Welcome to The Liberty Insider. This is a program bringing you 00:00:23.25\00:00:26.17 news, views, discussion and opinions on religious liberty 00:00:26.20\00:00:29.55 events around the world starting in the United States. 00:00:29.58\00:00:33.14 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty magazine 00:00:33.18\00:00:36.67 and my guest on this program is Dr. Bert Beach, a religious 00:00:36.71\00:00:41.54 liberty icon for the Seventh- day Adventist Church, recently 00:00:41.58\00:00:46.01 retired or at least admitting retirement but still plenty of 00:00:46.04\00:00:49.43 opinions and knowledge about religious liberty. I want to ask 00:00:49.46\00:00:52.95 you a question that I know relates to what you did for many 00:00:52.99\00:00:56.18 years. Out of our General Conference world headquarters 00:00:56.21\00:00:59.33 the religious liberty department for many years has prepared a 00:00:59.37\00:01:03.19 report every year on pretty much religious liberty concerns 00:01:03.23\00:01:06.58 in many countries; it's aimed to sort of cover the world, 00:01:06.62\00:01:10.85 countries of interest. Do you remember doing that or working 00:01:10.89\00:01:15.09 with that? Well really we started a little 00:01:15.12\00:01:17.49 bit of that, but it's really done by John Graz during his 00:01:17.53\00:01:20.89 administration who really pushed that and he had one or two good 00:01:20.93\00:01:26.97 associates who were able to get the work done and the first 00:01:27.00\00:01:31.28 annual report was rather simplistic a few years ago and 00:01:31.31\00:01:35.59 then the next report was a little better and every year 00:01:35.62\00:01:39.96 it's gotten to be better. It's really now a pretty good solid 00:01:40.00\00:01:44.57 researched report seen from a Seventh-day Adventist view point 00:01:44.60\00:01:49.14 regarding the Seventh-day Adventist church and I think 00:01:49.17\00:01:52.61 it's worthwhile. Because every year the State 00:01:52.64\00:01:54.68 Department puts out a similar report from U.S. national 00:01:54.72\00:01:57.86 interest and just looking generically at religious liberty 00:01:57.89\00:02:01.00 and civil liberties. And now I think it's a valuable 00:02:01.03\00:02:07.03 document. And it can very specifically 00:02:07.06\00:02:10.33 highlight, while we might on this program sort of talk 00:02:10.37\00:02:13.71 broadly. You know you can look at a certain country like a 00:02:13.74\00:02:17.42 couple years ago in India I remember the General Conference 00:02:17.45\00:02:20.83 actually personally investigated Seventh-day Adventist churches 00:02:20.87\00:02:25.83 in northwestern India, I think, that had been attacked by mobs 00:02:25.87\00:02:30.18 and burned and a pastor killed and so on. Well clearly we could 00:02:30.21\00:02:34.49 site that sort of a thing to bring it to the attention not 00:02:34.52\00:02:36.96 just to the world but the Indian government themselves. 00:02:37.00\00:02:39.37 It has a very practical purpose. Let's talk about one item of 00:02:39.41\00:02:44.08 present concern in the Seventh- day Adventist Church. You and I 00:02:44.11\00:02:48.75 were discussing it earlier that just a few days ago our world 00:02:48.79\00:02:52.73 General Conference president put out an urgent call to all 00:02:52.77\00:02:56.61 members to pray for the quick release of a Seventh-day 00:02:56.64\00:03:00.21 Adventist pastor and administrator in Togo who's been 00:03:00.25\00:03:03.75 in prison, not directly for his faith, but likely as a byproduct 00:03:03.79\00:03:08.05 of the faith that he has. He's imprisoned on charges of murder. 00:03:08.09\00:03:12.32 Remember this case with Pastor Montero? 