Welcome back. 00:00:06.25\00:00:07.62 Before the break, I was talking with guest Dr John Graz 00:00:07.65\00:00:11.49 about the festivals of religious freedom 00:00:11.52\00:00:14.34 that have been conducted all over the world. Yeah. 00:00:14.37\00:00:16.66 And you were going to give us really 00:00:16.69\00:00:18.46 a summary of the rational behind this. 00:00:18.50\00:00:21.28 You know, the purpose of the festival is to have 00:00:21.35\00:00:24.15 as many as people we can together 00:00:24.18\00:00:28.77 in a stadium or public square and so on. 00:00:28.80\00:00:31.81 A big mass of people to send a message 00:00:32.04\00:00:34.83 which is thank you God for religious freedom. 00:00:35.14\00:00:38.38 It means we love religious freedom. 00:00:38.77\00:00:40.54 And thank you the government 00:00:40.79\00:00:42.16 which protect our religious freedom. 00:00:42.19\00:00:44.59 It means there are two aspects. 00:00:44.94\00:00:46.51 One toward God, we glorify God. 00:00:46.54\00:00:49.31 We say that religious freedom is a gift from God. 00:00:49.53\00:00:53.48 And the other side is we recognize 00:00:53.51\00:00:55.78 the importance of the government 00:00:55.81\00:00:57.78 And we are really grateful about the government 00:00:57.97\00:01:02.00 which protects religious freedom. 00:01:02.04\00:01:03.55 It's very against dynamic I think. 00:01:03.58\00:01:05.58 It means it's a good dynamic, very simple 00:01:05.61\00:01:07.50 and you can invite people from different religions. 00:01:07.80\00:01:10.45 It means they are very happy to be here 00:01:10.67\00:01:12.96 and also to say we support religious freedom, 00:01:12.99\00:01:15.32 it means you give them great opportunity. 00:01:15.52\00:01:18.90 And of course people are very happy to speak 00:01:18.93\00:01:21.83 on before you know, 20,000, 30,000, 40,000. 00:01:21.86\00:01:26.60 What's the largest number you've any of these-- 00:01:26.63\00:01:28.49 Forty five thousand twice, you know, 00:01:28.52\00:01:30.54 in the Luanda, Angola and in Lima, 00:01:30.57\00:01:32.88 Peru for the first world festival of religious freedom. 00:01:32.91\00:01:35.81 That's a lot of people. 00:01:35.84\00:01:37.21 And in this case, you know, 00:01:37.24\00:01:38.61 we had no problem to have minister of government 00:01:38.64\00:01:40.01 probably one day we can have the head of state, 00:01:40.19\00:01:42.80 because they are very surprised. 00:01:42.83\00:01:45.00 And now the problem you have is to make sure that people 00:01:45.03\00:01:48.79 will not speak to 30 minutes or we're not confused, 00:01:48.82\00:01:51.97 you know, the meeting we finally elect the world meeting 00:01:52.00\00:01:54.41 but that's something you have to make sure. 00:01:54.44\00:01:57.16 But the program has to be very attractive. 00:01:57.19\00:01:59.51 It means the best meeting we had, you know, 00:01:59.54\00:02:02.07 we had a very big orchestra, 00:02:02.10\00:02:04.35 choir of children and so on 00:02:05.61\00:02:07.59 which gives really a strong message about 00:02:07.75\00:02:10.94 we love religious freedom. We want to keep it. 00:02:10.97\00:02:12.85 It's very reinforcing, isn't it? It's positive reinforcement. 00:02:12.88\00:02:15.33 Yeah and you'll show what does it mean 00:02:15.36\00:02:16.73 to have religious freedom, you know, 00:02:16.76\00:02:18.13 because if we--you did not have religious freedom. 00:02:18.16\00:02:20.09 Couldn't do it. You will not have 00:02:20.12\00:02:22.02 all these choir, all these-- 00:02:22.05\00:02:24.93 what people are doing in this society 00:02:24.96\00:02:26.84 to have this society and so on. 00:02:26.87\00:02:28.54 It shows that hey, look we are doing that in the society. 