Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:22.79\00:00:24.32 This is the program bringing you up-to-date news, 00:00:24.35\00:00:26.78 views, discussion and interesting guests 00:00:26.81\00:00:30.77 speaking on Religious Liberty in the United States 00:00:30.80\00:00:34.45 and around the world. 00:00:34.48\00:00:35.85 My name is Lincoln Steed, 00:00:35.88\00:00:37.25 editor of Liberty magazine and my guest 00:00:37.28\00:00:39.57 on this program Mr. Dr. John Graz, 00:00:39.60\00:00:41.43 world leader for Religious Liberty 00:00:41.46\00:00:44.67 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:00:44.70\00:00:46.13 I'm very happy to be with you, Lincoln 00:00:46.16\00:00:48.58 It's always a pleasure to have you on the program, 00:00:48.61\00:00:50.39 this is not the first nor have the last time. 00:00:50.42\00:00:52.51 Looking at you and thinking about what we both do 00:00:52.54\00:00:55.81 for Religious Liberty and remembering 00:00:55.84\00:00:59.15 Liberty magazine, you know, 00:00:59.18\00:01:00.60 I have to say that we follow some great leaders. 00:01:00.63\00:01:03.99 There's been people before us that-- 00:01:04.02\00:01:06.06 when I was growing up, they were just heroes to me. 00:01:06.09\00:01:09.09 On Liberty magazine, there was Roland Hegstad 00:01:09.12\00:01:12.10 and I can remember just being in rapture 00:01:12.13\00:01:14.57 listening to him talking about religious freedom 00:01:14.60\00:01:16.74 in the Soviet Union or the like of 00:01:16.77\00:01:18.75 but people standing for the faith there. 00:01:18.78\00:01:22.78 Another person that I see him now and then 00:01:22.81\00:01:25.99 but the memory of him is just overwhelming is Bert Beach. 00:01:26.02\00:01:29.68 Bert Beach. Your immediate predecessors. 00:01:29.71\00:01:31.61 Oh, yeah and we worked ten years together. Yeah. 00:01:31.64\00:01:34.26 Even if he was not working fulltime, you know, 00:01:34.29\00:01:37.33 that was a privilege for me to work with him as advisor 00:01:37.36\00:01:41.47 and for religious freedom and inter church relations 00:01:41.50\00:01:44.77 and it's also a great pleasure because you know 00:01:44.80\00:01:47.44 being with Bert it's always an event, 00:01:47.47\00:01:50.75 you know, Bert is such a presence-- 00:01:50.78\00:01:52.93 Great personality. Has just so presence that when his-- 00:01:52.96\00:01:54.72 you know something happens when he leaves, 00:01:54.75\00:01:57.19 you know, things are becoming normal. 00:01:57.22\00:01:59.63 But, you know, we know him personally, 00:01:59.66\00:02:03.20 and I of course knew Roland Hegstad, 00:02:03.23\00:02:05.90 he has been retired a long time, not a presence anymore. 00:02:05.93\00:02:10.52 But more than just the immediate human being 00:02:10.55\00:02:13.61 we know they've done a great work. 00:02:13.64\00:02:15.51 These are icons in my view of religious freedom. 00:02:15.54\00:02:18.17 I was happy the other day to get an advance copy of a book, 00:02:18.20\00:02:22.17 a biography that Bert Beach, has written, 00:02:22.20\00:02:24.64 laying out some of the great experiences of his life. Yeah. 00:02:24.67\00:02:29.06 And I could recommend that some of our viewers 00:02:29.09\00:02:31.17 that have access to books published by the Review 00:02:31.20\00:02:34.09 and Herald Publishing Association. 00:02:34.12\00:02:35.65 They should get this book. It's just recently released. 00:02:35.68\00:02:38.09 It'll be at Adventist camp meetings in the next few months 00:02:38.12\00:02:41.06 and then after that in Adventist book stores. 