Welcome back to the "Liberty Insider". 00:00:06.16\00:00:07.88 Before the break, 00:00:07.91\00:00:09.47 we were restraining ourselves from coming to blows over 00:00:09.50\00:00:12.34 discussing debates within the church. 00:00:12.37\00:00:15.28 Now we would--that worked up, but these are the ones, 00:00:15.31\00:00:18.76 you know, we spoke about conflicts 00:00:18.79\00:00:20.98 between Islam and Christianity that can get hard at times, 00:00:21.01\00:00:23.40 but when you really look at church history, 00:00:23.43\00:00:25.44 the most severe fights will be within a church. Right. 00:00:25.47\00:00:29.45 Even the Roman Catholic Church itself. 00:00:29.48\00:00:31.37 It reserved its real venom in its time of power 00:00:31.40\00:00:34.61 for the heretic within. Correct. 00:00:34.64\00:00:37.38 So it can get very emotional quickly. 00:00:37.41\00:00:39.57 And at the moment the Protestant churches in North America, 00:00:39.60\00:00:43.41 they are arguing of within the church of marrying-- 00:00:43.44\00:00:49.46 gay marriages, ordaining gay priests. 00:00:49.49\00:00:52.69 What are some of the other things? 00:00:52.72\00:00:54.35 That's a good starter, isn't it? 00:00:54.38\00:00:58.55 I'll enlarge on that story 00:00:58.58\00:00:59.95 that I told you about a phone call from someone that said 00:00:59.98\00:01:02.32 that their membership was being threatened 00:01:02.35\00:01:05.11 if they persisted in this youth organization. 00:01:05.14\00:01:07.54 I checked further and I found a local church-- 00:01:07.57\00:01:14.66 headquarters not just the church pastor 00:01:14.69\00:01:17.12 had issued a similar edict 00:01:17.15\00:01:18.87 threatening members if they persisted. 00:01:18.90\00:01:21.58 I went further and I found that the next rung up, 00:01:21.61\00:01:24.02 had actually taken an action 00:01:24.05\00:01:26.36 against this independent organization, 00:01:26.39\00:01:30.02 well, it wasn't an organization. 00:01:30.05\00:01:31.42 It was an independent grouping of church members, 00:01:31.45\00:01:34.42 not doing anything wrong 00:01:34.45\00:01:35.82 but it seemed that they didn't like 00:01:35.85\00:01:37.22 that the structure was outside their control. 00:01:37.25\00:01:40.93 Now what's an individual to do? 00:01:40.96\00:01:43.50 Should a church member 00:01:43.53\00:01:45.15 cease to associate with other good Adventists 00:01:45.18\00:01:48.12 in an environment that had been called wrong by the organization 00:01:48.15\00:01:53.99 or should they continue to meet. 00:01:54.02\00:01:55.77 And then how should they relate 00:01:55.80\00:01:57.97 when if its made to remove their membership. 00:01:58.00\00:02:00.65 I think that something like that in essence 00:02:00.68\00:02:03.05 would have to be come down to the individual. 00:02:03.08\00:02:05.99 In other words whatever religious body it is, 00:02:06.02\00:02:08.80 if you've got your central structure 00:02:08.83\00:02:10.58 that we could look at as your mainline body 00:02:10.61\00:02:13.69 and then you've got supporting institutions related to that. 00:02:13.72\00:02:17.64 And, you know, we could-- putting in practical terms 00:02:17.67\00:02:19.89 you could refer to the Catholic church with the different nuns 00:02:19.92\00:02:23.96 and their work in charity relief work 00:02:23.99\00:02:25.94 if they're supportive of contraceptive views 00:02:25.97\00:02:29.23 to try and diminish the number of children that are born, 00:02:29.26\00:02:31.98 that are malnourished, and hungry, in poverty 00:02:32.01\00:02:34.94 contrary to the church's teachings 00:02:34.97\00:02:36.40 or you could take it within the Adventist church 00:02:36.43\00:02:39.02 relating to supporting ministries 00:02:39.05\00:02:40.70 that may have some views that are little bit divergent 00:02:40.73\00:02:43.74 or different from the main body, across the way going to imply. 00:02:43.77\00:02:46.47 And in essence I think that the individual church member 00:02:46.50\00:02:50.07 would need to take the time to wait out and say, 00:02:50.10\00:02:52.71 "Do I really have the conviction 00:02:52.74\00:02:54.53 that the supporting institution-- 00:02:54.56\00:02:56.87 well, I'm not contrary to the main body of the church, 00:02:56.90\00:02:58.83 but at least divergent on the few things, 00:02:58.86\00:03:00.69 is that more important to me to be aligned up 00:03:00.72\00:03:02.95 and associated with them than with the main body?" 00:03:02.98\00:03:05.96 It's a good commonsense-- 00:03:05.99\00:03:07.36 Therefore face the possibility 00:03:07.39\00:03:09.56 of losing my membership with the main body, 00:03:09.59\00:03:11.54 but still supporting the supporting ministry. 