Welcome back to the Liberty Insider 00:00:06.41\00:00:08.25 before the break with guest, Dr. John Graz. 00:00:08.26\00:00:10.85 I was talking about the Seventh International 00:00:10.86\00:00:13.71 Religious Liberty Conference of Congress 00:00:13.72\00:00:15.79 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, 00:00:15.80\00:00:18.80 fantastic event 900 participants. 00:00:18.81\00:00:23.13 Participants. Yeah. 00:00:23.14\00:00:24.50 I was trying to think how to characterize them 00:00:24.51\00:00:26.00 because they were government leaders, 00:00:26.01\00:00:28.39 they were church leaders, they were-- 00:00:28.40\00:00:31.52 N.G.O.'s, experts. N.G.O.'s. 00:00:31.53\00:00:33.33 University Professors. Procumbent of activists 00:00:33.34\00:00:36.88 and people that are involved in religious liberty. 00:00:36.89\00:00:39.62 Some people might ask not just why we, 00:00:39.63\00:00:43.44 we were on beach there. 00:00:43.45\00:00:45.18 Yeah, yeah. Beautiful environment but-- 00:00:45.19\00:00:46.91 You know, I want to answer 00:00:46.92\00:00:48.27 the question about the beach. 00:00:48.28\00:00:49.67 You know, when you organize a congress 00:00:49.68\00:00:52.10 you have to find a place where you can 00:00:52.11\00:00:54.13 have minimum cost of transportation] 00:00:54.14\00:00:57.74 it means if you can find a place where the hotels 00:00:57.75\00:01:00.02 are very closed to the center, to the conference center, 00:01:00.03\00:01:04.11 that's a very good. 00:01:04.12\00:01:05.49 And you don't find easily that. 00:01:05.50\00:01:07.38 If you go to the-- we went to capital city 00:01:07.39\00:01:10.27 and you know people who'd have to walk or take the bus, 00:01:10.28\00:01:13.90 the metro to go the meeting, 00:01:13.91\00:01:16.12 but they are we had everything on the same place. 00:01:16.13\00:01:18.55 And beautiful convention center. Everything. 00:01:18.56\00:01:20.34 And beautiful convention center. 00:01:20.35\00:01:21.75 And to hold out all of these people you don't... 00:01:21.76\00:01:23.26 And the price was fabulous too, 00:01:23.27\00:01:24.92 it means you know, when you have 00:01:24.93\00:01:25.95 all these factors together you don't hesitate. 00:01:25.96\00:01:29.02 Yeah, no, no, it was perfect. 00:01:29.03\00:01:31.67 But lets talk about not just why on the beach, 00:01:31.68\00:01:34.46 and why such a nice environment. 00:01:34.47\00:01:36.08 Some people might ask even why such a conference? 00:01:36.09\00:01:39.78 Yeah, that's good a question. 00:01:39.79\00:01:41.21 I know one person made a comment that I thought 00:01:41.22\00:01:43.83 was interesting they said, you know, 00:01:43.84\00:01:44.99 what is it really accomplished. 00:01:45.00\00:01:46.00 There is no one really going out doing something 00:01:46.01\00:01:49.59 at a local level as result and I think 00:01:49.60\00:01:51.47 that misses the point of a global conference. 00:01:51.48\00:01:54.12 Absolutely, you know-- you know every time 00:01:54.13\00:01:56.58 we can see that, every time we have a congress, 00:01:56.59\00:01:58.91 we have an increasing of activities about 00:01:58.92\00:02:02.21 religious freedom after the Congress. 00:02:02.22\00:02:04.99 It means even if you don't have a decision 00:02:05.00\00:02:08.76 we had a decision during the festival of 00:02:08.77\00:02:10.92 religious freedom which was just after the Congress 00:02:10.93\00:02:14.39 where everyone present about 2000 people you know take, 00:02:14.40\00:02:18.63 took a commitment to be an ambassador of religious freedom. 00:02:18.64\00:02:23.08 It means you prepare really the ground 00:02:23.09\00:02:25.29 and many-many people you know after came to me 00:02:25.30\00:02:27.54 and they say can you visit us because 00:02:27.55\00:02:29.47 we want to have a regional congress. 