Well, we're back after a short break 00:00:06.04\00:00:07.90 and now we're ready to continue our discussion 00:00:07.93\00:00:10.76 on the emergence of the Roman Catholic Church 00:00:10.79\00:00:13.32 as a force for Religious Freedom, which is good. 00:00:13.35\00:00:16.16 But we're talking about some of the backdrop to that. 00:00:16.19\00:00:18.48 And in the break, you and I were talking 00:00:18.51\00:00:20.85 about some of the goings on in the Vatican state 00:00:20.88\00:00:26.78 and most recently, I think it was the secretary to the pope 00:00:26.81\00:00:29.84 spilled some documents that should've been kept secret 00:00:29.87\00:00:33.19 and he was arreste dand imprisoned in Vatican City. 00:00:33.22\00:00:36.04 So they have a jail in those few little acres. 00:00:36.07\00:00:39.35 Well, they have the--the pope has the Swiss guard there 00:00:39.38\00:00:43.58 that I like to meet with them 00:00:43.61\00:00:45.10 when I stayed a few days in the Vatican 00:00:45.13\00:00:47.53 as I was attending a meeting in Rome 00:00:47.56\00:00:49.60 and they asked me to be an advisor 00:00:49.63\00:00:52.11 representing the Christian World Communions. 00:00:52.14\00:00:54.15 So I was staying inside the Vatican 00:00:54.18\00:00:56.39 and so I had to-- would go there 00:00:56.42\00:00:58.37 and the Swiss Guards would salute me-- Get to know you. 00:00:58.40\00:01:00.54 Command and all that and I would talk to them 00:01:00.57\00:01:02.57 in the Swiss dialect because I grew up in Switzerland 00:01:02.60\00:01:05.24 so I can speak this Swiss German dialect 00:01:05.27\00:01:07.43 and so we had a good time there 00:01:07.46\00:01:09.02 talking with some of these people. 00:01:09.05\00:01:10.87 And so it's an interesting life. 00:01:10.90\00:01:12.83 The Catholic Church is a very powerful church obviously 00:01:12.86\00:01:16.62 in so many countries and so influential 00:01:16.65\00:01:19.93 in the government and many activities 00:01:19.96\00:01:22.07 around the world in diplomacy. 00:01:22.10\00:01:23.72 There's no doubt it has even a status at the UN 00:01:23.75\00:01:27.18 as a non-member government, not a member government 00:01:27.21\00:01:31.00 but non-member government. 00:01:31.03\00:01:32.40 I picked up a Roman Catholic publication the other day, 00:01:32.43\00:01:36.73 official but not mainstream, 00:01:36.76\00:01:39.33 and they were questioning the Vatican status 00:01:39.36\00:01:42.58 in the United Nations that it was improper. 00:01:42.61\00:01:45.71 Because the other churches don't have a status. Right. 00:01:45.74\00:01:48.19 They're there as non-government organizations. NGOs.-- 00:01:48.22\00:01:51.54 General Conference Seventh-day Adventist 00:01:51.57\00:01:53.11 has a status at the UN with ECOSOC and so forth. 00:01:53.14\00:01:56.77 And we can go to meetings, 00:01:56.80\00:01:58.17 make statements-- but we're there as a NGO, 00:01:58.20\00:02:02.16 non-government organization. 00:02:02.19\00:02:03.56 What does ECOSOC stand for? 00:02:03.59\00:02:05.02 Pardon me? ECOSOC? 00:02:05.05\00:02:06.58 ECOSOC, the Economic and Social Council of UN. 00:02:06.61\00:02:11.38 And it's a very important body 00:02:11.41\00:02:14.07 because it deals with Religious Liberty issues and all that. 00:02:14.10\00:02:17.91 There's ECOSOC, then there's the World Court, 00:02:17.94\00:02:21.45 and then there's the, what do they call now, 00:02:21.48\00:02:25.99 I can't even think whether US has the right to veto on the-- 00:02:26.02\00:02:30.65 Oh, Security Council. Security Council, that's it. 00:02:30.68\00:02:33.02 Now, of course, you're probably troubling 00:02:33.05\00:02:34.46 some of our viewers who-- 00:02:34.49\00:02:35.86 As I get older, my memory sometimes skips words. 