00:03:11.57\00:03:13.14 And writing to early Adventist Ellen White, 00:03:13.17\00:03:16.02 pioneer as well as a visionary did say, 00:03:16.05\00:03:20.08 she didn't spell out why, 00:03:20.11\00:03:21.48 but for some of these sort of reasons she said, 00:03:21.51\00:03:23.54 "Some people may have to make their way to the kingdom 00:03:23.57\00:03:26.07 outside the organization." 00:03:26.10\00:03:27.99 It's most regrettable when it happens, 00:03:28.02\00:03:29.99 but the issue is not narrowly speaking church membership. 00:03:30.02\00:03:34.35 If you're talking about member of any Christian church, 00:03:34.38\00:03:37.18 the issue should be salvation, moral integrity. Correct. 00:03:37.21\00:03:41.06 And even if I thought I was being horribly wrong, 00:03:41.09\00:03:45.98 I don't think it would be right 00:03:46.01\00:03:47.38 or consistent with my Christian commitment 00:03:47.41\00:03:49.27 to try to drag my organization down to prove my point. Correct. 00:03:49.30\00:03:54.47 And, you know, I think back to Martin Luther, 00:03:54.50\00:03:56.74 we bring out the Catholic Church a lot 00:03:56.77\00:03:58.20 because your studies are being there. 00:03:58.23\00:03:59.63 But, you know, my reading of Martin Luther 00:03:59.66\00:04:01.76 is he didn't necessarily intend to leave the church immediately. 00:04:01.79\00:04:06.41 He saw himself as straightening-- 00:04:06.44\00:04:08.95 Certainly to help the church to reform. 00:04:08.98\00:04:10.35 Helping it a few times. 00:04:10.38\00:04:11.89 He got pushed till the end 00:04:11.92\00:04:14.05 that was the only moral conclusion for him. 00:04:14.08\00:04:17.51 This entity would not see the point that he was raising. 00:04:17.54\00:04:22.01 So, you know, he essentially became an enemy of the church, 00:04:22.04\00:04:25.56 but I think he took a moral cause to go his own way 00:04:25.59\00:04:29.90 and in essence found the Lutheran church. 00:04:29.93\00:04:33.68 In this dynamic field, the very important thing 00:04:33.71\00:04:36.59 to recognize the historical differences. 00:04:36.62\00:04:39.24 For Luther, it was the issue of eternal salvation. 00:04:39.27\00:04:43.00 How is one saved, whether it's by grace 00:04:43.03\00:04:45.47 apart from the works that the church was teaching-- 00:04:45.50\00:04:47.71 Oh, the doctrinal point was very definite. 00:04:47.74\00:04:49.78 And so that's why eventually 00:04:49.81\00:04:51.18 even though it was not his intention 00:04:51.21\00:04:52.68 to begin with to separate or break from Rome, 00:04:52.71\00:04:54.84 eventually that's what happened. 00:04:54.87\00:04:56.24 In the modern context, I think that church members 00:04:56.27\00:04:59.48 across the board for whatever denomination they belong to 00:04:59.51\00:05:02.18 need to really take time to figure out this issue 00:05:02.21\00:05:04.97 that I'm struggling with or that I'm involved in, 00:05:05.00\00:05:09.13 that I think that the church leadership is doing wrong. 00:05:09.16\00:05:10.53 Is it regarding core doctrinal teachings 00:05:10.56\00:05:12.85 where the church leadership is divergent from biblical truth 00:05:12.88\00:05:16.31 or is it simply an issue that as we pointed out before. 00:05:16.34\00:05:19.43 There can be a lot of societal issues 00:05:19.46\00:05:21.53 that if the leadership decides a certain way on those 00:05:21.56\00:05:24.32 and the church membership says well, I'm part of this body. 00:05:24.35\00:05:27.49 I don't really adopt that complete view of the leadership, 00:05:27.52\00:05:30.75 but it's not really an issue of salvation. 00:05:30.78\00:05:32.79 And if that's the case, 00:05:32.82\00:05:34.19 one would need to really think about how important it is 00:05:34.22\00:05:37.54 to oppose the leadership and try to pull out. Right. 00:05:37.57\00:05:40.55 And I have no respect. 00:05:40.58\00:05:42.14 I've said this many context in my work. 00:05:42.17\00:05:45.99 I've worked for the church all my life, well, most of my life. 00:05:46.02\00:05:49.45 I had a few other minor jobs, 00:05:49.48\00:05:50.97 but essentially on graduation from university, 00:05:51.00\00:05:53.70 I worked for the church ever since. 