00:02:29.48\00:02:31.32 We want to have a local congress they show 00:02:31.33\00:02:35.09 something they can duplicate to organize. 00:02:35.10\00:02:38.12 It's a catalyst, an international catalyst 00:02:38.13\00:02:40.18 that works its way up in a local region may be 00:02:40.19\00:02:44.42 through localized training session where people 00:02:44.43\00:02:48.01 then go out and contact legislators 00:02:48.02\00:02:49.85 or local community in different ways. 00:02:49.86\00:02:52.45 We can't expect a global event to do that, 00:02:52.46\00:02:55.12 but it has an incredible potential to catalyze and-- 00:02:55.13\00:02:58.57 Absolutely, we had more than the seven, yeah, 00:02:58.58\00:03:01.90 we have seven division or regional president. 00:03:01.91\00:03:06.16 They have to set-- Set a first time seven. 00:03:06.17\00:03:08.07 And the Adventist several leader, 00:03:08.08\00:03:09.68 we are all though we had also all the leader you know 00:03:09.69\00:03:12.45 when they came back to the, you know, what most of them 00:03:12.46\00:03:15.08 you know came to me know and say we want to do 00:03:15.09\00:03:17.14 something like that you know, you know region, 00:03:17.15\00:03:20.15 we want to have exposure, we want because they saw 00:03:20.16\00:03:23.16 that might its an event where you can put together 00:03:23.17\00:03:26.99 religious people and people from government 00:03:27.00\00:03:30.03 and they can talk. 00:03:30.04\00:03:31.07 Or you can put together people from the government 00:03:31.08\00:03:33.65 and university teacher or professor and they can talk 00:03:33.66\00:03:38.06 about what about what, about religious freedom 00:03:38.07\00:03:40.22 which is a very important opportunity. 00:03:40.23\00:03:43.00 The congress create an opportunity, you know, 00:03:43.01\00:03:45.64 to increase the work about religious freedom 00:03:45.65\00:03:49.69 and of course to promote the concept 00:03:49.70\00:03:51.85 at the level of government. 00:03:51.86\00:03:53.78 When government officials come they see 00:03:53.79\00:03:57.42 they are welcome and they have to explain 00:03:57.43\00:04:00.23 what they are doing in their country 00:04:00.24\00:04:02.31 and they are listening to the other people. 00:04:02.32\00:04:05.07 And they are listening religious leader talking about 00:04:05.08\00:04:07.40 the problem of religious freedom. 00:04:07.41\00:04:08.54 So self reinforcing, isn't it? 00:04:08.55\00:04:09.87 You know it gives something-- something new for them. 00:04:09.88\00:04:13.26 They don't have a lot of opportunity 00:04:13.27\00:04:16.17 to attend such a meeting. 00:04:16.18\00:04:17.70 You can read in the news how many congress 00:04:17.71\00:04:20.69 about religious freedom with these dimension 00:04:20.70\00:04:24.38 have been organized in the world in 2012. 00:04:24.39\00:04:28.28 Your right. There--there are reasonable members 00:04:28.29\00:04:30.67 of localized ones but I think internationally not many. 00:04:30.68\00:04:34.37 Even-- even between-- 00:04:34.38\00:04:35.69 Probably on--on one hand you could number them I know. 00:04:35.70\00:04:38.19 And not these dimension, you know, 00:04:38.20\00:04:40.16 I have never seen and when I ask you know, 00:04:40.17\00:04:42.59 I have friend with many religious leader. 00:04:42.60\00:04:45.01 I said, to them why you did not organize such a big event 00:04:45.02\00:04:49.29 for religious freedom because you are in favor. 00:04:49.30\00:04:51.58 Why do you-- you don't plan to have, 00:04:51.59\00:04:54.00 they smile and they say, hey, it's not so easy to do 00:04:54.01\00:04:57.02 even if they are represent million and million of people. 00:04:57.03\00:05:00.16 They have million members. 00:05:00.17\00:05:01.71 They don't do that, of course, you know, 00:05:01.72\00:05:04.06 next year the catholic church will organize big meeting. 