Welcome to The Liberty Insider. 00:00:23.03\00:00:24.76 This is the program that brings you up-to-date news, 00:00:24.77\00:00:27.21 views, discussion and opinions on religious liberty. 00:00:27.22\00:00:31.06 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine 00:00:31.07\00:00:34.43 and my guest on the program is Dr. John Graz. 00:00:34.44\00:00:38.41 Well, Director for Religious Liberty 00:00:38.42\00:00:40.00 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:00:40.01\00:00:41.76 Welcome John. Thank you for inviting me-- 00:00:41.77\00:00:44.22 And this is not the first time and I hope not the last. 00:00:44.23\00:00:46.73 No it's always a pleasure to be here. 00:00:46.74\00:00:50.14 There is a lot of things that we can talk about. 00:00:50.15\00:00:51.81 I know--even though our offices are not far apart 00:00:51.82\00:00:54.89 you're hardly ever there traveling the world 00:00:54.90\00:00:56.70 and there so many things going on. 00:00:56.71\00:00:58.82 But there was one recent event that 00:00:58.83\00:01:00.41 I want spend some time discussing with you. 00:01:00.42\00:01:03.00 I was there and it was your event. 00:01:03.01\00:01:06.04 And--and I characterized by the working title 00:01:06.05\00:01:08.39 of this program on the beach. 00:01:08.40\00:01:11.31 Yeah. 00:01:11.32\00:01:12.97 That--that was the Seventh World Congress. 00:01:12.98\00:01:15.52 And it was not holiday or vacation 00:01:15.53\00:01:17.21 for me and for our team too. 00:01:17.22\00:01:19.21 But a nice a place to be working? 00:01:19.22\00:01:20.70 Oh, yeah fabulous place. 00:01:20.71\00:01:21.73 Tell--tell us little bit about it. 00:01:21.74\00:01:23.11 About the place or about the event. 00:01:23.12\00:01:24.71 Place. You know the place was the, 00:01:24.72\00:01:27.45 resort, beach resort and the fabulous place 00:01:27.46\00:01:31.34 to spend some-- some days 00:01:31.35\00:01:33.40 but really that was not--gave us, 00:01:33.41\00:01:36.67 did not give us a time to stay on the beach, 00:01:36.68\00:01:39.87 because we have to lot of things to do. 00:01:39.88\00:01:41.82 And that was the Seventh World Congress 00:01:41.83\00:01:44.74 of the International Religious Liberty Association. 00:01:44.75\00:01:48.83 The seventh it mean you know we have already a story. 00:01:48.84\00:01:52.28 And seven is a perfect number. 00:01:52.29\00:01:53.66 Seven is a perfect number and I wanted really to have 00:01:53.67\00:01:57.08 really a big congress, something different 00:01:57.09\00:02:00.26 and I think that we reach our goal and thanks the Lord, 00:02:00.27\00:02:04.41 you know, that was probably the largest event about 00:02:04.42\00:02:09.33 religious freedom in term of congress. 00:02:09.34\00:02:12.17 It means you know people who are invited 00:02:12.18\00:02:14.26 our expert of religious freedom, 00:02:14.27\00:02:16.06 about religious freedom, religious leaders 00:02:16.07\00:02:19.33 people involved in NGOs, 00:02:19.34\00:02:21.82 it means non-governmental association 00:02:21.83\00:02:25.08 defending religious freedom. 00:02:25.09\00:02:26.50 It was really a world event not just for those 00:02:26.51\00:02:29.90 who are close to the association 00:02:29.91\00:02:32.48 but for all people interested about religious freedom. 00:02:32.49\00:02:36.17 How many people attended? 00:02:36.18\00:02:37.51 About you know, we were very close 00:02:37.52\00:02:39.11 to nine hundred and I think we may-- 00:02:39.12\00:02:41.07 we may have been more because you know 00:02:41.08\00:02:42.99 I am not sure that all people where registered. 