Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.41\00:00:08.10 Before the break, with guest Dr. John Graz, 00:00:08.13\00:00:11.24 we were solving the world's problems 00:00:11.27\00:00:13.60 as far as religious liberty goes. 00:00:13.63\00:00:15.24 But--and there are many, many problems. 00:00:15.27\00:00:17.03 You were giving some examples-- 00:00:17.06\00:00:18.65 Problem, challenges, and opportunities. 00:00:18.68\00:00:21.29 Absolutely, so as you look at the world 00:00:21.32\00:00:24.94 and the events that are bearing down on us, 00:00:24.97\00:00:27.58 do you see much hope for religious liberty 00:00:27.61\00:00:30.52 or is it changing for the best? What's the dynamic? 00:00:30.55\00:00:33.76 I think there are always some hope, you know? 00:00:33.79\00:00:36.50 There are some hope in the country 00:00:36.53\00:00:38.32 and there are some bad news in some other countries. 00:00:38.35\00:00:40.59 It means it doesn't-- 00:00:40.62\00:00:41.99 it's not really very rigid in some ways 00:00:42.02\00:00:46.36 that you can hope that the situation 00:00:46.39\00:00:48.40 will improve in some countries. 00:00:48.43\00:00:50.26 We can hope that, maybe, 00:00:50.29\00:00:52.03 things will become better in China, in Vietnam, 00:00:52.06\00:00:56.34 but now when it comes to Middle East 00:00:56.37\00:00:59.02 that's more difficult to have really a hope. 00:00:59.05\00:01:02.52 What we could hope is, you know, maybe, 00:01:02.55\00:01:05.45 people will be free to go to church and protected, 00:01:05.48\00:01:10.39 specially protected but there are 00:01:10.42\00:01:12.89 lot of challenges-- Lot of challenges-- 00:01:12.92\00:01:14.29 Just a lot of challenges-- And seems to me 00:01:14.32\00:01:16.00 that the spirit of revolution that's sweeping the Middle East 00:01:16.03\00:01:19.79 and some other areas on a smaller scale 00:01:19.82\00:01:22.67 that you can't separate religious threat 00:01:22.70\00:01:24.94 from that because there's a dynamic 00:01:24.97\00:01:27.17 where as the political situation explodes 00:01:27.20\00:01:30.33 then some religions are seen as a sort of a proxy 00:01:30.36\00:01:33.83 for a political party and people are victimized, 00:01:33.86\00:01:36.52 churches are burnt. Yes. 00:01:36.55\00:01:37.92 And, you know, in some of these countries religious leaders 00:01:37.95\00:01:42.32 or what we call, maybe, a fundamentalist 00:01:42.35\00:01:44.57 or extremist were persecuted 00:01:44.60\00:01:46.75 by the previous government of leader or dictators. 00:01:46.78\00:01:50.92 And, of course, now they want to take their revenge 00:01:50.95\00:01:53.15 and they're well organized. Yeah. 00:01:53.18\00:01:55.19 And the project they have for their countries 00:01:55.22\00:01:57.70 are not really a democratic and liberal country. 00:01:57.73\00:02:00.57 They want to impose their religion. 00:02:00.60\00:02:03.18 They have an agenda and it's very clear 00:02:03.21\00:02:06.57 there is not a space for those who don't agree with them. 00:02:06.60\00:02:11.00 And it's stronger than it could have been in the past 00:02:11.03\00:02:14.49 or it was in the past because it's a religious. 00:02:14.52\00:02:17.10 It means you have behind the idea of, 00:02:17.13\00:02:19.66 we have the truth and as long as you don't obey to the truth 00:02:19.69\00:02:24.34 the country will not be blessed. Yeah. 00:02:24.37\00:02:26.63 If you want to live in a blessed country from God 00:02:26.66\00:02:30.74 you should not accept dissidence, 00:02:30.77\00:02:34.23 heretics of people who disagree with the truth. 00:02:34.26\00:02:37.67 I mean that's very strong. 00:02:37.70\00:02:39.08 And it seems to me that more and more 00:02:39.11\00:02:41.09 when there's a civil disturbance in a country 00:02:41.12\00:02:44.77 they then start to identify different minorities 00:02:44.80\00:02:48.18 as representatives of outside powers 00:02:48.21\00:02:50.58 that they find severely threatening. 