Welcome back to Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.36\00:00:08.81 Before the break I was talking with guest Tina Ramirez 00:00:08.84\00:00:12.67 about how can we engage-- the question of the challenge 00:00:12.70\00:00:15.81 of how we can engage young people in religious liberty 00:00:15.84\00:00:18.42 because we must, it's not really an option, is it? No. 00:00:18.45\00:00:22.50 They're the world of tomorrow. 00:00:22.53\00:00:23.57 In fact in reality they're the world 00:00:23.60\00:00:25.22 of today more than half. 00:00:25.25\00:00:26.53 What was the age-wise break up, half of the world is under 25. 00:00:26.56\00:00:29.29 Yeah, 50% of the world's population. 00:00:29.32\00:00:31.39 And even that's misleading 00:00:31.42\00:00:32.71 because you can get in many countries 00:00:32.74\00:00:34.04 where the proportion is way, way higher for I think it's up. 00:00:34.07\00:00:37.19 In many countries the majority are under 20. 00:00:37.22\00:00:40.61 Yeah. You know there's a huge youth bulge in many countries. 00:00:40.64\00:00:43.83 And interestingly enough there are statistics that show 00:00:43.86\00:00:45.91 that when youth population has reached over 00:00:45.94\00:00:48.70 a certain percentage like over 30% 00:00:48.73\00:00:50.78 there is more likelihood of civil conflict. 00:00:50.81\00:00:53.46 So it's definitely important to engage them 00:00:53.49\00:00:55.83 on human rights and religious freedom-- 00:00:55.86\00:00:57.28 Especially if it's more than half of the males-- 00:00:57.31\00:00:59.93 Yeah, it's true. 00:00:59.96\00:01:02.33 And in China I'm sure that will be a problem 00:01:02.36\00:01:03.73 because of the one child policy. 00:01:03.76\00:01:04.79 Absolutely, I was thinking about that 00:01:04.82\00:01:05.85 when we talk about the youth people. 00:01:05.88\00:01:06.93 Yeah. Well I think there is a story 00:01:06.96\00:01:08.88 that will probably help me answer that question. 00:01:08.91\00:01:12.82 And when I worked for Konstantin Frank 00:01:12.85\00:01:15.48 several years ago back in 2007. 00:01:15.51\00:01:17.98 The first case that I took for him, 00:01:18.01\00:01:20.13 I was an international religious freedom staffer 00:01:20.16\00:01:22.34 that was the only issue I handled for him. 00:01:22.37\00:01:24.09 And I was the only staffer in Congress 00:01:24.12\00:01:25.99 at the time working on religious freedom. 00:01:26.02\00:01:27.87 And so the American Islamic Congress had approached me 00:01:27.90\00:01:30.59 about a case of the young man name Kareem Abdul Amer. 00:01:30.62\00:01:34.29 And Kareem was imprisoned in Egypt. 00:01:34.32\00:01:36.80 He had been imprisoned for several months at that point. 00:01:36.83\00:01:39.41 And he was in solitary confinement. 00:01:39.44\00:01:41.14 And they contacted me because in a matter of weeks 00:01:41.17\00:01:44.18 they were going to put him on immediate trial 00:01:44.21\00:01:46.91 and sentenced him to about 10 years. 00:01:46.94\00:01:50.05 And they knew he would be tortured 00:01:50.08\00:01:51.92 that he would never get out. 00:01:51.95\00:01:54.03 And what was the charge? At least in one piece. 00:01:54.06\00:01:55.60 Well, at the time there wasn't a charge but it was 00:01:55.63\00:01:57.52 because he had written a blog. 00:01:57.55\00:01:59.31 And in his blog he had criticized the president, 00:01:59.34\00:02:03.12 President Mubarak at the time for attacks on Christians. 00:02:03.15\00:02:06.68 There's major attack that happened 00:02:06.71\00:02:08.11 in the city of Al-Kosh and so-- 00:02:08.14\00:02:10.51 And what was-- was he a Muslim, Christian? 00:02:10.54\00:02:12.48 He is Muslim. 00:02:12.51\00:02:13.54 Yeah, and he had been trained by the Americans Islamic Congress 00:02:13.57\00:02:15.65 in their training conferences. 00:02:15.68\00:02:17.37 So they contact me and they said "can you help." 00:02:17.40\00:02:19.76 And so I said "sure." So we drafted a letter. 