00:05:53.73\00:05:55.49 And I have no respect for somebody 00:05:55.52\00:05:58.15 who to get their own personal way 00:05:58.18\00:06:01.04 is willing to risk the bigger picture 00:06:01.07\00:06:04.54 and the integrity of the church 00:06:04.57\00:06:06.60 even the operation of the church, 00:06:06.63\00:06:08.02 someone that will say in my work context 00:06:08.05\00:06:11.79 to force me to do something as willing to drag down 00:06:11.82\00:06:14.88 any number of programs make them fail 00:06:14.91\00:06:17.17 to make me look bad to win their point. 00:06:17.20\00:06:20.52 And I would like to thank that someone with Christian integrity 00:06:20.55\00:06:23.73 wouldn't want to do that anyhow. Correct. 00:06:23.76\00:06:26.32 So that dynamic you need to keep in mind and again constantly, 00:06:26.35\00:06:31.03 you know, we get letters and so on from people 00:06:31.06\00:06:32.76 that they got no justice within the church. 00:06:32.79\00:06:36.19 Well, you know, justice of that personal nature 00:06:36.22\00:06:39.92 is very personally determined and very often you find 00:06:39.95\00:06:43.89 that such a person is 100% concerned about self 00:06:43.92\00:06:48.09 not to uphold the integrity of the church. 00:06:48.12\00:06:51.04 You know, I think that taking it 00:06:51.07\00:06:52.87 may be to looking at from another angle 00:06:52.90\00:06:55.31 perhaps that helps to portray 00:06:55.34\00:06:58.64 what I feel anyway is the manner, 00:06:58.67\00:07:01.95 the way that God would want us as Christians 00:07:01.98\00:07:04.32 to relate to these kinds of issues. 00:07:04.35\00:07:06.41 You know, when we look at go back in history 00:07:06.44\00:07:08.58 and we look at individuals that were reformers 00:07:08.61\00:07:10.95 Wycliffe, Hus, Luther himself, and others, 00:07:10.98\00:07:14.29 we find that especially in the earlier period 00:07:14.32\00:07:17.00 with Wycliffe and Hus, those were individuals 00:07:17.03\00:07:19.59 that they recognized definitive of wrongs 00:07:19.62\00:07:22.17 within the organization, 00:07:22.20\00:07:23.75 but their way of approaching that was not too lambaste, 00:07:23.78\00:07:26.95 not to argue for their civil rights and so forth. 00:07:26.98\00:07:29.64 They were ones that as they were concerned 00:07:29.67\00:07:32.00 more about living the life as a Christian 00:07:32.03\00:07:35.16 and not demonstrating a false Christian character 00:07:35.19\00:07:38.42 or mannerism and meekly upholding truth. 00:07:38.45\00:07:41.83 In fact I differ in saying-- 00:07:41.86\00:07:44.15 I've read many of their stories 00:07:44.18\00:07:45.55 and they seemed unnaturally collusive of their own security. 00:07:45.58\00:07:48.37 Correct. So they're not self-centered 00:07:48.40\00:07:50.16 and I really believed that's the key to most of life 00:07:50.19\00:07:53.09 but certainly when you're talking about debates 00:07:53.12\00:07:55.71 and differences within the church. 00:07:55.74\00:07:58.13 If somebody has the correct attitude of selflessness, 00:07:58.16\00:08:01.72 the Christianity calls for. 00:08:01.75\00:08:03.12 It almost means the thing 00:08:03.15\00:08:04.52 will hardly get started to begin with, 00:08:04.55\00:08:06.92 but they will certainly moderate these conflicts. Correct. 00:08:06.95\00:08:10.08 And you know like for example-- this is not for example, 00:08:10.11\00:08:13.48 but it reminds me that within the Adventist church, 00:08:13.51\00:08:16.80 there's currently a debate of the ordination of women 00:08:16.83\00:08:19.46 which hardly makes the Adventist church 00:08:19.49\00:08:21.08 different from the others. 00:08:21.11\00:08:23.16 This sort of thing is flooding through every church 00:08:23.19\00:08:24.97 even the Roman Catholic church, 00:08:25.00\00:08:26.67 has had a little flirtation with this sort of an argument. 00:08:26.70\00:08:30.53 But I've seen of late that those that are pushing it with-- 00:08:30.56\00:08:34.38 whether or not I agree with its immaterial, 00:08:34.41\00:08:36.20 but just my analysis is, 00:08:36.23\00:08:37.87 there are many of them seemingly prepared 00:08:37.90\00:08:40.73 to destroy the structure to win their point. 00:08:40.76\00:08:43.92 And I cannot have respect 00:08:43.95\00:08:45.44 for that sort of dogmatic approach. Correct. 