Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.28\00:00:07.84 Before the break with NARLA director Melissa Reid, 00:00:07.87\00:00:11.37 we were talking about its history, some of the plans 00:00:11.40\00:00:16.45 and what I would like to get into is how can 00:00:16.48\00:00:18.90 we involve the viewers because I am sure out there, 00:00:18.93\00:00:22.23 there's a serious number of people that in fact 00:00:22.26\00:00:25.92 there in the Seventh-day Adventist Church Ellen White, 00:00:25.95\00:00:28.40 the pioneer Ellen White, said something about the youth, 00:00:28.43\00:00:31.34 fitly trained, an army of youth fitly trained. 00:00:31.37\00:00:33.58 Oh yes, yes. 00:00:33.61\00:00:35.83 You can change the world with the few thousand of people 00:00:35.86\00:00:38.93 and we've probably got millions 00:00:38.96\00:00:40.43 one way or another out there. Yeah. 00:00:40.46\00:00:42.00 Well, we had a really fun time just a few months ago 00:00:42.03\00:00:45.66 may be just even a month ago, I mentioned that working as, 00:00:45.69\00:00:49.71 you know, doing a local NARLA chapter. 00:00:49.74\00:00:52.13 Well, there are also regional NARLA chapters. 00:00:52.16\00:00:54.56 There is one in southern United States. 00:00:54.59\00:00:56.82 There is also one out in California, in the pacific 00:00:56.85\00:01:00.24 or that, you know, the Western United States. 00:01:00.27\00:01:02.77 And at our offices they are at in Silver Spring, 00:01:02.80\00:01:07.04 Maryland at the world headquarters 00:01:07.07\00:01:08.44 Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:01:08.47\00:01:09.84 We had a group of energetic young kids come 00:01:09.87\00:01:12.07 that were working that were sponsored by this-- 00:01:12.10\00:01:16.62 Freedom classroom? Yes. 00:01:16.65\00:01:18.08 It was called freedom classroom. So this regional organization 00:01:18.11\00:01:22.62 of NARLA or chapter of NARLA 00:01:22.65\00:01:24.33 sponsored these individuals these young kids. 00:01:24.36\00:01:26.29 I think it was may be 12 or 13 high schoolers 00:01:26.32\00:01:29.80 who have expressed interest in issues of several liberties, 00:01:29.83\00:01:33.64 religious freedom, and it was really 00:01:33.67\00:01:36.03 and we talked about this before, training, you know, 00:01:36.06\00:01:39.89 this next generation of religion liberty leaders. 00:01:39.92\00:01:42.18 That was a very hopeful sign. 00:01:42.21\00:01:43.58 I was encouraged by that. Yeah. 00:01:43.61\00:01:45.06 It's not just in religious liberty and I don't even think 00:01:45.09\00:01:47.83 just in the Seventh-day Adventist church, 00:01:47.86\00:01:49.87 too often things of a faith nature 00:01:49.90\00:01:52.30 not just devotional things, but church programs 00:01:52.33\00:01:55.79 other than sort of party or skiing 00:01:55.82\00:01:59.85 and youth programs. Right. 00:01:59.88\00:02:01.53 You see older people doing these things 00:02:01.56\00:02:03.28 and not so often the young people really on fire 00:02:03.31\00:02:06.44 to make a difference on faith, so this was very encouraging. 00:02:06.47\00:02:11.30 I thought it was encouraging as well. 00:02:11.33\00:02:13.19 And I am sorry to interrupt, but it reminded me 00:02:13.22\00:02:14.92 its part of their criteria was that they would done 00:02:14.95\00:02:17.07 well at school and had done an essay or some paper 00:02:17.10\00:02:21.43 on a religious liberty topic. Right. 00:02:21.46\00:02:23.02 And again we weren't expecting them to be experts yet. 00:02:23.05\00:02:26.11 We just wanted to see an interest and then encourage 00:02:26.14\00:02:29.78 their interests from there and out. 00:02:29.81\00:02:31.39 And I really felt like, you know, 00:02:31.42\00:02:33.04 well this is the inaugural program and it was really great. 