Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:22.88\00:00:24.96 This is the program that brings you 00:00:24.99\00:00:26.56 up-to-date news, views, discussion, 00:00:26.59\00:00:29.21 and information on religious liberty around the world. 00:00:29.24\00:00:32.66 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine. 00:00:32.69\00:00:36.63 And my guest on the program is Dr. John Graz, 00:00:36.66\00:00:40.40 director of religious-- 00:00:40.43\00:00:42.20 the department of religious liberty 00:00:42.23\00:00:43.65 for our world Seventh-day Adventist headquarters. 00:00:43.68\00:00:46.44 Yeah, I am very happy to be here. Thank you. 00:00:46.47\00:00:50.74 I was trying to think of a connection with world-- 00:00:50.77\00:00:52.61 world is a loaded word 00:00:52.64\00:00:54.30 but really that's-- you work in the entire world. 00:00:54.33\00:00:57.01 Yeah, I'm traveling around the world. 00:00:57.04\00:00:58.91 Absolutely. When we talk about religious liberty. 00:00:58.94\00:01:01.26 It's easy in the United States, I think you know. 00:01:01.29\00:01:03.29 It's all about the constitution. 00:01:03.32\00:01:04.69 It's all about the Supreme Court. Yeah. 00:01:04.72\00:01:06.55 That's a hugely bigger picture than that. 00:01:06.58\00:01:09.31 And I think you're able to see that. 00:01:09.34\00:01:11.41 Looking at the world, 00:01:11.44\00:01:13.32 what do you see as trends or challenges? 00:01:13.35\00:01:15.86 You know, where are we globally with religious liberty? 00:01:15.89\00:01:18.84 Yeah, I think one of the big challenges today is 00:01:18.87\00:01:21.63 really the separation between church and state 00:01:21.66\00:01:24.56 because in some countries they see the united, 00:01:24.59\00:01:29.32 you know, the union between church and state as big factor, 00:01:29.35\00:01:34.67 an important factor of building a strong state-- 00:01:34.70\00:01:38.51 A coherent society, right? 00:01:38.54\00:01:39.91 Yeah, strong society. 00:01:39.94\00:01:41.31 It means, you know, the state take care about 00:01:41.34\00:01:43.29 all these practical issues, taxes and so on. 00:01:43.32\00:01:46.65 And the church try to educate people. 00:01:46.68\00:01:49.96 And we can understand, you know, it has always been the same. 00:01:49.99\00:01:53.52 But of course, in the global vision of religious freedom 00:01:53.55\00:01:57.79 you may have the question, what about those 00:01:57.82\00:02:00.66 who are not following the main church 00:02:00.69\00:02:02.76 or the church which has been recognized by the state. 00:02:02.79\00:02:06.15 Because their state wants to deal with a big organization. 00:02:06.18\00:02:09.87 Not wait for 30, 50, 1,000 small organization. 00:02:09.90\00:02:14.54 It means the state will give 00:02:14.57\00:02:16.06 the priority to the main organization. 00:02:16.09\00:02:19.94 And what about the others? 00:02:19.97\00:02:21.80 And as I said very often 00:02:21.83\00:02:24.04 the temptation when you have this kind of alliance 00:02:24.07\00:02:27.43 is everyone try to be-- 00:02:27.46\00:02:29.82 to receive something from the other. 00:02:29.85\00:02:31.82 It means the state will ask the church or the main church 00:02:31.85\00:02:35.96 to support them, to help them 00:02:35.99\00:02:38.90 to implement some laws and so on. 00:02:38.93\00:02:41.49 The other side, you know, the church will ask the state 00:02:41.52\00:02:45.09 to help them in building churches or mosque and so on 00:02:45.12\00:02:50.16 but also in protecting them 00:02:50.19\00:02:52.65 from the attack of other groups. 