00:02:41.09\00:02:43.97 And I had the privilege to write the forewords. 00:02:44.00\00:02:47.22 Did you? I didn't notice that. Yeah, it was great privilege. 00:02:47.25\00:02:50.43 But what's one of the more memorable things 00:02:53.25\00:02:55.19 that you remember in this crossover period 00:02:55.22\00:02:57.68 when you're working with Bert? 00:02:57.71\00:02:59.34 You know many things, you know, 00:02:59.37\00:03:02.08 first you know it has always been a pleasure 00:03:02.11\00:03:05.39 to work with Bert, to travel with him 00:03:05.42\00:03:07.98 because he has such a presence 00:03:08.01\00:03:10.40 that he makes things you know different. 00:03:10.43\00:03:13.11 When he attends a meeting you know 00:03:13.14\00:03:15.02 things are becoming different. 00:03:15.05\00:03:16.42 You can see at first, you know, he speaks several languages. 00:03:16.45\00:03:19.02 It means he has never any kind of problem 00:03:19.05\00:03:21.53 to speak Italian, French, German, Swiss German, 00:03:21.56\00:03:25.33 English, and so on and so on. 00:03:25.36\00:03:27.66 It means that, hey man, there is someone, 00:03:27.69\00:03:29.83 who is different, a real diplomat. 00:03:29.86\00:03:32.87 Then also, you know, and mainly when we have 00:03:32.90\00:03:36.72 a meeting with other religious leaders, 00:03:36.75\00:03:38.84 you know, he introduced me to the Christian world communion. 00:03:38.87\00:03:41.95 He was the secretary of this fabulous group of leaders, 00:03:41.98\00:03:47.09 Christian leaders, which is a conference, a meeting. 00:03:47.12\00:03:50.41 And he was a secretary for thirty two years. 00:03:50.44\00:03:54.36 It means he got such authorities in this group that 00:03:54.39\00:03:58.48 they elected him elected him year after year. 00:03:58.51\00:04:01.63 And he prepared my coming and they elected me 00:04:01.66\00:04:04.96 after eight years and I have been there for ten years. 00:04:04.99\00:04:07.71 It means that I follow really his traditions there. 00:04:07.74\00:04:12.66 And everyone recognized that Bert has 00:04:12.69\00:04:16.22 a kind of inerrant authority and also very precise, 00:04:16.25\00:04:20.90 you know, when we needed to have a text, 00:04:20.93\00:04:23.53 precise text like a statement we asked Bert. 00:04:23.56\00:04:27.49 Well he understood religious liberty viscerally. 00:04:27.52\00:04:30.43 He didn't have to think about it. 00:04:30.46\00:04:32.09 He lived it. Yeah, exactly. 00:04:32.12\00:04:34.50 And you mentioned all the languages he knew. 00:04:34.53\00:04:38.25 He was a diplomat, but in some ways 00:04:38.28\00:04:40.83 he transcended the form of diplomacy because 00:04:40.86\00:04:43.34 he had become personal friend with so many 00:04:43.37\00:04:45.24 of these religious leaders particularly. 00:04:45.27\00:04:48.93 Yeah, year after year there is a special meeting 00:04:48.96\00:04:52.10 when you have I talked about the meeting 00:04:52.13\00:04:54.19 of the concerts of the Christian world communion. 00:04:54.22\00:04:56.38 You meet them after 15 years or 10 years. 00:04:56.41\00:04:59.57 Of course at the end you're older than them. 00:04:59.60\00:05:02.37 You know the story of the group better than them. 00:05:02.40\00:05:05.47 And of course you become a good friend of every one. 00:05:05.50\00:05:08.38 This is the way we work, you know. 00:05:08.41\00:05:11.82 Every time you become friend with someone 00:05:11.85\00:05:14.55 you have new doors open and which was very interesting 00:05:14.58\00:05:19.42 with Bert is, you know he had the gift 00:05:19.45\00:05:22.80 of being really a strong Adventist. 