00:08:45.47\00:08:49.84 For myself without actually taking a view 00:08:49.87\00:08:52.23 either in favor of or against 00:08:52.26\00:08:54.67 looking more at the aspect of religious freedom 00:08:54.70\00:08:57.47 in that dynamic within the church, 00:08:57.50\00:08:59.32 I think that, that we need individuals 00:08:59.35\00:09:01.51 that are members of-- in this case that, 00:09:01.54\00:09:03.23 that you brought out of the Adventist church, 00:09:03.26\00:09:05.18 they need to recognize what the Bible teaches 00:09:05.21\00:09:07.61 regarding the organization 00:09:07.64\00:09:09.17 and structure of the authority of the church. 00:09:09.20\00:09:11.29 The moment that is undermined and challenged 00:09:11.32\00:09:13.94 and destroyed even if the cause is right, 00:09:13.97\00:09:16.88 it is going to-- in essence it undermines 00:09:16.91\00:09:19.45 the authority throughout the church. So-- 00:09:19.48\00:09:21.36 And it's integrity. The flip side of it is. 00:09:21.39\00:09:23.43 Yes, the flip side of it is looking at it 00:09:23.46\00:09:25.19 from the individual that thinks that their position is right 00:09:25.22\00:09:28.40 and they're advocating it within the church. 00:09:28.43\00:09:30.61 If the organized and in current leadership does not adopt that, 00:09:30.64\00:09:35.86 the proper approach of the Christian believers 00:09:35.89\00:09:38.48 is simply to say, "I lay it in God's hands, 00:09:38.51\00:09:40.68 I will pray about it. 00:09:40.71\00:09:42.08 And it may be a period of time 00:09:42.11\00:09:43.69 before that view can actually be modified 00:09:43.72\00:09:46.65 and changed within the leadership 00:09:46.68\00:09:48.49 and once that is done-- 00:09:48.52\00:09:49.89 Yeah, when you're laying at a very Christian 00:09:49.92\00:09:52.01 selfless approach to resolving conflict. 00:09:52.04\00:09:54.61 Sure and I think that the key focus then 00:09:54.64\00:09:57.56 is for the individual believer regardless of their denomination 00:09:57.59\00:10:01.10 to be identified with Christ 00:10:01.13\00:10:03.48 and in essence Christ to live in them in such a way 00:10:03.51\00:10:06.41 that they're willing to let the Holy Spirit 00:10:06.44\00:10:08.42 resolve the issues that they see are of prime importance 00:10:08.45\00:10:12.45 that they themselves cannot resolve through advocacy, 00:10:12.48\00:10:15.47 through speaking, and thus maintain unity 00:10:15.50\00:10:18.05 and love within the church. 00:10:18.08\00:10:19.84 As a Christian, I'm quite content to use the life 00:10:21.21\00:10:24.41 and ministry of Jesus as a model from our behavior. 00:10:24.44\00:10:28.72 It strikes me that when Jesus was on trial 00:10:28.75\00:10:31.83 for His very life before the church leaders 00:10:31.86\00:10:34.57 in advance to being sent before the civil leaders 00:10:34.60\00:10:36.87 which is a whole interesting comment 00:10:36.90\00:10:38.96 on church state relations. 00:10:38.99\00:10:41.22 But when He was on trial before those leaders, 00:10:41.25\00:10:44.56 the high priest said something to Him 00:10:44.59\00:10:46.35 and Jesus answered in a way 00:10:46.38\00:10:48.49 that a soldier or guard standing nearby took exception to it 00:10:48.52\00:10:52.23 and He slapped Jesus and he said, 00:10:52.26\00:10:53.63 "How dare you speak to the high priest that way?" 00:10:53.66\00:10:56.83 And very tellingly Jesus said, 00:10:56.86\00:10:58.61 "I didn't know he was the high priest." 00:10:58.64\00:11:01.01 And He basically apologized. 00:11:01.04\00:11:03.89 I really think that while we have those inevitable clashes 00:11:03.92\00:11:07.79 of personality within a church 00:11:07.82\00:11:09.92 and real difference that we need to abstain from critiquing 00:11:09.95\00:11:14.47 at a non-Christian even in human way. 00:11:14.50\00:11:18.44 Those that differ from us, there is room for difference. 00:11:18.47\00:11:23.15 And clearly as our guest on this program has pointed out 00:11:23.18\00:11:27.08 there is a real need for the underlying Christian 00:11:27.11\00:11:30.24 consideration of a converted life 00:11:30.27\00:11:33.39 that is put into practice 00:11:33.42\00:11:34.79 not just reaching out to other people to tell them, 00:11:34.82\00:11:37.06 but reaching back to our fellow believers 00:11:37.09\00:11:38.93 and demonstrating Christian charity. 00:11:38.96\00:11:41.52 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:43.48\00:11:46.13
