Welcome to the "Liberty Insider." 00:00:22.67\00:00:24.91 This is a program that brings you analysis, 00:00:24.94\00:00:27.25 discussion and up to date information 00:00:27.28\00:00:29.06 on religious liberty events 00:00:29.09\00:00:30.96 and developments around the world. 00:00:30.99\00:00:32.78 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine. 00:00:32.81\00:00:36.24 And my guest on the program is Grace Mackintosh. 00:00:36.27\00:00:40.45 Now Grace, for our viewers I should what-- 00:00:40.48\00:00:43.03 you have too many titles 00:00:43.06\00:00:44.09 but the one that is important for this program 00:00:44.12\00:00:46.02 I think is that you are Director of Public Affairs 00:00:46.05\00:00:48.77 and Religious Liberty 00:00:48.80\00:00:49.87 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada. 00:00:49.90\00:00:52.22 Correct. 00:00:52.25\00:00:53.52 I want to talk about education. 00:00:53.55\00:00:56.29 None of us can have too much of that. 00:00:56.32\00:00:59.51 We need to know about this increasingly complex world 00:00:59.54\00:01:03.48 and the popular assumption is the education 00:01:03.51\00:01:06.97 department, schools, universities 00:01:07.00\00:01:09.20 they will teach that to you. 00:01:09.23\00:01:10.67 But I believe more and more 00:01:10.70\00:01:12.54 educational institutions are biased. 00:01:12.57\00:01:16.92 Obviously, you expect a Christian school 00:01:16.95\00:01:19.56 to have a bias toward teaching Christian values. 00:01:19.59\00:01:22.70 But may be a state school 00:01:22.73\00:01:25.64 is more biased than people realize. 00:01:25.67\00:01:29.14 They should think initially the state has schools 00:01:29.17\00:01:32.73 because it wants to inculcate values 00:01:32.76\00:01:34.53 that suit a person to function in the society, the government 00:01:34.56\00:01:39.14 and the governing system as established. 00:01:39.17\00:01:41.18 But I think more and more 00:01:41.21\00:01:42.27 it's even a bit bigger than that. 00:01:42.30\00:01:43.50 There's a social agenda that's different from the norm. 00:01:43.53\00:01:47.11 All right. You find that to be true in Canada? 00:01:47.14\00:01:48.93 I agree that completely. 00:01:48.96\00:01:50.16 I think that education is under siege. 00:01:50.19\00:01:53.15 I think they take advantage of the educational setting 00:01:53.18\00:01:55.95 to teach values and a way of processing, 00:01:55.98\00:02:00.47 a way of problem solving and I see a manifestation 00:02:00.50\00:02:04.77 of our teaching methods for processing, 00:02:04.80\00:02:07.90 for thinking and social issues. 00:02:07.93\00:02:10.89 So can I give an example to you? 00:02:10.92\00:02:13.86 Go ahead. 00:02:13.89\00:02:14.96 One of my--an example that I think is most poignant 00:02:14.99\00:02:18.88 and it is when you teach situational ethics-- 00:02:18.91\00:02:22.39 don't have a problem with situational ethics 00:02:22.42\00:02:24.40 but its become a vehicle to promote 00:02:24.43\00:02:27.08 certain kind of problem solving and it shows up in real life. 00:02:27.11\00:02:31.26 So it's a way of teaching a culture of death. 00:02:31.29\00:02:34.72 So an example is you have heard, of these situations. 00:02:34.75\00:02:42.01 You have a got a shipwreck 00:02:42.04\00:02:44.52 and you have the lifeboat 00:02:44.55\00:02:47.26 and the lifeboat can only take five people 00:02:47.29\00:02:49.66 and you've got seven. 00:02:49.69\00:02:50.74 Right. 00:02:50.77\00:02:52.44 And the students are not required to solve the problem, 00:02:52.47\00:02:57.90 they're only required to do one thing 00:02:57.93\00:03:00.97 and that's chose who dies. 00:03:01.00\00:03:03.14 And what it's really teaching 00:03:03.17\00:03:05.87 its teaching even they know 00:03:05.90\00:03:09.52 when they come to school that to kill is wrong. 00:03:09.55\00:03:11.93 But they're being taught that in certain situations 00:03:11.96\00:03:14.46 especially in emergencies 00:03:14.49\00:03:17.01 or in a crisis people are expendable. 00:03:17.04\00:03:20.19 And it doesn't really matter who you pick 00:03:20.22\00:03:21.89 because they're told it's not right or wrong. 