. 00:01:31.68\00:01:35.22 They don't so easily see the role 00:01:35.25\00:01:37.24 of the United States itself in prophecy. 00:01:37.27\00:01:40.24 The Bible has a lot to say 00:01:40.27\00:01:41.77 about the United States doesn't it? 00:01:41.80\00:01:43.21 Once you accept the bit 00:01:43.24\00:01:46.96 particular based fitting this nation. 00:01:46.99\00:01:48.95 We as Seventh-day Adventists have uniquely I think 00:01:48.98\00:01:51.73 identified the second beast of Revelation 13 00:01:51.76\00:01:56.14 as the United States. 00:01:56.17\00:01:57.67 And there's a lot of good biblical reasons for that 00:01:57.70\00:02:00.90 which I don't think we have time to focus on this program. 00:02:00.93\00:02:04.13 Now there are many beasts in Daniel and Revelation. 00:02:04.16\00:02:07.18 But final--the final power, you know, this is the passage 00:02:07.21\00:02:11.25 it's this beast that brings the world 00:02:11.28\00:02:14.27 the infamous mark of the beast and 666 00:02:14.30\00:02:17.37 and a final round of persecution. 00:02:17.40\00:02:19.47 But there are things about the character of this nation 00:02:19.50\00:02:24.12 that are identified in this prophecy 00:02:24.15\00:02:26.39 and even I think most Seventh-day Adventists 00:02:26.42\00:02:28.36 who recognize America in prophecy here 00:02:28.39\00:02:31.84 fail to really consider the significance 00:02:31.87\00:02:35.43 of how its described in the passage. 00:02:35.46\00:02:38.01 Before you go into that significance 00:02:38.04\00:02:40.24 but let's revisit the beast 00:02:40.27\00:02:42.31 because people that are not particularly well, 00:02:42.34\00:02:45.79 literate is one word I could use them 00:02:45.82\00:02:47.35 Bible things but nor interested. 00:02:47.38\00:02:49.08 Who haven't studied the prophecies. 00:02:49.11\00:02:50.52 Yep, might not realize the, you know, 00:02:50.55\00:02:53.01 the link we make as Daniel 2 where there was an image 00:02:53.04\00:02:56.50 given in a dream to Nebuchadnezzar 00:02:56.53\00:02:58.57 divided by metals in that case not beasts 00:02:58.60\00:03:02.10 and Daniel was then told 00:03:02.13\00:03:04.41 what those kingdoms were. 00:03:04.44\00:03:06.23 And the kingdoms were then centralized 00:03:06.26\00:03:08.48 by beasts in other prophecies. 00:03:08.51\00:03:11.42 Then elsewhere he gives the succession of beasts 00:03:11.45\00:03:14.18 and their interpretation is essentially given. 00:03:14.21\00:03:17.23 Babylon, Greece, Persia, Greece, Rome, 00:03:17.26\00:03:20.96 all symbolized by ferocious beasts of different kinds. 00:03:20.99\00:03:24.64 Lion, bear-- 00:03:24.67\00:03:25.92 It's not a false interpretation to assign kingdoms to beasts. 00:03:25.95\00:03:29.18 Correct. 00:03:29.21\00:03:30.24 Then at the end of all of that sequence, 00:03:30.27\00:03:32.45 where presenter says another beast 00:03:32.48\00:03:34.85 remember rises out of the--of the land 00:03:34.88\00:03:39.99 which ironically is to be easily linked 00:03:40.02\00:03:44.20 to an un-people there because the sea is out of people. 00:03:44.23\00:03:46.70 Sea is a symbol for people. Sea is a symbol of peoples. 00:03:46.73\00:03:48.50 So, it talks of that-- about this beast 00:03:48.53\00:03:50.71 this two horned beast 00:03:50.74\00:03:51.84 a lamb like or a initially peaceful beast 00:03:51.87\00:03:55.09 that then becomes aggressive and it's relatively easy 00:03:55.12\00:03:58.77 in the sequence 'cause you know, one kingdom follows another 00:03:58.80\00:04:01.99 to see that this is the timeframe 00:04:02.02\00:04:04.44 for the rise of the United States 00:04:04.47\00:04:06.18 and then once you see that 00:04:06.21\00:04:07.91 It's very nature's describe very plainly in this prophecy. 