00:05:22.83\00:05:26.20 When some people say that Bert Beach he has done that, 00:05:26.23\00:05:30.16 you know, I can really be the witness of a man 00:05:30.19\00:05:36.41 who has never been, you know, 00:05:36.44\00:05:39.55 never feel any shame to be an Adventist. 00:05:39.58\00:05:42.89 He defended the Adventist Church. 00:05:42.92\00:05:45.21 Just representing the Adventist Church. 00:05:45.24\00:05:46.61 He represented very well. 00:05:46.64\00:05:48.01 You know, nobody who met him 00:05:48.04\00:05:50.55 could say that who is this guy? 00:05:50.58\00:05:52.74 Is he an Adventist or not? 00:05:52.77\00:05:55.44 They knew that Bert Beach is here. 00:05:55.47\00:05:57.64 You know, he will defend his church 00:05:57.67\00:05:59.74 if his church is attacked. 00:05:59.77\00:06:01.14 He will explain things and he will have always 00:06:01.17\00:06:03.96 a word of humor, you know, 00:06:03.99\00:06:06.55 he had a lot of humor and people laughed, 00:06:06.58\00:06:08.22 but through that he is really a strong person. 00:06:08.25\00:06:11.92 When you're leading to something many more than Adventists 00:06:11.95\00:06:13.78 watch this program, but I know a lot of long time 00:06:13.81\00:06:17.03 Adventists watched this program and some of them 00:06:17.06\00:06:19.16 may have expressed these comments well you know 00:06:19.19\00:06:22.80 that Bert Beach or may be you or others of us, 00:06:22.83\00:06:25.85 you know, they giving out-- they compromising our views 00:06:25.88\00:06:28.47 meeting with these other religious leaders and so on. 00:06:28.50\00:06:31.00 I think such people miss the whole point 00:06:31.03\00:06:33.40 of what Bert and now what you're doing. 00:06:33.43\00:06:35.47 But this is--it's given that we're Seventh-day Adventists. 00:06:35.50\00:06:39.81 It's given that religious freedom means that 00:06:39.84\00:06:42.62 we got to promote our views and that 00:06:42.65\00:06:44.68 we are not giving into some one else. 00:06:44.71\00:06:46.08 But we need to have this dialogue of this 00:06:46.11\00:06:48.46 cooperative spirit to enhance the shared 00:06:48.49\00:06:51.70 commitment to religious liberty. 00:06:51.73\00:06:53.40 We have always to ask what is the purpose of this meeting? 00:06:53.43\00:06:56.08 What is the purpose of the meeting? 00:06:56.11\00:06:58.01 You need to meet people from different religion, 00:06:58.04\00:07:01.39 different phase, people from government and so on. 00:07:01.42\00:07:05.37 You don't make a selection. 00:07:05.40\00:07:06.96 You know, Jesus met people from different phase, 00:07:06.99\00:07:09.63 different opinion and so on. 00:07:09.66\00:07:11.71 You have to meet them to establish your contact 00:07:11.74\00:07:14.33 and to explain to them 00:07:14.36\00:07:16.21 why you're defending religious freedom? 00:07:16.24\00:07:18.86 Why you believe that religious freedom is important? 00:07:18.89\00:07:21.82 You know, you cannot just attack them, 00:07:21.85\00:07:23.72 that's not the good way. 00:07:23.75\00:07:25.12 And sometime people will say to Bert, 00:07:25.15\00:07:26.88 you know, I saw you. 00:07:26.91\00:07:28.28 You were shaking the hand of an archbishop 00:07:28.31\00:07:31.19 or protestant leaders and he said, but you know in-- 00:07:31.22\00:07:35.59 in a civilized way this is the way we say good morning 00:07:35.62\00:07:42.42 to someone when we have a meeting. 00:07:42.45\00:07:44.84 It means we have to make a difference between 00:07:44.87\00:07:47.60 a kind of negotiation and, you know, 00:07:47.63\00:07:50.84 we have no right to negotiate anything 00:07:50.87\00:07:52.99 and adjust relations with people. 