00:03:21.92\00:03:24.38 You can pick the doctor. 00:03:24.41\00:03:25.44 You can pick the pregnant lady. You can pick whatever. 00:03:25.47\00:03:27.51 You're not allowed to have shark repellent. 00:03:27.54\00:03:29.66 You're not allowed to have ropes. 00:03:29.69\00:03:31.24 You can't have a mindset 00:03:31.27\00:03:32.89 that says everybody gets out alive or we go down together. 00:03:32.92\00:03:36.95 And you're processing, 00:03:36.98\00:03:40.41 you're teaching the children to think 00:03:40.44\00:03:42.88 analytically in a very small scope. 00:03:42.91\00:03:45.49 Now you believe this 00:03:45.52\00:03:46.57 is the sort of think that is typically-- 00:03:46.60\00:03:48.20 It's taught in schools. 00:03:48.23\00:03:49.58 You get a car-- you come across 00:03:49.61\00:03:51.43 this a lot at all levels of education 00:03:51.46\00:03:53.52 including pro-secondary. 00:03:53.55\00:03:55.32 And to me the way I see that manifested 00:03:55.35\00:03:59.93 and a social issue is abortion. 00:03:59.96\00:04:02.92 Yeah. Right. 00:04:02.95\00:04:04.26 We've got to crisis. 00:04:04.29\00:04:05.69 There're unwanted babies, right? 00:04:05.72\00:04:08.47 You can't have the mindset 00:04:08.50\00:04:09.81 we want them all to get out alive 00:04:09.84\00:04:11.74 or we want to prevent a pregnancies. 00:04:11.77\00:04:14.47 That is not the mindset. 00:04:14.50\00:04:16.08 The mindset is you decide and the courts decide 00:04:16.11\00:04:20.01 when are they expendable. Yeah. 00:04:20.04\00:04:22.37 And it's really teaching that you know 00:04:22.40\00:04:26.10 there are humans that are expendable 00:04:26.13\00:04:28.38 and it comes at the time of crisis. 00:04:28.41\00:04:30.25 These reality shows are also doing the much the same thing. 00:04:30.28\00:04:32.91 The reality shows are doing much the same thing. 00:04:32.94\00:04:34.50 And may be they're reflecting the norms of thinking 00:04:34.53\00:04:37.91 that they're getting in the schools. 00:04:37.94\00:04:38.97 And Hollywood in general is teaching 00:04:39.00\00:04:42.18 that there are certain humans that are expendable. 00:04:42.21\00:04:45.95 I have a friend-- this is thematic. 00:04:45.98\00:04:50.37 I have a friend they were at a Calgary stampede. 00:04:50.40\00:04:53.17 And one of the rides-- a little pod came flying off 00:04:53.20\00:04:56.78 it was up in the air and the pods had people in them. 00:04:56.81\00:04:59.31 And flying off and there were people hurt 00:04:59.34\00:05:02.07 I don't know if anybody was mortally hurt 00:05:02.10\00:05:04.68 but there were seriously hurt. 00:05:04.71\00:05:07.12 And her daughter said to her, 00:05:07.15\00:05:09.04 oh mother I don't know why you're so upset. 00:05:09.07\00:05:11.53 We don't know anybody that was in the pod. Incredible. 00:05:11.56\00:05:14.64 But this is Hollywood their hero is running 00:05:14.67\00:05:18.95 and you know the bullets are flying 00:05:18.98\00:05:21.68 and you know the people are dying and you just. 00:05:21.71\00:05:24.45 You'll find yourself thinking phew, 00:05:24.48\00:05:25.98 I'm glad it wasn't his wife 00:05:26.01\00:05:27.35 or I'm so glad there wasn't the daughter. 00:05:27.38\00:05:29.18 We didn't know that person they're not involved 00:05:29.21\00:05:31.50 with our little group that we hope get through. 00:05:31.53\00:05:33.86 And you get taught. You know-- 00:05:33.89\00:05:36.61 And what's that statement that girl says, 00:05:36.64\00:05:38.56 I mean on several levels 00:05:38.59\00:05:40.05 in most particularly there is no empathy. 00:05:40.08\00:05:42.50 No there is this desensitization. 00:05:42.53\00:05:45.68 We only care if it's someone we know. 00:05:45.71\00:05:48.49 There are people on the other side of it, 00:05:48.52\00:05:50.85 there are people that are expendable. 