Welcome back to the "Liberty Insider." 00:00:06.38\00:00:08.59 Before the break with guest Todd McFarland, 00:00:08.62\00:00:11.20 we were talking about the trademark case 00:00:11.23\00:00:14.26 in the Adventist church, but on a large stage, 00:00:14.29\00:00:18.27 you know, why would a church or a church member use the law? 00:00:18.30\00:00:22.77 And of course, the law has pulled in. 00:00:22.80\00:00:25.95 I think you cited it once on another program, 00:00:25.98\00:00:27.94 we did another time. 00:00:27.97\00:00:29.72 You know, there were laws that citizenship 00:00:29.75\00:00:32.10 before used freely. 00:00:32.13\00:00:33.59 As long as they enabled his Christian witness, 00:00:33.62\00:00:35.53 some are on contradiction use the laws. 00:00:35.56\00:00:37.46 The law is not wrong. 00:00:37.49\00:00:39.61 I want to just bring something up 00:00:39.64\00:00:41.01 and you're not super familiar with this. 00:00:41.04\00:00:44.33 It was another time, another place. 00:00:44.36\00:00:46.09 When I was in Australia during many of the years 00:00:46.12\00:00:50.63 of the Chamberlain case, there Lindy Chamberlain, 00:00:50.66\00:00:54.24 the wife of the Seventh-day Adventist pastor, 00:00:54.27\00:00:56.17 she and her husband were camping out in the desert 00:00:56.20\00:00:59.46 and a dingo took their child. 00:00:59.49\00:01:01.34 Incredible tragedy. 00:01:01.37\00:01:04.06 Just to be clear, Americans may know this. 00:01:04.09\00:01:05.84 I mean, unfortunately, it's almost become a joke 00:01:05.87\00:01:08.24 in the United States, because of a Seinfeld episode. 00:01:08.27\00:01:10.66 Yes. 00:01:10.69\00:01:12.06 No, but that phrase, "A dingo ate my baby," 00:01:12.09\00:01:14.64 I mean, you know, it's a very disrespectable show. 00:01:14.67\00:01:17.04 It was a funny show too, but, that was of course-- 00:01:17.07\00:01:19.36 They trivialized it. They trivialized it. 00:01:19.39\00:01:20.91 A very real bizarre tragedy. 00:01:20.94\00:01:23.50 Yeah, and of course those characters, 00:01:23.53\00:01:25.03 you know, were known for that. 00:01:25.06\00:01:26.43 But any way that phrase that Americans 00:01:26.46\00:01:28.63 may know comes from this very real tragedy. 00:01:28.66\00:01:32.00 I'm sorry. 00:01:32.03\00:01:33.40 And without president there will be no case, 00:01:33.43\00:01:35.97 other than a dingo nipping at someone's heels 00:01:36.00\00:01:38.08 perhaps were to really attack or never eaten a child. 00:01:38.11\00:01:42.64 At first people were sympathetic and then 00:01:42.67\00:01:45.58 different behaviors and things that happened into that. 00:01:45.61\00:01:48.26 She was on trail for murder 00:01:48.29\00:01:50.85 and was convicted and sent to jail. 00:01:50.88\00:01:54.35 Since her husband was a minister of the church, 00:01:54.38\00:01:56.58 naturally felt responsible 00:01:56.61\00:01:58.85 even though it didn't happen in the course of his work. 00:01:58.88\00:02:00.94 They are on vacation. 00:02:00.97\00:02:02.34 And another makes an illegal difference, 00:02:02.37\00:02:03.95 but that was not a direct church implication 00:02:03.98\00:02:07.52 and the church backed them very well. 00:02:07.55\00:02:08.94 The membership thought well of them. 00:02:08.97\00:02:13.31 They were not accusing them 00:02:13.34\00:02:14.77 and the church made I think a pivotal mistake. 00:02:14.80\00:02:18.21 They became in essence their legal council, 00:02:18.24\00:02:21.23 rather than through insurance or even direct church funds, 00:02:21.26\00:02:26.68 reimbursed them for hiring lawyers or whatever. 