Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.33\00:00:08.56 Before the break with guest Dr. John Graz, 00:00:08.59\00:00:11.55 we were talking about the last Liberty Dinner 00:00:11.58\00:00:14.81 at the Canadian Embassy in Washington. 00:00:14.84\00:00:18.49 I really should explain where that embassy is. 00:00:18.52\00:00:22.07 Beautiful building, beautiful building. 00:00:22.10\00:00:23.50 Yeah. Not everybody 00:00:23.53\00:00:25.09 of course has had the privilege to be in Washington D.C. 00:00:25.12\00:00:27.27 But most people, I'm sure who are watching this program 00:00:27.30\00:00:29.70 have seen pictures of Washington and there's the U.S. capital, 00:00:29.73\00:00:33.56 sits up on a bit of a hill in Pennsylvania--I'm sorry, 00:00:33.59\00:00:36.87 I don't wanna reach to it-- 00:00:36.90\00:00:38.27 but Pennsylvania Avenue stretches 00:00:38.30\00:00:39.69 in front of the lower part of the capital 00:00:39.72\00:00:42.08 all the way down Pennsylvania Avenue. 00:00:42.11\00:00:48.08 And then of course, in another spoke almost parallel 00:00:48.11\00:00:51.88 is the reflecting pool, and the Washington monument. 00:00:51.91\00:00:55.45 So this is the very heart 00:00:55.48\00:00:56.85 of the historic Washington. One of biggest place, yeah. 00:00:56.88\00:00:59.08 And just about a block down Pennsylvania Avenue, 00:00:59.11\00:01:04.20 on the main boulevard, looking straight 00:01:04.23\00:01:06.84 at the capital is the Canadian Embassy, yeah. 00:01:06.87\00:01:08.92 And built in the same massive stone structure 00:01:08.95\00:01:13.78 that looks like it's always been there, 00:01:13.81\00:01:15.24 sort of a neo-classical style, is this Canadian Embassy. 00:01:15.27\00:01:18.54 And you don't know at first if it is a museum, 00:01:18.57\00:01:20.70 if it is a--that's beautiful. Yeah, yeah. 00:01:20.73\00:01:22.61 Beautiful building, yeah. 00:01:22.64\00:01:24.01 So, we were privileged to be able to use that facility, 00:01:24.04\00:01:27.46 and for them to host-- And it shows, 00:01:27.49\00:01:28.89 you know, the respect the Liberty Dinner receive now, yes. 00:01:28.92\00:01:33.47 Because being invited by an embassy, 00:01:33.50\00:01:35.84 it's not--knowing that, you know, 00:01:35.87\00:01:37.55 behind you have an Adventist church, 00:01:37.58\00:01:39.35 you have several organization and so on, 00:01:39.38\00:01:40.98 but still, you know, you have been invited. 00:01:41.01\00:01:42.94 We have been invited by the embassy. 00:01:42.97\00:01:44.83 And the ambassador was there, of course. 00:01:44.86\00:01:46.98 Now I should mention, I meant to before the break, 00:01:47.01\00:01:49.74 but we honored-- Richard Land. 00:01:49.77\00:01:54.80 Well, I was thinking about 00:01:54.83\00:01:56.20 saying something about the speaker, 00:01:56.23\00:01:58.47 the foreign minister, he was given an award. 00:01:58.50\00:02:02.22 It really wasn't to him personally, 00:02:02.25\00:02:04.19 it was really him representing the government. 00:02:04.22\00:02:07.38 We wanted to honor them 00:02:07.41\00:02:08.78 for their commitment to religious liberty. 00:02:08.81\00:02:10.74 But then, personally, we honored Dr. Richard Land, 00:02:10.77\00:02:14.17 the ethicist with the Southern Baptist, 00:02:14.20\00:02:16.29 and the religious liberty leader. 00:02:16.32\00:02:19.04 Now we don't always agree 00:02:19.07\00:02:20.44 with what he does-- Of course, of course. 00:02:20.47\00:02:22.62 But we know, that he is a champion 00:02:22.65\00:02:24.66 for religious freedom. 00:02:24.69\00:02:26.06 It's just that he applies it in ways 00:02:26.09\00:02:27.46 that we're sometimes uncomfortable with. 00:02:27.49\00:02:29.63 But the Baptists generally have 00:02:29.66\00:02:32.03 a very strong commitment to religious freedom-- 00:02:32.06\00:02:34.52 We honored several of them you know, 00:02:34.55\00:02:36.09 Denton Lotz, who is the President of the I.R.L.A. 00:02:36.12\00:02:38.75 but he was also a great voice 00:02:38.78\00:02:41.44 around the world for religious freedom. 