00:02:28.57\00:02:32.58 We are useful for you, why? 00:02:32.61\00:02:35.29 Because we have religious freedom, and we want to keep it. 00:02:35.32\00:02:38.13 This is why, you know, one of my dream 00:02:38.16\00:02:40.93 will be to have not just only 50 or 40,000 people, 00:02:40.96\00:02:45.91 but 100,000 people one day. And I hope that it will come. 00:02:45.94\00:02:52.01 You know, you have almost every week in the stadiums, 00:02:52.04\00:02:56.33 many stadiums are full. 00:02:56.36\00:02:57.90 Football stadium, yeah, they're about the same number. 00:02:57.93\00:02:59.30 Almost every week around the world 00:02:59.33\00:03:00.90 to just to look at the people playing 00:03:00.93\00:03:03.04 football or soccer or baseball and so on. 00:03:03.07\00:03:06.39 I think when there is something 00:03:06.42\00:03:07.92 so much important like religious freedom. 00:03:07.95\00:03:10.82 We should really put people together. 00:03:10.85\00:03:13.58 we should really have such a big crowd and to say, 00:03:13.61\00:03:18.04 "Yes, we love religious freedom." 00:03:18.07\00:03:20.09 And you've had them all over the world now, 00:03:20.12\00:03:23.33 but not yet a major one in the United States. 00:03:23.36\00:03:26.75 And so that's the next challenge, isn't it? We need to-- 00:03:26.78\00:03:29.04 Still one of our dream, but I have to say that, 00:03:29.07\00:03:31.93 you know, we have to recognize that 00:03:31.96\00:03:33.73 in many places in the world, they are very well-organized. 00:03:33.76\00:03:37.99 They know how to held big meeting like, you know, 00:03:38.02\00:03:41.00 in Peru, you were not first, 500 buses came, 00:03:41.03\00:03:45.43 you know, they filled the stadium. 00:03:45.46\00:03:47.95 I went to one event in Peru years ago. 00:03:47.98\00:03:50.44 Yeah, years ago. And there were about 00:03:50.47\00:03:52.53 4 or 5,000 people at that meeting. 00:03:52.56\00:03:54.43 Yeah, yeah, but you know, when you see the stadium-- 00:03:54.46\00:03:56.53 when I saw the stadium empty, 00:03:56.56\00:03:59.54 the first time I reorganize a mass meeting. 00:03:59.57\00:04:02.13 I'd say my Lord, you know, that--you know, 00:04:02.16\00:04:05.03 I want to be full of praise, but that would be impossible, 00:04:05.24\00:04:08.90 but anyway if we have half, we will be happy. 00:04:08.93\00:04:11.55 And you know, there is a promise that 00:04:11.99\00:04:13.54 I will never forget. When we start with this festival, 00:04:13.57\00:04:16.84 I read the Bible in Deuteronomy 00:04:16.87\00:04:19.32 Chapter 28, you know, and God said, 00:04:19.67\00:04:22.67 "I will make you the head and not the tail 00:04:22.80\00:04:24.83 if you'll obey my commandments. " It say, 00:04:25.05\00:04:28.43 "We try to obey you commandments." 00:04:28.46\00:04:30.30 Now there is a blessing. I have no right 00:04:30.38\00:04:33.24 to see little things when the promise of God is big thing. 00:04:33.86\00:04:38.67 You know, we are the one who reduce thing. 00:04:39.11\00:04:41.89 The promise of God is fabulous. The blessings are fabulous, 00:04:41.92\00:04:45.17 but we think small. We want to stay small and I'll say, 00:04:45.20\00:04:49.00 you know, religious freedom is a huge--it's a big value. 00:04:49.30\00:04:53.17 It's so important. We have no right to think small. 00:04:53.24\00:04:57.08 We have no right to be happy with a meeting with 25 people, 00:04:57.54\00:05:00.95 with 30 people. 00:05:00.98\00:05:02.99 We need to see bigger because this is-- 00:05:03.02\00:05:05.66 This is a huge event. You know, 00:05:05.69\00:05:07.29 this is a religious liberty program, 00:05:07.32\00:05:08.99 but you know, just you've given me the chance again. 00:05:09.02\00:05:11.64 It's central to Seventh-day Adventist 00:05:11.93\00:05:14.07 and a Christian viewpoint of serving God. 00:05:14.10\00:05:16.79 Will liberate it from sin and now we're sharing 00:05:17.09\00:05:20.14 that liberation to the wider audience. 00:05:20.17\00:05:22.07 And in the civil world as Hillary Clinton said at 00:05:23.25\00:05:26.96 our Liberty dinner some years ago. 00:05:27.03\00:05:28.67 You can tell in a country, the state of 00:05:29.06\00:05:31.62 their civil libertiesby their religious freedom. You're right. 