00:02:50.61\00:02:52.76 It's very easy to become paranoiac, you know? 00:02:52.79\00:02:55.12 Well, and sometimes the paranoia 00:02:55.15\00:02:56.83 based on a small bit effect. Yeah. 00:02:56.86\00:02:59.55 Which is to me more evidence that a Christian, 00:02:59.58\00:03:03.24 since we're talking from a Christian perspective, 00:03:03.27\00:03:04.96 a Christian should stay out of the civil affairs. 00:03:04.99\00:03:08.50 As the early Christian church was concerned about 00:03:08.53\00:03:11.42 saving souls and witnessing 00:03:11.45\00:03:13.16 and practicing the Christian life 00:03:13.19\00:03:15.59 but not get entangled with the state-- 00:03:15.62\00:03:18.09 You know, we can understand 00:03:18.12\00:03:19.49 that if you are a member of religious group. 00:03:19.52\00:03:21.47 The religious group have the right to say, sorry, 00:03:21.50\00:03:24.61 but you don't follow the rules. 00:03:24.64\00:03:26.51 Sorry, but you don't share anymore of our creeds. 00:03:26.54\00:03:30.37 It means you are this fellowship, 00:03:30.40\00:03:33.30 we don't want you here. 00:03:33.33\00:03:34.85 They have the right to do that 00:03:34.88\00:03:36.25 but when the same way of thinking 00:03:36.28\00:03:39.07 become the national way of thinking 00:03:39.10\00:03:41.42 and you use the power of the state-- 00:03:41.45\00:03:43.29 And then there are penalties-- 00:03:43.32\00:03:44.69 And penalties and put people in jail as we took-- 00:03:44.72\00:03:48.59 as example what happened in Pakistan 00:03:48.62\00:03:50.65 and some other countries. 00:03:50.68\00:03:52.24 We cannot accept that. 00:03:52.27\00:03:53.64 That's really opposed to the human being, 00:03:53.67\00:03:57.03 to the dignity of human being. 00:03:57.06\00:03:59.00 And of course, you know, some people may thought that, 00:03:59.03\00:04:01.90 may think that, is it really necessary? 00:04:01.93\00:04:04.63 Is it worth to continue to preach the gospel 00:04:04.66\00:04:09.53 when you know that so many people 00:04:09.56\00:04:11.75 who will have problem around the world? 00:04:11.78\00:04:13.59 They will be persecuted. They will loose everything. 00:04:13.62\00:04:17.93 Do we have to do that? 00:04:17.96\00:04:19.67 Do we have a responsibility? That's a big question. 00:04:19.70\00:04:23.24 When you mention the gospel 00:04:23.27\00:04:24.64 and maybe this is time for another diversion 00:04:24.67\00:04:27.58 but get back to the central point. 00:04:27.61\00:04:29.81 When we're talking about religious liberty 00:04:29.84\00:04:31.30 for a Christian, it's not a civil contract, 00:04:31.33\00:04:33.49 it's not a just a civil principal. 00:04:33.52\00:04:37.51 We're in this because we believe in the gospel. 00:04:37.54\00:04:39.81 We follow Jesus Christ. 00:04:39.84\00:04:41.25 We want to exemplify what He told us to do. 00:04:41.28\00:04:46.40 And we need to show charity to other people. 00:04:46.43\00:04:48.68 We need to act redemptively toward them. 00:04:48.71\00:04:51.48 And all of this are, perhaps, best within 00:04:51.51\00:04:53.86 a true model of religious liberty. 00:04:53.89\00:04:57.06 But what do we get from the Bible? 00:04:57.09\00:04:58.49 What are we told to do? 00:04:58.52\00:05:01.22 What are our marching orders 00:05:01.25\00:05:02.62 as we practice our faith in any country? 00:05:02.65\00:05:05.98 Yeah, we have to practice our faith 00:05:06.01\00:05:07.95 and to live it and to share it. 00:05:07.98\00:05:09.89 That is the order of Jesus, you know? 00:05:09.92\00:05:11.62 Go and you preach but Jesus has never said force people. 00:05:11.65\00:05:15.42 No. Or take over. 00:05:15.45\00:05:17.93 You know take in charge of the government 00:05:17.96\00:05:19.64 and use the power of the state 00:05:19.67\00:05:21.11 to force people to become Christian. 00:05:21.14\00:05:22.82 Like he was at pains to point out 00:05:22.85\00:05:24.32 that you do with Caesar's currency 00:05:24.35\00:05:26.32 and that's his business. 