00:02:41.47\00:02:43.03 He was honored and also Robert Ambassador Seiple, right. 00:02:43.06\00:02:47.14 And after he was honored 00:02:47.17\00:02:48.54 by the Richmond First Freedom Center, 00:02:48.57\00:02:53.07 it mean several of people 00:02:53.10\00:02:54.70 who received the award from our dinner, 00:02:54.73\00:02:58.06 received also award from some other organization. 00:02:58.09\00:03:02.47 And which is interesting that they mentioned in their C.V. 00:03:02.50\00:03:05.55 the award of religious freedom. Of course. 00:03:05.58\00:03:07.47 Given by us. It means, that you know, 00:03:07.50\00:03:09.62 it's not just an event. 00:03:09.65\00:03:11.11 It's an event which continues in time. 00:03:11.14\00:03:14.94 And of course, imagine that when you receive an award, 00:03:14.97\00:03:17.90 Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and so on received the award. 00:03:17.93\00:03:21.79 We sign, and we have the logo of the Liberty Magazine, 00:03:21.82\00:03:25.06 International Religious Liberty Association. 00:03:25.09\00:03:27.48 It means that's, that's not just one event, 00:03:27.51\00:03:30.89 it has something which continues. 00:03:30.92\00:03:32.29 Well, I believe that we leave 00:03:32.32\00:03:34.41 an imprint with the government, 00:03:34.44\00:03:35.88 with the ambassadors, with the other NGOs and so on. 00:03:35.91\00:03:39.62 Even if they don't always agree with us, 00:03:39.65\00:03:41.41 we're part of their history. Yeah. 00:03:41.44\00:03:43.68 I don't know that I've mentioned on this program before, 00:03:43.71\00:03:45.70 but I was really taken, 00:03:45.73\00:03:47.71 recently when I was reading a journalistic account 00:03:47.74\00:03:50.27 of the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya. 00:03:50.30\00:03:55.26 The journalist said how with the crowd, 00:03:55.29\00:03:57.16 they surged into his private living quarter 00:03:57.19\00:04:00.84 the day that he died. 00:04:00.87\00:04:02.35 You know, the mob took over. 00:04:02.38\00:04:04.19 And there, in his inner quarters, 00:04:04.22\00:04:06.94 this journalist, first one to arrive they said, 00:04:06.97\00:04:09.12 there was very little there. 00:04:09.15\00:04:10.52 Just some family pictures on the wall, 00:04:10.55\00:04:12.99 a picture of Condoleezza Rice, which I thought was funny 00:04:13.02\00:04:15.62 because he had, we know, he had a thing for her. 00:04:15.65\00:04:17.83 He sent her a mash letter once. 00:04:17.86\00:04:19.58 So there's a picture of Condoleezza Rice, 00:04:19.61\00:04:21.42 and then the journalist said very particularly, 00:04:21.45\00:04:24.09 next to that was a large framed certificate 00:04:24.12\00:04:31.33 of his membership in the I.C.P.A. 00:04:31.36\00:04:34.94 Which again my father had done, the International Commission 00:04:34.97\00:04:37.46 for the Prevention of Alcoholism, 00:04:37.49\00:04:39.12 which for temperance is the equivalent of the I.R.L.A. 00:04:39.15\00:04:41.62 Yeah, yeah, right. 00:04:41.65\00:04:43.02 And here, you know, we never endorsed Gaddafi, 00:04:43.05\00:04:46.37 but decades before, I remember-- 00:04:46.40\00:04:49.22 It was open to a better health for his people. 00:04:49.25\00:04:50.80 Met with him and some of his associates, 00:04:50.83\00:04:53.77 and he'd been signed up and that was so important 00:04:53.80\00:04:56.75 that he'd kept it in his private quarters. 00:04:56.78\00:04:58.89 It's the only membership thing there. 