00:02:19.79\00:02:21.77 The Congressmen Trent Franks 00:02:21.80\00:02:23.76 and on other end of the spectrum Barney Frank. 00:02:23.79\00:02:27.12 So you can't go more conservative and more liberal 00:02:27.15\00:02:29.22 than the US congress. 00:02:29.25\00:02:30.58 Cosigned this letter we send it to the Egyptian embassy. 00:02:30.61\00:02:34.18 And the Egyptian embassy called the Congressmen right away 00:02:34.21\00:02:37.68 and the next day the trial was postponed. 00:02:37.71\00:02:40.23 And it was a miracle. 00:02:40.26\00:02:41.73 And everybody in Egypt was shocked 00:02:41.76\00:02:43.98 because they all-- the social media world in Egypt 00:02:44.01\00:02:47.62 and around the world is really growing 00:02:47.65\00:02:49.69 but it's still so small that everybody knows each other 00:02:49.72\00:02:52.07 and Kareem was a prominent blogger at the time. 00:02:52.10\00:02:54.25 He was the first person ever imprisoned and sentenced 00:02:54.28\00:02:57.24 for writing about religion. 00:02:57.27\00:02:59.31 And so it's really important case. 00:02:59.34\00:03:01.60 So we--anyway his trial was postponed 00:03:01.63\00:03:04.42 and then within a matter of several more weeks, 00:03:04.45\00:03:07.17 he finally was sentenced to four years in imprison. 00:03:07.20\00:03:10.55 One year, for criticizing the president, 00:03:10.58\00:03:12.85 and three years for insulting Islam under Article 98 00:03:12.88\00:03:17.95 of the penal code in Egypt which basically outlaws blasphemy. 00:03:17.98\00:03:23.50 So because he was critical of the president 00:03:23.53\00:03:26.11 and of Islam for the way 00:03:26.14\00:03:28.83 that these Christians have been treated, 00:03:28.86\00:03:30.98 he was sentenced to six to four years in prison. 00:03:31.01\00:03:33.38 But everybody was amazed 00:03:33.41\00:03:34.46 because they thought he will get ten years. 00:03:34.49\00:03:36.32 And by the way I doubt under that legal system 00:03:36.35\00:03:38.75 it's like the US where you're often about half the time, 00:03:38.78\00:03:41.49 you mind your business-- 00:03:41.52\00:03:43.36 Yeah, there's no early exit. 00:03:43.39\00:03:44.84 Yeah, you serve the full, I mean he served more than that 00:03:44.87\00:03:47.65 because he served for four years, 00:03:47.68\00:03:49.74 plus the other months he got but. 00:03:49.77\00:03:52.32 What's interesting about that case in light of this discussion 00:03:52.35\00:03:54.81 about youth is that Kareem is a young man. 00:03:54.84\00:03:56.80 And so I worked for the Congressmen for four years 00:03:56.83\00:04:00.01 and right before I left it was, 00:04:00.04\00:04:03.51 it was 2010 which was right before the Arab Spring. 00:04:03.54\00:04:06.76 And so Kareem was released 00:04:06.79\00:04:08.07 in the fall around October, November. 00:04:08.10\00:04:10.18 And when he was released, he went and he helped to fight. 00:04:10.21\00:04:12.94 He up stand with other young people in the revolution 00:04:12.97\00:04:17.13 that stood hand in hand with Christians and Muslims 00:04:17.16\00:04:19.64 against the Mubarak regime and all of that began in Egypt 00:04:19.67\00:04:22.89 because the Coptic community was attacked on New Year's Eve 00:04:22.92\00:04:26.78 and the government allowed it to happen. 00:04:26.81\00:04:28.84 In Alexandria this was the-- 00:04:28.87\00:04:30.15 There was the big attack. 00:04:30.18\00:04:31.59 And so that ignited this huge response from civil society. 00:04:31.62\00:04:36.42 Many of them were young people 00:04:36.45\00:04:38.74 and were standing hand in hand together Muslim and Christian 00:04:38.77\00:04:41.13 fighting for religious freedom and human rights 00:04:41.16\00:04:43.44 and just democracy or freedom to not be imprisoned 00:04:43.47\00:04:47.05 and just snuffed off, you know life wasted way or tortured. 00:04:47.08\00:04:51.16 Kareem was lucky. 