00:05:04.07\00:05:06.74 We will see that it will be interesting in commemoration 00:05:06.75\00:05:11.24 of the "Edict of Milan" and they will have, 00:05:11.25\00:05:14.48 they plan to have five or six huge meeting. 00:05:14.49\00:05:17.21 "Edict of Milan" Yeah, Edict of Milan. 00:05:17.22\00:05:18.95 yeah, that was the first document 00:05:18.96\00:05:21.68 and the first Edict about religious freedom. 00:05:21.69\00:05:24.69 And they plan to have huge--concert, 00:05:24.70\00:05:27.64 we will talk about probably one day but you know, 00:05:27.65\00:05:31.02 they may, they have the potential to do 00:05:31.03\00:05:33.77 even with may be 100 or 200 or may be one million people 00:05:33.78\00:05:37.43 and we will be very happy. 00:05:37.44\00:05:39.05 You know, if you had one million people 00:05:39.06\00:05:42.19 saying we love religious freedom. 00:05:42.20\00:05:44.26 We want to definite to keep it, 00:05:44.27\00:05:46.28 but the congress is different than the festival. 00:05:46.29\00:05:49.42 Festival is a mass meeting the congress 00:05:49.43\00:05:51.42 is a selected group of parties. 00:05:51.43\00:05:54.20 It's a specialist, government and religious. 00:05:54.21\00:05:56.89 And we had from almost every countries of Inter 00:05:56.90\00:06:01.12 and the Central America represented by 00:06:01.13\00:06:05.22 the minister of religious affairs from the government. 00:06:05.23\00:06:09.48 Now there was putting them together. 00:06:09.49\00:06:11.56 You can imagine after you visit the countries 00:06:11.57\00:06:14.52 and you talk with the government 00:06:14.53\00:06:16.71 and they remember the congress you organize 00:06:16.72\00:06:19.75 they look at you in the different way. 00:06:19.76\00:06:21.18 This connection stay with you and this is jumping a little bit 00:06:21.19\00:06:23.65 in another program I would like to talk about 00:06:23.66\00:06:25.80 liberty dinner that we recently had, 00:06:25.81\00:06:27.57 and I noticed there for the third time, 00:06:27.58\00:06:30.80 I think it was the second time. 00:06:30.81\00:06:32.38 We had the ambassador from East Timor, you remember. 00:06:32.39\00:06:37.19 Yeah, we visited East Timor. 00:06:37.20\00:06:38.67 We visited the president and--and then leadership. 00:06:38.68\00:06:41.47 The ambassador form Libya to this time. 00:06:41.48\00:06:43.60 But--but because of that visit some years ago, 00:06:43.61\00:06:46.14 now the ambassador keeps up in contact with us. 00:06:46.15\00:06:48.82 And so I am sure with this conference 00:06:48.83\00:06:50.52 when this governmental representative are there, 00:06:50.53\00:06:52.84 now we are in they radar, they are in our circle. 00:06:52.85\00:06:55.06 And you know, already people talk about 00:06:55.07\00:06:56.51 the next congress and the next congress because 00:06:56.52\00:06:59.50 every five years we have congress, you know, 00:06:59.51\00:07:02.35 and have also to say that we have a little budget to do that, 00:07:02.36\00:07:05.64 its not you know million coming from gift and so no, no, 00:07:05.65\00:07:10.09 we do that with a very small amount of money. 00:07:10.10\00:07:16.19 We try to do our best fortunately 00:07:16.20\00:07:18.24 the general conference help us and sometime we have 00:07:18.25\00:07:21.23 some help but not a lot-- not a lot. 00:07:21.24\00:07:23.79 It means already having such a big event. 00:07:23.80\00:07:26.45 It's already in itself a miracle. 00:07:26.46\00:07:29.29 Well, money is necessary, but I think 00:07:29.30\00:07:30.98 what really makes it happen, motivated activsts 00:07:30.99\00:07:34.41 at all levels and we need to work with this network. 00:07:34.42\00:07:37.20 And, you know, now we talk about 00:07:37.21\00:07:38.82 the Adventist church is involved. 00:07:38.83\00:07:41.98 They are supporting with, you know, 00:07:41.99\00:07:43.90 the association and some other, 00:07:43.91\00:07:45.73 you know it give another image about the Adventist church. 