00:02:35.89\00:02:39.00 Some of our viewers are probably troubled 00:02:39.03\00:02:40.58 those that write me regularly telling about what UN vehicles 00:02:40.61\00:02:44.64 in store is ready to take over the US 00:02:44.67\00:02:47.14 but this is no threat to US governance 00:02:47.17\00:02:49.07 so it all happens in New York and under American sponsorship. 00:02:49.10\00:02:53.72 But there's an attempt isn't there to involve 00:02:53.75\00:02:56.53 all the different countries on any different practical levels? 00:02:56.56\00:02:59.29 It's not just sitting there talking fun. 00:02:59.32\00:03:02.24 There are actual programs 00:03:02.27\00:03:04.00 implementing public and social policy-- 00:03:04.03\00:03:06.76 Now I'm happy that the Catholic Church 00:03:06.79\00:03:09.52 is taking a great interest in Religious Liberty 00:03:09.55\00:03:12.92 and so long as they support Religious Liberty 00:03:12.95\00:03:15.73 for all which is what they say, 00:03:15.76\00:03:18.24 they believe, I think that will be helpful. 00:03:18.27\00:03:21.04 Of course, we expect in the future things 00:03:21.07\00:03:24.06 can change. Yeah. 00:03:24.09\00:03:25.46 The pendulum can swing in a different direction. 00:03:25.49\00:03:27.99 I mean, you realize when we had the events of 9/11... 00:03:28.02\00:03:34.12 we took steps in United States 00:03:36.16\00:03:38.79 to control many things we didn't before. 00:03:38.82\00:03:40.91 I remember when I first visited the Soviet Union-- 00:03:40.94\00:03:42.52 Absolutely, civil liberties were-- 00:03:42.55\00:03:43.92 Back in the '60s and the '70s, 00:03:43.95\00:03:46.05 when it was still under heavy communism and all that, 00:03:46.08\00:03:49.02 I was very upset with all the controls. 00:03:49.05\00:03:52.09 They would control you at the desk where you register, 00:03:52.12\00:03:56.58 then you're controlled at another desk, 00:03:56.61\00:03:58.45 and then controlled at another-- 00:03:58.48\00:03:59.85 and then just as you walk down to the plane, 00:03:59.88\00:04:01.50 they would control you again and if you want-- 00:04:01.53\00:04:02.90 And that's what we did now, isn't it? 00:04:02.93\00:04:04.30 And if you wanted to take a train at the train station, 00:04:04.33\00:04:07.68 you had to show your passport and visa 00:04:07.71\00:04:10.36 and everything to show to get on the train. 00:04:10.39\00:04:12.40 I said what a repressive regime. 00:04:12.43\00:04:14.37 Well, now when I want to get on the plane, 00:04:14.40\00:04:16.66 I have to show my passport 00:04:16.69\00:04:19.25 or my driver's license and so forth. 00:04:19.28\00:04:21.84 We have these controls, why? 00:04:21.87\00:04:23.32 Because there is a danger in the country. There is a-- 00:04:23.35\00:04:28.39 But we need to be careful 00:04:28.42\00:04:29.79 because in many countries over many years, 00:04:29.82\00:04:32.68 an emergency has been shown to precipitate 00:04:32.71\00:04:35.42 some of the civil liberty hazards-- Exactly. 00:04:35.45\00:04:38.89 And sometimes in order to have security, 00:04:38.92\00:04:43.06 people are willing to give up some liberties. 00:04:43.09\00:04:44.97 And that's a very sad thing. 00:04:45.00\00:04:46.37 Since 9/11, we've had a cavalcade of people stand up, 00:04:46.40\00:04:49.40 "I'll give away any liberty for security." 