00:05:50.88\00:05:52.61 Its okay, we didn't know them. 00:05:52.64\00:05:54.37 It's okay, it's not the hero. 00:05:54.40\00:05:56.37 You know, its okay, 00:05:56.40\00:05:58.33 there wasn't enough money you know 00:05:58.36\00:06:00.11 for that baby to have a good life. 00:06:00.14\00:06:01.73 It's okay, the mother didn't want them. 00:06:01.76\00:06:04.14 And this reminds me of one of the television shows 00:06:04.17\00:06:10.00 that I cannot name 00:06:10.03\00:06:11.36 but it's a weekly drama and the hero. 00:06:11.39\00:06:14.31 In Canada? 00:06:14.34\00:06:15.37 You know, this is in the United States. 00:06:15.40\00:06:17.59 The hero is a serial killer 00:06:17.62\00:06:20.11 but he only kills people who deserved to be killed. 00:06:20.14\00:06:23.57 And what are you being taught? 00:06:23.60\00:06:25.40 You're being desensitized to gratuitous killing 00:06:25.43\00:06:29.02 for one thing and you're being taught 00:06:29.05\00:06:30.53 that there are certain people who are expendable 00:06:30.56\00:06:32.88 and they are the bad people are always expendable. 00:06:32.91\00:06:36.28 And I bring that back to the curriculum 00:06:36.31\00:06:39.60 that's being taught and Quebec 00:06:39.63\00:06:41.38 and for 11 years the children are being taught 00:06:41.41\00:06:44.84 that fundamentalism is bad, 00:06:44.87\00:06:46.83 extremism is bad, and fanatics are bad. 00:06:46.86\00:06:50.08 And I have a picture that I collected 00:06:50.11\00:06:54.24 and I will try to find it 00:06:54.27\00:06:57.50 but it basically its protesters with signs that say, 00:06:57.53\00:07:02.59 "When we deal with the Christian-- 00:07:02.62\00:07:05.29 you know fanatics 00:07:05.32\00:07:07.29 then we'll have really solved some problems." 00:07:07.32\00:07:10.17 And conditioning definitely works. 00:07:10.20\00:07:12.33 You know we were always talking about Hitler 00:07:12.36\00:07:14.42 and people get offended that you draw an analogy 00:07:14.45\00:07:16.43 because certainly we don't live in an Nazi regime now 00:07:16.46\00:07:21.93 and how we come we don't know. 00:07:21.96\00:07:24.01 But I think some overdrawn analogies 00:07:24.04\00:07:26.33 can still underscore things. 00:07:26.36\00:07:27.87 Now Hitler tend on the Jews. 00:07:27.90\00:07:30.10 I mean, that was his personal bias 00:07:30.13\00:07:31.66 that he used as a government policy. 00:07:31.69\00:07:34.77 But you know it happened over a long period of time. 00:07:34.80\00:07:36.63 The Roman Catholic Church 00:07:36.66\00:07:38.02 the dominant Christian church of the Middle Ages 00:07:38.05\00:07:41.61 definitely encouraged the idea 00:07:41.64\00:07:43.74 that the Jews had crucified Christ 00:07:43.77\00:07:47.74 and that they brought their own punishment upon themselves. 00:07:47.77\00:07:51.35 Even before the church might have acted 00:07:51.38\00:07:53.21 on that they were inculcating the view deserve-- 00:07:53.24\00:07:55.80 you know people deserve what they are getting. 00:07:55.83\00:07:57.79 They were guilty parties. 00:07:57.82\00:08:00.55 So then the church started to act more aggressively 00:08:00.58\00:08:04.02 and there were programs and so on. 00:08:04.05\00:08:07.10 And coming right down to the Hitler age. 00:08:07.13\00:08:10.02 You know that already 00:08:10.05\00:08:11.19 it had been planted in that society. 00:08:11.22\00:08:13.69 You know as people that are sort of under the frown of God 00:08:13.72\00:08:16.40 they got what they deserve. 00:08:16.43\00:08:18.12 And then the Nazis who the people forget this, 00:08:18.15\00:08:21.59 they were the first real case 00:08:21.62\00:08:23.14 in the modern world of propaganda 00:08:23.17\00:08:24.99 as a tool, a calculated tool. 00:08:25.02\00:08:28.71 And they had these films 00:08:28.74\00:08:29.92 remember the pictures of rats running through the cities. 00:08:29.95\00:08:32.57 These are the Jews infesting our society. 00:08:32.60\00:08:35.99 These cursed people that got what they deserve 00:08:36.02\00:08:37.96 before now they're coming at you and so on. 00:08:37.99\00:08:40.33 And there were several years of that 00:08:40.36\00:08:42.59 before anything really happened in Germany. 00:08:42.62\00:08:44.78 They just planted the idea that, 00:08:44.81\00:08:46.56 you know, these are the scourge of our society, 00:08:46.59\00:08:49.38 the problematic thing. 