00:02:52.68\00:02:54.85 Now aren't there inherent risks in this for-- 00:02:54.88\00:02:56.98 Yeah, dissidence and heretics are we know that. 00:02:57.01\00:03:01.16 And also people from other religious group. 00:03:01.19\00:03:04.88 It means we have to be very careful about that 00:03:04.91\00:03:07.88 because that's a human tendency and it can happen everywhere 00:03:07.91\00:03:11.76 because it has already happened in the past. 00:03:11.79\00:03:15.11 And apparently it could be a good way 00:03:15.14\00:03:19.73 to build a strong state 00:03:19.76\00:03:21.51 but when it comes to freedom it's not a good way. 00:03:21.54\00:03:24.41 It's too dangerous. 00:03:24.44\00:03:25.98 And of course every state and every church that-- 00:03:26.01\00:03:29.05 every variety of religion that exists in those places. 00:03:29.08\00:03:32.51 Believes that it's the appropriate and correct one. 00:03:32.54\00:03:35.75 Yeah. And so they're acting 00:03:35.78\00:03:37.15 as though they own the universe. 00:03:37.18\00:03:38.76 And then you have a problem when the neighboring religion, 00:03:38.79\00:03:41.48 neighboring country's religion comes 00:03:41.51\00:03:43.72 and it's seen as threat from a country not just another region. 00:03:43.75\00:03:46.70 Yeah, right. And, you know, at the end. 00:03:46.73\00:03:49.15 You know, it's a question of power. 00:03:49.18\00:03:51.06 Of course in the deal you got power. 00:03:51.09\00:03:53.83 You got much more power if you are the state 00:03:53.86\00:03:56.67 and if you're the church or the religion, 00:03:56.70\00:03:59.05 you also get more power. 00:03:59.08\00:04:01.81 You know, like a case--like we've a case like, you know, 00:04:01.84\00:04:05.92 Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani in Iran. 00:04:05.95\00:04:09.08 You know, a man who is a good citizen, 00:04:09.11\00:04:11.73 a good father and so on. 00:04:11.76\00:04:14.00 He's in jail and he can be executed. 00:04:14.03\00:04:17.30 Why? He's not can be. 00:04:17.33\00:04:19.00 That's the-- He has been- 00:04:19.03\00:04:21.05 He's been convicted on an appeal 00:04:21.08\00:04:23.05 that was upheld that he will be hanged, 00:04:23.08\00:04:25.37 I think, hanged for his faith-- Hanged, yeah. 00:04:25.40\00:04:27.22 And then we're waiting. 00:04:27.25\00:04:28.70 Fortunately, because the reaction of the world, 00:04:28.73\00:04:31.21 do you know, and people were in favor of religious freedom 00:04:31.24\00:04:34.35 he is still alive. 00:04:34.38\00:04:36.04 But his family--whole his family is under pressure. 00:04:36.07\00:04:40.31 And, you know, he has just one word to say that, 00:04:40.34\00:04:42.85 you know, I recant and he will be free. 00:04:42.88\00:04:45.66 Is he a criminal? No. 00:04:45.69\00:04:48.84 Is he a danger for his country? No. 00:04:48.87\00:04:51.98 What is the problem? 00:04:52.01\00:04:53.38 The problem is, it's a religious problem. 00:04:53.41\00:04:56.14 And in a country where church 00:04:56.17\00:04:58.37 and or religion and state are together, 00:04:58.40\00:05:01.30 a religious problem become a state problem. 00:05:01.33\00:05:05.46 It means he just changed his religion. 00:05:05.49\00:05:08.78 You know, when he was 13 00:05:08.81\00:05:11.23 he did not believed in anything 00:05:11.26\00:05:12.63 but when he was 18-- He was born as Muslim. 00:05:12.66\00:05:14.94 Yeah, he was born. 00:05:14.97\00:05:16.34 Even he said that he was never really practicing 00:05:16.37\00:05:19.51 but they ask his family, family, yes. 00:05:19.54\00:05:23.10 And when he was 18, he became Christian. 