00:02:43.00\00:02:45.60 Well, I wrote this up for Liberty Magazine 00:02:45.61\00:02:47.96 and I remarked on something, I thought it was good hook 00:02:47.97\00:02:51.58 for the article but I didn't just make it up. 00:02:51.59\00:02:54.28 I've been to other conferences and there is standard pattern 00:02:54.29\00:02:58.01 whether it's a medical conference 00:02:58.02\00:03:01.00 or something for metal workers or whatever, 00:03:01.01\00:03:03.73 you see them as you traveled the world, 00:03:03.74\00:03:05.53 lot of big hotels-- big conference. 00:03:05.54\00:03:08.18 But invariably they have the first assembly, 00:03:08.19\00:03:10.90 a few presentations. Yeah right. 00:03:10.91\00:03:12.53 And then from there on there's hardly anyone 00:03:12.54\00:03:14.64 there they are all out by the pool or on the beach. 00:03:14.65\00:03:16.91 Exactly. And that didn't happen here. 00:03:16.92\00:03:18.48 No, no, and I thought the same thing you know, 00:03:18.49\00:03:20.93 because you know when I build the program, 00:03:20.94\00:03:22.73 I thought that may be let see may be 00:03:22.74\00:03:26.25 we should not have meeting in the evening. 00:03:26.26\00:03:28.87 And after you know I thought that people, 00:03:28.88\00:03:31.92 some people are really here because they want to speak 00:03:31.93\00:03:34.60 about religious freedom and they are some topics 00:03:34.61\00:03:37.40 like the state of religious freedom in the world. 00:03:37.41\00:03:41.14 We need to have a kind of workshop about. 00:03:41.15\00:03:44.45 And we decided to put in the evening, 00:03:44.46\00:03:47.51 it means several workshops and of course I thought 00:03:47.52\00:03:51.12 that you know 20 people, 25 people but it was full. 00:03:51.13\00:03:55.34 It was full and we have a problem because we did not 00:03:55.35\00:03:57.46 plan to have a translation from English into Spanish. 00:03:57.47\00:04:01.24 And we had to improvise that because people were there 00:04:01.25\00:04:03.98 and they were very interested. 00:04:03.99\00:04:05.59 And as you remember, you know, 00:04:05.60\00:04:07.30 when we start the program in the afternoon at two, 00:04:07.31\00:04:10.44 two beautiful whether, beaches and resorts. 00:04:10.45\00:04:13.32 We thought that nobody will be here, 00:04:13.33\00:04:15.30 but you know what 2:15 the room was almost full. 00:04:15.31\00:04:18.21 That's all right. I think that's, 00:04:18.22\00:04:19.84 I mean that's some testimony to how well 00:04:19.85\00:04:22.46 this organization, this event was run. 00:04:22.47\00:04:24.89 But I in a larger sense, I think religious liberty 00:04:24.90\00:04:28.16 as catching the attention of professionals 00:04:28.17\00:04:30.76 and there were many government leaders there. 00:04:30.77\00:04:33.53 People want to know because this is a hot topic now. 00:04:33.54\00:04:36.49 Yeah that's, as you said, that's a hot topic and, 00:04:36.50\00:04:39.21 you know, we had a privilege to know so many people 00:04:39.22\00:04:41.82 we invite 50 religious leaders but you know, 00:04:41.83\00:04:46.30 university professors from the best universities. 00:04:46.31\00:04:50.03 It--it means that, that was really an event 00:04:50.04\00:04:52.40 where the best expert on religious freedom 00:04:52.41\00:04:57.67 and some famous religious leaders like the sacred age 00:04:57.68\00:05:01.58 of all of the Baptist World Alliance, 00:05:01.59\00:05:03.76 sacred age in all of the Christian global forum 00:05:03.77\00:05:06.68 and our president Dr. Ted Winson was with, 00:05:06.69\00:05:09.42 they were all together. 00:05:09.43\00:05:10.80 Absolutely. No this is a very high profile event. 