00:04:07.94\00:04:11.21 So it's hardly it's not that everyone would 00:04:11.24\00:04:14.27 necessarily agree with us but it's hardly a stretch 00:04:14.30\00:04:17.60 to apply this beast to the United States. 00:04:17.63\00:04:20.80 Fair enough, but the thing I disagree with is the sequence 00:04:20.83\00:04:26.22 that the lamb describes are founding 00:04:26.25\00:04:29.92 Christ like peaceful, meek, mild etcetera., 00:04:29.95\00:04:33.31 protective of our rights 00:04:33.34\00:04:35.24 and the dragon describes something future. 00:04:35.27\00:04:38.22 The text of the passage and I have opened to it. 00:04:38.25\00:04:43.27 Then I saw, Revelation 13:11, 00:04:43.30\00:04:46.03 "Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. 00:04:46.06\00:04:49.61 It had two horns like a lamb," 00:04:49.64\00:04:51.82 so that's in the past tense "and it spoke like a dragon." 00:04:51.85\00:04:55.76 Now the theologians tell me 00:04:55.79\00:04:57.39 that is a type of a perfect tense 00:04:57.42\00:05:00.14 that describes action that was not completed in the past. 00:05:00.17\00:05:03.88 It begun in the past 00:05:03.91\00:05:05.49 but it's continuing into the present. 00:05:05.52\00:05:08.33 And so what we have is this description is this tension 00:05:08.36\00:05:12.55 which I think if we start to think about it 00:05:12.58\00:05:15.42 in American history we have these wonderful ideals 00:05:15.45\00:05:19.82 of civil and religious freedom 00:05:19.85\00:05:22.02 very fitting description two horns like a lamb. 00:05:22.05\00:05:26.28 In the Bible the horn is a symbol of power. 00:05:26.31\00:05:29.47 And so we have we talked 00:05:29.50\00:05:31.13 about the separation of powers in our last show. 00:05:31.16\00:05:34.52 The separation of powers, 00:05:34.55\00:05:36.15 the protection for civil and religious freedom 00:05:36.18\00:05:38.79 because we protect against power becoming accumulated 00:05:38.82\00:05:43.28 in the tyranny of power. 00:05:43.31\00:05:44.59 Some other observers who tried to see in these two horns 00:05:44.62\00:05:47.61 the separation of church and state. 00:05:47.64\00:05:49.16 That's another part of the protection. 00:05:49.19\00:05:50.90 It's all reasonable analogies to draw. 00:05:50.93\00:05:52.61 Religious freedom, absolutely. 00:05:52.64\00:05:54.77 So it's these and if you think about it those who are familiar 00:05:54.80\00:05:59.58 with prophecy in the prophesies of Daniel Chapter 7 and 8 00:05:59.61\00:06:03.52 the power that dominated the west during the middle ages 00:06:03.55\00:06:07.25 was pictured as a single little horn 00:06:07.28\00:06:10.66 that consolidated civil and religious authority 00:06:10.69\00:06:14.15 and became a persecuting power I think the inquisition. 00:06:14.18\00:06:17.92 Here we have a separation 00:06:17.95\00:06:19.82 between civil and religious authority 00:06:19.85\00:06:22.03 protection for civil and religious freedom, 00:06:22.06\00:06:24.29 we have these marvelous principles of freedom 00:06:24.32\00:06:27.02 that have made the United States 00:06:27.05\00:06:28.71 a beacon of freedom to the world. 00:06:28.74\00:06:30.40 Underlying aggression from the beginning. 