00:02:26.71\00:02:28.63 They hired the lawyers. 00:02:28.66\00:02:30.03 They advised the lawyers rather than 00:02:30.06\00:02:32.09 the Chamberlain's having lawyers. 00:02:32.12\00:02:33.74 And so this case advanced. 00:02:33.77\00:02:36.12 The up's and down's and the incredible 00:02:36.15\00:02:38.72 anti-Chamberlain opinion in the community, 00:02:38.75\00:02:41.48 the church saw it all as an attack on it. 00:02:41.51\00:02:44.43 Well, I think, there was 00:02:44.46\00:02:45.83 and I was not in Australia at that time. 00:02:45.86\00:02:47.81 I believe from talking to people who were there. 00:02:47.84\00:02:49.49 There was a lot of feeling that it wasn't just 00:02:49.52\00:02:51.50 that these were people who a woman had killed her baby, 00:02:51.53\00:02:54.43 who just happened to be an Adventist 00:02:54.46\00:02:55.83 like she might be Catholic or Baptist 00:02:55.86\00:02:57.31 or whatever the government 00:02:57.34\00:02:58.76 or religions are there in Australia. 00:02:58.79\00:03:00.57 It was a feeling. 00:03:00.60\00:03:01.97 There was very much a connection 00:03:02.00\00:03:03.37 that she may have done this 00:03:03.40\00:03:04.77 for religious reasons or these people were wackos 00:03:04.80\00:03:06.17 as far as being Adventist or there was 00:03:06.20\00:03:08.21 within the mind of the community, 00:03:08.24\00:03:09.82 I believe, at least the leadership 00:03:09.85\00:03:11.31 at that time felt there was 00:03:11.34\00:03:12.79 that the community had tied them in and that-- 00:03:12.82\00:03:15.22 That's the half truth. Right. 00:03:15.25\00:03:17.28 And I know that you disagree with some people 00:03:17.31\00:03:18.68 who were there in Australian as well. 00:03:18.71\00:03:20.08 I know what you are saying, 00:03:20.11\00:03:21.48 but what happened was early on a newspaper reporter 00:03:21.51\00:03:24.67 like they always do it, you do it with the newspaper, 00:03:24.70\00:03:27.25 they hardly ever get it straight. 00:03:27.28\00:03:29.15 And so a cub reporter basically looked up 00:03:29.18\00:03:32.59 the meaning of the child's name Azaria 00:03:32.62\00:03:36.13 and got it mixed up with the Azazel, 00:03:36.16\00:03:39.16 which means a sacrifice in the wilderness 00:03:39.19\00:03:40.84 and they came up with a offensively story 00:03:40.87\00:03:42.71 that the child was distinct for sacrifice. 00:03:42.74\00:03:45.41 That colored the inquest where she was cleared. 00:03:45.44\00:03:48.82 That died away. 00:03:48.85\00:03:50.22 I can't really say that there was much public discussion 00:03:50.25\00:03:54.30 after the Adventists disrupt, aberrant religious practices. 00:03:54.33\00:04:01.28 The negative is what I want to bring out. 00:04:01.31\00:04:04.07 By the Church defending this woman who is vilified 00:04:04.10\00:04:06.81 personally and the end novice of the whole country 00:04:06.84\00:04:10.27 settled on her, there's no question. 00:04:10.30\00:04:12.57 They didn't usually say because of wacky Adventist beliefs 00:04:12.60\00:04:15.57 or any thing like that. 00:04:15.60\00:04:16.97 No, it was she who has done this. 00:04:17.00\00:04:18.71 But the church persisted in using 00:04:18.74\00:04:20.99 a heavy handed legal approach to clear the way for her 00:04:21.02\00:04:24.23 and then the eye of the public would turn back 00:04:24.26\00:04:27.04 and as one newspaper article suggest 00:04:27.07\00:04:29.83 that they were like the mafia that didn't want the story out. 00:04:29.86\00:04:33.61 They took out an injunction to stop a made-for-TV film 00:04:33.64\00:04:37.15 without the Chamberlains. 