00:05:10.81\00:05:14.45 We need to talk at some length about many 00:05:14.46\00:05:16.28 of the presentations but one that got my interest 00:05:16.29\00:05:18.25 though was government representative from Cuba. 00:05:18.26\00:05:20.75 Yeah. In the United States, 00:05:20.76\00:05:21.94 you don't often hear directly from Cuba but-- 00:05:21.95\00:05:25.44 You- you know, he want also when we had 00:05:25.45\00:05:27.10 the first congress I organize, was in Rio, it was in 1997. 00:05:27.11\00:05:33.44 And they send also the deputy director 00:05:33.45\00:05:36.06 of religious affairs from Cuba. 00:05:36.07\00:05:37.85 And it means we know more or less 00:05:37.86\00:05:39.42 what kind of speech they will give 00:05:39.43\00:05:41.24 and we we're not disappointed this time too. Yeah. 00:05:41.25\00:05:44.93 Well, I maybe I should comment on it, you know 00:05:44.94\00:05:47.93 it's a free forum, you don't-- 00:05:47.94\00:05:49.11 you can't tell people what they? 00:05:49.12\00:05:51.45 They should say and I was interested in the woman for the, 00:05:51.46\00:05:55.05 representing the Cuban government. 00:05:55.06\00:05:56.90 She gave very optimistic presentation, 00:05:56.91\00:06:00.18 in my view it was what they would like it to be 00:06:00.19\00:06:03.78 or at least like us to think its, it is. 00:06:03.79\00:06:06.91 But to me the value was that they've been called 00:06:06.92\00:06:09.98 to high expectations and just in front of people 00:06:09.99\00:06:13.63 that are standing for a religious liberty 00:06:13.64\00:06:15.31 and for them to sort of put 00:06:15.32\00:06:16.37 a good construct on their situation. 00:06:16.38\00:06:18.58 I think it's very likely to actually 00:06:18.59\00:06:20.38 improve religious liberty in Cuba. 00:06:20.39\00:06:22.07 Exactly and first, you know, we have to remember that 00:06:22.08\00:06:24.70 when you represent a government, 00:06:24.71\00:06:26.76 you cannot say everything. You have too... 00:06:26.77\00:06:28.52 No, its not a critique, its an observation. 00:06:28.53\00:06:29.53 You have just to explain the policy of the government 00:06:29.54\00:06:32.56 that was also true for the other officials we had invited, 00:06:32.57\00:06:37.16 except the one from Honduras, but he had been just dismissed. 00:06:37.17\00:06:41.33 Because, you know, that's a fabulous story. 00:06:41.34\00:06:43.52 I was there in Honduras a few-- few days before the congress. 00:06:43.53\00:06:48.04 And in Honduras they had a big discussion about a new law 00:06:48.05\00:06:53.18 and the new law should or planned to recognize 00:06:53.19\00:06:57.95 not just the Catholic Church but an evangelical association. 00:06:57.96\00:07:03.59 And the deal was, you know, all those who are not catholic 00:07:03.60\00:07:07.13 has to be member of this evangelical association. 00:07:07.14\00:07:10.70 And they will be recognize 00:07:10.71\00:07:12.34 at the same level of the catholic church. 00:07:12.35\00:07:14.46 Of course, many evangelicals including the Adventist 00:07:14.47\00:07:17.70 and some other said no, we don't want to be member 00:07:17.71\00:07:22.14 of this association, why we should? 00:07:22.15\00:07:24.80 And they had a big discussion 00:07:24.81\00:07:26.63 and the minister of religious affairs, you know, 00:07:26.64\00:07:30.40 disagree with the president publicly. 00:07:30.41\00:07:33.14 And of course, you know, when I visited there 00:07:33.15\00:07:34.93 he was waiting the telephone call from the president 00:07:34.94\00:07:37.68 and saying I'm sorry but, you know, 00:07:37.69\00:07:40.18 you know disagree with my policy, we cannot keep you. 00:07:40.19\00:07:43.56 And he was--he was had to leave the government 00:07:43.57\00:07:46.53 with his deputy director and he came to the congress 00:07:46.54\00:07:49.72 and he explain what happened in Honduras. 