Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:04.56\00:00:06.30 Before the break with guest Bruce Cameron, 00:00:06.31\00:00:09.28 we were talking about making the difference. 00:00:09.29\00:00:12.15 Of course, at you-- the school that you 00:00:12.16\00:00:15.30 teach at Regent University. 00:00:15.31\00:00:17.33 But let's take it a little broader. 00:00:17.34\00:00:18.99 And I had mentioned Liberty magazine 00:00:19.00\00:00:20.67 and how we send it out to lawyers and public officials. 00:00:20.68\00:00:24.83 That's one way by giving means to the magazines 00:00:24.84\00:00:27.91 someone can by vicariously 00:00:27.92\00:00:30.54 carry forward religious liberty. 00:00:30.55\00:00:31.96 What suggestions do you have though for someone 00:00:31.97\00:00:33.69 who wants to make a difference, 00:00:33.70\00:00:35.06 who is concerned to protect religious freedom 00:00:35.07\00:00:37.66 and promote the principles that lie behind it? 00:00:37.67\00:00:40.46 What suggestions would have for our viewers 00:00:40.47\00:00:42.68 to be able to do something 00:00:42.69\00:00:44.50 palpable to make the difference? 00:00:44.51\00:00:46.21 Well, I think the first thing you've to do is to, 00:00:46.22\00:00:49.21 yourself be converted, 00:00:49.22\00:00:51.96 i.e. no one believes in these things 00:00:51.97\00:00:57.31 as sort of abstract rules. 00:00:57.32\00:01:00.16 I mean you change the person's heart 00:01:00.17\00:01:02.18 from within not from outside. It's true. 00:01:02.19\00:01:05.67 And so if someone says I want to advance 00:01:05.68\00:01:07.98 the cause of religious liberty in the United States. 00:01:07.99\00:01:10.58 They have to affirm understanding the gospel. 00:01:10.59\00:01:13.38 They've to understand how the gospel should operate 00:01:13.39\00:01:15.69 in society and then at that point you can say, 00:01:15.70\00:01:18.90 all right, what's the specific need here. 00:01:18.91\00:01:22.10 Is there a freedom issue with regard to my local school? 00:01:22.11\00:01:25.96 Is there freedom issue in my local town? 00:01:25.97\00:01:28.32 Is there freedom issue at the state? 00:01:28.33\00:01:30.70 There are also two organizations 00:01:30.71\00:01:32.40 that are involved in freedom issues, 00:01:32.41\00:01:35.46 that is issues that in which freedom 00:01:35.47\00:01:38.59 advances the kingdom of God. 00:01:38.60\00:01:40.96 And I think the students can look for that. 00:01:40.97\00:01:43.61 Now if you're talking about it and I just mentioned 00:01:43.62\00:01:46.27 the word "students" there are all 00:01:46.28\00:01:48.10 sorts of organizations that offer internships 00:01:48.11\00:01:51.39 and they offer stipends for being involved 00:01:51.40\00:01:55.71 in certain things, for writing papers. 00:01:55.72\00:01:57.89 The bottom line is that with the internet 00:01:58.91\00:02:01.70 you've access to all this information 00:02:01.71\00:02:03.91 and if a young person says, I want to make a difference, 00:02:03.92\00:02:07.16 I want make a difference in the certain area, 00:02:07.17\00:02:09.20 then you've to look for the organizations 00:02:09.21\00:02:10.74 that are involved in that area that are advancing 00:02:10.75\00:02:13.76 the King of God through freedom of choice 00:02:13.77\00:02:16.54 through proper, you know, choices. 00:02:16.55\00:02:19.01 Talking about the internet, every now and again 00:02:19.02\00:02:21.57 I've reason to dilate liberty, 00:02:21.58\00:02:23.94 to liberty something. Right. 00:02:24.33\00:02:26.16 Because there is Liberty Magazine, 00:02:26.17\00:02:27.53 it's "the magazine" without against any thought. 