Welcome back to the "Liberty Insider." 00:00:07.50\00:00:09.25 Before the break with guest Grace Mackintosh 00:00:09.28\00:00:11.63 we were talking about education and how in Canada initially 00:00:11.66\00:00:16.70 and then well generally how often education 00:00:16.73\00:00:19.02 initiatives have an agenda. 00:00:19.05\00:00:21.61 And much of it lately seems to center 00:00:21.64\00:00:24.37 on casting religion as problematic, 00:00:24.40\00:00:26.61 certainly extremist, fundamentalist, 00:00:26.64\00:00:31.01 narrow religious viewpoints as dangerous 00:00:31.04\00:00:33.77 to the public good, right? Exactly. 00:00:33.80\00:00:37.52 And how can we counteract them 00:00:37.55\00:00:39.02 because that's not true education? It's not true. 00:00:39.05\00:00:43.37 That shouldn't be the role of the state 00:00:43.40\00:00:46.27 which should be to work to further harmony in society 00:00:46.30\00:00:51.16 to fit people to live peaceably and profitably in society 00:00:51.19\00:00:54.94 to increase a narrow viewpoint of one segmental society. 00:00:54.97\00:00:58.86 That's just irresponsible it seems to me. 00:00:58.89\00:01:01.33 And it brings two things to mind. 00:01:01.36\00:01:02.98 One that we have to do whatever 00:01:03.01\00:01:04.43 we can to protect Christian education 00:01:04.46\00:01:06.79 because the true signs of education is to connect 00:01:06.82\00:01:10.01 the student to Jesus Christ. 00:01:10.04\00:01:12.08 As a Christian we absolutely and it's a matter of history 00:01:12.11\00:01:17.13 in the western world education began from a church perspective. 00:01:17.16\00:01:21.53 It's only relatively recently 00:01:21.56\00:01:23.36 that the state has taken over education 00:01:23.39\00:01:26.40 and as we started out talking about at sometimes 00:01:26.43\00:01:30.64 that's taken to the point of the state educational system 00:01:30.67\00:01:34.43 sees to children their words 00:01:34.46\00:01:36.60 rather than the words of the parents 00:01:36.63\00:01:38.25 who have lent them to them to teach them social values. 00:01:38.28\00:01:41.67 Yes, I think it was in the 1830s that the state decided 00:01:41.70\00:01:45.43 that they wanted the peace of the education movement. 00:01:45.46\00:01:49.56 And even though there was 90% literacy in regions 00:01:49.59\00:01:55.99 they were forced to implement public schools. 00:01:56.02\00:02:00.60 It's a very interesting history education has. 00:02:00.63\00:02:04.62 Well and pointed at people-- they sort for forget 00:02:04.65\00:02:07.33 this that the state education in any country is seldom written, 00:02:07.36\00:02:12.06 in fact it's never ultraistic. 00:02:12.09\00:02:14.68 It's designed further the aims of the state 00:02:14.71\00:02:20.98 and depending on how the state has structured 00:02:21.01\00:02:23.74 the communist society. Yes. 00:02:23.77\00:02:25.79 It trains young people to live in a communist model 00:02:25.82\00:02:29.41 to exemplify it to further the power of the communist state. 00:02:29.44\00:02:32.79 If it's in a capitalist society it's fitting them 00:02:32.82\00:02:36.05 for capitalist behaviors purposely using that term 00:02:36.08\00:02:40.33 because we think of democracy. Yeah. 00:02:40.36\00:02:42.07 But I don't really think the educational system 00:02:42.10\00:02:46.62 is structured particularly to further democratic aims. 00:02:46.65\00:02:50.05 And evidence say here they're actually setting 00:02:50.08\00:02:54.56 one section of the populist against another. 00:02:54.59\00:02:56.65 So now their aim is a capitalist 00:02:56.68\00:02:59.17 social engineering type of thing. 00:02:59.20\00:03:01.44 And what I think really got modern societies involved in it. 00:03:01.47\00:03:06.33 And it was not their doing but as we moved 00:03:06.36\00:03:08.25 into a more complex industrial society 00:03:08.28\00:03:12.27 with information technologies, very specialized 00:03:12.30\00:03:16.69 production techniques in factories 00:03:16.72\00:03:18.69 it was necessary for society to have very particular education. 