00:04:51.19\00:04:52.35 Most of the bloggers, the people that are imprisoned 00:04:52.38\00:04:53.95 were tortured and brutally treated 00:04:53.98\00:04:55.47 but because we monitored this case for four years. 00:04:55.50\00:04:58.41 He got out safely and he took part in that revolution 00:04:58.44\00:05:01.09 which has transformed the country. 00:05:01.12\00:05:02.54 I don't know if it was him but I saw several of those bloggres. 00:05:02.57\00:05:06.04 Young people are involved in social media 00:05:06.07\00:05:08.69 came forward during the revolution, 00:05:08.72\00:05:10.30 although later I heard a few of them interviewed 00:05:10.33\00:05:12.93 saying that it had been hijacked from them. 00:05:12.96\00:05:15.45 Well, absolutely. They moved around and they felt betrayed. 00:05:15.48\00:05:17.26 Yeah, even the young woman that I had met 00:05:17.29\00:05:19.07 when I was working on Kareem's case. 00:05:19.10\00:05:21.81 Daliaziada and who is now still working 00:05:21.84\00:05:25.11 in the civil society in Egypt. 00:05:25.14\00:05:27.50 She was--she had worked with the number of woman to go out 00:05:27.53\00:05:32.81 and lead a protest during the revolution for woman's right 00:05:32.84\00:05:35.97 and some of the men told them go home, 00:05:36.00\00:05:38.38 it's not your time yet. 00:05:38.41\00:05:39.77 And so definitely, you know, the revolution was taken over 00:05:39.80\00:05:45.55 by the Muslim brotherhood, we see that now. 00:05:45.58\00:05:47.51 But the good thing is that you have people 00:05:47.54\00:05:49.20 like Kareem that are alive. 00:05:49.23\00:05:50.97 And that are still fighting 00:05:51.00\00:05:52.69 that extremist etiology in government, 00:05:52.72\00:05:55.75 that's that was so entrenched they couldn't just be with, 00:05:55.78\00:05:57.97 you know, eliminated with Mubarak. 00:05:58.00\00:06:00.12 And so because we helped him there 00:06:00.15\00:06:04.35 when he was defending Christians. 00:06:04.38\00:06:05.41 Made a big difference. 00:06:05.44\00:06:06.47 Well, it has made a difference and it will make the difference 00:06:06.50\00:06:08.52 in the future of that country. 00:06:08.55\00:06:09.84 But I say this because young people around the world 00:06:09.87\00:06:14.65 are engaged in so many different ways than in the past. 00:06:14.68\00:06:18.01 And so when we're looking at how to engage youth. 00:06:18.04\00:06:19.98 We really need to think much differently than we have before. 00:06:20.01\00:06:23.29 And one of the reasons that I mentioned in the story is 00:06:23.32\00:06:25.61 because we need to recognize the importance of social media. 00:06:25.64\00:06:28.94 Social media usage throughout 00:06:28.97\00:06:31.01 the Middle East, Africa and Asia and much of the world 00:06:31.04\00:06:34.14 is just I mean it's expanding at rapid paces 00:06:34.17\00:06:38.03 and I mean it's amazing what's happening. 00:06:38.06\00:06:39.62 Well, you can tell when you travel to these countries, 00:06:39.65\00:06:41.39 there's internet cafes and so on. 00:06:41.42\00:06:43.72 And they use these for self or for texting 00:06:43.75\00:06:46.10 and for sending messages and tweets. 00:06:46.13\00:06:47.59 They don't have computer themselves 00:06:47.62\00:06:49.53 but they will pay good money stand in line, 00:06:49.56\00:06:51.63 I see the lines of them for a few minutes 00:06:51.66\00:06:53.84 at the computer terminal, and that's what they're doing. 