00:08:49.41\00:08:50.87 The people that really are under a curse anywhere. 00:08:50.90\00:08:54.16 And so when bad stuff started to happen 00:08:54.19\00:08:56.45 it was like the pod that flies off. 00:08:56.48\00:08:58.52 Well don't worry they're not us, 00:08:58.55\00:08:59.91 they're not Germans, they're not real people, 00:08:59.94\00:09:02.18 there's the people that are troubled any how. 00:09:02.21\00:09:05.57 I think it was conditioning. Yes. 00:09:05.60\00:09:07.02 And yes some very good people not so much in Germany 00:09:07.05\00:09:10.66 but in Holland and places 00:09:10.69\00:09:12.19 reacted against it and protected them. 00:09:12.22\00:09:14.26 Not all human were subverted 00:09:14.29\00:09:15.69 but the group shift that came about 00:09:15.72\00:09:18.73 by this sort of inculcation 00:09:18.76\00:09:20.63 and just reinforcement over and over. 00:09:20.66\00:09:22.29 Yes. It was very real and intoxicant. 00:09:22.32\00:09:24.22 And you're right we're getting into that same sort of stuff. 00:09:24.25\00:09:26.90 I believe it. 00:09:26.93\00:09:27.96 Its desensitization and it creates a situation 00:09:27.99\00:09:32.89 when the real thing happens 00:09:32.92\00:09:35.83 there is no cognitive dissonance. 00:09:35.86\00:09:37.83 You know there is an acceptance. 00:09:37.86\00:09:39.01 Yeah. You have heard this before. 00:09:39.04\00:09:40.39 You have seen this before. 00:09:40.42\00:09:41.52 So I found the picture and sorry 00:09:41.55\00:09:44.00 I can't show it to our viewers. 00:09:44.03\00:09:45.56 But the sign says, life begins 00:09:45.59\00:09:48.19 so it's a play on when life begins 00:09:48.22\00:09:50.67 with respective to abortion 00:09:50.70\00:09:52.18 when you stand up to Christian fascists. 00:09:52.21\00:09:56.04 All right, so are you are the enemy. 00:09:56.07\00:10:00.09 You know, Christians are the enemy. 00:10:00.12\00:10:01.60 Christian fascists are the enemy. 00:10:01.63\00:10:03.57 And it's thematic as I had saying, 00:10:03.60\00:10:06.28 it's in education, it's in media. 00:10:06.31\00:10:08.32 Every time you turn around 00:10:08.35\00:10:10.75 there is some reference to a fascists 00:10:10.78\00:10:13.05 or an extremist or a fanatic or fundamentalist 00:10:13.08\00:10:17.68 and they are becoming public enemy number one. 00:10:17.71\00:10:21.42 Now there is little off 00:10:21.45\00:10:23.85 from where we're heading with this 00:10:23.88\00:10:25.07 but I think this is partly enabled 00:10:25.10\00:10:27.33 by too many Christians rising to the bait. 00:10:27.36\00:10:30.09 This is one of my burdens. 00:10:30.12\00:10:31.34 Too many Christians since the 70s in the US 00:10:31.37\00:10:34.13 particularly have taken a political cause. 00:10:34.16\00:10:36.95 They're aggressive, they're social engineering. 00:10:36.98\00:10:39.97 Yes. In your face which get legislative proposals in that. 00:10:40.00\00:10:43.05 And there are perfect foiled to this sort of stuff. 00:10:43.08\00:10:45.58 But in a nominally Christian culture 00:10:45.61\00:10:47.67 which Canada and the U.S. still are if more Christians 00:10:47.70\00:10:51.60 where exemplifying Christian values 00:10:51.63\00:10:53.47 and showing the falsehood of this sort of attack. 00:10:53.50\00:10:56.17 It couldn't gain much traction. 00:10:56.20\00:10:58.86 Right, again back to the individual 00:10:58.89\00:11:01.55 and the regeneration of the heart. 00:11:01.58\00:11:03.46 I quote from the Desire of Ages. 00:11:03.49\00:11:06.26 In another program I would share 00:11:06.29\00:11:07.54 the very powerful quote from Ellen White. 00:11:07.57\00:11:10.81 It was writing about the life of Christ 00:11:10.84\00:11:12.49 how He is was not concerned with temporal power 00:11:12.52\00:11:15.98 and political activity but changing the heart. 00:11:16.01\00:11:19.08 And I think that to bring back to the educational 00:11:19.11\00:11:22.54 setting that the students 00:11:22.57\00:11:24.81 are being taught to think analytically 00:11:24.84\00:11:27.73 but they are not being taught to reason 00:11:27.76\00:11:29.58 from cause to effect. 