00:05:23.13\00:05:26.40 Then he became pastor. 00:05:26.43\00:05:28.12 That's a crime because it's an apostasy. 00:05:28.15\00:05:31.25 And, you know, you have 00:05:31.28\00:05:32.65 a religious traditions about apostasy. 00:05:32.68\00:05:36.95 You know, when you commit apostasy 00:05:36.98\00:05:39.01 you should be just dis-fellowshipped 00:05:39.04\00:05:40.66 from your church, that's all. 00:05:40.69\00:05:42.06 In this case, the country and the religion 00:05:42.09\00:05:43.55 are all wrapped up together. 00:05:43.58\00:05:44.95 Yeah, exactly. In this case, your right 00:05:44.98\00:05:48.07 to follow your--you know, your desire or your wish 00:05:48.10\00:05:52.65 according to your conscious becomes a crime 00:05:52.68\00:05:57.01 according to the state. 00:05:57.04\00:05:58.62 It means you become a criminal 00:05:58.65\00:06:01.72 because you have religious conviction. 00:06:01.75\00:06:04.50 Why? Because state and religion are together. 00:06:04.53\00:06:08.50 It's a good point you're making. 00:06:08.53\00:06:09.90 I've often tried to point this out. 00:06:09.93\00:06:12.41 In the United States the constitution 00:06:12.44\00:06:14.11 mandates the separation of church and the state. 00:06:14.14\00:06:16.35 So in that regard, it's a very--not unique 00:06:16.38\00:06:20.24 but that describes the American experiment. 00:06:20.27\00:06:23.85 But really, everywhere in the world 00:06:23.88\00:06:25.98 that's the safest model, isn't it? Yeah-- 00:06:26.01\00:06:28.20 Even thought very few national models 00:06:28.23\00:06:31.93 are set up that way. 00:06:31.96\00:06:33.40 Even Canada right on the border 00:06:33.43\00:06:35.10 doesn't have a separation of church-- 00:06:35.13\00:06:36.94 This is why, you know, it's so important 00:06:36.97\00:06:38.84 to define religious freedom in the U.S. 00:06:38.87\00:06:40.90 because the U.S. has been a model 00:06:40.93\00:06:42.95 and still is a model for the world. 00:06:42.98\00:06:45.34 And it has to stay. 00:06:45.37\00:06:46.76 But it cannot be if nobody define 00:06:46.79\00:06:50.14 and promote religious freedom. 00:06:50.17\00:06:51.54 As I said, you know, the day where we will have 00:06:51.57\00:06:54.59 30 or 10 big religious freedom festival, 00:06:54.62\00:06:59.35 maybe, people will be more aware of that. 00:06:59.38\00:07:01.96 You said that in another program. Yeah, I said that. 00:07:01.99\00:07:04.30 And I can tell that the-- the viewers 00:07:04.33\00:07:07.13 if they don't know by now you are committed 00:07:07.16\00:07:10.17 to producing these festivals all over the world 00:07:10.20\00:07:13.39 as a way to bring awareness to religious liberty 00:07:13.42\00:07:15.94 by a public celebration and discussion with value. 00:07:15.97\00:07:19.76 You know, I was invited to give lecture in colleges, 00:07:19.79\00:07:22.99 public college, community colleges, 00:07:23.02\00:07:25.44 universities, and also academies. 00:07:25.47\00:07:28.28 And I asked the question to people. 00:07:28.31\00:07:29.91 How many of you were born in one religion? 00:07:29.94\00:07:34.32 And how many of you changed or your family changed? 00:07:34.35\00:07:38.09 And a number-- and I said to them-- 00:07:38.12\00:07:40.44 What response did you get in different? 00:07:40.47\00:07:42.06 Yeah, many, many changed, you know? 00:07:42.09\00:07:43.76 Many change, their family change, and they change. 00:07:43.79\00:07:46.13 I said, you know, if you were living in such a country 00:07:46.16\00:07:48.58 around the world, you will be arrested, 00:07:48.61\00:07:50.75 put in jail, and may be sentence to death. 