00:04:37.18\00:04:39.32 They had took out several injunctions 00:04:39.35\00:04:41.82 to stop negative stories. 00:04:41.85\00:04:45.25 And again I have thought about this a lot. 00:04:45.28\00:04:47.24 They were not legally wrong whatsoever. 00:04:47.27\00:04:49.46 But I think there was an error made in seeing 00:04:49.49\00:04:53.01 that as the primary way to stop the problem rather than, 00:04:53.04\00:04:56.34 as I tried to say before the break, 00:04:56.37\00:04:57.95 I think any Christian or any religious group 00:04:57.98\00:05:00.82 should realize that they are in a public relations effort. 00:05:00.85\00:05:06.46 And it's how you relate to people, 00:05:06.49\00:05:07.88 not what rights you have and how you can win the day. 00:05:07.91\00:05:10.83 Well, and it is, you know, 00:05:10.86\00:05:12.23 it is very difficult for church leadership 00:05:12.26\00:05:14.10 when they are being attacked and things are been said 00:05:14.13\00:05:16.06 that they absolutely no and can prove or false. 00:05:16.09\00:05:18.65 I mean it's easier just to say here now, 00:05:18.68\00:05:20.49 decades later a continent, you know, 00:05:20.52\00:05:22.79 as a huge ocean removed. 00:05:22.82\00:05:24.47 You will simply say, well, 00:05:24.50\00:05:25.87 you know you should let her play out 00:05:25.90\00:05:27.27 and yell at this people. 00:05:27.30\00:05:28.67 And you know, in the long run taking an injunction 00:05:28.70\00:05:30.23 and I am not saying what they did was right. 00:05:30.26\00:05:32.21 I don't know enough about it to make an opinion. 00:05:32.24\00:05:34.19 Well, it was right legally, but it was still advised. 00:05:34.22\00:05:36.00 Well, I am not saying it was right with who all advised, 00:05:36.03\00:05:38.40 I don't know enough about it, 00:05:38.43\00:05:39.80 but I do understand how you can get them in town 00:05:39.83\00:05:42.16 is very hard to stand beside 00:05:42.19\00:05:44.98 and be falsely accused of something and not respond. 00:05:45.01\00:05:47.97 And when you have mechanisms to run United States, 00:05:48.00\00:05:49.96 you can never get injunction like that. 00:05:49.99\00:05:52.21 But, you know, when you have these tools to not use them 00:05:52.24\00:05:54.44 when you know that you are right 00:05:54.47\00:05:55.84 and you know that the other person 00:05:55.87\00:05:57.24 is just winding you and if they're if actually wrong, 00:05:57.27\00:05:58.64 it's a very hard thing to do. 00:05:58.67\00:06:00.04 Well, absolutely. This is my point. 00:06:00.07\00:06:01.44 It's not a hard and fast, but just to look at the dynamic 00:06:01.47\00:06:04.85 between a pure legal approach and a pure average approach. 00:06:04.88\00:06:09.25 And the other thing, too. Where is the middle ground? 00:06:09.28\00:06:10.78 Things don't always turn out as people intend them. 00:06:10.81\00:06:12.72 So in other words, in retrospect those leaders 00:06:12.75\00:06:14.34 might say it was the wrong thing, 00:06:14.37\00:06:15.74 but at that time it seemed like the right thing to do. 00:06:15.77\00:06:17.14 Well, I think I can share this. 00:06:17.17\00:06:19.30 I was there and I called 00:06:19.33\00:06:21.11 the communication directors together once. 00:06:21.14\00:06:23.17 And they brought in a Seventh-day Adventist 00:06:23.20\00:06:24.89 television personality, Dr. Johnny Knott. 00:06:24.92\00:06:27.43 Still alive, doing very well with, 00:06:27.46\00:06:30.87 he is a doctor but he is on television. 