00:04:49.43\00:04:51.97 And, you know, it's a puerile sort of a discussion. 00:04:52.00\00:04:53.69 I mean, if you walk through the streets in our country, 00:04:53.72\00:04:57.64 there are cameras everywhere taking pictures of you. 00:04:57.67\00:05:01.79 You go into stores. You come out of the store. 00:05:01.82\00:05:05.65 You go into cinema, I understand, 00:05:05.68\00:05:07.51 you come out and they have-- if something happens, 00:05:07.54\00:05:11.68 during something is stolen, 00:05:11.71\00:05:13.19 they have pictures of people that were there. 00:05:13.22\00:05:14.76 And the technology has handed that ability 00:05:14.79\00:05:16.79 to those in control. 00:05:16.82\00:05:19.21 They've not done it with a sinister purpose. 00:05:19.24\00:05:21.25 But I believe it, it is sinister that any government 00:05:21.28\00:05:24.83 has the ability to sift through visual and computer reality 00:05:24.86\00:05:29.28 because all the emails 00:05:29.31\00:05:30.84 and other communications are stored long term. 00:05:30.87\00:05:33.57 They don't vanish into thin air. Yeah. Now we have terrorism. 00:05:33.60\00:05:36.21 People imagine that they're sitting quietly at home 00:05:36.24\00:05:38.68 and doing something and no one knows about. 00:05:38.71\00:05:40.60 All of that information is kept by the government 00:05:40.63\00:05:43.60 and permanently and they can then run a check with you. 00:05:43.63\00:05:48.24 And someone made an interesting comment recently. 00:05:48.27\00:05:50.25 They say, "Why should I worry? 00:05:50.28\00:05:52.16 I'm doing nothing wrong." 00:05:52.19\00:05:53.93 And a person that was working with National Security 00:05:53.96\00:05:56.96 made an interesting comment. 00:05:56.99\00:05:58.42 He said, "Remember, he said, 00:05:58.45\00:06:00.71 you are not the one that defines what is wrong. 00:06:00.74\00:06:04.50 The government will define it or a government." 00:06:04.53\00:06:06.61 So their definition could still implicate you 00:06:06.64\00:06:11.32 in something that you had no idea about. 00:06:11.35\00:06:13.17 Yeah, but it could happen. 00:06:13.20\00:06:14.85 And I'm trying to say when there is terrorism, 00:06:14.88\00:06:18.07 obviously-- There's legitimate-- 00:06:18.10\00:06:19.84 I don't want to be on a plane flying over the Atlantic 00:06:19.87\00:06:23.27 and find myself blown into the air and disappear, 00:06:23.30\00:06:26.91 nobody ever heard of you again and so forth. 00:06:26.94\00:06:29.40 I mean, you accept certain controls. 00:06:29.43\00:06:32.43 But also when you accept the controls, 00:06:32.46\00:06:36.06 you have to know 00:06:36.09\00:06:37.46 that you need to control the controllers. Right. 00:06:37.49\00:06:41.27 So in an open democratic society, 00:06:41.30\00:06:45.33 it needs to be open. 00:06:45.36\00:06:46.73 There needs to be transparency. 00:06:46.76\00:06:48.13 There needs to be responsibility. 00:06:48.16\00:06:49.57 And this is not a Religious Liberty concern 00:06:49.60\00:06:51.89 but it's a civil liberty concern that impacts religion. 00:06:51.92\00:06:54.71 Well, yeah, but Religious Liberty 00:06:54.74\00:06:56.43 and civil liberty are very closely tied together. 00:06:56.46\00:06:59.05 Well, not closely, they're inseparable. 00:06:59.08\00:07:02.59 One's affected, the other is affected. 00:07:02.62\00:07:04.97 And I think that in a general sense, 00:07:05.00\00:07:07.73 is a significant statement. 