00:05:26.35\00:05:27.72 You know, it's not the currency of heaven. 00:05:27.75\00:05:29.96 He was at pains to tell Pilate, 00:05:29.99\00:05:33.50 "My Kingdom is not of this world 00:05:33.53\00:05:35.05 otherwise my followers would fight." You're right. 00:05:35.08\00:05:37.81 Jesus--something that I've hardly ever heard mentioned 00:05:37.84\00:05:40.50 but when he sent his followers out to witness 00:05:40.53\00:05:43.61 to the Samaritans or any other non Jewish area 00:05:43.64\00:05:47.60 they were told to say their peace 00:05:47.63\00:05:49.00 and if they reject it, shake off the dust and go their way. 00:05:49.03\00:05:51.92 Not to try to challenge the status quo. 00:05:51.95\00:05:54.17 And also Jesus says, you will be-- 00:05:54.20\00:05:55.89 He said, you will be persecuted. Absolutely. 00:05:55.92\00:05:57.71 And He say, love your enemies. Yeah. 00:05:57.74\00:05:59.47 And Apostle Paul said, 00:05:59.50\00:06:00.87 don't try to take revenge yourself. 00:06:00.90\00:06:03.29 Let revenge in the hand of God. 00:06:03.32\00:06:06.44 It means it's very clear for the church 00:06:06.47\00:06:08.85 at the beginning of the history 00:06:08.88\00:06:10.28 of the Christian church, you know? 00:06:10.31\00:06:12.05 They were not called to takeover, to make an alliance 00:06:12.08\00:06:16.99 between churches or between religion and the state. 00:06:17.02\00:06:20.73 That was totally different. 00:06:20.76\00:06:22.13 The state has, you know, its own job 00:06:22.16\00:06:26.11 and the church has its mission-- 00:06:26.14\00:06:28.62 had its mission which make things very clear. 00:06:28.65\00:06:31.91 Now, you know, is it really worth to preach the gospel, 00:06:31.94\00:06:35.15 to ask people to change the religion. 00:06:35.18\00:06:37.71 I think that it's a good test, you know? 00:06:37.74\00:06:39.54 If we believe in a human dignity we cannot say, oh, yes, 00:06:39.57\00:06:44.19 we believe in a human dignity 00:06:44.22\00:06:45.65 but just in the U.S. or just in Europe. Right. Why? 00:06:45.68\00:06:49.09 Do you think that people living in other part of the world 00:06:49.12\00:06:51.64 are not human and they don't deserve human dignity 00:06:51.67\00:06:55.68 even if their government or their authorities, 00:06:55.71\00:06:59.33 you know, don't recognize their human dignity? 00:06:59.36\00:07:02.16 We recognize it and we want to give them the possibilities. 00:07:02.19\00:07:05.77 There's the run though 00:07:05.80\00:07:07.17 and this is where Christian America has-- 00:07:07.20\00:07:09.41 I am using that in quotes-- has a problem. 00:07:09.44\00:07:12.90 They look and see another country 00:07:12.93\00:07:14.33 where these rights and, particularly, 00:07:14.36\00:07:16.24 a religious right is denied. 00:07:16.27\00:07:18.22 Well, and therefore onward Christian soldiers will send 00:07:18.25\00:07:21.08 the expeditionary force over there 00:07:21.11\00:07:23.21 to make them give liberty. 00:07:23.24\00:07:25.56 I am not sure a Christian is called to act that way. 00:07:25.59\00:07:28.68 No, you know-- We have to intercede in prayer. 00:07:28.71\00:07:30.95 We're to stand up as pulled it on occasion 00:07:30.98\00:07:34.16 before the authorities and give a reason for our faith. 00:07:34.19\00:07:36.88 You know, during the three centuries 00:07:36.91\00:07:39.02 where Christian were persecuted, 00:07:39.05\00:07:41.09 there were enough to organize 00:07:41.12\00:07:42.89 a kind of army or for-- to have rebellion. 00:07:42.92\00:07:47.96 You know, in some part of the Roman Empire 00:07:47.99\00:07:50.06 there were 50, 60 person. 00:07:50.09\00:07:51.96 They could have create, you know, a strong opposition. 00:07:51.99\00:07:56.08 They could have used weapon. 00:07:56.11\00:07:58.44 They had soldiers among them. They never did that. 00:07:58.47\00:08:01.67 They were persecuted from the beginning to the end 00:08:01.70\00:08:04.24 until they become allied with the government. 