00:02:27.54\00:02:29.74 But you dial-in liberty or religious freedom. 00:02:29.75\00:02:32.44 I did that recent. 00:02:32.45\00:02:33.63 I mean there are hundreds of thousands of entries 00:02:33.64\00:02:36.59 and many of those for organizations, 00:02:36.60\00:02:38.51 but discussion and angles on, it's endless. 00:02:38.52\00:02:42.66 And I'm sure that someone is motivated. 00:02:42.67\00:02:45.16 A little research like that they would get contexts 00:02:45.17\00:02:47.94 for organizations to cooperate with, 00:02:49.09\00:02:50.88 to support, write letters or respond 00:02:50.89\00:02:52.90 to what their initiatives they're bringing through. 00:02:52.91\00:02:55.94 The only criteria or the qualification 00:02:55.95\00:02:58.10 I need to bring in is some people's 00:02:58.11\00:03:00.72 view of religious liberty is not correct, 00:03:00.73\00:03:03.73 to say advance the kingdom. 00:03:05.17\00:03:07.54 You know, I can have the committed, 00:03:07.55\00:03:08.97 I guess it's not from the true conversion 00:03:09.99\00:03:12.10 or at least of understanding of God when you converted 00:03:12.11\00:03:15.98 but it's possible to be want, to want to just carve out 00:03:15.99\00:03:20.06 and entitlement for your particular viewpoint. 00:03:20.07\00:03:23.13 That's not truly at least in the construct 00:03:23.14\00:03:26.34 that we use to promote religious freedom. 00:03:26.35\00:03:27.86 That is not religious freedom. 00:03:27.87\00:03:29.28 That's a very protestant, 00:03:29.29\00:03:32.65 religiously protestant viewpoint. 00:03:32.66\00:03:34.45 But I do think someone that's understoodapparent. 00:03:35.49\00:03:37.89 what God's all about will want to grant 00:03:37.90\00:03:40.39 that same right to someone to believe something even 00:03:40.40\00:03:44.45 apparent. Right. 00:03:44.46\00:03:45.64 The right to believe that 00:03:45.65\00:03:47.06 and to carve out their entitlement, 00:03:47.07\00:03:49.47 so it's--as long as all people are free to pursue 00:03:49.48\00:03:52.41 their religious freedom agenda, 00:03:52.42\00:03:54.68 you've done a great service for the Lord. 00:03:54.69\00:03:57.02 And you would see that in the Bible 00:03:57.03\00:03:58.74 that God has allowed evil. 00:03:58.75\00:04:01.48 God has allowed humans to make choices. 00:04:01.49\00:04:03.71 God allowed us to make choices 00:04:03.72\00:04:05.45 that are very great damage to Himself. 00:04:05.46\00:04:09.10 And so, you know, I think the Christian should say, 00:04:09.11\00:04:12.78 how can I give glory to God? 00:04:12.79\00:04:14.52 You know, how can I advance the kingdom of God? 00:04:14.53\00:04:17.13 And by that I don't mean the protestant kingdom of God, 00:04:17.14\00:04:19.50 I mean how can you advance God's, God's word? 00:04:19.51\00:04:22.37 And freedom and liberty is important part of this. 00:04:22.38\00:04:26.05 Because after all if we don't have freedom 00:04:26.06\00:04:28.16 we can't choose to follow God. 00:04:28.17\00:04:30.52 And some of these non-free nations 00:04:30.53\00:04:32.82 where Christians are dying 00:04:32.83\00:04:35.07 because of their decision to follow, follow God. 00:04:35.08\00:04:38.19 To me a vertical criteria of freedom is whether 00:04:38.20\00:04:41.36 there is coercion involved. 00:04:41.37\00:04:42.40 If it's coercion it's suspect. 00:04:42.41\00:04:44.05 Well, see that's, that's why we've been 00:04:44.06\00:04:46.64 talking about the labor union conversion. 00:04:46.65\00:04:49.54 And it's a good point. 