00:02:33.07\00:02:35.65 They visited not only our offices, 00:02:35.68\00:02:38.00 but they were able to visit with legislators 00:02:38.03\00:02:41.15 in downtown Washington D.C. They were also able to go 00:02:41.18\00:02:43.55 to see a historical perspective as far as 00:02:43.58\00:02:47.31 religious freedom within the United States. 00:02:47.34\00:02:48.81 And so they visited Thomas Jefferson's home 00:02:48.84\00:02:51.24 and I think also James Madison. 00:02:51.27\00:02:53.18 So it just was really encouraging. 00:02:53.21\00:02:54.90 So, you know, you asked the question 00:02:54.93\00:02:57.47 how can our viewers become involved in NARLA 00:02:57.50\00:03:00.75 and religious freedom issues on a local level. 00:03:00.78\00:03:03.64 I think that's a great idea to get your youth involved. 00:03:03.67\00:03:07.31 You know, it can be something as expensive 00:03:07.34\00:03:11.56 and may be expensive as during, you know, 00:03:11.59\00:03:15.04 freedom classroom style program. But it also can be as simple 00:03:15.07\00:03:19.66 and this is probably a great place to start as, you know, 00:03:19.69\00:03:22.64 a lot of churches have a local or afternoon 00:03:22.67\00:03:26.13 A.Y. program at their church. Well, you know, 00:03:26.16\00:03:28.84 start incorporating religious freedom issues there. 00:03:28.87\00:03:31.35 Bringing in some lawyers or government people 00:03:31.38\00:03:34.10 that could talk on this. Right, Exactly. 00:03:34.13\00:03:36.54 Get their minds engaged in these public policy issues. 00:03:36.57\00:03:40.28 You know, lot of them I know that I became, 00:03:40.31\00:03:43.18 you know, as a young person, as a teenager 00:03:43.21\00:03:45.17 became very interested in political-- 00:03:45.20\00:03:47.50 not even political issues, but social issues. 00:03:47.53\00:03:51.34 And I think, you know, you see that happen 00:03:51.37\00:03:53.65 you want to encourage, you want to first of all 00:03:53.68\00:03:56.83 explain to them as a Seventh-day Adventist Christians, 00:03:56.86\00:04:00.24 you know, your churches long term history 00:04:00.27\00:04:02.45 with religious liberty and then encourage development in that. 00:04:02.48\00:04:06.66 And I know when young people goes 00:04:06.69\00:04:08.89 see some of the legislatives they bend over backwards 00:04:08.92\00:04:12.28 and they're just captivated to talk to these young people. 00:04:12.31\00:04:15.33 Any legislature likes to talk to constituents. 00:04:15.36\00:04:18.27 But still when these young people there 00:04:18.30\00:04:19.96 this is they are like the prize. Yes, yes. 00:04:19.99\00:04:22.68 And in the past I have noticed that. 00:04:22.71\00:04:25.24 So if your church or your civic group 00:04:25.27\00:04:29.13 can organize a group of young people for religious liberty 00:04:29.16\00:04:32.49 and then you take them along to see the mayor inside, 00:04:32.52\00:04:34.71 you gonna have an open door. Oh, absolutely. 00:04:34.74\00:04:36.84 I am certain of that. Absolutely. 00:04:36.87\00:04:38.98 Its might be little hard, you know, leg work 00:04:39.01\00:04:41.53 to actually organize it. But it's not going to be 00:04:41.56\00:04:43.42 a difficult door to open. Right, right. 00:04:43.45\00:04:45.61 And then it seems natural, you know, if you're doing that, 00:04:45.64\00:04:48.87 you know, on a high school or middle school level 00:04:48.90\00:04:51.14 there to local church. Then when the kids 00:04:51.17\00:04:54.04 go on to college, well then they may actually initiate 00:04:54.07\00:04:57.53 and we'd love to see this, you know, NARLA chapters 00:04:57.56\00:05:01.14 there on campus, there at Adventist Universities. 00:05:01.17\00:05:03.67 You know, you see the young republicans 00:05:03.70\00:05:05.13 or the young democrats or whoever. 