00:05:31.65\00:05:34.27 So it's integrally tied up to just human freedom 00:05:34.59\00:05:37.14 around the world. Exactly and this is 00:05:37.17\00:05:39.15 why you attract-- We shouldn't be embarrassed 00:05:39.18\00:05:40.55 about promoting religious freedom. No. 00:05:40.58\00:05:41.95 It's central. It's one of the best way 00:05:41.98\00:05:43.74 to deal with the governments, 00:05:43.77\00:05:45.72 with officials, and human right. 00:05:45.79\00:05:48.07 You show that you are interested by something 00:05:48.10\00:05:50.73 which is essential not just for us, but for all. 00:05:50.80\00:05:53.98 And you see the blessing of God. 00:05:54.13\00:05:55.54 And I think we'll see miracle because you know, 00:05:55.77\00:05:58.15 for us this kind of meeting should be also 00:05:58.18\00:06:01.55 glorification of God, you know, 00:06:02.49\00:06:04.15 because it comes from God. 00:06:04.34\00:06:05.96 We don't say that religious freedom just come from men. 00:06:06.11\00:06:08.84 Men's did a lot of thing for our religious freedom, 00:06:09.31\00:06:11.79 and we have to be grateful to them. 00:06:12.04\00:06:13.79 This is why in our congress and in our festival, 00:06:14.03\00:06:17.63 we also thanks people who'd give their life for our freedom. 00:06:17.89\00:06:22.15 And we have to thank to the country 00:06:22.36\00:06:24.13 which protect our freedom. 00:06:24.45\00:06:25.82 Imagine that you say that we want to thank God 00:06:25.85\00:06:28.03 and we want to thank the country. 00:06:28.07\00:06:29.62 We want to thank all those who died for our freedom, 00:06:29.80\00:06:32.97 and you have just 25 people. What would be the message? 00:06:33.19\00:06:36.08 The message will be that religious freedom 00:06:36.92\00:06:38.93 is not important. And people who die for them, 00:06:38.96\00:06:41.82 you know, people will say they die for nothing. 00:06:41.85\00:06:43.77 Look, they are even not happy to be together. 00:06:43.82\00:06:46.25 This is why we have to transform in the mass meeting. 00:06:46.73\00:06:51.52 We need to have time to time mass meeting. 00:06:51.59\00:06:53.99 And I have to say that, you know, 00:06:54.37\00:06:55.85 when I was in the Philippines, 00:06:55.88\00:06:57.43 I had the visit of the Union President, 00:06:58.10\00:07:00.12 the leader of the church for region. 00:07:00.15\00:07:02.36 And he said, "We are interested about festival." 00:07:02.86\00:07:05.42 And my colleague there said 00:07:05.97\00:07:07.34 "In 2014, we'll have three important festivals." 00:07:07.44\00:07:11.54 Then in Africa, Lusaka, they say, 00:07:11.57\00:07:13.72 "We want to have the big one." Then in Cameroon, 00:07:13.75\00:07:15.94 they want to have their big festival. 00:07:16.03\00:07:17.47 And next year our congress plus the festival. 00:07:17.77\00:07:20.12 Then in South America, next year 2013, 00:07:20.68\00:07:23.81 we will have the second world festival 00:07:24.38\00:07:26.32 of religious freedom in Sao Paulo. 00:07:26.35\00:07:28.56 And go on and go on, we have more and more 00:07:28.99\00:07:31.26 people Mexico, Chiapas-- Yeah, the Chiapas one I thought. 00:07:31.33\00:07:34.24 Chiapas where people were persecuted during 30 years. 00:07:34.27\00:07:37.90 Now they have freedom and they want to say, 00:07:38.21\00:07:40.64 "Thank you God for the freedom we have for religious freedom." 00:07:40.71\00:07:43.70 And of course if you say we are creating evenement to evenements 00:07:43.97\00:07:47.29 to say thank you God and you have just 50 people 00:07:47.91\00:07:50.95 that means that you don't believe, he go what does. 00:07:51.33\00:07:53.73 This is wonderful. You know, I am hesitating to say this, 00:07:54.92\00:08:00.04 but I think in your position, you're going to be remembered 00:08:00.18\00:08:03.26 as the leader in the religious liberty 00:08:03.70\00:08:06.68 that really got these festivals going. 