00:04:49.55\00:04:50.95 I think it's the most valid point on likely--It, it is. 00:04:50.96\00:04:55.17 I mean so forth example, a young person says 00:04:55.18\00:04:58.95 the Seventh-day Adventist church has this teaching 00:04:58.96\00:05:00.99 that says church member shouldn't be union members. 00:05:01.00\00:05:04.10 Well, there's a National Right to Work Committee, 00:05:04.11\00:05:06.71 which is lobbing in favor of right to work laws, 00:05:06.72\00:05:09.29 is allowing employees--No, I should be left with a choice. 00:05:09.30\00:05:11.36 We're talking about closing 00:05:11.37\00:05:12.36 the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:05:12.37\00:05:14.98 that I know of, never disfellowshipped 00:05:14.99\00:05:16.96 or disciplined anyone for being a member of a union. 00:05:16.97\00:05:19.68 Not to my knowledge. It's a recommendation. 00:05:19.69\00:05:22.01 It's based on our principles we want people 00:05:22.02\00:05:25.21 that is probably not messed. 00:05:25.22\00:05:26.50 But we're not directly opposed to unions 00:05:26.51\00:05:29.71 nor do we strong our members in how they're related to. 00:05:29.72\00:05:33.42 We advise. It's not test of membership. 00:05:33.43\00:05:36.34 No. Test of fellowship, as you've used the term right. 00:05:36.35\00:05:38.93 And there's a very few tested fellowship 00:05:38.94\00:05:40.94 at the Adventist Church and even those are not 00:05:40.95\00:05:43.97 vigorously applied because we're not in the business 00:05:43.98\00:05:47.14 to use a word that's larger in sense, 00:05:47.15\00:05:50.72 not as a critic of captures, but you know, 00:05:50.73\00:05:53.25 we don't have no acquisition. 00:05:53.26\00:05:54.54 The principle of the gospel is allowed to the individual 00:05:54.55\00:05:58.77 to make the choice and operate on their unconscious. 00:05:58.78\00:06:01.10 But a church that represents a common point 00:06:01.11\00:06:04.24 that they join the common points, 00:06:04.25\00:06:05.95 church has a very obligation to advise them 00:06:05.96\00:06:08.19 and to direct, but not compel within the church 00:06:08.20\00:06:12.14 and in the society shouldn't be compulsive. 00:06:12.15\00:06:14.38 Well, that's-- that is the mantra 00:06:14.39\00:06:17.83 of the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, 00:06:17.84\00:06:19.96 which is the organization I work for, 00:06:19.97\00:06:21.71 the committee does work on litigation and foundation 00:06:21.72\00:06:24.41 does work in the field of litigation 00:06:24.42\00:06:27.39 and law. And that's it. 00:06:27.40\00:06:29.19 They 're standard years that they're fighting 00:06:29.20\00:06:31.53 against abuse as a compulsory unionism. 00:06:31.54\00:06:34.68 The idea is employee should be free to make his choices. 00:06:34.69\00:06:37.85 Ah, let me just, we got a few minutes left 00:06:37.86\00:06:40.90 and I want to take you to another topic. 00:06:40.91\00:06:42.41 Okay. And I don't know. 00:06:42.42\00:06:44.58 I've never brought this up with you before. 00:06:44.59\00:06:46.36 But Unionism, there are certain problems 00:06:46.37\00:06:50.83 in relation to freedom of councils. 00:06:50.84\00:06:53.52 You had mentioned that the teachers union 00:06:53.53\00:06:57.36 is problematic sometimes-- Yeah, largest union. 00:06:57.37\00:06:59.83 Many people have faith that shows them 00:07:01.67\00:07:03.95 to educate the children at home and schooling. 00:07:03.96\00:07:07.84 Now that's more and more becoming a matter 00:07:07.85\00:07:10.74 of contention, not so much in the US, but little. 