00:07:50.78\00:07:53.63 Do you want to live in such a country? 00:07:53.66\00:07:57.03 That very clear, where you can be executed 00:07:57.06\00:07:59.97 just because, you know, your parents 00:08:00.00\00:08:01.96 or yourself decided to change your religion. 00:08:01.99\00:08:04.73 Yeah. But that's happened. 00:08:04.76\00:08:06.98 Asia Bibi's another case. 00:08:07.01\00:08:08.91 Still, you know, she is still alive. 00:08:08.94\00:08:11.29 She was just a farmer working in a farm. 00:08:11.32\00:08:14.92 It means she was not really a rich man-- 00:08:14.95\00:08:17.66 Is it in Pakistan? Pakistan, yeah. 00:08:17.69\00:08:19.47 A very, you know, poor class. 00:08:19.50\00:08:21.54 She was working and one day 00:08:21.57\00:08:22.97 she brought water to her friends, 00:08:23.00\00:08:26.44 women friends, you know? 00:08:26.47\00:08:28.11 And they refused to drink her water. 00:08:28.14\00:08:30.89 And she asked why? 00:08:30.92\00:08:32.42 She said, because you are impure and the water will be impure. 00:08:32.45\00:08:36.24 So what does it mean? 00:08:36.27\00:08:37.67 Not clean, you know. What does it mean? 00:08:37.70\00:08:39.62 Means because you are Christian we cannot drink your water. 00:08:39.65\00:08:42.99 Everything you touch become impure, you know? 00:08:43.02\00:08:46.61 And she said that-- but I don't know-- 00:08:46.64\00:08:49.28 we don't know really what she said. 00:08:49.31\00:08:50.68 Maybe she said-- 00:08:50.71\00:08:52.13 There was clearly some sort of an argument. 00:08:52.16\00:08:54.26 Yeah. She was probably very careful 00:08:54.29\00:08:57.28 but she may have, you know, some, huh, 00:08:57.31\00:08:59.56 that's nothing or why are you doing that? 00:08:59.59\00:09:02.70 That was enough. 00:09:02.73\00:09:04.10 Few days later, you know, the police came. 00:09:04.13\00:09:06.05 They arrest her for blasphemy. 00:09:06.08\00:09:09.24 She's in jail, she was defended by the governor of Punjab. 00:09:09.27\00:09:13.18 They kill him. 00:09:13.21\00:09:15.27 She was defended by the minister of the government-- 00:09:15.30\00:09:18.24 For religious affairs. For religious affairs. 00:09:18.27\00:09:20.81 They kill him and she is still in jail. 00:09:20.84\00:09:24.31 You know, do you want to live in a country like that 00:09:24.34\00:09:26.10 where if you say something 00:09:26.13\00:09:28.21 or give a kind of gesture about a religion 00:09:28.24\00:09:32.35 or the leader of a religion 00:09:32.38\00:09:33.75 you would be arrested and be executed? 00:09:33.78\00:09:35.99 Yeah. And you say, no, 00:09:36.02\00:09:37.50 thats-- it doesn't happen. 00:09:37.53\00:09:39.43 Yes, it happens in several countries around the world. 00:09:39.46\00:09:43.31 Now I should not so much defend Pakistan as qualified. 00:09:43.34\00:09:47.43 Pakistan, it's like a double hazard. 00:09:47.46\00:09:49.56 There are provisions built into the law 00:09:49.59\00:09:53.58 against conversion so on. 00:09:53.61\00:09:55.25 But on other levels the law 00:09:55.28\00:09:56.75 there is relatively benign. 00:09:56.78\00:09:59.36 But the society and the Imams, who regulate their religion, 00:09:59.39\00:10:05.01 can be even more aggressive than the state. 00:10:05.04\00:10:07.48 And yet the state will not interfere. 00:10:07.51\00:10:10.06 Like for example, in Pakistan, I know, 00:10:10.09\00:10:12.45 that it's a common practice, 00:10:12.48\00:10:14.01 if a child--usually a daughter tries to leave 00:10:14.04\00:10:16.41 their religious faith that the family will kill her. 00:10:16.44\00:10:21.13 Never once has the state prosecuted them for that. 00:10:21.16\00:10:24.71 And even you can be sure that the people 00:10:24.74\00:10:26.76 in the government disagree with that. 00:10:26.79\00:10:28.89 Yes-- They disagree. 