00:06:30.90\00:06:33.11 And I asked him as a person in the media 00:06:33.14\00:06:35.88 what they could do about this. 00:06:35.91\00:06:38.37 And he is very sort of a non-committal, 00:06:38.40\00:06:40.72 but a casual sort of guy. 00:06:40.75\00:06:42.12 And he says, well, he says, I don't know, 00:06:42.15\00:06:44.46 he says, but publicity is publicity 00:06:44.49\00:06:46.52 and I think it will all turn out right at the end. 00:06:46.55\00:06:50.51 And I think that has proven to be true. 00:06:50.54\00:06:53.66 To this date, unfortunately, 00:06:53.69\00:06:56.74 what I can read and what I hear 00:06:56.77\00:06:58.17 when I go to Australia most Australians still think 00:06:58.20\00:07:00.73 she is guilty even though she has been clearly exonerated 00:07:00.76\00:07:04.55 by the legal system and the government apologized. 00:07:04.58\00:07:10.78 You know, that didn't change much 00:07:10.81\00:07:14.34 but the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:07:14.37\00:07:16.11 doesn't have any residual negative image 00:07:16.14\00:07:20.76 because of the Chamberlain thing. 00:07:20.79\00:07:22.16 The church is well thought of. 00:07:22.19\00:07:23.80 It really had no lasting or direct effect on the church 00:07:23.83\00:07:27.70 organization that I could ever see. 00:07:27.73\00:07:30.88 You know, that's good that has happened. 00:07:30.91\00:07:33.03 It can be a lot time to get there 00:07:33.06\00:07:35.24 and unfortunately for religious organization, 00:07:35.27\00:07:37.10 for any organization, it can be hard to know 00:07:37.13\00:07:40.34 when you are making those decisions where to draw line. 00:07:40.37\00:07:42.56 Because you have the least amount of information and, 00:07:42.59\00:07:44.96 you know, things turn out differently than you expected 00:07:44.99\00:07:47.09 so that can be a hard line to draw. 00:07:47.12\00:07:48.83 Unintended consequences. Absolutely. 00:07:48.86\00:07:51.16 I want to throw something else. 00:07:51.19\00:07:52.56 And we only have a few minutes left, 00:07:52.59\00:07:53.96 but it's connected in my mind. 00:07:53.99\00:07:57.51 In many countries around the world, 00:07:57.54\00:07:59.74 the Seventh-day Adventist Church as well as other 00:07:59.77\00:08:01.61 organizations suffer a sort of persecution 00:08:01.64\00:08:06.32 when the country refuses to recognize them. 00:08:06.35\00:08:08.99 There may be a registration process and some churches 00:08:09.02\00:08:12.18 that are thought well are automatically 00:08:12.21\00:08:14.34 get registered or formally acknowledge 00:08:14.37\00:08:17.82 and on occasion will be not registered. 00:08:17.85\00:08:21.15 Sometimes we've been registered 00:08:21.18\00:08:22.55 in other minor churches like Jehovah-- 00:08:22.58\00:08:25.53 Smaller. Smaller or not. 00:08:25.56\00:08:28.31 What do you think about that? 00:08:28.34\00:08:29.71 Is it important that we be-- that we come up to this 00:08:29.74\00:08:33.54 legal standard or we do what we do regardless? 00:08:33.57\00:08:36.09 Well, it is important depending on the country. 00:08:36.12\00:08:39.00 So for instance we got deregistered in Hungary 00:08:39.03\00:08:41.39 recently and we got registered. 00:08:41.42\00:08:43.04 Unfortunately, if you are not registered 00:08:43.07\00:08:45.80 it's illegal for you to meet as a church. 00:08:45.83\00:08:47.62 It's illegal for you to carry any activities. 00:08:47.65\00:08:50.88 The consequences of being not registered. 00:08:50.91\00:08:52.33 And imagine how difficult it is to evangelize 00:08:52.36\00:08:54.41 and to carry on your mission, 00:08:54.44\00:08:55.88 if even your mere existence is illegal. 