00:07:49.73\00:07:52.63 And actually that sort of dynamic is being played out 00:07:52.64\00:07:55.78 also in Latin America because the countries are moving away 00:07:55.79\00:07:59.14 from once was the truly confession step, 00:07:59.15\00:08:01.33 where Roman Catholicism was not just favored 00:08:01.34\00:08:04.91 by the state it was sort of. 00:08:04.92\00:08:06.08 Then was a state religion. Yeah. 00:08:06.09\00:08:07.94 And I mean in many countries you know in Latin America, 00:08:07.95\00:08:10.94 still you have still some countries like that. 00:08:10.95\00:08:13.39 You could not be the president of the country, 00:08:13.40\00:08:15.66 if you are not a catholic, 00:08:15.67\00:08:17.24 like in Argentina a few years ago. 00:08:17.25\00:08:19.93 You had to be a catholic but now you know with the growth 00:08:19.94\00:08:23.67 of the evangelicals and present or pluralism. 00:08:23.68\00:08:28.13 It tends, they tend to change the law 00:08:28.14\00:08:29.99 and there is a strong movement to have more religious freedom 00:08:30.00\00:08:33.77 at least at these level. 00:08:33.78\00:08:35.59 They have religious freedom we cannot say that 00:08:35.60\00:08:37.54 you don't have religious freedom in Latin America, 00:08:37.55\00:08:40.86 but you know they would like also to have 00:08:40.87\00:08:43.17 these religious freedom in the law. 00:08:43.18\00:08:46.28 Not just in practical. 00:08:46.29\00:08:47.29 Well, I think they moving in the right direction 00:08:47.30\00:08:48.94 because they trying to disentangle themselves 00:08:48.95\00:08:50.99 from the pressure relationship but at the same time 00:08:51.00\00:08:53.72 they can't instantly go to a situation, 00:08:53.73\00:08:56.46 it's very difficult to go instantly to way 00:08:56.47\00:08:58.76 all religion including this old, not old but the catholic church 00:08:58.77\00:09:03.84 that they had this old relationship with they can't 00:09:03.85\00:09:05.90 suddenly put it just one among many. 00:09:05.91\00:09:08.08 One of the problem is you know for us 00:09:08.09\00:09:10.50 we are in favor of separation of church and State. 00:09:10.51\00:09:14.03 In some countries where are you had, 00:09:14.04\00:09:16.18 you know one religion, or one church as recognize 00:09:16.19\00:09:19.91 as a state church or state religion. 00:09:19.92\00:09:23.21 It's difficult and what they are doing, 00:09:23.22\00:09:25.62 they try to give the same privilege to the others. 00:09:25.63\00:09:28.98 But we know that-- that's not the best way 00:09:28.99\00:09:31.61 but anyway it may be a first step. 00:09:31.62\00:09:33.96 That's what I was trying to say. 00:09:33.97\00:09:35.02 I mean it's not theoretically ideal, 00:09:35.03\00:09:36.97 but we have to recognize most of Latin America, 00:09:36.98\00:09:40.14 they are moving in the right direction. 00:09:40.15\00:09:42.02 And their intentions that to create 00:09:42.03\00:09:44.38 greater and greater freedom for or, 00:09:44.39\00:09:46.35 an equality of religious freedom. 00:09:46.36\00:09:48.26 And coming back to Cuba, you know if we compare Cuba 00:09:48.27\00:09:51.84 with some other really communist countries like North Korea, 00:09:51.85\00:09:56.44 and even Vietnam you know even China, 00:09:56.45\00:09:59.93 Cuba has a better, better 00:09:59.94\00:10:02.35 situation for religious minorities. 00:10:02.36\00:10:04.37 They, its--its not really perfect but-- 00:10:04.38\00:10:08.46 but you know that's still, still we can visit Cuba. 00:10:08.47\00:10:12.95 We can have meeting in Cuba. 00:10:12.96\00:10:14.89 There also, you know, 00:10:14.90\00:10:16.40 we have also evangelistic campaign in Cuba. 00:10:16.41\00:10:19.01 Of course, you have to be careful 00:10:19.02\00:10:20.80 not criticize the government but you know 00:10:20.81\00:10:23.03 it happened in several other countries. 