00:05:05.16\00:05:07.03 Well, wouldn't it be great to have, you know, 00:05:07.06\00:05:08.86 a group of religious freedom advocates 00:05:08.89\00:05:10.71 organizing there on campus? And it's very important I think 00:05:10.74\00:05:13.54 because you mentioned that they went to some of these group, 00:05:13.57\00:05:16.60 doesn't know so that came the other day. 00:05:16.63\00:05:18.65 They went to some of the historic spots. 00:05:18.68\00:05:22.10 They went to Madison's home out in Virginia there. 00:05:22.13\00:05:27.08 And they were being told the history 00:05:27.11\00:05:28.85 which is very important on religious liberty. 00:05:28.88\00:05:31.10 And Madison in particular and Jefferson 00:05:31.13\00:05:34.26 on the first amendment, these were pivotal pioneers. 00:05:34.29\00:05:38.32 But they need to get the right facts 00:05:38.35\00:05:40.50 because goodness knows some religionists 00:05:40.53\00:05:43.16 for a variety of self-serving reasons are skewing history. 00:05:43.19\00:05:47.72 And how are these young people going to get the facts 00:05:47.75\00:05:50.11 unless they're taken under the wing 00:05:50.14\00:05:52.09 of an organization like NARLA. Yeah. 00:05:52.12\00:05:54.03 It's interesting that you said I just, 00:05:54.06\00:05:55.68 as we were traveling to come in and be on the show. 00:05:55.71\00:06:00.49 I was listening to a new story about an individual 00:06:00.52\00:06:03.08 who refers to the separation of church 00:06:03.11\00:06:06.23 and state as a myth, David Barton. 00:06:06.26\00:06:09.53 One of his books is being withdrawn. 00:06:09.56\00:06:11.16 That's exactly right. He's written a book. 00:06:11.19\00:06:12.93 He's sort of, well, what do you say? 00:06:12.96\00:06:14.33 He's rewritten history on Thomas Jefferson, 00:06:14.36\00:06:16.86 who we know, you know, and if you as liberty magazine 00:06:16.89\00:06:20.12 readers know because we often feature 00:06:20.15\00:06:22.18 his quotes in our magazine, you know, a long time advocate 00:06:22.21\00:06:26.07 of separation of church and state. 00:06:26.10\00:06:27.91 And so this gentleman-- so you are right, 00:06:27.94\00:06:30.38 going to source and hearing from the source-- 00:06:30.41\00:06:33.34 And it comes from different angles. 00:06:33.37\00:06:34.80 Like I couple of days ago bought a beautifully-- 00:06:34.83\00:06:38.85 isn't a discount store. So I got a good deal on it, 00:06:38.88\00:06:41.32 but a beautifully packaged Bible, leather cover 00:06:41.35\00:06:45.31 and everything and it's called the Patriots Bible. 00:06:45.34\00:06:48.04 And it had also quotes from Gorge Washington 00:06:48.07\00:06:50.19 and the others and then as well as large print 00:06:50.22\00:06:53.24 I got it because of the preaching. 00:06:53.27\00:06:55.27 But it is just beautifully presented. 00:06:55.30\00:06:56.89 But as I look through it I saw that this might have been 00:06:56.92\00:06:59.63 as well been a David Barton type thing. 00:06:59.66\00:07:02.16 It was of--nothing was factually wrong, 00:07:02.19\00:07:05.59 but it was all tilted to give you the idea 00:07:05.62\00:07:07.93 that we basically, as we were in church, you know, 00:07:07.96\00:07:11.87 and this is a religious community. Yes. 00:07:11.90\00:07:14.91 I mean we want to advance religion, 00:07:14.94\00:07:16.82 but religion misrepresented actually leads 00:07:16.85\00:07:19.89 to false religion. And so we need to clarify. 00:07:19.92\00:07:23.32 And I think this is a huge advantage of NARLA, 00:07:23.35\00:07:25.73 which is not just for young people 00:07:25.76\00:07:27.74 but NARLA's special role I think can be 00:07:27.77\00:07:29.88 to nurture young people to be informed and to be active. 00:07:29.91\00:07:33.92 Absolutely, absolutely. 00:07:33.95\00:07:35.32 You talked about membership before 00:07:35.35\00:07:36.72 and we start our membership fees very low. 00:07:36.75\00:07:39.65 They are really nominal and in fact we also have 00:07:39.68\00:07:42.38 a student membership fee, which is you know, again-- 00:07:42.41\00:07:45.36 And the membership includes liberty magazine. 