00:08:55.91\00:08:58.21 So, I mean, in a perfect world 00:08:58.24\00:09:00.21 you wouldn't have to get registered. 00:09:00.24\00:09:02.05 But the reality is in almost every country 00:09:02.08\00:09:04.23 there is some type of registration process. 00:09:04.26\00:09:06.43 Remind you even in United States, 00:09:06.46\00:09:09.21 while you don't have to be registered to be a church, 00:09:09.24\00:09:11.54 and just a pure local church 00:09:11.57\00:09:13.12 is automatically an exempt organization, 00:09:13.15\00:09:14.69 the Seventh-day Adventist church going back into the 1950s, 00:09:14.72\00:09:18.08 has a tax exemption organizational 00:09:18.11\00:09:19.68 letter from the IRS. 00:09:19.71\00:09:21.38 You could call that a type of governmental registration. 00:09:21.41\00:09:23.99 So, you know there is some requirements to do that 00:09:24.02\00:09:27.80 and I know when I first heard about the church doing that. 00:09:27.83\00:09:29.67 I was like, that's really right. 00:09:29.70\00:09:31.07 So we should be asking the government permission 00:09:31.10\00:09:33.15 you know, to carry on our mission. 00:09:33.18\00:09:34.55 So you had the same thought? Yeah. But when you look-- 00:09:34.58\00:09:35.95 I mean at this stage I am comfortable, 00:09:35.98\00:09:37.35 I think we need to be registered 00:09:37.38\00:09:38.75 because it's a defect persecution when you are not. 00:09:38.78\00:09:41.96 But a lot of people, I think must have 00:09:41.99\00:09:43.56 this sense of ambiguity about it. 00:09:43.59\00:09:45.55 Can you explain about that? 00:09:45.58\00:09:46.99 And in many countries, especially like 00:09:47.02\00:09:48.40 Western-European countries you have to be registered. 00:09:48.43\00:09:50.49 There are certain benefits you get 00:09:50.52\00:09:51.89 and it's a very just sort of administrative process. 00:09:51.92\00:09:53.89 You go down. You fill up the right paperwork, 00:09:53.92\00:09:55.66 everyone gets it. 00:09:55.69\00:09:57.17 Where this reversion money goes to the church? Right. 00:09:57.20\00:10:00.18 But I know that the Lutheran church 00:10:00.21\00:10:02.36 get money in Germany as part of the tax receipts. 00:10:02.39\00:10:05.96 But is it only the Lutheran or all organizations? 00:10:05.99\00:10:08.05 I think other religious organizations do, 00:10:08.08\00:10:09.81 I don't know enough of that in particular, but no, 00:10:09.84\00:10:12.67 in many countries, you know, 00:10:12.70\00:10:14.58 the government will use money to support religion. 00:10:14.61\00:10:17.27 Now we're little uncomfortable with the whole word 00:10:17.30\00:10:18.80 of separation of church and state. 00:10:18.83\00:10:20.20 How many Americans insist? 00:10:20.23\00:10:21.60 But first remembering that primarily 00:10:21.63\00:10:23.09 that's an American legal system, 00:10:23.12\00:10:25.59 we can look to the Bible 00:10:25.62\00:10:26.99 and find a good backup with the Bible. 00:10:27.02\00:10:29.94 You can also show going into the Old Testament, 00:10:29.97\00:10:33.77 a true religion is to be incorporated into the state. 00:10:33.80\00:10:37.82 Where our argument goes 00:10:37.85\00:10:39.25 and I like to see this all the time, 00:10:39.28\00:10:40.65 the safety in a good separation of church and state, 00:10:40.68\00:10:44.96 but it's primarily a constitutional model, isn't it? 00:10:44.99\00:10:47.99 It is. And there's also a model of this whole idea 00:10:48.02\00:10:51.13 that we are separate from the government 00:10:51.16\00:10:54.07 and shouldn't take government benefits 00:10:54.10\00:10:55.47 or take government subsidies, 00:10:55.50\00:10:56.87 is a very American idea even within Adventist Churches, 00:10:56.90\00:10:59.29 other parts in the world in which we do see. 00:10:59.32\00:11:00.69 Well, even in Canada, 00:11:00.72\00:11:02.09 even in the same division, the same church. 