00:07:53.02\00:07:55.63 And if you're a Christian you try to have 00:07:55.66\00:07:57.79 good relations with people. 00:07:57.82\00:07:59.36 But you keep, you know, you keep what you believe. 00:07:59.39\00:08:02.41 You know our president Ted Wilson said to me 00:08:02.44\00:08:05.63 several times, you know, make friends... 00:08:05.66\00:08:07.73 make friends without compromising your faith, 00:08:07.76\00:08:12.53 but make friends, it's so important. 00:08:12.56\00:08:14.13 We saw Apostle Paul, you know, 00:08:14.16\00:08:16.25 and especially in Ephesus when he had 00:08:16.28\00:08:18.61 these revolution against him. 00:08:18.64\00:08:20.51 You know, he was won by official friends 00:08:20.54\00:08:25.26 by some friends who were working at the government level, 00:08:25.29\00:08:30.36 but he had to make friends too. 00:08:30.39\00:08:32.12 Yeah. I mean-- You know, and I think Bert 00:08:32.15\00:08:35.41 was very effective in doing that. 00:08:35.44\00:08:37.91 And I know that some of his contacts even contingent. 00:08:37.94\00:08:40.47 And I can--I can remember, you know, 00:08:40.50\00:08:43.04 we visited the former President of 00:08:43.07\00:08:46.65 the United Nation Human Rights Committee. 00:08:46.68\00:08:49.93 He became a good friend of us, very good friend of us, 00:08:49.96\00:08:53.39 and I met him in November in Geneva last year. 00:08:53.42\00:08:57.85 And I remember, he asked me what about Bert? 00:08:57.88\00:09:01.20 What Bert is doing? 00:09:01.23\00:09:02.60 And, you know, his eyes just were like that. 00:09:02.63\00:09:04.67 What about Bert? What he is doing? 00:09:04.70\00:09:06.63 Because they remember Bert Beach as a very interesting person, 00:09:06.66\00:09:11.87 you know, someone who was very free to explain 00:09:11.90\00:09:15.37 what he believed and also time to time to have a joke. 00:09:15.40\00:09:18.85 They loved very much him. 00:09:18.88\00:09:21.50 Well, number of times Bert's come to my office. 00:09:21.53\00:09:23.54 He has mentioned that he just got a letter from one of the-- 00:09:23.57\00:09:26.11 I won't name the individual but their office, 00:09:26.14\00:09:29.40 one of the previous arch bishops of Canterbury. 00:09:29.43\00:09:31.78 Yeah, yeah. Nothing official just...keeping in contact. 00:09:31.81\00:09:36.42 I should say, you know, we met with Bert. 00:09:36.45\00:09:38.61 We met a lot of these people including 00:09:38.64\00:09:40.89 the archbishop of Canterbury. 00:09:40.92\00:09:42.38 He knew him and but, you know, all these people 00:09:42.41\00:09:45.87 who met Bert remember him. 00:09:45.90\00:09:47.75 That's interesting because when you met them 00:09:47.78\00:09:49.85 after you know, very often they say, 00:09:49.88\00:09:51.58 hey what about the-- what about-- 00:09:51.61\00:09:53.78 I said Bert Beach? Yeah, what about Bert Beach? 00:09:53.81\00:09:57.29 He was not everywhere. 00:09:57.32\00:09:58.69 And that is where a fellow Seventh-day Adventist 00:09:58.72\00:10:03.18 I think can be proud that they are representatives 00:10:03.21\00:10:06.08 of their Church who are making these contacts 00:10:06.11\00:10:08.59 at all levels of government and all levels 00:10:08.62\00:10:10.95 of religious administration around the world, 00:10:10.98\00:10:14.61 not giving away anything. 