00:06:53.87\00:06:55.98 And so we know that youth are affected by the culture 00:06:56.01\00:06:58.70 but if our culture isn't talking about religious freedom 00:06:58.73\00:07:00.71 because our media doesn't care how they ever going 00:07:00.74\00:07:02.75 to be influenced by it. 00:07:02.78\00:07:03.95 But if we can bypass the media through social media 00:07:03.98\00:07:06.93 and engage them somehow and show them young people 00:07:06.96\00:07:10.05 around the world like them that are standing up 00:07:10.08\00:07:12.14 for human rights, for dignity, for truth, 00:07:12.17\00:07:15.67 for the ability to speak their mind 00:07:15.70\00:07:17.24 and to not be attacked because of it 00:07:17.27\00:07:19.20 on a blog or anything else. 00:07:19.23\00:07:20.75 That's something that young people will get behind 00:07:20.78\00:07:22.27 and they want to. 00:07:22.30\00:07:23.33 That's not a matter of whether this young man Kareem 00:07:23.36\00:07:25.33 is religious or not. 00:07:25.36\00:07:26.56 It's about the fact that he has an opinion 00:07:26.59\00:07:28.99 and it happens to be an opinion on religion 00:07:29.02\00:07:32.31 that he wants to express. 00:07:32.34\00:07:33.48 But he doesn't have the freedom to do it 00:07:33.51\00:07:34.78 in a society that restricts religious freedom. 00:07:34.81\00:07:37.46 So I think, yeah. 00:07:37.49\00:07:38.72 And it has the ability to use that cliché to go viral. 00:07:38.75\00:07:41.44 Yeah, it does. 00:07:41.47\00:07:42.50 Like the young man can infect in a positive way 00:07:42.53\00:07:44.90 to tens of thousands. 00:07:44.93\00:07:46.45 And we saw in Iran with the uprising 00:07:46.48\00:07:49.04 that happened in Iran right around. 00:07:49.07\00:07:50.17 That was young people. 00:07:50.20\00:07:51.23 The first year of Obama's-- of Obama's first term in office. 00:07:51.26\00:07:54.72 These young people they spread all of that information 00:07:54.75\00:07:57.63 through social media and they were just dying 00:07:57.66\00:07:59.65 for somebody to come up and stand behind them 00:07:59.68\00:08:01.95 and to support them. 00:08:01.98\00:08:03.01 And what happened. We can quickly ignore it. 00:08:03.04\00:08:05.35 And they got brutalized by the Iranian government. 00:08:05.38\00:08:08.49 And they were just left in the dust. 00:08:08.52\00:08:10.20 But with Kareem, we know that can be a difference 00:08:10.23\00:08:13.17 between life and death for these people 00:08:13.20\00:08:14.47 and between the difference, 00:08:14.50\00:08:15.69 between having a continuous close regime 00:08:15.72\00:08:17.79 like we have in Iran and a regime in Egypt 00:08:17.82\00:08:19.85 which isn't great by any stretch of imagination right now. 00:08:19.88\00:08:22.89 But those young people will not give up 00:08:22.92\00:08:24.68 that fight in Egypt ever again. 00:08:24.71\00:08:26.41 I don't think that we're going to see this regime 00:08:26.44\00:08:29.17 that we have in Egypt last much longer 00:08:29.20\00:08:30.82 because they've tasted freedom, 00:08:30.85\00:08:32.87 they fought for it and they're not going to end 00:08:32.90\00:08:35.50 and stop until they've gotten it. And so-- 00:08:35.53\00:08:38.56 Well, my prediction for Egypt 00:08:38.59\00:08:40.14 is that there will be military takeover. 00:08:40.17\00:08:42.49 Well, I don't know what will happen. But we hope. 00:08:42.52\00:08:44.88 The military takeover in the past was not accurate, 00:08:44.91\00:08:47.48 that's Mubarak essentially was. Absolutely. 00:08:47.51\00:08:50.68 We're definitely at the precipice 00:08:50.71\00:08:52.23 or the crossroads of some important-- 00:08:52.26\00:08:53.90 And I'm sure young-I mean young people will always flow 00:08:53.93\00:08:56.78 but I'm sure this coming generation of young people 00:08:56.81\00:08:59.68 are going to send this world in some interesting direction. 00:08:59.71\00:09:04.07 So it's their's to command. And that's-- 00:09:04.10\00:09:06.69 And we need the Christians so, 00:09:06.72\00:09:08.03 it's not so much may be little different for me. 00:09:08.06\00:09:10.68 But I don't think the question is so much 00:09:10.71\00:09:12.18 where the young people will determine the future. 00:09:12.21\00:09:15.74 But can how can we insert 00:09:15.77\00:09:18.51 religious liberty into their origin. 00:09:18.54\00:09:19.70 Oh, absolutely. 00:09:19.73\00:09:20.79 No I think that's the perfect question 00:09:20.82\00:09:23.60 because it can go, one direction 00:09:23.63\00:09:26.24 which will be really better, 00:09:26.27\00:09:27.30 it can go in really good direction. 