00:11:02.12\00:11:03.49 Of course, we end up losing our schools up there 00:11:03.52\00:11:05.23 eventually and of course-- 00:11:05.26\00:11:06.63 Well, we had progress on this that the dynamic is not good, 00:11:06.66\00:11:10.85 and we have lost schools because of that. 00:11:10.88\00:11:12.60 Yeah, but you know and talking about 00:11:12.63\00:11:14.00 these issues of religious liberty, 00:11:14.03\00:11:15.64 you know it can be very difficult 00:11:15.67\00:11:17.13 in knowing how to defend an organization. 00:11:17.16\00:11:19.61 What steps to take? What do you do? 00:11:19.64\00:11:22.14 That we need to defend our church. Right. 00:11:22.17\00:11:24.54 And as a religious organization and knowing 00:11:24.57\00:11:26.63 when to defend it, there is no clear line. 00:11:26.66\00:11:28.85 There is no bright line. 00:11:28.88\00:11:30.36 There is no right answer that's apparent. 00:11:30.39\00:11:32.00 That's why as religious leaders 00:11:32.03\00:11:33.49 and church leaders, we pray about this. 00:11:33.52\00:11:35.36 We see God's guidance and we hope and pray 00:11:35.39\00:11:38.41 that our things will work out ultimately 00:11:38.44\00:11:40.78 in defending His name and defending His church. 00:11:40.81\00:11:43.78 As someone who does more than a fare share of driving, 00:11:43.81\00:11:47.71 since I commute a total of about 150 miles a day to work, 00:11:47.74\00:11:53.47 something I should never have done, 00:11:53.50\00:11:55.19 I can let you I read more than my fresh air of bumper stickers. 00:11:55.22\00:11:59.61 I can't even repeat some of them. 00:11:59.64\00:12:01.17 A lot of them are political, or candidates long gone, 00:12:01.20\00:12:05.10 campaigns long last, but one bumper sticker 00:12:05.13\00:12:08.48 that I see regularly from time to time 00:12:08.51\00:12:10.81 is that very abstract fish shape 00:12:10.84\00:12:15.39 and when I see that I know that that person wants 00:12:15.42\00:12:17.74 to tell me that they are Christian. 00:12:17.77\00:12:20.68 I wish I could say there is a clear correlation 00:12:20.71\00:12:22.98 between the bumper sticker and how the car behaves. 00:12:23.01\00:12:26.13 But I have seen as many cases of road rage 00:12:26.16\00:12:28.91 and just playing traffic obstruction 00:12:28.94\00:12:31.31 with those bumper stickers as any other car. 00:12:31.34\00:12:34.45 And it's reminded me that it's fine into brand yourself, 00:12:34.48\00:12:38.26 sometimes maybe even necessary 00:12:38.29\00:12:40.05 because I would never advocate for a Christian to be secretive. 00:12:40.08\00:12:44.43 You should be very upfront about our faith. 00:12:44.46\00:12:46.74 But the ultimate vindication of our behavior 00:12:46.77\00:12:49.90 is not whether we have the fish sign on your bumper or not. 00:12:49.93\00:12:53.36 It's whether we have a faith prospective inside us 00:12:53.39\00:12:57.14 is correct and we all end up toward God. 00:12:57.17\00:13:00.15 And that in all of our behavior we reflect the behavior, 00:13:00.18\00:13:04.83 the attitudes that God expects of a follower. 00:13:04.86\00:13:08.74 That is the bottom line 00:13:08.77\00:13:10.64 and that is the determiner of the Christian commitment. 00:13:10.67\00:13:15.43 For "Liberty Insider", this is Lincoln Steed. 00:13:15.46\00:13:18.41