00:08:04.27\00:08:07.14 It means for them it was clear 00:08:07.17\00:08:09.02 that's not of the job of the church, 00:08:09.05\00:08:10.94 of the Christian to be involved in fighting 00:08:10.97\00:08:14.96 in such a way to take over the authorities. 00:08:14.99\00:08:18.23 I know that it could be difficult to understand. 00:08:18.26\00:08:20.53 It's a constant tension even today. It's a tension. 00:08:20.56\00:08:22.92 And even some of what we do with religious liberty 00:08:22.95\00:08:25.27 where if necessity, we're interacting with governments, 00:08:25.30\00:08:28.16 we're even speaking up on certain laws. 00:08:28.19\00:08:32.05 And there's a fine line, it seems to me, 00:08:32.08\00:08:33.55 between doing all of that correctly 00:08:33.58\00:08:35.91 and then doing what some of the Christian right 00:08:35.94\00:08:38.69 for one of the better designator have done 00:08:38.72\00:08:40.47 with a organized form of voting. 00:08:40.50\00:08:42.66 They've voter records and they put candidates in there 00:08:42.69\00:08:46.55 with a conscious aim to turn 00:08:46.58\00:08:48.30 public policy in their direction. 00:08:48.33\00:08:50.32 I think that's-- it's not necessarily evil 00:08:50.35\00:08:53.09 but it's using the voice of the world 00:08:53.12\00:08:54.72 instead of the voice of God. 00:08:54.75\00:08:56.50 You know, we can understand that civil authority 00:08:56.53\00:08:58.82 can follow this strategy or another strategy. 00:08:58.85\00:09:01.67 I can understand that a government 00:09:01.70\00:09:03.28 has to protect its citizen and so on, yes. 00:09:03.31\00:09:06.96 But when it comes 00:09:06.99\00:09:08.36 to the religious people and Christian, 00:09:08.39\00:09:10.29 you know, the power we have is a power of love. 00:09:10.32\00:09:14.91 It's a power of our own conviction. 00:09:14.94\00:09:17.21 It means when we say that we have to use a weapon 00:09:17.24\00:09:19.97 against the other we underestimate 00:09:20.00\00:09:22.70 the power of love 00:09:22.73\00:09:24.54 and we underestimate the power of God. 00:09:24.57\00:09:26.56 The weapons of the Spirit. 00:09:26.59\00:09:27.96 The weapon of the Spirit and the power of God, you know? 00:09:27.99\00:09:30.59 God will help. God will protect. 00:09:30.62\00:09:33.09 And don't believe that every thing is in your hand. 00:09:33.12\00:09:37.52 And we have to believe more in God 00:09:37.55\00:09:40.06 and to put our life in His hand. 00:09:40.09\00:09:43.88 So as we look at this world-- 00:09:43.91\00:09:45.84 we get it--we're running out of time, 00:09:45.87\00:09:47.87 but I know you and I and other Seventh Day Adventist 00:09:47.90\00:09:51.15 share a common prophetic world view. 00:09:51.18\00:09:53.79 And we realize that we're in the last days. 00:09:53.82\00:09:56.78 Do we see God's purpose is being worked out? 00:09:56.81\00:10:00.83 And it's possible that sometimes we see 00:10:00.86\00:10:03.41 more evidence of Satan frustrating God's will. 00:10:03.44\00:10:07.44 You know, that's true, Lincoln. 00:10:07.47\00:10:09.95 You know, who is the prince of this world? 00:10:09.98\00:10:12.63 Exactly, because some people say, 00:10:12.66\00:10:14.03 oh, its God's will. God wants this. 00:10:14.06\00:10:15.43 I don't think so. 00:10:15.46\00:10:16.83 Much of what I see in this world 00:10:16.86\00:10:18.23 is evidence of the prince of this world at work, 00:10:18.26\00:10:19.97 not of God. Yeah, absolutely. 00:10:20.00\00:10:21.37 We're on the battlefield. 00:10:21.40\00:10:23.11 And we're on the side of the winner 00:10:23.14\00:10:25.47 but still the battle is still going on. 00:10:25.50\00:10:28.21 And we know that the winner is Jesus at the end. 00:10:28.24\00:10:31.35 But still the battle is here. 00:10:31.38\00:10:33.41 But many battles, the classic battles of the ancient days, 00:10:33.44\00:10:37.71 you know, massive armies, 00:10:37.74\00:10:39.26 two or three hundred thousand on each side 00:10:39.29\00:10:41.45 and you couldn't tell-- in fact, sometimes it appeared 00:10:41.48\00:10:44.40 the battle was going the other direction. 