00:09:27.33\00:09:28.41 And so one of the things I think it's so important 00:09:28.44\00:09:31.08 is that young people in the west become inspired 00:09:31.11\00:09:33.92 by these young people around the Middle East 00:09:33.95\00:09:35.88 and the rest of the world 00:09:35.91\00:09:36.94 that are truly standing up for freedom. 00:09:36.97\00:09:39.39 We don't understand what religious freedom is here. 00:09:39.42\00:09:41.45 They don't care about it. 00:09:41.48\00:09:42.55 But when they see a young Muslim that if it, 00:09:42.58\00:09:47.19 you know, it's not about a matter of faith for him. 00:09:47.22\00:09:48.83 It's a matter of whether every human being 00:09:48.86\00:09:51.18 in this country is free to live out who they are freely 00:09:51.21\00:09:55.06 or if they're going to be oppressed for and imprisoned. 00:09:55.09\00:09:57.73 You have changed my view of Liberty Magazine. 00:09:57.76\00:10:00.39 I'll do something. 00:10:00.42\00:10:01.48 I have stayed clear of having too many stories 00:10:01.51\00:10:05.21 because they're interesting 00:10:05.24\00:10:06.30 but they don't illustrate a larger point. 00:10:06.33\00:10:08.31 But I can see now the value of certain stories 00:10:08.34\00:10:10.84 to inspire people and I think we'll put a few stories 00:10:10.87\00:10:13.98 into inspire because, you know, 00:10:14.01\00:10:16.47 just this one that you are saying this young man. 00:10:16.50\00:10:18.91 Yeah. Amazing, amazing-- 00:10:18.94\00:10:20.48 No, there is definitely a lot of stories out there 00:10:20.51\00:10:22.64 of these young people doing inspiring things. 00:10:22.67\00:10:24.85 And it will be inspiration for the youth in America 00:10:24.88\00:10:28.18 if they see those stories they come alongside. 00:10:28.21\00:10:30.99 And whether it's liking them on Facebook 00:10:31.02\00:10:32.98 or whatever it might be, 00:10:33.01\00:10:34.22 just those added numbers of support means life 00:10:34.25\00:10:37.85 for these people in the Middle East around the world 00:10:37.88\00:10:40.41 that are really fighting for something 00:10:40.44\00:10:43.67 much bigger than just themselves. 00:10:43.70\00:10:47.22 A lot of the cynics of late are inclined to make 00:10:47.25\00:10:50.82 much of the fact that Mohammed may have married young brides. 00:10:50.85\00:10:55.24 A lot of the cynics that I get emails from are inclined 00:10:55.27\00:10:58.60 to make much of the Rabbis allowing 00:10:58.63\00:11:01.33 for marriage of distinctly young minors. 00:11:01.36\00:11:04.62 Those are really cultural misunderstandings 00:11:04.65\00:11:07.68 that we should better leave alone. 00:11:07.71\00:11:09.57 What I find in studying history is that over and over 00:11:09.60\00:11:13.98 the people have made a difference in history. 00:11:14.01\00:11:16.50 The people that have made a difference in religion 00:11:16.53\00:11:19.37 and let's be more specific in Christianity, 00:11:19.40\00:11:21.94 where young people those disciples 00:11:21.97\00:11:24.79 that followed Jesus were invariably young men. 00:11:24.82\00:11:28.23 Those missionaries that went out 00:11:28.26\00:11:30.46 in the early days of Christianity 00:11:30.49\00:11:32.06 were invariably young people and they made a difference. 00:11:32.09\00:11:36.31 And somehow those of us who're little bit older to see 00:11:36.34\00:11:39.71 the value of religious freedom and what needs to be done, 00:11:39.74\00:11:42.97 have to communicate to young people the burning 00:11:43.00\00:11:46.66 need for them to act 00:11:46.69\00:11:48.38 because young people do have the energy. 00:11:48.41\00:11:50.71 Young people do have the idealism. 00:11:50.74\00:11:53.38 And as Jesus said speaking to the Pharisees 00:11:53.41\00:11:56.53 ''the world belongs to the young." 00:11:56.56\00:12:01.52 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:01.55\00:12:04.72