00:06:30.43\00:06:32.20 At the same time, can you think of any ethnic group 00:06:32.23\00:06:37.18 that has not been mistreated at some point 00:06:37.21\00:06:41.11 or another beginning with Native Americans 00:06:41.14\00:06:43.86 but there was a terrible Anti-Catholicism 00:06:43.89\00:06:47.44 going back to the early days 00:06:47.47\00:06:49.09 of course we had African slavery, 00:06:49.12\00:06:52.12 so we've had a problem there. 00:06:52.15\00:06:54.42 You know, I'm from-- I'm living in California, 00:06:54.45\00:06:57.31 we imported Chinese labors 00:06:57.34\00:06:58.96 who died by the thousands building the rail roads. 00:06:58.99\00:07:02.29 And we interned 00:07:02.32\00:07:03.57 we interned the Japanese during World War II. 00:07:03.60\00:07:06.58 This is and you're right 00:07:06.61\00:07:08.13 what American exceptionalism blinds people to is that, 00:07:08.16\00:07:12.56 that--this country or no country 00:07:12.59\00:07:15.15 is an exception to human nature 00:07:15.18\00:07:17.04 and human beings have the same tendencies. 00:07:17.07\00:07:19.98 The United States exemplified attitudes 00:07:20.01\00:07:23.69 at the times of its founding and the peoples that came in. 00:07:23.72\00:07:27.22 What I believe is the unique thing 00:07:27.25\00:07:28.84 and it's really the load star of Americanism 00:07:28.87\00:07:32.10 or the American state is the constitution. Right. 00:07:32.13\00:07:35.64 Which of course, was informed by progressive thinkers 00:07:35.67\00:07:37.54 religious and secular at that time 00:07:37.57\00:07:39.40 and so this stands up there as a guiding star 00:07:39.43\00:07:42.64 and we haven't yet blanked it out totally 00:07:42.67\00:07:45.43 but if you look just at the history of the United States 00:07:45.46\00:07:48.63 It's as imperfect as any country. 00:07:48.66\00:07:50.68 It's what we say is the United States 00:07:50.71\00:07:53.38 why should it be the policeman of the world, 00:07:53.41\00:07:54.91 we are a peaceful country, 00:07:54.94\00:07:56.24 this isolationist, this never been true. 00:07:56.27\00:07:58.53 The United States has never 00:07:58.56\00:08:00.02 practically speaking been isolationist. 00:08:00.05\00:08:02.39 It's always been expansionist. 00:08:02.42\00:08:04.12 You know, there are 50 states 00:08:04.15\00:08:05.49 so they spread over half the world. 00:08:05.52\00:08:09.54 You know, that's the nature of empowers 00:08:09.57\00:08:11.35 as it's become a latter day empower 00:08:11.38\00:08:13.50 but it still has this unique 00:08:13.53\00:08:15.45 universal aspect of freedom and rights 00:08:15.48\00:08:18.79 and of course bury within that 00:08:18.82\00:08:20.54 wonderful religious liberty sentiments 00:08:20.57\00:08:22.25 and we need to cling to that. 00:08:22.28\00:08:23.69 Well, and I think one of the key things 00:08:23.72\00:08:27.44 to think about in seeing the tension in our history 00:08:27.47\00:08:31.15 between the lamb and the dragon 00:08:31.18\00:08:32.97 between the wonderful values and principles that we espouse 00:08:33.00\00:08:37.94 and our failure to live up to them 00:08:37.97\00:08:40.83 is this whole concept of American civil religion 00:08:40.86\00:08:44.80 and what you mentioned American exceptionalism, 00:08:44.83\00:08:47.37 we have a blind spot as Americans. 00:08:47.40\00:08:50.89 We tend to have this idea 00:08:50.92\00:08:53.33 that God blesses America that God is on our side. 00:08:53.36\00:08:57.21 Automatically regardless of what we do. 00:08:57.24\00:08:58.84 And then we justify being the world's policeman 00:08:58.87\00:09:03.81 which sometimes becomes being the world's bully. 