00:07:45.39\00:07:47.52 That's exactly right. By design from the cover. 00:07:47.55\00:07:49.64 But, of course, because again it's one component 00:07:49.67\00:07:52.03 of a religious liberty ministry want to make sure, you know, 00:07:52.06\00:07:55.48 as you said we really want to provide resources for people 00:07:55.51\00:07:58.07 and liberty magazine is that really, 00:07:58.10\00:08:00.06 the preeminent resource as far as 00:08:00.09\00:08:03.11 religious liberty issues go. So I really, yeah, 00:08:03.14\00:08:06.44 I do encourage viewers to visit our website. 00:08:06.47\00:08:09.30 religiousliberty.info and really take a look, 00:08:09.33\00:08:12.28 see how you can become involved, 00:08:12.31\00:08:14.81 see what others are doing. We try to focus 00:08:14.84\00:08:17.14 just a few back in January when we had a religious 00:08:17.17\00:08:20.36 liberty Sabbath at my local church. 00:08:20.39\00:08:22.45 We had a state congressman who represented-- 00:08:22.48\00:08:26.81 I live in Colombia, Maryland, represented that area, 00:08:26.84\00:08:29.32 just invited her and one of our members had 00:08:29.35\00:08:31.79 a relationship with her. She came and spoke and, 00:08:31.82\00:08:36.55 you know, she was able to see that our faith group, 00:08:36.58\00:08:39.73 you know, Seventh-day Adventists 00:08:39.76\00:08:41.13 are passionate about religious freedom. 00:08:41.16\00:08:42.84 We were able to share that with her 00:08:42.87\00:08:44.36 and so she knows that her constituents 00:08:44.39\00:08:46.44 there in the community are religious freedom advocates, 00:08:46.47\00:08:48.99 or you know, this is an issue that's important to them. 00:08:49.02\00:08:52.33 And so we posted that on the NARLA website. 00:08:52.36\00:08:54.54 It's just to give people an idea of, you know, 00:08:54.57\00:08:56.83 I am interested, I am excited 00:08:56.86\00:08:58.23 about this ministry how can I become involved. 00:08:58.26\00:08:59.88 This education works two ways. The legislative was learning 00:08:59.91\00:09:03.96 about what people do. Exactly, absolutely. 00:09:03.99\00:09:05.75 Not just for the people that attended the meeting. 00:09:05.78\00:09:08.98 Absolutely, no I feel like and--you know, 00:09:09.01\00:09:11.13 we've talked before about the annual religious 00:09:11.16\00:09:13.26 liberty dinner that we do on Capital Hill. 00:09:13.29\00:09:14.80 Sure. It functions that way. 00:09:14.83\00:09:16.20 It functions that way as well. I mean, you know, 00:09:16.23\00:09:18.63 we want to influence individuals. 00:09:18.66\00:09:20.59 Well didn't--didn't we hear from legislative 00:09:20.62\00:09:23.41 as on the other day that Hillary Clinton 00:09:23.44\00:09:25.45 even referred to speaking at the dinner. 00:09:25.48\00:09:27.53 Yes. Oh, that was incredible so for--. 00:09:27.56\00:09:30.04 And I do remember and I don't think 00:09:30.07\00:09:32.82 it's improper to say this, but when she was-- 00:09:32.85\00:09:35.08 after she spoke I think it was about the same time 00:09:35.11\00:09:37.72 she did a little video promo for liberty magazine. Yes. 00:09:37.75\00:09:41.18 And while she was waiting for the cameras to start, 00:09:41.21\00:09:45.26 she had quite a dialog with one of our representatives 00:09:45.29\00:09:48.09 about the Seventh-day Sabbath. 00:09:48.12\00:09:50.05 She says, you know, the fourth commandment. 00:09:50.08\00:09:52.17 I thought that was Sunday. You know, I wouldn't say 00:09:52.20\00:09:56.10 that she was convinced of anything, 00:09:56.13\00:09:57.50 but there is a perfect natural opportunity 00:09:57.53\00:09:59.47 to communicate our theological and religious liberty viewpoint 00:09:59.50\00:10:03.98 to someone in a friendly atmosphere. 