00:03:12.35\00:03:15.43 He's from Cape Verde, an island, a little republic, off the coast 00:03:15.47\00:03:22.95 of Togo, very close to the equator, not far from Togo 00:03:22.98\00:03:27.48 and he's a departmental director in the Union there, the Saielle 00:03:27.52\00:03:32.70 Union which groups the French speaking territories like Togo, 00:03:32.73\00:03:37.37 Lome or whatever the name is now. They change every so often 00:03:37.40\00:03:42.61 and so on and Ivory Coast and so on, these countries together 00:03:42.65\00:03:46.43 and he's a departmental director in there and he was arrested 00:03:46.46\00:03:51.50 recently and another minister accused of being involved in 00:03:51.54\00:03:56.51 blood trafficking and murdering young girls to get the blood for 00:03:56.55\00:04:01.39 some kind of a procedure, nothing to do with Christianity, 00:04:01.42\00:04:08.32 but some religious act or something like that and of 00:04:08.35\00:04:12.20 course no evidence has been found for that. Somebody 00:04:12.23\00:04:16.01 reported it who was in prison himself who has admitted to 00:04:16.05\00:04:21.73 being involved and who had had contacts with our minister who 00:04:21.77\00:04:26.13 had contacted him to try to help him and so on. And then somehow 00:04:26.16\00:04:30.49 he gave the name and so on. So the accusation is there. 00:04:30.52\00:04:33.55 They have no system of bail in that country so our pastor has 00:04:33.59\00:04:37.76 now been in prison for six months or more and it could be 00:04:37.79\00:04:42.04 another six months before they have the trial. Of course, you 00:04:42.08\00:04:46.30 wonder to what extent the system is organized properly, 00:04:46.33\00:04:50.56 that there's no bribery system or anything like that and so 00:04:50.60\00:04:54.40 nothing has happened even though the police have admitted 00:04:54.43\00:04:58.20 that they have no evidence against him at all. 00:04:58.23\00:05:00.33 Societally or socially it's a rather hazardous environment for 00:05:00.37\00:05:06.25 any Christian because I think there are six million people in 00:05:06.29\00:05:10.72 Togo, about six or seven thousand Seventh-day Adventists. 00:05:10.75\00:05:14.65 But Christians are a distinct minority, I mean a very small 00:05:14.68\00:05:18.90 minority and Animism is still the prevailing viewpoint. 00:05:18.94\00:05:23.09 It's an underdeveloped country. It doesn't mean they have no 00:05:23.13\00:05:25.55 sense of justice. They've inherited the French justice 00:05:25.58\00:05:29.22 system. But clearly culturally and their history would sort of, 00:05:29.26\00:05:36.51 in my view, lead them to probably go a little slow on 00:05:36.54\00:05:40.50 administering justice to someone from outside and an alien 00:05:40.54\00:05:44.34 religious viewpoint. And this is where I think a lot of prejudice 00:05:44.38\00:05:47.64 kicks in even though the accusation is not because of his 00:05:47.67\00:05:51.44 faith. I know I've been interested in 00:05:51.47\00:05:53.32 Togo because I conducted myself about 25 years or was it 30 00:05:53.36\00:05:58.86 years ago, a first evangelistic campaign in Togo in French and 00:05:58.89\00:06:03.49 so I was involved there. I met the president of the country and 00:06:03.53\00:06:07.38 had a nice meeting with him. It was very interesting because 00:06:07.42\00:06:11.34 usually these presidents in Africa and other countries, they 00:06:11.37\00:06:14.77 have so many people making demands on them asking for this 00:06:14.80\00:06:18.54 and asking for that. So we met with the president and after a 00:06:18.58\00:06:22.22 hello and a few greetings he said, now what can I do for 00:06:22.25\00:06:25.72 you? And I told him well we're not here to ask for anything. 00:06:25.76\00:06:29.04 We're just here to come to meet you and tell you how much we 00:06:29.07\00:06:32.20 appreciate the liberty we enjoy. Our church had just started 00:06:32.23\00:06:35.53 work about three or four years before in the country. It was a 00:06:35.56\00:06:39.40 new church and had very few members, just starting, and we 00:06:39.43\00:06:42.90 just want to tell you how much we appreciate being able to be 00:06:42.93\00:06:46.25 here and he just relaxed and we met there another half hour of 00:06:46.28\00:06:49.68 just talking with him. It's his son who is now the president. 00:06:49.71\00:06:52.86 I wish I could have gone down there and talked to him about 00:06:52.90\00:06:56.02 his father. We don't have time to get 00:06:56.05\00:06:57.59 through all of the history... 