00:08:06.71\00:08:10.04 It's been-- you know 00:08:10.43\00:08:11.80 that was I just-- Growing macro of what you are doing there. 00:08:11.83\00:08:13.86 You know, Lincoln, the first meeting 00:08:13.89\00:08:15.28 I was invited when I was nominated at the GEC, 00:08:15.42\00:08:19.71 General Conference, the first meeting as a religious leader. 00:08:20.18\00:08:23.48 The first meeting I was invited in Romania 00:08:23.97\00:08:27.50 and I used to go to Romania as a youth leader and we used to have 00:08:27.83\00:08:31.68 5,000, 6,000 people sometime 10,000 people. 00:08:31.71\00:08:35.15 And they say,"This afternoon, we will have all the church 00:08:36.00\00:08:38.64 together and we will have a meeting on religious freedom." 00:08:38.81\00:08:42.07 And I thought that, "Man, that's may be 1,000 or 2,000." 00:08:42.10\00:08:46.46 And we had 30 people. 00:08:47.65\00:08:49.63 And I said that, that was all the churches. 00:08:50.34\00:08:52.34 They say, "Yes." I say, 00:08:52.37\00:08:53.74 "But why did we have just 30 people?" They said, 00:08:53.77\00:08:57.46 "But you know, religion freedom doesn't attract 00:08:57.49\00:08:59.43 a lot of people." And I say, "We cannot be happy with that. 00:08:59.46\00:09:02.71 If we are happy with that, we miss our mission. 00:09:03.22\00:09:06.31 We have to be able to mobilize people, not everyday. 00:09:06.86\00:09:09.91 You know, this is what I said in a country. 00:09:09.98\00:09:11.64 You've to do that once a year or not once a year. 00:09:11.67\00:09:14.74 Once every five years, but a big one, 00:09:14.77\00:09:16.82 and once a year, you have an event that would be good, 00:09:17.15\00:09:20.38 but don't give up, don't say that it's impossible, 00:09:20.41\00:09:24.09 it will not work. It's just a matter of faith. 00:09:24.16\00:09:26.61 And one day what I dream 00:09:26.68\00:09:28.32 used to have all religion together. 00:09:28.35\00:09:30.68 And, you know, the festival give 00:09:31.61\00:09:33.02 a fabulous image for the Adventist church 00:09:33.09\00:09:37.06 because we organize first, you know, when we organize 00:09:37.37\00:09:40.69 a meeting with 4,000 people-- Well, we need to be the head, 00:09:40.72\00:09:42.57 not the tail. Yeah, you know, 00:09:42.60\00:09:43.97 you organize a meeting with 40,000 people. 00:09:44.00\00:09:46.43 You know what does mean? 00:09:46.46\00:09:47.85 You are able to do that. You have the capacity to organize. 00:09:48.37\00:09:51.90 You'llshow to the public you are not crazy people. 00:09:51.93\00:09:55.35 You are able to do big things. And we share things-- 00:09:55.58\00:09:57.58 And we share. And come over there. We are not 00:09:57.88\00:09:59.55 not sort of--another sort of a creature 00:09:59.58\00:10:00.97 We share this can same value. 00:10:03.05\00:10:04.92 We share the same value with others. 00:10:05.24\00:10:07.09 We invite other to be there. We are not, 00:10:07.54\00:10:09.64 you know, exclusively invite them. 00:10:09.67\00:10:12.60 You mentioned it in passing, but I want to pick up on, 00:10:12.63\00:10:15.09 you used to be a youth leader and I think it's very important 00:10:15.12\00:10:18.29 to involve the younger generation in this. 00:10:18.32\00:10:20.40 Young people have energy, they have vision 00:10:22.15\00:10:24.39 and we need to give them the idea that religious liberty 00:10:24.60\00:10:27.35 is something that concerns them. Yeah. 00:10:27.38\00:10:28.87 So it's--I think it's inspired to bring together the youths 00:10:28.91\00:10:31.90 in religious liberty the way you use them. 00:10:31.93\00:10:33.30 You're also involved in our festival. 00:10:33.33\00:10:34.70 You remember in Santo Domingo, the youths were everywhere. 