00:04:58.92\00:05:00.94 And so we're planting ideas with these people, yeah. 00:05:00.97\00:05:04.96 And in this case about dinner, the idea of the high and exalted 00:05:04.99\00:05:08.87 and irrevocable value of religious liberty. 00:05:08.90\00:05:11.76 And you know, that's so important to say 00:05:11.79\00:05:14.53 thank you to people who are defending religious freedom. 00:05:14.56\00:05:17.64 They are defending our rights. They are defending us. 00:05:17.67\00:05:20.75 And as I said, that they don't have a lot of opportunity. 00:05:20.78\00:05:24.30 They don't meet a lot of people saying, 00:05:24.33\00:05:26.39 thank you for defending religious freedom. 00:05:26.42\00:05:28.65 I remember visiting China and so on, you know. 00:05:28.68\00:05:31.26 When I visit country, 00:05:31.29\00:05:32.66 I talk with people who are defending religious freedom. 00:05:32.69\00:05:35.13 Most of the time, they are just in margin of the society, 00:05:35.16\00:05:38.97 because that's not like if you defend economy, and so on, 00:05:39.00\00:05:42.54 you know, aberrant things, you are defending minorities. 00:05:42.57\00:05:46.85 One day I remember, I was in a country in Europe 00:05:46.88\00:05:49.59 and someone came and I knew 00:05:49.62\00:05:51.41 that he had very strong political ambition. 00:05:51.44\00:05:55.82 He wanted to be-- to run for president. 00:05:55.85\00:05:58.11 And he said "you know, 00:05:58.14\00:05:59.62 I want to organize an association 00:05:59.65\00:06:03.20 for defending religious freedom." 00:06:03.23\00:06:05.95 And I said to him "think twice, if you are interested having 00:06:05.98\00:06:11.64 a great political career, it may be not the best thing. 00:06:11.67\00:06:15.58 Because if you defend religious freedom, 00:06:15.61\00:06:17.57 you will have to defend people who are not popular, 00:06:17.60\00:06:22.13 and you may lose vote." 00:06:22.16\00:06:23.99 And he thought you know, 00:06:24.02\00:06:25.39 and I continued "but you have to be very convinced"-- 00:06:25.42\00:06:27.96 Sounds like the rich young ruler. 00:06:27.99\00:06:29.67 Very committed. 00:06:29.70\00:06:31.07 It means you have to be committed enough to say, okay, 00:06:31.10\00:06:33.29 I will probably lose the election 00:06:33.32\00:06:35.32 but I will continue to defend religious freedom. Yeah. 00:06:35.35\00:06:37.99 And the guy look at me, and that was the end. 00:06:38.02\00:06:41.30 I've never, never heard anything about his association, 00:06:41.33\00:06:45.56 because you know, when you defend some values, 00:06:45.59\00:06:48.56 don't expect you will get a lot of support. 00:06:48.59\00:06:51.24 And these people are making the sacrifice 00:06:51.27\00:06:54.01 like our good friend who died in January, 00:06:54.04\00:06:57.45 Professor Abdelfattah Amor. You know, he is a Muslim, 00:06:57.48\00:07:01.80 defender of religious freedom around the world. 00:07:01.83\00:07:03.85 He was the Special Rapporteur for the United Nations. 00:07:03.88\00:07:06.18 United Nations Special Rapporteur, 00:07:06.21\00:07:07.83 you know, he said something one day which really moved me. 00:07:07.86\00:07:11.87 He said you know, "You are sincere. 00:07:11.90\00:07:15.72 I make a difference with many, many organization. 00:07:15.75\00:07:18.77 Your organization. You are sincere, 00:07:18.80\00:07:21.90 when you defend religious freedom." 00:07:21.93\00:07:24.15 It was beautiful. The correct prize-- 00:07:24.18\00:07:26.14 Yeah, yeah, exactly. It means, time to time. 00:07:26.17\00:07:29.78 Nobody was doing that. We have to do, 00:07:29.81\00:07:31.99 we have to create event and to say publicly, 00:07:32.02\00:07:35.77 "thank you for defending religious freedom." 00:07:35.80\00:07:38.42 And I think also that we should also remember those in the past, 00:07:38.45\00:07:43.31 gave their life for freedom today. 