00:06:57.62\00:06:59.00 But I'm retired now... of the constitutional crisis/ 00:06:59.04\00:07:02.64 coup of the first degree when a prime minister that should have 00:07:02.68\00:07:06.64 inherited, his plane was kept circling. Do you know the story? 00:07:06.67\00:07:10.60 His plane was kept circling, refused to land and they 00:07:10.63\00:07:12.78 installed the son instead. 00:07:12.81\00:07:16.00 Yeah, it's a sad situation because in Togo our church had a 00:07:16.04\00:07:20.13 good reputation. When I was there I had pastors of other 00:07:20.16\00:07:24.18 churches coming to my meetings and we had very good relations; 00:07:24.22\00:07:27.84 even a Catholic priest was there. I gave a lecture one 00:07:27.87\00:07:31.25 evening on the Virgin Mary and how we looked at it and I asked 00:07:31.29\00:07:34.57 him if I had said anything that offended him. He said no. 00:07:34.60\00:07:37.44 I talked about how good a lady she was and you know that God 00:07:37.47\00:07:40.28 had selected her to be the mother of Jesus and so forth 00:07:40.31\00:07:44.88 which was a great acknowledgment of her. 00:07:44.92\00:07:48.92 Well the angel said, Most favored among women are you. 00:07:48.95\00:07:52.27 Exactly and so on. So am surprised to see that in Togo 00:07:52.31\00:07:55.56 they can't solve the problem quickly. It just seems to take 00:07:55.59\00:07:58.86 time and it's very discouraging in a way to see a situation like 00:07:58.90\00:08:02.85 that for our church when there is no evidence of anything being 00:08:02.88\00:08:06.79 committed. So we certainly are praying fervently. 00:08:06.83\00:08:10.86 You know we presume him innocent. There's no evidence 00:08:10.89\00:08:16.29 that we see or know about that there's anything other than 00:08:16.32\00:08:19.22 innocence but we certainly want justice to work quickly because 00:08:19.26\00:08:22.12 it's injustice to be kept languishing in the jail. 00:08:22.15\00:08:24.94 And prisons in that part of the work are not in the class of 00:08:24.97\00:08:29.42 Marriott Hotels. Well they're not Marriott Hotels 00:08:29.46\00:08:31.73 either here but yes in a third world country particularly it 00:08:31.77\00:08:36.15 can be more like it was in medieval or late reformation 00:08:36.18\00:08:40.49 Europe where the family members often have to feed the prisoner 00:08:40.53\00:08:44.47 All the family members are supposed to bring the meals 00:08:44.50\00:08:48.30 It's a very sad situation. I'm very unhappy about this 00:08:48.33\00:08:52.06 situation and I sure hope that the Lord will somehow intervene 00:08:52.09\00:08:55.83 and solve this problem quickly because it's not right the way 00:08:55.87\00:08:59.57 it is now. It puts me to mind of a story 00:08:59.60\00:09:02.29 that just once or twice in the last few years I've mentioned 00:09:02.32\00:09:07.26 on this program. But around 1999 or 2000 in Sri Lanka, a country 00:09:07.30\00:09:12.20 that then was undergoing a severe and protracted civil war, 00:09:12.24\00:09:16.22 in one of our schools a Tamil pastor, of course under 00:09:16.26\00:09:23.01 suspicion because they were the rebels that were challenging 00:09:23.05\00:09:27.49 the central government. A student came along, another 00:09:27.53\00:09:30.88 Tamil student who had some connections to the Tamil tiger 00:09:30.92\00:09:34.62 gorillas and on that alone the government arrested him and 00:09:34.65\00:09:38.80 him of terrorism and this was before 2001, so he was on a 00:09:38.83\00:09:42.15 terrorist charge, a capital charge, he could have been 00:09:42.19\00:09:45.63 executed on it. And he languished I think it was over a 00:09:45.67\00:09:49.04 year in prison with no immediate expectation of release. In fact, 00:09:49.08\00:09:53.50 we were expecting that perhaps he'd be convicted and hanged 00:09:53.54\00:09:57.05 promptly. And it was only after protracted period, as we're 00:09:57.08\00:10:01.24 going through with the Pastor in Togo, that he was suddenly 00:10:01.28\00:10:05.32 released. He was spirited out of the country, sent to Canada 00:10:05.35\00:10:09.37 and he renewed his calling as a minister of religion. But that 00:10:09.41\00:10:13.22 was very sobering to me to meet him, to hear him tell what 00:10:13.25\00:10:16.99 happened when he was in jail in incredible conditions. We don't 00:10:17.03\00:10:21.40 know about Pastor Montero in Togo. He was ruffed up a little 00:10:21.43\00:10:24.79 bit when he was first arrested because of the nature of the 00:10:24.82\00:10:28.06 crime I think. But it's certainly not a pleasant prison. 