00:11:29.61\00:11:31.66 So when you narrow the scope of your field division 00:11:31.69\00:11:36.37 you really loose the context within 00:11:36.40\00:11:38.84 which these discussions are being made 00:11:38.87\00:11:41.48 such as abortion or when life begins. 00:11:41.51\00:11:44.30 And the threat is very real 00:11:44.33\00:11:47.65 because you now have a generation 00:11:47.68\00:11:50.35 that is not processing. 00:11:50.38\00:11:52.32 There are not problems solving 00:11:52.35\00:11:54.52 in the context of reasoning from cause to effect. 00:11:54.55\00:11:57.31 They are just slicking at the solving the problem 00:11:57.34\00:12:00.14 how do we get rid of the problem. 00:12:00.17\00:12:01.92 Well we're going to kill off the babies. 00:12:01.95\00:12:03.26 That's the best way to do it. 00:12:03.29\00:12:04.32 Well they're given limited choices and it's, 00:12:04.35\00:12:05.42 you know, here is the question is it a,b,c. 00:12:05.45\00:12:08.86 Yes, yes. That is the standard educational-- 00:12:08.89\00:12:12.38 And this is how we process our social problems. 00:12:12.41\00:12:16.20 I want to read a quote it's a letter written in 1899. 00:12:16.23\00:12:24.06 It was written by Ellen White a wonderful author. 00:12:24.09\00:12:28.55 And Seventh-day Adventist author 00:12:28.58\00:12:30.23 and pioneer of the church. Yes. 00:12:30.26\00:12:31.68 And it was published 00:12:31.71\00:12:32.75 in the SDA Bible Commentary as well. 00:12:32.78\00:12:36.25 It's the Bible commentary 00:12:36.28\00:12:37.44 that the church prepared for its members-- 00:12:37.47\00:12:39.14 They do. To help understand Bible passages. 00:12:39.17\00:12:42.48 It's interpretive not adding to it. Right. 00:12:42.51\00:12:45.97 "As a people we do not understand 00:12:46.00\00:12:47.87 as we should the great conflict 00:12:47.90\00:12:50.20 going on between invisible agencies, 00:12:50.23\00:12:53.08 the controversy between loyal and disloyal angels. 00:12:53.11\00:12:56.45 Evil angels are constantly at work, 00:12:56.48\00:12:58.43 planning their line of attack, 00:12:58.46\00:13:00.13 controlling as commanders, kings, and rulers, 00:13:00.16\00:13:03.57 the disloyal human forces. 00:13:03.60\00:13:06.20 I call upon the ministers of Christ 00:13:06.23\00:13:09.07 to press home upon the understanding of all 00:13:09.10\00:13:11.58 who come within the reach of their voice 00:13:11.61\00:13:13.61 the truth of the ministration of angels. 00:13:13.64\00:13:15.73 Do not indulge in fanciful speculations. 00:13:15.76\00:13:18.29 The written Word is our only safety. 00:13:18.32\00:13:20.81 We must pray as did Daniel, that we may be guarded 00:13:20.84\00:13:23.54 by heavenly intelligences. 00:13:23.57\00:13:25.61 As ministering spirits, 00:13:25.64\00:13:27.31 angels are sent forth to minister to those 00:13:27.34\00:13:29.43 who shall be heirs of salvation." 00:13:29.46\00:13:30.90 And here's is what I think is my takeaway. 00:13:30.93\00:13:34.76 "Pray my brethren, 00:13:34.79\00:13:36.26 pray as you have never prayed before. 00:13:36.29\00:13:38.64 We are not prepared for the Lord's coming. 00:13:38.67\00:13:41.33 We need to make thorough work for eternity." 00:13:41.36\00:13:44.93 And I think that these issues are coming together 00:13:44.96\00:13:48.15 in a significant and powerful way 00:13:48.18\00:13:50.15 and we need to pray as we-- 00:13:50.18\00:13:51.57 And that's calling people of faith 00:13:51.60\00:13:53.14 to a spiritual sensibility to realize 00:13:53.17\00:13:55.01 that battle is on a spiritual level for us. 00:13:55.04\00:13:57.84 Yes. 00:13:57.87\00:13:59.67 We're running out of time in this half of program. 00:13:59.70\00:14:01.86 So I will make a take a break here. 00:14:01.89\00:14:03.62 But please come back 00:14:03.65\00:14:05.16 we're dealing with some serious issues 00:14:05.19\00:14:07.10 under the overarching title of Education. 00:14:07.13\00:14:10.43 But how does it affect societal viewpoints 00:14:10.46\00:14:13.70 and indeed religious liberty. 00:14:13.73\00:14:15.05 We'll be right back. 00:14:15.08\00:14:16.27