00:09:03.84\00:09:08.38 You know, projecting our power, 00:09:08.41\00:09:09.99 throwing our weight around internationally 00:09:10.02\00:09:12.45 and we are uncritical about whether that's really essential. 00:09:12.48\00:09:18.97 Now, Congress is going to debate 00:09:19.00\00:09:21.62 whether we should project American power into Syria. 00:09:21.65\00:09:24.97 And I don't have the answer to that question 00:09:25.00\00:09:27.28 but I'm glad that there is at least 00:09:27.31\00:09:28.90 going to be some discussion about it. 00:09:28.93\00:09:30.98 Which is the way it should operate, you know, 00:09:31.01\00:09:32.46 so often we hear about it on the news 00:09:32.49\00:09:34.81 and Congress lament that they had no part in it, 00:09:34.84\00:09:37.33 so the system at least is working. 00:09:37.36\00:09:39.19 but even the system is on some predicates 00:09:39.22\00:09:42.72 as you say from its very founding 00:09:42.75\00:09:46.67 there were some principles embedded in the Untied States 00:09:46.70\00:09:50.00 that can easily be used to be enforcing and dictatorial power 00:09:50.03\00:09:54.18 particularly on religious matters. 00:09:54.21\00:09:56.02 But I want to talk a little more about American exceptionalism 00:09:56.05\00:09:59.39 because I think that-- Some books written on that. 00:09:59.42\00:10:02.32 Of course, look, it's a given that we are exceptional 00:10:02.35\00:10:06.14 in our commitment to the wonderful values 00:10:06.17\00:10:09.51 of civil and religious freedom. 00:10:09.54\00:10:10.75 That's what makes us exceptional. 00:10:10.78\00:10:13.33 We are not exceptional when we fail to live up to them 00:10:13.36\00:10:17.88 but there is an inherent danger 00:10:17.91\00:10:20.74 and that is a danger from our civil religion 00:10:20.77\00:10:26.62 that we turn God into a tribal deity of the United States. 00:10:26.65\00:10:30.76 I like that. 00:10:30.79\00:10:31.82 And what I mean by a tribal deity, 00:10:31.85\00:10:34.36 all true religion whatever you call-- 00:10:34.39\00:10:36.65 Or a national icon. 00:10:36.68\00:10:38.32 All true religion is based on the premise 00:10:38.35\00:10:41.39 that God is sovereign and we as the creatures 00:10:41.42\00:10:45.13 as the created beings are in humble submission 00:10:45.16\00:10:48.65 to the will of the sovereign Creator God. 00:10:48.68\00:10:52.04 You know, there is a hierarchy, God is on top 00:10:52.07\00:10:55.88 and we are--you know, we are on the bottom. 00:10:55.91\00:10:58.76 All right, we are the creatures, He is the Creator. 00:10:58.79\00:11:02.05 Civil religion turns that formula upside down 00:11:02.08\00:11:05.78 and God becomes the instrument of national policy. 00:11:05.81\00:11:11.25 God as the, you know, 00:11:11.28\00:11:12.66 as the tribal deity of the United States 00:11:12.69\00:11:15.60 is invoked--you know politicians invoke His name 00:11:15.63\00:11:19.60 to bless their political aspirations to elected at office 00:11:19.63\00:11:24.98 and also to bless our national aspirations 00:11:25.01\00:11:28.87 as we project power into the global community. 00:11:28.90\00:11:31.98 Well, it's a little example that illustrates where this leads. 00:11:32.01\00:11:35.25 Couple of years ago it turned out that-- 00:11:35.28\00:11:37.43 that all of the gun sites 00:11:37.46\00:11:39.05 used in Afghanistan and Iraq had a Bible text. 00:11:39.08\00:11:42.05 John 3:16 on the Bible. 00:11:42.08\00:11:44.38 Next to the serial number, 00:11:44.41\00:11:45.85 well, it was told to the soldiers 00:11:45.88\00:11:47.46 who found out about it that these were holy weapons. 