00:10:28.92\00:10:30.31 They are not game to even try. 00:10:30.34\00:10:32.17 The society would resist them or assassinate-- 00:10:32.20\00:10:34.65 The governor of Punjab, 00:10:34.68\00:10:36.41 you know, he disagreed officially. 00:10:36.44\00:10:39.04 He was a Muslim-- His bodyguard killed him 00:10:39.07\00:10:41.55 and he's being hailed as a hero. 00:10:41.58\00:10:43.16 Yeah and exactly. 00:10:43.19\00:10:45.32 It means, you have also to deal with the culture of the country, 00:10:45.35\00:10:48.96 with the religion of the country. 00:10:48.99\00:10:50.79 And it's not always easy for the government 00:10:50.82\00:10:53.98 to really to try to be-- to follow more-- 00:10:54.01\00:10:57.84 to give more freedom or to accept more freedom. 00:10:57.87\00:11:00.55 But still we cannot say nothing about that. 00:11:00.58\00:11:03.80 We say, you know, they are courageous people. 00:11:03.83\00:11:06.89 And--but we disagree with that. 00:11:06.92\00:11:08.86 People should have the right to decide. 00:11:08.89\00:11:11.32 And, you know, sometime you may believe that, 00:11:11.35\00:11:14.94 is it necessary, you know, 00:11:14.97\00:11:16.71 all these trouble for just a religion? 00:11:16.74\00:11:20.08 You know, that's a question people ask, you know? 00:11:20.11\00:11:22.53 You know, look what is the result? 00:11:22.56\00:11:24.12 You have people have been killed 00:11:24.15\00:11:25.70 just for question of religion. 00:11:25.73\00:11:27.40 Why everyone keep what they have, 00:11:27.43\00:11:30.46 keep your religion and you will have no problems. 00:11:30.49\00:11:33.35 Why do you want to have a problem? 00:11:33.38\00:11:35.04 Why do you preach what you believe in countries 00:11:35.07\00:11:39.65 where people will have a problem? 00:11:39.68\00:11:41.55 You know, I mentioned another day, 00:11:41.58\00:11:44.11 you know, this young mother who have been persecuted 00:11:44.14\00:11:47.78 just because she accepted in watching a program here. 00:11:47.81\00:11:51.62 You know, she was living in a country 00:11:51.65\00:11:53.02 where you don't have any religious freedom. 00:11:53.05\00:11:55.85 And now she lost her family, 00:11:55.88\00:11:57.98 her job, her house, her children, 00:11:58.01\00:12:01.57 probably, two just because she became Christian. 00:12:01.60\00:12:04.96 Now one thing that's worth mentioning-- 00:12:04.99\00:12:06.72 quite a people saying this, 00:12:06.75\00:12:08.79 you know, why risk all this just for religion? 00:12:08.82\00:12:11.22 The society's and the attitudes toward the gamut of behavior 00:12:11.25\00:12:16.02 in those countries is such that if it wasn't religion 00:12:16.05\00:12:20.26 then they would be equally punished 00:12:20.29\00:12:22.23 if they had a divergent political viewpoint. 00:12:22.26\00:12:24.83 What it really is, is an attempt to control people's thinking. 00:12:24.86\00:12:28.41 Yeah. And so we need to fight that. 00:12:28.44\00:12:30.77 And the benefit is that there is social freedom 00:12:30.80\00:12:34.55 as well as religious freedom. 00:12:34.58\00:12:35.95 It operates on several levels. 00:12:35.98\00:12:38.15 We'll be right back after a short break 00:12:38.18\00:12:40.01 to continue this very interesting discussion 00:12:40.04\00:12:42.09 of how the world turns as far as religious liberty. 00:12:42.12\00:12:45.46