00:03:18.72\00:03:21.93 So the state moved in on it. 00:03:21.96\00:03:23.41 That's to defend them but once they go into that 00:03:23.44\00:03:26.27 they're often of doubts with the moral viewpoint 00:03:26.30\00:03:29.60 of the parents who were sending their children there. 00:03:29.63\00:03:32.51 By the middle of the 20th century 00:03:32.54\00:03:34.47 there was a shift in education. 00:03:34.50\00:03:36.86 We had taught reasoning from cause to effect. 00:03:36.89\00:03:39.80 We had taught that the high esteem was to develop character 00:03:39.83\00:03:43.32 and that humanity seeks truces. 00:03:43.35\00:03:47.48 And by the middle of the 20th century there was a shift 00:03:47.51\00:03:51.70 and we used operant conditioning in schools. 00:03:51.73\00:03:55.82 Explain operant conditioning not everyone might know. 00:03:55.85\00:03:58.71 Well, perhaps most of the viewers 00:03:58.74\00:04:00.81 have heard of Pavlov's Dogs. 00:04:00.84\00:04:04.47 Well they might not know it. The dogs-- 00:04:04.50\00:04:06.74 Is he just the dog fancier? 00:04:06.77\00:04:08.46 Not dog fancier. Pavlov was the psychologist Yes. 00:04:08.49\00:04:12.07 And he developed operant conditioning 00:04:12.10\00:04:14.67 which had its roots in well in went. 00:04:14.70\00:04:17.86 He would feed the dogs. 00:04:17.89\00:04:19.33 He would feed the dogs and then he would find that 00:04:19.36\00:04:21.46 after a while he would bring them 00:04:21.49\00:04:23.01 where they would be fed 00:04:23.04\00:04:24.07 and he wouldn't have to give them food-- 00:04:24.10\00:04:25.15 they would salivate. Right. 00:04:25.18\00:04:26.76 And it reacts in a condition. 00:04:26.79\00:04:28.59 They paired the feeding, with a bell ringing. 00:04:28.62\00:04:32.72 So every time the dogs were fed the bell would ring. 00:04:32.75\00:04:36.15 And so it rings the bell and they'll salivate. 00:04:36.18\00:04:37.21 So then you could-- and the dog would salivate 00:04:37.24\00:04:39.57 in anticipation of the food coming and then-- 00:04:39.60\00:04:41.60 And we're all like that and it's obvious, yeah. 00:04:41.63\00:04:43.19 So it is a way of training animals 00:04:43.22\00:04:45.83 because what it does is bypasses the frontal lobe 00:04:45.86\00:04:49.25 or mechanism for reasoning the context within we put-- 00:04:49.28\00:04:53.04 within which we put our morals and information 00:04:53.07\00:04:56.79 and it bypasses and it goes straight to limbic system 00:04:56.82\00:05:00.77 and you're given you know the bell 00:05:00.80\00:05:03.61 and then you have a response. 00:05:03.64\00:05:05.32 So stimulus responds, stimulus responds 00:05:05.35\00:05:08.19 and what happens when you teach within the context 00:05:08.22\00:05:12.53 of operant conditioning is that you do learn the math, 00:05:12.56\00:05:16.32 you do learn to read. 00:05:16.35\00:05:17.72 Its not that it is a bad tool for teaching, 00:05:17.75\00:05:20.97 it's just that you are conditioned 00:05:21.00\00:05:24.28 to respond to stimulus and also you're conditioned 00:05:24.31\00:05:29.40 to move away from punishment. 00:05:29.43\00:05:32.14 All right and so it creates a chilling effect 00:05:32.17\00:05:36.14 with respect to standing up and speaking what you believe. 00:05:36.17\00:05:39.47 You know you're going to stand up 00:05:39.50\00:05:40.61 you're going to speak what you believe. 00:05:40.64\00:05:42.17 There is going to be a negative response 00:05:42.20\00:05:44.02 and all through school you're conditioned 00:05:44.05\00:05:45.88 to move away from punishment. 00:05:45.91\00:05:47.64 And you don't really want-- 00:05:47.67\00:05:49.19 you have people disagreeing with you calling you. 00:05:49.22\00:05:52.02 And certain things will happen and get the same times. 00:05:52.05\00:05:54.08 Society is all went through phase of situational ethics. 