00:11:47.49\00:11:51.05 In extension of the state is religious thinking 00:11:51.08\00:11:53.84 and this just gets so muddled together. 00:11:53.87\00:11:56.44 But of course the structure you are describing 00:11:56.47\00:11:58.14 really existed in the Middle Ages 00:11:58.17\00:12:00.12 and in some ways that's what perhaps lies ahead of us. 00:12:00.15\00:12:04.13 This merging of church and state but in a more modern, 00:12:04.16\00:12:08.04 Well, I'm trying to avoid some of the words like-- 00:12:11.02\00:12:12.81 like some of these totalitarian powers 00:12:12.84\00:12:16.52 we saw at World War II. 00:12:16.55\00:12:17.62 But really technology is handing 00:12:17.65\00:12:19.89 that sort of statism to any dominant entity today. 00:12:19.92\00:12:23.85 Abraham Lincoln I think had a healthy attitude. 00:12:23.88\00:12:27.14 He was asked-- 00:12:27.17\00:12:28.20 Oh, nobody God didn't favor either. 00:12:28.23\00:12:30.15 He was asked whether God was on the side of the north 00:12:30.18\00:12:34.24 and his answer was you know 00:12:34.27\00:12:36.18 I don't know, I hope that we are on God's side. Yeah. 00:12:36.21\00:12:40.17 Well, elsewhere he said both sides 00:12:40.20\00:12:41.85 pray to God, he couldn't be on both sides. 00:12:41.88\00:12:43.61 Well, that was his second Inaugural Address 00:12:43.64\00:12:45.80 and if there is one thing I would comment 00:12:45.83\00:12:47.61 every American to reread regularly. 00:12:47.64\00:12:50.73 It's Lincoln second inaugural it is just a masterpiece. 00:12:50.76\00:12:54.53 Very humble document. Very humble. 00:12:54.56\00:12:56.56 And he had it absolutely-- 00:12:56.59\00:12:57.62 And biblically and prophetically dead on right. 00:12:57.65\00:13:02.46 Although he was not 00:13:02.49\00:13:03.53 a conventional Christian in any form. 00:13:03.56\00:13:07.67 No. in fact he was well read. 00:13:07.70\00:13:08.73 And I think he had his moral compass well sort out. 00:13:08.76\00:13:12.18 So the two horns-- 00:13:12.21\00:13:14.27 what this the latter activity of this entity do though. 00:13:14.30\00:13:19.24 Okay, so it says that we have these two horns 00:13:19.27\00:13:23.59 but then it says that it will exercise 00:13:23.62\00:13:26.53 or it exercises all the authority 00:13:26.56\00:13:29.18 of the first beast in its presence 00:13:29.21\00:13:32.53 and when it does that it says it makes the earth 00:13:32.56\00:13:36.28 and its inhabitance worship the first beast 00:13:36.31\00:13:41.38 whose mortal wound was healed. 00:13:41.41\00:13:43.87 So the time is coming when in repudiation 00:13:43.90\00:13:47.48 of the principles of the civil and religious freedom, 00:13:47.51\00:13:51.30 the two horns become one. 00:13:51.33\00:13:53.18 We exercise both civil and religious authority 00:13:53.21\00:13:56.46 and we enforce religious obligations. 00:13:56.49\00:14:00.51 We enforce worship, 00:14:00.54\00:14:03.39 that's the whole mark of the beast 00:14:03.42\00:14:05.23 I have the word worship underlined 00:14:05.26\00:14:07.42 repeatedly in this passage. 00:14:07.45\00:14:09.36 Those who would not worship 00:14:09.39\00:14:11.25 the image of the beast are to be slain. 00:14:11.28\00:14:14.10 So there is persecution and death penalty 00:14:14.13\00:14:17.52 for those who do not conform to the popular worship. 00:14:17.55\00:14:23.29 We need to take a break, we'll be right back 00:14:23.32\00:14:25.90 to continue this discussion of the two horn beast. 00:14:25.93\00:14:29.05