00:07:45.74\00:07:51.12 You know people use to see the Adventist church 00:07:51.13\00:07:53.40 as a proselytizing specially in Latin America doing that also, 00:07:53.41\00:07:58.28 of course, building school and building hospital, 00:07:58.29\00:08:00.95 but they don't really expect the Adventist church 00:08:00.96\00:08:04.49 on the field of human rights and religious freedom. 00:08:04.50\00:08:08.18 They believe that we are weak on that and suddenly 00:08:08.19\00:08:10.67 they discover that we are able as a church as, you know, 00:08:10.68\00:08:14.78 someone say that we are small church 00:08:14.79\00:08:16.83 and some we are able to become to be the champion 00:08:16.84\00:08:21.29 on defending values a Christian values 00:08:21.30\00:08:23.95 but the human right values for all not just for us for all. 00:08:23.96\00:08:29.55 And you can be sure that it makes a difference 00:08:29.56\00:08:32.85 and I remember one of my good friend 00:08:32.86\00:08:35.21 who was a leader in France and in Europe 00:08:35.22\00:08:37.76 in Christian leader was a president of 00:08:37.77\00:08:39.86 the European conference of Christian churches 00:08:39.87\00:08:43.17 and he wrote a book, no a book was written about him. 00:08:43.18\00:08:48.29 It was interview and he said, in the book, he said, 00:08:48.30\00:08:51.82 you know I admire the Adventist church because 00:08:51.83\00:08:55.34 they are defending religious freedom for all. 00:08:55.35\00:08:58.40 Saying that writing that in Europe, you don't know 00:08:58.41\00:09:02.81 European contacts were, if you're small church 00:09:02.82\00:09:07.54 you're very often assimilated or confused 00:09:07.55\00:09:11.37 with cult and sect, that's a fabulous. 00:09:11.38\00:09:14.10 Well, we need to be recognized as defenders not because 00:09:14.11\00:09:18.04 we're Adventist but because we believe in the Bible, 00:09:18.05\00:09:20.23 it's just thoroughly biblical. 00:09:20.24\00:09:21.97 Yeah, yeah exactly when people ask us why are you 00:09:21.98\00:09:25.21 defending religious freedom. 00:09:25.22\00:09:26.59 You know I take the Bible and I said, 00:09:26.60\00:09:28.83 yes of course, you have humanistic 00:09:28.84\00:09:31.45 tradition but we're defending religious freedom 00:09:31.46\00:09:34.41 for all not because there is humanistic tradition 00:09:34.42\00:09:38.45 but because it's a gift from God. 00:09:38.46\00:09:40.78 It's a gift from God from the beginning 00:09:40.79\00:09:43.64 and you open the book of the Bible 00:09:43.65\00:09:45.87 the first pages of the Bible and you have the freedom 00:09:45.88\00:09:49.09 of choice as a gift of God. 00:09:49.10\00:09:51.13 And we believe that this gift is not just for us 00:09:51.14\00:09:53.84 that it's a gift for everyone. 00:09:53.85\00:09:56.21 And one thing that, two things that impress me 00:09:56.22\00:09:58.30 with this conference as it began 00:09:58.31\00:10:00.65 you had Denton Lotz, 00:10:00.66\00:10:02.55 he is the president of the IRLA. 00:10:02.56\00:10:04.75 Right? Yeah. 00:10:04.76\00:10:06.10 He gave a presentation and then ambassador Cipal. 00:10:06.11\00:10:09.94 The first U.S. ambassador for religious freedom, 00:10:09.95\00:10:13.21 now there's been two after him. 00:10:13.22\00:10:15.23 In their presentation they both emphasized 00:10:15.24\00:10:18.19 what you and I've just been talking about 00:10:18.20\00:10:19.56 the spiritual religious motivation that lies behind 00:10:19.57\00:10:23.33 the religious liberty initiative and I thought 00:10:23.34\00:10:25.13 that was very appropriate for the conference. 