00:07:10.75\00:07:13.46 But in other countries this case is, 00:07:13.47\00:07:17.06 it may be NATO, I think was Norway. No Sweden. 00:07:17.07\00:07:21.11 In Sweden, the state is acting quite 00:07:21.12\00:07:25.70 harshly against those usually of the Christian faith 00:07:25.71\00:07:28.62 and want to try the children at home, what do you think? 00:07:28.63\00:07:32.79 I home school, I say, "I home school" our children. 00:07:32.80\00:07:36.59 Our children are home school, my wife home school then. 00:07:36.60\00:07:40.08 What a blessing it was to that. 00:07:40.09\00:07:43.29 I'll tell you my son learned skills on his spare time, 00:07:43.30\00:07:49.49 home schooling that have taken him 00:07:49.50\00:07:51.69 through medical school. 00:07:51.70\00:07:53.93 I mean he taught himself to be a computer expert 00:07:53.94\00:07:56.79 and so home schooling is just a glorious thing, 00:07:56.80\00:07:59.71 of course, my wife is a highly skilled teacher 00:07:59.72\00:08:03.13 and so it was a tremendous blessing to my son, 00:08:03.14\00:08:05.41 tremendous blessing to my daughter, 00:08:05.42\00:08:07.74 and why is it that the teachers unions 00:08:07.75\00:08:09.90 are against home school? 00:08:09.91\00:08:11.16 It's because they're not getting dues 00:08:11.17\00:08:13.36 from the mothers and fathers. It's that simple. 00:08:13.37\00:08:17.26 It's a matter of control and it's a matter of money. 00:08:17.27\00:08:20.34 So I hope those unions don't move upon state authorities 00:08:20.35\00:08:24.09 to cast home schooling under a legal shadow, 00:08:24.10\00:08:28.22 which to say has happened under some other countries. 00:08:28.23\00:08:30.90 I first got into sitting this because in the Soviet Union 00:08:30.91\00:08:35.08 where there was, there were severe problems 00:08:35.09\00:08:38.78 with the people of faith and the education 00:08:38.79\00:08:41.88 that state education and often I mean going to church 00:08:41.89\00:08:45.75 instead of school on Sabbath. 00:08:45.76\00:08:47.80 And so they ended up trying to teach 00:08:47.81\00:08:49.63 their kids in the home and they were relaxed 00:08:49.64\00:08:52.79 with the government who would take the children away. 00:08:52.80\00:08:56.84 And they'll take the children away 00:08:56.85\00:08:58.43 even in western countries like United States, 00:08:58.44\00:09:00.39 if it is seen that your well view is a little elaborate. 00:09:00.40\00:09:05.85 Well, we talk about young people 00:09:05.86\00:09:08.49 who wanted to choose an area of religious liberty. 00:09:08.50\00:09:11.67 If these were the issue for the young person, 00:09:11.68\00:09:15.07 there is an organization called 00:09:15.08\00:09:16.45 the Homeschool Legal Defense Fund that litigates 00:09:16.46\00:09:20.11 on behalf of parents who want to have the freedom 00:09:20.12\00:09:23.83 to home school their children. 00:09:23.84\00:09:25.39 It's good, thank you for that information. 00:09:25.40\00:09:26.44 Right, right, well you know, 00:09:26.45\00:09:27.58 almost any of these areas, Lincoln, that we've discussed, 00:09:27.59\00:09:30.25 the young person says, "you know, 00:09:30.26\00:09:32.50 I want to do something for God. 00:09:32.51\00:09:34.26 This is the area in which I want to make a difference. 00:09:34.27\00:09:36.51 For example religion has a big thing 00:09:36.52\00:09:38.07 on human trafficking, very great interest in that-- 00:09:38.08\00:09:41.53 We should have some discussions, 00:09:41.54\00:09:42.62 but we ran out of time. 00:09:42.63\00:09:43.84 But that's a very valid topic 00:09:43.85\00:09:46.93 and very contemporary concern I think. 