00:10:34.73\00:10:37.64 Absolutely. Seventy, sixty, seventy percent 00:10:37.67\00:10:40.10 of the people are young people in our festival. 00:10:40.16\00:10:42.68 And you probably can remember the quote, 00:10:43.07\00:10:45.43 writing to Seventh-day Adventist, 00:10:45.50\00:10:46.91 years ago Ellen White, 00:10:46.94\00:10:48.31 said something about an army of our youth rightly trained 00:10:48.47\00:10:52.73 will then I forget what he said next, 00:10:53.21\00:10:55.79 but some of the effect that they will finish the work, 00:10:55.82\00:10:57.73 will change the world. Absolutely. 00:10:57.76\00:11:00.18 You know, when I read Patriarchs and Prophets, 00:11:00.21\00:11:03.27 it give a such encouragement for young people taking 00:11:03.49\00:11:06.78 the Bible example. And that's create 00:11:06.81\00:11:09.75 an event where young people can be associate, 00:11:09.78\00:11:12.30 not only but musician, expert, artist. 00:11:12.33\00:11:16.07 You know, you remember the festival in Santo Domingo 00:11:16.10\00:11:19.32 they play, you know, they divide the Bible in several section-- 00:11:19.35\00:11:23.74 There were dramatic representations-- 00:11:23.77\00:11:25.36 And they play their Bible-- The stories, 00:11:25.39\00:11:26.76 they were preaching there. 00:11:26.79\00:11:28.16 In about religious freedom, that was just fabulous. 00:11:28.19\00:11:30.21 Yeah. You know, I-- 00:11:30.24\00:11:31.61 Take the story that they told was of the children of Israel 00:11:31.64\00:11:34.69 leaving Egypt. Liberation, 00:11:34.72\00:11:36.74 that's a story of religious liberty. 00:11:36.78\00:11:38.33 It's not just a concept. It's a reality. 00:11:39.23\00:11:41.31 It's something that's happening in our life. 00:11:41.34\00:11:42.98 This is why you know, I believe that the festival-- 00:11:43.28\00:11:46.65 these opportunity which is given to have 00:11:46.72\00:11:49.87 people together as many as we can hope. 00:11:49.90\00:11:53.14 And to say strongly, we believe in religious freedom. 00:11:53.42\00:11:56.77 We love religious freedom. We want to keep it. 00:11:57.10\00:11:59.62 But more than that, we wanna imagine that a stadium with 00:11:59.76\00:12:03.85 50,000 people saying that thanks God for religious freedom 00:12:04.14\00:12:08.98 and thanks our country for protecting 00:12:09.24\00:12:11.75 our religious freedom. 00:12:11.96\00:12:13.33 A few years ago, with quite a few thousand other guests 00:12:15.50\00:12:19.89 I was in a great stadium in Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia 00:12:20.49\00:12:23.88 as they celebrated several decades of their independence. 00:12:24.37\00:12:28.91 It was a memorable occasion. Tens of thousands of people 00:12:29.45\00:12:33.27 in the audience and several thousand in the great circle 00:12:33.38\00:12:38.21 there performing and giving a display of national unity. 00:12:38.24\00:12:41.79 There were human waves that rolled across the whole expanse. 00:12:42.17\00:12:46.55 There were musical groups that filled 00:12:46.88\00:12:48.82 the stadium with their music. 00:12:49.04\00:12:50.52 It was overpowering. 00:12:50.55\00:12:52.30 That was for a national identity. 00:12:53.94\00:12:55.78 That was for a political purpose. 00:12:55.85\00:12:57.45 But to do something similar for religious freedom, 00:12:57.97\00:13:00.95 to have a festival of praise, 00:13:00.98\00:13:02.51 where 50, 60, 70,000 even people gather together to praise God 00:13:02.92\00:13:08.58 and to praise their society for the ability to live in freedom. 00:13:09.00\00:13:13.29 To practice their faith publicly is the stupendous event 00:13:13.32\00:13:17.17 That's what's being done more and more around the world 00:13:17.43\00:13:20.05 In the plan that our religious liberty department 00:13:21.44\00:13:24.38 has implemented to raise an awareness for religious freedom. 00:13:24.41\00:13:28.08 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:13:31.45\00:13:34.64