00:07:43.34\00:07:46.50 And that we go to the Festival of Religious Freedom you know, 00:07:46.53\00:07:49.50 say thank you for those who gave their life. 00:07:49.53\00:07:52.48 Because very often you know, I ask people, 00:07:52.51\00:07:54.57 "what did you do for religious freedom?" 00:07:54.60\00:07:57.43 Now you visit churches, 00:07:57.46\00:07:59.13 you talk about religious freedom, 00:07:59.16\00:08:00.53 they look at you and say "hey, 00:08:00.56\00:08:02.63 what did you do for your freedom?" 00:08:02.66\00:08:05.63 And people say "what did we do?" Did you die? 00:08:05.66\00:08:08.12 Did someone died for that? 00:08:08.15\00:08:10.71 Do you know someone here that you-- "no." 00:08:10.74\00:08:13.47 What did you do? But we do not do anything, 00:08:13.50\00:08:17.10 we just get it. Okay, you got it. 00:08:17.13\00:08:20.53 What did you say when you receive a gift? 00:08:20.56\00:08:22.39 Is it a gift? Yes, it's an important gift. 00:08:22.42\00:08:24.63 What did you say? We say thank you. 00:08:24.66\00:08:26.63 Have you already said this thank you-- 00:08:26.66\00:08:28.03 We need to be part of the dynamic of this. 00:08:28.06\00:08:30.01 Not just to suffer for it, but to proclaim it. 00:08:30.04\00:08:33.74 Yeah, and we have to create event 00:08:33.77\00:08:35.93 and to say publicly thank you, 00:08:35.96\00:08:39.60 and of course more we have people better it is. 00:08:39.63\00:08:43.63 And it's the just reward of those 00:08:43.66\00:08:46.18 who are taking risk to defend our rights. 00:08:46.21\00:08:50.58 I hope we can communicate this to our viewers. 00:08:50.61\00:08:53.82 Maybe in some way they can carry on 00:08:53.85\00:08:56.55 what we're talking about. 00:08:56.58\00:08:57.95 Either to be part of organizing a big festival type event 00:08:57.98\00:09:02.52 or certainly within our own church, 00:09:02.55\00:09:05.32 and if you're watching in different countries, 00:09:05.35\00:09:07.93 maybe they could organize something like a Liberty Dinner. 00:09:07.96\00:09:10.94 It doesn't have to be in their nation's capital, 00:09:10.97\00:09:13.83 maybe it could be with the mayor of the local town. Exactly. 00:09:13.86\00:09:16.51 Meet with the mayor and invite some of the leading people 00:09:16.54\00:09:20.37 in the town there and put on a dinner and again, 00:09:20.40\00:09:23.20 put before them the value of religious freedom. 00:09:23.23\00:09:25.82 Thank you that this town is standing for it, 00:09:25.85\00:09:27.99 and this is what-- There is one day, 00:09:28.02\00:09:29.91 one day every week which should be 00:09:29.94\00:09:32.36 the day of religious freedom in every church, 00:09:32.39\00:09:34.25 in every Adventist churches. 00:09:34.28\00:09:36.04 You know, that's not a big problem 00:09:36.07\00:09:37.44 to invite an official and to give him a reward, 00:09:37.47\00:09:40.68 a plaque, or to organizes a dinner 00:09:40.71\00:09:43.48 with not 300 people but maybe why, 30 people. 00:09:43.51\00:09:47.56 You select people in the community 00:09:47.59\00:09:50.38 who did something. You invite them. 00:09:50.41\00:09:52.69 You give an award. And you start, 00:09:52.72\00:09:55.05 you know, to encourage people. 00:09:55.08\00:09:56.45 You start, you show that you are a part of that community. 00:09:56.48\00:09:59.45 You are not isolated, 00:09:59.48\00:10:01.49 and you want to help defend value for everyone, 00:10:01.52\00:10:04.97 not just for you. That's possible. 00:10:05.00\00:10:06.91 Many things are possible. 00:10:06.94\00:10:08.39 If you don't have the money to organize a congress, 00:10:08.42\00:10:11.00 you can invite someone and have a lecture, 00:10:11.03\00:10:13.38 public lecture about religious freedom. 00:10:13.41\00:10:16.00 And you can invite three people you select, 00:10:16.03\00:10:18.54 university professors and so on, 00:10:18.57\00:10:20.36 and have a panel about religious freedom. 