00:10:44.43\00:10:46.29 Some pivotal event happened and it was a total wreck. 00:10:46.32\00:10:49.48 And so I think we have to trust that in some way, 00:10:49.51\00:10:54.64 at the last moment, I think God's gonna show himself. 00:10:54.67\00:10:57.46 Not necessarily solve it all 00:10:57.49\00:10:58.86 because the solution is another world. Yeah. 00:10:58.89\00:11:01.01 But there has to be a manifest sign of God's favor 00:11:01.04\00:11:05.03 on the persecuted few, I think. Yeah. 00:11:05.06\00:11:07.17 And we're still looking for that by and large 00:11:07.20\00:11:09.23 because many people-- not all die 00:11:09.26\00:11:12.37 but many people--some die, many people lose their jobs, 00:11:12.40\00:11:15.77 socially disadvantaged for their faith 00:11:15.80\00:11:17.53 and we can't solve all of that. 00:11:17.56\00:11:18.93 And there's not clear evidence 00:11:18.96\00:11:20.33 that God intervenes directly. Yeah. 00:11:20.36\00:11:22.37 I think a Christian and a person of faith to some point 00:11:22.40\00:11:26.40 just has to stick with their faith 00:11:26.43\00:11:27.80 and take the consequences. Yeah. 00:11:27.83\00:11:29.20 This is what we have to do. 00:11:29.23\00:11:30.60 We have to believe that 00:11:30.63\00:11:32.00 religious freedom is a gift from God. 00:11:32.03\00:11:34.26 And also we have to think about those who are persecuted. 00:11:34.29\00:11:37.72 You know, we are living in a world 00:11:37.75\00:11:39.13 where everyday people are loosing their job, 00:11:39.16\00:11:41.91 people are arrested, put in jail. 00:11:41.94\00:11:43.97 We see that more and more churches are burned. 00:11:44.00\00:11:46.82 Christian and other, you know, are burned too or killed. 00:11:46.85\00:11:50.46 We want--we don't want to accept that. 00:11:50.49\00:11:54.10 For us, it's just the opposite of what we believe. 00:11:54.13\00:11:57.82 And this is why we have to think 00:11:57.85\00:11:59.34 and to pray for those who are persecuted 00:11:59.37\00:12:01.53 and also to help them. 00:12:01.56\00:12:03.73 Years ago I remember being quite captivated 00:12:05.25\00:12:07.96 by an ongoing television series called the World at War. 00:12:07.99\00:12:12.23 It was characterized by an introductory sequence 00:12:12.26\00:12:14.84 where there were flames licking up around the title 00:12:14.87\00:12:18.19 to illustrate the destruction 00:12:18.22\00:12:19.87 that came upon the world in World War II. 00:12:19.90\00:12:23.21 But, you know, in a very real way 00:12:23.24\00:12:25.74 when we talk religious liberty and religion 00:12:25.77\00:12:28.42 and the end of the world, we are talking about 00:12:28.45\00:12:30.60 a world at war against God's ways. 00:12:30.63\00:12:33.54 In Milton's Paradise Lost. 00:12:33.57\00:12:35.67 He has Satan declare war, continual war against heaven 00:12:35.70\00:12:40.41 and that's really what I see. 00:12:40.44\00:12:43.26 But I am encouraged to remember the words of Jesus 00:12:43.29\00:12:46.42 when he said, "In this world you will have trouble 00:12:46.45\00:12:50.46 but have no fear or fear not 00:12:50.49\00:12:52.47 because I've overcome the world." 00:12:52.50\00:12:55.57 It's our challenge when we stand up for religious freedom 00:12:55.60\00:12:59.59 to tackle all the powers and principalities 00:12:59.62\00:13:02.57 that are dedicated toward 00:13:02.60\00:13:04.04 diminishing religious freedom, thwarting faith. 00:13:04.07\00:13:07.64 But it's our privilege to remember too 00:13:07.67\00:13:10.08 that the end is sure, that religious liberty, 00:13:10.11\00:13:13.98 God's way will win at one day and one day soon. 00:13:14.01\00:13:20.35 For Liberty Insider this is Lincoln Steed. 00:13:20.38\00:13:23.81