00:10:28.09\00:10:32.49 But Pastor Alexander told me over those many months almost 00:10:32.53\00:10:36.86 every day or two he was hung up by his ankles, he was beaten for 00:10:36.89\00:10:41.46 prolonged periods with sticks on the soles of his feet to cripple 00:10:41.49\00:10:45.42 him but no marks and then they put a book on his head and would 00:10:45.46\00:10:49.51 beat with cudgels on the book to give him brain damage. And he 00:10:49.55\00:10:53.48 said it affected his memory, his eyesight and so on. You know 00:10:53.52\00:10:58.80 there's almost well Satanic methods employed with a lot of 00:10:58.84\00:11:04.09 detainees around the world. Oh it's terrible. 00:11:04.12\00:11:08.03 But again providentially, well we hope providentially with 00:11:08.06\00:11:12.49 Montero; with Alexander he was providentially released and he 00:11:12.52\00:11:16.91 told me, this is the most amazing thing in it. I don't 00:11:16.95\00:11:19.73 know if you remember. He said that he believed that it was the 00:11:19.77\00:11:23.37 Lord's will that he be in prison because in prison he was able 00:11:23.40\00:11:27.02 to raise up a company of about 60 people meeting every Sabbath 00:11:27.06\00:11:30.64 and he said he didn't want to be released, but then 00:11:30.68\00:11:34.03 providentially when he was released another pastor was 00:11:34.06\00:11:37.34 arrested and he was able to continue caring for that prison 00:11:37.38\00:11:40.04 flock. Many times when a pastor gets 00:11:40.07\00:11:43.97 arrested and goes to prison it's providential. 00:11:44.01\00:11:46.36 Well what is that song that says God moves in mysterious ways 00:11:46.40\00:11:50.90 his wonders to perform. So God works through all situations 00:11:50.94\00:11:55.41 Good can come out of evil. 00:11:55.45\00:11:56.82 Yeah, I don't think God wants anybody imprisoned but he will 00:11:56.85\00:12:00.40 work good in any situation. We certainly are praying for 00:12:00.43\00:12:04.29 Pastor Montero. But these countries of concern are 00:12:04.33\00:12:08.39 are multiplying aren't they? Can you remember any other cases 00:12:08.42\00:12:13.54 where we had difficulties through the years? 00:12:13.58\00:12:16.47 They don't come to mind just recently. Of course we have had 00:12:16.51\00:12:20.10 under communism we had people but that's a long time ago now. 00:12:20.13\00:12:24.87 In eastern Europe they had problems, were imprisoned. 00:12:24.90\00:12:30.04 But one thing I think is very interesting. Our church has 00:12:30.08\00:12:34.67 sometimes been accused by some of its enemies of being an 00:12:34.70\00:12:39.26 American church, CIA maybe infiltrated and so forth. 00:12:39.29\00:12:43.84 I remember our church in Nicaragua some years ago was 00:12:43.87\00:12:48.38 closed down by the government for, I think it was a matter 00:12:48.42\00:12:52.74 of weeks and the schools were taken over, the conference 00:12:52.78\00:12:56.74 office and they were saying well America... It was under the 00:12:56.77\00:13:00.73 Sandinista regime back in those days... that the church was part 00:13:00.76\00:13:04.68 of the CIA system. But God intervened through the 00:13:04.72\00:13:10.29 ambassador in Washington. 00:13:10.32\00:13:11.69 We need to talk a little bit more about that, how we're able 00:13:11.72\00:13:15.82 to have UN and diplomatic contacts to pass on the word of 00:13:15.86\00:13:20.03 some of these problems. We'll be back after a short break to 00:13:20.07\00:13:23.80 continue this discussion of countries of interest. 00:13:23.83\00:13:26.66