00:10:04.01\00:10:05.96 Right, right and the thing is, you know, as a private citizen 00:10:05.99\00:10:08.79 and even you know, if we are working 00:10:08.82\00:10:11.09 in a professional environment sometimes it's-- 00:10:11.12\00:10:13.04 it can be intimidating to have those conversations. 00:10:13.07\00:10:15.38 But again if you are prepared and you've had that, you know, 00:10:15.41\00:10:22.24 you're familiar with the topic, you're passionate 00:10:22.27\00:10:24.05 about the topic. Then and this is where 00:10:24.08\00:10:26.82 I feel NARLA's role coming in again. 00:10:26.85\00:10:28.56 You know, we have those training sessions to-- 00:10:28.59\00:10:30.93 you know, if you are going be doing a lobbying day, 00:10:30.96\00:10:33.55 you know, whether it's on the state level 00:10:33.58\00:10:35.00 or on the local level, we train individuals 00:10:35.03\00:10:38.45 so that they can feel very comfortable and you know-- 00:10:38.48\00:10:41.45 And everybody that's being part of that has enjoyed it. 00:10:41.48\00:10:44.17 It sounds intimidating, but in practice it's a fun time 00:10:44.20\00:10:48.38 to meet all by some social level and just inform somebody 00:10:48.41\00:10:52.88 who is sitting there, yes tell us about what you believe in. 00:10:52.91\00:10:56.18 Yes, yes. And many times and again, 00:10:56.21\00:10:58.32 you know, we are doing this cross pollination here, 00:10:58.35\00:11:01.62 but many times we've gone to those lobbying visits 00:11:01.65\00:11:03.56 and seen liberty magazine on the coffee table. 00:11:03.59\00:11:05.49 Yes. It's always very nice isn't it? 00:11:05.52\00:11:07.10 It's great. No, it's the introduction of, 00:11:07.13\00:11:10.75 you know, of our message into--you know, 00:11:10.78\00:11:13.81 starting that conversation. So anyway I really 00:11:13.84\00:11:16.62 encourage you. If you are interested 00:11:16.65\00:11:18.02 in religious liberty issues to become, you know, 00:11:18.05\00:11:20.90 to check out the NARLA website, which is religiousliberty.info 00:11:20.93\00:11:24.15 see how you can become involved and even just, you know, 00:11:24.18\00:11:28.29 become aware of what's going on in your local community, 00:11:28.32\00:11:30.89 checkout that in Google map and see if there is a dot 00:11:30.92\00:11:33.38 next to your town. 00:11:33.41\00:11:35.46 As I record this, the television screens 00:11:36.76\00:11:39.73 across the world are filled with images of violence 00:11:39.76\00:11:43.00 and rebellion and civil war in Syria. 00:11:43.03\00:11:46.67 I was very moved on one occasion to see 00:11:46.70\00:11:49.27 a scene of a young woman probably in her early 20s 00:11:49.30\00:11:53.21 lying critically ill. In fact she died 00:11:53.24\00:11:57.11 a little later of her injuries and she looked at the camera 00:11:57.14\00:12:00.52 and she says, "we will keep the struggle going, 00:12:00.55\00:12:03.49 we will not give up. " It takes a lot 00:12:03.52\00:12:06.63 when your life is actually ebbing away to continue 00:12:06.66\00:12:10.15 the commitment to a cause like that. 00:12:10.18\00:12:13.43 I know that as Christians standing for religious liberty 00:12:13.46\00:12:16.07 we too are called to do whatever it takes. 00:12:16.10\00:12:19.30 I read a book once about Christian witness 00:12:19.33\00:12:22.05 where the protagonist said that as a young man 00:12:22.08\00:12:24.74 he heard the minister saying Christ is worth your all, 00:12:24.77\00:12:29.12 if He is worth anything at all. 00:12:29.15\00:12:31.31 When we deal with religious liberty, 00:12:31.34\00:12:32.85 when we're talking about NARLA membership, 00:12:32.88\00:12:35.11 when we're talking about becoming an activist, 00:12:35.14\00:12:37.45 that same dynamic must apply. 00:12:37.48\00:12:40.47 If it's important it demands out everything. 00:12:40.50\00:12:44.26 It demands absolute total commitment. 00:12:44.29\00:12:48.63 For Liberty Insider this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:50.38\00:12:54.17