00:09:46.94\00:09:49.49 There are organizations that address that, 00:09:49.50\00:09:51.86 in fact you can work on that if you're at the law school, 00:09:51.87\00:09:55.02 work on that problem. 00:09:55.03\00:09:56.76 So the young person just needs to find the organization 00:09:56.77\00:09:59.78 that is involved in that activity 00:09:59.79\00:10:01.85 and say what can I do to help you? 00:10:01.86\00:10:04.10 Absolutely. Very good. 00:10:04.11\00:10:06.09 I appreciate your upbeat manner 00:10:06.10\00:10:07.09 like see the seconds ticking down, 00:10:07.81\00:10:09.78 but it's been a pleasure and privilege 00:10:09.79\00:10:13.63 to interview on this program 00:10:13.64\00:10:15.33 and little clue to our viewers. 00:10:15.34\00:10:19.41 You and I drove down together for this filming 00:10:19.42\00:10:21.97 and we ask of the voting. Yes. 00:10:21.98\00:10:24.54 It's amazing that we can hear it. 00:10:24.55\00:10:27.09 We need to tell your viewers, Lincoln, 00:10:27.10\00:10:29.57 what a tough guy you are because you made me 00:10:29.58\00:10:32.15 go without sleep and without food. 00:10:32.16\00:10:34.30 And say, come on Bruce, 00:10:34.31\00:10:36.18 let's share with our audience. 00:10:36.19\00:10:38.16 I peddle an amount sometimes. 00:10:38.17\00:10:40.14 But thank you and-- what do you have 00:10:40.15\00:10:43.31 as just a parting word to our viewers? 00:10:43.32\00:10:45.60 Well, I tell you what. 00:10:45.61\00:10:47.14 One of the great opportunities is for 00:10:47.15\00:10:49.43 a young person says what can I do to advance 00:10:49.44\00:10:52.40 the kingdom of God and I encourage them by to say, 00:10:52.41\00:10:56.17 you know, "dear God, lead me on that, 00:10:57.17\00:11:00.29 guide me and help me to know 00:11:00.30\00:11:01.56 what I can do to advance your kingdom." 00:11:01.57\00:11:03.27 I remember hearing a story years ago, 00:11:06.70\00:11:09.65 I'm sure a preferable about someone 00:11:09.66\00:11:12.15 who would had a wonderful conversion experience 00:11:12.16\00:11:15.32 and then became quite in demand 00:11:15.33\00:11:18.16 going around the different churches 00:11:18.17\00:11:20.14 explaining about the Christian experience. 00:11:20.15\00:11:23.76 After quite sometime and after many presentations 00:11:23.77\00:11:28.08 they were due to give up in one of the meetings 00:11:28.09\00:11:31.35 and cast about for the piece of paper that 00:11:31.36\00:11:33.50 they had written on and couldn't find it. 00:11:33.51\00:11:36.67 And then this individual was in absolute disarray, 00:11:36.68\00:11:40.35 and went around proclaiming 00:11:40.36\00:11:41.74 I've lost my Christian experience. 00:11:41.75\00:11:43.53 I think it's very important 00:11:45.60\00:11:47.32 in defending religious liberty to do the right things, 00:11:47.33\00:11:50.10 at times legally challenge something important 00:11:51.14\00:11:54.24 and in the public opinion, but it's the vital 00:11:54.25\00:11:56.82 all ways to have that Christian experience 00:11:56.83\00:11:59.81 or else wonderful things down for religious liberty 00:11:59.82\00:12:03.19 will accomplish nothing. 00:12:03.20\00:12:04.92 Guest, Bruce Cameron, pointed that out 00:12:04.93\00:12:06.85 that we should be training a car dry of young people 00:12:06.86\00:12:10.74 to reach out and to speak out for religious freedom 00:12:10.75\00:12:15.09 for this most precious religious liberty. 00:12:15.10\00:12:18.06 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:19.11\00:12:21.99