00:07:07.76\00:07:09.85 In this post 9/11 period 00:07:09.88\00:07:11.54 where there's legitimate needs to monitor, 00:07:11.57\00:07:14.46 we can presume that Religious Liberty 00:07:14.49\00:07:18.61 has the shadow of a threat hanging over it. 00:07:18.64\00:07:20.67 Yeah, yeah, and civil liberties. 00:07:20.70\00:07:23.94 Of course, yes. 00:07:23.97\00:07:25.34 Because I'm sure that attacks against Religious Liberty 00:07:25.37\00:07:29.94 will probably start with civil liberties attack. 00:07:29.97\00:07:34.35 I mean, the two things are so close together that, 00:07:34.38\00:07:37.49 you know, sometime, it may be coming a tangential affect 00:07:37.52\00:07:42.40 and you don't even notice that 00:07:42.43\00:07:43.80 until it affects your Religious Liberty-- 00:07:43.83\00:07:45.20 Well, I'm sure you noticed that in the years 00:07:45.23\00:07:46.60 you were working with Religious Liberty 00:07:46.63\00:07:48.00 that in some countries, you have cases where, 00:07:48.03\00:07:51.17 you know, Hindus might burn a Muslim village 00:07:51.20\00:07:53.51 and that sort of stuff. 00:07:53.54\00:07:54.91 But most of the modern persecution start subtly. 00:07:54.94\00:07:59.63 There might be zoning issues or employment issues 00:07:59.66\00:08:03.76 but behind it lies the religious prejudice 00:08:03.79\00:08:05.90 or a negative agenda right? Well, and also-- 00:08:05.93\00:08:08.13 So it doesn't always present as just I'm doing this 00:08:08.16\00:08:10.90 because I don't like your religion. 00:08:10.93\00:08:12.48 And, therefore, I pointed out earlier 00:08:12.51\00:08:14.83 and I think it was another program we had together 00:08:14.86\00:08:17.87 that it's all right 00:08:17.90\00:08:21.69 to have separation of church and state. 00:08:21.72\00:08:23.29 And it's a good thing. 00:08:23.32\00:08:24.88 But if it's a hateful or a controlling separation 00:08:24.91\00:08:31.31 where the government wants separation 00:08:31.34\00:08:33.54 in order to control the church 00:08:33.57\00:08:35.06 so that the church can't control the state, 00:08:35.09\00:08:38.19 you have a danger situation that can develop. Absolutely. 00:08:38.22\00:08:40.85 And as many of the framers of the US constitution 00:08:40.88\00:08:44.20 and those pioneers pointed out that the good governance 00:08:44.23\00:08:48.96 depends on a population with morality 00:08:48.99\00:08:52.23 and religious sentiments. Exactly. 00:08:52.26\00:08:54.17 So if they were a secular group of people 00:08:54.20\00:08:56.95 with personal antagonism to religion, 00:08:56.98\00:08:59.22 separation of church and state also 00:08:59.25\00:09:01.14 from the citizenry point of view would be not good-- 00:09:01.17\00:09:03.35 May be very dangerous. Yeah. 00:09:03.38\00:09:05.60 Or at least negative. 00:09:05.63\00:09:08.15 I think you stated it very well. 00:09:08.18\00:09:09.69 We can be happy that in our age post reformation 00:09:09.72\00:09:14.14 and many years on from the inquisition, 00:09:14.17\00:09:16.82 the Roman Catholic Church seems to have gotten the light 00:09:16.85\00:09:19.64 in many years and is forging ahead 00:09:19.67\00:09:21.90 and showing a leadership role on Religious Liberty. 00:09:21.93\00:09:24.11 Well, I'm willing to welcome the support of everybody 00:09:24.14\00:09:29.48 who wants to support Religious Liberty. 00:09:29.51\00:09:31.97 But I want to also make sure 00:09:32.00\00:09:35.34 that I'm supporting Religious Liberty 00:09:35.37\00:09:36.87 for everyone not only for your own interest. 