00:05:54.11\00:06:00.86 There was the rise of philosophical views 00:06:00.89\00:06:03.55 that were expressed what else it about in 60s, 00:06:03.58\00:06:06.54 God is dead. So operative faith. 00:06:06.57\00:06:11.94 The scopes child. 00:06:11.97\00:06:13.00 It supposed to just belief it was sort at the window 00:06:13.03\00:06:15.92 and it was not the supernatural. 00:06:15.95\00:06:17.19 Yeah, this God I mean you're religious person 00:06:17.22\00:06:19.58 because you believe the holy saints. 00:06:19.61\00:06:21.00 But mystical belief that the changed lives that was not to. 00:06:21.03\00:06:25.24 So become more rationale 00:06:25.27\00:06:26.79 and become more expediency ruled 00:06:26.82\00:06:29.66 and then education is working on the system. 00:06:29.69\00:06:31.96 And the net effect is we morally adrift I think in this society. 00:06:31.99\00:06:36.39 We are--I think there is an agreement 00:06:36.42\00:06:38.31 with that in a concern for that. 00:06:38.34\00:06:40.54 And there is a misguided attempts 00:06:40.57\00:06:43.47 to correct that through legislation 00:06:43.50\00:06:46.90 as supposed to reaching people through ideas and persuasion. 00:06:46.93\00:06:52.24 And so back to religious liberty in the middle of it all, 00:06:52.27\00:06:55.93 people of faith are risked to be maligned 00:06:55.96\00:07:01.02 perhaps even persecuted. 00:07:01.05\00:07:02.61 Excluded from in the education system 00:07:02.64\00:07:05.30 and as you said in another program 00:07:05.33\00:07:08.19 even in homeschooling situations there may be forbidden 00:07:08.22\00:07:10.93 to teach those spiritual values to their children. 00:07:10.96\00:07:13.38 That's very true. 00:07:13.41\00:07:14.63 And in Canada right now we have legislation 00:07:14.66\00:07:17.48 that's been passed from province to province. 00:07:17.51\00:07:19.63 So you have the pilot province who introduces the legislation. 00:07:19.66\00:07:23.18 If it goes well and if there is any bugs 00:07:23.21\00:07:25.70 they work it out and you'll see a pop[] in another province. 00:07:25.73\00:07:29.46 And one of the legislation that passes anti-bullying. 00:07:29.49\00:07:34.22 So we talked about this earlier in the anti-bullying legislation 00:07:34.25\00:07:38.79 you have to promote lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual lives 00:07:38.82\00:07:44.82 or transgendered lifestyle by a clubs. 00:07:44.85\00:07:48.98 You know you have to have clubs you have to show 00:07:49.01\00:07:50.86 that you're a protecting them 00:07:50.89\00:07:52.23 and love for dating and that's sort of thing. 00:07:52.26\00:07:54.39 And I will tell you that at this time 00:07:54.42\00:07:57.79 if as an organization you had a church school 00:07:57.82\00:08:02.02 and you spoke up and said, 00:08:02.05\00:08:05.22 you know we agree there shouldn't bullying 00:08:05.25\00:08:07.92 but in this legislation we're going to have 00:08:07.95\00:08:09.96 to promote something 00:08:09.99\00:08:11.02 that's against the teachings of the church. 00:08:11.05\00:08:12.58 And it wouldn't matter how you said it 00:08:12.61\00:08:14.55 and it wouldn't matter how gently you presented it 00:08:14.58\00:08:17.30 you would immediately be labeled as promoting bullying. 00:08:17.33\00:08:21.31 And there is no way to deal with it on the front-end. 00:08:21.34\00:08:24.94 Because of the chilling effect 00:08:24.97\00:08:26.61 that's been developed and creating. 00:08:26.64\00:08:28.37 Now that's very true. We're running of the time. 00:08:28.40\00:08:30.33 But I just want to [] passing comment for those 00:08:30.36\00:08:33.88 particularly Seventh-day Adventist who are watching 00:08:33.91\00:08:36.00 but other people of faith, different organizations 00:08:36.03\00:08:38.68 that probably have educational institutions 00:08:38.71\00:08:41.90 that the design to inculcate their particular 00:08:41.93\00:08:44.71 take on a faith commitment. 