00:10:20.39\00:10:23.34 Will not cost a lot, you will have publicity, 00:10:23.37\00:10:27.54 people will start to think about that. 00:10:27.57\00:10:29.93 I hope our listeners, our viewers are thinking, 00:10:29.96\00:10:33.85 because the possibilities of this are endless. 00:10:33.88\00:10:36.86 You know, some of the most radically changing movements 00:10:36.89\00:10:41.63 in society and history have started with-- 00:10:41.66\00:10:44.49 you know, now it's popular to use the term "cell" an idea 00:10:44.52\00:10:47.88 that someone's got here and they spread it 00:10:47.91\00:10:50.57 to another group, and that group spreads-- 00:10:50.60\00:10:52.46 you know the potential for something 00:10:52.49\00:10:53.86 to just blossom into a phenomenon is unlimited. 00:10:53.89\00:10:56.44 If people catch an imagination, the idea. 00:10:56.47\00:11:01.11 And yes, we did this in Washington, 00:11:01.14\00:11:02.94 yes, we've had these festivals in this or that country, 00:11:02.97\00:11:05.31 but it could happen everywhere. 00:11:05.34\00:11:06.71 Yeah, and people are interested in having this kind of meeting, 00:11:06.74\00:11:10.09 Religious Freedom Dinner in many countries, 00:11:10.12\00:11:13.31 like I talk about Philippines, and they are interested. 00:11:13.34\00:11:16.16 And it will be reinforcing to the governance 00:11:16.19\00:11:18.98 in those countries. They will cherish 00:11:19.01\00:11:20.45 religious liberty in a way that they have not before. 00:11:20.48\00:11:23.08 You know, when we defend values 00:11:23.11\00:11:25.10 so important like religious freedom, 00:11:25.13\00:11:27.33 we should not be shy to organize meeting 00:11:27.36\00:11:30.89 and to invite people, to give reward to those 00:11:30.92\00:11:34.35 who did something very well to protect our rights. 00:11:34.38\00:11:37.71 That is not just something we should do, we must do that. 00:11:37.74\00:11:41.10 We must say thank you for all those 00:11:41.13\00:11:44.83 who defend this important values, religious freedom. 00:11:44.86\00:11:48.50 One of the strongest memories I have of growing up 00:11:50.66\00:11:53.49 with Seventh Day Adventist is this part 00:11:53.52\00:11:55.92 of the pathfinder curriculum, having to learn the 23rd Psalm. 00:11:55.95\00:12:01.50 I'll of course never forget it. I remember not only 00:12:01.53\00:12:05.23 "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want", 00:12:05.26\00:12:08.10 but there's that line that says "Thou preparest a table for me 00:12:08.13\00:12:11.76 in the presence of mine enemies." 00:12:11.79\00:12:14.14 Well, when I think about the Religious Liberty Dinner, 00:12:14.17\00:12:17.40 I don't think about enemies, but I do believe that, 00:12:17.43\00:12:22.83 We don't know what the state will do. 00:12:22.86\00:12:25.84 We don't know what those other activists 00:12:25.87\00:12:30.41 that we share the table with at such events 00:12:30.44\00:12:33.12 as the Religious Liberty Dinner will do. 00:12:33.15\00:12:35.39 But we do know that when we sit down 00:12:35.42\00:12:38.45 in such an environment, the Lord, 00:12:38.48\00:12:40.55 our shepherd is with us. 00:12:40.58\00:12:43.44 The religious liberty endeavor I think is a grand one. 00:12:43.47\00:12:46.83 That we are representing God to countries, 00:12:46.86\00:12:50.78 to political apparatus and to other religions. 00:12:50.81\00:12:55.82 It's our privilege, it's our duty to share 00:12:55.85\00:12:59.16 and break bread together. 00:12:59.19\00:13:01.01 And most importantly, to share the love 00:13:01.04\00:13:03.48 and the freedom that God gives to us. 00:13:03.51\00:13:05.39 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:13:07.60\00:13:10.78