00:10:23.04\00:10:25.16 Well, it was a great opening there 00:10:25.17\00:10:26.26 and I often wondered this is purely my opinion, 00:10:26.27\00:10:29.43 but I've noticed that the, the increased religious liberty 00:10:29.44\00:10:33.90 in Cuba corresponds to Fidel Castro's illness 00:10:33.91\00:10:39.12 and remember he was early on in Israel 00:10:39.13\00:10:40.97 just when the first came. 00:10:40.98\00:10:42.87 Yeah, right. 00:10:42.88\00:10:43.97 And he started to be a more 00:10:43.98\00:10:45.29 open and open to religion and so. 00:10:45.30\00:10:47.52 I don't know, I think that 00:10:47.53\00:10:48.77 there is practical aspect and you know when we, 00:10:48.78\00:10:52.08 I visit Cuba 15 years ago. 00:10:52.09\00:10:54.14 I talk with several official and I remember having talk 00:10:54.15\00:10:58.42 with the Baptist pastor I need explain that 00:10:58.43\00:11:02.57 he was invited with all the religious leaders 00:11:02.58\00:11:05.18 by Fidel Castro and he explained that, 00:11:05.19\00:11:07.46 you know, the state and the different 00:11:07.47\00:11:09.87 religious group should have good relations and they try 00:11:09.88\00:11:13.13 to treat religious people in a various, in a different way. 00:11:13.14\00:11:17.26 You know we they are many things we can say 00:11:17.27\00:11:19.48 but we have also to see the positive aspect. 00:11:19.49\00:11:22.71 No, no. If I take... 00:11:22.72\00:11:24.34 Should even indulge that, but--but on--on one level 00:11:24.35\00:11:29.57 we need to be quite clear that in Cuba there was 00:11:29.58\00:11:32.65 incredible persecution of many Christians and Adventists. 00:11:32.66\00:11:37.32 I know some people that were imprisoned, that was real. 00:11:37.33\00:11:41.20 But we have to face just the historical change in Cuba 00:11:41.21\00:11:45.43 while it is not a perfect system but they have 00:11:45.44\00:11:48.17 radically improved and that there is a new openness 00:11:48.18\00:11:51.13 that--that compared to what it once was. 00:11:51.14\00:11:52.95 Yeah. It's amazing. 00:11:52.96\00:11:53.99 And we can pray that, 00:11:54.00\00:11:55.12 that it-it continues on like that. 00:11:55.13\00:11:56.63 You know we had also program in Columbia. 00:11:56.64\00:11:58.52 We have program in several country which was, 00:11:58.53\00:12:00.96 which is absolutely fabulous is you know, 00:12:00.97\00:12:04.80 40 years ago in Latin America, you do not have 00:12:04.81\00:12:08.42 religious freedom in most of the countries 00:12:08.43\00:12:10.36 except may be the Brazil, but--but now, you know 00:12:10.37\00:12:13.37 they have more religious freedom on the American Continent 00:12:13.38\00:12:16.81 than everywhere else around the world. 00:12:16.82\00:12:19.77 Now--and, and within our own church, 00:12:19.78\00:12:21.63 Seventh-day Adventist Church the increase 00:12:21.64\00:12:24.09 in membership reflects the surplus, doesn't it. 00:12:24.10\00:12:26.54 I think things are changing all you know 00:12:26.55\00:12:28.75 at the number of the Evangelicals, 00:12:28.76\00:12:31.13 Pentecostal are growing Adventist are growing, 00:12:31.14\00:12:34.46 probably it's a positive factor to have a more freedom. 00:12:34.47\00:12:38.25 Very good. We will be back after the break 00:12:38.26\00:12:40.15 to further discuss this Seventh World Congress 00:12:40.16\00:12:43.43 of Religious Liberty that was held 00:12:43.44\00:12:44.74 In Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. 00:12:44.75\00:12:47.30