00:10:25.14\00:10:28.29 Yeah, because you know, very often we think that 00:10:28.30\00:10:31.62 human right has nothing to do with religion 00:10:31.63\00:10:34.45 and we portray the religious organization are against 00:10:34.46\00:10:38.20 human rights but we have to show that, 00:10:38.21\00:10:40.53 that's not true and we have a long tradition and for us, 00:10:40.54\00:10:44.86 I often say that you know, religious freedom is a gift 00:10:44.87\00:10:48.14 from God but also it's a prophetic mission 00:10:48.15\00:10:50.96 from the Advent for the Adventist church. 00:10:50.97\00:10:53.23 We receive the banner of religious freedom, 00:10:53.24\00:10:56.14 you know Ellen White say, 00:10:56.15\00:10:57.75 From the pioneers, from the reformers. 00:10:57.76\00:11:00.59 From the reformers and from-- she said that 00:11:00.60\00:11:02.74 the pioneer of the gospel church, 00:11:02.75\00:11:05.36 you know, the banner, and on the banner you have 00:11:05.37\00:11:08.71 the truths but not only the truths, 00:11:08.72\00:11:11.54 the truths and religiously liberty. 00:11:11.55\00:11:14.26 And there is no other, I think there is no other, 00:11:14.27\00:11:17.55 church or religious organization 00:11:17.56\00:11:19.48 who can which have such commitment for religion. 00:11:19.49\00:11:24.63 We may forget time to time 00:11:24.64\00:11:26.36 but really the commitment, the tradition. 00:11:26.37\00:11:28.42 And it's the interrelated. 00:11:28.43\00:11:29.55 Tied up with there, prophetic view point but 00:11:29.56\00:11:31.78 The origins of the church, the experience that are... 00:11:31.79\00:11:34.86 And we'll do that until the end. Until the end. 00:11:34.87\00:11:37.52 Yes it's important for us to have meeting 00:11:37.53\00:11:40.52 like a congress of religious freedom. 00:11:40.53\00:11:42.80 And we have that every five years 00:11:42.81\00:11:45.38 and we have to continue and this is why we plan 00:11:45.39\00:11:47.69 already and know the congress for 2015, 00:11:47.70\00:11:52.07 no, no, exactly 2017. 00:11:52.08\00:11:54.64 And I just would like you to think about us 00:11:54.65\00:11:57.54 and to pray for these big events. 00:11:57.55\00:12:02.21 There's something that I want to share with anyone 00:12:02.22\00:12:04.33 that's ever traveled or wanted to travel. 00:12:04.34\00:12:07.30 The beach at Punta Cana, 00:12:07.31\00:12:08.80 Dominican Republic is exemplary. 00:12:08.81\00:12:11.86 The water is so crystal clear and inviting, 00:12:11.87\00:12:14.63 it would take a stronger will in yours or mine 00:12:14.64\00:12:17.65 to stay away from it, but let me also share 00:12:17.66\00:12:20.33 with you the fact that the biggest yet ever 00:12:20.34\00:12:24.01 Religious Liberty Congress run by 00:12:24.02\00:12:26.52 the International Religious Liberty Association 00:12:26.53\00:12:28.90 held at Punta Cana was almost exclusively 00:12:28.91\00:12:32.56 conducted indoors and I never saw any of our 00:12:32.57\00:12:35.83 attendees swimming in that beach. 00:12:35.84\00:12:38.97 I'm sure many of them wish too but all of them 00:12:38.98\00:12:42.41 were compelled to come and join in those meetings, 00:12:42.42\00:12:45.85 to participate in other discussion and to find skills 00:12:45.86\00:12:49.88 that they could use to go back to their 00:12:49.89\00:12:51.42 different countries and to spread the word 00:12:51.43\00:12:53.85 that religious liberty is God's way. 00:12:53.86\00:12:56.65 Religious liberty is the way of human progress, 00:12:56.66\00:13:00.60 that religious liberty is the way to protect 00:13:00.61\00:13:02.76 the dignity of human kind. 00:13:02.77\00:13:05.47 It was a privilege to participate in such an event. 00:13:05.48\00:13:08.59 It wasn't immaterial that the beach was wonderful 00:13:08.60\00:13:11.13 and adverting but it was central that 00:13:11.14\00:13:13.77 the principles of religious freedom 00:13:13.78\00:13:15.52 were inspiring and encouraging to all. 00:13:15.53\00:13:19.93 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:13:19.94\00:13:22.55