00:10:14.64\00:10:16.82 In fact promoting like Paul. You mentioned Paul. 00:10:16.85\00:10:19.47 I think that was a special role that Paul had 00:10:19.50\00:10:22.38 in contacting government leaders and some other church, 00:10:22.41\00:10:25.44 that was a different dynamic back then, you know, 00:10:25.47\00:10:28.01 he was being handed by the Judias, 00:10:28.04\00:10:32.56 but I think Paul was open enough to deal with other factions. 00:10:32.59\00:10:36.89 And you know, before Bert Beach and Bert Beach 00:10:36.92\00:10:39.38 also was very influenced by someone who was called, 00:10:39.41\00:10:44.87 his name was Dr. Nussbaum in Europe 00:10:44.90\00:10:48.22 and he was probably the prince of diplomats. 00:10:48.25\00:10:50.98 And he used to visit head of state, you know, 00:10:51.01\00:10:54.37 he talked at the United Nation about the calendar issues. 00:10:54.40\00:10:59.11 He talked with many presidents. 00:10:59.14\00:11:01.91 He was invited-- he was a friend 00:11:01.94\00:11:03.41 of Eleanor Roosevelt and so on. 00:11:03.44\00:11:05.98 And he has influenced lot of people after him. 00:11:06.01\00:11:10.45 And Bert work started to work with him 00:11:10.48\00:11:13.27 and he had good memories. 00:11:13.30\00:11:14.75 And it means as you talk, you know, there are a list of people 00:11:14.78\00:11:17.81 who influenced each other and we can continue 00:11:17.84\00:11:21.09 the work God has given to us. 00:11:21.12\00:11:23.33 Well, Isaac Newton said that "we stand on the shoulders 00:11:23.36\00:11:26.13 of those who came before us." 00:11:26.16\00:11:27.73 Well, the figure is a little hard to comprehend. 00:11:27.76\00:11:30.80 And Bert has also, you know, 00:11:30.83\00:11:32.34 we have spent so many time together 00:11:32.37\00:11:34.99 and I remember when he was 70, his wife said, 00:11:35.02\00:11:39.45 Bert you know you used to say that when you are 70, 00:11:39.48\00:11:45.40 you will be totally retired because I need you 00:11:45.43\00:11:47.83 to stay here at home also, have some rest 00:11:47.86\00:11:50.92 and you said that because you know 00:11:50.95\00:11:52.90 the bishops are retired at 70. 00:11:52.93\00:11:56.30 And when he was 75, his wife said, 00:11:56.33\00:11:58.95 Elaine said to him, Bert, now you're 75. 00:11:58.98\00:12:01.82 You have to stop and stay home. 00:12:01.85\00:12:03.71 And you said that the bishop was retired at 70. 00:12:03.74\00:12:07.30 He say, yes, but the cardinal are retired at 75. 00:12:07.33\00:12:11.87 That was Bert, you know. 00:12:11.90\00:12:13.27 And then wasn't it played as Republic, 00:12:13.30\00:12:16.41 the rule of finished at 80, rule from 40 to 80. 00:12:16.44\00:12:20.37 And he still invited, I should say, 00:12:20.40\00:12:22.16 and there's always an event 00:12:22.19\00:12:23.56 when you can have Bert Beach in a meeting. 00:12:23.59\00:12:25.56 What did he say about Moses when he was 120 years, 00:12:25.59\00:12:30.43 his vision wasn't diminished? 00:12:30.46\00:12:31.83 So I think in a good course 00:12:33.35\00:12:34.95 people's energy can stay with them. 00:12:34.98\00:12:37.27 But I just wanted to take that little time to remember 00:12:37.30\00:12:40.66 Bert Beach and what he had done for religious liberty. 00:12:40.69\00:12:43.27 He is still alive very much alive, 00:12:43.30\00:12:44.68 but you know the torch has passed to you. 00:12:44.71\00:12:46.48 And I want our viewers to know that there are powerful leaders 00:12:46.51\00:12:50.91 that are doing great things for religious liberty 00:12:50.94\00:12:53.31 in our church and of course in many other forums. 00:12:53.34\00:12:56.89 We will be right back after a break 00:12:56.92\00:12:58.37 to continue our discussion. 00:12:58.40\00:12:59.77