00:08:44.74\00:08:46.75 They may be under increasing illusion 00:08:46.78\00:08:49.12 about that because schools even church run 00:08:49.15\00:08:53.11 that are under regular accreditation programs 00:08:53.14\00:08:59.06 are probably forced through different mechanism 00:08:59.09\00:09:02.04 not at least of which dated 00:09:02.07\00:09:03.85 to adopt this exact same method of education. 00:09:03.88\00:09:06.84 These exact same lines of instruction 00:09:06.87\00:09:10.17 and with the same consequence 00:09:10.20\00:09:11.84 that even within the church school 00:09:11.87\00:09:13.80 a moral court fundamentalist or orthodox religious viewpoint 00:09:13.83\00:09:18.94 can be marginalized as socially dangerous. Absolutely. 00:09:18.97\00:09:22.82 And don't want to illuminate on that too much 00:09:22.85\00:09:25.28 but I know some cases within the Adventist church 00:09:25.31\00:09:27.73 that's happening right now. 00:09:27.76\00:09:29.18 Absolutely and in Canada we have organizations 00:09:29.21\00:09:34.49 that have called out Christian schools 00:09:34.52\00:09:37.07 and tell them that they are in violation 00:09:37.10\00:09:41.32 of the principle of academic freedom. 00:09:41.35\00:09:43.80 Because their teachers are not allowed 00:09:43.83\00:09:45.94 to teach evolution or the homosexuality 00:09:45.97\00:09:50.94 as viable or productive 00:09:50.97\00:09:53.73 and it's a real issue, it's a real threat. 00:09:53.76\00:09:57.66 You might lose funding. 00:09:57.69\00:09:58.80 And should they be academic freedom 00:09:58.83\00:10:00.56 to deny the very church believes 00:10:00.59\00:10:03.73 that established a safe haven 00:10:03.76\00:10:05.89 to teach young people of those families? 00:10:05.92\00:10:08.91 That's right. That's the question. 00:10:08.94\00:10:10.48 When you undermine the curriculum 00:10:10.51\00:10:13.62 and so the state is controlling the material 00:10:13.65\00:10:15.91 with respect to curriculum 00:10:15.94\00:10:17.55 when the state controls and the teachers and professors 00:10:17.58\00:10:21.33 and what they can teach you basically 00:10:21.36\00:10:23.72 lose your identity as a Christian institution. 00:10:23.75\00:10:27.64 One of the most famous speeches of history 00:10:30.72\00:10:33.89 is that made by Socrates in ancient Greece 00:10:33.92\00:10:38.38 after he was condemned to death by drinking hemlock. 00:10:38.41\00:10:42.26 So it was self administered-- condemned to death 00:10:42.29\00:10:45.15 for subverting the young of the nation state. 00:10:45.18\00:10:50.32 The charge was that he was subverting them 00:10:50.35\00:10:53.99 by educating them in wrong principles. 00:10:54.02\00:10:57.78 The state and the indeed people of moral persuasion 00:10:57.81\00:11:01.06 who have gathered around religious identities 00:11:01.09\00:11:04.69 have long known that educating young people 00:11:04.72\00:11:08.03 is the way to change society and it is not be trifled with. 00:11:08.06\00:11:11.92 How unfortunate it is that when we talk about 00:11:11.95\00:11:14.62 religious liberty and religious identity 00:11:14.65\00:11:17.18 that even in progressive modern states like United States, 00:11:17.21\00:11:20.72 Canada and of course, Australia and England and others 00:11:20.75\00:11:24.36 very often the [] thinks that it knows best 00:11:24.39\00:11:27.58 and it is actually inculcating a cynicism 00:11:27.61\00:11:31.32 and a doubt and even an antagonism to religion. 00:11:31.35\00:11:35.39 This is not its place, this is not its place 00:11:35.42\00:11:39.00 and I could wish that such a system 00:11:39.03\00:11:41.45 not people in essence take hemlock 00:11:41.48\00:11:45.10 and become responsible and put to death 00:11:45.13\00:11:48.76 this opposition to true moral behavior. 00:11:48.79\00:11:51.63 For Liberty Insider this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:51.66\00:11:55.22