00:09:36.90\00:09:40.22 I think it's a very short-minded--short sighted 00:09:40.25\00:09:44.00 rather view for a Seventh-day Adventist to say, 00:09:44.03\00:09:47.27 "Well, I want Religious Liberty, so I can keep the Sabbath. 00:09:47.30\00:09:50.45 But I don't care about the Religious Liberty 00:09:50.48\00:09:51.94 of those who want to keep Sunday." 00:09:51.97\00:09:53.62 I think Religious Liberty is for everyone. 00:09:53.65\00:09:55.60 It needs to be broad based. 00:09:55.63\00:09:57.00 It needs to be broad based and broadly supported 00:09:57.03\00:09:59.99 and open to everyone. 00:10:00.02\00:10:01.68 So I like to say that we as Seventh-day Adventists, 00:10:01.71\00:10:04.83 we practice Religious Liberty 00:10:04.86\00:10:06.40 in the Religious Liberty department. 00:10:06.43\00:10:08.37 And in the International Religious Liberty Association 00:10:08.40\00:10:11.12 that we have, we practice Religious Liberty 00:10:11.15\00:10:14.17 for everyone not just for Seventh-day Adventists. 00:10:14.20\00:10:17.52 We want to see every single religion in the world, 00:10:17.55\00:10:21.21 be it in the United States, be it over in Indonesia, 00:10:21.24\00:10:24.89 wherever it might be, 00:10:24.92\00:10:26.29 we want them to have full Religious Liberty. 00:10:26.32\00:10:29.48 Northern Island has some of the most unfortunate suburbs 00:10:31.69\00:10:35.20 in the Western Christian world. 00:10:35.23\00:10:37.95 The antagonisms of the reformation 00:10:37.98\00:10:40.61 and of the wars of religion 00:10:40.64\00:10:42.69 that followed are played out there daily 00:10:42.72\00:10:45.05 where Protestants and Catholic both demonize each other. 00:10:45.08\00:10:49.73 That's very unfortunate because it's worth remembering 00:10:49.76\00:10:52.85 that reformers like Martin Luther 00:10:52.88\00:10:55.51 in particular were Roman Catholics 00:10:55.54\00:10:58.73 and they brought a breath of fresh air in Christian charity 00:10:58.76\00:11:02.80 to a complicated situation. 00:11:02.83\00:11:04.20 It's worth remembering as we discussed 00:11:04.75\00:11:07.05 at some length on this program that Vatican II 00:11:07.08\00:11:10.61 brought a breath of fresh air to Roman Catholicism. 00:11:10.64\00:11:14.02 It certainly did not change the underlying dynamic 00:11:14.05\00:11:16.87 that Protestants found so troubling. 00:11:16.90\00:11:19.61 But on a human level, it allowed God's spirit to move. 00:11:19.64\00:11:23.32 It allowed principles in particular of religious freedom 00:11:23.35\00:11:27.22 to be more broadly understood 00:11:27.25\00:11:29.56 and all who stand for Religious Liberty 00:11:29.59\00:11:32.72 must accept that Roman Catholicism 00:11:32.75\00:11:35.13 is now speaking correctly on the general topic 00:11:35.16\00:11:39.46 and unfortunately recognize that many Roman Catholics 00:11:39.49\00:11:42.95 as well as Protestants are persecuted around the world 00:11:42.98\00:11:46.19 and we would encourage them to remain true 00:11:46.22\00:11:49.68 to a gospel commission and Christian charity 00:11:49.71\00:11:53.86 with love that applies to all people 00:11:53.89\00:11:56.75 so that we can defend Religious Liberty 00:11:56.78\00:11:59.21 for all people, for all time indeed until God comes and says, 00:11:59.24\00:12:05.01 "Time no longer, come home to My Kingdom." 00:12:05.04\00:12:08.25 For "Liberty Insider," this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:10.57\00:12:14.97
